Surajkund (literal meaning is 'Lake of the Sun') is an artificial Kund (‘Kund’ means lake or reservoir) built in the backdrop of the Aravalli hills with an amphitheatre-shaped embankment constructed in semicircular form. It is said to have been built by the Tomar king Suraj Pal of Tomar dynasty in the 10th century. Tomar was a sun worshipper and he had therefore built a Sun temple on its western bank.

Surajkund is an ideal picnic spot, as it is situated only 8 kms. away from South Delhi. Substantiating this belief, there are ruins of a Sun Temple around the sunpool. The complex includes a beautifully done-up garden and a pool - Siddha Kund.

More importantly, Surajkund has earned fame for hosting the world acclaimed Surajkund International Crafts Mela organised here every year. Celebrated during 1st to 15th February, this is a fair that showcases the Indian handicrafts, handlooms and folk traditions. Set amidst a rich rural backdrop, the fair offers a lot of fun, frolic, entertainment and exclusive shopping opportunities. The fair comes alive with truly exotic, exquisite and exclusive ethnic items that range from delicately embroidered fabrics, hand woven furnishings, terracotta artefacts, jewellery, metal and cane-ware. Not to miss, a variety of mouth-watering Indian cuisines at the Food Court.

Moreover, the Chaupal and Natyashala pulsate with, folk dances and musical evenings that add riot of colours and euphoria of rhythm to the entire experience.

Every year national and state awardee crafts persons from all the corners of India participate in the Fair. The year 2013 witnessed the 27th Surajkund International Crafts Mela.

The Mela is an annual event that highlights some of the finest handloom and handicraft traditions of the country.

The first fortnight of February sees the rural India bask in the warmth of admiration at Surajkund Mela village that lies about 8 kms. from South Delhi. The Mela also celebrates the heritage, culture and art forms. A different theme State is chosen every year that puts its best foot forward.

History of Surajkund

Surajkund has a fascinating history that dates back to the 10th century. The reservoir was built by King Suraj Pal of the Tomar dynasty, who ruled over Delhi and parts of northern India. The king was a devout follower of the Sun God and he built a sun temple near the lake. According to legend, the king was cured of his leprosy by bathing in the lake and worshipping the sun. The lake is shaped like a semi-circle and has steps on its western side. The embankments of the lake are decorated with stone carvings of animals, birds and flowers. The lake also has an amphitheatre where cultural events are held.

Surajkund witnessed many historical events and changes over the centuries. It was invaded by the Mughals, who added their own architectural features to the lake and the temple. It was also visited by the British, who used it as a picnic spot and a hunting ground. Today, Surajkund is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India and a popular tourist destination.

Surajkund Mela: A Celebration of Crafts and Culture

One of the main attractions of Surajkund is the annual Surajkund International Crafts Mela, which is held every year from February 1 to February 15. The theme state or country gets a special pavilion where its crafts and culture are exhibited. The mela also has a food court where visitors can enjoy various cuisines from different parts of India and the world.

The mela is a great opportunity for visitors to shop for unique and authentic products at reasonable prices. It is also a platform for artisans and craftsmen to showcase their skills and creativity to a large audience. Surajkund Lake, Faridabad, Haryana

  • Location : Faridabad, Haryana
  • Type : Man-made
  • Time/Months to visit : Throughout the year

Surajkund Lake is an old reservoir that lies near Anangpur Dam; this artificial lake is present amidst breathtaking backdrop of Aravallis. The Kund is constructed in the shape of a semicircular embankment and is believed to be built by Suraj Pal, a Tomar ruler. As this ruler was a staunch devotee of the Sun God, a temple dedicated to the Sun has been built near the Kund. It has got its name from Surajkund village which lies near it.

Surajkund Lake

The water of Surajkund Lake gets dried in the summers and gets fed by the Monsoon rainfall. The lake water gets drained in the foothills of the Aravallis. Apart from rain water, the lake gets watered from a small stream in the north-west direction.

History and Archeology

According to beliefs, Tomars were responsible for constructing the Lal Kot area near Surajkund Lake. Suraj Pal constructed the reservoir for his daughter. Renovated by Feroz Shah Tughlaq, this pool of water was provided with several steps of stones. A small Garhi or cave was also built in the vicinity of the Sun Temple. From the excavations at the site, a large number of stone relics have been recovered. These relics consist of microliths and paleolithic; this indicates the presence of pre-historic civilization at this site.

The Kund covers an area of 99 acres; the place overlooks a beautiful imagery. This lake is also known by the name of Peacock Lake which is attributed to its picturesque beauty. One can pursue a number of activities here; strolls under shady trees, community-seeing, watching beautiful avifauna, and enjoying refreshing drinks are some of the leisure activities that can be enjoyed by the tourists. Apart from site-seeing, one can enjoy adventurous sports like kayaking.

Other Attractions

One of the most spectacular attractions of the Surajkund Lake is Surajkund Mela that is organized every year by the tourism department of the state. Badkhal Lake is another enchanting place to be traveled; one can spend a lovely weekend here. Anangpur barrage is known for thousands of blossoming flowers that entirely change the ambience of the place.

Surajkund is an ancient reservoir situated in the Faridabad city of Haryana. It was built in the 10th century and is located at a distance of 8 km from South Delhi. The literal meaning of the word ‘Surajkund’ is ‘Lake of the sun’. The kund or lake in question is an artificial one that has been situated in the backdrop of the Aravalli hills.

When you visit this place, what intrigues you the most is the amphitheatre embankment structured formation which has been constructed in the semicircular form.

It is believed that this place was built by King Surajpal who belonged to the Tomar dynasty sometime in the 10th century. Being a sun worshipper, he successfully executed the completion of a Sun temple on the western side of this place.

Although this place is small, it is quite popular owing to the annual fair which is held here every year. The place hosts the ‘ Surajkund International Craft Mela ’ every year which is visited by millions of people including foreigners. Around 20 countries participate in the fair showcasing their talent for crafts and creativity.

History of Surajkund

It is believed that it was the Yadav kings who had initially come and settled in this place near Lal Kot. It was apparently renamed Quila Rai Pithora in the name of King Prithviraj Chauhan since he was the second last Hindu ruler of India.

And the archaeological excavations done on this land have revealed the presence of a Sun Temple here. Also, certain stones that were carved with writings have been recently recovered during an excavation process. Some historians believe that it was King Surajpal who had built this lake for his daughter. During the Tughlaq Dynasty, under the rule of Feroz Shah Tughlaq, this place was refurbished by creating some steps and terrace. Although the Tomar dynasty had vanished in the 12th century, this place has not seemed to be affected yet.

Major Attractions in and Around Surajkund

Suraj Kund Mela Celebrated at: Surajkund, Distance Faridabad ( Haryana ) Celebrated during: 1st Feb to 16th February – every year Main attractions: Rich showcase of regional and international crafts and traditions

Suraj Kund Mela:

Suraj Kund Mela  — About eight kilometers from New Delhi in the state of Haryana lies the village of Surajkund. As spring glides in, full of warmth and vibrancy leaving the cold and grey winter behind, Surajkund dons itself in colourful traditional crafts of India. Craftsmen from all over the country assemble here during the first fortnight of February for an annual fair known as Surajkund Crafts Mela .

Haryana Folk Dance

Conceived in 1987, the Mela (fair) was a brainchild of Tourism department of the state of Haryana. It provides a platform for the artists to share their art with the common man. While craftsmen from all over India participate, one particular state is focused upon each year. The mela also attracts lakhs of visitors, both for the amazing range of interesting crafts it showcases as well as the relaxing rural ambience of the mela grounds. The fair also provides a meeting ground for the talented painters, weavers, sculptors and craftsmen form all over India who exhibit their creations and the arts and crafts lovers who flock here to admire and purchase these creations.

Surajkund owes its name and perhaps its very existence to an ancient amphitheater sun pool dating back to the 10th century, the remains of which can still be seen here. Historians tell us that this area once fell under the domain of the Tomar clan. Raja Suraj Pal, one of the chieftains of this clan of sun worshipers had a sun pool built in this area. It is believed that a temple also stood on its periphery. It is after this sun pool that this complex has been named Surajkund.

This picturesque site, surrounded by the Aravalli range, is enlivened with the arrival of master craftsmen from different parts of the country in the month of February. As one enters the mela, one is greeted by a ‘living’ Indian village. The uneven, unpaved paths lead to innumerable thatched platforms that provide glimpses of the exquisite and skillful paintings, textiles, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta, stonework, papier-mâché, lac work and cane and grass work. There is an amazing variety and diversity in each craft.

As one moves into this colorful world of Indian handicrafts many beautiful and intricate paintings catch the eye. At one stall you will find Kalamkari, which is done on cloth with a swab dipped in paint and given a fine point. The hairline fineness of lines in each painting tells the story of the deep devotion of the painter to this art form. Mythological tales of religious figures and local deities are themes depicted on these wall hangings.

How to reach:

Surajkund lies in the Faridabad district on the Delhi – Agra national highway. Surajkund is 8 kms from South Delhi. Special transport link the Mela ground to major bus stops in Delhi, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

Mela begins from 09.30 AM and closes at 19.00 PM each evening from 1st to 15th February every year.

Anand Vihar ISBT Metro Station to Surajkund Craft Mela, Surajkund, Faridabad, Haryana

Tourist cluster around the textiles, which are displayed by craftswomen, attired in colorful dresses that they have created themselves. The tie and dye and laharia (striped) designs on silk, georgette and cotton scarves, veils and saris flutter in the gentle breeze attracting the attention of all. In this craft, the design is obtained by tying up garments in a set pattern before dyeing it. Shawls, blouse pieces, dress materials, cushion covers and wall hangings from Gujarat, textile block printing, chikankari, a breathtakingly fine needlework embroidery on crisp cloth, and typical Kashmiri patterns embroidered on wool and silk known as crewel work are put on display here. Bed sheets, cloth pieces, dress materials and saris can be admired and purchased at affordable prices.

Brass and metal crafts also form a prominent part of the mela. Life-size temple idols, human forms, horses, carriages and animals of metal and brass made with perfection and decorated with fine lines will delight your eyes. Besides these, sculptures in marble and soapstone as well as marble and ivory inlay work, woodcarvings are also available.

Some craftsmen have perfected the art of making beautiful creations of Sikki grass. Under their nimble fingers the harsh Sikki grass acquires new and joyful forms like wall hangings, toys, baskets, dolls and plats.

Indian Tribal Dances

If you need a change then you can delight in the folk dances and music of India. Men and women attired in gaily-patterned clothes perform folk dances and sing folk songs from different parts of the country. The atmosphere is filled with melodious music and will leave you spellbound. There are also magic shows, puppet shows and snake charmers to entertain you further.

The potter’s wheel always holds a special enchantment for visitors as the artisans mould entrancing pots and pans with their deft fingers. One can see several varieties of pottery, which include coiled pottery-a specialized art practiced in Manipur, in which a lump of clay is placed over a fixed wooden base and the artisan moves around it.

As you move out you can also see the weaver at his loom weaving durries (rugs), colorful terracotta and clay toys and papier-maché articles from Kashmir along with many other pieces of art, which will leave a long lasting impression in your mind. One feels as though one has left an important chapter of history and tradition behind.

The village ambiance at Suraj Kund Mela not only facilitates city-dwellers to get a taste of village life but it also helps the artisans to gain access to national and international buyers.
