Welcome to Costa Mesa’s Arts District Sculpture Tour

One of Southern California’s best-kept secrets is an art walk in Costa Mesa featuring contemporary and modern works by internationally renowned sculptors. The sculptures are integral to the vision of the Segerstrom family, founders of South Coast Plaza, of creating a cosmopolitan center in Orange County where the arts and commerce come together and flourish.

Spend a morning or afternoon exploring this incomparable public art collection.

The closest parking structure to the beginning of the art walk is the Plaza Tower Parking structure located on Anton Boulevard and Park Center Drive. Enter via Park Center Drive, across from The Westin South Coast Plaza.

The closest parking to the end of the art walk is the parking lot right outside of Macy’s or the South Parking Structure at South Coast Plaza. Parking in either of these locations is free.

Walking Directions

Park and exit the Plaza Tower parking structure onto Park Center Drive. Head down Park Center Drive and cross Anton Boulevard. Pass Specialty’s Café and turn left on the palm tree-lined path. Continue walking and you are at the edge of 1 California Scenario .

1. California Scenario

 Isamu Noguchi, 1982

Recognized as one of the country’s preeminent sculpture gardens and an iconic public space, Noguchi’s masterpiece sits between two office towers. The garden’s design symbolizes elements of California’s geography, while the piece Spirit of the Lima Bean speaks to the agricultural heritage of the land and the artist’s relationship with Henry Segerstrom, who commissioned the work.

Head past Spirit of the Lima Bean. To the right of the Comerica Bank building just before TGI Fridays is 2 Sun Ribbon .

south coast art tour

2. Sun Ribbon

Claire Falkenstein, 1980

Located between California Scenario and Anton Boulevard, the artfully orchestrated stripes of the stained-glass windscreen create a playful counterpoint to vertical rise of the adjacent buildings.

Passing TGI Fridays, walk toward Anton Boulevard. Once you’re on the corner of Anton Boulevard and Avenue of the Arts, cross the street and turn left, walking north on Anton Boulevard. Make a right turn after passing Park Tower sign right before Pizzeria Ortica. Walk straight. Before reaching Samueli Theater, you will arrive at 3 Utsurohi 91 .

south coast art tour

3. Utsurohi 91

 Aiko Miyawaki, 1991

Located between the Samueli Theater and Plaza Tower, the sculpture is a site-specific piece commissioned for the entry court to Cesar Pelli’s stainless steel tower. The sculpture’s chromium steel loops serve to frame details of the architecture and plaza (designed by Peter Walker), while each column includes one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.

Pass Utsurohi 91 and Samueli Theater and head toward Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The 4 Connector will be on your right. Go inside Connector.

4. Connector

Richard Serra, 2006

Rising majestically on the plaza between Segerstrom Hall, Orange County Museum of Art, and the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the 65-foot-tall steel sculpture by renowned American sculptor Richard Serra symbolically and visually connects the art and architecture of the cultural campus.

Walk away from Avenue of the Arts toward the entrance of Segerstrom Hall, which will be on your right. Once you reach the front of the center, you will be underneath 5 Firebird . For a closer look, take the spiral staircase up to the second level of the center.

south coast art tour

5. Firebird

Richard Lippold, 1986

The gold, red, and silver sculpture soars through the iconic arch of Segerstrom Hall. Seemingly suspended in the air, the 60-foot-tall aluminum and stainless-steel sculpture named for a famous ballet integrates artistically and architecturally with the performing arts hall.

Once on the second level, head toward the Center Tower Parking Structure. On your right, you will find 6 Reclining Figure .

south coast art tour

6. Reclining Figure

Henry Moore, 1981

The stately figure reclines at the upper entrance to Segerstrom Hall, designed by landscape architect Peter Walker. The sculpture, which was a gift to Segerstrom Center for the Arts by a major support group, The Angels of the Arts, includes elements of abstraction and realism that frame and accent the public spaces of the arts plaza.

Head down the ramp across from Reclining Figure. On the right, you will be able to spot 7 Sun Glitter and 8 Jonah and the Whale down below.

south coast art tour

7. Sun Glitter

Carl Milles, 1932

A bronze mermaid rides a dolphin through the spray in this work at Center Tower. Known as a master of fountains, the Swedish sculptor’s work is rare in California, but often occupies prominent public spaces in Sweden, the Midwest, and the East Coast.

south coast art tour

8. Jonah and the Whale

Carl Milles, 1931

The focal point of a water feature at the base of Center Tower, the whimsical work features Jonah emerging from the mouth of the whale. The two bronzes by Milles are visible from the walkways around the building, as well as the club on the lower level.

Continue down the ramp and enter Center Tower. In the lobby, you will find 9 Oiseau.

south coast art tour

Joan Miró, 1981

Perched in the lobby of Center Tower, the fantastical bronze bird by the Spanish surrealist brings to physically imposing form the sublime bird-like figures common in his paintings.

Take one of the three elevators to the left of Oiseau down to the C level of the building. Once you reach the C level, you will find 10 Fermi .

south coast art tour

Tony Smith, 1975

The white marble sculpture named for the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Enrico Fermi suggests the complex yet elegant structures found in nature.

Take the elevators back up to the lobby level and exit Center Tower the way you entered. Turn right and walk down the ramp toward the intersection of Park Center Drive and Town Center Drive. Turn right onto Park Center Drive and walk toward the wooden bench. Before reaching the bench, turn right and you will find 11 Four Lines Oblique Gyratory-Square IV moving with the wind.

south coast art tour

11. Four Lines Oblique Gyratory-Square IV

George Rickey, 1973

The stainless-steel kinetic sculpture interacts with the breeze in a Center Tower courtyard. The 24-foot-high piece is visible from a walkway  between the tower and a parking structure, offering an elevated view of how Rickey’s art moves in concert with nature.

From Four Lines Oblique Gyratory- Square IV, walk back to Park Center Drive. Head back to the intersection of Park Center Drive and Town Center Drive. Cross Town Center Drive, past Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Continue past South Coast Repertory, and on your right you will see 12 Night Shift .

south coast art tour

12. Night Shift

Jim Huntington, 1982

The 30-ton granite and steel sculpture is set in the green park between South Coast Repertory Theater and The Westin South Coast Plaza. The object at first may appear as if the architecture of commerce and culture developed around it. But like the setting, it is a combination of natural and built spaces that define the public space.

Continue down the concrete path toward the brightest structure in sight 13 The Ram .

south coast art tour

13. The Ram

Charles Owen Perry, 1979

Trained as an architect, the sculptor of the 20-foot, 7-ton bright yellow steel piece of art next to Park Tower was inspired by the geometry of natural forms. The colorful, curving, and eye-catching sculpture is popular with diners, guests at the hotel, and those enjoying the public spaces around South Coast Plaza.

Enter Park Tower through the glass doors located to the left of Vaca. Once inside, turn left and in the elevator lobby you will find 14 Tour Aux Jambes .

south coast art tour

14. Tour Aux Jambes

 Jean Dubuffet, 1973/1980

The monolithic structure of entwined forms is in the lobby of Park Tower. The modernist glass canopy of the lobby designed by architect Helmut Jahn adds light to the sculpture’s surroundings, highlighting the colors and contours of the French sculptor’s work.

Exit the building in the way you entered and head toward Unity Bridge. Cross the bridge and enter South Coast Plaza. Head past Victoria’s Secret toward Carousel Court. Make a right and head toward Macy’s. Once you’ve reached the balcony between Harry Winston and Cartier, you will find yourself in Jewel Court. Look up and view the 15 Jewel Court Dome .

south coast art tour

15. Stained Glass Dome

Marion Sampler, 1973

The kaleidoscopic stained-glass dome that brings light and color to Jewel Court has become an iconic symbol of South Coast Plaza. The  magnificent skylight made of 7,200 pieces of glass is an early example of the many works of art, architecture, and design commissioned by South Coast Plaza’s owners.

To return to the Plaza Tower parking structure, exit the shopping center through the exit in between Bloomingdale’s and Seasons 52. Head toward Bristol Street on Anton Boulevard. Cross Park Center Drive and turn left. You will be at the entrance of the parking structure.

Meadows created this trio especially for South Coast Repertory, with the intention of bringing the theater into the outdoors. These pink, purple, blue and silver sculptures not only invite the audience to continue their theatrical experience, but also provide patrons with a place to sit on sunny days. CONSTELLATION Four stories above the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall lobby is a stunning piece of architectural jewelry. Three hundred individual strands of highly polished stainless-steel form a circular pattern 40-feet in diameter. The strands are in graduated lengths, the longest reaching 40 feet. The combination of elements results in an intense sparkle that is reflected in the polished surfaces and glass. Located in the lobby of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.

south coast art tour

Welcome back to the South Coast of New England. This year is extra special as we celebrate the 20th Annual SCA Open Studio Tour!

South Coast Artists is proud of reaching this 20 year milestone because it speaks to the strength of our community of artists and art lovers. Participation in the arts has grown exponentially here along the South Coast. SCA continues to thrive because of the enthusiastic support of talented artists, generous sponsors, and dedicated volunteers. Thousands of volunteer hours enable SCA to provide one of the finest art experiences in New England.

This summer, our special  Open Studio Tours  happen on the weekends of July 15-16 and August 19-20.

This year we’ve encouraged artists to consider our anniversary theme,  Pause for a Moment and Reflect  as they prepare for your visit. Some 75 artists ready to show you what they’ve created.

The tour, as always, is a free event designed for the entire family. Studio visits encourage an open dialogue between you and the artist within their personal creative space. We think that connection is the key to developing a meaningful relationship with art, the artist and the creative process.

So, don’t be shy. Be curious and ask questions.

Remember that every studio and gallery is a unique experience. Consider planning a route that takes full advantage of your particular interests. To sketch out your adventure, please consider the C S A mobile app   – South Coast Artists.

It’s easily downloaded on your smartphone or tablet. It’s a free app that’s available through the Apple store   or on  Google Play .

This digital feature allows you to easily navigate from place to place, from artist to artist and from town to town.

Or, if you prefer, you can  pick up a brochure   from one of our many  Sponsor locations  and access all of this information,  on our website .

As president of SCA, I would like to thank you for taking the time to visit the South Coast and our artist community.

Whether you are new to the area, or a veteran SCA art lover, know that lifelong friendships are created along the trail.

Be prepared for an unforgettable art adventure that you and your family will never forget. We look forward to seeing you.

Drawn to water: new bedford, south coast artists welcome visitors.

Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 // July/August 2022 , Wonderlust

south coast art tour

The South Coast has a number of self-guided studio tour options to punctuate summer weekends. The artist organized “South Coast Artists’ 19th Annual Open Studio Tour” happens on July 16 and 17 and again on August 20 and 21 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and includes over 30 artists in Westport, Dartmouth, Little Compton and Tiverton. The number of artists involved makes this arguably the largest open studio tour in the region and encompasses South Coast towns in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “The Art Drive” on August 5through 7 and running from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. is limited to Dartmouth and Westport and is a curated event.

The idea of these open studio tours is for audiences to have the pleasure of a summer road trip, intermittently stopping to see art. Presented at each location will often be the equivalent of a one-person show. I particularly like that a self-guided tour can be a great alternative to gallery openings for anyone with lingering pandemic concerns. Seeing art and artists in the environments where they create is interesting. These particular tours allow folks to enjoy South Coast scenery and speak with artists about their subject matter, specifically, the thinking and emotions behind their artwork.

Guests included Donald Glover, Barry Keoghan, Steven Yeun and Jaden Smith. Also on display are 20 pairs of the shoe style, including the original spring and summer 1989 flesh-colored suede boot, along with other Tabi pieces such as opera gloves and a T-shirt from summer 1991 with red footprints. And if your feet can’t have enough, the Maison Margiela store at the shopping center has an expanded selection of the Tabi available for purchase. 3333 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, maisonmargiela.com , southcoastplaza.com

(This was back when he dated Madonna.) The exhibition, which was curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian, features about 30 works from Basquiat that have rarely been on loan, and it also reunites groups of his work that haven’t been displayed together since their inception. (The Gagosian gallery presented three L.A. exhibitions with Basquiat during his lifetime.) The show is open through June 1. 456 N. Camden Drive, Beverly Hills, gagosian.com

Moscow - Russian Rivers and Waterways Port of Call

south coast art tour

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to or from St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow . This capital city of Russia was our last port on a river cruise tour, and we had about four days to see most of the highlights. Our first day we did an overview driving tour and rode the subway under the Mockba (Moscow) River to Red Square. The next day we toured the State Armory and the Kremlin.

These photos show some of the other highlights you can see with three or four days in Moscow .

The Northern River Terminal is located on the Moscow Canal in the northwest section of Moscow at the Khimki Reservoir.

Most river cruise ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg use the ship as a hotel while in Moscow. Because of traffic, it's often a long drive into the city, but the sights along the way are interesting, and you only have to unpack once for the river cruise.

View of Downtown Moscow from Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills is the best place to get a great panoramic view of Moscow. The Sparrow Hills overlook the Mockba River and are near Moscow State University.

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow was founded in 1524, and was once used as a sort of prison for the unwanted wives and sisters of the Tsars. Peter the Great sent both his first wife and his sister to Novodevichy. Since the convent had such famous nuns, it was very wealthy due to the many donations of the Tsars and their families. At one time in the 1700s, the cloister had over 36,000 serfs working in 36 villages. Novodevichy was ravaged by the French armies in 1812, but the brave nuns saved the buildings by disarming the fuses set to blow them up. The Soviets wanted to make the convent into a museum in the early 1920s, but it was again saved.

Novodevichy also has a cemetery with the graves of many famous Russians, including Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Raisa Gorbachev, and Yuri Nikulin.

View of the Mockba River in Moscow, Russia

The Mockba (Moscow) River runs into the Volga via the 79.5 mile long Moscow Canal.

River ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Baltic Waterways embark and disembark at the Northern River Terminal about an hour's drive from the city. The drive time can vary significantly in length because of the heavy Moscow traffic. The river looks peaceful here, as it winds around the cosmopolitan area of Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer (Cathedral of Christ the Savior) in Moscow

The Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, also known as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is the largest church in Russia, holding 10,000 worshipers.

The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built over 44 years to celebrate the 1812 victory over Napoleon. It was completed in 1883. Stalin had the church destroyed in 1931, but it was rebuilt using mostly private funds in 1999. The new church is a replica of the original. Note that it took 44 years the first time and only 4 years the second to complete the church! Isn't modern technology impressive.

One interesting tidbit is that it took three attempts to blow up the church in 1931. Stalin planned to build a huge Palace of the Soviets on the cleared land, but engineers determined that the land was too boggy. In the 60 years intervening, the space was used for a variety of things, including a year-round swimming pool!

Vendors' Market and Ski Jump at Sparrow Hills in Moscow

The panoramic view of Moscow from Sparrow Hills is a stopover for most tour groups, so we were not surprised to see a large number of vendors. The ski jump was a surprise, but Moscow gets very cold in winter, so winter sports are very popular. This ski jump is near Moscow State University and has a great view of the city. Seeing this ski jump reminded me of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, which also has a great view of that northern capital city.

Russian Soldiers' Memorial in Victory Park in Moscow

Matryoshka dolls for sale in moscow.

I thought this display of dolls was beautiful! The Matryoshka nesting dolls range in price from just a few dollars to thousands of dollars.

Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

This small band greeted us at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow. They played a variety of band music and made us all feel very welcome.

Grand Triumphal Arch Celebrates the Victory Over Napoleon in the War of 1812

This arch looks a little like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and it is located near the Victory Park Metro Station in Moscow.

This Grand Triumphal Arch is decorated with the coats of arms from the 48 Russian provinces. To celebrate the victory over France in the war of 1812, it also includes bas-reliefs of the "Expulsion of the French." The arch was originally built in 1834, but has only been on this site since 1968.

It is a little ironic that this arch resembles the Paris Arc de Triomphe , which Napoleon built between 1806 and 1836 to celebrate his French victories.

Moscow Metro Station at the Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square)

This station near Red Square has many statues honoring the workers of Russia.

Moscow Metro Station near Victory Park

The Metro in Moscow is one of its shining industrial achievements. Construction on the Metro was begun in 1931 and continues today. The system has over 165 stations and 155 miles of track. Over 9300 trains, traveling sometimes as fast as 56 mph, navigate the huge system each day. Almost 10 million people ride the Moscow Metro every day, which is more than the New York and London systems combined. We found the Metro to be very efficient, with trains arriving every few minutes.

Navigating the Metro system can be somewhat of a problem for non-Russian speaking riders. Most of the signage is in Cyrillic only, and the stations are quite large. Trying to find the correct exit while walking long distances underground can be challenging.

On our cruise tour, we rode the Metro as a group with our program director from near Victory Park under the Mockba River to Red Square. Several of the group ventured out on their own during our time in Moscow, and many rode the Metro. They all returned with stories of getting lost underground, but none seemed the worse for the experience, and they all loved telling the tales.

Red Square in Moscow

Red Square in Moscow is a must-see for visitors to the capital city of Russia.

The Kremlin in Moscow, Russia

The Kremlin is a favorite of Moscow tourists. Inside these walls are buildings for the government of Russia, cathedrals, and the wonderful State Armory museum.

Taras Bulba Restaurant in Moscow

We enjoyed a traditional Ukrainian lunch at this cute restaurant in Moscow before checking in at our hotel.

Buses Wait for Passengers Outside Museum

River cruise tour groups are usually divided into groups for the duration of the tour. Each group had their own bus when touring.

Military Airplanes at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow, Russia

Although much of the military museum was indoors, there was quite a collection of planes, helicopters, missile launchers, and tanks outside.

Foreign Ministry Building, One of Moscow's Seven Stalinist-Gothic Skyscrapers

Seven skyscrapers with layers giving them a "wedding cake" appearance dot the Moscow skyline. The style is considered Stalinist-Gothic.

Russian and American War Veterans at the Central Museum of Armed Forces

Meeting with some World War II Russian War veterans was a highlight of our day at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow.

Rocket Launchers and Missiles at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow

The inside of this museum is particularly impressive, but you will need a guide since all of the signage is only in Russian.

Old Arbat Pedestrian Shopping Area in Moscow

We all enjoyed exploring the shops on this mile-long pedestrian shopping area.

Food prices were high in the tourist attraction, with two small pizzas, two small beers, and a bottle of water at an outdoor cafe costing $40. Many of our group ate at the large McDonalds, where prices were more reasonable.

Female Cosmonaut Model at Star City Cosmonaut Training Center near Moscow

Female cosmonauts play an important role in the Russian space program. In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova from Yaroslavl was the first woman in space.

Souvenir Shop in Old Arbat Shopping Area in Moscow

The area of Old Arbat had many English signs to attract the tourist trade.

Centrifuge at Star City Outside Moscow, Russia

This 18 meter centrifuge is the world's largest. The centrifuge weighs over 30000 tons, and the maximum load is 30 G, but most tests are run at 3 or 4 G.

A centrifuge ride is the first test for a cosmonaut, whose entire training school takes from five to eight years. The centrifuge can simulate the extreme force of gravity that cosmonauts (and astronauts) face when going into space. A centrifuge training session lasts about 30 minutes, and the trainee experiences both the centrifugal force as well as the spin of the pod he/she is riding in. Just typing this makes me a little queasy!

Cosmonaut's Bathroom Facilities on First Space Flights at Star City

Just like in the USA, everyone who visits the Star City cosmonaut training center near Moscow wants to know how cosmonauts "go to the bathroom". They have more sophisticated equipment today, but this contraption from the early space flights is fairly self explanatory.

Star City Tank Used for Cosmonaut Weightlessness Training near Moscow

This 12-meter deep pool is used to simulate weightlessness training. The pool is flooded and the cosmonauts perform repair tasks on the model of the International Space Station. SCUBA diving underwater is very similar to the weightless experience the cosmonauts experience when working in outer space.

Mir Space Station Replica at Star City near Moscow

The original Mir disintegrated when it fell to earth in 2001. Mir, which means peace in Russian, was launched in 1986.

Marvel Paull with Statue of Yuri Gagarin at Star City near Moscow

Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, and the Star City Cosmonaut training center was named after him in 1968.

River Cruise Passengers with Yuri Onufrienko, Russian Cosmonaut at Star City

In case you can't tell, Yuri is the one in the middle. My famous traveling mother, Marvel Paull, is on the left and Dick, a cruise friend is on the right.

A highlight of our day in Star City was a visit with Yuri Onufrienko , a Russian cosmonaut who spent extended time in space at the Mir space station in 1996 and the International Space Station in 2001-2002. Yuri patiently took many questions from our small inquisitive group.

Cosmonaut Space Suit at Star City near Moscow

Cosmonauts sit in this position on take off. Thanks to Jerry G. for the tip about the sign. It says, "Don't touch!"

Stained Glass Window at Star City near Moscow

Program directors at farewell dinner in moscow.

After 16 days of discovery, learning, and fun, we had a farewell dinner with the six Program Directors - Evgeny, Olga, Vladimir, Svetlana, Violetta, and Marina - in Moscow.

The Kremlin is a triangular, walled citadel in the center of Moscow. The Kremlin is considered by most to be the heart of the city. First conceived in the 12th century, the Kremlin (which means fortress) was expanded by Tsar Ivan III (Ivan the Great) during the 15th century. His architects designed the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace, and the Kremlin was an interesting mix of both Russian and Renaissance styles. During the Soviet time of the 1930s, many of the Kremlin buildings were destroyed or vandalized, and the complex remained closed to the public until 1955.

Today the Kremlin is home to the Russian President and his administration. Many buildings are open to the public, but you may need to be with a guide (check in advance).

I visited the Kremlin when in Moscow on a Russian Waterways cruise tour from St. Petersburg.

The Kremlin was also one of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Red Square in Moscow, Russia

Red Square's name has nothing to do with Communism or Soviet Russia. The old Russian word for "beautiful" and "red" was the same; the square was supposed to be called "Beautiful Square". Red Square has been the center of Moscow activity since the 16th century when the Tsar cleared the area and allowed vendors, shoppers, and businesses to fill the square. Today this square is surrounded by the Moscow Kremlin, the State Historical Museum, GUM Shopping Mall , and St. Basil's Cathedral .

Many of the important events of the last three hundred years in Russia have been marked by parades or demonstrations in Red Square. Anyone who enters Red Square will have memories from TV or movie reels of this magnificent public square. Those of us who grew up during the Cold War era can remember the parades of soldiers, tanks, and other armaments past Lenin's Tomb just outside the Kremlin Wall. The World War II generation remembers Red Square as the site of a huge victory celebration at the end of the war.

Solar eclipse live: Watch live coverage from path of totality

south coast art tour

[See eclipse livestream below]

On Monday, millions of people across the United States will get to see a rare total solar eclipse , the first in the U.S. since 2017 and the last until 2044.

And millions of others who aren't in the path of totality will see a partial solar eclipse .

Depending on where you are will determine how much of the sun will be covered by the moon. Those along the path of totality — which stretches from northern Mexico into Texas, the Midwest and East Coast and, finally, southeast Canada before moving out to sea, according to  NASA — will see a total solar eclipse, in which the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes.

In Jacksonville and across Northeast Florida, about 62% of the sun will be obscured.

What time does the eclipse start in Jacksonville?

In Jacksonville, the eclipse will begin at 1:47 p.m. and continue to 4:19 p.m. At its peak at 3:05 p.m., about 64% of the sun will be obscured by the moon. ( Search eclipse times by ZIP code .)

Solar eclipse live: Watch a livestream from the path of totality

So if you want to experience the total solar eclipse from the path of totality, you'll want to follow USA TODAY's livestream of the eclipse as it moves across the country.

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

A solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon: it won't happen again in the U.S. again for another 20 years, on Aug. 23, 2044. Even then, its path of totality will stretch across Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota — hundreds of miles northwest from Monday’s eclipse path.

So grab your eclipse glasses and head outside to view it. And view the live stream to see what really makes a solar eclipse so special.

🐓 SOUTH CAROLINA — UNBEATEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

With undefeated South Carolina jolted onto an unfamiliar backfoot, coach Dawn Staley looked toward her bench to remedy an early 11-point deficit to Iowa — more specifically, she looked toward Tessa Johnson.

The freshman guard outshone her six-point scoring average all tournament long and was a revelation in relief for the Gamecocks. With a team-high 19 points and three triples, Johnson led South Carolina to a slim halftime lead and a dominant third quarter, helping the Gamecocks claim their second national title in three years, 87-75, and cap off a perfect season.

The role players were rolling from the opening tip, as Kate Martin and Sydney Affolter gave Iowa a quick 7-0 lead, but Caitlin Clark scored 13 in a row from all over the court. The newly crowned AP Player of the Year drained a pair of 3s, was fouled on two more attempts and converted at the rim to give her Hawkeyes a 20-9 lead by the first media timeout. Clark finished with 30 points (10 of 28 shooting), eight rebounds and five assists in her last college game.

Iowa's centers Hannah Stuelke and Addison O'Grady admirably limited star Gamecock post Cardoso to just 2 of 6 shooting in the first quarter, but the Brazilian behemoth partnered with Johnson and inevitably found her opening. Johnson — who led the Gamecocks' 36-0 bench scoring advantage — took up the mantle for South Carolina and its top-ranked defense. The freshman guard poked away a pair of steals, turning each into transition baskets, before Cardoso finished through contact to tie the game at 27.

That top-ranked defense also took exception to Clark's early mastery, and a savvy defensive play from Raven Johnson dispossessed Clark and gave the Gamecocks an easy two points before halftime.

South Carolina bottled up this late-half momentum for a roaring start out of the locker room. Chloe Kitts ensured her spot on the floor with two straight baskets out of the intermission, and Te-Hina Paopao nailed a pull-up jumper to give her Gamecocks a 55-46 lead and force Iowa coach Lisa Bluder to burn a quick timeout.

Cardoso also hauled a career-high 17 rebounds, leading an overwhelming South Carolina rebounding effort that started to wear on the Hawkeyes. The Gamecocks enjoyed a 24-11 rebounding advantage in the second half, including six offensive boards, and a plus-6 advantage in second chance points helped South Carolina maintain its lead.

Paopao nailed a 3 to begin the fourth quarter, one of her three long-range bombs Sunday, and a familiarly balanced South Carolina scoring attack — seven Gamecocks made at least three field goals — proved too much for a late Hawkeyes rally.

🗣️ South Carolina closing in on national title, perfect season

The Gamecocks can taste it! After a valiant Iowa fightback cut the Hawkeye deficit to just four, a measured response from South Carolina saw the Gamecocks back up 10 after a Raven Johnson free throw with just 90 seconds to go.

Iowa will look for a miracle comeback, while South Carolina looks for the finishing touches on a 38-0 season.

🚨 Five minutes remaining: Iowa eyeing comeback

➡️ into the 4th: south carolina leads by nine, 🚫 danger zone: south carolina extends lead into double figures.

While the Hawkeyes have hung around admirably throughout the third quarter, an emphatic South Carolina run has the Gamecocks threatening to pull away inside the final 11 minutes.

Caitlin Clark curbed a tough shooting quarter with a gusty take to the rim, pulling her Hawkeyes within just two, but South Carolina then launched a 3-point shooting barrage. Ashlyn Watkins started the run with a conversion at the rim, but Tessa Johnson and Bree Hall connected from long range to cap off the 8-0 run.

Johnson continued a stellar afternoon — her 15 points lead the Gamecocks — with a 3-pointer from the left corner, and South Carolina grew its lead to 68-57 with just over a minute left in the third quarter.

💥 Third-quarter explosion: South Carolina roars out of halftime

After putting a pesky NC State squad away Friday with a dominant 29-6 third quarter, South Carolina looks on course for a similar surge out of the locker room. Chloe Kitts, who was limited to just nine minutes, ensured her spot on the floor with two straight baskets out of the intermission, and Te-Hina Paopao nailed a pull-up jumper to give her Gamecocks a 55-46 lead and force Iowa coach Lisa Bluder to burn a quick timeout.

🚧 Defense to offense: Raven Johnson ends half with big steal and score

In a high-scoring affair that saw each team threatening to crack 50 points, it was ultimately a key defensive play that gave South Carolina some rare separation and a jolt of momentum heading into the locker room.

Caitlin Clark sauntered up the floor with the ball and a chance to give her Hawkeyes a slim lead entering halftime, but the superstar was ultimately dispossessed by Raven Johnson, who flew down the floor uncontested and converted a layup. Johnson's bucket gave South Carolina a 49-46 lead, erasing a Hawkeye advantage as large as 11.

Here's a look at the complete halftime breakdown for both sides — and stay tuned for a thrilling second half:

😵‍💫 Back and forth: Iowa, South Carolina trade punches into second quarter

After a 7-0 burst from South Carolina leveled the game at 27, the teams have traded haymakers in a thrilling start to the second quarter.

Tessa Johnson and Kamilla Cardoso have shouldered the second quarter load for the Gamecocks, scoring all but two of South Carolina's points in the period, and a pair of baskets at the rim for the Brazilian star sandwiched a Tessa triple and gave South Carolina a 36-34 lead.

Iowa punched right back, however, as Hannah Stuelke handled a beautiful feed from Caitlin Clark and finished through contact, giving her Hawkeyes a narrow lead entering the second quarter media timeout.

😤 Tessa takeover: Johnson helps pull the Gamecocks level

👏 to their feet: cleveland crowd applauds clark's magnificent first quarter.

After corralling a loose ball to close out the first 10 minutes, Caitlin Clark received a rousing ovation from a partisan Hawkeye crowd after a nearly flawless first quarter. Clark finished the period with 18 points, including a deep, contested 3-pointer to send Iowa into the first quarter break with a 27-20 lead.

Kate Martin also contributed an impressive seven-point performance, and Iowa centers Hannah Stuelke and Addison O'Grady have done excellent work containing star Gamecock post Kamilla Cardoso to just 2 of 6 from the field.

🔥 She's on fire: Clark scores 13 by first media timeout

Caitlin Clark has clearly shaken off her Rust Belt rust since arriving in Cleveland, as after a slow start in Friday's national semifinal the Hawkeye megastar has been nearly flawless against South Carolina.

The role players were rolling from the opening tip, as Kate Martin and Sydney Affolter gave Iowa a quick 7-0 lead, but Clark has scored Iowa's last 13 from all over the court. The newly crowned AP Player of the Year drained a pair of 3s, was fouled on two more attempts and converted at the rim to give her Hawkeyes a 20-9 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

🚨 Live in Cleveland: Iowa-South Carolina underway

One of the most anticipated championship bouts in women's college basketball history is officially underway, as South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso won the opening tip and her Gamecocks secured the first possession. The NCAA.com team is live in Cleveland for up-to-the-minute  updates on stats, scores and more , so make sure to follow along all day long.

🤩 All eyes on her: Crowd greets Caitlin Clark ahead of national championship

What projects to be a partisan Iowa crowd made their presence felt more than two hours before tip-off Sunday, as thousands lined up around Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse to catch a glimpse of star Hawkeye Caitlin Clark entering the arena.
