Summary [ ]

Contents [ ].

An A-Z encyclopedia covering subjects from Andorians to Zefram Cochrane to Atoz , the Star Trek Encyclopedia was compiled by Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager staffers Denise and Michael Okuda . With artwork from, among others, Doug Drexler , it includes summaries of all episodes, descriptions of all characters, rundowns of all locations, data on all lifeforms , and details on all starships that appeared in the Star Trek universe.

Articles generally comprise one or two paragraphs. Some contain behind-the-scenes information, annotated in italicized fonts to distinguish them from the in-universe approach of the work. Many also feature images created specifically for the Encyclopedia , including shots of barely visible starships like the Saber -class and Norway -class vessels, and a photograph of Cochrane's statue.

Background information [ ]

Editions [ ].

  • The first edition of the Encyclopedia was published in black and white, and in both hardcover and softcover formats. It contained material from Star Trek: The Original Series , the first six Star Trek movies , Star Trek: The Next Generation to the end of season 6, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 1 . This edition was translated into German (1995, published by Heel ) and Japanese (1998, by Japan Mix, Inc. as Volume V in their so-called " Star Trek Academic Research " series).
  • Doug Drexler noted " the Encyclopedia was a fantastic learning experience for me. I learned to do computer graphics while working on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , but I learned to illustrate on the computer while doing the first edition of the Encyclopedia. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 22 , p. 88)
  • The second edition saw the Encyclopedia published in full color. It was only published in hardcover format. It added information from TNG Season 7 , Star Trek Generations , Star Trek: First Contact , Deep Space Nine to partway through season 5 , and Star Trek: Voyager to partway through season 3 .
  • The third edition of the Encyclopedia retained the full-color format, and had both hardcover and softcover releases (similar to the first edition of the Encyclopedia ). However, this edition took a different approach to its update – which covered Star Trek: Insurrection , Deep Space Nine to partway through season 7 (but with main character details covering the final episodes) and Voyager to partway through season 5 – as it was provided in a 128-page appendix to the second edition material. This was a cost-saving measure, as integrating this information alphabetically into the existing material of the second edition would have resulted in a greater publishing expense and thus a higher price. This edition was released in hardcover in Japanese and Italian (translated from English by Massimiliano Antonioli for Fanucci Editore as the Enciclopedia ufficiale di Star Trek ). Both of these editions contained fifty pages of additional material over their English-language source publication.
  • In the lead up to the third edition's release, the Okudas spoke with Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 4 , pp. 90-91, on their process for researching entry information, including an 18-page form of questions for each episode. Denise Okuda framed how researching the book changed their approach to watching Star Trek , " when you sit down and you watch an episode for pleasure, it's an entertainment, but we treat the episodes as research. You can't just watch an episode, you have to look at it with certain eyes. " Mike Okuda noted: " the [third edition] is essentially the 1997 edition. What Pocket said was, 'We want to come out with the trade edition,' and to their considerable credit they said they wanted to bring it out as low a price point as possible. The hardback edition was beautiful, but it was a little pricey. So they basically left the 1997 edition untouched and added 96 [sic.] pages. by doing that they kept the price down. "
  • All hardback versions of the first three editions, regardless in which language they were released, were issued with dust jackets.
  • The fourth edition of the Encyclopedia , released in October 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek , is comprised of two hardcover volumes, without dust jackets, in a hardboard slipcase. Produced by becker&mayer! and published by HarperCollins Publishers , this new, entirely revised edition – the first in seventeen years – includes three hundred new pages covering the remainder of the last season of Deep Space Nine , the remaining three seasons of Voyager , the entirety of Star Trek: Enterprise , and Star Trek Nemesis , as well as incorporating information derived from the first two alternate reality movies, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness – not as a separate appendix as reported prior to the release; entries pertaining to the alternate universe are addended with an "*". (introduction; [1] )
  • That a fourth print edition had even been commissioned came as much as a surprise to its authors as it had been to fans ; " Ever since 1999, one of the questions we've heard most often from fans has been, "When will there be a new edition of The Star Trek Encyclopedia ?" The truth was that the book industry has changed a lot and we feared that with each passing year, a new edition was becoming increasingly unlikely. We really had no idea of when (or if) it could ever happen. You can imagine our shock and delight when John Van Citters of CBS Consumer Products and Dana Youlin of becker&meyer! told us that Harper Collins had stepped up to the plate to take on this challenge ," the elated authors stated in the introduction.
  • Okuda has indicated the fourth edition, which only had a small print run, is likely the final version, in part because "the economics of the book industry no longer support such works." [2] [3]
  • While many illustrations pertaining to contents already covered in the previous edition were ported over, many were also replaced with new imagery for the new edition. Especially noteworthy were the starship images, originally done as graphics by Doug Drexler, that were now replaced by CGI imagery as originally constructed by Fabio Passaro for the British Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection partwork publication, for whom Mike Okuda has volunteered consultancy services. Passaro and his consigner Ben Robinson (project manager of the "Collection") have been dutifully acknowledged in the new edition.

Content compilation [ ]

  • The Encyclopedia was essentially a byproduct from the extensive research the authors had already performed for the Star Trek Chronology , the first edition of which was published one year prior to that of the Encyclopedia . " We again worked by episode, but used the scripts as a reference tool (once they were matched to the aired version of the episode). We catalogued terms, not just chronological data. We did the chronology for the sake of the chronology...it was only afterwards that the idea for the encyclopedia came up. ", original co-author Debbie Mirek clarified. [4] Still, while the Encyclopedia has been updated, it remains unlikely the Chronology source publication will receive a similar treatment, and the Okudas implicitly conceded this, as, starting with the third edition, the Encyclopedia incorporated updated, albeit severely truncated, three-page Star Trek time-line appendices.
  • As with its progenitor, Star Trek: The Animated Series , which was considered non- canon at the time of writing the Encyclopedia , was not referenced. Mirek commented, regarding the Animated Series : " I am not really sure why it was discounted. I believe Roddenberry did not like the animated series, and Michael, who respected the man enormously, valued his opinion. Gene was largely out of the loop for TNG, in my opinion, so what happened with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and onward, shouldn't be attributed to him. Mike worked on all those films, and they have to be recognized as part of the "universe". " [5] Even though the official franchise has since then elevated The Animated Series to canon, Okuda has maintained his stance for the 2016 fourth edition, as stated in that edition's introduction and despite remaining an Animated Series fan himself.
  • As of 2002, the official Star Trek franchise treats the Chronology , the Encyclopedia , and the 1991 Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (co-written by Mike Okuda) as the sole primary reference sources (beyond the episodes/movies themselves) for all subsequent in-universe reference works ; as such, these three works are elevated to the status of "quasi-canon". Licensed works of this kind – such as the later GE Fabbri , Haynes Publishing , and Eaglemoss Collections (publisher of the aforementioned Starships Collection ) Star Trek publications – are required to be in concordance with the information contained within these three works, with the Okuda author couple not rarely assigned to these later publications as "technical consultants" to ensure compliance. As a consequence, all previously licensed reference works written from an in-universe perspective were no longer considered official references – most notably Franz Joseph 's Star Fleet Technical Manual as well as Shane Johnson 's Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise and Worlds of the Federation – and no information from these was taken into account in either the Encyclopedia or the Chronology . Labeled "unofficial", these works were de facto debunked and demoted by the franchise to the apocryphal status of novels, comics, non-production art (such as Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars ), and (computer) games. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 11 , p. 71) Greg Jein 's " The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship " article, written as a fan two decades earlier, was the only unofficial source acknowledged in the Encyclopedia (1994, p. 57; 1999, pp. 85-86). The Constitution -class registries in the Encyclopedia are largely based on this article, starting their journey to elevation into canon.
  • Though for the most part adhering to what was canonically established, there was some conjecture included in the Encyclopedia , as the authors made several references to material that was never explicitly noted in canon (i.e. made up exclusively for the Encyclopedia ) or that came from unspecified materials that have yet to be identified on screen. The vast majority of these references were the registries, class designations, and some of the classes themselves assigned to Federation starships which were identified on screen by name only, be it orally or visually. Classes noted as conjectural are listed below.
  • While the authors had incorporated some conjectural historical information in their earlier Chronology , mostly pertaining to early non-canonically established Star Trek history, they refrained from including most of that information in the Encyclopedia , strictly adhering to what was established on screen. However, there were two noticeable exceptions; the designs of the SS Valiant and the Daedalus -class of which Jein had built reference models for representation in the Chronology . Both were also visually represented in the Encyclopedia , as Okuda and Drexler championed their elevation into canon, that of the Daedalus -class in particular. The latter at least managed to make on-screen appearances as a display model , though the link between class-name and appearance remained unestablished. See Daedalus class model for further information.
  • Memory Alpha was not used for research when compiling the 2016 edition, the authors citing integrity reasons: " Any mistakes have to be our mistakes ". [6]
  • There are indeed a few errors still in existence here and there in the 2016 edition. For example, at least two errors exist in the illustrated table for the various shuttlecraft. The in-universe date of the production of the very first shuttle for the Enterprise -D is the same year as that of a shuttle featured in Star Trek V , which is questionable since TNG starts 78 years later. A typo is present regarding the last shuttlecraft at the bottom of the page, for Star Trek: Voyager – the year has been given five digits. A few errors detected elsewhere also, including the mention of an appearance of a Ferengi Marauder vessel in the TNG episode " Rascals ", which is not the case. No such vessel was featured in that episode – the Ferengi "pirates" arrived on board an apparently stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey.

Canonized content [ ]

Various okudagrams that appeared onscreen, notably in DS9, VOY, and ENT, were sourced directly from the pages of the Encyclopedia with, in most cases, only minimal alterations:

  • In VOY : " The Killing Game ", much of the entry for " Kathryn Janeway " (3rd ed., pp. 218-219) appeared onscreen, being reviewed by Karr .
  • In VOY : " Vis à Vis ", much of the entry for " Thomas Paris " (3rd ed., pp. 347-348) appeared onscreen, being reviewed by Steth .
  • In VOY : " Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy ", portions of the Federation Judicial Code that appeared on screen were lifted directly from the entries for " Starfleet General Orders and Regulations " (3rd ed., p. 468) and " Stocker " (3rd ed., p. 278).

Star Trek Encyclopedia

The Star Trek Encyclopedia A Reference Guide to the Future , Revised and Expanded Edition 2-Volume Hardcover Set By Michael Okuda, Denise Okuda Publisher: Harper Design Release Date: October 18, 2016

A well-stocked English-language home library likely contains such reference books as The Merriam-Webster Dictionary , Roget’s International Thesaurus , Strunk & White’s Elements of Style , Encyclopedia of World History , and Oxford’s Atlas of the World . Now, it’s time to make room on that shelf for the newly Revised and Expanded Edition of The Star Trek Encyclopedia , released by Harper Design in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek .

Authors Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda originally created The Star Trek Encyclopedia back in 1994, packing it with references to all the Star Trek television series and films up until that point. (You might remember the authors from their contributions to the Bonus Features on several Trek television series DVDs, especially the 2006 remastered Original Series .) The book was eventually reprinted in 1997, and in 1999, an Updated and Expanded Edition added in a 128-page addendum to include information through the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the fifth season of the Star Trek: Voyager television series, as well as the film Star Trek: Insurrection .

But a lot has happened in the Star Trek franchise in the past 17 years, such as the end of Voyager , the creation of the Star Trek: Enterprise television series, the tenth feature film Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), and of course, the reboot of the entire Trek universe starting with director J.J. Abrams’ 2009 feature film Star Trek , followed up with 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness , and continuing with this year’s Star Trek Beyond . Except for Beyond , information on everything else is now included and collated into the new Revised and Expanded 2-volume hardcover set, which, by the way, is fully authorized.

If you’re in my age group (too young for the debut of Star Trek: The Original Series , but old enough to be there for the launch of The Next Generation ), then you likely had a set of encyclopedias in your home to help you out with all of your term papers. And you’ll remember what it was like to have to grab a heavy volume off the shelf — well, this new The Star Trek Encyclopedia , which is housed in a beautifully designed slipcover, reminded me of that, because it is heavy . For any Trek fan, having this glorious set in your collection will be amazing. As much as you think you know about Star Trek , you will soon discover that there’s so much more.

I own the 1999 expanded edition paperback, and it’s something I’ve referred back to many times over the years, so I’m used to its layout and design. The new set is very similar in layout, with each page containing entries for characters’ name, episode titles, weapons, planets, and much more, accompanied by a description, and then full-color images and illustrations peppered throughout. But, the typeface is now smaller, and to my aging eyes, I found that that was something I had to get used to at first. This isn’t the type of book that you’d read straight through cover-to-cover, but rather by skipping through portions to find what you’re looking for, so the smaller text likely won’t cause a problem. (It was more difficult, though, in the Introduction, which has nothing to break up the text.)

It’s obvious right away how much more this new collection contains and perhaps the text size was decreased to avoid having to make a third volume, since this new edition now has over 1,000 pages spread out over two textbook-sized books and has even more photos of characters, props, and scenery, and illustrations of ships, weapons, and more. There’s also a lot of cross-referencing; for instance, when you get to “Planets,” there’s several pages of various planets, stars, and other celestial objects, along with its description, and the episode or film in which it makes an appearance. The second volume has appendices for starships, historical events, a timeline, writer and director credits, cast appendix, bibliography, and an About The Authors.

There is no other book that comes close to housing the knowledge of the vast and ever-expanding Star Trek like this Encyclopedia . Go ahead and look, but you won’t find it. This 2-volume tome even has an entry on Abraham Lincoln, who made an appearance in “The Savage Curtain,” a late third season episode of the original television series. It truly has everything (ok, almost everything — there was no time to get Star Trek Beyond in this set). The Star Trek Encyclopedia will keep you busy for days and weeks and possibly for life as you undoubtedly look back on it over time, and it makes a perfect edition to every SciFi geek’s library.

The list price is $150, but Amazon currently has it at a discounted price of $88.40, so if you’re planning on giving this as a gift this holiday season, you might want to get in it now while the price is lower.

Recently viewed, grading system.

Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection.

Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, "SW (NM)" means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition.

Perfect. Brand new.

Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board & war games in this condition will show very little to no wear and are considered to be punched unless the condition note says unpunched.

Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

Very Good. Used. May have medium-sized creases, corner dings, minor tears or scuff marks, small stains, etc. Complete and very useable.

Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, etc.

  • Boxed items are listed as "code/code" where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. When only one condition is listed, then the box and contents are in the same condition.
  • A "plus" sign indicates that an item is close to the next highest condition. Example, EX+ is an item between Excellent and Near Mint condition. A "minus" sign indicates the opposite.
  • Major defects and/or missing components are noted separately.
  • Boardgame counters are punched, unless noted. Due to the nature of loose counters, if a game is unplayable it may be returned for a refund of the purchase price.
  • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
  • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "card worn."
  • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "tray worn."
  • Remainder Mark - A remainder mark is usually a small black line or dot written with a felt tip pen or Sharpie on the top, bottom, side page edges and sometimes on the UPC symbol on the back of the book. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.

The Star trek saga now spans a half-century since Roddenberry's original series hit the airwaves in 1966. It's hard to keep track of everything happening in the richly detailed television series and feature films, and this classic encyclopedia has finally been updated and expanded to include everything from The Mantrap to J.J. Abram's Kelvin Timeline.

INTERVIEW: Denise and Mike Okuda Discuss Latest Version of The Star Trek Encyclopedia

star trek encyclopedia 5th edition

| November 21, 2016 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 18 comments so far

The fourth revision of the Star Trek Encyclopedia written by the husband/wife duo Mike and Denise Okuda, is a massive two-volume hardcover edition. This latest revision includes information up to Star Trek: Into Darkness , and took several years to compile. Read on for our interview with the Trekspert couple.

“They say time is the fire in which we burn. Right now, Captain, my time is running out. We leave so many things unfinished in our lives.” – Soran, Star Trek: Generations

Four times Denise and Mike Okuda have been tasked with writing and updating the Star Trek Encyclopedia , the complete guide to the Final Frontier. Each time they continued their mission of chronicling Gene Roddenberry’s universe, they always had to leave it unfinished. While the fourth edition is an immense tome and published as a two-volume hardcover with slipcase for each book, it still remains something that is unfinished. While completist might look at this as the glass is half full, the optimist will note that this means 50 years after its debut, new Star Trek is still being made.

st-encyclopedia-vulcans

Compiling 50 years of information takes some time: “It took about two years to complete,” Denise said. “The way we approach any of the books is as a research project. Just like you would in college, we had a methodology. We started by going out into the garage, taking scripts out of their waterproof bins, and laying them all out across the floor chronologically. We knew where we left off from the 1999 supplement, took shooting scripts and corrected to air, which was daunting. You have the script, and sit there and watch the episode, start and stop, correct the page. It was very clear this was going to have to be a two-volume set. Honestly, it’s a blur.”

“We actually started work as we were finishing up the remastered TNG,” Mike added. “Almost literally the next day we started cramming on the book. We thought how much fun it would be to sit back, watch Star Trek, and take notes. How can that be work? But after the first 10 minutes, it was incredibly tedious. We realized we can not possibly do this on our own. CBS’s John Van Citters and Marian Cordry offered to help. They both literally took home scripts and worked on them at night. We couldn’t have met the schedule without their efforts.”

Readers might assume that the fourth time out for the Okudas would be a cakewalk; after all, their previous three editions went right up to the final season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the fifth season of Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Generations . Not the case.  The previous information needed to be integrated into the new edition, which now includes entries on the final two seasons of Voyager , all of Star Trek: Enterprise and the feature films produced after Generations .

The previous Encyclopedia revision from 1999

“Each edition has its own challenges,” Mike explained. “The last time, we had a full-time day job working on two-weekly television shows [DS9 and VOY]. You think it would be easier this time, but for some reason it was not.”

Thoroughness is something fans have come to expect from the Okudas, and they will not be disappointed. Items readers can expect to find in the Encyclopedia include full-color maps of quadrants, episode listings, full-color Starfleet and alien uniforms, as well real-life terms and related historical events. Plus, fans can also expect listings for the Kelvin Timeline. “The Kelvin Timeline is a legitimate part of the Star Trek universe,” Mike asserts.

“It was quite a quandary to incorporate the Kelvin Universe,” Denise added. “First of all, there was no name. We put a list together and worked with John [Van Citters] at CBS; so now it has a definable name.”

“It actually took quite a while to figure out,” Mike said about the official designation of J.J. Abrams’ new universe. “We went back and watched the film to find what they called this universe.”

Decisions needed to be made regarding which information independent of the franchise should be included. Character entries include actor info, including other roles those actors might have played in the Star Trek franchise. But there are no separate listings within the Encyclopedia of the actors themselves, so don’t bother searching for Karl Urban or DeForest Kelley.

st-encyclopedia-kirk

“We did occasionally break the fourth wall when we included the actor’s name,” Mike stated. “But actor biographies are not part of the Star Trek universe. We do have an appendix where you can look up an actor’s name and see if they played any other roles in Star Trek.”

Photographs were selected by CBS’s Marian Cordry, while Holly Amos assisted her in pulling those photos from rows and rows of binders in CBS’s archive. Not every listing has a photograph with it, which is consistent with previous editions, as the Okudas were given a page limit they had to abide by.

“The proposal was to make it a certain size,” Mike explained. “But we kept saying we had to add this, and this. From the very beginning CBS and Harper Collins (the publisher) understood it was an encyclopedia. They knew it would be an enormous job. They expanded the book to two volumes, and they pushed the schedule a lot for us, and were incredibly tolerant with us asking to put [more] things in.”

Carrying a high price point, some fans may decide not to purchase the Encyclopedia and just rely on websites for Star Trek history. But it’s important to note that all of those posts are done by fans, and while the Okudas are fans themselves, they have also been a professional part of the franchise dating back to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Their attention to detail and the information they are able to include from being first-hand witnesses puts this a step above online resources.

“Adjusted for inflation, the new two-volume hardcover set is about the same price as the 1999 edition, and it’s got a lot more in it,” Denise pointed out. “Also, if there was a question, we could go back to the call sheets, scripts, memos, etc. We often smile at each other. Both of us love Star Trek and have never stopped working on Star Trek.”

There’s also something to be said for the physicality of a book in your hands: “Absolutely nothing against online references,” Mike said. “But there is a certain charm to being able to watch Star Trek , flip through the book, immerse yourself in the details, characters and stories you love.  It’s a fun way to look at the show. We’re very proud of the work, and not just because we love Star Trek.”

There is no rest for the weary as the Okudas move from one Star Trek project to the next, with detours in between (including Mike working on the feature film Sully ). After going from TNG Remastered episodes to producing the Encyclopedia , it was on to producing the upcoming  Roddenberry Vault  Blu-ray set, where the couple was responsible for cataloging all the found footage.

“We literally turned in the last piece of the Encyclopedia and two days later I was working on Sully ,” Mike said.

“Our heart keeps coming back to Star Trek,” Denise added.

“So far we’ve been lucky,” Mike finished.

Unfortunately, Star Trek: Beyond was still filming when the Star Trek Encyclopedia was sent to the printers and Star Trek: Discovery had just been announced, so neither had entries in this fourth edition. Looks like the Okudas still have a journey to continue, and a fifth edition to produce one day.

“ … Time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment.” – Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: Generations

Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Tries Too Many Connections In “Jinaal”

Awesome!..So much has happened since 1999! I wish it could have included Beyond, but hey I can wait for the 5th edition!

I bought two copies. One to read and one to keep as a collectible. It is very well done, except I would have probably taken a different approach to the Kelvin universe. They seem to imply that things before the Narada arrived could be altered also. I choose to believe that everything prior to that event is the same as the prime universe.

I used to think that nothing pre-Narada could be altered either, but after Simon Pegg’s comments during Beyond it made sense, pre 2233 is impacted by whether the prime universe characters travel back in time and make slight alterations to the timeline (“City on the Edge” and “Tomorrow is Yesterday”are just the beginning, this goes through 24th century Trek. For example, Wrath of Khan doesn’t happen in the Kelvin timeline so Kirk doesn’t go back to save the whales, so there are some alterations….

Outstanding book! You could slip it into the middle of a set of World Book Encyclopedias and not notice the difference.

Memory Alpha is handy and all, but there’s no replacing a good hardbound book. Very highly recommended.

I remember buying the very first edition. I was SO proud of owning that book lol. Today the internet has changed a lot of things (clearly as I type on a Trek site) and the appeal of coffee tables books like this are becoming less relevant but I’m so happy to see the Okudas still providing such a great source for Trek fans everywhere. They are truly fans of this show and live and breath Trek. These books show it not to mention all their work on the shows.

I plan to buy myself a copy soon. It looks exceptional. And with the fifth edition will get Beyond, Discovery and MAYBE(?) another film included. As long as Trek keep going we should keep getting editions.

Well, i know what I am going to get for myself as a birthday present next month…

It’s a total waste of money. They didn’t fix a single mistake from the previous 3rd edition, not even the most blatant ones.

I was wondering about those past goofs too and if they were addressed. Thanks for the info, turned it from a ‘probably not’ into a definite ‘no.’

How bad are the mistakes? I had the original edition when I was a kid, but I don’t remember if I came across any goofs.

Elaborate on the mistakes, please.

Well, the most glaring errors are in the insignia section where they feature completely incorrect rank insignia for the TWOK-era.

TMP is still set in 2271 even though 2273 makes more sense in light of VGR Q2

More mistakes concerning ship classes and registries are addressed here: http://flare.solareclipse.net/ultimatebb.php/topic/6/2821.html

Thanks. I’m still going to get the book, chuck up the mistakes as something caused by some sort of “temporal incursion”. ;-)

I’ll live. I never cared about stuff like that, couldnt tell you anything about it. I like just the bigger canon stuff but its fine if you are put off by it.

@ Cody Agreed, I’m no fan of the Okudas either, for their changing of class names, like Glenn class {after John Glenn} =Oberth or Avenger class heavy frigate =Miranda. Etcetara …..Not going to buy.

the Okudas are brilliant. am always checking their text commentaries on the blu rays.

Mistakes from earlier editions not corrected. Animated series not included yet they included some things only mentioned in the animated series. Disappointing.

Happy 20th, First Contact

Mike, & Denise, You guys rock!!! Keep up the good work. All my best – X

Description

A must have for hardcore fans we have owned a few versions of its predecessors. This is what we learnt about the latest version from a panel with the authors Michael and Denise Okuda at Star Trek Las Vegas:

“‘The Beast’ as its known weighs a whooping 11 pounds and took years for the Okuda’s to rewrite plus add an additional 300 pages! They created a key to separate the prime and Kelvin timeline whilst stressing that they wanted to give importance to both timelines.

Interesting fact; the term ‘Kelvin Timeline’ which has seemingly appeared from no-where, was coined by the Michael and Denise Okuda. They were originally considering the name ‘Spock Timeline’ but it wasn’t specific enough. The USS Kelvin incident was the starting point for the timeline, and thus got the name. We salute Michael and Denise for their contribution and dedication to the encyclopaedia and particularly their stance on the Kelvin Timeline. We do feel that it needs more equality in its contribution to Star Trek particularly for it’s celebration of Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary.”

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the classic show, a fully authorized revision of the popular reference companion: a two-volume encyclopedia featuring a completely new design, stunning new full-color photographs and illustrations, and 300 pages of new entries, packaged in a specially designed and shrink-wrapped deluxe slipcase.

When it debuted in 1966, the Star Trek series quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, inspiring six spin-off series and thirteen films—including Star Trek Beyond, opening July 22, 2016—as well as books, comics, games, toys, and more. One of the largest franchises of all time, Star Trek’s overall box office revenue totals more than $1.93 billion to date.

Since it’s initial publication twenty-five years ago, The Star Trek Encyclopedia has been the go-to source for everything related to the franchise’s canon. Packed with highly detailed information, including brief episode and film synopses, no other book has come close to offering the same wealth of insight into the Star Trek universe. Now, The Star Trek Encyclopedia has been thoroughly revised and redesigned for a new generation of fans. This updated and expanded edition includes 300 more pages, information, photographs and illustrations, and offers exhaustively researched and detailed entries on the characters, ships, and events from the last fifteen years of Star Trek television shows and films, including Star Trek: Voyager seasons 4-7, Star Trek: Enterprise seasons 1-4, and Star Trek Nemesis. It also features material detailing the recent big-screen films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Packaged in a stunning deluxe slipcase, this two-volume set is a must-have for every Star Trek fan’s library.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 4 uses time travel to remember the past 5 seasons

It's pretty obvious watching this episode that the cast and crew, at the very least, strongly suspected that this was going to be the last season of "Discovery" when it was written.

in a scene from the tv show star trek: discovery, two women star at each other while standing on the deck of a spaceship

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 4

With the news that "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is ending after its current season, that really only leaves "Strange New Worlds" as the last remaining Nu-Trek series currently airing on television.

And, a word to the wise: If you're a die-hard fan of " Discovery ," make sure you have your own physical media, 'cause no one likes being at the mercy of whatever an overpaid television executive thinks. You're welcome. Moreover, after this final season of "Discovery," we're going to have until wait until next year for the next season of " Strange New Worlds ." It's all starting to feel a bit like "Game of Thrones" all over again.

Episode four, entitled "Face the Strange," is without a doubt the best entry so far in the fifth season, and one can't help but wonder after watching exactly when the cast and production crew were first informed that this would be the last season, because it was definitely before this episode was actually written. The reason? It is, for all intents and purposes, a 60-minute, time-travel-powered, postscript-style reminiscence of all elements of all five seasons — or as much as you can cram into an hour — and what a rollercoaster ride it's been.

So when Alex Kurtzman or Michelle Paradise or whoever it is that actually has authority in the writer's room entered said room, put down their grande iced sugar-free vanilla half-double decaffeinated half-caff latte with soy milk and a twist of lemon in their Paramount-branded 40oz Stanley Clean Slate Quencher H2.0 Flowstate™ Tumbler and announced, "Wouldn't it be great to revisit chapters from seasons one, two, three and four?" no doubt everyone cheered. "And how will this be possible?" asked Kurtzman, to which an eager-beaver intern no doubt excitedly thrust their hand up into the air and exclaimed, "Why, time travel , of course!"

"Quite right," replied Kurtzman (in our imaginations, at least), adding, "But it can be for one episode, so it has to be an isolated, self-contained form of time travel." Thus was conceived the "Time Bug," and with it came a ton of technobabble to precisely explain its parameters. Although quite why Zora didn't detect it was not addressed. Also, you know, transporters.

But this clever Time Bug, which can manipulate time in just about any way that's convenient for the writers to overcome any potential chronological complications — like life-changing paradoxes — came onboard the USS Discovery by way of that shifty Malinne "Moll" Ravel (Eve Harlow), who managed to infiltrate the Trill homeworld undetected, as we saw last week .

As a result, we get reminder glimpses of Michael Burnham's first coming aboard the USS Discovery way, way, way back in season one, complete with appropriate uniforms and everything. We get a fleeting reminder of the Red Angel and the battle with Control , naturally The Burn gets a mention, and there's even a not-very-subtle nod to the short-Trek " Calypso ." It's all a little bit like a Greatest Hits album that doesn't include any of the tracks that you actually liked, being played at 45 instead of 33. Remember vinyl?

Since it's now obvious that this season was written after the cancellation announcement had been made to the cast and crew, the single most important question is, Will the show benefit from that, or will it suffer? Are the remaining six episodes going to be a drawn-out epilogue, tied loosely together with a mostly lame plot? Or, will advance knowledge of the show's future actually serve the writers well, allowing them to produce something above and beyond the normal level of writing?

There's even a very entertaining scene, in which 23rd-century Burnham must fight her 32nd-century self. Of course, the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator fitted to the space bug prevents any changes from affecting the timeline, so you know, phew .

Most of the original Discovery bridge reappear, as close to how they looked seven years ago as possible, and even Lt. Cmdr. Airiam (played by Sara Mitich in the first season and Hannah Cheesman in the second) makes a cameo, so that's nice. Also, we can really see as Sonequa Martin-Green flips between her two Burnhams just how effective that dreadlock hair piece that she wears through this season actually is. Half the show's budget probably went to that.

It's a fun filler episode, and, even if it doesn't advance the plot an inch, it does allow character development to take place, particularly between Burnham and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). Arguably the biggest surprise was that the writers were able to resist putting Captain Pike (Anson Mount) into this episode.
