Wow. What a cool place for the kids. There's a lot of stuff to do, from an obstacle course, laser tag, arcades, tree climb, to eating a fun meal. Plus there are prizes to be won from the arcades. The kids had a great time. And the moms had a very good time too because they serve beer. We played a few games of laser tag and I have to admit it was very fun to play with my sons. Very good father son bonding moment. I deafly and highly recommend this place for an afternoon out to let the kiddos have a great time and spend some quality time with them

This place reminds me of another establishment run by Charles E. Fromage; just with some better entertainment for your older children. Went there for a birthday party for one of my son's friends. All of these kids are pretty young so they had a great time playing laser tag. This is where the positive part of the review will stop. It's all true, everything you read in the negative reviews, even as far as five years back. There is no machine to make change, or to refill your credits. Some games require credits from your play card, and some games require actual change. Everything must be done through the front desk, which is habitually understaffed. The bathrooms were very unkempt, and really needed to be cleaned. Make sure you check out the place before you book any parties here. Not sure about the value for your money, but I know this place could do better. Fingers crossed

Unfortunately, this will be my last visit and review of this place. Used to be neat. Now, it's poorly kept, with numerous, constantly broken and down games. The staff is nice and helpful to a degree- it's really not the staff that's an issue it's the environment. There level of care put into this business nowadays will be met with my level of desire to return, which is not much. Same for it's counterpart next door. It's just hard to have fun in this location anymore. The broken games and mixture of coin, cash, and card games makes it harder. Even the ATM and card machine were down. Lazer tag is the best thing still going for it, but it's just lost it's ability to entertain past 10 minutes anymore. I won't be giving any more money on this Safari. Better places out there to spend at for fun.

Best place for family fun events parties and fundraisers and much more great price for all the laser tag and arcade and party specials

What a hidden gem! A couple nights ago we came to play arcade games and laser tag. Turns out they were closing early for holiday hours and we were there about 5 min before closing time. Staff NOT ONLY stayed late and kept it open an extra 10-15 min that night so we could play a few arcade games , BUT ALSO gave us free laser tag tickets to come back another day since we couldn't play/buy tickets that night. We came back today and had a GREAT time! Small but everything you need to have a great time at a reasonable price. Even more than that, every single staff member gave off the vibe that they wanted to make sure the kids have as much fun as possible. We'll totally be back next time we're in town!

Photo of Titus B.

Great place for the whole family! Laser tag is an absolute blast, it's like air soft but without getting hurt and arguably much cooler! The staff was super helpful and nice and the prices are great!

On our way to new Orleans I was searching for something for the car of sleeping adults to do and I came across this place which was only about 15 mins out of our way! I started calling 10 minutes after they opened I never got anyone to answer the phone so I kept trying an hour later when our exit was 10 miles away. I finally got someone on the phone, we were informed we got 5 mins for $6.50 and two people were allowed in the super small pool at a time. We were tired of riding and wanted a break so we decided to stop. The first couple got in and it was hilarious! They had so much fun and fell around making it funnier and funnier! After 5 minutes it was my boyfriend and I turn, we got in and it was awesome for like one minute then I noticed a scotch taped hole was leaking. A very slow leak but still leaking. It was still fun rolling around! My boyfriend loved it, the last couple got in after us, the girl got in without a hitch, she just kind of rolled around too but then her husband got his and the air was leaking, air was leaving so fast he started to sink, it was very very scary! But it was okay he still had half his air when they fished him out. They rezipped the zipper and put him back in. He was fine this time but after they took his wife out the kind of ignored him and he had an asthma attack. I also have lung problems and after a while I started feeling strangled but they fished me out as soon as I complained. So I would advise this to people with asthma only if you have an inhaler cause we did not. The workers completely left us sitting outside while he had his asthma attack which was not cool. But despite all this we still had a blast and the attack only lasted a few minutes!

I had heard good things about Safari Quest. My son wanted to have his birthday party here. So we booked it! It was extremely hot and miserable! The hostess was never around. It was poorly decorated as everything looked the same nothing special. Definitely was not impressed nor was it worth the money....way over priced!

15 Best Things to Do in Hammond (LA)

In Southeast Louisiana’s Northshore region, the city of Hammond sits a few miles from the huge swamplands between Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain.

With a townscape shaded by venerable live oaks, this is a place to discover regional hallmarks like Cajun cooking and super-fresh seafood, combined with guided swamp tours and encounters with alligators.

The presence of Southeastern, the third-largest university in the state, adds a youthful vitality to Hammond.

This comes to the fore in the buzzing historic downtown, filled with museums, galleries, community events, and a big choice of places to eat and drink.

1. Downtown Hammond

Downtown Hammond

Hammond has gained national recognition for its vibrant, thriving and expertly preserved downtown district.

Going back to the 1880s, most of the city’s oldest buildings are concentrated onto these blocks divided by the Illinois Central Railroad tracks.

These contain a dizzying assortment of cafes, bars and restaurants, many catering to youthful clientele from Southeastern.

The Hammond Historic District website has a map for a self-guided walking tour of downtown’s landmarks, with 20 stops, mostly along Thomas St.

There’s a booming farmers’ market all year on Saturdays, with upwards of 60 vendors, and a whole raft of local shops downtown for art supplies, specialty foods, skating, flowers, gifts, clothes, fashion accessories and antiques.

2. Cajun Dining

Crab Cakes

If you’re in search of Cajun and Creole seafood classics you can’t do much better than Hammond.

You’ve got a boatload of local joints, with menus brimming with favorites like boiled shrimp and crawfish (in season), seafood gumbo, fried catfish, shrimp or oyster po-boys, shrimp étouffée, crab cake, blackened redfish, and scores of other regional specialties from red beans to boudin sausage.

For just a small selection of the many local eateries around Hammond you’ve got Don’s Seafood (1915 S Morrison Blvd), B&J Seafood (2504 W Church St), Cate Street Seafood Station (308 S Cate St), Blackened Brew (12 W Thomas St) and Chookie’s Seafood & Oyster Bar (45654 University Park Dr).

3. Joyce Wildlife Swamp Walk Nature Trail

Joyce Wildlife Swamp Walk Nature Trail

Ten miles south of Hammond you’ll reach the Joyce Wildlife Management Area, comprising 35,000 acres of swampland between Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain.

Inhabited by numerous waterfowl species, as well as ospreys, bald eagles, spring and fall neotropical migrants, American alligators and many more, this wilderness is impenetrable without a boat (tours are available).

But on the northwest corner you can set foot in a portion of the protected area via a stretch of boardwalk that was constructed in 1990.

Taking your time to appreciate the tranquility and read the informative signs, you’ll need about an hour to enjoy the Joyce Wildlife Swamp Walk and will have a lot of chances to photograph wildlife, from turtles to snakes, gators and pink spoonbills.

4. Hammond Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

The best way to start a weekend in Hammond is at the bustling farmers’ market, a diverse, year-round gathering of 60+ vendors at the Old Feed & Seed lot downtown (at the time of writing).

During the long growing season there’s an amazing abundance of locally harvested fresh produce, and rules state that everything sold here has to be grown or produced by the vendor, so you know you’ll be buying direct.

You’ve also got plants, eggs, preserves, handmade soaps, fresh breads, king cake (in season), flowers, sauces, candy, tea kits, interesting arts and crafts, and delicious prepared food, from gumbo to tamales to mirlitons.

Winter is a little slower of course, but there’s still more than enough local commerce to make the market a year-round enterprise.

5. Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum

Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum

One of more than two dozen sites on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail, this institution displays and celebrates the life and work of African Americans in Louisiana’s Florida Parishes.

The museum is made up of eight galleries shining a light on a spectrum of topics, such as the Underground Railroad, African American inventors and important personalities in the world of entertainment, culture and sports.

There’s an interactive genealogy lab, established by Southeastern Louisiana University, while Southern University is responsible for the main gallery, taking you on a whirlwind trip through the history of Africa, the cradle of humanity.

The museum is also renowned for its powerful series of 26 8×8 murals recording the history of African Americans, from the nightmarish Middle Passage to the Civil Rights Movement.

6. Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center

Children’s Museum

A major attraction in downtown Hammond is this interactive children’s museum, for kids up to ten years old.

The Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center is all about hands-on and experiential learning, at dynamic and region-specific exhibits like a music factory, vet clinic, shrimp boat, hot air balloon, Middendorf’s restaurant, dino dig, rock climbing wall and art station, to name a small few.

Rooted in South Louisiana culture, these open-ended learning experiences help encourage problem solving, improve motor skills and spark the imagination.

7. Mitchell’s Swamp Adventures

Mitchell’s Swamp Adventures

Bruce “The Alligatorman” Mitchell, from History’s “Swamp People: Serpent Invasion”, runs this tour company exploring the swamps, bayous and passes south of Hammond between lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain.

You’ll be riding in the same 20ft Go Devil boat in which Bruce hunts alligators. A resourceful man who has long forged a livelihood in this environment, Bruce knows the country like the back of his hand.

Your trip will be filled with fascinating anecdotes and historical snippets, as you get up close to an amazing diversity of wildlife, from gators to turtles, snakes, frogs, nutria and the astonishing array of birdlife inhabiting these wetlands.

8. Zemurray Park

Zemurray Park

On just over 30 acres, this community park is within walking distance south of downtown Hammond.

Running through the heart of Zemurray Park is a serpentine pond, popular with waterfowl and traced by a walking trail 0.7 miles long.

Zemurray Park is the setting for Hammond’s outdoor public pool, open throughout the summer, along with tennis courts, a cute miniature train, a dog park, a skate park, three baseball fields, a dog park and an excellent playground area for wee ones.

The pond is a fishing spot, stocked with bluegill, channel catfish, green sunfish, largemouth bass, rainbow trout and redear sunfish, while the park is the location for Hammond’s annual Christmas lights.

9. Gnarly Barley Brewing

Gnarly Barley Brewing

Founded in 2014 by a couple of Southeast Louisiana natives, this craft brewery in Hammond sprung from a homebrewing operation a few years before.

Gnarly Barley Brewing is now an award-winning brand, distributed across the Greater New Orleans area, as well as the Northshore, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and Houma.

You can visit the 14,000-square-foot facility in Hammond for a guided tour, while the open-air taproom here also lets you check out the brewery’s inner-workings.

Year-round beers are Skater Aid (Italian Pilsner), Jucifer IPA, Catahoula Common and Korova Milk Porter, while there’s a whole catalog of seasonal beers and limited releases.

The taproom is open seven days a week, and the calendar is filled with live music, brewing workshops, yoga sessions and food truck happenings.

10. Kliebert & Son’s Gator Tours

Alligator

An animal that always inspires fascination in Southeast Louisiana is the American alligator, and in Hammond you’re just a few minutes from an alligator farm welcoming the public for tours.

Kliebert & Son’s have been in the trade for more than half a century, and opens its doors March through October. Learning interesting details about this formidable creature you can watch demonstrations and even interact with baby alligators.

The farm has a variety of other animals, including wallabies, emus, snakes, several turtle species, as well as a bird sanctuary with nesting herons and egrets.

11. Southeastern Louisiana University (Southeastern)

McGehee Hall, Southeastern Louisiana University

Founded in 1925 and expanded rapidly in the 90s and 00s, the third-largest university in the state is just a few blocks north of downtown Hammond.

You don’t need to be a prospective student to be interested in a visit. For one thing, the campus is scattered with beautiful live oaks, including the centuries-old Friendship Oak, with pride of place at the central Friendship Circle.

The oldest building on the campus is McGehee Hall, a handsome example of Depression Gothic completed in 1935 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Southeastern has 14 varsity teams competing as the Southeastern Louisiana Lions and Lady Lions in the Southland Conference.

There’s sports action at venues like the 7,500-seat University Center arena (basketball and volleyball), and the 7,400-capacity Strawberry Stadium for football.

12. Cate Square Park

Picnic in the Park

Somewhere to take a break during your visit to downtown Hammond, Cate Square Park is on an entire city block, just north of the eateries along Thomas St.

From 1861 this was the site of a sawmill, tannery and shoe factory supplying the Confederate Army, all founded by one C. E. Cate, who later helped plan and promote the nascent city.

At the very center of Cate Square Park is a large open space, enclosed by an oval, tree-shaded path that leads to a gazebo and a fenced-in playground area for children.

13. Hammond Oak

Old Live Oak

If you can’t get enough of the twisting old live oaks that decorate the Hammond townscape, there’s an important one a couple of blocks east of downtown on the 500 block of East Charles Street.

A member tree of the Live Oak Society and labeled with an historical marker, this tangle of outstretched limbs is the Hammond Oak.

Buried under this moss-draped tree is the grave of the city’s Swedish founder and namesake, Peter Hammond (1798-1870). Close by are the graves of his wife, Caroline, his three daughters and “a favorite slave boy”.

14. Hammond Square

Shopping

The top shopping destination in Tangipahoa Parish can be found in the south of the city, off I-12.

The Hammond Square mall has been on the scene since 1977, and after a period of decline was given a new lease of life in the late 00s with a complete renovation.

This is now the second-largest open-air mall in the state, with dozens of national retailers including JCPenney, Foot Locker, Old Navy, Kay Jewelers, Claire’s, rue21, Target and many more.

The AMC Hammond Palace 10 is on the west side of the complex and there’s an assortment of eateries, from Olive Garden to Raising Cane’s.

15. Safari Quest Family Fun Center

Arcade

On the way to Hammond Square from downtown, Safari Quest Family Fun Center has a variety of attractions under one roof.

Foremost of these is an awesome Laser Tag Arena, set over 3,000 square feet, with multiple levels, a number of bases and even an observation deck for spectators.

A newly opened attraction is the indoor Ropes Course, set eight feet off the floor, with challenging transitional elements like netting, balancing beams, barrels and a skateboard.

Add to the mix the Watering Hole restaurant and an arcade with all the latest games, and you’ve got all you need for a self-contained day of family fun.

15 Best Things To Do In Hammond LA Today

October 16, 2023 //  by  Southern Trippers

If you are looking for the best things to do in Hammond, Louisiana, then you have come to the right place!

I love Hammond because it checks all the boxes! A beautiful town in the South that holds so much charm. A population of around 20,000 allows the area to feel like a small town while having enough people that you do not feel isolated!

Many trips have made my list of best Hammond activities easy to make! If you are traveling with a group, there is no shortage of options for everyone! There are cute date spots and so much for the history buffs. I already want to plan a trip back!

Located in the Eastern area of Louisiana , Hammond is forty-five miles east of Baton Rouge and 45 miles northwest of New Orleans ! This central location makes it easy to see both the capital city and the Big Easy! Let’s dive in and find some things to do in Hammond today!

The Louisiana state flag and United States flag flying side by side in Hammond Louisiana.

15 Best Things To Do In Hammond LA Today

Tangipahoa parish.

Tangipahoa Parish is one of my favorite places to visit in Hammond! Located in Southeast Louisiana, this perfect small town gives all the vibes and is home to the Strawberry Capital of the World! With so many annual festivals and every day activities, this should be on everyone’s list of what to do in Hammond!

The Sunshine Studio Creative Arts Center is one of my most recommended things to do in Hammond with kids! The Center is in a cottage (how cute is that?!) and is a place for kids to bring out their creative side. Catching a show at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts is great for older kiddos.

While in Tangipahoa Parish, check out the museums that honor the story of this deeply historical area. This area is a must for any trip to Hammond, LA!

A father and son picking strawberries in Tangipahoa Parish, one of the best things to do in Hammond Louisiana.

Hammond Square

One of the best things to do in Hammond for adults is a trip to Hammond Square ! This is the second largest open air retail center in all of Louisiana! I love that so many of my favorite shops are in one place! Whether I am shopping alone, or spending the day with my mom and sister, this is a must visit for me!

Hammond Square has almost fifty retailers for you to visit! There are some country wide franchise favorites like Target and TJ Maxx, but there are also hidden gems. You can get your hair and nails done, or grab lunch with your friends. This place has it all! A visit to Hammond Square is one of the things to do in Hammond that I really look forward to!

Two friends shopping and looking at a shirt in Hammond Square.

Downtown Hammond

A visit to Downtown Hammond should be top of the list for what to do in Hammond! I always feel like I have stepped back in time. In 2022, Downtown Hammond won the Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA), which recognizes communities for their excellence in comprehensive preservation-based commercial district revitalization!

In their Downtown, you can catch a show at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts, visit the library, or check out one of their many delicious restaurants! This idyllic downtown is one of the perfect places to visit in Hammond!

Located in the Joyce Wildlife Management Area is Swamp Walk! This is one of the most popular free things to do in Hammond and for good reason! Living in Florida, alligators are a part of life here, but if you are visiting anywhere that has them, and you have not seen them, I encourage you to try and see some of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat!

Joyce WMA is mostly a marsh and in 1990, Louisiana Wildlife Fish and Game constructed a boardwalk out over the swamp that gives people the opportunity to see the reptiles and amphibians that call those waters their home. Additionally, there are bald eagles and osprey that nest in the area. Come for the alligators and stay for the abundance of wildlife! Swamp Walk is one of the best activities in Hammond both educationally speaking and will sure to give you plenty of stories!

An alligator swimming through the marsh waters at Swamp Walk, one of the coolest free things to do in Hammond, Louisiana.

Lake Maurepas

Lake Maurepas is one of my top picks for best Hammond activities! Located in what is technically the Louisiana Bayou, this round, shallow, brackish lake is fed by four rives! The surface area of the lake is over ninety square miles and the average depth is approximately ten feet. I have to mention that tall cypresses grow out of the water!

This lake is a nature photographer’s dream with osprey, alligators, wood ducks, loons, deer, rabbits, and more! The only catch is that access to the lake is limited to boat canoe, or kayak only as there are no foot trails lakeside.

An osprey descending into the water to grab dinner over Lake Maruepas.

Lake Pontchartrain

Visiting Lake Pontchartrain is one of my favorite things to do near Hammond! This short forty minute drive will show you more of Louisiana and bring you to one of the best beaches near New Orleans ! This lake is the largest inland body of water in the state at 630 square miles, but surprisingly it is actually an estuary! This means that it is connected to the Gulf of Mexico through various bayous and rivers.

At Lake Pontchartrain you can fish and boating, whether on a sailboat or motorboat. If you are like me and do not own a boat, you can rent one here! You can also swim and lay out on the sand! There are five miles or bike baths that you can bike or walk, with plenty of benches to stop and enjoy the lake! If you bring your sweetie, this is one of the most romantic things to do in Hammond!

Downtown Farmers Market

The Hammond Farmers & Artisans Market is one of my most looked forward to free things to do in Hammond! Being able to explore a community of local artisans is such a beautiful way to see who the locals really are.

At the Farmers Market, there are farmers, producers, and artisans that are selling things they have made or grown themselves and that makes it extra special. Some of the goods available are farm fresh produce, plants, flowers, prepared food & grocery staples, fresh fish, meat, eggs, & dairy, artisan trade products, and farm crafts. This will always be one of the best activities in Hammond!

Safari Quest

One of my favorite attractions in Hammond LA is Safari Quest ! Do not let the name fool you, there are no wild animals on the premises! Safari Quest is a 3,000 square foot multi-level laser tag arena! But that’s not all! They also have an overhead ropes course adventure, Coconut Climbing Trees and a huge arcade!

There is no height or age requirement in the play arena, only for the ropes course since the participant needs to wear a harness. For this reason, this is one of the best things to do in Hammond with kids!

Four kids playing laser tag at Safari Quest.

Baton Rouge

Obviously not in Hammond, but Baton Rouge is only forty-five minutes away! Everyone flocks to New Orleans and I get it. It is seriously one of the coolest cities in the South, but Baton Rouge is honestly one of my favorite things to do near Hammond.

In Baton Rouge, you can tour the State Capital building and then check out the Old State Capitol building which made my list for fairytale castles in the South you should visit! Or if you wanted to get outside, Baton Rouge has some great hiking trails ! The quick trip is so worth it!

Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center

The Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center located downtown is one of the more fun things to do in Hammond with kids! Available to kiddos aged toddler to ten years old, the Discovery Center aims to be educational while incorporating a lot of hands-on play.

The exhibits include a shrimp boat, a vet clinic, Middendorf’s restaurant, a rock climbing wall, a hot air balloon, a theater, a music factory, an art station, a bubble station, a dinosaur dig, an excavation pit, and a handful more! The goal is to have fun, safe play activities that improve motor skills, encourage problem-solving, and stimulate the imagination. If you are traveling with kids, the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center is one of the best things to do in Hammond LA!

One Thirteen Terrace and Bar

Being a small town, there are limited things to do in Hammond at night, but a meal at One Thirteen Terrace and Bar is a must! The menu is locally sourced and the hospitality comes from the heart. I have a pretty limited diet, so I am going to share what my friends and family love when they come here! The prosciutto bruschetta appetizer tastes like you are in Italy!

For dinner, it is hard to beat their Hawaiian Ribeye which has a homemade Hawaiian marinade and a grilled pineapple. The Duck Confit is also delicious. For dessert, I recommend the Vanilla Crème Brûlée because it is served with berries, and surprisingly, mint!

One Thirteen also has a delicious weekend brunch menu! Dinner here is one of the laid back romantic things to do in Hammond Louisiana!

Gnarly Barley Brewing

Literally grown from someone brewing beer in their garage, Gnarly Barley Brewing is now brewing delicious craft beers out of a 14,000 square foot facility! Enjoying some beer in their taproom is by far one of the best things to do in Hammond for adults!

Did I mention earlier that the garage brewery was next to a half pipe? No wonder why one of their core beers is called Skater Aid! This crisp Pilsner has a light malt base and a clean and bright crisp finish.

The Catahoula Common is an American Lager named after the state dog of Louisiana! If you are feeling a little adventurous, the Korova Milk Porter is a Baltic Oatmeal Milk Porter has a sweet coffee and chocolate flavor.

Drinks at Gnarly Barley Brewing is one of the great things to do in Hammond at night.

Painting with a Twist

One of the things to do in Hammond at night that I always recommend is Painting with a Twist ! This is your typical wine and paint place, but everything that they teach turns out so cute! I think what makes this place special is their special event nights. Notably, they have themed trivia nights! from wizards to space nights and nineties coffeehouse trivia, you are sure to find a topic that would be fun for you and a group of friends!

They also have a Paint Your Pet night which I think is so cute! They also host everything from bachelorette parties, to kids parties, and family days! Check out Painting with a Twist for one of my favorite attractions in Hammond LA!

Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum

If you are looking for things to do in Hammond today, I highly recommend the Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum. This museum is a top recommendation for me because their purpose is to tell the story of African Americans in all their permutations:  family life, Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, inventions, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law, and technology instead of limiting them to one thing.

There are eight galleries and over twenty original murals within the museum. The original art has all African-American artists and you can really see and feel how their culture comes to life. A visit to this museum is one of the more important things to do in Hammond LA.

Cate Square Park

Definitely a classic choice, but one of the best things to do in Hammond is a visit to Cate Square Park. There is something about being outside in a developed area that just feels nice. The park is 2.1 acres large and covers an entire city block. There is a playground for the kids, a gazebo area to eat lunch, and plenty of grass to spread out and play a game of soccer or just lay out and read.

Located in the heart of downtown Hammond, there are plenty of places nearby to grab lunch or coffee! Whether you are by yourself or with a group, Cate Square Park is one of the fun things to do in Hammond for a few hours!
