To Boldly Sing

Star trek has inspired plenty of pop culture, but nothing is as bizarre as the musical fandom following its warp trail..

Hey all, Ernie here with a fresh one from David Buck , who is helping us maintain our mental-health-break status for this week. If you’re a Star Trek enthusiast, you will enjoy this one.

Today in Tedium : Some readers might have noticed my absence last month. Unfortunately, my father passed suddenly and I was out of commission for a while. As I looked through some of his stuff, I came across some things that reminded me of the times we would sit down together to watch Star Trek: the Next Generation or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Thinking about those moments reminded me of some old files and pitches that I was working on a few years ago. I came across one idea and decided to flesh it out a bit: a piece on songs about a certain science fiction television show. If I recall correctly, the original outline of the piece was written for a certain site that ghosted me a few years ago. So, here it is, completely rewritten with fresh insights. So set your phasers to stun and beam up your sense of humor because in today’s Tedium, we’re going where no one has gone before: down the black hole of songs about Star Trek . — David @ Tedium

Today’s GIF comes from a claymation music video for the well-known novelty song “Star Trekkin’” by The Firm.

“And on no other show do I police myself as much, because I’m such a fan of Star Trek that it’s important to me that we are as funny as we can be without breaking Star Trek at all times and without being mean about Star Trek. With the network and with the studio, the conversations are mostly when I’m pitching an episode, I’ll be like, ‘Here’s what inspired this episode.’ And it’s always coming from a thing that I love about Star Trek, and then ‘Here are the things that we love about these characters, here’s how we want to explore them, and then this is why it’s going to be funny.’”

— Mike McMahan , creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks , discussing his approach to comedy on the show in a 2021 interview with Collider .

Where no musician has gone before (well, not really)

Last year, I discovered something rather silly: a radio station with an apostrophe in its call letters. I joked with Ernie that it reminded me of the Klingon language. This led to a very interesting journey about Klingon that ended up going pretty far and even made an appearance on Vice’s Motherboard —something for which I am eternally grateful. Revisiting this idea only further brings home the point that science fiction television can be a goldmine for weird stuff.

Star Trek has always been a great source of humor. Where Deep Space Nine and Picard readily take on more serious themes, there’s something to be said about the ever present sense of humor that runs a deep vein through most Trek shows. It’s in “The Trouble With Tribbles,” all over TNG (especially in some of Riker’s most memorable scenes ), interspersed between more maudlin moments of DS9 , and encapsulated by certain characters on Voyager . And that’s only naming a few shows! It’s not difficult to see the humor in the shows.

A few years ago, a surprising new Star Trek show was announced, focusing on the non-bridge crew of a “second contact” starship called The Cerritos . That show was Star Trek: Lower Decks . Created by Mike McMahan (who also worked on shows like Rick & Morty and Solar Opposites ), the show centers on a few quirky characters who aren’t officers but perform the ship’s grunt work. It’s hysterical and the characters are quite fun to spend 22 minutes with each episode.

With Star Trek: Lower Decks already two seasons into its run and a plethora of Trek shows coming out, it’s almost as if a renaissance for the series is upon us. Also, Strange New Worlds looks amazing.

Lower Decks goes out of its way to take itself less seriously, proving there’s definitely some room for a bit of comedy interspersed with the more abstract seriousness the show often aims to hit. What Lower Decks does so well is how it leverages that crazy sense of humor into the fandom at large. It sort of reminds me of what happens when enthusiastic, musically inclined fans get together to write songs about the show.

Music has always been integral to Star Trek . From the opening theme of Star Trek (TOS) onward, music has been an integral part of Star Trek , inspiring viewers and musicians alike. While each show’s own music is instantly recognizable, the program also inspired a great deal of music by other artists (often related to TOS ). You’ve probably heard “ The Trouble With Klingons ,” a pastiche created by Dennis Williams for a certain novelty song contest or “Spock Rap” by the animators at Will Vinton Studios (under the name The Neural Paralyzers ) in the ’80s. Admittedly, not everything in this category is great, but there are plenty of gems around. Here are a few artists/songs that explore strange musical worlds, seek out new melodies, and boldly sing where no one has sung before!

You won’t find William Shatner’s The Transformed Man or Leonard Nimoy’s Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy here. Likewise, we won’t revisit the original Trek theme and its lyrics . Rather, these songs and sketches represent unique takes on Trek by various musicians and comedians past and present.

5. “Banned from Argo,” Leslie Fish & the Dehorn Crew

“ And we’re banned from Argo every one, banned from Argo just for having a little fun…”

Filk music is full of talented musicians who share a love of science fiction and community. Filk music—folk music with lyrics based on science fiction—has a rich history , with a strong connection to Trek.

Leslie Fish is perhaps the genre’s best known figure. With her 12-string guitar and larger than life persona, Fish writes about science fiction and beyond.

“ Banned from Argo ” is an upbeat shanty with slightly twisted lyrics. The Enterprise crew goes on shore leave and various hilarious hijinks ensue. It doesn’t reference TOS characters by name, it’s obvious which crew members she’s singing about.

The first few lines of a song explore the mischievous misadventures of the crew checking out “every joint and bar” on Argo during their shore leave. Listeners then learn about the Captain’s sinful tastes and complex methods, the engineer’s ability to “outdrink space marines and a demolition crew,” and the first officer teaches the computer how to swear. It’s a shame what happened to the doctor … but I digress.

Surprisingly, Fish doesn’t seem to like the song much. As she states in several interviews (notably her brief appearance in Trekkies 2 ), the tune was written as quickly to fill out an album. It rapidly became her best known song—something she is a bit cranky about .

Leslie Fish has a large ouvre of other songs, both Trek related and otherwise. Her exuberant performances and love for storytelling shine during her performances. If you’re not a fan of folk music and/or sea shanties, you may want to give this one a pass.

If you enjoy her Trek music, check out the song “Carmen Miranda’s Ghost” and its accompanying anthology . For the full Leslie Fish experience, give Folk Songs for Solar Sailors a spin—if you can find it .

4. “Everything I Do, I Do with William Shatner,” Warp 11

”I don’t want to go to work, just wanna hang with Captain Kirk and if I had my way, I’d make it so…”

Dedicated to all things Trek , Sacramento’s Warp 11 built a career playing Trek -themed music. Originally devised as a “band that only plays Trek songs” for a one-time video project of bass player/singer Karl Miller, the idea stuck and Warp 11 was born. Two decades and six albums later, the band is still on their musical journey.

Through incredible energy, crunchy electric guitar, and hilarious lyrics, “ Everything I Do, I Do with William Shatner ” from 2002’s Red Alert perfectly reflects the band’s “mission statement” —to convert listeners into Trek fans. Despite its title, the song is about Captain Kirk rather than Shatner himself.

Effortlessly juxtaposing the manic energy of The Presidents of the United States of America and the killer chops of The Ramones with a wider mix of blues, rock, and punk styles. Add their DIY punk-meets- TOS cosplay aesthetic, and you get one very eclectic listening/visual experience.

With Warp 11, you’ll find songs about Q and Betazoids, an entire album covering The Borg, and a few sporadic tunes about Voyager . The band’s healthy mix of TOS and TNG material is the epitome of Trek music created by fans, for fans.

While I enjoy their music, it skews toward a teenager/adult audience and is definitely not for kids. Warp 11 are well known for their sense of humor and double entendre and they can be a bit R-rated at times, with mildly NSFW album art. Some of their stuff can be a bit of an acquired taste, but if you dig pink, scifi, humor, and Star Trek , they’re worth checking out!

For those interested in Warp 11, start with Red Alert , then dive into any of their post-2007 work from It’s Dead Jim onward, available at their website and most streaming services.

3. “StarDrek,” Bobby “Boris” Pickett and Peter Ferarra

“ To boldly go where everyone has gone before !”

What do The Godfather , the most famous Halloween song of all time, and Star Trek have in common? Bobby “Boris” Pickett, of course. After having his breakout smash with “The Monster Mash” in 1962 (we wrote about this classic novelty tune in 2018 ), Pickett forged a career as a writer, playwright, comedian, and songwriter.

In 1975-1976, Pickett got together with producer Peter Ferrara to record “Godfather’s Respect”—a song about the 1972 film set to the tune of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”—and an original spoken word spoof of TOS called “Star Drek” (not to be confused with the MAD Magazine spoofs of a similar name).

The sketch follows the daily operation of a parody version of The Enterprise and its crew, focusing on the most exaggerated aspects of each character.

It isn’t an outright mockery of the franchise and its fans, either. “Star Drek” is a carefully crafted satire of the genre that plays to the absurdity of the occasional technobabble used on the show, taking a light hearted approach to the action. We won’t spoil the punchline for you here.

Barrett Hansen—a.k.a. radio host Dr. Demento—included the sketch on his 25th Anniversary collection, writing the two were on opposite coasts during the recording process so Peter ended up doing all the voices himself. They shared the credits, as Pickett helped write the piece.

The sketch is uproariously funny every time you hear it—a rare accomplishment for a comedy/novelty song—full of nuance and spot-on characterizations. Of course, your mileage may vary. The humor may be a bit dry for some, but it’s a fun piece that holds up remarkably well today.

If you like Pickett and Ferrara’s style consider listening to Pickett’s The Monster Mash LP. For more Peter Ferrara, watch the Jonathan Winters specials On the Ledge and Spaced Out .

Terry Mc Govern

(via Terry McGovern’s website )

2. “Beam me up Scotty,” Terry McGovern

”Beam me up Scotty, oh beam me up Scotty, life sure is trouble below …”

Terry McGovern is known today for his voice acting (he was the voice of Launchpad McQuack in the original Duck Tales ), but he began his career as a radio broadcaster . Later, he would work in movies and television as well. In 1976, he released a Trek song of his own, “Beam me up, Scotty” on Baseball Records as a B-side to his rendition of the classic tune “ Pachalafaka .” You can hear the entire thing on SoundCloud .

Not to be confused with an obscure country tune of the same name, McGovern’s song is a quiet rumination on how boring/awful life on earth can seem sometimes. The singer longs to join the crew of The Enterprise and escape the banality of modern life.

The song received airplay on various radio shows, but languished in obscurity for years until being officially re-released on a compilation album in the early 2000s. While it may not be the most well known Trek tune, it’s certainly well loved .

McGovern regularly attends conventions and teaches acting classes—on top of his legendary voice work.

1. “Star Trekkin’,” The Firm

“ There’s Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow… ”

The final entry in our list may be the best known: “Star Trekkin’” by The Firm. No, not Jimmy Page’s post Zeppelin band; this group was a side project of John O’Connor, a British music producer.

The song was popular in its own time—it hit Number One in the UK music charts and stayed there for quite awhile back in 1986—but took on new life in the internet age. It was used in one of the episodes of a Flash-based web series called Stone Trek (a mashup of The Flintstones and TOS ) and a claymation video makes the internet rounds every so often. Not bad for a novelty song that was rejected by every record company O’Connor approached. Then it became a million seller, prompting O’Connor’s move to America, where he went on to compose for television .

The Firm released a full-length LP, Serious Fun , that’s worth at least a slip of gold pressed latinum. “Star Trekkin’” is the best and catchiest of the tracks. Good luck getting the tune out of your head.

The number of songs in the Star Trek musical Boldly Go! Written by a Caltech theoretical physics graduate , Grant Remmen, and his brother Cole, the show is a humorous and satirical take on The Original Series . With songs like “Dammit Jim, I’m a Doctor” and “Captain’s Log (As Great As I Know I Am),” the show is well worth watching for its two hour runtime. According to a 2016 Caltech ad for the show, Boldly Go! is ”a story about being true to oneself and one’s convictions, about friendship and love, about discovery and wonder, about the triumph of the individual over adversity, and about the joy of sharing with each other this vast and mysterious Universe.” For those interested in such things, it’s available in its entirety on YouTube .

When I originally outlined this —several years ago now—it had quite a few more songs. But over time, my interest and enthusiasm for Trek has waned somewhat.

And of course we couldn’t fit all of our favorite goofy science fiction songs into this piece. But there are plenty of great Trek bands around like “one-chord punk rockers” No Kill I (and NKI: the Next Generation and NKI:Deep Space Nine; they’re all different bands), modern filkers Ookla the Mok , and the Klingon metal group Stovokor , whose performances take Trek music to the next level.

Songs and sketches about Trek continue to endure well into the 21st century and beyond and it will be interesting to see what strange musical moments the future of Trek fandom holds.

And although this piece no longer resembles anything close to the original idea I had for it, I’m glad I was able to take a quick reprieve from the insanity of our modern world to find—and share—some humor from the bridge of The Enterprise that can still resonate with audiences today.

Thanks again to David for the great piece. Find this one a worthy read? Share it with a pal ! And see you all next week.

In 2013 during Star Trek Into Darkness , as young James Kirk wakes to his communicator beeping (with twins on each side of him) he is listening to a remix of "Body Movin'".

"When Salome plays the drums" – " phasers on stun "

"Cliches" – " He's always tuned into Star Trek . She's always tuned into him ".

"Conehead Love" [ ]

The video, which ties into the movie Coneheads has the USS Enterprise -D appear on Beldar and Prymaat's viewscreen telling them to move. Clips from " Where No One Has Gone Before " and a clip of the Bajoran wormhole also appear.

DarkMateria [ ]

"The Picard Song" is an electronica theme created by DarkMateria. The song's lyrical content is comprised solely from audio samples of dialogue from Star Trek: The Next Generation , most of which are lines spoken by Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard .

Samples used

  • " Here's to the finest crew in Starfleet . "
  • " The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth... scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. If you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth... you don't deserve to wear that uniform. " (" The First Duty ")
  • " This is becoming a speech. " " You're the captain, sir, you're entitled. " " Hmm... I'm entitled to ramble on about something everyone knows. "
  • " He just kept talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic so that no-one had a chance to interrupt; it was really quite hypnotic. " (" Timescape ")
  • " You'll have to call again, I was just leaving. I'm uhh... not dressed properly. " (" The Big Goodbye ")
  • " My love is a fever, longing still for that which longer nurseth the disease. " " Tell me more. " " In faith I do not love thee with mine eyes for they in thee a thousand error see; but 'tis my heart, that loves what they despise, who in despite of view, are pleased to dote, shall I compare thee to a summer's day? "
  • " Darmok and Jilad at Tenagra. " (" Darmok ")
  • " This is the captain speaking. " (" Where No One Has Gone Before ")
  • " I am Locutus of Borg. You will respond to my questions. " (" Descent ")
  • " You are Borg. You will assist us. " (" I Borg ")
  • " Lock phasers on that vessel... " (" Encounter at Farpoint ")
  • " There are four lights. " (" Chain Of Command, Part II ")

The song also makes extensive use of the quotes " Engage ", " Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise", and " Make it so ", particularly during the chorus. Since these are spoken by Patrick Stewart in many episodes, it is difficult – if not impossible – to determine the samples' specific episodes of origin.

Usage in other media

A "Picard Song" sample is the feature of a popular YTMND page. However, according to the YTMND wiki, " Some users seem to believe that the 'Luc' in 'Jean-Luc' is not spoken in the sound file used for the site. The 'Luc' is present, but it is difficult to hear because of the electronic beats that comprise the percussion of the song. Nevertheless, some users maintain that the 'Luc' is absent. " [2]

The song starts with:

and the chorus says:

But most notably, the recurring operatic hook of the song is a slower version of the TOS theme by Alexander Courage .

Edenbridge [ ]

The Austrian symphonic power metal band Edenbridge has a number of Star Trek -related references, not least of which is the name of founder Lanvall's studio, Farpoint Station .

Their 2004 album Shine features two DS9-themed songs, " Move Along Home " and " What You Leave Behind ". On their 2008 album MyEarthDream , another two songs, "Shadowplay" (after the DS9 episode of the same name , with references to the plot of the episode) and "Remember Me" (after the TNG episode ) are Trek -themed.

The music video for the song "Higher" from their 2010 album Solitaire features a duel between a swordsman and a cowled and masked assailant resembling Joran Dax from the DS9 episode " Equilibrium ", who in the end of the video turns out to be the swordsman's doppelgänger.

Epic Rap Battles of History [ ]

This YouTube series pits historical as well as occasionally fictional figures against each other in rap battles. One such rap battle is between Christopher Columbus and James T. Kirk . [3]

The Firm [ ]

In 1987, a group called The Firm released " Star Trekkin' ", a comedy single based on The Original Series . The song was #1 for two weeks in the UK singles charts. The video featured stop motion animated versions of the cast of The Original Series .

The song's lyrics are made up of parodies or deliberately funny readings of famous lines from The Original Series . For example, the song's chorus includes the line " Boldly going forward, 'cause we can't find reverse. "

Leslie Fish [ ]

Filker and sometime labor activist Leslie Fish wrote many songs that are set in the Star Trek universe, especially Star Trek: The Original Series . The most (in)famous is probably "Banned from Argo", but other examples are "Wobblies from Space" and "Neutral Zone, Romulan View".

Five Year Mission [ ]

With the albums Year One (2010), Year Two (2011), and Year Three (2013) this band lovingly crafts pop rock songs named after and about the episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series . "The Trouble With Tribbles" (2012) features six different songs of the same name and a new birthday song solely for actor George Takei .

The first albums of this Canadian progressive rock group dealt almost solely with science fiction themes, the best known of which, " Phasors on Stun ", is quite clearly a Star Trek reference.

Futuristic Sex Robotz [ ]

This band did a song called "The Positronic Pimp", extolling the successes of Data , which quotes " Ode to Spot " in response to the lyrics " What does the android have to say about his favorite ***? "

Garbage [ ]

Garbage 's song, " Alien Sex Fiend ", features the boatswain whistle from TOS at the end.

Genesis [ ]

Spock, Land of Confusion

The "Mr. Spock" puppet

In 1986, the English rock band Genesis released the music video for their hit single Land of Confusion . The music video features a puppet of Leonard Nimoy as Mister Spock trying to solve a Rubik's Cube but then throwing it away. [4]

The caricature puppet was created by Peter Fluck and Roger Law , creators of the British television show Spitting Image .

Paul Gilbert [ ]

American guitarist Paul Gilbert, former member of the band Mr. Big, recorded a song called "Mr. Spock" in his 2005 album Space Ship One . The lyrics are about a person who denies being overcome by emotions. The chorus has the following lyrics:

Johnny Gill [ ]

The inspiration for the title of ex-New Edition singer's new jack swing "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is obvious. The lyrics, about bedding a woman, are uninspired by Star Trek or perhaps simply uninspired.

The Gothsicles [ ]

The song "Wearing A Star Trek Uniform, Watching Tony Lechmanski Sleep" involves dressing up in a Star Trek uniform, tribbles, Gorn, Seven of Nine fanfiction, and more.

Hank Green [ ]

"What Would Captain Picard Do?" is a pop punk anthem with advice for starship commanders new and old.

Hawkwind [ ]

Hawkwind is a British space rock band active since 1969. The opening of their song "Alien (I Am)" from Alien 4 (1995) samples " The Mind's Eye "; another song on the same album is titled "Beam Me Up".

William Shatner covered Hawkwind's song "Silver Machine" on Seeking Major Tom (2011). Members of Hawkwind have also performed in Shatner's music. [5]

Lee Hayes [ ]

The song "David Duchovny's Bride" mentions channel surfing through, among other things, Star Trek reruns, before finding true love in The X-Files .

Helion Prime [ ]

The American power metal group's song "A Place I Thought I Knew" from their debut self-titled album (2016) is about Kirk dealing with Spock's death at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .

Heltah Skeltah [ ]

In "Grate Unknown":

" We up in this space deep, wit' nines like Star-Fleet "

Hillman Morning Show [ ]

"Star Trek Rhapsody" is a parody of Queen's song "Bohemian Rhapsody". This song is often incorrectly associated with "Weird Al" Yankovic, but it is actually from a group known as Hillman Morning Show and was written and voiced by the show's co-host Kevin Barbare. Several music videos for the song, including one by the original performer, are widely available on the internet.

Leslie Hudson [ ]

Information Society [ ]

The song "What's On Your Mind" by the US band Information Society features a clip of Spock saying " Pure energy " several times. The song begins with a clip of McCoy saying " It's worked so far, but we're not out yet! " The clips are from "Errand of Mercy" and "I, Mudd", respectively.

"Walking Away" begins with a clip of Captain Kirk saying " It is useless to resist us. " Later in the song, Scott can be heard saying " Let's go see! " These clips are from "Mirror, Mirror" and "Wolf in the Fold", respectively.

"Over the Sea" features a sample of " In every revolution, there's one man with a vision " from "Mirror, Mirror".

" The segment by La Forge is only used in the first song, and is " when we reach that point, whatever happened will happen again. "

Rock band Phish , whose members are self-admitted Star Trek fans, released a 26-second instrumental song called "Riker's Mailbox", in which Jonathan Frakes played trombone, on their 1994 album Hoist .

Phish also wrote and performed a song called "Spock's Brain," although the song has never made it onto any of the band's albums. The song was inspired by the episode and its title was chosen over several other options by a live audience.

Warp speed , Doctor Spock couldn't chase

The erroneous reference to Spock as "Doctor" is likely due to conflating the Star Trek character with famed pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock. At the time of this song's recording, Rihanna had recently been involved in the Star Trek franchise by recording the song "Sledgehammer" for the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack.

If you don't know what a relationship is, just imagine having sex. If you don't know what sex is, you probably watch too much Star Trek . Oops. " [11]

SpizzEnergi [ ]

"Where's Captain Kirk?" is a song released originally by the punk band SpizzEnergi in 1979. The lyrics are about the singer suddenly finding himself aboard the Starship Enterprise and ends with the line "Where's Spock?". The opening bars consist of their parody of TOS theme music.

The song was the first to top the newly-created UK Indy charts in 1980. SpizzEnergi was notorious for changing its name frequently (at least once a year) so live versions by the band were often performed under different names.

It was covered by the band R.E.M. in 1992 and released as a fan club exclusive. This version also contains sound effects and dialogue from Star Trek .

The Starship Róisín [ ]

The Starship Róisín was an Irish radio parody of Star Trek . It was a short-lived science fiction comedy radio series on The Ian Dempsey Show on RTÉ Radio. It followed the adventures of Captain Bono (played by Paul Woodful, based on the U2 lead singer Bono), his Vulcan sidekick Stephen "Spock" Roche (played by Arthur Mathews, based on cyclist Stephen Roche, with a "cold, cycling brain"; storylines involved "space bicycles"), the ship chef Darina Alien (based on Darina Allen), MC Tony St James (Woodfull), Johnny Guitar (a "little fella" who made guitar sounds), and ship chaplain Father Ted (Arthur Mathews; TOS never had a ship's chaplain as Roddenberry was quite insistent that they would not exist in the future).

Woodfull later said that the show was "probably a bit too weird for [its] slot", and that, when the station suggested they take two of the characters and launch a spin-off called Tea and Toast with Tony and Ted, Mathews opted out.

While the band and the series didn't last and left little mark otherwise, it did represent an early outing of the character Father Ted who would be later played on TV by comedian Dermot Morgan and given his own series, which proved popular in Ireland and the UK.

Star Trek: The Lost Episode [ ]

Star Trek: The Lost Episode is a radio bit comprised of soundbites from various episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series , edited together to create a "lost episode" in which Captain Kirk and Spock become... intimate. Soundbites of Montgomery Scott are also included. The bit is played by certain radio morning shows nationwide.

The bit begins like this:

As Kirk and Spock continue (complete with screams provided by the "evil" Kirk duplicate from " The Enemy Within "), Scotty interrupts and becomes involved in the proceedings. The bit ends with Kirk depicting in his log that he's seen a part of himself that no man should ever see, after which he tells Spock " Thank you ... from both of us. " Both are lines from the end of "The Enemy Within".

One of the radio morning shows that occasionally play this bit is Tommy & Rumble on the Virginia radio station, WNOR (FM99). Tommy & Rumble once played the bit for actor James Doohan (who played Scott) when he was a guest at the station. According to co-host Rick Rumble, halfway through the bit, Doohan demanded that they "turn that thing OFF!" Rumble stated it was a lot like being on the bridge or in the engine room of the USS Enterprise , being yelled at by "Scotty".

A music video was released in January 2009 featuring the local comedy group Gitak, but did not feature footage from Star Trek itself, instead loosely dissecting the lyrics intentionally and working from there for comedic (and copyright-evading) effect.

Tenacious D [ ]

Tenacious D has covered the " Theme from Star Trek ", with the lyrics included.

Toxic Coma [ ]

Toxic Coma is a minor side project of Velvet Acid Christ ( which itself has also referenced Star Trek ) A promotional image seemingly supposed to depict the band is derived from a group shot of the original series crew on the Enterprise bridge, though with the faces replaced by new ones, ranging from badly pasted on human faces to more grotesque creatures.

The band T'Pau formed in 1986 in Shropshire, England, taking their name from the Vulcan priestess of the same name in Star Trek: The Original Series . None of their songs directly reference Star Trek , although there has been discussion among their fanbase over the years regarding whether or not some of their songs address Trek -inspired themes, in part because the band's biggest hit, "China In Your Hand", is admitted by the band to be a reference to Frankenstein, and another song by the band samples from the theme of the television series Dallas . Aside from such speculation, when their hit "Heart and Soul" was initially played on American radio, the edit used by radio stations frequently included a lead-in and/or lead-out featuring dialogue spoken by Kirk and T'Pau from the TOS episode " Amok Time ". Lead-ins included Kirk saying, " Bones, you know who that is? T'Pau " and T'Pau saying, " What thee are about to see comes down from the time of the beginning, without change. This is the Vulcan heart. This is the Vulcan soul. This is our way. " The lead-out was Kirk saying, " How about that T'Pau? They couldn't turn her down. " How much involvement the band had with the development of such radio edits is not known.

Terry Talbot [ ]

Terry Talbot, along with his brother John Michael Talbot, was a leading member of the highly influential rock band Mason Profit before discovering Christianity and each subsequently doing solo work. On Terry's 1978 album A time to laugh, a time to sing on the cut "Angels" Terry parodies (in addition to Rev. Billy Graham) Star Trek crew meeting God on their viewscreen. He starts out saying " if there's a shuttle craft, it'll wait. " and " there's Lt. Uhura with a baby bottle in her ear ". Spock shows emotion shouting out " Alelujah. "

Velvet Acid Christ [ ]

Velvet Acid Christ is an electro-industrial band hailing from Denver, Colorado. The song "Thought Criminal" from their 1997 release Neuralblastoma contains, among others, lengthy samples of Jonathan Frakes as Commander Riker and Brent Spiner as Lieutenant Commander Data from the TNG episode " Frame of Mind ". The samples used are of the characters reciting their lines from the episode's titular play, Frame of Mind .

Velvet Acid Christ have also released several versions of the track "Futile". It contains several samples of the TNG crew's encounters with the Borg. Versions of the song mixed before 1996 have samples taken from the series Star Trek The Next Generation . Versions of the song mixed after 1996 (most notably "Futile (Resisted mix by Funker Vogt)") contain samples from the from the the motion picture Star Trek: First Contact , including phrases from the Borg as well as dialogue between the Borg Queen and Jean-Luc Picard. The lyrics also appear to be about the Borg, and specifically about assimilation .

Venetian Snares [ ]

The 2008 song "Koonut-Kaliffee" by Canadian electronic musician Venetian Snares features numerous vocal samples of Leonard Nimoy as Spock from the original series episode "Amok Time" over a breakcore beat, including, " One touches the other in order to feel each other's thoughts. In this way, our minds were locked together, so that at the proper time, we would both be drawn to koon-ut-kal-if-fee, " and " My eyes is flame, my heart is flame – I burn. "

Voltaire [ ]

Voltaire , the Dark Cabaret/Darkwave artist, released an EP called Banned on Vulcan . It was comprised entirely of parodies of various aspects of the Star Trek universe. The album features updated versions of the songs from Banned on Vulcan, as well as new tracks parodying Star Wars and Doctor Who.

William shatner’s “the real slim shady” and other “star trek”-related songs you never knew existed.

(Photo Credit: Sunset Boulevard/Corbis via Getty Images)

Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek has become a phenomenon in the TV world. Even 55 years after its initial air date on September 8, 1966, the iconic series continues to inspire new TV programs and films.

Over the years, it has also inspired musical artists to create songs about the show. Notable cast members such as William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy have also performed their own musical numbers. The songs range from pretty decent to downright awful, but they all have their place in Star Trek history.

Songs by Cast Members

William shatner’s notorious musical career.

William Shatner might have made his name portraying Captain James Tiberius Kirk in the original series of Star Trek , but he also pursued a musical career and released eight albums.

Rather than singing, Shatner’s style is to speak the lyrics in a dramatic manner. His first album, The Transformed Man , interspersed his interpretation of songs like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Mr. Tambourine Man” with dramatic readings of Shakespeare.

Universal mockery of this album didn’t prevent Shatner from continuing his passion for music. In 1978, he hosted the 5th Saturn Awards and performed Elton John’s “Rocket Man” in his own unique style. The performance has been laughed at but also lovingly parodied.

Always someone who is happy to laugh at himself, Shatner provided the voice of Captain Kirk in an episode of the science-fiction cartoon Futurama in 2002. A short but memorable section of the episode involved Shatner giving a spoken-word rendition of “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem.

Jean-Luc Picard’s “Alphabet Song”

(Photo Credit: Paramount Pictures / MovieStillsDB)

Sir Patrick Stewart is well-known for his tongue-in-cheek skits, and he is a stalwart of both stage and screen. But rarely do fans get a chance to see him mix the two together.

His rendition of “ The Alphabet Song ” is made even more perfect because he does it on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise in full Picard garb.

While this video has been shared across the internet, there seems to be no agreement on how it actually came about. Theories range from Stewart serenading Gene Roddenberry on set to the cheeky actor just playing around during takes. Whatever the motivation, this little video has caused many people to crack a smile.

“The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” by Leonard Nimoy

Not to be outdone by his co-star Shatner, Leonard Nimoy also followed a musical career alongside his acting. However, Nimoy only released five albums compared to Shatner’s eight.

In 1968, Leonard included on his second album, Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy , a song that ended up going viral when it was rediscovered by the BBC for a 1996 documentary called Funk Me Up, Scotty .

Written by Charles Randolph Grean, “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” tells a musical version of the story told in J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel The Hobbit .

When required to appear on the Malibu U variety show in July 1967, Nimoy put together a little music video for the song. The footage was lost to obscurity until it was shown again by John Peel in the BBC2 documentary. After that, it’s been shared all over the internet and has become a fan favorite.

Many years later, in 2009, Nimoy treated fans to another, shorter but live rendition of the song at Fan Expo 2009 after giving them a little background as to how the song came to be born. The performance was caught on camera for everyone to enjoy.

Songs Inspired by Star Trek

“99 luftballons” by nena.

NENA the Band. (Photo Credit: kpa/United Archives via Getty Images)

Many people had to wait until the German version of this song was translated into English before they could spot the Star Trek connection.

In the song, Nena buys 99 red balloons and releases them. They show up on the radar of various world powers who scramble to defend themselves from what they think are enemy contacts. Nuclear war is the result.

The lyrics are a poetic reference to the dreams of the German people after WWII. Captain Kirk makes an appearance with the words: “ Everyone’s a superhero. Everyone’s a Captain Kirk ,” referencing the fact that when the balloons appear on the radar, everyone races to be the first to intercept them.

“Star Trekkin’” by The Firm

At the top of any “inspired by” list is this 1987 hit created by a British novelty band. The performances are comedy renditions of the original characters. The voices were provided not only by the band, but also by a studio technician and the wife of one of the songwriters.

The lyrics are quite simple and repetitious, but include such gems as: “There’s Klingons on the starboard bow – scrape ‘em off, Jim!”

It’s a little-known fact that this song actually created one of the most repeated Star Trek phrases. “It’s life, Jim, but not as we know it” is a phrase from the song that was never actually spoken in the TV series. However, the lyric proved so popular and so in-keeping with the show that it is commonly misattributed to the TV program.

“Where’s Captain Kirk?” By Spizzenergi

(Photo Credit: By Aferisto, CC BY-SA 3.0, accessed via Wikimedia Commons)

The Star Trek reference in this song is not only more obvious than that in “99 Red Balloons,” it’s right there in the title.

The song charts how the singer is suddenly beamed onboard the Starship Enterprise . He wanders about for a bit, meeting all the crew except for Kirk. By the end of the song, it becomes clear that he can’t find Captain Kirk because he is Captain Kirk.

This 1979 single stayed at number one on the UK Indie Chart for seven weeks. The band also did two follow-up songs: “Spock’s Missing” and “Five Year Mission (Featuring the Return of Spock).”

“Starship Edelweiss” by Edelweiss

Austrian electronic dance band Edelweiss decided not only to make a song and music video heavily influenced by Star Trek , they also incorporated the main theme from the 1960s series.

They sampled Alexander Courage’s “Theme from Star Trek” and added some straightforward and repetitive lyrics to create a European hit.

“Ch-Check it Out” by the Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys arrive at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards at the American Airlines Arena August 29, 2004 in Miami, Florida. (Photo Credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images)

In a nod to the original Star Trek series, the music video accompanying this Beastie Boys single begins with the three of them dressed as Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beaming down onto Earth. A little later, the three of them get into a fight, drawing the attention of the police, before McCoy disintegrates the other two with a laser.

More from us: Lucille Ball is the Reason we have Star Trek

The Star Trek skit is only one among several in the video, which also includes boisterous, fish-throwing grannies. It shows how much effort went into the video that the song only lasts 3 minutes and 34 seconds, while the final 1 minute 34 seconds of the video is the credits of all those involved.

To make matters worse, JP's ship is cloaked - or invisible - and the birds of prey are in an invisible cage somewhere in the land below the ships. The Boneheads beam down and search for the missing birds. But JP's ship attacks the VERTIBRISE, disabling their transporters, and stranding Bonehead and his landing party in the field below. Boldly Going Nowhere was a proposed American science fiction single-camera comedy television series created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Adam Stein to be aired in 2009 on the Fox network. The series was planned as a parody of the Star Trek franchise in the format of a workplace sitcom; the title was a reference to the famous phrase "To boldly go where no man has gone before" from the opening speech in the first two Star Trek series. Cool Age is a science fiction satire that pays homage to many famous films. The project "Cool Age" exists since 1996 and was founded by Rainer Grüning and Dennis Rada. The Cool Age universe now comprises several films, two series and three radio plays. As the number of film enthusiasts and fans increased, an association was founded: Double R Productions.

Within the framework of our association it is easier to communicate with like-minded people. In addition, it is possible to work with a small budget, which gets us more chance of increasing (film) knowledge.

Cool Age is an association of several planets in the 24th century, the so-called "Shooting Stars". More specifically, we follow the adventures of the flagship "U. F. S. Survival", where Captain Ted Erikson and Commander Karta are performing their duties. On their interstellar missions they get to know new planets and mysterious species. The Cool Age universe now includes more characters than just the Captain and his first officer, so we're happy to see you plunge into the Cool Age universe and experience new adventures with us.

Jist?, kapitáne! - Yes, Captain

Do této nelehké situace vyplouvá hvězdolet Vesmírné Legie H.V.L.

Starship Edsel

Series Title

Silver Age Live Stage Performance; Series (Parody) — Chicago

Starship Edsel is a Star Trek inspired farce set aboard the Federation Starship Edsel towards in the early 25th century. It is based upon a LARP written and developed by Brandon Brylawski, who is also a producer and head writer on this show.

The Edsel is a cruiser, Edsel class (the only one), largely regarded as a failure in ship design. Somehow, serious flaws in architecture and engineering were not caught until the prototype ship was completed. From its launch, it has been plagued with mechanical and operational problems that have played havoc with its fitness and combat-readiness, to the point where it became the butt of jokes throughout Starfleet.

Soon it had become a dumping ground for personnel who were considered too disruptive or incompetent for front-line service, but who had not done anything sufficiently egregious to warrant being discharged. Eventually, Starfleet Command sent down an order to retire the embarrassing vessel, to the relief of all involved. But it was not to be. At the last moment, the Federation Council countermanded the directive: a political use had been found for the vessel. The Edsel's new continuing mission:

To stay in permanent parking orbit around the vacation planet of Atlantis

To deal with vapid and overbearing VIPs

To boldly give tours of an "Authentic Federation Starship"!

STAR REKT takes MUSIC PARODY videos to the final frontier! (video interview with IAN RAMSEY)

star trek funny song

I first discovered STAR REKT back in 2021 when someone posted to Facebook a link to a Star Trek -themed music video parodying the 1975 song by The Four Seasons , “ December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) .” But instead of “Night,” the lyric was changed to “Fight” and melodically recounted Kirk’s battle with the Gorn following the attack on Cestus III in the 1967 TOS episode “Arena.”

Now, I’d seen a whole bunch of Star Trek music videos over the years…many of them simply montages of edited clips from episodes and movies played over pop songs. ( I even made one myself back in 2002 from Trek home recordings off of VHS tapes!) I’ve also watched a wide variety of Trek music PARODY videos, usually when someone writes new lyrics to an existing song. This playlist from YouTube shows a good selection of what’s out there. What you’ll notice is that these parody videos are usually either edited clips from Trek episodes/movies OR fans doing cosplay singing (or lip synching) to their own song in a series of cuts.

But what struck me about Star Rekt is that this fellow recorded himself in costume in front of a green screen and intercut those shots with clips from TOS (and eventually other TV series and movies) to create a “hybrid” of sorts. This fresh approach really stood out for me—along with his great parody lyrics, good singing, and the quality of the video editing. Take a look first at “Oh, What a Fight…”

By the time I’d found out about this guy and his videos during the summer, he’d already posted two others. The first was “I Kissed a Borg” (based on “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry)…

The other was “Trill All the Klingons Want” (parodying””Girl All the Bad Guys Want” by Bowling For Soup)…

Three awesome parody music videos in four months? This funny guy was SERIOUS! And he had already covered TOS, TNG , and DS9 . What else would he come up with? I immediately subscribed to his channel and eagerly waited for his next offering. It came three months later, and we were back to TNG with a dash of DS9 and Voyager thrown in. How did he cover all three? Well, they all have a Holocek (or Holosuite), and thus we were treated to a parody of the song “Photograph” by Nickelback…

At the time I’m writing this blog, Star Rekt has now released NINE parody music videos in total. If you want to see the rest, check out this playlist for parodies that spotlight some of the Star Trek features as well as the Enterprise TV series. This guy also did an off-the-wall video of himself mixing Star Trek -themed drinks and doing trivia for an hour while getting progressively plastered. It’s worth checking out.

Anyway, I tracked down “Star Rekt” and discovered his real name is IAN RAMSEY, and he does everything from here…

Awesome stuff! I’m a HUGE FAN of Parodies! Ever since weird Al Yankovic. Appreciate the warning about Randy though! But, for you Jonathan, here’s one of my favorites, a “libertarian” who does all the acting & singing. Very similar to these videos by Ian Ramsey. Here’s a link to the playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL02D02B9A144182DB Watching the interview now, yes, I can type at the same time, isn’t tech great?

Well, even though I disagree with nearly everything Remy sings and libertarians scare the crap out of me, I will definitely admit that he’s a talented singer and video producer. I just watched his latest five videos (back through the “It’s Magic” one). Now it’s your turn to watch some Randy Rainbow, DL! 🙂

Ok Jonathan, challenge accepted, but, I’ll watch tomorrow. Thanks for taking a look.

I’m guessing you’ll cringe just as much as I did at your guy…but maybe not. 🙂

INTRODUCTION

Was it simply "The Greed Decade" as many like to claim? I think not - the '80s saw the emergence of yuppies, but also Red Wedge, the Greenham Common Peace Women , and increasing concern for the environment. It may be convenient to scapegoat the '80s as the cause of all known ills, but the reality of the decade was far different - absolute bedlam, as Right fought Left, idealism fought corporate ambition. The election of Ronald Reagan as American President in 1980, and his second victory in 1984, had a far more decisive effect on the international political landscape than the three successive general election victories of UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1979, 1983 and 1987.

Fashion came fast and furious - deelyboppers , ra ra skirts with lycra leggings, Swatch watches, pixie boots, jelly shoes, shoulder pads , blonde highlights, hair gel, hair mousse, men in pink, goths, shell suits, New Romantics , donkey jackets , leg warmers ...

Musically, the 1980s saw the beginnings of House Music , the exciting and still evolving world of synths taking centre stage, the evolvement of Rap music into the fully-fledged Hip Hop scene, Band Aid and Live Aid , great Indie, startling Acid House, and Raves...

At the amusement arcades, Space Invaders ran rampant and we first met Pac-Man ...

And there was so much more! The decade truly had something for everyone - and provided a welcome escape for a while from the long-running and boring saga of flared trousers as fashion, begun back in the 1960s!

It was a brilliant decade for telly - bringing us such wonders as A Very Peculiar Practice , Inspector Morse , Spitting Image , Hot Metal , The BeiderbeckeTrilogy and Edge of Darkness .

The 1980s also saw the creation of The Simpsons , Twin Peaks , and other wonderful (often groundbreaking) American TV shows like Kate & Allie , Cheers , The Golden Girls , Married... With Children, The Cosby Show , Roseanne , and Hill Street Blues .

The '80s gave us some wonderful UK TV ads. Remember Ted Moult advertising double glazing at the Tan Hall Inn with "Fit The Best - Everest" ? Remember the Weetabix gang ? Remember the Scotch video tape skeleton ("Re-record, not fade away"?). Remember the romantic yuppie couple in the coffee ads? And what about "Lotta Bottle" ?

In fact, the '80s totally transformed our telly viewing, bringing us Channel 4 and Sky TV.

The '80s were a fascinating time for science and technology! Video recorders became widespread, the Sony Walkman arrived, the first hand-held mobile phones hit the streets (expensive analogue bricks!), the ZX Spectrum , Game Boy and the World Wide Web (Thanks, Sir Tim Berners-Lee!) were invented, the first computer mouse eeked its way into our homes and Sir Alec Jeffreys accidentally discovered DNA fingerprinting . It's all here!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Star trek: strange new worlds ' musical episode songs, ranked, strange new worlds ' "subspace rhapsody" delivered the star trek , but how did its musical numbers fare here's our definitive ranking..

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Strange New Worlds ’ musical episode dropped this week , giving us a wonderful, all-singing all-dancing hour of Star Trek . But now that we’ve had a chance to give the Enterprise crew’s showtunes a few repeat listens , we’re ready to declare which hit the high notes and which should’ve been left on the cutting room floor.

Of course, as we’re going to discuss the songs and their context in the episode, if you’ve not yet seen “Subspace Rhapsody” consider this your final curtain call...

10) “Connect to Your Truth”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Una and Lieutenant Kirk are a fascinating pairing for a musical number, but this song is maybe the only real duff note in the whole episode, unfortunately. It’s just a bit too... twee, which is awkward for two characters who are anything but twee. Oddly, it’s a song that feels more about being in a musical in a fake way, rather than the actual songs in the soundtrack about being in a musical.

9) “Keeping Secrets”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Giving La’an and Una a song together makes a ton of sense—they’re consistently one of the more explored relationships on the show, and putting it through Una’s perspective lets her reflect on her own journey this season that puts a warm lens on her connection to La’an. It’s just a little sedate for a song that’s meant to be imploring people to trust each other and not be so guarded, never quite getting to the moment it wants to build to as an emotional release.

8) “Private Conversation”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

The real shame here is that this doesn’t go on longer—there’s a great little tit-for-tat in the vibe here between Anson Mount and Melanie Scrofano. It just gets cut off as it’s getting really good, and it’s such a shame... even though Captain Pike appreciates the save.

7) “ Strange New Worlds Main Theme (Subspace Rhapsody Version) ”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Maybe it’s cheating to put the title theme on here, but hey, they did a special a capella version, so it is technically it’s a new song for the episode! And it’s very good, mostly because the Strange New Worlds theme is already very good.

6) “I’m the X”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Giving Spock a reserved, almost mournful rumination on his relationship with Chapel falling apart is a great idea, especially as this is arguably the turning point in the character’s arc towards the one we know in the original Trek . But it’s also a very Spock song—starting off almost clipped and reserved before he gets to really ba re his heart and sing, no longer able to hold his emotions in. The few equation puns in the lyrics are just icing on the cake.

5) “Keep Us Connected”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Celia Rose Gooding is a remarkable vocalist, and they get to really belt out some notes in Uhura’s reflective solo piece about her role as the glue that keeps the Enterprise crew together being their comms officer. Also maybe the first and only time someone in Star Trek is going to sing about their entire family violently exploding in a shuttlecraft accident, and that’s kind of amazing.

4) “I’m Ready”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

I would say most of the songs in “Subspace Rhapsody” are great, but Nurse Chapel’s lounge number about realizing she’s willing to put aside her feelings for Spock to pursue her career dreams is where the episode really clicked into place for me. Some great choreography, a great performance by Jess Bush—the moment she sings “If I need to leave you/I won’t fight it” and realizes what she’s just said to Spock is a great little character beat. This one’s got the drama in ways few of the other tracks do.

3) “How Would That Feel”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

Christina Chong alongside Gooding is the other really strong vocalist of the cast, and that’s on full display here in this power ballad/I want song. It’s perfect for La’an, this steady build up as she breaks her own walls down to yearn for what she could be if she opened herself to others. And how much she wants to sleep with Jim Kirk, of course.

2) “Status Report”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

The first proper song of the episode is one of its best because it’s the only song that actually plays with Star Trek logic and language on the whole soundtrack—pretty much all of the other tracks are emotional, character-driven songs. It’s such a clever way of watching the premise of the episode wrap itself around the characters, as they try to do what any good Star Trek character would do in this situation: investigate and analyz e.

And those harmonies at the end? Mwah . Wonderful.

1) “We Are One”

Image for article titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Songs, Ranked

It’s almost unfair to put anything else—the triumphant ensemble piece is the joyous climax of “Subspace Rhapsody” and everyone gets a little moment to shine, as Uhura guides her chorus to freedom. It’s got a little bit of everything, some nice harmonies, a good chance for everyone to get a moment of their own, and some great jokes, especially for Spock getting increasingly grumpy.

Plus, I’m sorry: if you don’t like the boy band Klingon interlude, I don’t know what to tell you. I was right there with Sam Kirk bobbing my head.

10 best star trek parodies all fans should watch.

Star Trek has been a cultural institution for 57 years, spawning Muppet spoofs, bad impressions, cartoon caricatures, and pitch-perfect parodies.

  • Star Trek: Lower Decks is the greatest and most affectionate parody of the franchise, but its official canon status sets it apart from other spoofs.
  • Various TV shows and sketches, like Chewin' The Fat, The Muppet Show, and The Adam & Joe Show, have successfully parodied Star Trek with humor and deep-cut references.
  • Other parodies, such as Ömer the Tourist in Star Trek and Black Mirror's USS Callister, offer unique and sometimes dark takes on Star Trek, pushing the boundaries of the franchise.

Star Trek has been a cultural institution for nearly 60 years, and its place in the popular imagination has spawned all manner of spoofs and parodies. Arguably Star Trek: Lower Decks is the greatest parody of all time, given how it perfectly, and affectionately, sends up the entire franchise. However, its official placing within the Star Trek canon means that it wouldn't be fair to place it alongside the countless comedy sketches, movies and sitcoms that have sent up the show over the past 57 years.

There's a long history of William Shatner impressions of varying quality, with the most notable being Jim Carrey's from In Living Color . While the jokes in those sketches, such as "The Wrath of Farrakhan" haven't aged brilliantly, Carrey's impression is certainly worth checking out. Some Star Trek parodies have gone on to spawn a life of their own, with full series orders, merchandise, and a fiercely dedicated fanbase all of their own. Meanwhile, other parodies have said all they have to say about Star Trek in 5 gag-filled minutes, and move on to their next target.

9 Chewin' The Fat - Taysiders In Space

The casting of Martin Quinn means that Star Trek : Strange New Worlds' Scotty is now Scottish , after decades of being played by a Canadian and an Englishman. BBC Scotland comedy sketch show Chewin' The Fat depicted a whole crew of Scottish Starfleet officers in the memorable sketch, "Taysiders in Space". Based on the premise that Starfleet Academy opened up a new campus in Carnoustie in Scotland, the sketch depicts the first batch of recruits setting out across the universe, with their phasers set to " malky " - that's kill in Scottish. It's a bracingly Earthy take on Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek vision with some big laughs.

8 The Muppet Show - Pigs In Space

Pigs in Space has been a stalwart of The Muppet Show since season 2, and while it has sent up all manner of sci-fi movies and TV shows, Miss Piggy's starship is called the Swinetrek, directly linking it to Star Trek . Not only that, but the character of Captain Link Hogthrob is very clearly based on William Shatner's Captain Kirk and just like Star Trek , it spawned numerous spinoffs. In the 1990s, ABC revived The Muppet Show as Muppets Tonight , which ran between 1996 and 1998. Pigs in Space was also updated in the revival, with the subtitle Deep Dish Nine and the character of Captain Pighead to better reflect 90s Star Trek .

7 The Adam & Joe Show - Stuffed Trek: The Toy Generation

The Adam & Joe Show was a cult TV comedy magazine show that was famous for spoofing popular movies and TV shows with toys long before Robot Chicken . In their sketch "Stuffed Trek: The Toy Generation", Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish sent up Star Trek: The Next Generation with some fairly deep-cut references. The mention of " more terrible movies " and irritation at Lt. Commander Da-Toy's newfound sense of humor say it all about Adam and Joe's opinions on Star Trek Generations . Interestingly, decades later and with successful feature films under his belt, Joe Cornish was approached to direct Star Trek Beyond , but he turned it down.

6 Ömer the Tourist in Star Trek

Turkish cinema is notorious for its copyright-skirting parodies of Western IPs, and not even Star Trek could escape this treatment. Ömer the Tourist in Star Trek is, like the title suggests, a film that places the titular Turkish comedy character into an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series . More specifically, "The Man Trap", complete with Salt Vampire and seductive apparitions. Watching it does feel like experiencing a feverish mashup of TOS season 1, but it's never boring. The Turkish Star Trek parody is also a charming buddy comedy between Ömer and Mr. Spack, and there's been nothing quite like it before or since.

5 Black Mirror - USS Callister

"USS Callister", Charlie Brooker's pitch-perfect parody of Star Trek: The Original Series had a predictably dark edge. As a Star Trek parody it worked on multiple levels, from the recognizable tropes to the much deeper critiques of its sexual politics. It's also a smart and thought-provoking take on Star Trek 's holodeck technology and the rights of those whose images are stored inside. The characters that Robert Daly (Jesse Plemmons) interacts with inside his simulation are avatars for his co-workers, who retain the memories of the cruelty he metes out to them. Star Trek has yet to fully interrogate the ethics of its holodeck technology in such a complex and engaging way, making this a must-watch episode for fans.

4 Animaniacs - Star Truck

Animaniacs' parody of Star Trek is an absolute riot as the Warner Brothers (and sister) cause chaos aboard the starship from their favorite TV show. It's full of copyright skirting names like Mr. Squat and Captain Kork, alongside typically meta-references such as a nod to " Ricardo Montalban and his plastic chest ." There's also a hilariously blunt joke about the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode "City on the Edge of Forever". The parody featured some incredible impressions of William Shatner, DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy by Maurice LaMarche that perfectly capture each of their iconic Star Trek roles.

3 Seth McFarlane's The Orville

The Orville 's reputation as a Star Trek parody initially hampered its ability to be taken seriously as a sci-fi show in its own right. There are strong Star Trek links to The Orville from guest appearances by notable stars, and creative input from 90s Trek legends Brannon Braga, Jonathan Frakes, and Robert Duncan McNeill behind the scenes. Seth McFarlane has a deep love of Star Trek and that really shines through in some of the affectionate jibes at tired old Trek tropes. However, The Orville is more rewarding than a mere parody because it recaptured the feel of the episodic, planet-of-the-week style Star Trek long before the debut of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in 2022.

2 Futurama - Where No Fan Has Gone Before

Both Matt Groening's beloved animated series The Simpsons and Futurama have featured various nods to Star Trek over the years, but "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" is the peak. In the episode, the Planet Express crew discovers the original Star Trek actors alive and well on the planet Omega 3, where they've been resurrected by alien superfan Mellvar. Reuniting the majority of the living Star Trek: The Original Series Cast - minus James Doohan - it was an episode packed full of references and big laughs. From Philip J Fry (Billy West) in Captain Pike's bleep-bleep chair to the killer final line delivered by William Shatner, it's an absolute hoot.

1 Galaxy Quest

While Futurama may have had the benefit of the involvement of the original cast, Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek parody . The beloved sci-fi movie, which has spawned its own dedicated fanbase, was released in 1999. Effectively putting a Star Trek spin on the Steve Martin movie The Three Amigos, it sent the cast of a popular sci-fi show into space to defend a planet from an alien warlord. It's full of acutely observed jokes about conventions and fans, and it's steeped in various well-worn Star Trek tropes. Tim Allen is perfectly cast as the William Shatneresque character while Alan Rickman's snobbish actor is archly funny. It's the funniest Star Trek parody of all time, but Galaxy Quest is also a joyous homage to the show and its hugely positive impact on fans.

Infinite Jests in Infinite Combinations: Looking Back at Star Trek Parodies

We all know about SNL and "USS Callister," but did you know about the less famous 'Trek' parodies criss-cross the quadrant as well?

Cover001

StarTrek.com

Star Trek parodies are almost as old as Trek itself and in all of its many iterations, the show has made easy fodder for standups and sketch shows. Spoofs like the Saturday Night Live sketches with John Belushi as Captain Kirk and William Shatner himself insisting fans “get a life!” are part of the cultural firmament, and new takes like Black Mirror ’s “ USS Callister ” give the tropes a 21st century spin.

But the well of Trek parody goes far deeper than those better-known examples, and as you’ll see below there are obscure, awkward and just plain weird takes on the U.S.S. Enterprise stretching across the decades.

In Living Color - “The Wrath of Farrakhan”

From the 1970s to the 90s a Star Trek parody was de rigeur for a sketch show, and In Living Color is no exception. “The Wrath of Farrakhan” was one of the first sketches made for the show, and the show's adept take on race is shown with Jim Carrey’s portrayal of a hapless Captain Kirk who doesn’t know what to do with himself once he gets knocked off his captain’s chair by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. It hasn’t aged perfectly (Sulu’s sexual desperation is tin-eared in 2019, and Louis Farrakahn is a complicated figure)  but the sketch is worth it just to see Uhura go off on Kirk and Spock point out that, despite being the most qualified person on the bridge, somehow Spock is only second in command.

Duckman - “Where No Duckman Has Gone Before”

The irreverent animated seiries Duckman was great when it first aired in the early 1990s. Jason Alexander has an effortless charm as the acerbic title character, Greggory Berger is perfect as Duckman’s deadpan foil Cornfed Pig, and the show’s view of modern society as a baffling fail-train still rings true decades later. Duckman’s empty swagger works perfectly for an ersatz, fourth-wall-breaking Kirk, Cornfed is a great Spock, and the choice of Gilbert Gottfried as a loudly unhinged not-McCoy is inspired. Plus there’s Fluffy and Uranus as redshirts, Tim Curry as Khan Chicken, a Marina Sirtis voice cameo and the immortal line “of all the soles I’ve tasted, his had the most..cumin.” It even ends with a live-action Leonard Nimoy cameo! Which leads us to...

The Carol Burnett Show - Mr. Spock’s Surprise Visit

Everything leading up to the reveal of Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock serves to remind us what a gift Carol Burnett was to comedy, hamming it up with an invisible baby and selling it for every second of the sketch. It was, perhaps, one of the best sendups of the name-sharing Mr. Spock and contemporaneous baby expert Dr. Spock we've seen to this day.

Spitting Image

North America didn’t have a monopoly on Trek parodies. In the 1980s Spitting Image skewered British politicians and celebrities, including a peek into the neuroses of “Leo-Nard Neemoy,” as they call him in the clip.

Like most good ideas on UK television, there was soon a short-lived American version. The American version of Spitting Image produced a spoof called “The 1987 American Movie Awards” where an ersatz Oscars show hosted by David Frost is hijacked by Leonard Nimoy and a passel of also-ran actors indignant they weren’t included in the festivities. Despite its age, it’s still quite funny, though considerably less biting than its British predecessor. “Nimoy” also looks great sporting a Starfleet regulation smoking jacket.

The Care Bears - Various Episodes

No-one should be surprised the Care Bears spoofed Star Trek; by this point Trek was a known pop culture phenomenon and was low-hanging fruit for TV writers on every rung of the career ladder. But what is surprising is that they milked the concept in almost a dozen saccharine-filled toyetic segments without getting sued. If you can get through this playlist, you’re a better person than I, or at least have a higher pain tolerance.

SCTV - “Check Please”

It’s only a commercial for a non-existent sitcom starring Spock and McCoy running a diner called “Check Please,” but in the space of about a minute Dave Thomas delivers a credible imitation of Dr. McCoy and Harold Ramis nearly convinces audiences that Spock would make a decent waiter!

The Muppet Show - "Pigs In Space"

Ok, this is a bit of a stretch, but there’s no way Pigs In Space would exist without Star Trek . Besides, the parallels between Link Hogthrob and Kirk are obvious, as are those between McCoy and Dr. Julius Strangepork. The ship is even called the Swine Trek!

The Firm - "Star Trekkin’"

UK band The Firm released this novelty hit in 1987 and it forever became the anthem of dank Star Trek clubs shortly thereafter. In the time before the infinite choices of the internet, this tune simultaneously increased one’s nerd shame while validating dedication to all things Trek . The British public seemed to enjoy the song as it spent two weeks at the top of the charts. The creators of the song decided not to appear on Top of the Pops (a TRL -esque British show) and instead commissioned a charmingly cheap music video. The stop motion and DIY puppetry made for a potent mix paired with one of the nerdiest earworms made up to that time. Looked at from a 2019 perspective, one could call "Star Trekkin’" one of the original memes.

JoJo Siwa drives a car covered in her own face.

Actually, the child star turned children’s entertainer drives a couple. On a Thursday afternoon in late March, it’s a Tesla Model X wrapped in a patchwork of her blond, ponytail-topped head complete with a signature hair bow. The tire rims are a kaleidoscope of cotton candy colors.

Another car, a Lamborghini, was in the shop getting re-wrapped with a fresh design inspired by “Karma,” the synth-heavy dance track she released on Friday.

Ms. Siwa is currently doing a bit of re-wrapping herself.

“ The following content is not made for children and may be disturbing or offensive to some viewers,” Ms. Siwa, who is about a month shy of her 21st birthday, posted on Instagram earlier this year when she began teasing her new single. “It may contain sexual themes, violence, strong language, traumatic scenarios and flashing lights.”

In reality, what “Karma” does contain is Ms. Siwa saying precisely one swear word.

Ms. Siwa on a small platform beside a D.J. booth, speaking into a mic before a large crowd.

She eschews another for a more PG-13 modification, “effed.” Her sparkly costumes are tight, vaguely amphibian and skin-baring, though perhaps no more so than those she donned as a child on the reality show “Dance Moms.” In the music video, she dances aggressively on a desert island to a routine choreographed by Richy Jackson, a longtime Lady Gaga collaborator. Black makeup, painted into geometric designs on her face, makes her look like a forgotten member of Kiss. (Gene Simmons, the band’s frontman, approves .) She humps a woman on the sand.

“I was a bad girl, I did some bad things,” Ms. Siwa sings in the opening line of the song.

Not everyone is so sure. “‘I was a bad girl’ YOU WERE SELLING GLITTER BOWS AT WALMART,” reads one comment on Ms. Siwa’s YouTube channel.

Ms. Siwa burst onto the scene as a mouthy 11-year-old in “Dance Moms” in 2015. When she left the show the next year, she signed a deal with Nickelodeon. From there, she started a wildly successful career as children’s entertainer, performing family-friendly songs around the world and building a fan base of tween girls to whom she has sold over 80 million bows .

“I am the first, per se, first child star that is going from not a character to still not a character,” Ms. Siwa said, drawing a contrast between herself and Miley Cyrus, the former Disney Channel actor who shed her sugary sweet alter ego Hannah Montana and promptly cannonballed into adulthood with a series of scandals that fed tabloids for years. Ms. Siwa, who at first modeled her career on Hannah Montana , is now after her own Miley moment.

When Ms. Cyrus’s album “Can’t Be Tamed” came out in 2010, it was far from a critical success . The years that followed were tumultuous and didn’t always foretell the Grammy-winning artist she would later go on to become. It’s a notoriously tricky transition that has ensnared plenty of young people — Britney Spears, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, to name a few.

Now a familiar trope in the pop-culture canon, this shift can feel stilted when it’s happening in real time. That may be unavoidable.

“You don’t need to pretend that there’s this organic or authentic self that is somehow out there,” said Carolyn Chernoff, a sociologist who once taught a class at Skidmore College entirely on the subject of Ms. Cyrus. “It’s all this performance to manufacture a Miley moment. Of course, it’s manufactured, calculated.”

At Studio Siwa, Ms. Siwa’s personal rehearsal space in Burbank, Calif., the young singer, wearing loose black sweatpants and a pile of chain necklaces, offered a brief tour. A glittery red, white and blue piano sits in one corner of the space, but it’s fake, a leftover stage prop. In a makeshift archive in a backroom, there are other largely untouched things. Shelves reaching to the ceiling are filled with Siwa-branded dolls, pillows and headphones. Racks of old costumes line the perimeter.

“We would zip-tie it,” Ms. Siwa said, pulling out a hefty, bedazzled bow headpiece from one of her tour costumes and flipping it over to reveal dirt and sweat stains. It hurt her scalp “so bad, but in the best way possible,” she added. “Wouldn’t change it for anything.”

She speaks with the same unflinching positivity about her time on “Dance Moms,” though viewers of the show might have a grimmer recollection of Ms. Siwa’s time onscreen. In Ms. Siwa’s first appearance, her dance teacher, Abby Lee Miller, called her “obnoxious.”

“If you are good at what you do, you don’t have a healthy relationship with it,” Ms. Siwa said, likening her time on the show to an athlete being pushed by a coach to train even harder after losing a game.

In 2021, Ms. Siwa and her mother tried their luck at hosting their own reality show. Eleven girls competed on the Peacock show “Siwas Dance Pop Revolution” in the hopes of joining a new children’s musical group, XOMG POP!

In an interview this year with Rolling Stone , a member of the group and her mother accused them of mistreatment, including insults and punishing rehearsal schedules. The Siwas denied all allegations through a lawyer to Rolling Stone. When asked about them in her studio, Ms. Siwa echoed those denials, claiming that the mother and daughter, Anjie and Leigha Sanderson, were “dropped” by their lawyer “because they had an invalid case .”

In an interview with The New York Times, Anjie Sanderson denied this, saying that she and her lawyer had ultimately decided that pursuing further legal action was not in her family’s best interest.

Ms. Siwa said that the reason she had previously not spoken publicly about the incident is “because there was a kid on the line.” That child, Leigha Sanderson, now 16, said she thought Ms. Siwa’s latest musical efforts were “just trying to distract people from what actually is happening.”

The potential costs of being a child star were recently put in stark terms with the release of the documentary series “ Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, ” which surfaced allegations of harassment and abuse at Nickelodeon in the 1990s and 2000s. Ms. Siwa described herself as “one of the lucky ones,” crediting her mother, Jessalynn Siwa, with helping her navigate the industry unscathed.

These days, Ms. Siwa finds herself having to contend with the warped way much of her audience views her.

“I’ve always physically looked younger,” Ms. Siwa said. “I was 18, wearing a bow in my hair, looking like a 12-year-old, but I’ve always mentally worked as an adult.”

“I’ve always joked that I’m 10 years ahead,” she continued. “When I was 9, I was 19, and when I was 19, I was 29, you know what I mean? Now 20, and I feel like I’m 30 .”

Partaking in a rite of adulthood, she said she recently got two tattoos. “It was very impulsive, went into a janky shop in Florida and was like, ‘Let’s go,’” Ms. Siwa said. On her left hand is the name and release date of her debut children’s single, “Boomerang.” On the other, the same details about “Karma.” (The release date is technically wrong, Ms. Siwa said, because she didn’t account for time zones.)

When she was 17, Ms. Siwa, who identifies as a lesbian, came out over the course of several TikTok lip-sync videos and by tweeting a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt that said “Best Gay Cousin.” That fall, she placed second on “Dancing With the Stars” as part of the show’s first ever same-sex couple . But she didn’t exactly ascend to gay icon status. In a recent interview, she told Billboard News that she “wanted to start a new genre of music” called “gay pop,” prompting a sidelong glance from the longtime gay pop artists Tegan and Sara .

Over the past few years, she has been more open about her sexuality and dating life. “I present as a top,” Ms. Siwa said, using the popular parlance to describe her sexual preferences. “Outside, for sure I’m a top. Inside, bottom nation.”

But when it comes to the particulars of her relationships, she says she’s become a bit more circumspect, and she has some strict rules she abides by. No romantic DM slides. She won’t ever make the first move.

“I’m scared of rejection, of course, but more so, like, I just don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable,” Ms. Siwa said. She tells dates they need to grant her “access” before she’ll get even a little physical, Ms. Siwa said, describing her own personal consent system.

“The world is scary. You got to be careful, and I have horrible trust issues,” Ms. Siwa said. “I don’t want someone to be able to say she touched me and I didn’t want it. I would never do that, but anyone can say anything they want,” she added. She lives with “a lot of paranoia.”

But after more than a decade of being in the public eye, Ms. Siwa has largely accepted a certain degree of vulnerability. At times she seems to welcome, or even court, the scrutiny. As people tore into “Karma” online, Ms. Siwa shrugged off the criticism.

“No one’s going to be like, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing,” Ms. Siwa said. “It’s not designed for people to say that. It’s designed for people to say, ‘What?’ ‘Why?’ ‘Huh?’” Besides, she added, “My views have never been higher.”

The song did have some immediate fans, though: kids, the very same audience Ms. Siwa was intending to abandon. At a charity dance class hosted last month at Studio Siwa, a gaggle of 12-year-old girls burst into the opening line of the song when asked if they knew the words. The full track hadn’t even been released yet. Children have begun to send her videos singing the single with a slight lyrical change — “karma’s a beach” — Ms. Siwa said. That’s fine with her, she said. Her new music is for “whoever wants to enjoy it.”

So who is JoJo Siwa now?

It seems an unfair question to pose to someone still too young to legally buy a beer. That fact was striking when, on Thursday evening in West Hollywood, Ms. Siwa popped by several clubs to celebrate the release of her new music. An Instagram ad for the events initially warned that guests needed to be 21 or older to attend. Technically, as several commenters pointed out, that rule would bar Ms. Siwa from her own event.

She drove herself to the party, her hair piled in a lofty pompadour atop her head. Ms. Siwa’s Lamborghini was back from the shop, covered in new photos of her face.

Laufey as Screen ‘Goddess’: How Working With ‘Past Lives’ Director Celine Song and Co-Star Will Gao on Music Video Gave the Singer Her First Real Acting Gig

Laufey being directed by Celine Song for 'Goddess' video will gao

The title of Laufey ‘s new single and music video, “Goddess,” is intended somewhat ironically. The storyline of both has a star feeling she’s let down a lover who only wanted the glamorous version of her he’d seen on stage, not the everyday person. But, in the unironic sense, Laufey does take a big step toward possibly becoming a screen goddess, of sorts, by having starred in a short film that may serve as a calling card for a possible move into film or TV roles.

Popular on Variety

“Goddess” is the leadoff single from a deluxe edition of Laufey’s Grammy-winning “Bewitched” album, which arrives later this month, expanding upon the singer-songwriter’s heralded fusion of the jazz, pop-standards and classical styles she grew up mastering and the contemporary, Swiftie-era pop she equally loves.

Laufey got on a Zoom with Variety on the eve of the “Goddess” short coming out to discuss hooking up with Song and Gao, her acting aspirations, and instantly selling out her summer Hollywood Bowl show with the LA Philharmonic.

How did the working relationship with Celine Song come about?

So it’s fair to say you were a fan of “Past Lives,” along with just about everybody else who saw it last year?

Oh my God, yes. I mean, you know, so much of — all of — the music I write about is about these experiences of love that aren’t quite perfect… these things that could have happened. I think so much about the other ways in which my life could have turned out if I would’ve made different moves. Celine illustrated that so well with “Past Lives” and the way that she directed a movie that is, in a way, a love story was just really clever and refreshing, and it’s something I try to do with my music.

Was Will Gao somebody you knew of from his show, “Heartstopper”? Or was that Celine’s idea?

I actually got to know Will as a musician. He and his sister, Olivia (Hardy), are in a band called the Wasia Project. I think he followed me and a lot of my fans were like, “Oh my God, Will from ‘Heartstopper’ follows you? And I was like, “Oh my God, I didn’t even realize.” I discovered their band on Spotify one day, and it then turned out that we were on the same label, so I was like, “Oh my God, we must hang out.” I messaged them when I was in London over a year ago, and we hung out and then we just became friends through that. I mean, the music that we all make is quite similar. We’ve all had classical music backgrounds, but are writing more in a pop world now, but definitely blend those worlds together. Upon finding their music, I just thought it was the most beautiful, and they were all my top listens last year on Spotify. And their band is called Wasia Project and I am — as they say — Wasian as well, which is half white and half Asian, so I think we just really bonded over those experiences as well. They, too, are half Chinese. So when it came to finding somebody for the music video and working with Celine, it was quite important to me to find somebody who also had that kind of shared background of coming from Asian descent. And I thought Will would be one of the most perfect options. Also, Wasia Project is supporting me on tour soon. So it was kind of like a fun way of keeping it in the family.

Some people like to star in their more dramatic music videos and some people don’t. It seems like there’s been a lot of dramatic videos where it’s like, “Well, I’m gonna cast two actors as the dramatic leads,” like “All Too Well” from Taylor Swift. But you went for it. So did that feel like, “This is a bold choice I’m taking,” or “Actually, this is the obvious first step in my acting career”?

It’s a very naturalistic style of acting. You’re not overdoing anything. And that’s not always the way somebody does it the first time out. Did you have encouragement from her in that, or just instinctively knew the song will help sell the emotion and you didn’t need to overplay it? Even though you do have some tears at the end.

Yeah, there’s so much emotion in the song. There’s a lot of stillness in the song as well. So I think overacting those emotions wouldn’t lend itself to that kind of music. Most of the song is just a melody and piano and a lot of space, and I think any kind of sharp movements or deep, rash emotions just wouldn’t fit that style. Like you mentioned with the tears, it’s not until the very end when the song grows and gets bigger that the emotions kind of grow with it. Because I think for me, what I tend to do is, I really suppress a lot of those emotions and I kind of have almost this… not straight face, but almost this face of wonder, a lot, through my experiences with love. And I really wanted to (carry) that through the acting and the video.

Lyrically, “Goddess” has to be your first song that will command a parental warning label, with the F-word.

Definitely. I was a little bit wary of that, and words like that, I use them sparingly, because I don’t want to overuse them and I don’t want them to lose meaning. But this song felt like it needed it.

People will take this as a pretty autobiographical song. Maybe all of your songs have been that way, as you’ve explained them in concert, but this one is pretty explicitly so. It’s almost like a “Dear John” kind of song, about feeling wrecked by a bad experience with someone as a young person. But on top of that, you’re presenting it as from the point of view of a star, which is not everybody’s everyday experience.

No, it’s not. I definitely thought a lot about it when putting this song out. It’s definitely the most mature version of myself that I’ve presented thus far. You know, I think so much about relatability when it comes to songwriting, and this experience of being in the limelight isn’t necessarily everyone’s experience. But I think the way I write songs, though they’re autobiographical, I always hope and make a point out of making sure that a lot of people can find points of relating to it. I think in this day and age, we put on a face, we put on makeup and a perfect outfit and depict ourselves a certain way on the internet or at a party or whatnot, and then we come home and we take all that makeup off and all the clothing off. And whether you’re in the limelight or not, I think that’s a shared feeling, of this juxtaposition of being perfect out to the world and feeling insecure about yourself when you’re just on your own and not wearing all that makeup that you present to the public.

I had no help with that, which I’m very, very proud of. We didn’t plan to do a crying scene. If anything, I was just meant to kind of stand very still, like a statue. And then we were just shooting it for a while and it was the very last thing that we did that day. And I was like, I feel like I can do it. I was just standing there for so long and was like, “I wonder what Celine will say if I just cry right now.” And I was like: I think I can do it. I just blinked and it just kind of all came out — and I kind of had a lot of fun with it. It was satisfying to be able to pull that emotion out. I kind of smiled through it, almost, both as a personal victory, but also because I think it shows kind of that pain of still needing to be that star on stage and wearing all that makeup and smiling through it, even if you’re having a rough day. And then Celine was like, “Do you think you can do that again?” And I was like, “Yeah, I think I can.” It was very fun. I think I shocked myself, even.

As far as acting, you said you’ve got the bug, so did you have a bug before this and it just kind of accelerated it? And do you have plans now?

I mean, I definitely had an interest, but I hadn’t really had the opportunity to test it out, outside of music videos. And I think this was the first one where I’m not mouthing any words to the song. This was just telling the story through actions, really. And working with a director like Celine, who is used to working with just actors, not necessarily musicians, I was so scared before the video. It turned out I just really enjoyed it, and it’s definitely something I look forward to, hopefully, doing more in the future. It just has to be the right role in the right moment.

Last time we talked, we discussed you wanting to do scoring and do film songs, but it never occurred to me to ask about acting too. So, now we know.

Oh, yeah. I mean, my dream would be to act in something, or even do kind of a guest role, and couple that with writing something for a film or for TV. I think it’s always so magical when there’s some sort of thing like that where an artist contributes musically, but also has a role in the film as well.

To ask just a little about the deluxe version of your album that comes out later this month, you’ve got the four new tracks, of which “Goddess” is one. Another is “Bored,” which you’ve already been performing live a little bit. ..

Yes, I’ve done it twice now.

“Bored” is lighter, maybe closer to the sort of thing that people are used to hearing from you, even though, as a fun song, it may have come out of a not so fun situation.

Looking ahead to your summer touring: We reviewed your show in L.A. at the Ford last year with the LA Phil, and our take was, why isn’t this already across the street at the Hollywood Bowl? And now we see you playing with the Phil for a sold-out night this summer, and the price of resale tickets even for that is through the roof, and so our take would have to be: Why aren’t there two nights at the Bowl? Or three?

It is truly, truly wild. I never ever thought that it would get to this scale. And I feel like every single day I wake up and I’m shocked by something new and exciting. Especially to get to sell out the Bowl, and play with the LA Phil, it’s really special to me, just on a personal level. Because I grew up within the walls of an orchestra, and one of my goals as an artist and guiding lights is to bring this orchestral sound to Gen Z. So the fact that the biggest concert that I’ll play to this point is with the LA Phil is really, really special.

William Shatner is beaming in to see the 2024 total solar eclipse from Indiana (video)

Captain Kirk got philosophical when speaking about the upcoming solar eclipse, saying it's not worth worrying about clouds.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Of the many cities and small towns along the April 8 solar eclipse's path of totality, Capt. Kirk is only beaming down to one. Bloomington, Indiana, will play host to the original "Star Trek" captain, William Shatner.

Indiana University (IU) is marking the April 8 solar eclipse with the Hoosier Cosmic Celebration, a performance-packed event at IU's Memorial Stadium where some of the expected 300,000 visitors to Bloomington will watch the highly anticipated celestial alignment.

Shatner will be joined on the afternoon of April 8 by performers from IU's musical theatre and dance programs, as well as an appearance by retired NASA astronaut Mae Jemison and a concert by Janelle Monáe. As star-studded as the Cosmic Celebration is, Shatner is playing a critical role in the big day. The 93-year-old " Star Trek " actor and philanthropist will be performing a spoken word piece as part of the celebration's program, with his last words ending just as totality is beginning.

Related: Why I’m staying home for the April 8 solar eclipse

He spoke with Space.com and other local Indiana media ahead of his upcoming Indiana trip, and he noted the possibility of rain or clouds getting in the way of experiencing something wonderful.

a silver-haired man smiling, wearing a black button-up shirt and black coat.

What if the weather clouds out your solar eclipse?

William Shatner: It's the Sword of Damocles . It's the animal outside the door. And nobody talks about it because it's perfectly probable that there will be an enormous thunderstorm the instant the sun is eclipsed. It's also perfectly possible that it will be a clear, bright, lovely, warm spring day, and we will all enjoy the benefits of the Hoosier weather. What happens if it's cloudy? I don't know. It's like looking into the pit of a volcano saying, "What do we do about that thing?" And it's nothing can be done. There's nothing can be done."

Shatner spoke at length about the wonders of getting to see something as special as a total solar eclipse. It is, after all, a complete coincidence that the sun and moon appear relatively the same size in the sky.

That's not the case on many other worlds. For instance, scientists have witnessed Mars' tiny moon Phobos transiting the sun , as seen by the Curiosity rover from the surface of the planet, but the relative size of the moon and sun in the Martian sky don't create the same totality phenomenon seen during solar eclipses on Earth.

What does this solar eclipse mean to you?

Shatner: One of the curses, and one of the benefits of humanity is our curiosity. And we'll never overcome that curiosity. "What's there? Why is it hiding?" I mean, even this eclipse, "How did it happen? Oh, you mean a great big piece of debris...brushed up against Earth, causing it to scoop out an amount of Earth to make the moon?" How do we know that, and how do we do that? How did we see it? I mean, the mystery of the beauty of our existence — to examine that is a voyage we all have to take...

To me, the magic of the eclipse, the extraordinary events it all took in the heavenly bodies to cause this eclipse, should make us ponder the mystery of existence, of our own existence, of the existence of everything else and how unified everything is...

The eclipse should bring about all of us thinking about the mystery of existence. And the beauty of the fact that we live and are able to observe it from this little rocky outpost called Earth, and how valuable that is to keep alive, to keep healthy, because that's why we are alive. So this event, the eclipse, should bring about a whole manifestation of the mystery of everything...

It's going to be so much fun-filled, with some of the answers to the mysteries and some of the mysteries posed as questions. You'll have a great time.
