skytrain travel times between stations

Below you will find maps, information and tips for getting around Vancouver on the SkyTrain system.

The Vancouver SkyTrain is the world's longest 100% automated (driverless) light rapid transit system.

In spite of its name, some portions of the SkyTrain system are underground, however, the trains mostly operate on elevated tracks and bridges providing some great views while making your way around the city.

Each station on the Millennium line features an interesting and unique architectural design. Check out the video under our Photos & Video Tab to see why riding the SkyTrain is a fun, inexpensive and quick way to explore Vancouver.

SkyTrain Lines

The Vancouver SkyTrain system consists of 3 lines - the Expo Line (completed in time for Expo 86), the Millennium Line (2001 plus the 2016 - Evergreen Extension) and the Canada Line (2010) connecting 53 stations throughout Metro Vancouver. The Canada Line has the longest portion that runs underground. The Expo Line runs underground in Downtown Vancouver and the Millennium Line runs underground through part of Coquitlam.

The Expo Line runs from Waterfront Station, which is also the terminal for the SeaBus , and loops around through downtown Vancouver passing many major venues and landmarks before angling southeast across the city into Burnaby, and New Westminster. At Columbia Station in New Westminster, it branches in 2 directions - west across the Fraser River to Surrey and north into Burnaby where it meets the Millennium Line. Travelling from downtown Vancouver you can board any Expo Line train for destinations east to Columbia Station. For Surrey, destinations you will want to take a train destined for King George Station. For stations north of Columbia Station in New Westminster and Burnaby take a train destined for Production Way/University Station.

The Canada Line provides transportation along a north-south corridor between Richmond and Downtown Vancouver. A branch from Bridgeport Station to Vancouver Airport enables SkyTrain service directly from Vancouver International Airport to Vancouver City Centre in just 24 minutes! See Getting from Vancouver Airport to Downtown for more information.

The Millennium Line starts at VCC / Clark station in the west, meets-up with the Expo Line at Commercial Broadway Station, then continues due east into Burnaby where it again connects with the Expo Line at Production and Lougheed Station before turning north and then west again into Port Moody and Coquitlam.

Major Transfer Points and Getting between Lines

In Downtown Vancouver Waterfront Station provides access to the SeaBus, Expo Line and Canada Line. It is also just a short walk to tranfer between Granville Station on the Expo Line and Vancouver City Centre on the Canada Line.

Commercial-Broadway Station is the westernmost transfer point between the Expo Line, the Millennium Line and 99 B-line Express Bus which serves major stops along the busy Broadway corridor and beyond to the University of British Columbia.

Production/University Station and Lougheed Station are the easternmost transfer points between the Expo and Millennium Line. At Production/University Station you can transfer between lines without changing platforms.

Unless you are close to a transfer point it's quicker to take a north/south bus between the Expo and Millennium Line, rather than going all the way around, when travelling to an adjacent station on the other line. Two bus routes will get you quickly between the Millennium (northern) line and Expo Line. To cross between Joyce Station on the Expo Line and Rupert Station on the Millennium line, take the #27 bus (travel time is under 10 minutes). Between Metrotown Station on the Expo Line and Brentwood Station on the Millennium Line, take the #130 bus (travel time is under 18 minutes).

SkyTrain Times and Frequency

The trains travel at speeds up to 90 kph between stations, unimpeded by the traffic below. In fact, the Expo line has the fastest end-to-end service in Canada for the distance travelled. Service is frequent, ranging from 2-20 minutes depending on your location and the time of day. Even during non-peak hours, the trains run every 6-8 minutes through most stations. The SkyTrain system is fully integrated with the SeaBus and Vancouver city buses . Your SkyTrain fare will allow you to transfer to either. See our page on fares for more details.

If you're out late at night, pay close attention to the SkyTrain operating times. The system does not operate 24/7 and first and last train departures vary according to the line and the day week. Schedules are divided into three sections: Monday-Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Holidays. Barring extraordinary circumstances, count on service from 5:30am until Midnight on weekdays, 6:30am until Midnight on Saturdays, and 8am until 11pm on Sundays and Holidays. Some lines and portions thereof operate trains both earlier and later than the aforementioned safe times. You can find exact operating times, including first and last train and travel time between stations, on the official Translink website.

Accessibility

The system is fully accessible for wheelchair users. Elevators are available in the stations and all platforms are level with the train floors. You can just ride right on if you are in a wheelchair.

How to Use the SkyTrain: SkyTrain Zones, Pricing & Service Areas in Metro Vancouver

How to Use the SkyTrain

The SkyTrain in the Vancouver Metro area is the longest fully-automated transit system in the world and is considered one of the best systems in all of North America. The carefully designed system has 53 convenient stations along nearly 80 kilometres of tracks, stretching from the heart of downtown to many of Vancouver's best suburbs . Stations are located in urban-density areas to make it possible for many people living in Vancouver to commute without a car. The rapid transit system also makes it a faster way to get to work, especially for those who live in the outer zones. Ready to get on board with the easiest way to get around the city of Vancouver ? Here's a closer look at how to use the SkyTrain.

How Do I Pay for the SkyTrain?

The SkyTrain establishes prices based on the three zones within the Vancouver Metro area, plus the Airport Zone. Zone 1 covers Vancouver. Zone 2 covers the city of Burnaby , New Westminster , and Redmond. Zone 3 covers the outer suburbs like Coquitlam, Port Moody, and the city of Surrey . Fares are based on the number of zones a rider travels through and are divided into Adult Fares and Concession Fares. Concession Fares cover school-aged children, college students, seniors and the disabled. Adult Fares apply to everyone else.

If a rider stays within the zone their trip originates in, they only pay to cross one zone. Crossing two or three zones costs more. There is also an additional $5 surcharge for travelling to the airport from any zone.

Adult SkyTrain Fares:

  • One Zone: $3.10
  • Two Zones: $4.45
  • Three Zones: $6.05

Concession SkyTrain Fares:

  • One Zone: $2.05
  • Two Zones: $3.05
  • Three Zones: $4.15

Purchasing a Compass Card from the Vancouver TransLink system and loading cash on it is the easiest and most convenient way to pay for the SkyTrain. Debit/credit cards can also be used to pay fares, but there is a slightly higher surcharge.

What Areas Does the SkyTrain Service?

SkyTrain Has Three Lines

The SkyTrain services three lines. The Canada Line runs between Downtown West Vancouver , the Vancouver International Airport (YVR), and Richmond. The Expo Line runs from Downtown Vancouver and connects to Burnaby, New Westminster, and Surrey. The Millennium Line runs from Downtown East Vancouver to Port Moody and Coquitlam. Since the system is automated, the lines stop at stations every two to six minutes during peak travel times. The lines run from around 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. daily on the weekdays and from 6:15 a.m. to 1:15 a.m. on the weekends.

The Canada Line originates from the Richmond-Brigmore Station in Richmond, travels north through South Vancouver with stops along the way, and terminates at the Waterfront Station in Downtown Vancouver. The total travel time between the two points is 25 minutes using the SkyTrain.

The Expo Line runs between Downtown Vancouver at the Waterfront Station to two endpoints: Burnaby at the Production Way Station and Surrey at the King George Station. The total travel time is about 40 minutes for both of those lines, making it one of the best options for public transportation in Surrey .

The Millennium Line originates at the VCC-Clark Station in East Vancouver and terminates at the Lafarge-Lake Douglas Station in the city of Coquitlam —near the Douglas College Coquitlam Campus. The total travel time for this route is 36 minutes from end to end.

Can I Ride the SkyTrain to YVR Airport?

The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located on Sea Island in the  city of Richmond , which makes the SkyTrain one of the most convenient transit options for getting to and from the airport. As noted above, there is a $5.00 add-on fee for every fare that travels to or from YVR on the SkyTrain, regardless of whether it is an Adult or Concession Fair.

The Canada Line runs between the Waterfront Station in Downtown Vancouver and the Richmond-Brighouse Station. This line splits at the Bridgeport Station in north Richmond. Riders travelling north from Richmond have to switch trains at the stop in the Bridgeport neighbourhood . Commuters can also take the Millennium or Expo Lines to YVR, but there are more stops to make the trip.

Riders coming from Port Moody or Coquitlam on the Millennium Line have to switch trains at the Commercial-Broadway Station, then ride the Expo Line to the Waterfront Station and switch to the YVR/Canada Line. Expo Line riders can take the SkyTrain to Downtown Vancouver and switch to the YVR/Canada Line.

What Other Public Transit Options Are in Vancouver?

The Vancouver public transit system has an extensive system of buses that includes RapidBuses, trolleys and shuttles. Most homes in the Vancouver Metro area are estimated to be within 400 meters of a public bus stop. Most of the Vancouver bus routes have stops at SkyTrain stations, which gives commuters access to the entire Metro area within an hour of their home in many cases.

A secondary rail service called the West Coast Express runs between Downtown Vancouver and the town of Mission , about 70 kilometres east of the city. This commuter rail service only runs Monday through Friday, mainly geared toward commuters who need to get downtown from some communities that SkyTrain does not service. It has stops in Port Haney, Pitt Meadows , Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam Central, Moody Centre, and the Waterfront Station.

BC Ferries is another option for travelling offshore from Vancouver to some of the island communities or North Vancouver across Burrard Inlet. The SeaBus runs a regular ferry service between Downtown Vancouver and Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. Travelling from YVR via the SkyTrain to the Waterfront Station and hopping on a ferry to many different BC island communities is possible.

SkyTrain Makes Commuting Easy in the Vancouver Metro Area

The SkyTrain is so efficient that it truly is the envy of many of the other mass transit systems in North America. It has been carefully planned with rail lines connecting the best neighbourhoods in Vancouver and outlying areas to downtown. This makes it easy for students who need to travel to the University of British Columbia for school or daily commuters who work in the downtown area.

Public Transportation and Metro Rail Information

Sky Train Vancouver

Sky train vancouver information.

With fully automated trains and all the hi-tec technology incorporated in this project, the Sky Train Vancouver is a very convenient means of public transportation in Vancouver, Canada. Agreed, Sky Train is a peculiar name for a rapid transit, but the reason for this is that it’s maiden line, the Expo, is primarily an elevated line that provides the passengers with a panoramic view of the city. It began operations 30 years ago, in the year 1985. Presently, the network consists of 3 lines, with one extension already under construction. This 68.6 km long network covers 47 stations in total. This too, could increase in the not so distant future. Expansion plans, will extend the network to around 80 km long, serving 10 more additional stations. The British Columbia Rapid Transit Company is responsible for the operations of this network. The Sky Train is integrated with the other means of public transportation to the best of its abilities. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the annual ridership of this network is 117.7 million (2014).

The Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) – A Tourist’s Guide

The Bangkok Mass Transit System, commonly known as the Skytrain or BTS, is the most efficient means of transportation in in Bangkok.

Since 1999 the BTS has been helping Bangkokians and tourists alike hop easily from one station to another

Aside from convenience and speed, fares are cheap compared to other transport modes, and of course fixed, so you won’t have to worry about being overcharged by a tuk tuk!

The Bangkok Skytrain runs on two lines comprising 44 stations.

The Sukhumvit line (light green) runs from Wat Phra Sri Mahathat to Kheha, while the Silom line (dark green) runs from the National Stadium to Bang Wa. These lines intersect at the central Siam BTS Station.

bangkok-skytrain

Service Hours

The Bangkok Skytrain operates daily from 6 AM to midnight.

Like every other city, the busiest times are the early morning and early evening, as commuters to and fro from work.

It is best to travel after 10 AM and before 4.30 PM, and then after 7.30 PM.

Key Destinations

The best thing about the Bangkok Skytrain from a tourist's perspective is that is that it enables you to visit different destinations much faster than taking a taxi.

Here's a list of noteworthy stations that will take you to some great places.

And if you want to see a big map, go here .

Asok station intersects with the underground line, the Mass Rapid Transit system (MRT).

This is the gateway to Sukhumvit and, as well as access to the Terminal 21 Mall, you can easily walk from here along to Soi Nana and the Thong Lor and Ekkamai areas.

For those wanting to visit Soi Cowboy, this is also the stop you need.

2. Mo Chit BTS

This station is your gateway to the biggest market in the city, the Chatuchak Weekend Market.

The market boasts over 15,000 shops, run by more than 11,000 stall owners.

The market draws huge crowds on Saturday and Sunday, but note that it's also open on Friday evening from 6 PM.

3. Victory Monument Station

Referred to locally as Anusawari Chai Samoraphum, Victory Monument sites in a highly urbanized neighbourhood with a great street market, fairly priced eateries and plenty of shops.

It is home to the famous Victory Monument landmark, erected in June 1941 to commemorate the Thai victory in the Franco-Thai War .

Victory Monument also boasts Santiphap Park (Park of Peace). This gem of a park is beautifully kept and deserving of a chill-out by the lake.

My advice is to head to the park around 5pm, hang out there until the sun starts to go down, then go for dinner at a local restaurant, and then browse the market. You can even walk into Sukhumvit from Victory Monument afterwards to grab a few drinks.

4. Siam Station

Because Bangkok Skytrain’s Sukhumvit and Silom lines first intersect at this station, Siam BTS Station is regarded as the central BTS station.

This is a big shopping district. Here you'll find the famous Siam Paragon, Siam Square, Paragon Cineplex and lots more shops!

5. Ari Station

Not far from Mo Chit BTS Station is Ari, a popular expat area next to the famed La Villa – a luxury-inspired mall that features designer shops and alfresco restaurants.

La Villa, which is open from 10 AM to 10 PM. La Villa is a conceptual mall, combining green space with modern architecture.

It houses an upscale supermarket, banks, service centres and a number of trendy cafés and restaurants to serve neighbouring residents and office workers.

6. Saphan Taksin Station

Saphan Taksin is the station your need for the Bangkok National Museum, and also a way to get to the Grand Palace , holy Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha – simply known as Wat Pho.

For the latter, you can alight at Saphan Taksin for the Tha Maharaj Pier.

You can then take the Chao Phraya Express boat down the river of the same name and visit these historic places.

Taking the boat is a great way to see how people live next to the shallows of this famous river.

TIP: Be careful of water drops splashing up into your mouth and eyes. You don't want dysentery.

7. Sala Daeng Station

Sala Daeng station is the closest to the Patpong entertainment district. There's also a popular night market here.

It's not somewhere you'll want to take the kids, though, certainly not after 7 or 8pm.

Patpong is a red light district and famed for kick-starting the go-go culture in Thailand's tourist districts.

The red light area is made up of two parallel streets with the night market in the middle.

There are over 20 go-go bars, as well as the infamous sex and ping-pong shows.

I don't advise going to these shows, as certain shows are famed for scamming tourists with big bar bills.

BTS-skytrain-bangkok-night

Cost & Purchase

The minimum price on the BTS Skytrain is 16 Baht for a single journey.

The price obviously increases in relation to the length of your journey, and goes up to 59 Baht for the longest journey.

There are no return journey tickets; you simply buy one on the way back, or buy for a return journey at the same time.

You can pay at a machine or use the cashier desks. A few stations have ticket machines that accept bank notes, but most only accept 1, 5 and 10 Baht coins.

If you're unsure, just queue for the cashier; they are always very helpful.

The amount you'll need to pay is detailed at the machine and on signs; it's all really straightforward.

Other Ticket Options

If you plan to roam around Bangkok and visit multiple destinations, then get a day pass – priced at 140 Baht.

If you plan to stay in Bangkok for a while, the BTS Skytrain Rabbit Card will be your best bet.

It is a reloadable card that you can tap on the turnstiles during entrance and exit.

Rates are calculated according to the station you exit, and the amount is deducted from the card.

Aside from being used to pay for fare, the Rabbit Card can be used as an electronic payment method when purchasing goods in some local shops and selected convenience stores.

The Rabbit Card has three types so take note of the type you can avail to get a discount.

  • The student card can be availed by any local or foreign student who is 23 years old and can show proof of identity as a student.
  • The adult card suits local or foreign passengers and is priced at 200 Baht. The amount covers a service fee of 100 Baht, and the rest is stored as a usable amount. As a tourist, you can have the service fee refunded if you return the Rabbit Card before you leave Bangkok.
  • The senior card is exclusive to Thai nationals who are at least 60 years old.

Connecting to Other Destinations

Bangkok mass rapid transit (mrt).

The BTS Skytrain intersects at certain stations where the Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) operates.

Currently, some MRT lines are under construction, while the existing ones operate daily from 6 AM to midnight.

The lines are marked as blue and purple, and passengers can transfer from the MRT to the BTS Skytrain at specific stations, namely:

  • Sukhumvit MRT Station/Asok BTS Station
  • Silom MRT Station/Sala Daeng BTS Station
  • Chatuchak Park MRT Station/Mo Chit BTS Station
  • Phahon Yothin MRT Station/Ha Yaek Lat Phrao BTS Station

Tickets used on the MRT are in the form of tokens for a single trip, while cards similar to the Rabbit Card are used for multiple trips.

Just like the BTS, the minimum fare is priced at 16 Baht and increases based on the distance of the destination.

You cannot use MRT tickets for the BTS, and vice versa, so you'll have to purchase a new ticket every time you transfer.

Airport Rail Link

If you’re looking for a BTS route headed to the Airport Rail Link, use the BTS Sukhumvit Line and alight at Phaya Thai BTS Station.

If you’re departing from the Airport Rail Link, join the MRT by getting off at Makkasan Station, exit 2.

Once you have exited, proceed to the Phetchaburi MRT Station using the skywalk that connects the stations. Transfer takes around 8 minutes.

Bangkok Taxis

Upon exiting any BTS station, you'll find yellow or pink taxis hanging around or driving past.

Taking taxis centrally in peak times can be a traffic nightmare, so avoid them where you can.

Make sure that the driver’s meter is running before you start your journey; some taxis try it on and charge foreigners fixed fares – this mostly happens in the tourist areas.

Boat Rides – Chao Phraya Express Boat

As mentioned previously, you can connect to boats on the river by going to Saphan Taksin station.

This boat line is an affordable means of seeing the views along the Chao Phraya River.

Current prices range from 10 Baht for the local line service within one zone, up to 32 Baht for a green thru yellow flag trip on its entire route from Pakkret to Sathon), depending on the type of boat and the distance travelled

Here's a rundown of the different boat services that fall under the Chao Phraya Express Boat service:

This is a local boat service that only operates on weekdays. It stops at every pier and costs 9-13 Baht.

2. Blue Flag

This service is marketed at tourists. It operates each day of the week and stops at nine piers. Each trip will cost you 40 Baht, but you can save more when purchasing the all-day pass, which is priced at 150 Baht.

3. Yellow Flag

This boat service operates on weekdays and is normally used by local commuters. There are 10 pier stops and the rate per trip is around 20-29 Baht.

4. Orange Flag

This boat is available daily and takes the route between Nonthaburi and Wat Rajsingkorn. Only the main piers are used as stopping points, with each trip priced at 15 Baht.

5. Green Flag

Just like the No Flag service, Green operates on weekdays and is mainly used by locals. As an express boat service, this is an ideal boat to take when travelling to the beautiful island of Ko Kret. Rates per trip normally fall around 13 to 32 Baht.

River Ferries

A total of 32 ferry crossings are available along the Chao Phraya River and in some locations in the provinces of Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan.

With cheap rates as low as 3 Baht, you can cross the river with ease.

These river ferries can be found at Sathorn Central Pier, and are connected to the BTS Skytrain through Saphan Taksin Station.

Long Tail Boats

These boats are found at Sathorn Central Pier and can be hired for private use.

If you are in a group, this is a good option for private sightseeing.

Normally offered by private tour companies, the price of long tail boat hire is usually negotiable and dependent on the number of passengers and distance of the journey.

Canal Boats

Locally known as the Saen Saep Boat Service, these boats are docked in the pier near Ratchathewi BTS Station.

Operating hours on weekdays are between 5:30 AM and 8:30 PM, and until 7 PM on weekends. Ticket rates vary but normally cost 8-20 Baht per trip, depending on the distance.

Shuttle Boats

Shuttle boats are located in the Sathorn Central Pier adjacent to Saphan Taksin BTS station. Some of the better hotels in the area offer free rides to guests.

The BTS Skytrain in Bangkok is the best way to get around town.

It is air conditioned, which is very welcome after stepping off a 32 Celsius sidewalk.

Unlike the Tube system in London, the BTS is clean and people are generally very respectful to each other.

Don't forget the seat etiquette in Thailand. Monks get priority on seats, followed by the elderly, pregnant women and children; so be prepared to give your seat up to any one of these people if they are standing.

The MRT (the underground) is equally good. It's easy to connect to the BTS and intersects at key stations like Siam and Asok.

As a rule of thumb, try to stay within 6 stops of Asok or Siam station. That way it will be quick and easy for you to get into the centre of town.

Metro Vancouverites should brace for a significant SkyTrain closure starting this weekend.

TransLink's six-week-long closure of the King George SkyTrain station in Surrey commences on Saturday, April 27.

King George is the terminus station for the Expo Line but must be closed for " essential maintenance work " through May and into the first half of June. The Expo Line will temporarily end at Surrey Central Station.

Transit users with trips that typically end or begin at King George must take a bus or get off or on at Surrey Central. They should add 15 minutes of travel time if they typically ride the Expo Line between the two stations.

At Surrey Central Station, trains to Waterfront will depart from either platform and commuters should "check the platform screens to know where the next train will arrive," according to TransLink.

Bus schedule during King George Station closure

Buses will continue serving King George Station during the closure, with some changes:

  • Additional buses will run every 15 minutes between King George and Surrey Central stations from 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on weekdays.
  • Bus routes that normally end at King George Station will stop at the station and then extend northbound to terminate at Surrey Central Station.
  • Buses that include a stop at King George Station will maintain their regular stops and routes.
  • There will be no HandyDART stop at King George Station while the station remains closed. Regular HandyDART services will be available at Surrey Central Station and other stops.

TransLink will have staff present to assist travellers and directional signage, including bus bay changes, to steer them in the right direction.

Contact TransLink's Customer Information team at  604-953-3333 , available daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For up-to-date service information, visit the  Alerts  page or the King George Closure page.

Vancouver’s SkyTrain system mapped out in a runner-friendly way

Into run commuting we mapped out how long it would take to get between vancouver's skytrain stations if one was to run at five minutes per kilometre pace..

Running in Vancouver

The SkyTrain is the rapid transit system that serves the Greater Vancouver area including 47 stations which connect the downtown core with surrounding areas.

Since they’re some of the more notable landmarks, minus the parks, buildings and mountains, in B.C.’s largest city we mapped out the time it would take to travel between each station if one was to run at five minutes per kilometre pace.

Whereas the subway system in Toronto is a bit more dense in terms of distance between stations, Vancouver’s SkyTrain often involves 10-minutes-plus of running from one station to the next. In the downtown core and along Cambie, the train runs underground while other portions of the train are above ground similar to a monorail.

Using Google Maps and basing time on the shortest route, time between stations varies between two minutes (Granville and Burrard Station, for example) up to approximately 15 minutes (Columbia and Scott Road Station). Note that the times do not take into account traffic or stop lights but is rather an estimation based on distance.

Some connecting roads between stations may not be running-friendly either.

RELATED: Here’s how long it would take to run between Toronto subway stations .

In a battle between run commuting and taking transit, one of the few times that running may be faster is in the downtown core where stations are situated close to each other. When you begin running between stations that are 2-3K apart, running will rarely win unless there are delays.

The different coloured lines indicate the three main SkyTrain routes in Vancouver including the Millennium, Expo, and Canada lines. The Canada Line is one of the easiest routes to follow if one was to run as it’s a north-south track though with the abundance of trails and parks in Vancouver, it may not be the best option.

Running from Broadway-City Hall to Waterfront, two busy stations, is approximately 3K which would take about 15 minutes to run depending on your pace and traffic. The same trip would take six minutes, not taking into account time to purchase fares, delays or entering and exiting the station, if one was to take the train.

The above Vancouver map is the second edition of our subway/rapid transit maps with Toronto being the first. The Toronto map can be found below (we used the same pace of running, five minutes per kilometre, for both):

King George SkyTrain station closed for 6 weeks

King George SkyTrain Station in Surrey is seen in this photo from TransLink. (translink.ca)

King George SkyTrain Station closed Saturday morning and won't be open again for weeks.

The closure is necessary to complete "essential maintenance work," according to TransLink, which estimates the station will remain closed for "approximately six weeks."

That timeline would mean the station reopening sometime in mid-June.

The Expo Line's Surrey terminus will temporarily be at Surrey Central Station during the closure.

"A full station closure is required to complete these important upgrades as efficiently and safely as possible," TransLink said in a news release Friday.

"Some of the work will include removing parts of the rail to replace a turnout, a mechanical device that guides trains from one track to another. Over time, these components need replacement. This section of track has been in use since the station first opened 30 years ago."

The transit provider says repairs, inspections and cleaning are expected to occur inside the station during the closure.

Buses that usually stop at King George station will continue to do so, while buses that usually end at the station will proceed to Surrey Central. On weekday mornings between 6 and 9 a.m., additional buses will be added and will run every 15 minutes between King George and Surrey Central stations.

TransLink advises transit users who normally take the SkyTrain between King George and Surrey Central to build an additional 15 minutes of travel time into their schedules.

In 2021, King George Station was one of the 10 busiest in the SkyTrain network. It fell off the list in 2022 , however, according to the most recent boarding data published by TransLink.

  • Contracting with the Ministry

The Province is moving the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project forward with the selection of a preferred proponent team to design and build the systems and trackwork.

Following a competitive procurement process, the Province has selected Transit Integrators BC to enter into final contract negotiations. The Transit Integrators BC team is comprised of:

  • AtkinsRéalis Major Projects Inc.
  • AtkinsRéalis Canada Inc.
  • Western Pacific Enterprises Ltd.

Transit Integrators BC will start initial design work and planning for the systems and trackwork of the project. Western Pacific Enterprises Ltd. is a Surrey-based company that has contributed to previous SkyTrain projects, including the original Expo Line, Millennium Line, Canada Line and the Evergreen extension.

Works related to the guideway and stations components of the project are underway along the new SkyTrain route. This includes work to relocate power lines and prepare for the start of major construction this year. People who travel on Fraser Highway should plan additional travel time or consider alternative routes, as work is taking place in multiple locations along the corridor.

The Surrey Langley SkyTrain project is a 16-kilometre extension of the Expo Line from King George Station to Langley City Centre, the first rapid-transit expansion south of the Fraser River in 30 years.

Once complete, the project will provide high-quality and low-cost transportation for people in Surrey, Langley and across Metro Vancouver. Passengers will be able to travel between Langley City and Surrey Centre in approximately 22 minutes and between Langley and downtown Vancouver in just over an hour.

The Surrey Langley SkyTrain project is being delivered through three separate contracts. In April 2024, the Province announced the selection of South Fraser Station Partners to design and build eight new stations for the project, including cycling and walking paths around the new stations.

In March 2024, the Province announced that SkyLink Guideway Partners has been chosen as the preferred proponent to design, build and finance the elevated guideway and associated roadworks, utilities and active transportation elements of the project.

Requests for proposals for all three phases were issued in early 2023 and formal contract announcements are anticipated in the coming months. Major construction on Surrey Langley Skytrain is expected to begin this year.
