Sonic Frontiers: How to Fast Travel

Players looking for the fastest methods of travel in Sonic Frontiers will find them in this guide.

Grind rails.

Sonic Frontiers is the first real open-world Sonic game ; however, Sega marketing has called it an open-zone game. It features several islands that act as hub worlds for Sonic to explore. These islands are very different from the worlds seen before in Sonic Adventure and Sonic The Hedgehog 2006. Each one of them are absolutely massive and filled with secrets, enemies, grind rails, and the famous loops that Sonic is known for running around on.

RELATED: Sonic Frontiers: Spring is in the Air Quest Guide

Moving around at the speed of sound, Sonic The Hedgehog is still the fastest living creature and can even upgrade his base speed as players progress through Sonic Frontiers . However, with each of the islands being such a vast play area, players may want to get from one side of the map to the other a bit faster. In this guide, the various methods of fast and quick travel will be explained, as well as how to activate them.

As players explore each of the islands in Sonic Frontiers, they will come across map challenges , represented as red question marks on the map screen. These challenges, once complete, will reveal a new section of the island on the map screen.

Each marker will have a nearby mini puzzle to complete --it could be to do a set amount of damage before the timer runs out or reach all the checkpoints. Whatever task is presented, completing them will reveal more of the map. Some signposts may require Sonic to return at nighttime in order to complete them.

Once the challenge is finished, players will receive an item to upgrade Sonic's abilities, along with a set of new ramps and grind rails. These new modes of traversal will join up with the previous or next map challenge on the island. Finishing several on a row will allow smooth, fast grinding between the signposts, which is very handy for moving between areas within the island.

After defeating the first boss on Kronos Island , players will find Sonic sent straight to the next island regardless of the amount of completion on the first island. Once in this new area, the game does not make it clear that travel back to Kronos is indeed possible. There are some tips beginners will find handy to get better at playing, but traveling back to unfinished maps will allow players to finish off side quests and get any collectibles they missed along the way.

At any time on an island, travel back to one of the other areas is possible. In order to go back to a previous map, players must first navigate to the pause menu . On this menu, the bottom left will now display Switch Maps . Pressing the corresponding button next to Switch Maps will bring up the available islands Sonic can travel to. Select one of the islands, and the game will teleport him to the desired map, provided it has already been visited.

During Sonic's journey in the strange lands within Sonic Frontiers , he will meet the tiny creatures called Kocos. These tiny stone-like critters are scattered in every nook and cranny on all the islands and are very similar to the Korok seeds from Breath of the Wild .

It turns out that these Kocos have gone missing and should be returned to Elder Koco. In return for bringing back the lost Koco, Sonic will receive an upgrade to either his speed or the number of rings he can carry.

Elder Koco has a counterpart Hermit Koco -- if Sonic can find him, he will boost offensive and defensive stats in exchange for attack and defense seeds found when puzzles are solved, or enemies are defeated. These two Koco have another bonus in the form of becoming a fast travel poin t. Should players locate Big the Cat in the fishing area, they can fish for various items, two of which are scrolls.

The two scrolls are for Hermit Koco and Elder Koco; finding both will unlock their fast travel feature. When both scrolls have been found, any Hermit or Elder Koco will be able to be used as a fast travel point via the map screen.

The tab that reads All Icons at the top of the screen will need to be changed to Fast Travel before it can be used, so press the button to change the icons displayed on the map to fast travel, and then Sonic can teleport to the Koco icons on display.

Fishing with Big is a random affair, so a few attempts may be required before the scrolls are found. Be sure to collect purple coins while exploring the islands, as these are used in exchange for a shot at fishing.

Across the islands, players will come across portals. These massive ancient statues will at first require a portal gear to activate them and access the cyberspace area within. These cyberspace stages are classic 2D or 3D Sonic stages, each with its own challenges that will reward players with vault keys.

To use the portals as fast travel points, players must first reveal 100% of the map they are on. To reveal each section of the map, every map challenge puzzle must be completed . The portals are handily scattered across various areas of the map, so getting across the island should be a breeze once the option to use them as fast travel points has been unlocked. Like the Elder Koco method of fast travel, on the map screen, swap over from All Icons to the Fast Travel tab to select the fast travel to portal option.

Sonic Frontiers is out now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

How to Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers

Gotta go fast? Use Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel to island hop and zap to the Elder Koco with our guide

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel is included in the wave of information given to you during the first hour of the game, so you might miss the details of how it all works, especially as it’s very likely the game will teach you how to do it before you actually can. That said, just by playing the game you’re likely to fulfil the criteria without realising, so we’ll first tell you the basics for how Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers works, then the detailed process below that for how to unlock it in case you’re properly stuck.

How to use Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

To switch to a previously explored island, bring up the map then look at the bottom left of the screen for the ‘Switch maps’ button prompt. Press the button shown and then choose the island you want to go to. Done.

Alternatively, to Fast Travel on the island you’re currently on, open the map and push the right bumper to change the map display to ‘Fast travel’. This will show you Elder Koco or Hermit Koco, provided you’ve added them to the map and have their corresponding scroll. Simply highlight the special Koco to whom you wish to travel then push the displayed button to zap right there. Don’t have the Elder Koco scroll or Hermit Koco scroll? Then read on.

How to unlock Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel can be unlocked pretty quickly, but there are a few steps you need to complete first. These are:

1. Collect Purple Coins

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

First off, collect purple coins whenever you see them. They can usually be found on the stone ruins that are dotted about the landscape, often up high, which require some clever use of Sonic’s double jump ability (and a lot of patience as the game isn’t particularly well-suited to precision platforming). Collect at least 10 to give yourself a good chance of unlocking Fast Travel. The more you have before you go fishing, the easier it will be.

2. Find the Purple Portals / Fishing Spots

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Each main island has a fishing spot hidden behind a Purple Portal. The first one can be found at the end of the peninsula past the purple web-like ruins (pictured – the portal is in the middle of the image and has a circle at the top of it).

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Unlock the portal then go and see Big, who teaches you how to fish. It’s very simple – just push the button to cast your line, then again when you get a bite, and then again whenever the white ripple overlaps the red area. There may be several of these, but to start with there’s just one.

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Each go at fishing costs purple coins, the required number rising as you go through the game. It starts at one coin per cast, though, and after a few successful catches, you should land an Elder Koco scroll. Keep fishing and you should also land the Hermit Koco scroll – note that you’ll need to fish again at each new island to unlock the corresponding scrolls there. This unlocks Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel, but only if you’ve already added the corresponding Koco to your map. So keep fishing until you ideally have both scrolls, then exit the fishing spot. For now, we’ll use Elder Koco’s scroll.

3. Find the Elder Koco

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

You need to add Elder Koco or Hermit Koco to the map to unlock Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers. Do this by completing the mission puzzles in the area to remove the ‘fog of war’ from the map screen and show where they are located.

How to Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers

Mission M-023 near the waterfall (pictured above) where you have to Cyloop the white sparkles within a time limit is the first. This will reveal Elder Koco, who’s standing nearby. So go and speak to them, and level up while you’re there.

4. Fast Travel

Sonic Frontiers Fast Travel

Congratulations! You’ve found Elder Koco and have their scroll, so you can revisit them at any time. To do this, bring up the map, push the right bumper until you get to ‘Fast travel’ (it’s the first thing you’ll switch to when you’re near the start of the game), highlight Elder Koco’s icon and confirm. Boom! Gotta travel fast. Repeat the process for Elder Koco and Hermit Koco on each island and fast travel awaits.

Good thing Sonic likes jumping through hoops, eh? One final thing to mention is that extra-long grind rails also appear as you clear areas of the game, allowing you to fast travel in a more conventional way between areas of the island you’re currently on. Just jump on, hit the right trigger to boost, and take in the views.

How to unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

Speed your way across the map.

Sonic Frontiers fast travel - Sonic running through woods

Sonic Frontiers' fast travel isn't the easiest feature in the game to unlock, but once you do, you can warp across the Starfall Islands and save Sonic's little legs having to run everywhere. It's a slightly different system than what you'd usually expect in an open-world game, and requires more than your typical Assassin's Creed-esque scaling of monuments.

In this Sonic Frontiers fast travel guide, I'll explain the different ways you can teleport in-game, how to unlock portals across the map, and also how to get items that let you fast travel even if you don't have the portal system unlocked.

How to unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

While Sonic Frontiers does let you fast travel between the world's zones, if you want to fast travel within a zone itself, you have to unlock this separately. The way you do this is to complete all of the challenges scattered across that zone . These little puzzles are marked with question marks on the map, and they vary from running time trials, to stepping on switches, to sprinting in a hamster wheel.

When you complete one it'll reveal more of the map, and once they're all completed, you'll be able to fast travel between Cyberspace Portals. In order to see these, you need to cycle through the map using Q and E until you get to the 'Fast Travel' tag . If you're travelling between separate zones, you'll need to switch between the map. Completing these challenges also spreads and connects the ancient rail network across each zone so you can slide along them and generally move through the area faster.

The second way to unlock fast travel is with the Elder Koco's Scroll and Hermit Koco's Scroll items. You can get them as a potential reward from the Fishing Spot in each zone, as Sonic has a chance to catch one instead of a fish. When you return to the open world, you'll be able to use the scroll to fast travel to an Elder Koco or Hermit Koco within the zone. If you do decide to go fishing, don't forget to bring Purple Coins with which to pay Big the Cat. There is a fishing spot in every zone, so you can gather more of the items for the Koco Elders and Hermits located there.

How to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

Sonic is, and always has been, about going fast. Whether it is in his 2D or 3D games, running as fast as possible through stages to reach the end as the blue blur has always been the goal. With Sonic Frontiers , our favorite hedgehog is placed in a series of open zones far larger than anything he's explored prior. While these areas are designed to be run through and explored initially, you may eventually just want to get where you're going without having to run there.

What You Need

Get either the Elder Koco and/or Hermit Koco scroll

Locate the Elder Koco and/or Hermit Koco

As unintuitive as it might sound for a game about running, Sonic Frontiers does have a fast-travel system to let you skip across to various positions on the game's islands. This can help you finish off any lingering challenges or grab those last collectibles in a hurry. The thing is, this option isn't open to you right away, and there are specific requirements you need to meet before you can teleport yourself from place to place. Here's how you can unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers .

How to unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

While not overly difficult to unlock, fast travel in Sonic Frontiers does have a few steps that need to be followed. Here's what you need to do.

Step 1: Collect Purple Coins. There's no specific amount needed, but the more you have, the easier it will be.

Step 2: Locate the fishing spot on that island. There's one per island, and they are not marked on the map.

Step 3: Unlock the Portal and talk to Big the Cat to learn how to fish.

Step 4: Pay Purple Coins to do the fishing mini-game until you reel in either an Elder Koco or Hermit Koco scroll, or both.

Step 5: Exit the fishing zone.

Step 6: Open up the map and hit the right bumper until you highlight the Fast travel option.

Step 7: Select either the Elder or Hermic Koco's location, depending on which scroll you have and where you want to go, and confirm your choice.

Step 8: You will need to repeat this process for each of the game's islands to unlock fast travel on them.

No matter what perks or skills your character has in Fallout 4, hacking will always come down to your ability as a player. There's no way to cheat the system here, and if you don't grasp what the game is asking you to do, you're mostly out of luck. Terminals will hide great loot behind their cryptic puzzles, as well as allow you to take over certain controls to turn your enemy's security against them. Some have very interesting logs about certain characters or events for all you lore junkies out there. Hacking has tons of uses, so let's brush up on your computer skills and give you a refresher on how to hack in Fallout 4. How to hack in Fallout 4 When you first interact with a terminal to hack in Fallout 4, it will be a little overwhelming. As long as you have a high enough hacking skill to attempt a hack, you can go right into the minigame.

The basic idea of hacking is to find words hidden in that jumble of letters and symbols. Your goal is to find the correct word to crack the terminal before you run out of attempts. Once you find any word and select it, the terminal will tell you how close that word is to the correct one based on how many letters it has in the same space as the answer in the form of a likeness rating. The higher the rating, the more letters it has in common. It is somewhat similar to Wordle, only you don't type in the words yourself.

Each piece of Fallout 4 DLC adds something substantial to the base experience. In the case of the Automatron expansion, an entire new questline pitting you against a robot army led by a figure known as the Mechanist. Starting it isn't as difficult as starting other DLCs like the Nuka-World expansion, but it-s still a bit cryptic. Buying the DLC doesn't automatically make it apparent how to actually start this new adventure, but we'll give you specific directions to find it in the wasteland.

The first major DLC expansion for Fallout 4 lets players go to the abandoned amusement park called Nuka-World. While there's plenty of fun and excitement to be had here, don't expect it to come from the roller coasters or carnival games since this park is the battleground between rival raider gangs. This new zone adds a ton of new quests and side activities to the base experience, but it isn't as simple to get to as a real theme park. Don't worry if your Pip-Boy isn't helping you get to Nuka-World -- we'll show you how to start this DLC.

Sonic Frontiers fast travel option

How to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

Image of Nebojša Prijić

Sonic Frontiers is an open-world platformer where you can go wherever you want. That sounds amazing, but you'll need some faster transportation after a while. Luckily, there is a way for you to get across the map quickly, so you only spend 15 minutes running from point A to point B. To do that, you need to learn how to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers.

How to use fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

There are two ways to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers, and for both options, you'll need to invest time in exploring the map. Essentially, the game wants to make you explore the wilderness before you get to the point where you can teleport around the map. Here's how to unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers:

  • Complete all challenges to reveal the locations of the portals.
  • Use Koco scroll for fast travel across the map.

Where to find Fast Travel Scrolls in Sonic Frontiers?

The fastest way to travel across the map in Sonic Frontiers is to use Elder Koco and Hermit Koco scrolls. Those fast travel scrolls allow you to travel to Koco characters on the island from which the scroll is. As it happens, scrolls can be acquired only via the fishing mini-game. Follow these steps to get fast travel scrolls:

sonic frontiers fast travel

  • Make sure you have a lot of Purple Coins (you can carry 999).
  • Find a place with a fish icon.
  • Start fishing those scrolls.
  • Use the scrolls to fast travel to Elder Koco or Hermit Koco.

Basically, you're using these fast travel scrolls to teleport near them if they are located near the point you want to get to. It's not ideal, but it can help until you can use portals scattered across the map. And now you know how to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers (besides running around, obviously).

How To Fast Travel In Sonic Frontiers

While Sonic may be ridiculously fast, the world of Sonic Frontiers is so big that it still demands you to traverse some fairly large distances. While the enjoyment of zooming across the map never gets old, if you’re strapped for time or simply want to complete an objective quickly, then fast travel can be a viable option.

Sonic Frontiers boasts many open zones, and returning to old areas, along with fast travelling across the one you’re currently in can be a huge benefit. If you’re wondering how fast travel works in Sonic Frontiers and how to use it, here’s everything you need to know.

  • If you want to learn more about the game, find out what Egg Memos are and where to find them in Sonic Frontiers .

sonic frontiers fast travel

There are actually a few ways to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers , and unlocking all the abilities will vastly decrease how much busy work you need to accomplish. To traverse between zones in the game, you will need to advance past the main story mission in that area that unlocks the next one. After this point, simply open up the map and press Switch Maps. It’s from here you’ll be able to teleport to a previously unlocked zone.

However, you may be curious as to how to fast travel within a zone itself, and this is a slightly less accessible feature. The main way is to complete every puzzle in that zone to gain the ability to fast-travel to any Cyberspace Portal on the map. While this may seem simple, Sonic Frontiers has a lot of puzzles to complete, so you may be wanting a faster way to do this.

We recommend visiting Big the Cat and playing the fishing mini-game. Throughout this, you’ll hook many rewards, but the ones you’re really going to want are either the Elder Koko’s Scroll or the Hermit Koco’s Scroll. These instantly unlock the ability to travel to upgrade NPCs in that zone, meaning you can drastically cut down your time sprinting across the map.

It’s worth doing this solution above every time you enter a new zone, to quickly capitalize on the fast travel mechanics and get back to what you love doing in Sonic Frontiers .

  • We also have a rundown on how to complete the tricky drain the water puzzle in Sonic Frontiers .

Sonic grinding down a rail in Sonic Frontiers.

How to Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers

Image of Justin Mercer

Sonic Frontiers features the most expansive areas Sonic has ever had the chance to zoom through. The hedgehog may be fast, but what should you do if you decide you want to head from one corner of the map to the other? Fear not, because this guide is going to walk you through every method of fast travel in Sonic Frontiers and how to use each one .

How to Fast Travel Using Challenge Rails in Sonic Frontiers

A rail leading away from an environmental challenge in Sonic Frontiers

Undertaking the many environmental challenges in Sonic Frontiers’ open world is vital part of progressing through the game. Successfully completing a challenge will cause a large white railing to appear in the general vicinity, and these will directly link to other completed challenges nearby.

Though not fast travel in the traditional sense of the term, boosting your way down these railings allows Sonic to cover large swaths of distance with minimal platforming and input required from the player. As a result, they’re perfectly suited for getting to another section of the map you’ve visited before in a speedy manner.

How to Fast Travel Between Zones in Sonic Frontiers

A screenshot of the map in Sonic Frontiers.

Once the player finishes the main story sequence of a given area, Sonic is immediately transported to the next one via a cutscene. After this happens, you may be wondering if you’re able to return to the previous zone in order to complete any remaining missions or snatch up any leftover collectibles.

Rest assured, you can head back just as quickly as you left. All you have to do is open the map screen, press the button prompt found in the bottom left of the screen labeled “Switch Maps,” and then select the area you want to return to. Sonic will be placed at the very first area of whichever option you select.

How to Fast Travel Within a Zone in Sonic Frontiers

The Elder Koco Scroll item found in Sonic Frontiers.

In order to unlock proper fast travel in Sonic Frontiers, the player must complete every challenge in a given zone. After this requirement is fulfilled, the player will be able to select any cyberspace portal found on that map and instantly teleport to it.

Additionally, the game does provide the ability to warp within a zone itself before completing all challenges, but there are a few steps that need to be taken in order to access it.

Throughout the game you’ll come across purple cyberspace portals. These lead to the fishing mini-game hosted by none other than Big the Cat, and playing it is the key to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers.

After successfully reeling in a catch, Sonic will occasionally pull up a non-aquatic prize like a treasure chest or jump springs. Another potential reward are items called Elder Koco’s scroll and Hermit Koco’s scroll. These items permanently unlock the ability to instantly travel to the upgrade NPCs in that zone, which the player can use to zip to a nearby area of the map instead of running the whole way there.

That was a breakdown of how to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers . If you’re curious about what you can do with the two NPCs mentioned above, our guide on raising Sonic’s stats is for you. Feel free to also take a look at our explanation of how many zones and levels there are in Frontiers.

Sonic frontiers: how to unlock fast travel.

To unlock the option to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers, players can either acquire a special Scroll or complete all the missions of a specific region.

While Sonic is capable of going exceptionally fast on foot in Sonic Frontiers , it is hard to outdo the convenience of the fast travel mechanic when traversing the vast open world. As one would expect, fast travel enables the speedy hedgehog to instantly transport himself from one location to another without the need to travel or perform any additional actions. Of course, some hardcore immersion-centric fans might argue that such a mechanic defeats the purpose of being the fastest creature to exist. Nevertheless, many players will likely prefer going to a location immediately without worrying about enemy encounters, uneven obstacle courses, or sizeable objects on the terrain, like trees.

Fast travel in Sonic Frontiers ' big open-world is not a singular mechanic but instead divided into two options, meaning that the world offers multiple ways to conveniently traverse its islands. The first method is through Portals scattered across the islands of the map that serve as traditional fast travel points, forming a connected system of POIs. To unlock these Portals, Sonic must complete all the missions, puzzles, or challenges within a specific region.

How Does Fast Travel Work in Sonic Frontiers

For instance, to unlock the fast travel Portal in Area 1-4 in Sonic Frontiers , fans must complete the following tasks:

  • " Reach the goal. "
  • " Clear with Rank S time. "
  • " Clear with 20 Rings. "
  • " Find all Red Star Rings. "
  • " Clear all 4 missions! "

The order in which players fulfill these tasks does not matter. However, once all the missions have been completed, the fast-travel cyberspace Portal in Sonic Frontiers will activate, enabling players to use it as an interactive landmark to reach the area instantly. To access these Portals, players must open their in-game map and push the right bumper on their gamepad to view all the "Fast Travel" icons they have unlocked. Then, select one of the Portals to teleport to the location immediately.

According to YouTube content creator TheKevsterTV , the second way to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers is by using Scrolls that will teleport Sonic to either Elder Koco or Hermit Coco. These Scrolls can be obtained randomly from fishing, the minigame that fans can perform by giving Big the Cat Purple Coins. However, it is essential to note that Scrolls can only be used on the island from which they are obtained. In other words, players will need to catch multiple Scrolls if they use the Elder and Hermit fast-travel mechanic in Sonic Frontiers .

Fast Travel is a staple of open-world games, and Sonic Frontiers incorporates it with a few unique twists. Sonic Frontiers features massive open-world locations instead of constricted platforming sequences. It brings a Sonic-themed twist to several open-world conventions but also convolutes them in the process. This is how to unlock Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers.

Fast Travel seems absent for most of Sonic Frontier’s run time, but it exists, albeit in an unusual manner. Fast Travel can be unlocked in two different ways, each of them requiring a lengthy grind. The first method to unlock Fast Travel is to fill in the entire map by finding all of the ancient switches and performing the map challenges.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Those are the key to unlocking Fast Travel if you see a challenge in the open world, like the one pictured above. Each island has a map shrouded to players until all these challenges are completed. Once you complete every challenge on a particular map, Fast Travel will be unlocked for that specific location.

Fast Travel will allow you to instantly travel to any Portals and Fishing Spots, including ones you haven’t visited yet. This isn’t an easy method, but it is reliable and doesn’t require luck like the second method.

The second method involves fishing. Gather any purple coins hidden in the environment, then take them to a fishing spot. Big the Cat will introduce you to the fishing minigame. While fishing, you have a chance at acquiring a Koco Scroll. These items will allow you to travel to Hermit or Elder Koco in a given location.

While neither of these methods is particularly fast, they work once you’ve put in the legwork to unlock them. Make sure to complete every challenge to unlock Fast Travel quickly.

Sonic Frontiers: How to fast travel across the map

There’s two main ways

Sonic Frontiers has a somewhat obtuse fast travel system: but there’s actually two core ways to get around.

Here’s a rundown on both of them.

Sonic Frontiers: How to fast travel across the map 2

Fast traveling through the main menu

After completing the first island (read: after beating Giganto ), you’ll unlock the ability to fast travel between islands you’ve already visited.

To do this, just press the map button (touchpad on PlayStation, back on Xbox), then select the prompt to “switch maps” (Triangle/Y on Xbox), found in the lower left hand corner of the screen.

The game will bring up a simple island select menu (there’s five main locations in all). Just press X/A to confirm it and you’re good to go. It’ll drop you in the focal point of the island (typically where you start after first visiting it).

Sonic Frontiers: How to fast travel across the map 3

Fast traveling via scrolls from fishing

If you want to get around each island individually, you’ll need to put in a bit of work.

Fast travel  within islands is done via scrolls, which are acquired from the fishing minigame . They’re randomly doled out, and allow you to travel to the Elder Koco and Hermit Koco NPCs (the main skill-up and respec characters). Just keep fishing until you find scrolls, and it’ll unlock.

We have a full guide on the fishing minigame here !

How to fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers worlds are massive and even if you max out your speed stat, it’ll take you some time to explore them all fully and get where you need to go.

There is, however, a way to fast travel in the game despite Sega and Sonic Team doing little to tell the player how to unlock the function. Thankfully, we were able to grind away at the game until we found a couple of methods to tell you everything you need to know about fast traveling in the game.

How to unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers

There are two methods to unlock fast travel but both require a bit of grinding. It isn’t something you can do from the get-go.

The first method is to unlock Koco Scrolls, which can be found in each world’s fishing mini-game. These are rare spawns and will require Purple Coins to have a chance at finding one, but once you get one of two different scrolls, you will be able to fast-travel around the map to the different Elders on offer.

You can find the Fishing spots by looking for a Portal with a Fish icon. You simply need to go up to it and access it so long as you have a handful of Purple Coins in your inventory.

sonic frontiers fast travel

The second option to unlocking fast travel is even more time-consuming. By completing all challenges on the map, you’ll fully reveal each world’s map. Doing so will allow you to fast travel to each Portal in the world even if you have never visited it.

Obviously, each method isn’t ideal as it forces players to grind and explore large parts of the map for an hour or two before they can unlock the feature. The fast travel locations as well are too few and far between, which doesn’t give players many decent options to go where they need to go.

In short, while the game does have a fast travel option it isn’t ideal—but it’s better than nothing.

How to Fast Travel in Sonic Frontiers

Image of Lucas White

I’ve been loving Sonic Frontiers from the jump. But like another game I’ve been playing this year, sometimes you run into some obtuse or poorly-explained element. In Sonic Frontiers, I think that element is definitely fast travel. There’s absolutely a fast travel mechanic in this game, but the way it’s introduced is kind of weird and might not even show up for several hours depending on your play style. So if you’re still trying to figure that out, here’s how to unlock fast travel in Sonic Frontiers.

Related: How to Unlock Fishing in Sonic Frontiers

Fast Travel has two different states, in a manner of speaking. Arguably there are three, but that third one is a stretch. First, in order to unlock actual for real fast travel, you need to find Big the Cat. That’s where the fishing minigame comes in, which we’ve explained how to unlock here at Prima Games. You can catch a couple scrolls, one for the Elder Koco and one for the Hermit Koco. Once you have those items you can instantly teleport yourself to those characters if you’ve found ‘em.

sonic frontiers fast travel

To actually fast travel once you get it, there’s a bit of a fumbly thing you have to do. Open the map, then use the bumpers to sift through the icon filters until you get to Fast Travel. You can’t just do it from the high-level map for some reason.

The second “state” of fast travel concerns the Cyber Space Portals. These are also fast travel points, but not until you’ve completed the map for the area you’re in. So if you end up having the game tell you the portals are for fast travel well before you find fishing (yep, me, this happened to me), don’t be confused. Big will show you the way.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Finally, the weird third option. As you advance in the game more rails floating in the sky like all the others will appear, including sections that move you from one major piece of the map to the others. It’s sort of a shortcut system to help you get around faster before you can fast travel. So it’s like a… fast-ish travel. Yeah.

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! • Towels Included

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

sonic frontiers fast travel

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

sonic frontiers fast travel

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

sonic frontiers fast travel

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

sonic frontiers fast travel

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

sonic frontiers fast travel

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

sonic frontiers fast travel

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

sonic frontiers fast travel

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

sonic frontiers fast travel

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
