  • The Reunification Palace : Here on April 30th, 1975 the Vietnam War officially ended when tank number 843 of the North Vietnamese Army crashed through the gates of what was, at the time the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam.
  • War Remnants Museum: Formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes, this is a poignant display of the futility of war. Some of the black and white photography in the ‘Requiem’ exhibit is particularly touching, dedicated to both foreign and Vietnamese journalists and photographers who perished during the conflict. The courtyard outside contains the spoils of war, namely rusting jets, tanks and cannons captured from the American military machine.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office : Built between 1877 and 1883 this is one of the best examples of classical French colonial architecture. Remarkably every stone used in its creation was shipped from France to Vietnam. Her two 40m towers, topped with iron spires dominate the city’s skyline. The Old Post Office is another example of French colonial architecture and is also the country’s largest post office.
  • Jade Emperor Pagoda: Building in 1909 in honor of the supreme Taoist god, this is one of the most spectacularly atmospheric temples in HCMC, stuffed with statues of phantasmal divinities and grotesque heroes. The pungent smoke of incense fills the air, obscuring the exquisite woodcarvings.
  • Cu Chi Tunnels : Watch a short introductory video showing how they were constructed, then spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels. Also, on display are various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters made by 500 pound bombs dropped by B52 bombers. For those interested there’s even the opportunity to fire off rounds from an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range

Sapa tour Package

Great value for money with 4 stars hotel accommodation for 4 couples. The tour guide has been very helpful and brought us to amazing places in Sapa. We want to thanks Thuy the tour guide and especially Mark from Impress Travel for his great service and assurance throughout our trip. We’ll definitely use his service for other tour packages in other parts of Vietnam.

I booked with Impress Travel in July. My contact person was Tommy Thang. He is an amazing person. He was very helpful. He changed my program twice for me. Very accommodating! We started our holiday in the north (Sapa)of Vietnam and travelled down to HCMC. The tour was fantastic, Tommy's arrangements were to the"T". I will always use them if I have to visit the area again and recommend them to one and all. Thank you once again Mr.Tommy and the Impress Team. Sulaiman Pochee South Africa

Tour of Vietnam

Impress travel were amazing. Did my bookings with Daniel for our tour of Vietnam and I must say Daniel was very professional and prompt with his services. All the arrangement, plans, pick-up & drop-off services, hotels, vehicles, sightseeing tours and guides were spot on and excellent. Did 4 nights Hanoi, 1 night Hà Long Bay cruise, 3 nights Hoian, 4 nights Saigon and 1 night in Can Tho. It was totally awesome. Every part of the journey was superbly arranged and planned. I will highly recommend Impress Travel for anyone interested in visiting Vietnam. Very organized and reliable!

So glad I found Impress Travel

At first, I was just planning a trip to Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Ninh Binh for my small family. Some close friends heard about our plans and wanted to join the trip. Eventually the group grew to be 7 families, with 25 adults and children of varying interests and expectations.  While I was excited at the prospect of touring Vietnam with good friends, I felt anxiously responsible to ascertain that everything must be well organized and everyone satisfied. This is why I am so very, very glad to have found Impress Travel. Mr. Mark responded quickly to all my inquiries, customized a wonderful trip according to the group's preferences, tirelessly worked out every detail for our 7-day trip, all at a reasonable price. Our guide, Trung, is knowledgeable, helpful, quick to respond to any need, and well-loved by everyone in the group. All my friends found this a marvelous trip, filled with beautiful memories, very much to my delight and relief!

North Vietnam - Sapa, Halong Bay, Hanoi+ Bai Dinh

Vietnam Travel with Mr. Mark

Hanoi,Sapa,Hanoi,Danang,Hanoi 8D7N Online searching for a reliable travel agent n come across Impress Travel. Contacted

Accommodations were good especially Thang Long Espana Hotel (the Hotel Management automated upgraded us to VIP rooms. Is really unexpected). Overalled tours n places visited very well but only local guides r not good organizing the itineraries. Especially at Sapa Lao Cai and Cat Cat Villages walking tours push to the same day about 8hours for 7km (which is on 1st&2nd days arrival) so tiring. Lunch not good enough 4 so many hours of walking. In Danang Bana Hill the local guide shd arrange 2 visit Bana Hill 1st n not last coz' spend a short time n not nice photos taken due to rain (went in morning time no rain). Overall tours, hotels, transportation, prices are strongly recommended. Especially Daniel Dang Impress Travel for welcoming and bye-bye wishes. Daniel Dang tks from 8 of us having a wonderful time n memorable trip for 8D7N Sapa, Hanoi, Danang with Impress Travel. Meet u all again.

5days Hanoi-Tam Coc-Ninh Binh-Halong Bay

We are family of 6 from Singapore and Malaysia joining Hanoi Impress Travel on 30 October-04 November 2019. We are really impressed with the company and tour guides with their professionalism and well organised arrangement. Lily is our guide for Hanoi, Tam Coc and Ninh Binh. She is excellent and very informative. She even taking care of us until late night. We walk us from Old Quarters to the hotel and brought us to try the famous road side foods. She even helped us to pay for our order to avoid overcharge by the stall. Another guide, David BK (Swan Cruise) brought us to Halong Bay cruise. He is excellent and humorous. He handles everything throughout the trip. He served meals for guests on the cruise, organised happy hour, guiding us for Kayaking, teaching Taiji and cooking class on cruise. The cruise ship is ok and the hotel in Hanoi-Adamas Hotel is small but new and clean with reasonable ok breakfast. Anyway thank you for the wonderful arrangement.

Professional and well organized

We booked a 8 day private tour package for 9 persons for Northern and Central Vietnam . We experienced great and very professional service from the Impress travel team. Tommy was very easy to contact and accommodated our requests. All the tour guides were very good, spoke good English, friendly and patient. All the vehicles were very clean , spacious enough for our group of 6 adults and 3 children. The drivers were extremely safe and ontime. Meals were served in clean restaurants. Overall we had a good holiday .Thank you Tommy and Impress travel for a great experience.

Excellent, Polite and Helpful Team

Impress Travels has been very helpful in making our vietnam travel amazing. We were a bunch of 7 friends wanting to go on a budget trip covering most locations. Hence, this subjected to a lot of changes during our discussion with the tour guide Daniel. However, he has been patient enough in hearing out our needs - be it itienary , hotel bookings or even the mode of payment.

They really understand your needs. And needless to say our experience was amazing. All of this support and help has really made our vietnam trip the most memorable as far ❤️

5D/4N Hanoi-Ninh Binh- Halong Bay

I was searching for a reliable travel agent and come across Impress Travel and the many reviews of them. I booked 5D/4N, Hanoi-Trang An-Halong Bay private trip for a party of 6. I communicated with Mr Daniel Dang throughout the time until the day we arrived. Mr Daniel is very patient, helpful, and accommodating to our requirements despite many changes made to the itinerary. The price is very reasonable unlike other travel agents. Our tour guide, Lily was very friendly and efficientknowledgeable and speak good English. Highly recommend “Trang An Boat Tour”. The caves was spectacular and beautifully. 2D/1N Halong Bay – Swan Cruise was awesome with amazing view of the cave. Our guide Mr David was hilarious, helpful, accommodating, and everything was well organized. Beside the normal activities of kayaking, swimming, Tai Chi, culinary lesson, we are indeed very very fortunate to have the chance to celebrate the “Mooncake Festival” while cruising and admiring the full moon. Spread of mooncake, dessert, sweet snack, fruits, cocktail, beer and mini dragon dance complete the celebration. Tourists from all over the world party all night long.

Although we paid for a 3-star package, the hotel (Thang Long Espana Hotel), meals and transport provided were also above average. Our gang have a very enjoyable and memorable trip in Hanoi. Hanoi – Duong Lam - Halong Bay – Hue – Danang – Hoi An – Ho Chi Minh city – Mekong Delta – Cai Be – Vinh Long – Can Tho – Phu Quoc Island - Ho Chi Minh city. It is worth talking about details, say what you want to see, watch the hotels, indicate which rooms you want, the office will organize everything for you. I highly recommend! The whole trip was arranged with the active help of Mr. Daniel Dang.

Our 3 week tour of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos was excellent

Thanks to Mr Tommy and staff for putting together an active and interesting tour in all 3 countries. In every city or town we had we met by very nice, friendly and knowledgeable guides. We went in June which was HOT HOT HOT and were always so happy to have an air conditioned vehicle with cold water waiting for us. We traveled by planes, trains, automobiles and boats and all were fabulously coordinated by Mr Tommy without fail. The selection of sites helped us enjoy so many aspects of all 3 countries!

MAGNIFICENT VIETNAM TOUR FROM SAIGON TO HANOI - 11 DAYS

In the afternoon, you’ll be free to do your own activities or can engage some our following optional tours:

Optional Tour: Hanoi Street Food (D)

At 18.00, our tour guide will welcome you at your hotel lobby, then start the tour to Hanoi Old Quarter “36 streets” to visit some famous and specialized- food families or stalls/ local restaurants, shops where they run their business every day, certainly you will watch and taste some dishes, we can customize vegetarian or special food too.

Special thing that tours guide would like to introduce some popular authentic food in lovely mini restaurants (not luxury restaurants) where you feel comfortable to sit down and enjoy some favorite dishes and nice drinks too.

It’s interesting to hear from tour guide about the history of the old quarter in Hanoi, it is thousand years old and today retains much of the old flavor that made the area special in earlier times, each street was the exclusive domain of one trade (guilds) so there are whole streets of blacksmiths, silver shops, paper shops, headstone makers and more. Originally there were just 36 streets in the old quarter but today there are more than 50 streets.

It is very difficult to find some local food stalls and mini restaurants on your own in hidden alleys and sidewalks, certainly the best way to make it easy is joining with us, taking part in this special tour to learn about Vietnamese cuisine, culture, people, and language.

After all, we will give you an unique experience to try the foods of the local Hanoi people, we ensure the food is handled hygienically and provide a comfortable venue for the tastings. The benefit also goes back to the vendors or restaurants/ families as we buy directly from them.

At 21.00, our tour guide say goodbye to you, and will help you order taxi or show you direction back your hotel.

How safe is Vietnam?

iVietnam is a relatively safe country to visit but there are increasing instances of theft, especially in HCMC where pickpockets and snatch thieves on motorbikes are the worst menace. The best tip is to be vigilant at all times. Often cute kids or old grannies have deft fingers. Leave all valuables (expensive watches, jewellery, glasses, etc.) at home, and don’t even wear flash costume jewellery. Make sure you have a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags at all times and never leave anything you value lying around unattended. I would also not advise taking cyclos late at night, especially in HCMC. our guides will advise you what is “do and don’t” case by case.

What about medical insurance?

It is advised that travelers should have some form of medical insurance before arriving in Vietnam. Although there are several international medical clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, generally the country still lacks adequate medical care for serious illnesses and injuries, especially in other areas. Therefore, we advise that travelers have sufficient cover for emergency medical care as a precautionary measure. Should I take my money in cash or travellers’cheques? The official currency of Vietnam is the dong, which can not be purchased outside Vietnam. The main banks in Hanoi and HCMC can handle a fairly broad range of currencies nowadays, but the dollar is still the most widely accepted. I therefore recommend taking a combination of US$ cash and US$ travellers’ cheques, with the bulk in travellers’ cheques for safety. American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook cheques are the most recognised brands.

How to Travel From Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi: By Train, Bus, Plane, and Car

saigon to hanoi tour

Although Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam , Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon , is the country's biggest city. With Ho Chi Minh City in the south and Hanoi in the north, you can experience the breadth of Vietnam's complex history and culture by visiting both. Despite the nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) that separate these major cities, there are many different ways to make this trip. Vietnam's oblong shape makes the overland journey from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi a long one, but fortunately flights are quite affordable and it's easy to squeeze both cities into a packed itinerary. However, if you do choose to travel by rail or road, you can look forward to exciting stops along the way like the beaches of Nha Trang , the imperial city of Hue , and the historic trading port city of Hoi An .

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi?

Flying domestically in Vietnam is a lot more affordable than you might assume. Airlines like VietJet Air , Bamboo Airways , Jetstar , and even Vietnam Airlines offer non-stop flights for as low as $20 and $40 one-way. With daily flights offered across multiple airlines, flying offers travelers flexibility. Plus, when you consider the amount of time you'll save—which effectually will help you save money you'd otherwise spend on food and gas during an overland journey—flying is the most cost-effective option.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi?

A direct flight to Hanoi takes a little over 2 hours and even if you book a non-direct flight with a layover, flying is still likely the quickest way to go. If you're not getting on a plane, you should anticipate a journey of at least 30 hours. In terms of speed, flying is the most practical choice if you only have a short amount of time in Vietnam—albeit less adventurous than a road trip or taking an overnight sleeper train which will allow you to see more and experience Vietnam at a slower pace.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

Driving from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi is not advisable for travelers with little experience driving in Vietnam who may be unfamiliar with the rules of the road and local driving customs . It's a long journey with over 31 hours of driving, but realistically, it will take you at least two days when you account for overnight stops and side trips. Instead of driving straight through, you can stretch out the journey and make a nice road trip out of it and there are many interesting attractions and towns along the way that make for worthy detours.

Although Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City appear almost exactly on the same line of latitude on a map, you'll need to follow the curve of Vietnam's western border to get there. From Ho Chi Minh City, you'll take the QL14 northeast until you can get on the AH17, which you'll take all the way to Da Nang . From there, you can follow the QL1A north until you can switch to the CT01, which will bring you all the way to Hanoi. Another alternate route, that only requires 26 hours of driving time, is to travel through Cambodia and Laos . However with so many border crossings, this trip would likely take longer and you wouldn't get to see any of Vietnam's beautiful beaches .

How Long Is the Train Ride?

While still a time-consuming option, trains are the most scenic way to see parts of the Vietnam countryside normally overlooked by the majority of tourists. A direct trip via train without making any stops will take at least 31 hours, 30 minutes. However, you'll arrive well rested and can appreciate views of the countryside from the comfort of an air-conditioned car along the way. It's a long time to spend on a train, but you can purchase meal tickets on trains that cover a set meal delivered directly to your compartment or buy drinks and snacks from the carts that come around sporadically. Free boiling water is also available on tap to make your own tea, coffee, or instant noodles.

Sleeper trains come in the "hard" and "soft" varieties. Hard-sleeper cars—the cheaper of the two options—have six berths, meaning that you could be sandwiched between someone sleeping above and below you. Soft-sleeper cars are slightly more expensive but have only four people to each compartment. Luggage is kept with you for security and basic bedding is provided. The cheapest train ticket, a "soft seat," provides you with only a reclining chair in a cramped car. While not super luxurious, soft-sleeper trains are the most comfortable option for getting some sleep on the long journey.

While travel agencies and hotels can book tickets for a commission, the safest option is to book several days in advance directly at the train station. Tickets often get snatched up by resellers who know that tourists wait until the last minute to book. Some unsavory travel agents have been known to sell hard-sleeper train tickets for soft-sleeper prices. You won't be able to confront them once you are boarding your train and find out that you've been scammed.

Is There a Bus That Goes From Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi?

There are plenty of bus lines that run long-haul buses between northern and southern regions of Vietnam. While traveling by bus is incredibly cheap, chaotic road conditions provide less scenery and it's much harder to get a good night's sleep. Buses are also the slowest option for getting around. While they do provide some convenience—many tour companies will collect you right at your hotel and tickets are easy to book—you'll spend hours waiting in Vietnam's terrible traffic to collect other passengers and get out of the city. Always add an hour or two to the estimated arrival time to compensate for rest stops and traffic.

Night buses have small, horizontal bunk beds and can save you the expense of a night in a hotel, but between the swerving and the constant cacophony of horns, you'll get little rest. Because passengers ride in a mostly horizontal position, motion sickness is very likely, so pack some medication or ginger candy just in case you start to feel nauseous. Take the bus only if you need to save money or want the greatest amount of convenience and flexibility. Theft is a problem on overnight buses, so keep your wits about you and don't expect to get much sleep.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Hanoi?

Winters in Vietnam (December to February) see milder temperatures and less rain, but there is some difference in climate between Vietnam's northern and southern regions. While Ho Chi Minh City and the rest of the south are more tropical, Hanoi in the north can get quite cool in the winter with temperatures sometimes dropping as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) at night. Summers though are very hot in Hanoi and it also happens to be monsoon season . It's also worth noting that transportation options between Saigon and Hanoi fill up quickly around large holidays such as Tet (January or February) and Chinese New Year , so book well in advance!

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is approximately 19 miles (30 kilometers) from the city center and driving from the airport typically takes about 45 minutes. Taxis aren't too expensive, but if you're on a budget you can also take one of the buses that leave from the airport. Bus 86 goes straight to the Old Quarter while Bus 7 goes to the the Kim Ma bus station, and Bus 17 goes to the Long Bien bus station. If you've booked your flight on Jetstar Pacific, Vietnam Airlines, or VietJet Air, you may book yourself a shuttle to the city center when you buy your ticket.

What Is There to Do in Hanoi?

Your first stop in Hanoi should be to the Old Quarter, a neighborhood which is home to many of the best hotels and shopping locales . Then, you can make your way around to the main sights like the Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, and the Imperial Citadel. You can also head to the Thang Long Water Puppet theatre to see an authentic water puppet show or ride the elevator to the observation deck of the Lotte Center Hanoi, where you'll find 360-degree views of the city. And if you want to get out of the city, you can set out for a day cruise along the Red River, where it's even possible to travel as far as the postcard-perfect Ha Long Bay .

A direct train ride will take at least 31 hours, 30 minutes, but offers views and slow travel through Vietnamese countryside.

The distance between the two cities is nearly 1,000 miles.

Yes, plenty of bus lines run buses between northern and southern regions of Vietnam. However, traffic and crowds can make this a less pleasant option.

The day will start with a short transfer out of the town and a ride along the coast to Da Nang before starting the climb to the world-famous Hai Van Pass. The road climbs gradually up to 480 meters with many switchbacks and offers stunning views of the countryside overlooking the East Sea.

This tough climb is followed by a long smooth descent to your reward: lunch. In the afternoon you will continue to ride seashore for another 44 km before getting to Hue, the old capital of the Nguyen Dynasty

Hue to Hanoi

The morning will be spent cycling around Hue and learning about its most iconic sights, including Vong Canh Hill, the tombs of Khai Dinh, and the seven-story Thien Mu Pagoda. Hue is the ancient capital of Vietnam, so you’ll see some of the country’s most important political and religious buildings.

To finish the day, you will enjoy a relaxing cruise on the Perfume River back to Hue before catching an hour-long flight to Hanoi.

On arrival in the capital, you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter. Explore and dinner by yourself.

Hanoi to Mai Chau

In the morning, you’ll transfer 2.5 hours out of Hanoi before getting on your bike and starting a 30 km uphill ride to Hoa Binh lake, where you’ll stop for a picnic lunch.

After lunch, you will encounter more stunning views as you pass through ethnic villages of the Thai, an ethnic minority in Vietnam. You’ll cycle across rice paddies on a mix of single-track paths and rough trails before returning to Mai Chau, where you will have dinner and spend the night at a hotel.

Mai Chau to Pu Luong Nature Reserve

The morning will start off with a challenge: a long climb uphill towards Pu Luong nature reserve. Following shaded paths beside mountain streams, you’ll enter the reserve and have a traditional Vietnamese lunch overlooking the village’s rice terraces.

The next 10 km will be a flat ride through remote ethnic minority villages and some of the most beautiful rice fields in southeast Asia. After that, you’ll make one last short steep climb to your homestay, where riders can relax with a beer in the cool waters of one of the local natural springs. You’ll end the night with a fantastic BBQ dinner outdoors.

Pu Luong to Ninh Binh

You’ll start the morning by tearing downhill down several of Pu Luong’s steep terraced rice fields. The next 15 km will be spent on a remote x-country dirt track found by our route-planning team. The track passes by fortress-like karst formations and bamboo water wheel irrigation systems in traditional villages.

After an hour van transfer and a traditional lunch, you’ll ride a collection of quiet country paths and canal roads towards the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ninh Binh.

Ninh Binh to Hanoi

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll take a leisurely ride through the stunning natural beauty and historic sites of Ninh Binh, stopping often for stories and photos. You trade in our bikes for boats, where you will be paddled by a local guide for a 3 hours tour through pitch black river caves and hidden lagoons.

After lunch in Ninh Binh, you transfer to Hanoi and arrive before 6pm. Check in to your hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and dress up for your farewell dinner!

Hanoi Departure

Breakfast is provided, but you will have a chance to make new culinary and cultural discoveries on your own for the remainder of the day. If you need to extend your holiday (e.g. to visit Ha Long Bay), we are happy to assist.

Join us on a 17-day adventure in Vietnam bicycle touring from the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh City, otherwise known as Saigon, up to Hanoi. This epic southeast Asian bicycle tour showcases all aspects of Vietnam; from the poignant aspects of its war-torn history to its fragrant and unforgettable cuisine! Cycle through beautiful wetlands, backed by jagged peaks. Travel vast stretches of stunning beaches and sample the freshest seafood available, straight from ocean to table.

We begin our Vietnam bike tour in the South, exploring the vast underground Củ Chi tunnels in Saigon. From there, a short flight to Dalat, or “Le Petit Paris,” hopping on bikes to ride out of the charming city. Through colourful flower plantations, and onto the vistas of Than Tho Lake. Heading towards Da Chay, we’ll tackle challenging hills and the Hon Giao Pass. Muscles may ache, but the views are worth it.

We have a picturesque rest in the famous blue waters of Nha Trang as we reach the Southeast of Vietnam. The following day, gentle climbs snake along the Da Bia Mountain before a transfer to My Thanh. Here, we cycle Vietnam’s smooth terrain in Tuy Hoa, passing rice fields dotted with water buffalo. On to the Central Coast at Hoi An, the major trading port, before enjoying the scenic back roads of My Son. Enjoy the spectacular backdrop of mountains as we come into North Vietnam through Ninh Binh, before riding through the pineapple plantations of Haiphong. Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

Our biking adventure takes us 1,700 km from Saigon to Hanoi by bus, train, boat, and bike. We cycle about 787 km in 14 cycling days, enjoy a number of rest days, and lots of time can be spent sightseeing and exploring Vietnam. The cycling is on a mixture of well-surfaced roads and good quality dirt tracks.

Some of the days are quite long, and experienced riders usually find it sufficiently challenging. Faster cyclists can ride at their own pace after consulting the guides on the route. However, the average rider will want to ride and take photographs, stopping here and there to take in the magnificent sights. If you race through the country, you won't see much.

Our route has been designed to explore the Vietnamese countryside that lies on either side of the main north-south artery, Highway 1. We spend no more than 20 km on this busy route. Away from the main roads, cycling in Vietnam is a wonderful experience; the bicycle is the most common form of rural transport, and you will share the road and tracks with beautiful girls in flowing ao dais, school children, and farmers. Such is the friendliness your voice may not be capable of saying 'hello' by the end of the day!

Our rest days allow us to explore all the main tourist sites and places of interest along the way. You decide where you wish to go and in your own time. You can take this time on your own in Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue, and Halong Bay so that you can really get to know and perhaps understand Vietnam and its people. Additionally, of course, our guides will give you a fabulous extra personal and first-hand insight to their culture.

Suitability: This trip is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. This trip is not too arduous, and so riders with less experience are more than welcome, although the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. An air-conditioned bus travels behind the group for support. On some occasions, when it is impossible for the bus to follow on the dirt tracks, we arrange for motorcycle back up with snacks and water.

Biking Conditions: This trip is mainly on good-quality tarmac roads and some vehicle-width dirt roads. A support truck is always available to help when required, and participants can cycle as much or as little as they like and still enjoy the same views as the rest of the group.

Day 1 Saigon Arrival

Upon arrival we meet at Northern Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City, aka Saigon. After bike fitting you are free to explore the city before returning for a welcome dinner and trip briefing at one of the best restaurants in town!

Day 2 Saigon - Cu Chi Tunnels - Saigon

Today we transfer a short distance out of bustling Saigon and start riding to the haunting Cu Chi Tunnels, which the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) used during the Indochina War as their stronghold and torture site of foreign POWs for decades. After witnessing the war's devastating consequences, we return to Saigon by bus just in time for a visit to the notorious War Remnants Museum. Dinner is your choice.

Day 3 Saigon - Dalat

We rise very early this morning and transfer to the airport for a short flight to Dalat, once a favorite summer retreat among the French and Vietnamese royal families. Dubbed “Le Petit Paris”, the city is now a popular honeymoon destination for Vietnamese newlyweds. Upon arrival, we'll hop on our bikes, start off with a relatively easy ride around Dalat past Xuan Huong Lake, colorful flower plantations, the Old French Railway station and cycle out of town on picturesque and nearly traffic-free country lanes and back roads. After cycling in the shadow of Mount Langbian, we return to Dalat for dinner and you are free to take a walk to explore this lovely city.

Day 4 Dalat - Nha Trang

As we head towards Nha Trang, a famous seaside getaway, we’ll tackle some challenging hills before being rewarded by smooth descents with lush mountains as our backdrop. Our first break will be at the community house of highland hill tribe people, then we muscle up again to conquer Hon Giao pass (1,650 m) before a 30 km downhill to have lunch at the local restaurant by the river. In the afternoon it is back on the bikes for 28 km on a flat road. A short transfer takes us to the resort for a lively evening.

Day 5 Nha Trang Rest Day

For a rest day off the saddle we take a boat trip to stunning coral islands for swimming and snorkeling. On the way back we'll have a cultural stop at Pa Na Gar Cham towers. Built between the 7th and 12th centuries, four of the original eight towers are still actively used for worship by Cham, Chinese and Vietnamese Buddhists. Alternatively, those who would like to take it easy can lie down and soak up the sun by the beach.

Day 6 Nha Trang - Tuy Hoa

Following breakfast, we cycle out of Nha Trang and then take a short transfer to avoid busy Highway 1. Back on the bikes we cycle on to Dai Lanh Beach where we'll have a beach side lunch with time for a swim in the blue waters. To avoid another busy section of road a 20 minute transfer takes us to the start of our afternoon ride on a coastal road snaking along the base of Da Bia Mountain. There will be some gentle climbs before we drop to the flats and finish our day on quiet countryside lanes that are a mix of tarmac and dirt, passing soothing rice paddies and peaceful villages.

Day 7 Tuy Hoa - Quy Nhon

After transferring out of town to avoid the main highway we start biking along a remote, but well-surfaced road running parallel with the railway. The terrain rolls gently with breathtaking views of the highland hills. As we cycle through tribal and Viet villages we'll also spot potbellied pigs and barefooted children trotting across the trail. We then return to the highway and transfer a short distance to Quy Nhon.

Day 8 Quy Nhon - Quang Ngai

Today we follow the coastal road to Tra O Lagoon, the largest wetland in Binh Dinh Province and also a principal food source for the locals. While rolling we also take in the sea breeze and spot tranquil fishing villages lined along the coastline. After lunch at a local restaurant, the ride continues to Highway 1, where we transfer to Quang Ngai for the night.

Day 9 Quang Ngai - My Lai - Hoi An

In the morning we start cycling from the hotel to have the first stop at My Lai, the site of one of the deadliest massacres during the Indochina War. After a guided tour we continue cycling along the coast, passing many picturesque fishing villages with their colourful boats. We stop riding at lunch and transfer on to Hoi An so we can have the afternoon free to explore this historic town. A major trading port during the 17th and 18th centuries there are 844 structures of historical significance and many vibrant shopping streets, the city is a must for you to wander around and absorb the atmosphere.

Day 10 Hoi An - My Son - Hoi An

This morning we have a short transfer to avoid the highway and start riding to My Son, the ancient centre of the Cham Civilization dating back to the 4th century. We then cycle along scenic country back roads flanked by rice paddies, eucalyptus plantations and relaxing villages. Later the road stretches away from the coast, offering stunning views of the ocean as we head to My Son, once Champa’s most important city. After lunch we spend the afternoon visiting the site, and although many of the temples were destroyed from heavy bombing, enough have survived the war to impress most visitors. After the historical tour, we take the bus back to Hoi An. Dinner is your choice.

Day 11 Hoi An - Hue

This is probably the toughest ride of the tour, yet it is also one of the most rewarding. A short transfer out of Hoi An brings us to the start of our ride along the beach to Danang, known to some as Danang Beach, an R&R destination for American troops during the Vietnam War. It will be quickly time to change your gears and start the climb up Hai Van Pass, a steady and moderately challenging uphill with exhilarating views of the coast. From sea level we climb up to 480 m before flying down a long and smooth descent After lunch we venture away from the main highway and cruise on a coastal road for 44 km to Hue, the old capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty.

Day 12 Hue - Ninh Binh

Today we explore by bicycle and boat the rich history left behind by the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. We start by cycling directly from our hotel along the An Cuu (Perfume) River and head up to the tombs of Khai Dinh, the 12th king of the Nguyen dynasty, which were built from 1920-1931. After our visit, we continue to bike on a quiet route to Vong Canh hill, which is just 43 m high, but is the best place to catch a panoramic view of the Perfume River. We finish the ride today at the seven-story Thien Mu Pagoda, the tallest religious building in Vietnam. Built in 1601, it has become the symbol of the city, and be sure to get a photo with the marble turtle! We then walk to the boat pier nearby the pagoda to take a cruise on the Perfume River back to Hue. After refreshing ourselves and packing up we have a dinner at a local restaurant before boarding an overnight train to Ninh Binh.

Day 13 Ninh Binh - Cuc Phuong National Park

We arrive in Ninh Binh around 10 am (arrival time may vary). Following a short transfer to the local restaurant for washing up, bike fitting (we have new fleet of bikes in the north) and an early lunch, we start cycling through spectacular karst mountains towering over a blanket of rice paddies to the ancient city of Hoa Lu, the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries. After touring the temples we continue to Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam's first and largest natural reserve to check into our accommodation at the park.

Day 14 Cuc Phuong National Park - Hai Phong

We enjoy another ride to appreciate the park's beauty, visit the primate rescue centre and head east on serene back roads through a sea of pineapple plantations. Today while riding you’ll notice the differences between North and South Vietnam ranging from crops, villages, to clothing as we pass through countless lush greenery, lovely villages and friendly locals. Today's ride finishes just before we reach Highway 1 and our transfer to Hai Phong, one of Vietnam’s major ports.

Day 15 Hai Phong - Cat Ba Island

We transfer to the pier to catch a ferry to Fulong on Cat Ba Island. Located at the southern end of picturesque Halong Bay, the island is home to one of Vietnam’s most exquisite natural treasures, Cat Ba National Park. Once we get off the boat we cycle 26 km on the island’s only road before enjoying lunch in town. In the afternoon you are free to explore the surroundings before spending the night on this heavenly island.

Day 16 Halong Bay - Hanoi

We have a short ride in the morning and head for a memorable cruise through majestic Halong Bay. With its towering limestone karts protruding from the emerald sea, Halong Bay is truly one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world. Legend has it that it was formed by a great dragon that descended from the mountain into the sea. The boat trip is definitely rewarding after the long biking expedition. We then transfer to Hanoi and meet again in the evening for our farewell dinner at one of the many fine restaurants in the city.

Day 17 Onward Travel

In the morning you are free to do last-minute shopping or take a short tour around the Vietnamese capital before catching your onward flight. If you would like to extend your stay in Hanoi, please contact us for best hotel deals and rates.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section.

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a mountain bike, preferably with front suspension in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas.

If your nationality is not on the list for e-visa eligibility, or you need options for longer stays or multiple entries, then you may consider Visa on Arrival. The process for this is more complicated than e-visa and requires the acquisition of a visa letter prior to arrival. Please see here for a detailed overview.

Recommended vaccinations are typhoid, polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. A certificate for Yellow Fever is required when arriving from an infected area within six days. Vietnam is a malarial area and you will need to take anti-malarial tablets. Please speak to your doctor for the most up to date information.

Weather in Vietnam is divided into 4 main regions - the far north, north, central and south.

The far north can get very cold in December and January while the dry season runs from October to late March and the wet season between April to September.

In Hanoi & the north, it is hot, wet and humid from May to October while November to April is cooler and dry.

Central Vietnam experiences hot, dry weather between January & August with temperatures ranging in the mid 30°C. High levels of rainfall are during September - November.

Southern Vietnam is dry and hot from November to April, and warm and wet between May & October, with the highest rainfall in June, July & August.

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner. Most meals are Vietnamese food and features noodles, rice curries and soups. Vietnamese cuisine is world famous and we make sure you sample as much variety as possible. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water, some energy-restoring local fruit, and soft drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. Beer is freely available everywhere in Vietnam but is NOT included in the price.

Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for traveling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveler of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra dollars, perhaps US$10, for incidentals. It is customary to tip local tour guides and drivers, however, the amount you give should be dependent on the level of service you receive. As a general guide, we suggest US$ 3-4 per person per day is appropriate.

The official national currency is the Vietnam dong (d), but the US dollar is widely accepted in tourist centers. However, in smaller towns and villages the dong is preferred. ATMs are available in all major tourist destinations and big cities. Vietcombank has the best network with a single withdrawal limit of 2,000,000d (about US$125). Most major currencies can be exchanged at leading banks in Vietnam, but the US dollar is preferred away from the tourist centers. Changing US$100 will make you an instant millionaire! You cannot legally take the dong out of Vietnam but you can reconvert reasonable amounts of it into US dollars on departure.

Top Things To Do in Hanoi, Vietnam

W e arrived to Hanoi, Vietnam via airplane. The 40-minute ride from the airport to the city in a minibus cost ₫100,000 (Vietnamese Dong)(approximately 4.50 USD) per person. However, the 40 minute ride, turned into two hours, after waiting to fill the minibus and dropping others off. If you do not have the time to wait, you can take a taxi for around ₫400,000.

➳ Read More:  What to do in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam in a 3 day-2 night Cruise

If you are traveling to Hanoi with three or four people, remember that the taxi is equivalently priced as waiting for a minibus.

We arrived in the evening, so we just walked around neighborhood to check out the the mini shops, where you can find pretty much anything.

What to do and see in Hanoi:

Hoan kiem lake.

The next day we woke up early and left to the Hoan Kiem Lake. The lake itself is dirty but has tons of shops around the edges, as well as great picture opportunities across the lake. In the middle of the lake is Turtle Tower, a small temple which you cannot access.

Jade Mountain Temple

The lake also has a beautiful red bridge that takes you to the Jade Mountain Temple, on a larger island within the lake. It provides a beautiful oasis in the center of a bustling city.

Entrance fee:  30,000 dong or 15,000 with a student ID.

Hanoi Opera House

We walked east, away from the lake along the street until we hit the Hanoi Opera House and the Hanoi Stock Exchange building. The Opera house is a beautiful building to see and photograph. It is also centrally located to many of the big shopping centers in the city.

Saint Joseph Cathedral

The Saint Joseph Cathedral is the oldest church in Hanoi, built resembling the Notre Dame de Paris. Around the church are a lot of little shops. We almost missed seeing the church because we had to go through an alley which we thought was a dead end.

Quan Su Pagoda

We then walked to the Quan Su Pagoda. You can get the best photo of the pagoda from through the entrance gate. At first we thought it was closed, but you have to walk past the main gate to enter through the side door. The temple is closed up around colorful walls and beautiful flowers.

Temple of Literature

The Temple of Literature was the first national university in Vietnam. The temple consists of five courtyards, each one designed differently. It ranges from different gardens to massive drums and bells. There is also a massive pool between the entrance and the temple.

Entrance fee:  30k dong or 15k dong with a student ID.

Ba Dinh Square

We then walked to the Ba Dinh Square. The square is the location of President Ho Chi Minh’s Proclamation of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945. It is now home to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The square is also flanked by many other massive government buildings.

One Pillar Pagoda

Next to the mausoleum is the One Pillar Pagoda, one of the most iconic temples in Vietnam. It is a gorgeous area to walk around and explore. It is perfect for a quick fruit picnic while enjoying the view.

Ho Chi Minh Museum

Behind the pagoda is the the Ho Chi Minh Museum. The museum is focused on the creation of the modern state of Vietnam and its struggles against

The museum costs 25k dong and is open daily from 8AM to 11.30AM daily and from 2PM to 4PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Truc Bach Lake

We then took a walk to the Truc Bach Lake. When we first got to the lake we saw a beautiful mural of lotus and a heart sign with the word Hanoi in it. There are also many tables with elderly playing chess.

We began to walk around the lake and stumbled upon the memorial for where former presidential candidate John McCain, was shot down during the Vietnam War.

Quan Thanh Temple

We walked towards the beautiful Quan Thanh Temple. The temple is pretty small but majestic. Diagonally in front to the temple is a beautiful park with a magnificent lotus flower statue in the middle of the fountain.

Entrance costs 10k dong per person, but we did not have enough cash at the moment, so we unfortunately could not enter.

Tran Quoc Pagoda

Our last stop was just a few blocks away; the Tran Quoc Pagoda in the West Lake. It is by far our favorite spot in Hanoi, so do not miss it! It is gorgeous temple with a large tower shrine. and it is free. Outside there are several vendors selling handmade crafts. It is the best spot to get a great panoramic view of the city.

Then while I went to the hotel my wife went to a spa near our hotel. The Natural Spa, was a neat place with excellent service and an amazing price. My wife was really happy with her experience there. She got a massage, a facial, her nails done and wax her eye browns for less than 30 USD.

Hanoi Night Market

Every Friday, Saturday and Sundays evening the old quarter of Hanoi has a 3km long street market with live music! The market is open from 7PM to approximately midnight. Along the route can buy souvenirs, food and pretty much anything you want. Just beware that some prices are higher than the stores due to the high number of tourists.

Accommodations in Hanoi, Vietnam

Hanoi legacy hotel – hang bac.

Our first nights in Hanoi we had reservations at the L’Heritage Hotel . Unfortunately when we arrived we were informed that there were no rooms available due to a leaky roof and we were transferred to one of their nearby hotels, Hanoi Legacy Hotel – Hang Bac .

The hotel was technically an upgrade from our original reservations, giving us a bigger room and a ridiculously large bed. They were a bit pushy about us signing up for a tour they offered, but after they accepted we were not doing one, it was much better. It also includes a full breakfast buffet.

Budget Friendly option: Nova Hotel

The last nights in Hanoi we spent at the nearby Nova Hotel . It was a bit cheaper than the other hotel, and it did show. The room was not much bigger than the bed itself and the TV was broken. It also includes a breakfast menu that you can order one option from. If you are only worried about a comfortable bed, this is the place to stay.

Restaurant suggestion

The front desk at our hotel recommend it to eat at  Gecko’s Restaurant , an excellent place to try traditional Vietnamese food, with the option for international cuisine. If you or your travel partners are not keen to such new flavors, or if you are traveling with children, this is a good compromise. Jazmin gives it two thumbs up!

We spent 160.000 dong for two meals and one appetizer. The next day we went back and spent 180,000 dong for 2 course meal, with drinks, including a buy one beer get one free special.

While this sounds cheap compared to the US or Europe, we suggest skipping traditional restaurants all together and heading to smaller traditional food servers along the streets.

If we are missing someplace in our travel guide that is not to be missed in Hanoi, please let us know in the comments below!
