The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected game reserve on the African continent covering an area of 54,600 square kilometers comprised of a vast wilderness with forests, grassy plains, mountains and open woodlands. This reserve was named after Frederick Selous Courtney who was a great Hunter and explorer. Selous Safari Holidays are highly recommended as in size this reserve is twice the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and three times Kruger National Park in South Africa. This reserve was established in 1922, and in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its rich diversity of wildlife and uninterrupted nature. The Tanzanian national park authority (TANAPA) in 2019 proposed and declared a change of identity of the northern sector of this reserve such that it is known as The Nyerere National Park as a way of honoring President Julius Nyerere who was the first president of Tanzania. Today the boundaries of this Nyerere National Park are being properly established but according to sources it is believed that this park will encompass the photographic sector in the northern part of the reserve and stretch out all the way to the wilderness area of River Rufiji to the south. See how much a Tanzania safari costs .

Where is Selous Game Reserve Located?

The reserve is located in the southern part of Tanzania along the southern Tanzania safari circuit and offers the best escape from the large tourist crowds in the northern safari destinations like Serengeti while offering you a remarkable wildlife experience. It is considered to be among the hidden gems in the county and offers a wide range of Selous Game Reserve Camps for accommodation. The reserve is located about 219 kilometers from the busy city of Dar es salaam and may take about 4 hours drive. Selous Game Reserve has a new name, Nyerere National Park Tanzania .

Regions of Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve is crossed by River Rufiji (which is the largest river in the country) in the center and forms a network of swamps, channels and lakes to create a very unique ecological system. The reserve is separated into 2 major sections by the river which are the northern and southern Selous. The Northern Selous: this region covers just about 5% of the total area of the reserve and hunting is completely prohibited in this area which has been exclusively set aside for photographic safaris. See, the best time to visit . The southern Selous : the southern part of the river is separated into various hunting blocks each covering an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers however we emphasize that we do not operate or even support wildlife hunting.

There are a number of wildlife   mammals found within this national reserve among which are: approximately 145,000 buffalos, 4,000 Lions, 100,000 wildebeests, large hands of giraffes, 35000 zebras, 40000 hippos, 250,000 impalas, large numbers of Lichtenstein’s hartebeests, waterbucks, elands and bushbucks, in addition to leopards, crocodiles and hyenas. Furthermore this is among the few wildlife sanctuaries on the African continent where you will find the puku antelopes the African wild dogs as well as the sable antelope. Previously the Selous was home to a very large number of elephants but because of excessive poaching these numbers have greatly reduced and all these can be seen during the game drives on the Selous Safari Holidays .

The reserve has northern and southern parts.

  • Northern Selous : This area covers around 5% of the reserve’s total area. It’s dedicated to photographic safaris.

Activities and Safari Tours in Selous Game Reserve

As one of Africa’s largest protected areas , the Selous Game Reserve is one of the few large reserves in the world to allow your pick of walking, fly-camping, and boating safaris. This reserve offers trips by boat , vehicle , and on foot .

The Selous is teeming with wildlife. With over 2000 species of flora, 440 bird species, and a wide range of animal species. It’s also home to one of the largest concentration of elephants on the continent. As well as the largest population of buffalo in Africa.

Its game population is thriving and includes brindled gnu , sable antelope , Nyasaland gnu ,  eland , and lots more. Here’s how you can see them all.

Boat cruises

Tourists approach a herd of elephants on a boat safari, Selous

The permanent waterways and channels spread like veins throughout the reserve. There are river safari cruises all year round in the Selous, setting it apart from any other reserve or park in Tanzania .

On the reserve, there are hot volcanic springs, channels, and sporadic lakes from the nearby rivers. The Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers add an incredible setting of abundant wildlife near the edges of the water.

The Rufiji River attracts large herds of elephants . This river flows through the reserve and provides one of the most popular safari boat trips.

Get up close to crocodiles and hippopotamuses in their natural habitat on a superb boating experience.

Game drive safaris

Breakfast pause on a morning safari game drive, Selous

Morning 4×4 safari game drives provide a spectacular sighting of animals. As the early mists lift, wildlife begins to forage and hunt. Spot wild dogs , lions , endangered black rhino , and lots more on these drives.

Nighttime safaris are also possible. Discover glowing eyes and moving vegetation as hints of animals hiding in the dark from their predators.

Walking safaris

Mom yellow baboon carrying her baby on her back

Taking a safari in one of the most remote reserves in Africa is as close to nature as it gets. A walking safari provides the ultimate bush experience accompanied by expert trackers and guides. This is something not offered or possible in northern Tanzania’s game reserves and national parks.

All lodges in the reserve provide guided walks with professional guides.

Note: In most lodges, children need to be over the ages of 12 years to join a walking safari. At Lake Manze River Camp and Impala River Camp, children need to be over the ages of 6 years old to stay at one of these campsites. And over the ages of 16 years to join a walking safari.

For guests seeking a unique opportunity, some of the lodges and camps offer overnight fly camping .

Experience a safari walk or drive to the sleepout point and then sleep under the African stars .

Your shelter might be a mosquito net strung up or an actual tent with a bucket shower. Park rangers and a chef will accompany you to make for a dreamy stay.

Maasai community visits

Maasai warrior in the Selous Game Reserve

While Selous provides a range of wildlife to see, the region’s human residents provide another kind of experience. Explore local Maasai villages dotted at the outer edges of the reserve, with an expert guide.

These trips allow you to take a unique look into the Maasai’s unique tribal way of life and culture.

Best Time of Year to Visit Selous, Tanzania

Selous Game Reserve is a dry season park. This means the safaris progressively get better later in the season. So the best time to visit the Selous Game Reserve is from June to October .

During the dry season, wildlife is easier to spot . Animals gather near water sources, and the vegetation is thinner. One of the popular areas for animal sightings is the Rufiji River.

Keep in mind, this time of year is peak season , and prices are much higher. The dry season provides little to no rain and plenty of sunshine.

During the low season (wet period), which runs from March to May , the prices are more competitive. Accommodation can be tricky during the low season as many lodges close due to fewer visitors.

Thanks to abundant rainfall, the landscape is filled with greenery. Bird watching this time of year is world-class as migratory birds flock together.

Where to Stay in Selous Game Reserve

Nearby to Siwandu Camp is Lake Manze Camp , an adventurous camp with a reputation for being an elephant highway. A little further is the sister camp, the luxury Selous Impala Camp .

Other popular camps in the park include Foxes’  Rufiji River Camp  and Selous Mbuyu Safari Camp .

No matter where you stay in Selous, you will get amazing value in luxury lodges.

Malaria and Safety in the Selous Tanzania Reserve

When going on a wildlife safari, following instructions from your expert guide will ensure safety. Although serious incidents on organized safaris rarely occur.

There is a risk of malaria throughout the country. This excludes high altitude areas over 2000 m, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro , some parts of the Eastern Arc Mountains, and the Ngorongoro Crater .

Most of the safari parks in Tanzania are high-risk zones, especially during the rainy season. To protect yourself, wear long-sleeve clothing in the evenings and apply mosquito repellent .

The Selous is Africa’s largest game reserve with a very high quality game viewing area offering a wonderful mix of vehicular and river safaris.

The park is bisected by the Rufiji River which gives the park its distinctive character and beauty – a truly relaxed, peaceful place.

The northern sector of the park is the focal area for safaris with large herds of elephant and buffalo alongside a healthy population of lions and the elusive wild dog. The many thousands of wildebeest, zebra, impala, greater kudu, hartebeest and eland all add up to make this a truly rewarding game viewing experience. There is also an impressive array of birdlife.

Safaris in the Selous are mainly lodge based, with visitors enjoying early morning and late afternoon activities whilst otherwise relaxing and enjoying the environment within camp. The walking and fly-camping options available are a true highlight.

Selous Game Reserve

A selous safari, the selous is also about exclusivity.

With a name that conjures up imagery of exploration, tented camps and abundant wildlife, it is reassuring to know that the Selous Game Reserve still delivers on all counts. One of the world’s largest and wildest conservation areas, the Selous is home to healthy populations of Africa’s biggest animals and stands as the showpiece on Tanzania’s ‘southern safari circuit’ .

A Selous safari takes you in search of elephant and buffalo herds, the latter often shadowed by lions and ever-attendant hyenas. Africa’s other big predators are there too: leopard, cheetah and wild dog as well as giraffe, zebra and many antelope species. It is a birding paradise with well over 400 species on record, and a good place to see river life – hippos and crocodiles in particular.

Accommodation is set along riverbanks and next to lakes, ensuring fine views and game viewing from the comfort of your suite. Standards of cuisine and service are high and most lodges have a swimming pool but you will want to get out and explore with your guide. Selous is Big 5 country and your morning and afternoon game drives are balanced with guided walks and boat safaris to give you a comprehensive wildlife experience. Several Selous camps have larger accommodation units that sleep up to four – ideal for families though we recommend travelling to the Selous with children only aged 12 and over.

A Selous safari is also about exclusivity. Many camps are small and secluded which makes them ideal for romantic travel. And because the reserve is barely visited compared to destinations such as the Serengeti , Masai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater , there are few, if any, other vehicles during your game drive – great for unconstructed wildlife sightings and photography.

Generally part of a southern circuit tour with destinations such as Ruaha National Park , a Selous safari is recommended for safari travellers who have experienced the northern circuit destinations of the Tarangire , Serengeti and Ngorongoro .

You can however easily combine Selous Reserve with the Serengeti National Park , giving you the opportunity to match the wild Selous with the drama of the wildebeest migration, the Serengeti calving season or the  great migration river crossing . You can also connect with Zanzibar and enjoy the indulgence of a tropical beach holiday, an easy add-on from Selous. Browse our itinerary ideas or simply contact us for a tailor-made tour.

Activities to look forward to.

selous safari

Morning & afternoon drives take you in search of elephants, buffalo, big cats & wild dogs as well as many other animals. There’s usually something special too: a bush breakfast on the morning drive; sunset drinks on the afternoon excursion.

selous safari

A nature walk with your guide opens up the Selous landscape. There’ll be big game to see but also the smaller details too such as animal tracks, insects & medicinal plants. It is a highly recommended activity for birdwatchers.

selous safari

Overlooking lakes or the reserve’s Rufiji River, Selous lodges make the most of their waterside location to offer boat safaris as an alternative to a game drive, a great way to see wildlife during the dry season & highly recommended for birders.

selous safari

With around 440 species on the checklist, the Selous Reserve is an excellent bird-watching destination all year round. Make sure you go on a river cruise to see concentrations of water birds on sandbanks & river islands.

selous safari

The rugged nature of Selous lends itself to wild & beautiful scenery; add intimate & exclusive accommodation & you have the perfect ingredients for romantic travel: luxurious suites, private guides & a candle-lit table for two.

Our mom grew up in Central and South Africa so we had visited the continent many times. My sister and I wanted to take our teens and husbands to Africa to experience the magic. We had a limited budget but big and specific expectations and by some miracle Walter was able to manage both.

Safari Online understood our needs and was able to present us with sensible options to choose from. It was evident that this tour operator has knowledgable and experienced agents who can arrange a seemless tour. We were provided with a professional online itinary which was comprehensive and easy to use, knew exactely what to expect, and encountered no stumble blocks along the way.

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver.  We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

Safari Online have been nothing but professional and incredible from the time we made our first enquiry to the last day of our stunning holiday. Nothing was too much trouble for Walter. We are now starting to plan our next family Safari for 2019. Guess who we will be booking with??? Safari Online we hope you are ready!!!!!

Would highly recommend. Safari online asked questions when booking and were efficient and knew exactly what we were looking for in terms of accommodation and animals were wanted to see. Gave advice on a few little extras with no pressure, which we did and am very grateful which make trip even more exciting. Would definitely recommend booking with them.

From the very first contact we’re very happy about the respond time and quality of information from safari-online.com. Based on the received first tailor-made quote, which is a weblink with all the details about the flights, photos of the lodges etc. we knew that this is “our” partner for this trip. Our expectations were excelled!!!

Our 28-day itinerary took us to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. A magnificent and unforgettable adventure. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently from the flights, transfers, rides, connections, etc. Absolutely wonderful! Can’t thank them enough!

We have been to Africa for 24 of the last 27 years so know a bit about what is involved. Walter has arranged the details for the last couple of years, and has done a superb job. He is always quick to respond and comes up with answers immediately……..no evasive tactics, always head-on!

Excellent service and they supplied good suggestions for our holiday they also organised all internal flights and arranged check in for us so we had no worries while on holiday. We have had a most memorable holiday staying at wonderful places thanks to Sabrina and Safari Online. Would recommend Safari Online to organise your holiday.

Communication was excellent – I asked A LOT of questions and did a ton of research myself and Walter was extremely patient with me and very responsive. he was straight forward and extremely professional. Tour itself was excellent – an incredible experience and one never to be forgotten. Everything was spot on.

A World-Class Safari in Undiscovered National Parks

Southern tanzania: off the beaten path.

Easy to Moderate

Call 1-800-368-2794 or contact us for any questions

Tanzania's true wild side is in its southern reaches, where legendary wildlife reserves like Ruaha National Park and the great Selous (now Nyerere National Park) stretch for thousands of square miles relatively undisturbed by human activity. Selous and Ruaha have been protected for more than a hundred years and they shelter globally important populations of wildlife: massive prides of lions (10 percent of Africa's lions reside here), plenty of crocodile, lion, leopard, cheetah, hippo, elephant, black rhino, buffalo, and more than 400 bird species. And southern Tanzania is absolutely the best place in Africa to watch packs of African wild dogs on the hunt. Yet these remote reserves see a fraction of the tourists that visit the northern parks! With our long-time Tanzania safari leader Goodluck Urassa, we'll set off for exciting game drives, off-road tracking, bush walks, river safaris, and even a rainforest hike. Urassa is known for his keen spotter's eye and extensive knowledge of African wildlife, and he'll be joined by local guides at all our camps. We'll explore Nyerere National Park, Tanzania's second largest wildlife sanctuary, watered by the photogenic Rufiji River, Mikumi National Park, with its plains game and African hunting dogs, and the immaculate rainforest of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, home to a wide array of endemic birds and plants—and even two endemic species of primates! Our grand finale finds us in immense Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's best kept secret, with 7,800 square miles of wildlife-rich wilderness spanning both the eastern and southern African biomes. There are but a handful of safari camps in this vast region, and we've chosen the most comfortable and best located ones, where we'll enjoy a warm welcome. Join us for an unforgettable off-the-beaten-path safari!

What the Trip is Like

The game-tracking walks are accompanied by a professional tracker and are conducted at a pace that allows an intimate exploration of the African bush.

The longer optional mountain hike on Day 8 follows a track through montane forest, but our group will likely leave the trail for periods of time to track the mangabey monkeys. This hike can be steep, slippery, and have loose footing at times, and therefore it is only recommended for travelers in good physical conditioning and with confidence in their stability on rough trails. The shorter option follows a more established trail and can be taken at a slower pace.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Safari Honeymoons

Selous Safaris

Selous game reserve.

Selous Game Reserve Location: Southern Tanzania Climate: Hot and dry, wet during Apr, May and Nov Typical Landscape: Rocky outcrops, crocodile infested lakes, hot springs, rivers, doum palms, grassy plains

The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest wildlife reserves in the world, and is raw and wild as your safari will be if you visit this wonderful area. Named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, the famous big game hunter and early conservationist – his grave can still be seen where he died, at Beho Beho in 1917 whilst fighting the Germans during World War 1. The Selous is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to it’s huge diversity of wildlife and undisturbed nature.

The Selous Game Reserve covers a total area of 54,600 sq km and has additional buffer zones – no permanent human settlement or human habitation is permitted. The Selous is one of the last remaining true wildernesses in the world and so is a must visit when on safari. The beautiful and majestic Rufiji River flows through the Selous and into the Indian Ocean – and the Selous also boasts the Steigler gorge which is a canyon of 100 metres depth and width. Walking is permitted here, and for those serious explorers and walkers this is a paradise – the abundant game also makes this an ideal first time safari destination, as well as the fact you will be staying in one of Africa’s most luxurious lodges.

The Luxury Safari Company’s favourite luxury camps and lodges in the Selous Game Reserve, in Southern Tanzania, are Sand Rivers Selous , Selous Safari Camp – these combine beautifully as a Southern Tanzania safari (also including Ruaha or Saadani ) and beach holiday in Tanzania, with beach options on Zanzibar , Mozambique , and the Tanzania Coast .

5 Days Selous and Mikumi Safari

  • Boat Safari
  • Family friendly
  • Southern Tanzania
  • Walking Safari
  • Zanzibar Safari

5 Days safari in Selous and Mikumi Safari is probably the only classic Safari to Southern Circuit of Tanzania and we offer you the best of it. Starting and ending at Dar es Salaam this safari takes you to the Greater Selous Ecosystem and gives you the rare chance to experience real African Wilderness in the few untouched areas of Tanzania. Unlike the packed Tourist Areas of the North during the peak safari seasons, This safari gives you the opportunity to be in the secluded middle of an African wilderness with the whole Savannah almost for your own. This is the best place to be if you want that ‘away from the crowds’ safari.

This our 5 day safari in Selous Game Reserve & Mikumi National Park as it is, is a nice mid range lodging safari but we can offer the same package using other upgraded accommodations if you wish or even cheaper places where possible. Ask for free Customization!

Selous and Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar

The same safari can start and end at Zanzibar as we can also arrange a fly in safari straight into Selous Game Reserve. If you are flying from Zanzibar to the Selous Game Reserve you have two options to choose from. You can either choose to fly from Zanzibar to Selous Game Reserve where you will meet up with our safari guide or you can fly early in the morning to Dar es Salaam to start the safari by road together with our safari guide. The cost for these options differ.

If you are short of time and would like to explore northern Tanzania then our 4 days Safari in Tanzania is the best option for you.

We normally help in arranging flights for those who would like to fly to Selous or to Dar es Salaam to start this 5 Days Selous and Mikumi Safari . Let us know if you would like us to help in arranging your flight to Selous from Zanzibar Island.

Crocodile itinerary: 3 days in Selous Park in southern Tanzania

boat safari in the Selous

Arrival in Selous + Safari by Boat

You will arrive at the Selous – Mtemere Airstrip early in the morning, by 9:30 a.m., where you will be welcomed and taken to the Selous Park , the largest park in all of Africa (Flight from Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar not included, except on request).

Arriving at the Selous Wildlife Reserve, you will begin enjoying the beautiful day of boat safari . The Selous is in fact one of the few parks in Africa where you can do a game drive in water .

You will explore the Rufiji River and some of the lakes in Selous, accompanied by a guide, with special open boats having canvas roofs. Boat safaris are the ideal way to enjoy the wonderful scenery of the Rufiji River with its many hippos, crocodiles, and multitudes of birds. Certainly not to be missed is the sunset view from the boat, in which the tranquillity of the river and the cry of the hippos around you syncs with the scenery of the sun descending below the horizon.

Packed lunch will be served at the park.

Dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge

Selous Park

Selous Park

We continue exploring the Selous with a jeep photo safari after breakfast.

The wildlife reserve of Selous ( Selous Game Reserve ) is one of the largest wildlife parks in the world, with a total area of 54,600 square kilometres. Some wildlife typical of the savannah (such as elephants, hippos, lyacons and crocodiles) are found in the Selous in higher concentrations than any other African park.

The vast beauty of the Selous and its abundance of wildlife are exceptional, and one of the attractions of the Selous in particular is the intimacy and authenticity of a safari here, where you can go for hours without encountering any other vehicle.

We will stop at a shaded space for picnic lunch during the hottest part of the day, usually under a large tree overlooking a lake – this can sometimes be one of the highlights of the day, as it is not uncommon for animals to come and drink while you enjoy your lunch.

Then the game drive continues into the afternoon.

Packed lunch in the park.

Dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge.

Selous Park nature walk

Selous Park + Nature Walk + return by plane

We will take a nature walk after breakfast, accompanied by an armed Park Guard and our guide.

Walking safaris are a great way to get closer to nature and learn more about the smaller species and their ecosystem. You can spot giraffes, walk in the footsteps of elephants, learn to identify animal tracks and discover fascinating information about insects, trees and colourful birds. Walks are slow and last about 2-3 hours.

Lunch will be served at the camp.

You will then be taken to Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar by local flight in the afternoon (flight not included, except on request).

Your adventure to discover Tanzania is has come to an end, but we are certain that you will return to Italy with a heart filled with memorable experiences.
