Kayaking in Sierpes Mangrove Forest

Activity level, nativos corcovado.

The prodigious Sierpe River boasts the most extensive wetland and mangrove system in all of Costa Rica. It is fed from the mystical Sierpe Lagoon where it starts, flows all the way out to the Pacific Ocean, and later returns back up the river with saltwater as high-tide rises. The vast Sierpe River system provides its inhabitants with an abundant supply of fish, rich mangrove ecosystems from which mollusks can be harvested, infinite river channels that serve as transport to neighboring communities, and an incredible diversity of wildlife. The activity is taking place within the canals of the mangrove forest in the river. The Colectivo boat departs at 7.15 am and takes around 25 minutes to reach the area where the kayaks are waiting for us to explore this incredible area. The boat picks you up at 12.00 and takes you back to Drake Bay.

Terraba Sierpe Mangroves

>> get your camera ready for a boat trip through the wetlands, characteristics of terraba sierpe mangroves.

The Terraba-Sierpe wetland is characterized by a woodland ecosystem with periodically flooded swamps and mangrove forest, palm swamp forest, sandy beaches and cliffs and covers the mouths of the Terraba and Sierpe Rivers and adjacent lagoons of Sierpe and Porvenir. The Terraba River is the main source of freshwater into the estuarine system and it drains a basin of approximately 5,000 square kilometers. Its main tributary is the General River along with its tributaries. The Sierpe River, which forms the border of the mangrove woodland has tributary rivers and streams too. The mangrove vegetation of Terraba Sierpe plays a basic role in erosion protection, both from run-off and wind erosion and in maintaining water quality.  Rainwater and run-off are stored in the wetland. Terraba Sierpe and its area of influence are geologically formed by materials from the Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary periods. The materials are of volcanic, erosive or alluvial origin. The majority of the soils in the site have a high water content, variable salt quantities and low levels of oxygen. These soils are semi fluid, poorly consolidated, grey or black in color reflecting high sulphate content. The alluvial soils, with good to poor drainage, derive from sediments and volcanic ash. The site is periodically flooded by tides, transferring fine mud’s rich in organic material. The average total tidal fluctuation is about 2 meters. The climate is very hot and humid, and precipitation is abundant from May to November. The average annual rainfall is 3,638 mm.

Human uses of the Terraba Sierpe Mangroves

Within the Terraba Sierpe Mangroves, products are extracted by organized groups, familiies and individuals. The main income generating activity in the area comes from the harvesting of the clam Anadara tuberculosa, commonly referred to as “piangua”.  There is also small scale artesanal line fishing permitted in the estuary of the Terraba Sierpe.  The “pianguas” and the mangrove bark-Rhizophora harrisonnii found here have been harvested by the indigenous Terraba Indians for estimated 1,200 years. The wetland is also used by tour operators to promote the beautiful landscape, flora and fauna.  Very few people live in the Terraba Sierpe Mangroves and the main human settlements are in the surrounding communities of Sierpe, Palmar and Cortes.

The kayaking was fun and the view of the sunset from the water was beautiful. We really enjoyed the coconut and pineapple and the bioluminescence was just amazing. The best thing about the tour however was the guides. We had Lino and Hector and they were knowledgeable and fun and just so nice! We also really enjoyed learning about the stars and viewing them with the app on our phone (which we had no idea even existed). The tour was worth every penny. Definitely do this tour. He taught us how to crack coconuts and cut pineapple on the beach waiting for the sun to go down. Once dark, we swam in the bioluminescent which was a once in a lifetime experience. Alberto took us to the best places and showed us so much. Thank you! Read more Written August 9, 2023
  • Jesse N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very informative and fun! We had an excellent time! We started by going into the mangroves near the ocean. We learned so much about the ecosystem they create and got to see some amazing flora and fauna. Then we went out to the ocean to watch the sunset. After that, we had some coconut and pineapple and swam with the bio luminescence. Read more Written August 5, 2023

He also brought keen humor and we thoroughly enjoyed our kayaking trip. Be aware, you will be immersed in the warm warm waters of the Gulf as part of this trip, as you really need to see the bioluminescence up close, with movements in the water. • lauratF6340QV 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles 3 day kayak adventure with camping If you are wondering if you should book the 3 day kayak tour, just do it! We have only good things to say about the 3 day adventure around Golfo Dulce. Alberto was our guide and we were so lucky to hang out with him for a few days. He is kind, patient, accommodating of needs as they arise, and full of information and stories to share. He is extremely knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna. He’s an expert at foraging in the jungle and fishing in the ocean. He knows many plant medicines of the jungle. It is beautiful to see someone so in tune with nature. Alberto also knows so much about the history and people of the area you can clearly see the love he has for it and it’s infectious! Jario was our support guide on the trip and he was also a very kind, enthusiastic, and helpful guide. We saw many animals during our trip including dolphins, monkeys, bioluminescent bacteria, and countless birds. We also snorkeled and saw many beautiful reef fish. We were very well fed for 3 days. Alberto caught a snapper that we ate the first night along with sides. The place we stayed the 2nd night was a garden of eden paradise. We picked a ton of fresh fruit and plantains and made a feast. We even learned how to make patecones the traditional way with Alberto. I especially appreciated all the fresh fruits delivered to us while we were paddling. If you are fare skinned like me you may need to take extra sun precautions while out on the ocean. I got a really nasty sunburn on my hands and neck even after taking so many precautions.
