Although there is no shortage of capable web browsers on the Mac ecosystem, most still prefer the built-in Safari to surf the web. Even with continuous updates and improvements, the usual niggles with Safari remain more or less the same. Sometimes, Safari doesn’t find a server on Mac , fails to play videos , and even closes the tab without your consent. The latter can be quite irritating, and here is why Safari keeps closing tabs on Mac.

Safari closing tabs on its own can irritate you during work hours. It even breaks your research, too. Multiple factors can affect your Safari experience. It can be due to a lack of memory, buggy iCloud syncing, outdated extensions, corrupt cache, etc. Let’s go through the steps to stop Safari from automatically closing tabs.

1. Disable Auto-Close Tabs

Safari offers an option to auto-close tabs after a certain period of activity. If you have enabled the option, Safari closes the tabs after a fixed time. You need to revert your decision from Safari Settings. Go through the steps below.

Step 1: Launch Safari on Mac. Click Safari at the top.

Step 2: Open Settings.

Step 3: Move to the Tabs menu. Expand the ‘Automatically close tabs’ menu and select Manually.

Restart Safari, and it shouldn’t auto-close tabs.

2. High RAM Usage in Safari

When you have dozens of tabs open in Safari, it may lead to high RAM usage on your Mac. If you have a Mac with 8GB of RAM and multiple apps open in the background, the system may kill several tabs to free up memory. You can confirm the same from the Activity Monitor menu and close unnecessary apps.

Step 1: Open the applications menu and launch Activity Monitor.

Step 2: Move to the Memory tab. Check the memory breakdown at the bottom.

3. Disable iCloud Syncing in Safari

If the iCloud sync is broken, Safari may close tabs independently. Safari relies on iCloud to sync your tabs across all the devices. Here’s how you can disable iCloud syncing for Safari on Mac.

Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the Mac menu bar. Open System Settings.

Step 2: Select your account and open iCloud.

Step 3: Select Show all under ‘Apps Using iCloud.’

Step 4: Disable the toggle beside Safari.

4. Disable Private Relay on Mac

Private Relay is a part of iCloud+ that reroutes Safari traffic via Apple’s servers to shield your browsing details from advertisers. When the third-party server isn’t working as expected, it may break your Safari experience and auto-close tabs.

Step 1: Go to Apple’s system settings on Mac (check the steps above).

Step 2: Select your profile and open iCloud.

Mac Basics: Safari unexpectedly quit. Now what?

In this basic troubleshooting tutorial, you will learn how to uncover the issues behind Safari unexpectedly quitting.

When you are sure Safari has been updated, the next place to check for issues is with third-party plug-ins. To test for this:

Open Safari and navigate to Safari > Preferences (Command + , ).

Deselect the box to "Enable plug-ins" and continue using Safari normally. If you find that the program acts normally, you need to update or delete one or more of your third-party plug-ins.
Be sure you are logged in to an administrator's account on your Mac.

~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

Move all the plug-ins in these two folders to a different location (a folder on your Desktop works well for this).
Recheck the "Enable plug-ins" box in the Security section of the Preferences window.

/Library/InputManagers and ~/Library/InputManagers

Select as many options as you want and click Reset. Keep in mind that some options delete preferences and saved passwords.

Other troubleshooting Web Clip widgets can cause Safari to unexpectedly quit. Go to Dashboard on your Mac and remove your Web Clip widgets. Return to Safari and see if the quitting persists. You can then access the original website of your Web Clips and make new ones.

Create a new user account. From System Preferences click Accounts. Click the (+) button and fill in the information to create a new user on your Mac. Be sure to give the new user Administrator access. Doing this will help you determine if your Safari issue is system-wide or restricted to your original user account.

Checking your ISP or Internet connection can help you determine if your issue is on your Mac or the fault of your Internet service provider. If possible, attempt to connect your Mac to a different Internet source and see if the issue persists. If it does not, contact your home ISP for assistance.

Reinstalling Safari can help overwrite issues if you happened to download and install a corrupt version of Safari.

Download and install the latest version of the Mac OS X Combo Update package. Even if you already have the latest version installed, the Combo Update package for your Mac may provide the appropriate fix for your issues.

As a last case scenario, you may need to completely reinstall Mac OS X. Of course, if you get to this step, be sure to have a stable backup of all your important data.

Safari Isn’t Responding, Keeps Crashing or Freezing, Fix

Safari is not working as expected? This article explains what you can do if Safari doesn’t respond, and keeps freezing or crashing on your Mac. You may also see the rotating color wheel or “spinning beach ball”. A lot of users are also reporting that Safari crashes when they open the Preferences pane.

Safari is a great and stable browser. However, performance-related problems (freezing or crashing) may still occur rarely.

You may also see “Safari quit unexpectedly” messages.

An unresponsive Safari may cause your Mac to freeze also.

If you are experiencing this issue, please try the steps below. After each step, try to open Safari to see if your problem is fixed.

2. Empty Cache in Safari

Emptying all Safari caches may fix your problem. It is a good idea to do this in Safe Mode because Safe Mode clears your Mac’s system cache and may repair issues. This is also a good idea because if your experience Safari crashes when you want to open Safari Preferences. Please follow the steps below:

Turn off your Mac.
Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Shift key.
Keep holding the key until you see the login screen. Then release the Shift key and log in.
Your computer is now in Safe Mode. Your computer may be slower in Safe Mode, this is normal.
Now go to the Finder.
From the menu bar, click Go and Go to Folder (or press Command, Shift, G keys together).
Enter the following and click Go:

Delete files by dragging them to the Trash.
Now exit Safe Mode by restarting your Mac normally. Do not press the Shift key.
When your Mac turns on, and then try to open Safari to see if it now crashes or freezes.

3. Safari Extensions

You may be having this problem because of third party extensions you may have. There are two steps you should take:

First, make sure that if your issue caused by an extension.
If an extension is the problem, then we will need to determine which extensions are causing the problem. Here is how:

Please follow the steps below to turn off extensions to figure out whether they are causing the problems:

Open Safari and in Safari, click Safari and Preferences.
Click the Extensions tab. Then deselect all of the extension’s checkboxes to disable them.
Now exit Preferences and test Safari. If your problem is not fixed, you can now turn on the extensions as they are not the issue. If your problem is fixed, it means that your problem caused by one of your extensions. What you can do is to re-enable the extensions one by one until you find the problematic extension. When you find it, you can remove (by clicking the Uninstall button), update, or contact its developer for further help.

If your issue continues to persist, you may want to fully reset Safari .

Safari quitting unexpectedly all the time

Every time i open safari it will quit after the web page is fully loaded. Is this a problem with safari or could another program be causing it to quit. I was having problems with losing my settings but it seemed to fix itself after file vault cleared the free space on the HD. Any ideas for a quick fix, should i download another web browser?

Try trashing your Safari preference file. The path: Macintosh HD ---> Users ---> * your user account * ---> Library ---> Preferences ---> com.apple.Safari.plist

Check whether you have any incompatible plug-ins installed (eg. Acidsearch, SIMBL bundle) in your ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins folder. Just remove them and see whether it will solve your problem. You can also delete the "com.apple.Safari.plist" in ~/Library/Preferences folder (You should start the Safari only after deleting the file).

Safe - as long as you only delete that one file - not the whole preferences folder like one of them above. It is safe removing a plist file. A new one is created the next time you open the app. All it does is reset the preferences for that app back to default. You can always not empty the trash until you try it. That way you can put the original one back in place if you want.

What do you mean by "Firefox loads"? Opening the program when it's not running? Loading a web page? If the latter, you're comparing the same page, right?

Ok, when you open the browser, it goes to your homepage. I'm assuming that's the one that's loading slower on Safari. So, compare some other web sites. Do they all load slower on Safari? If not, maybe something changed on your homepage that Safari doesn't handle as well as Firefox.
