SeaWorld San Diego Location, Parking, and Tickets

SeaWorld San Diego is in Mission Bay in the heart of San Diego. Since the park is located 15 minutes from downtown and next to the beach, it’s an easy excursion when in San Diego with kids. Even though lines move efficiently, plan extra time for the arrival process. First, SeaWorld San Diego parking is quicker when purchased in advance but can also be paid for on arrival. Second, visitors pass through a security screening. Then, those with tickets can proceed directly to the gate. If you have a voucher or gift card you’ll need to visit a kiosk to obtain a scannable ticket. Day tickets can be obtained at the ticketing counter but it’s highly recommended they be purchased online in advance .

Exciting SeaWorld San Diego Rides with Kids

There are SeaWorld San Diego rides for everyone in the family! The new Emperor roller coaster dominates the skyline and the 14-story drop is the largest in California. Manta and Electric Eel are also for thrill-seekers. The park is also full of smaller rides to delight younger guests. Abby’s Sea Star Spin, Elmo’s Flying Fish, and Octarock are family favorites. Journey to Atlantis is a mix between a roller coaster and a log ride and should definitely be on your list. For a birds-eye view of Mission Bay ride up the SkyTower or over the water on the Bayside Sky Ride . These two attractions require an additional $6 ticket but provide unbeatable views of San Diego! 

SeaWorld San Diego takes safety and height restrictions seriously so make sure children are of appropriate height before waiting in line. Upon entering the park stop by the “Height Check” display near Guest Services so you know in advance which SeaWorld San Diego rides will work best for your family. If you plan to spend a lot of time on the SeaWorld San Diego rides consider upgrading your ticket to include “ Quick Queue ,” which allows guests to skip the line and hop right on. This is a great option for rollercoaster riders who spend more time on the popular rides that tend to have long lines.

Educational Shows at SeaWorld San Diego with Kids

SeaWorld provides guests with experiences that let them explore the world we live in, be inspired by what they learn, and take action to protect the ocean and its animals. Also, make sure you reapply sunscreen or wear a hat because the shade is minimal. Each show is an interactive multimedia experience where visitors will learn unique facts about SeaWorld’s residents and what we can do to protect these incredible animals. And, you don’t want to miss the dolphins, orcas, and sea lions showing off their tricks. No doubt watching dolphins spin, seeing an orca fly through the air, or clapping with the sea lions will be a highlight of your trip to San Diego with kids.

Hands-On Experiences at SeaWorld San Diego with Kids

There are several places around the park where guests can get up close and personal with some amazing creatures. Anyone visiting SeaWorld with kids should stop at the Feeder Fish exhibit, located at the entrance. Just follow the sound of squealing and you’ll find kids with their arms dangling in the water being nibbled on by fish. Guests also have the opportunity to touch manta rays and bamboo sharks, all under the watchful eye of SeaWorld’s zoologists who share information via microphone and answer questions. For a memorable experience, purchase food for the sea otters and manta rays and you’ll receive some special attention! Hand washing stations are nearby for a quick wash before moving on to the next exhibit. 

Kid-Friendly Dining throughout the Park

SeaWorld San Diego has a variety of dining options to make it easy to feed your family during your day of fun. Scattered around the park are grab & go stands for a quick hot dog, bag of popcorn, or beverage. There are also specialty venues for ice cream and adult beverages. Sit-down restaurants are available in different areas of the park, which allows families to take a rest while enjoying a meal together. Families with big appetites should take advantage of the All Day Dining upgrade ($49.99 adult/$24.99 child). This allows guests to eat something from select locations once every hour. You’ll find plenty of food and snacks to keep you fueled!

Animal Encounters & Interactions at Seaworld San Diego with Kids

One of the most unique experiences for kids at SeaWorld San Diego is the opportunity to interact with animals up close through an animal encounter or interaction. Guests will meet with keepers and possibly participate in feedings, visit habitats and get some great photos! Encounters are available for the following animals: dolphin, beluga, sea lion, sloth, penguin, walrus, and flamingos . Preparing to Visit

• What to Wear – SeaWorld San Diego is located near the ocean so the weather, while generally mild, can fluctuate. Mornings can be cooler with fog that burns off and turns to sunny afternoons. So, pack layers for all-day comfort. There are a few SeaWorld San Diego rides that involve water, which can be refreshing on hot days. However, if you desire to sit in the “splash zone” at a dolphin show and enjoy water rides while staying completely dry, then throw in a lightweight slicker. Also, packs hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.  While there are a few indoor exhibits, most of the day you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful California sunshine so it’s best to be prepared. Lastly, tennis shoes or sturdy walking shoes are advised. There is so much to see and experience that you’ll be getting in a lot of steps! 
• Pack Water Bottles – While outside snacks are not permitted, we do recommend that families bring a reusable water bottle (or two!) for use during the day.
• Travel with Baby – If you are traveling with a baby, make life easier and check BabyQuip for local stroller and car seat rentals .

On-Site Tips

• SeaWorld App – Download the SeaWorld app before arriving. It will be your map and guide to dining, rides, and showtimes. Pack a cell charger or power brick if you plan to use your phone for navigation and photos. 
• Lockers – Backpacks are not allowed on the roller coasters, so guests should utilize the nearby lockers ($3/2hrs) to store valuables before getting in line. This is mandatory so save yourself time and head straight for the lockers before attempting to get in line. Plus, the photos of broken cell phones will remind you it’s a good idea to store your items instead of purchasing new ones! 
• Special events – Check the app or SeaWorld San Diego website for special events such as fireworks, character meet & greets, and food festivals.
• Timing – To maximize your day plan to arrive before the park opens to allow time for parking, security, and ticket scanning. First, check the height of each of your children at the sign near Guest Services if you plan to enjoy any SeaWorld San Diego rides. Then, get your twists, turns, and thrills in before the crowds and hot sun arrive. Next, work your way around the exhibits while keeping an eye on the Dolphin, Orca, and Sea Lion showtimes. Finally, end the day popping into the smaller aquariums while enjoying an ice cream or sweet treat!  

Best Places to Stay Near SeaWorld San Diego with Kids

Given SeaWorld San Diego’s incredible location, you don’t have to travel far to find a great place to stay with kids in San Diego. In fact, there are four amazing waterfront resorts less than five minutes from SeaWorld. First, Mission Bay Resort has renovated rooms and suites where you can relax before having a bonfire on the beach. Second, you’ll feel like you’re on vacation when you arrive on Paradise Point Resort & Spa’s 44-acre island. With five pools, a mile of sandy beach, and a marina, it’s the perfect place to rejuvenate after a full day at SeaWorld San Diego with kids! 

Next, kids will have a blast flying down waterslides at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina . The property also has direct access to whale watching tours and other water sports. Finally, at Bahia Resort Hotel guests can watch SeaWorld San Diego’s firework display from the hotel! Kids in San Diego will also enjoy visiting rescued seals who now live on the property. And, for families who want to cruise out on the bay, Bahia Resort Hotel offers a 45-minute sightseeing cruise directly from the hotel.

SeaWorld San Diego Hours

SeaWorld San Diego hours of operation largely depend on when you decide to visit. For example, the park tends to close later during the summer months, as well as on the weekends. It might also close early if there happens to be a special, separately ticketed event going on, like Howl-O-Scream during spooky season .

The one thing that is usually consistent, however, is the opening time. In general, SeaWorld San Diego typically opens at 10 AM, while closing time can range anywhere from 5 PM to 10 PM. For everyone else, the San Diego parking fee is $30 per vehicle for general parking. If desired and available, visitors can also choose to pay extra for a closer parking spot. Up-Close Parking starts at $50 per vehicle and is located in the six rows closest to the park entrance, while VIP Parking starts at $70 and includes an up-close spot and unlimited in-and-out privileges all day long.

San Diego SeaWorld has a few options available for those who are only planning to visit the park one or two days at a time, as well as for those who are hoping to check out SeaWorld along with other San Diego parks around the same time. As long as you’re only planning for one day at SeaWorld San Diego, cheap tickets can be had by purchasing the date-specific option. Since these utilize dynamic ticket prices that decrease during slow periods and increase over the busy season, it is possible to save a bit if you have some wiggle room with your visit dates.

Contrastingly, while an Any Day Ticket will cost more, it does give you more flexibility with your visit at one flat rate. No matter which San Diego SeaWorld ticket option you choose, you can also opt to upgrade your day with the All-Day Dining deal (we’ll dig into that more in a bit). Multi-Park SeaWorld Tickets San Diego

SeaWorld might be one of the most famous parks in San Diego, but it certainly isn’t the only one. Along with SeaWorld San Diego, folks looking for some family-friendly fun can also check out SeaWorld’s sister park, Sesame Place , or the city’s two other awesome animal attractions, the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Fortunately, thanks to SeaWorld San Diego’s multi-park ticket options, you don’t have to pick just one.

Prices for multi-park adult tickets purchased through SeaWorld San Diego (not including taxes or fees) are:

• 2-Park Ticket (SeaWorld and Sesame Place) – $129.99
• San Diego 3-For-1 Ticket (San Diego Zoo Safari Park, San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld) – $190.00

San Diego SeaWorld Annual Passes & Fun Card

Are you a huge San Diego SeaWorld fan? If you live in or travel often to Southern California and are planning to visit SeaWorld more than once a year, then a SeaWorld Fun Card or annual pass might be for you. So, what’s the difference between the two? Well, think of a SeaWorld San Diego Fun Card as an annual pass without all the extra stuff.

In general, a Fun Card lets you visit as many times as you want (except for on blockout dates). A SeaWorld annual pass, meanwhile, also comes with unlimited admission. Unlike the Fun Card, however, there are no blockout dates. Plus, depending on which annual pass option you choose, you’ll also enjoy an array of benefits, like complimentary parking, free guest tickets and discounts on things like dining, merchandise, animal interactions and more. San Diego SeaWorld Discount Tickets

San Diego SeaWorld tickets don’t always come cheap, especially if you happen to be traveling during a popular time or as a family with kids . On the bright side, as long as you know where to look, there’s no need to pay full price for SeaWorld admission. That’s where we come in!

SeaWorld Quick Queue & Reserved Seating

Just like the Lightning Lanes at Disneyland or the Express Pass at Universal Studios Hollywood , Quick Queue lets you spend less time in line and more time having fun by giving you priority boarding on select SeaWorld San Diego rides. There is also an option to upgrade to Reserved Seating, which, as the name implies, entitles you to saved seats during SeaWorld San Diego shows at certain park venues.

Several different options are available, depending on what your priorities are and how much room you have in your travel budget. For example, Quick Queue and Reserved Seating can both be purchased individually, starting at $19.99 and $9.99 per person, respectively. Alternatively, you can also enjoy both perks with Quick Queue Premier, which starts at $29.99 per person per visit or costs $299.99 for the year.

Quick Queue attractions include:

• Arctic Rescue (single-use express entry not available with all SeaWorld San Diego Quick Queue options)

San Diego SeaWorld All-Day Dining

As anyone who has ever hung out at a theme park all day can attest, waiting in line under the hot SoCal sun can really work up an appetite. So, if you have a big appetite or are the kind of person who gets hangry easily and needs to snack throughout the day, you might want to splurge on the SeaWorld All-Day Dining Deal.

As you can probably guess from the name, the All-Day Dining Deal at SeaWorld San Diego basically lets you eat as much as you want. The only restrictions are that you have to wait 90 minutes in between visits, and the deal is only valid at select SeaWorld restaurants. For each visit, you’re entitled to one entrée and one beverage (soda or iced tea only; bottled water or alcoholic beverages aren’t included), as well as either a side or a dessert .

Considering how much theme park dining typically costs, we think that’s a steal—as long as you intend on eating multiple times during your visit, anyway. When purchased through the SeaWorld San Diego website, All-Day Dining costs $49.99 for adults and $24.99 for kids ages 3 to 9. To determine if All-Day Dining at SeaWorld San Diego is right for you and your group, we suggest you take a look at the restaurant menus and prices in the app ahead of time to estimate your potential food costs throughout the day.

SeaWorld San Diego Rides, Shows & Animal Experiences

When we call SeaWorld San Diego an animal-inspired theme park, we mean it! Sure, there are plenty of attractions (tons of them, actually!) that give you excellent views of all sorts of sea creatures. However, there are also almost as many rides that take inspiration from Mother Nature and the incredible wildlife that call our planet home. In short, there truly is something at SeaWorld San Diego for everyone, no matter if you’re a group of adults looking for an adrenaline rush or an animal-loving family with small children.

SeaWorld San Diego Rides

Contrary to what you might think, SeaWorld San Diego is more than just animals—although that is, admittedly, a large chunk of it. Believe it or not, you can also have a whale of a time enjoying a huge variety of awesome SeaWorld San Diego rides, many of which are inspired by the animals that live there. From thrilling roller coasters to kid-friendly attractions similar to what you might find in an amusement park, this ocean-inspired theme park has it all.

Attention, adrenaline junkies! If you’re looking for a thrill ride to get your blood pumping, there’s a good chance you’ll find it at SeaWorld San Diego. In fact, this wild theme park is actually home to some of the most intense attractions on the West Coast, including the all-new Arctic Rescue roller coaster.

• Arctic Rescue – At least 48”; a record-breaking straddle coaster (the fastest and longest on the West Coast, with a max speed of 40 miles per hour and 2,800 feet of track) inspired by the SeaWorld Rescue Team with three high-speed launches and ride vehicles that look like snowmobiles

1. Know What the Calmest Days to Visit Are

The best days to visit SeaWorld San Diego are Monday - Wednesday.

In simple terms, most vacationers plan their trip around the weekend and arrive on Thursday and leave by Monday.

By going during the week, you'll most likely avoid heavy crowds, and waiting in line.

2. Skip the Lines with Quick Queue

Do you hate waiting in lines? You're not the only one.

If you can only visit the park on one day, and that happens to be on a weekend, a Quick Queue Unlimited  pass is something that you should consider.

Quick Queue gives you access to single-day unlimited front-of-the-line access at certain rides, including Manta®, Electric Eel, and Shipwreck Rapids®.

They are an additional cost, but after walking right to the front of the line once (rather than waiting hours), you'll realize the immense value it has.

3. Work From the Back of the Park

If you're able to arrive right when the park opens , a great strategy is to work backwards through the park, specifically from the left side.

What most visitors do when they enter the park, is they start from the front and make their way deeper into the park throughout the day.

What this strategy will allow you to do is experience rides located at the left-end of the park such as Manta and Shipwreck rapids with minimal waits, if any.

These same rides, especially the new rides , become extremely busy later on in the day as the crowd pours in.

4. Bring a Poncho

Inexpensive ponchos can be purchased online, and they will come in super handy during your visit.

There are rides where you will get wet such as Journey to Atlantis and Shipwrecked rapids, but if you don't want to bring a change of clothes for whatever reason, quickly put on a poncho!

A poncho is much easier to carry and is extremely lightweight.

Another time it can be useful is if you decide to sit in the first dozen rows at Shamu stadium, as these happen to be the Splash zone.

If you do decide to not bring an extra pair of clothes, consider bringing an extra pair of socks (seriously).

While a poncho can prevent your head and torso from getting wet, nobody thinks about having to walk in wet socks for an entire day.

5. Have a Plan for the Hottest Time of the Day

During the hottest time of the day cooling off will be your main priority, and by saving the water rides for this time, you can seamlessly do this without having to deviate from your favorite rides.

Penguin Encounter is another great alternative as over 400 penguins live in this area, and it'll be significantly cooler than outside.

6. Bring a Water Bottle

Although you are not able to bring outside beverages, coolers or food into the park, you're able to bring your own water bottle or refillable water bottle.

This will save you a few bucks throughout the day, as it is bound to get hot after hours of walking.

7. Rent a Locker

Lockers are available at SeaWorld San Diego near guest services. There are hourly lockers, where you pay by the hour and there are also all day lockers where you pay a one time fee. You can pay with a credit card or cash.

8. Arrive to the Shows Early

Every show has a scheduled time for the day of when they will perform. You'll want to ensure that you arrive 20-30 minutes before showtime in order to ensure a good seat.

These shows can fill up quickly as they only perform a few times every day, and visitors don't want to miss it.

Although you can grab a physical map at the front of the park, you can also have one in your phone through the SeaWorld app .

Show times actually mean that the surrounding area will be packed near showtime, and once the show ends.

SeaWorld San Diego is a theme park in Mission Bay Park, San Diego.

It is 15 minutes northwest of downtown San Diego and San Diego International Airport (SAN).

You can reach the theme park by car or public transport.

San Diego Santa Fe depot is the most important transportation center in Downtown San Diego.

You can board the Pacific Surfliner train or the Coaster from San Diego Santa Fe to get to  Old Town Center , the closest transit stop to SeaWorld San Diego. 

You can board Bus No 8 or 9 to get to San Diego SeaWorld from just outside the bus stop ( SeaWorld ) 

SeaWorld is approximately 4-minutes walk from the theme park.

Turn on Google Maps and get started to reach the park.

SeaWorld San Diego has enough parking slots and offers three-car parking packages. 

General Parking costs US$32, and Up-Close Parking, where you can park your car in the first six rows near the park entrance, costs US$53.

For US$74, you can enjoy a reserved parking spot in the closest parking section near the park entrance.

You can decide which slot you prefer on the day of your visit. 

Parking for RVs and campers is US$40, and parking for motorcycles is US$20.

There are numerous parking garages around the theme park.

SeaWorld San Diego opens at 10 am every day of the year. 

From Monday to Thursday it closes at 7 pm and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday it remains open till 9 pm. 

The closing hours change; please check your ticket details before booking.

Most families spend six to seven hours at SeaWorld San Diego. Staying longer helps you see the shows, animal exhibits, encounters, and rides.

The best time to visit SeaWorld San Diego is when they open at 10 am. 

Early in the day, the animals are fresh and active, and the crowd is yet to come in, resulting in shorter queues. 

If you purchase your tickets in advance, you don’t need to stand at the ticket counter and can start visiting the animals as soon as you arrive. 

The summer months and school holidays are the busiest at the San Diego attraction. 

However, during the crowded days, SeaWorld has extra shows and stays open longer.

SeaWorld San Diego is home to about 13,000 animals, including mammals, fishes, birds, and reptiles.

You can explore these animals through interactive animal exhibits, animal attractions, and animal encounters.

Interactive animal exhibits 

There are three animal exhibits where you can touch the marine life forms. 

The regular Seaworld San Diego tickets get you access to all interactive exhibits.

Explorer’s Reef is just inside the park entrance and is the first opportunity to interact with sea life.

It is a series of touch pools where you can see and touch several reef shark species, horseshoe crabs, stingrays, etc.

Feel free to ask for insights from the Animal Care Ambassadors nearby. 

Kids can interact with touch-friendly bat rays at Bat Ray Shallows.

Visitors can also go downstairs (beneath the touch pool) for an underground aquarium with white sturgeons and shovelnose guitarfish.

At the Sea Lion Point of SeaWorld, kids and adults can feed and enjoy the antics of seals and sea lions. 

These animals are always active, so expect a crowd. 

Like the interactive animal displays, access to the animal attractions is also included with the regular SeaWorld ticket . 

Attractions are animal exhibits that visitors can see and enjoy, but they can’t interact with them. 

The most popular animal attractions are – Dolphin Point, Orca Underwater, 

Bat Rays, Flamingos, Sea Lion Point, Otter Outlook, Moray Eels, Magellanic Penguins, Macaws, Sea Turtles, Sloths, Sting Rays, Tide Pools, etc. 

Animal Encounters

SeaWorld San Diego has four animal encounters – with Dolphins, Sloths, Flamingoes, and Sea Otters.

All encounters are paid activities; all participants under 18 need a paying parent or guardian present. 

This 15-minute tour is an exclusive trainer-guided, poolside opportunity to meet, feed, and learn to communicate with Bottlenose Dolphins. Image: Seaworld.com

For this encounter at Dolphin Point, a paid parent or guardian must accompany participants under 122 cm (48 inches) tall.

For a group of up to six members, the encounter costs US$79, and you must reserve in advance. 

During the Sloth Encounter, you go behind the scenes at Dolphin Amphitheater for an up-close experience with a two-toed sloth.

A #Slothie (Sloth selfie) is one of the highlights of the 15-20 minute session.

Participants must be at least six years old (and accompanied by a paid adult participant) if they are below 18.

The Sloth Encounter costs US$89 for one person, and reservation is a must.

Flamingo Encounter is a 20-minute session inside the Flamingo’s habitat, where an Aviculturist shares unique facts about the birds.

It costs US$24 for one person, and reservation in advance is mandatory. 

The Sea Otter Encounter is a 30-minute session where you will feed the Sea Otter and learn about the fascinating animal. 

This session with the curious and playful sea otters happens at the ‘Otter Outlook’, you must reserve it in advance. 

SeaWorld San Diego shows

Five shows at SeaWorld San Diego Sea Lions Live, Dolphin Days, Orca Encounter, Magellanic Penguin, and Sesame Street Meet‑and‑Greets are free for all ticketholders. 

The sixth show, Rescue Tails, is paid. 

Tip: Ask for the day’s show schedule and times at the attraction’s entrance. It will come in handy to plan your day’s itinerary. 

The Sea Lions Live is a free show at the Sea Lion Amphitheater. 

Visitors join Sea Lions Clyde, Seamore, and their buddy O.P. Otter for some splashy action.

This San Diego SeaWorld show is funny and educational and a favorite among most families. 

During this show, visitors see the SeaWorld aquarium’s family of Bottlenose Dolphins and their incredible athleticism.

This free show happens at the Dolphin Amphitheatre. 

If you sit close to the Dolphins, be ready for some splashing.

This show is a fantastic opportunity to meet Orca, the ocean’s most powerful predator.

Spectators learn about orcas’ masterful hunting techniques and complex communication codes. 

This free show at the Orca Encounter venue can get very splashy. 

The Sesame Street Meet and Greet at SeaWorld San Diego is highly popular with younger kids.

During this free activity, kids and adults meet their favorite Sesame Street characters, such as Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Zoe, Rosita, Telly, Bert, and Ernie. 

Visitors get to see the keepers feed the penguins during this free show at the outdoor Magellanic penguin exhibit.

The keepers also tell stories and answer questions about the penguins. 

Ask for the park schedule to know the feeding times.

Visitors learn about SeaWorld’s commitment to animal care and rescue at the Rescue Tails show at Nautilus Amphitheater. 

Visitors meet many of the park’s rescued animals, such as birds of prey, primates, and reptiles, and learn about their unique stories.

Besides meeting the animals, you also get to take photos of the fantastic animals. 

Entry to this show is paid and costs $14.99 per person. 

Visitors who prefer front-row action at the SeaWorld San Diego shows can reserve seats.

Unlimited single-day reserved seating at all participating shows costs US$30 per person. 

Reserved seating upgrades guarantee front-row action at Orca Encounter, Dolphin Amphitheater, and Sea Lion & Otter Amphitheater.

It won’t be valid at Cirque Electrique, Nautilus Amphitheater, or Mission Bay Theater shows. 

Seating is reserved only until the show starts, after which unused seats are opened for general seating.

Most visitors check out the animals, attend shows, and then head out to SeaWorld San Diego’s rides for their adrenalin rush. 

SeaWorld has five high thrill rides, four of which are roller coasters.

Here is a recap of some of the more memorable moments and milestones in SeaWorld’s 60-year history.

1961 : The San Diego City Council approves a 50-year lease with Marine Park Corp., headed by George Millay, for the 22-acre “Marine Park.” He had originally planned an underwater bar at his Reef Restaurant in Long Beach.

1964 : Built for $3.5 million, SeaWorld opens March 21. Adult admission at the time: $2.25, annual pass, $4.25. First year attendance: 200,000. Favorite show: Theater of the Sea, starring “sea maids,” two dolphins and one seal.

1965 : A killer whale, which would become the first Shamu at SeaWorld, was captured in Puget Sound early in the year and was later acquired by the San Diego park that same year.

1969 : PSA Skytower opens.

1973 : SeaWorld Orlando opens.

1983 : Penguin Encounter opens.

1988 : First successful killer whale birth (Orkid, born Sept. 23); SeaWorld San Antonio opens.

1989 : Anheuser-Busch buys four SeaWorlds and two other theme parks for $1.1 billion. The company was acquired by Belgian brewer InBev in 2008 for $52 billion, including Busch Entertainment Corp.’s 10 theme parks.

2016: SeaWorld ownership announces that it will end the captive breeding of orcas and also phase out the theatrical Shamu shows.

2017: The San Diego park debuts Orca Encounter, the successor to the long-running Shamu shows, which showcases the natural behaviors of killer whales in the wild.

2018: Electric Eel, SeaWorld San Diego’s fastest and tallest coaster yet, debuts. It’s the first new thrill ride in six years.

2020: The COVID-19 pandemic arrives, forcing the shutdown in March of all theme parks, including SeaWorld. The park partially reopened in August but on a very limited basis with strict capacity restrictions.

2023: The city of San Diego sues SeaWorld for rent payments that went unpaid during the height of the pandemic. The city is seeking $12.2 million, which is a combination of back rent and fees and interest charges; Arctic Rescue opens.

Business | Will SeaWorld San Diego ever get back to peak attendance of 10 years ago?

SeaWorld, which has experienced a lot of ups and downs over the years, is in the midst of celebrating its 60th anniversary at its San Diego location.

The park hit a peak attendance of nearly 4.6 million in 2013, but it’s never come close to reaching that level again.

Last year, the number of park visitors totaled 3.4 million following a gradual rebound from the pandemic, although still falling short of the nearly 3.5 million who came to the park the year before COVID-19 hit.

The park’s Orlando-based parent company lost considerable ground after the 2013 release of the anti-captivity film “Blackfish,” which helped fuel falling attendance in San Diego. Like other amusement parks, it had a large drop in attendance during the pandemic and was shut down several times to stop the spread of the virus.

To turn the tide, SeaWorld has been adding thrill rides at a fast pace — four coasters at the San Diego location in the past five years.

Q: Will SeaWorld ever get back to its peak attendance of more than a decade ago?

NO: SeaWorld attendance fell 8 percent when COVID-19 hit in 2020 and is down another 5 percent since then. In part this could be due to public attitudes about animal captivity. But we see the same thing in other theme parks. Attendance at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 was 14 percent lower than in 2019, and Six Flags is down 23 percent. The pandemic changed our behavior in many long-lasting ways. Crowds are less fun than they used to be.

YES: Extrapolating the slow upward trend, SeaWorld will eventually surpass old attendance records. Despite the bad press from the movie “Blackfish,” SeaWorld does an incredible job saving so many sea lions and other marine creatures from our coast, impacted by pollution, careless boaters and fishing lines, that they deserve our support. Perhaps they simply need a better storyteller to expound on the positive side of what they do beyond simply entertaining us with new thrill rides?

NO: The release of the film “Blackfish” is likely to continue to restrain attendance growth. The lack of growth in the child population of California will be another factor holding back attendance at theme parks. Entertainment options have expanded in the region since 2013, including the Wave FC, the future San Diego FC, San Diego Gulls, San Diego Legion and the G League Clippers. Some residents and visitors will opt to attend sporting events rather than visit a theme park.

NO: SeaWorld has been an amazing asset to the San Diego region for the last six decades. Much of the success of our tourism industry in the early years can be directly credited to SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo. However, evolving social views on the treatment of animals have diminished SeaWorld’s appeal. The pivot from an aquarium/animal-themed park to an amusement park draws a completely different crowd.

NO: Young folks care more about treating marine animals humanely than seeing things in real life than previous generations. Why visit SeaWorld when you can interact virtually with marine life for free, from the comfort of home, without anything getting hurt? Unless SeaWorld reduces the entrance fee substantially, attendance is more likely to stagnate or decline.

While inflation partially contributes to record revenue numbers, the park’s new attractions are successfully generating more interest. Theme parks necessarily require constant adjustment and reinvention of themselves to attract new and returning visitors. Community goodwill created by SeaWorld efforts to humanely house animals, as well as efforts to rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife, helps restore positive perceptions while negative “Blackfish” impressions further fade.

While there is a significant market for that, there is less opportunity for repeat visits that drive attendance at parks such as Disneyland.

YES: With some additional work, it could happen. Adding more family-friendly rides and attractions should draw attendance from both residents and tourists. The presentations, like the Sea Lion and Otter Spotlight, are also entertaining. It will take continued capital expenditures and strategic marketing efforts to help regain lost market share and to reshape public opinion. From personal experience, management needs to focus more attention on customer relations to help attract and retain yearly membership holders.

NO : Not unless they upgrade their offerings and infrastructure. There is now a lot more completion from many other attractions in San Diego County that were not around 10 years ago. SeaWorld feels and looks tired and neglected. If it wants to become an amusement park, then it needs to focus on that area and be the best one around.

NO: The killer whale problem is a residual negative for them. Many families haven’t returned. And the conversion to roller coaster park is probably insufficient to recapture lost patronage because most people value SeaWorld for the fish, not the thrill. It’s also quite expensive. Nevertheless, it remains a vital tourist destination and has a laudable sea life rescue program. It is likely to stabilize at these numbers for the foreseeable future.

YES: SeaWorld will enjoy a resurgence for its 60th anniversary year along with the return of tourism industry success in San Diego. The combination of thrill rides, animal education and a great location make SeaWorld a must-see attraction. San Diego already has excellent attractions, such as arts, sports, climate (yes, this winter aside, it is an attraction), food and beverage, and more. SeaWorld will thrive and did not deserve the negative publicity it received after “Blackfish.”

YES : Businesses do need to change with the times and SeaWorld certainly is trying to do so. While their master plan still calls for most of SeaWorld’s attractions to include significant animal conservation and/or education elements, they are weaving that in while continuing to add rides and attractions. Since San Diego does not have any large-scale amusement parks, expanding in this manner may be a viable way for SeaWorld to rebuild attendance volume.

Business | SeaWorld at 60: It survived ‘Blackfish’ and COVID. Where San Diego’s biggest theme park is headed now.

When SeaWorld San Diego marked its half-century anniversary 10 years ago, it was enmeshed in a public relations quagmire following the release just a year earlier of “Blackfish,” the searing anti-captivity documentary that threatened to upend the theme park’s identity as the home of Shamu the beloved killer whale.

While the San Diego park has yet to exceed — or even reach — its peak annual attendance milestone of 11 years ago, it ultimately weathered a yearslong “Blackfish” backlash from both the public and animal rights activists and retained its appeal as a marine theme park while doubling down on thrill rides. In just a five-year span, SeaWorld added four roller coasters, although one — Tidal Twister — was plagued by multiple operational problems and was shuttered for good in 2023, five years after it had opened.

SeaWorld also survived a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic that shut down the park for months and kept it from returning to full capacity for more than a year.

The iconic Shamu show is now gone, although it lives on, sort of, in what’s now called Orca Encounter. The park no longer breeds killer whales but still has a healthy population of eight orcas. And its trainers stopped riding astride dolphins four years ago in the shows featuring the acrobatic marine mammals.

Is it an amusement park or a marine park?

As much as SeaWorld continues to showcase its animal population and the rescue work it conducts year-round, the park opened two coaster rides in just the last two years, the most recent being Arctic Rescue, which debuted in 2023.

There was a time not all that long ago when some pundits wondered whether SeaWorld was planning to transition to a more traditional theme park model as it fought back against unceasing news stories about the marine park’s treatment of killer whales in the wake of the “Blackfish” film. The documentary focused on Tilikum, a 12,000-pound killer whale that fatally attacked a SeaWorld Orlando trainer in 2010.

“This park was lacking on rides so we started adding rides,” said Byron Surrett, chief parks operation officer. “We survey our guests and we ask what they’re missing and they told us pretty loud and clear you need more rides when comparing us to other parks in California. We listened to that and responded. So we have had several teen to adult rides as well as some of the kids rides in our Rescue Jr. area.

Embracing jellyfish

This year, in a departure from its string of spine-tingling coasters, SeaWorld is debuting in late spring a new exhibit that reinforces the park’s roots as a sea life-focused attraction.

“Jewels of the Sea: The Jellyfish Experience,” which will be housed in the park’s former Clydesdale barn near Journey to Atlantis, will be a first for any of the SeaWorld parks. The new exhibit area will give visitors a close-up look at the tentacled invertebrates in a three-room gallery that will include an 18-foot-tall cylindrical acrylic aquarium. The new exhibit will reinforce SeaWorld’s educational mission, which is incorporated into SeaWorld’s master plan and requires that at least 75 percent of the park’s total attractions include “significant” educational and/or animal conservation-related elements.

A new entrance and souvenirs

SeaWorld also will be revealing this month its brand-new entrance, which, in addition to featuring a new look, will eventually have self-service kiosks and biometric-equipped turnstiles that will allow pass holders to enter the park via facial recognition. The technology upgrade is expected to come on line later this year

To mark the occasion of its 60th year in business, the San Diego park has a number of things planned, including limited-edition food and beverage items, like the return of the Shamu cookie and a special 60th Anniversary IPA from San Diego’s Mike Hess Brewing. There’s also “vintage merchandise,” such as reusable water bottles, plush animals, and backpacks, plus a collectible figurine featuring a boy and a girl looking down at a dolphin, orca and sea lion.

Come summertime, there will be two new entertainment options: a 60th anniversary parade and a revival of the live performance character show, “Shamu and Crew,” which was last at the park a decade ago.

A mega aquarium

SeaWorld, to a degree, remains a giant aquarium, with its touch pools, marine mammal underwater viewing areas and animal shows that the park now characterizes as educational presentations. And the park’s parent company continues to remind the public of its longstanding animal rescue work. In all, the SeaWorld parks have participated in more than 40,000 rescues.

“I grew up in the company and went through that whole period (following the release of ‘Blackfish),’” Surrett said. “I never heard within the company — nor did I ever think it would happen — that we’d become a rides-only park. We’ve had the conservation theme since 1964, and we are still that same company. That’s why our rides are themed after animals, and we try to partner with other industries out there that are either protecting or saving animals.

“I can’t talk about upcoming attractions, but I will tell you that we continue to have animal habitats in our plans.”

Moving beyond its original vision

With its collection today of 12,000 animals, more than a dozen rides and an off-site water park in Chula Vista, SeaWorld San Diego has come a long way from when it was a kernel of an idea to create a park full of sea life that would rival Marineland in Palos Verdes, which closed nearly 40 years ago. It too was known for its performing killer whales.

George Millay, a former stockbroker and successful restaurateur, was looking for a new challenge and found just that after talking to a customer, Kenny Norris, curator of fish and mammals at Marineland. Why not build a rival park in Mission Bay, Norris suggested.

And so they did. The two men, joined by two of their UCLA fraternity brothers, opened the park on March 21, 1964.

Some of Millay’s grand ideas have survived to this day — the Skytower ride and a killer whale show. Others, like the pearl diver shows and hydrofoil boat rides, did not.

Eventually, the San Diego park would successfully spawn two more marine parks in the U.S. — in Orlando and San Antonio — which opened in 1973 and 1988, respectively, and are under the umbrella of parent company United Parks and Resorts. More recently, the Orlando-based company opened a SeaWorld park in Abu Dhabi under a license agreement with the Abu Dhabi-based company Miral Asset Management, which is the park owner and operator.

Still facing challenges

SeaWorld has long been one of San Diego’s biggest tourist attractions and an important driver of visitation to San Diego, but in recent years, the relationship between the city and the theme park has frayed. After multiple failed efforts by the city to collect back rent that went unpaid by SeaWorld during the height of the pandemic, the San Diego city attorney filed suit in September of last year, demanding payment of more than $12.2 million in outstanding rent and fees.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for next April .

Even as SeaWorld’s ownership ventures into overseas parks and is in the midst of developing plans for its own branded hotels, it is still struggling, as are other theme parks, to build attendance back to pre-pandemic levels. Some analysts are predicting that the industry as a whole may not see a full recovery until possibly 2025. SeaWorld San Diego, though, has a ways to goes before it approaches the peak visitation it reached more than a decade ago.

Surrett says he has faith that SeaWorld can continue to grow its attendance in San Diego but acknowledges the challenges of wooing visitors at a time when people are still cautious about their discretionary spending.

“I don’t think money is as easy to come by as it was prior to COVID,” he said. “I see it out there everywhere. As we continue to add compelling rides and products like the jellyfish habitat, people will continue to come back.

“The economy has to change at some point and when people have more money in their pockets for discretionary spending, they’ll want to come back to theme parks more.”
