Tampa Travel Guide – Read This Tampa Itinerary Before Visiting

Tampa postcard mural

This detailed Tampa travel guide features the coolest restaurants in the city (including some quirky brunch spots) plus plenty of fun activities and some great places to stay.

I’ve just returned from an amazing sunshine-filled road trip through Florida. It wasn’t the standard Miami / Orlando / Disney route… for this trip I headed to the Gulf Coast for an adventure that spanned so many interests. From amazing wildlife, top food, and beautiful beaches, to adrenaline activities, cityscapes and more, there was plenty to keep me busy!

Here’s a little flavour of what I got up to….

Is Tampa Worth Visiting?

Yes definitely! Tampa is cosmopolitan, but with a retro vibe. It’s a city where new life is being breathed into old buildings, as they’re converted into buzzy food halls. Nostalgic eatery Goody Goody Burgers has made a historic comeback. Ybor City, the former cigar capital of the world, once a booming area of trade, then left for many years, has transformed into a cool part of town with bars, clubs and restaurants.

Tampa, Florida (photo: Macca Sherifi)

So, it turns out there are plenty of things to do in Tampa! With 48 hours in the city, here are my top picks. Plus if you’re looking for my tips on where to stay, scroll down for my selection of the best hotels in Tampa, Florida.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN TAMPA, FLORIDA: 48-HOUR TRAVEL GUIDE

Day 1 in tampa.

British Airways flies direct from London Gatwick to Tampa in around 9 hours, and once you land, you’re moments from the action. So, if you’ve just arrived in Florida, here’s how to kick off your trip!

DAY 1: BREAKFAST IN TAMPA

Start with breakfast at Oxford Exchange . In my food blog about the trip I described this as ‘the most photogenic restaurant I’ve been to in ages’. Stop by for breakfast and enjoy coffee and avo toast in their sunlit conservatory room. Then head to the book store and gift shop to pick up some presents to take home.

Oxford Exchange, Tampa

READ MORE: Best Restaurants In Tampa, Florida

From there, spend the morning on a leisurely walk or cycle ride. Head past the fairytale-esque Tampa University and cross the Hillsborough River to the Tampa Riverwalk . In recent years, this route has been transformed with a boardwalk perfect for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s my top pick if you’re looking for free things to do in Tampa too! Keep an eye out for wildlife – on our walk we spotted manatees, dolphins and one lone alligator!

Tampa University, Florida

If you fancy a dose of culture, you could stop by Tampa Museum Of Art . The building right on the water shows the best in modern and contemporary art.

DAY 1: LUNCH IN TAMPA

Enjoy lunch at Ulele . This is a lively restaurant, serving up a varied menu of food and drinks. If you like beer, Ulele brews its own, so be sure to give that a try. I really enjoyed my fresh tuna salad and the okra fries. Mmmm!

Ulele, Tampa

Still hungry? Head next door to Armature Works for an ice cream with a difference at Astro Ice Cream . Choose one of their ‘Out of This World Creations’ and they’ll mix it up right in front of you using liquid nitrogen, and a splash of magic! The prices are out of this world too, but hey, this is holiday time and it’s a lot of fun!

Armature Works, Tampa

After lunch head to Ybor City – the historic area of Tampa. One of the most interesting facts about Florida  is that this was once the cigar capital of the world. From the old shotgun houses built for workers, to the retro streetcars and neon signs, you’ll feel like you’ve turned back the clock. We enjoyed a tour of the area which gave us a really good grounding in Tampa’s history, but it’s an interesting area to wander around regardless.

Ybor City, Tampa, Florida

DAY 1: DINNER IN TAMPA

Make sure you’re hungry, as tonight’s dinner is at Datz ! If you’re craving American classics, it’s the perfect spot. Tuck into burgers, waffles, hot dogs and more. The Cheesy Todd is the burger that draws the crowds (it’s been featured all over US TV!) replacing burger buns for deep fried mac and cheese patties. We braved it, and can confirm IT WAS DELICIOUS (but very very naughty!!)

The Cheesy Todd burger at Datz, Tampa

Day 2 In Tampa

After breakfast, hire a waterbike from Tampa Bay Waterbike Co and cruise the Hillsborough River at..err… 5mph! It’s a great way to explore the city, see some wildlife (we spotted dolphins and stingrays!) and get a bit of exercise too. If you’re cycling later in the day, pick up a cocktail from The Sail first and take it on board. I can’t imagine it’ll help your cycling ability, but it’ll make the experience even more fun! For me, this was one of the most fun things to do in Tampa!

Tampa Bay Waterbikes

DAY 2: LUNCH IN TAMPA

You’ll deserve a tasty lunch after your athletic morning on the river, so I’d recommend heading to Goody Goody Burgers in Hyde Park Village. You can read more about this historic restaurant in my food blog about Tampa . Order the POX burger, with the oh so secret sauce – I’ve been told its worth every calorie!

Goody Goody Burger, Tampa

After lunch, explore postcard-worthy Hyde Park Village. If you’re on a budget then this is fab, as it’s another great free thing to do in Tampa. I’d describe the area as Wisteria Lane crossed with the cute bungalows of New Orleans, so expect manicured lawns, pastel coloured houses and big American flags waving in the wind. It really was beautiful!

Exploring Hyde Park Village, Tampa

DAY 2: DINNER IN TAMPA

Catch a Pirate Water Taxi to Water Works Park (Stop 16). The hop on hop off boats are a handy way to navigate the city, and this stop is perfectly located for The Hall On Franklin – tonight’s dinner stop!

This smart food hall offers a whole heap of vendors, but with table service, meaning no queueing and more time for chats, drinks and catch ups with friends! Definitely try the poke bowls, and my top tip for drinks – try the Kentucky Franklin! It was so tasty I’ve been attempting to recreate it back at home.

Where To Stay In Tampa

My pick of the best hotels in Tampa. NB – worth noting that Tampa is a city without any 5-star hotels, but that is changing very soon! Watch this space for some exciting new additions to the city’s accommodation offerings.

Hilton Tampa Downtown – Great location, smart hotel with a pool, this hotel was perfect for our stay in Tampa. I loved that it was within walking distance of the Tampa Riverwalk!  Check latest prices here .

Hilton Tampa Downtown

Le Méridien Tampa – Stay in a piece of history in Tampa! This hotel near Ybor City was once a federal courthouse. Decor is smart and there’s a pool to cool off in after a day of exploring.  Check latest prices here .

I am going to Tampa the weekend before Christmas. 48 hours is what I’ll have and I got a lot of ideas of what to do there and how to make most of the limited time I’ll spend there. Great work!

I live in Tampa and have to say you really enjoyed your time here! Ulele and Oxford Exchange are both great choices. For Hotels I like Grand Hyatt near the airport. Ybor and the Riverwalk are musts if you are visiting.

Thanks Tom – great choices too!

How to Get Around

Miami is always going to be Miami. But when it comes to the places everyone is talking about in Florida, it’s impossible to ignore Tampa. The Tampa Bay area has grown rapidly in recent years, with new residents attracted to the region's endless opportunities to get outside and a booming food scene constantly that's leveling up.

“Tampa has always been an appealing destination,” says Emmy Award nominee Java Ingram , who co-hosts the popular local morning show, Great Day Live. “It’s a city cloaked in sunshine, sandwiched by water, with a rich history, cultural diversity, and a stone’s throw away from award-winning beaches.”

With warm weather and hundreds of sunny days per year, the Gulf Coast city beckons for a winter warm-up as much as a summertime beach escape (spots like Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach are around 40 minutes away) where you can look forward to big-city museums, fine dining, and festivals galore.

The city’s marquee festival happens every January, when the Gasparilla Pirate Fest — said to be one of the largest parades in the country — involves celebrations both on the water of Hillsborough Bay and along Bayshore Boulevard, a waterfront promenade that gets taken over by floats and bead throwing.

The multi-day Gasparilla Music Festival draws big-name bands to a downtown riverfront park in February, and there are tons of food festivals throughout the year, too, including the Cuban Sandwich Festival in historic Ybor City every May.

The city is best explored by neighborhood-hopping, says Shawna Wiggs, managing editor of several of the city’s premier lifestyle magazines, including Tampa Magazine .

For the trendiest part of town, she points visitors to Water Street Tampa , a growing wellness district in the heart of downtown that’s been completely reimagined in recent years. “Here you'll find places to eat, stay, and play in an atmosphere that gives off a big-city vibe,” Wiggs says.

Hit South Tampa and neighborhoods like Hyde Park for a totally different feel. “This is the residential neighborhood you'll never want to leave. Strategically located in close proximity to downtown, you'll find the tree-lined streets of historic neighborhoods, the hottest restaurants in town, and numerous parks and recreation areas like Bayshore Boulevard, known for its scenic waterfront walking and biking paths,” says Wiggs.

Below, find everything you need to know before visiting Tampa.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Grab an amazing steak and seafood dinner with some of the best people-watching in town from the streetside patio at Meat Market in Hyde Park.
  • Stroll, bike, or jog while scouting for dolphins and rays along Bayshore Boulevard or the Tampa Riverwalk.
  • Go restaurant and bar-hopping in the new Water Street Tampa district, starting with The Tampa Edition’s great venues like its rooftop pool bar and lobby bar.
  • Play pirate and catch beads during January’s annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest.
  • Neighborhood-hop in Hyde Park Village, Water Street Tampa, and Ybor City.

Best Hotels and Resorts

The tampa edition.

Ian Schrager’s Tampa Edition sits at the heart of Water Street Tampa and has the city’s most beautiful rooftop pool (draped with bougainvillea) as well as the Michelin-starred Mediterranean restaurant, Lilac , helmed by Chef John Fraser, tucked just off its lobby.

Palihouse Hyde Park Village

New in 2023, this hotel opened along the historic and tree-lined streets of Hyde Park Village, one of Tampa’s toniest and most pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. The 36 rooms at Palihouse Hyde Park Village have SMEG mini-fridges and a lovely mid-century aesthetic. Public spaces, including a jewel box of a bar, are decorated with vintage Hermes scarves and other treasures.

James Jackman

JW Marriott Water Street Tampa

Come for Tampa’s best spa and highest rooftop bar, Beacon , which crowns the 27th floor of the JW Marriott Water Street Tampa with 360-degree views of downtown, Hillsborough River, and Hillsborough Bay.

Le Méridien Tampa

Housed in a former downtown courthouse, the 130-room  Le Méridien Tampa feels like a modern urban hideaway and sits just a few blocks from the Tampa Riverwalk and its lovely museums, parks, and riverfront path.

Hotel Haya

Roosters roam the streets around stylish Hotel Haya in the historic Ybor City neighborhood. Come for the courtyard pool and the great Cuban sandwiches and cortados at Havana-inspired cafe, Cafe Quiquiriqui .

TriggerPhoto/Getty Images

Tampa Riverwalk

Stretching over 2.5 miles to the city's most gorgeous food hall at  Armature Works (a former street car warehouse), the Tampa Riverwalk makes for a delightful destination to stroll, jog, rollerblade, or bike. Along the way, stop at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park to check out a pop-up event or let the kids run on the playground, pop into the Tampa Museum of Art for the latest exhibition, or rent a paddleboard from Urban Kai to tool around the Hillsborough River. Hop just across the river for great restaurants like Oxford Exchange .

Bayshore Boulevard

Tampa’s great year-round weather is one of its major draws, and the city gets its exercise in the fresh air along 4.5-mile-long Bayshore Boulevard . The waterfront park is lined by some of Tampa’s most exquisite homes, and it's said to be one of the longest continuous sidewalks in the country. Follow it all the way south to oak-filled Ballast Point Park , where you can stroll the pier or grab an ice cream.

Tampa Electric's Manatee Viewing Center

From November to mid-April every year, you have a good chance of seeing many, many manatees where they converge at the warm water outflow at Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center , about a 20-minute drive from downtown Tampa. Particularly during cold spells (when temperatures dip into the 70s and below in this part of Florida), you’re likely to see scores of the gentle marine mammals below you while strolling the boardwalks.

The Florida Aquarium

In downtown Tampa’s Channel District, The Florida Aquarium has interesting exhibits showcasing Florida’s most iconic natural environments and denizens, including alligators, river otters, and wetlands birds like roseate spoonbills. There's also a touch tank with cownose rays that kids love.

Wat Mongkolratanaram

A riverfront Thai temple might be the last thing you’d ever expect to find in Tampa. But visiting this beautiful place of worship and its gorgeous orchid-filled grounds just east of downtown for the weekly Sunday market is a cherished weekend ritual. Grab a picnic table under the towering oak trees, let the kids run around, and enjoy the serene vibes, spectacular setting, and delicious eats.

Best Restaurants

Hidden away near Armature Works, come to Kōsen for an exquisite omakase experience helmed by Chef Wei Chen, who honed his talents at New York City’s three-Michelin-star restaurant, Masa. It’s a pure pleasure to sit at the 12-seat counter and try things like Hokkaido uni and toro from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market while watching Chen’s impressive knife skills. Be sure to book far in advance as this spot fills up in a hurry.

Michelin-starred Italian hot spot Rocca never disappoints, particularly when you kick off your meal with the house-made mozzarella that’s hand-pulled table side. “I will never turn down dinner at Rocca, but after earning its first Michelin star, a reservation is hard to get,” says Wiggs. “If you aren't planning in advance, I recommend going when the restaurant first opens and snagging a seat at the bar.” Wiggs loves to order the dirty martini with grilled olives and whatever crudo is on offer. “You can't go wrong with any of their pastas,” she adds. “The spaghetti al limone and rigatoni all'amatriciana are outstanding.”

Courtesy of Meat Market

Meat Market

Right in the heart of Hyde Park Village, Meat Market’s indoor and outdoor tables are packed every night of the week. “For a more glamorous take on the traditional steakhouse, there's no better stop than Meat Market,” says Wiggs. The sea bass with truffle mash and wild mushrooms is always a winner, and if you’re into all things wagyu, you won’t be disappointed here — the ribeye is as buttery as meat gets.

For one of Tampa’s best brunches, head to this West Tampa Greek spot. ”The food, ambiance, and staff are incredible at Psomi ,” says Ingram. “On any given Saturday, you will find me ordering the lamb burger – it’s packed with flavor and good to the last bite. If I still have room left after the burger, I’m ordering the saganaki or the spanakopita.”

Sunda New Asian

Tampa’s up-and-coming Midtown neighborhood has some great new restaurants, too, including Sunda New Asian . “The owner, Billy Dec, has family from both the Philippines and Tampa, which is why he opened a location here,” explains Ingram. “The restaurant is gorgeous from a design perspective and the menu has dishes that represent several Asian cuisines. I love the bulgogi roti tacos, the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi, and the lobster wagyu sushi.”

Tampa is a year-round destination. Visit during the winter months, from December through March, for the best chance at seeing manatees in larger numbers when they converge in warm waters at nearby springs and the electric plant. The annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest takes place in late January and is a big draw for what’s essentially a massive alfresco party, but note hotel prices surge over this weekend and the crowds tend to be on the rowdier side (think Mardi Gras in miniature).

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Travelers can fly into Tampa International Airport or St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport . Flying into Orlando International Airport , about 90 minutes away by car, is also an option, with more international and domestic connections.

Neighborhoods to Visit

Peter Titmuss/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Tampa earned its nickname, Cigar City, in this historic district settled by Cubans and other immigrant groups — many of whom worked in the cigar factories — in the 19th century. “From roaming roosters to cigar factories, Ybor City is a must when visiting Tampa,” Ingram says.  “Entertainment, food, and history are all up for grabs in this historic neighborhood.  I love attending events at The Cuban Club.” She recommends a stroll along 7th Avenue to enjoy Spanish and Cuban fare at Florida’s oldest restaurant, Columbia , open since 1905 in the neighborhood. “I also recommend a tour of J.C. Newman Cigar Company, one of the last operational cigar factories in the United States,” Ingram says.

Water Street Tampa

These days, all things downtown revolve around Water Street Tampa, a 55-acre project developed by Strategic Property Partners bustling with great restaurants like gastropub The Pearl , brunch and date night hot spot Boulon Brasserie , and Lona by Chef Richard Sandoval (the latter skews deliciously Oaxacan and has downtown’s best happy hour margaritas). Stroll to the waterfront and spots like Sparkman Wharf , with a lively beer garden and pop-up restaurants from some of Tampa’s best chefs inside shipping containers.  Don’t miss sampling the guava pastelito ice cream at Chill Bros ., an ice creamery where everything is made in-house.

Hyde Park Village

This upscale neighborhood full of Florida craftsman houses is located just south of downtown, steps from Bayshore Boulevard. “Hyde Park has stunning architecture and great shopping, restaurants, and views,” says Ingram. “It’s home to some of my favorite spots including On Swann and Timpano restaurants." Ingram says to stop by Sunni Spencer  boutique for "Après-Sea" pool and beachwear, and then catch a film at Cinebistro , a movie theater where you can dine on bistro eats while watching the latest releases. Ro Hyde Park is hard to top for an elevated Japanese and sushi restaurant in the neighborhood.  And ask someone how to find the hidden-away new speakeasy, Jekyll.

Seminole Heights

The historic neighborhood of Seminole Heights, located just north of downtown, is home to a young, creative scene, as well as some of the city’s best bars and restaurants, including spots like Rooster and The Till , helmed by lauded Tampa chef, Ferrell Alvarez, hip shuffleboard bar Shuffle , and breweries like Common Dialect Beerworks .

Tampa’s neighboring city across the bay is always worthy of a visit, too. It's home to the great new St. Pete Pier — with a tiki bar, pirate-themed playground, and onsite environmental center — as well as The Dali , which houses the largest collection of works by surrealist painter Salvador Dali outside of his native Spain. The bar at Allelo is beyond beautiful — backed by a mural of Florida birds, some extinct and others still among us — and the charcuterie and mezze platters are an absolute delight.

You’re best off picking up a rental car to explore Tampa at your leisure. You can also get by using the Coast Bike Share program, Pirate Water Taxi , and Teco StreetCar to explore the areas around Water Street Tampa, the Tampa Riverwalk, and Ybor City. The Cross Bay Ferry connects downtown Tampa with downtown St. Pete.

Top 17 Things to Do in Tampa Bay, Florida

tampa florida tourism guide

Sean Pavone / Getty Images

Regionally, Tampa Bay encompasses four cities—Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater , and Brandon. All border the largest open-water estuary on Florida’s west coast (covering nearly 400 square miles). The outdoor recreational opportunities alone provide reason enough to visit the region, but if aquatic activities aren’t your thing, the Tampa Bay area is packed with loads of other exciting experiences to be had. So, no matter if you’re the adrenaline junkie, shopaholic, art aficionado, or bar hopper, this area has got something for everyone.

Watch Now: Essential Things to See and Do in Tampa

See manatees in their natural habitat.

Even though there are high-quality zoo and aquarium options in Tampa, they can get pricey if you're visiting with the whole family. Thankfully, the Manatee Viewing Center is a unique place to see these majestic sea cows without paying a dime. Seawater used by the Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach is pumped back out into the Bay after being warmed (it's clean water, so there's no water pollution happening). In the winter when temperatures drop, the local manatees gather around the power plant to swim around in the warmer water.

Today, this area is a protected sanctuary and run by the Manatee Viewing Center. It's free to visit but is only open when the manatees are around, usually from November to April. In addition to the sea animals, this habitat is home to other wildlife as well. There are butterfly gardens, a stingray touch tank, and a trekking route through the estuary for more animal sightings.

Grab a Bite With Friends at Armature Works

 Matthew Paulson / Flikr / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

For a little taste of Brooklyn in Central Florida, visit Armature Works, a once-dilapidated warehouse that's been repurposed into a trendy food market and cultural center. Located in the historic Tampa Heights neighborhood on the shore of the Hillsborough River, this fun gathering place is one of the hippest spots in the city. The highlight is the Heights Public Market, a food hub of different restaurant stalls serving everything from vegetarian comfort food to artisan ice cream sandwiches. Indoor dining is available, but the market is best enjoyed on a sunny day when you can eat and drink outside overlooking the river.

If you happen to be in town on the second Wednesday of the month, head over in the evening for the monthly Heights Night Market. In addition to even more food trucks, you can also peruse and purchase locally made handicrafts.

Spend the Afternoon With Dolphins

Get out of Tampa Bay and head out into the Gulf of Mexico on a dolphin sightseeing tour for a chance to see these playful creatures in their natural habitat. Unlike an aquarium or a tank experience to touch dolphins, these porpoises are all free, so the tours are considered ecologically responsible. Boats travel out into Boca Ciega Bay and the Gulf where pods of dolphins are usually plentiful, so spotting them is usually guaranteed (just in case, be sure to seek out a company that returns your money if no animals are seen). You're also likely to see at least some other wildlife on your excursion, such as seabirds, manatees, and even sea turtles.

Several companies offer dolphin tours in the Tampa area, but some highly-rated options include Dolphin Quest and A Boat Day .

Visit a Theme Park

Busch Gardens

Located about fifteen minutes from the city center, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay  is a must for any thrill seeker visiting the area. The adventure park is not only packed with rush-inducing coasters, but it’s also home to Tampa’s largest zoo. With over 12,000 animals from 300 different species, Busch Gardens will not disappoint. It’s world-class thrill rides, heart-pounding excitement, and family-friendly entertainment all rolled up into one.

For a wet ‘n wild time, check out Tampa's only water park,  Adventure Island at Busch Gardens. Immerse yourself in 30 acres of high-speed thrills and sunny tropical surroundings. Start your day at one of the park’s ten tube slides, then head to the 17,000-square-foot wave pool and enjoy the surf. Oh, and don’t forget to ride the Vanish Point slide. This 70-foot drop slide will leave you craving more.

Explore the City's Zoo or Aquarium

The Florida Aquarium

ZooTampa at Lowry Park  is one of the top family-friendly zoos in the nation. Over 2,000 animals in natural habitats populate six main exhibit areas—Asia, Africa, Wallaroo, Primates, Manatee Circle, and the Florida Wilds which boasts larger habitats for rescued animals native to the state.

If marine life is more your speed, visit The Florida Aquarium . See sharks, alligators, otters, and penguins, or you can even touch a stingray, bamboo shark, or starfish. For an even more hands-on experience, the aquarium offers an underwater walking tour where visitors can actually suit up in scuba gear and walk with the fish and sharks.

Discover Something New at MOSI

Wendell Metzen / Getty Images

You can easily fill up an afternoon exploring Tampa's Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI). It's the largest science center in the southeastern United States, featuring 400,000 square feet of interactive activities and exhibits. MOSI also includes a planetarium, ropes course, and virtual reality simulator.

Wander Among Dinosaurs

Dinosaur World

They're back and they're life-size! Walk among more than 200 dinosaurs at Dinosaur World, located in Plant City, about a 20-minute drive from central Tampa. Search for authentic fossils and unearth a life-size dinosaur skeleton in the park’s boneyard. Even though it may sound a bit gimmicky, Dinosaur World is consistently selected as one of the top destinations in Florida and it's a certified autism-friendly attraction. Interactive activities are fun for both young children and older kids with an interest in paleontology (or "Jurassic Park"). Let yourself be surprised at this endearing Tampa-area park.

Head to the Beach

Visit St. Pete

The St. Petersburg-Clearwater barrier islands boast approximately 35 miles of white sand beaches and pristine Gulf of Mexico waters. The area's beaches are some of the finest in the nation—winning awards for everything from sand quality to environmental management. Caladesi Island,  Fort DeSoto Park , and Clearwater Beach are especially beautiful and worth a visit. This area is one of the few untouched beaches in all of Florida—you’ll absolutely feel like you’re on a deserted island.

Enjoy the Shopping

Dennis Macdonald / Getty Images

Tampa Bay is home to a wide variety of shopping venues. For an upscale shopping experience try  International Plaza and Bay Street  located near the Tampa International Airport, or Hyde Park Village  near Tampa’s downtown. Both venues feature upscale shopping and dining experiences unavailable elsewhere in the area. Westfield Countryside Mall , in Clearwater, is unique because it features an ice skating rink in the center of the mall in addition to its large retail selection.

About 35 minutes outside of Tampa Bay you will find the small fishing town of Madeira Beach where John's Pass Village and Boardwalk  is the main attraction. The outdoor venue features over 100 merchants—from unique craft shops to eclectic antique dealers—so you are bound to bring home a one-of-a-kind souvenir from here. Fresh seafood restaurants and water sports activity rentals are available, too.

Eat at Florida's Oldest Restaurant

Richard Cummins / Getty Images

Tampa's historic Columbia Restaurant is the oldest restaurant in the state of Florida and the largest Spanish restaurant in the world. Opened in 1905, the landmark restaurant takes up an entire city block in the historic Ybor City district of Tampa. Its award-winning Spanish/Cuban cuisine features all the classics and a phenomenal wine list with more than 850 wines and an inventory of 50,000 bottles. The 1,700-seat restaurant features 17 dining rooms. Entertainment includes Spanish Flamenco dance performances nightly, Tuesday through Saturday.

Celebrate at One of the Area's Festivals

While locals will use any excuse to celebrate, visitors can get in on the action too during one of Tampa’s many unique festivals. The week-long Gasparilla Pirate Fest takes place in late January and celebrates the legendary pirate Jose Gasper who terrorized the waters of Western Florida in the late 18th century. The celebration culminates in one final day-long invasion parade and street fair that some say rival Mardi Gras.

The Florida State Fair takes place every February in Tampa. The fair features over 100 rides and games in addition to lots and lots of classic fair foods—cotton candy, ice cream, and fried everything. If March is the only time you can visit, there’s a fair then, too. Florida’s Strawberry Festival is an 11-day event celebrating the strawberry harvest of Eastern Hillsborough County in Plant City. It’s a great time for the whole family, featuring live music, games, rides, and a whole lot of strawberries.

Visit Historic Ybor City

Peter Ptschelinzew / Getty Images

The Tampa Bay area is rich in history dating back more than 450 years and Ybor City is at its center. Once known as the "Cigar Capital of the World," the area once boasted 200 factories with 12,000 cigar-makers. Today, you can explore Tampa Bay's history in a number of museums throughout the area, step back in time on the streets of Ybor City and even take a reminiscent ride aboard an electric streetcar down Tampa's streets.

Tour Tampa's Riverwalk

csfotoimages / Getty Images

Experience Tampa’s downtown with a trip across the city’s gorgeous Riverwalk. The 2.4-mile path is your walkable, bikable or Segway-able connection to all the excitement of downtown Tampa. Start at the south end of the Riverwalk, making sure to take in the Riverwall Exhibit, a 550-photograph collage by artist Bruce Marsh. As you head down the Riverwalk you’ll hit other great stops, like the Florida Aquarium, Port Tampa Bay, and the Tampa Bay History Center.

The Riverwalk is the best and easiest way to experience the city and all of its main attractions. By the time you get to the north side, you can take a break at one of the top-rated restaurants in the area, Ulele, named for the legendary Florida Indian princess and home to the most unique cuisine around. The food is inspired by Native American culture.

Experience Tampa’s Craft Beer Renaissance

Angry Chair Brewing

Back in 1896, the Florida Brewing Company opened its doors in downtown Ybor City, making Tampa a mecca for craft beers at the time. Prohibition and other regulations made craft beer a difficult industry to keep in the area so the brewery shut its doors and the craft beer scene in Tampa effectively died. That is, until a century later when the Tampa Bay Brewing Company  was born and ushered in a craft beer renaissance. Today, you can visit one of the many craft and micro-breweries around the area and sip on anything from Angry Chair Brewing’s German Chocolate Cupcake Stout to Coppertail Brewing Company’s Free Dive IPA.

Immerse Yourself in Tampa’s Museum of Art

Since 1979, the Tampa Museum of Art has been the epicenter for the city’s creatives. The museum has a wide variety of modern, classical, and contemporary pieces in its permanent collection in addition to a consistent line-up of visiting exhibits by world-renowned artists. Works by Picasso, Renoir, Cassatt, Degas, and Lichtenstein are all on display in addition to hundreds of others, but even more incredible is the building. Designed by award-winning architect Stanley Saitowitz, the 66,000-square-foot building is a marvel by itself. At night it is illuminated by a 14,000 LED light installation called "Sky (Tampa)" by artist Leo Villareal. The lights transition from electric blue, hot pink, violet, and red every evening.

Explore the Hillsborough River

dsharpie / Getty Images

Running in and around Tampa, the Hillsborough River is a great way to experience the area’s outdoor activities and eco-tourism. Canoe Escape offers full-day or half-day tours down the river where you’ll come face-to-face with some of Florida’s most beautiful creatures, such as the white ibis, turtles and perhaps even a gator or two.

Another fun way to experience the river closer to the city is via Pirate Water Taxi . The taxi boats ride up and down the Hillsborough River making 17 stops throughout downtown Tampa and along the Riverwalk. It’s a fun mode of transportation to get around downtown and it’s a great value.

Run Wild at the Glazer Children’s Museum

If you're traveling with young ones, then this kid-friendly museum should be an obligatory stop during your Tampa vacation. The Glazer Children’s Museum is home to over 20 hands-on exhibits for children of all ages. Kids learn about everything from banking and commerce at the museum’s Central Bank exhibit to engineering at the Engineers’ Workshop. For those developing a flair for the arts, the Art Smart area is the perfect place to hone their craft. This family-friendly museum is located about halfway down the Riverwalk in the heart of Tampa.

Why Go To Tampa

Everyone knows that Tampa is the place for families. And for animal lovers. And for conventioneers. But possibly – even if you don't fit into any of those demographics – Tampa is for you, too? This balmy city by the bay still has plenty of charms away from the amusement park, the aquarium and the convention center (although  Busch Gardens  and the  Florida Aquarium  are still great ways to spend a day). There's lots of history here. For example, Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders stopped here on their way to Cuba during the Spanish-American War. And you'll also find a few choice museums, including the Museum of Science & Industry. And then there are the sports – this is the home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning. It's the namesake city of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, and the spring training home base for several other major league teams. And when you've exhausted all that Tampa has to offer, you can drive just 25 miles south to  St. Petersburg  for some sophisticated dining or to Clearwater for its gorgeous sugar sand beach.

Lindsay Harvey

  • Last Updated: February 3, 2024

If you’re looking for the perfect way to spend 3 days in Tampa, then you’ll absolutely love this post! Here’s my ultimate Tampa itinerary for any traveler.

Tampa is often overlooked in comparison to the more popular Florida cities of Miami , Key West and Orlando . But as it is in close proximity to each, visiting Tampa should be on your list when traveling to Florida.

The perfect 3 days in Tampa itinerary will include a mixture of both city culture and outdoor adventure.

You can sit by the Hillsborough River and enjoy a drink and people watching. Or rent a standup paddleboard or waterbike and see the city from the river itself.

Have a beach day along the Gulf of Mexico or throw your hands in the air and ride rollercoasters or water rides.

Of course, there is also plenty of history and culture to be found in Tampa Bay.

Ybor City, also known as “ Cigar City ” as it was once the heart of the cigar industry in the US, boasts a rich history full of international diversity.

Visit a number of different museums and art galleries. Or simply gawk at the massive yachts and cruise ships that port in Tampa.

There are lots of ways to enjoy Tampa Bay. And if you’re planning a trip here this 3 days in Tampa itinerary is just the start of making the most of your time in the area.

The second part moves a little east into Ybor City. Full of history, culture and amazing eats, this part of Tampa Bay will make you want to come back for more.

While the final part of the city will be the adventure side – either north to adventure parks or west to beaches along the Gulf Coast.

We’ll take you through each part during your stay, giving you the best of what to do in Tampa and loading you with lots of reasons to return.

The biggest tip we can give you though if you like to save money is to purchase the Tampa CityPASS before you come.

This ticket gives you access to a bunch of the best attractions around the city at a discounted rate. You can actually save 54% which is awesome.

SPECIAL DEAL: Save money on all the top attractions in Tampa with the official CityPASS.

Day 1 – Enjoy the Tampa RiverWalk

You can walk, bike, or take the Pirate Water Taxi through the activities on your first day in Tampa. They’re going to be numerous, and you’re going to spend a lot of energy enjoying yourself.

To begin day 1 of your 3 days in Tampa you’ll want to make your way to the riverwalk.

The Tampa Riverwalk is a 2.6-mile pedestrian and bike trail that runs along the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa Bay.

There are many parks, museums and public spaces to visit and the Tampa riverwalk is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunrise or sunset.

You can even follow the Tampa Riverwalk all the way to the waters of Tampa Bay, which is lined with a famous sidewalk called Bayshore Boulevard .

This 4.5-mile-long pedestrian walkway in South Tampa is perfect for strolling or biking at sunset or sunrise. It’s a favorite among locals and tourists who visit Tampa Bay.

If your hotel doesn’t offer a complimentary breakfast, then I suggest filling up on a delicious breakfast at Goody Goody Burgers located just southwest of the riverwalk in the neighborhood of Hyde Park to start your day.

Oxford Exchange is another popular cafe with a super cool interior and lots of delicious teas.

Then head down to the south end of the riverwalk where you’ll find the first activity of this Tampa Bay itinerary.

Tampa River Walk

The first stop on today’s itinerary is the Tampa Bay History Center. If you enjoy history and learning about the area then this is a great museum to explore.

It is Tampa’s premier cultural venue with fantastic interactive exhibits that engage and make learning fun and top-notch revolving galleries.

You could easily spend a few hours here learning about Florida’s indigenous people, pirates, and European settlers who explored Florida’s coast and Tampa’s history and how it grew and changed to become the city it is today.

  • Cost : $14.95
  • Hours : 10 am – 5 pm
  • Address : 801 Water St.

Then try your hand at riding a waterbike. It’s easy and much like riding a normal bicycle except you’re floating on the water by two pontoons.

You can rent a waterbike for as little as $30 and enjoy a unique way to explore and see downtown Tampa’s waterfront and waterways.

This is a fun way to get outside in the sunshine when you visit Tampa!

Next, enjoy the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park as you make your way toward the art museums like Tampa Museum of Art and the nearby Florida Museum of Photographic Arts .

Sprawl out on the large green space and take in the riverfront views or leisurely stroll around the park. If you are here on a weekend you may end up seeing an arts and crafts show or music or food festival.

Once you’ve relaxed in the park, walk over to the skyscrapers of Tampa city and check out the Tampa Museum of Art. Be inspired by incredible works of ancient, modern and contemporary art from around the world.

The museum has been active for 100 years and houses one of the largest collections of Greek and Roman antiquities in the Southeastern United States. It also offers creative classes year-round.

Who knows, you may learn a new hobby or discover a new talent!

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is another fascinating art museum to check out, especially if you’re into photography.

  • Address : 120 W Gasparilla Plaza

Wrap up the afternoon at Water Works Park and Armature Works. Water Works Park is a great place to visit if you’re visiting with kids.

The park has a large playground and splash pad, perfect for those hot summer days in cool off!

The green space and pavilion host concerts and festivals throughout the year so make sure to check the event calendar to see if an event is happening when you are here.

Once you’ve cooled off at Water Works, walk over to Armature Works for an early dinner.

Armature Works is the hip spot to hang out located in an old refurbished building that’s now a food and community events venue.

Grab dinner at the Heights Public Market or any of the other food and drink venues. Whichever venue you choose to eat at you won’t be disappointed!

There is even an outdoor area where they have movie nights on the lawn and every weekend there’s live music or another social event.

You could also hit up Hyde Park Village , which is full of cozy restaurants and trendy bars. The Hyde Park Village Farmers Market is open on Sunday mornings, so you could always come back here one morning for some tasty local treats.

But don’t lose track of time, just down the road is a stand-up paddleboard company offering sunset and evening paddles on the Hillsborough River.

Next, grab a SUP and head out on the Hillsborough River for a sunset or evening paddle.

Urban Kai has several SUP tours to choose from, or just rent a SUP for an hour or two and explore on your own.

They offer a happy hour sunset paddle for only $25 and it’s a great way to meet others, be social and explore Tampa by water. There’s even a yoga class or manatee paddle as well.

At this point in the day, you can either plan to retreat to your hotel to rest up for the next day in this busy Tampa itinerary or you can head out into the downtown area for a night on the town.

You are right in the middle of everything the city has to offer at night so enjoy your time out.

Day 2 – Explore Ybor City

Day 2 of your 3 days in Tampa itinerary will take you into neighboring Ybor City.

Grab a quick breakfast at your hotel before finding the nearest trolley station.

Tampa’s free historic trolley will take you into Ybor City, and a visit to Tampa is not complete until you explore this little industrial town.

Ybor City is full of history and Cuban culture and as one of only two National Historic Districts found in all of Florida, visiting it is a truly unique experience.

Founded in 1886, it is Florida’s first industrial town and is known for its great cigars, cultural melting pot, and amazing Cuban food. It is actually known as the Cigar Capital of the World!

With so much to see and do here, it’s best to spend an entire day exploring this iconic neighborhood of Tampa Bay. Everything in Ybor City is within walking distance, which is convenient.

That’s right, the chickens and roosters in Ybor City are quite famous.

So you must try your best to get a selfie with one or several of them, they run rampant everywhere!

These wild chickens are so loved that they are protected, and even have their own society and website!

A must-do in a Tampa Bay itinerary is learning about the history of Ybor City. For only $4, learning about the town’s humble beginnings is a bargain.

Located inside what used to be the first Cuban Bread bakery in the U.S., you will see the original ovens used back in the 1920s and a beautiful Mediterranean-style garden.

On the tour, you will also get to step inside a historic casita where the first Cuban immigrants lived.

Visit the website for more info!

  • Hours : 9 am – 4 pm, closed Mon & Tues
  • Address : 1818 E. Ninth Ave

Ybor City is home to the original Cuban Sandwich. And you can’t come to Ybor City and not eat one.

Stop in for lunch at La Segunda for a delicious Cuban Sandwich made on freshly baked Cuban bread.

La Segunda has been baking bread, cookies and pastries since 1915 and is the largest producer of Cuban Bread in Ybor City.

Ybor City Streetcar

Next, go for a stroll down 7th Avenue, once considered one of the 10 great streets in America .

There are many cute boutique shops, markets, art galleries, cafes and cigar shops you can stop in to browse and buy souvenirs.

Buy a hand-rolled cigar to enjoy and watch them be made at any of the cigar shops like Tabanero Cigars .

Jose Marti Park (Little Cuba) is a small park owned by the Republic of Cuba made in honor of Jose Marti who died in the fight for Cuban independence.

When you cross through the archway of the entrance to the park you are pretty much entering Cuban property.

Visit the park Monday-Friday from 8 am-1:30 pm and have your picture taken in front of the Isla de Cuba mural , and you can say you’ve been to Cuba without a passport!

If you haven’t already filled up on Cuban sandwiches and pastries then you must stop for a meal at the historic Columbia Restaurant.

Opened in 1905 as a cafe serving the local cigar workers, it continued to grow and is now the oldest restaurant in Florida and the world’s largest Spanish restaurant.

It serves up tasty Cuban and Spanish-inspired dishes like paella a la Valenciana and roast pork a la Cubana.

Make a reservation early for dinner and a captivated Flamenco show or eat in the cafe and enjoy live music by a local band.

Save room for drinks, as your next stop on this fun-filled Tampa itinerary is to a local brewery.

Take your pick or choose to go to all three of these great breweries in Tampa Bay!

Tampa Bay Brewing Co is the oldest craft brewery in Tampa, which opened in 1995. They offer a wide variety of locally brewed craft beers and a full-on lunch and dinner menu all in a family-friendly atmosphere.

If you aren’t into craft beers and prefer a great cider or mead then Cigar City Cider & Mead is the place to go!

They offer a wide selection of sweet and dry cider and meads made with 100% natural Florida-grown ingredients.

Want cider to go? They also cell their hard cider and apple pie cider in 6 packs!

Want to see how beer is brewed and then sample it? Then check out Coppertail Brewing Co . which produces four core beers and a number of special releases.

Tours are offered Thursday through Sunday for $7 including a beer to drink while touring, samples, and a souvenir pint glass.

The tasting room is family-friendly and they also offer tasty pub fare.

At this point, you could head back to the River Walk or check out a sporting event.

Whether you’re a football, baseball, or hockey fan Tampa Bay has you covered depending on the season you choose to visit.

You can watch the Tampa Bay Lightning play hockey at the Amalie Arena, the Tampa Bay Rays play a stand-up game of baseball at Tropicana Field, or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play an exciting game of football at the Raymond James Stadium.

Day 3 – Choose to Play at the Beach or Busch Gardens!

The final day of your 3 days in Tampa itinerary will give you the option to have a fun Florida water day in one of several ways.

You can choose to check out the number one beach in the country that is Clearwater Beach, cool off at Adventure Island water park or get your thrill on some seriously fast roller coasters at Busch Gardens.

Adventure Island is a large waterpark geared towards thrill-seekers and those wanting to relax as well.

There are over 10 water slides with fast twists and turns and straight down drops for the adventurists.

And you’ll find a large wave pool and a half-mile lazy river for a more relaxing time.

If you happen to be travelling with kids, they will also love Adventure Island and enjoy playing at the Paradise Lagoon or Fabian’s Fun Port and sliding down the kid-friendly water slides.

Make sure you buy your ticket in advance to save some time.

If roller coasters are more your style than relaxing at the beach, don’t pass up on Tampa’s most exciting theme park with some of Florida’s best roller coasters and thrill rides.

With eight scream-inducing roller coasters and a variety of other rides, there’s much fun to be had for everyone at Busch Gardens.

There are also rides that involve a good soak in the event you travel there in a likely hot Florida day!

A one-day advanced ticket is typically a lot more affordable than the popular Orlando theme parks like Disney and Universal.

Plus you can check out the Brew Club where you can sip on any number of 20 draft beers as part of the Anheuser Busch beer legacy.

If you have already bought the Tampa CityPASS , then entry is included to the Busch Gardens.

Busch Gardens Roller Coaster

Recently named the number one beach in the USA, Clearwater Beach is a destination that shouldn’t be skipped when visiting Tampa.

Clearwater Beach is a 4 km stretch of white sandy beach located on a beautiful barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico.

Tourists flock to the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico to enjoy paddle boarding, swimming, parasailing or simply sitting on the beach to enjoy a sunset.

You can also check out Honeymoon Island State Park or Treasure Island for other beach day excursions within a half-hour drive of the city.

St. Pete Beach is another popular day trip from Tampa. Located a 45-minute drive from Tampa Bay, St. Pete Beach is one of the best spots for a beach vacation in Florida.

More popular among college students, St. Pete Beach is known for its fun bars and clubs that line the sandy shores. Downtown St Pete is also super fun for nightlife.

Even farther south is Sarasota Bay , which is just over a 1-hr drive from Tampa. There are lots of fun things to do in Sarasota , like enjoying the beaches, kayaking through the mangroves, and snorkeling in the lagoon.

Wrap up the evening at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino where you can try your luck on the slots or gaming tables or catch an entertaining show.

There is almost always a comedian or musician in town and whether you win or lose at the tables or slots you are sure to have a good time at the casino.

Tampa Travel Guide

Now that you know how to spend 3 days in Tampa, here is a little more information about when to visit the city, how to get around, where to stay and what to eat.

Much like the rest of Florida, Tampa has a hot and wet season and a dry and mild season.

The most popular time to visit, and perhaps the best is in the winter and spring when the weather is cooler and dry and there is no threat of hurricanes.

If you want to save money on hotels, plan on visiting October through December.

In the springtime, tourist season picks up and hotel prices soar.

If you plan to visit in the Summer from May-September, be prepared for hot and muggy weather with rain in the afternoons.

Your best bet will be to do outside activities in the morning and indoor shopping or touring museums in the afternoons when it’s the hottest outside.

For being a rather large city, Tampa is still very walkable and bikeable.

If you just want to do things around town and the riverwalk then you could easily walk, rent a bike or uber to the top attractions in the city.

Tampa also has a free streetcar system that runs from downtown to the channel district and Ybor City.

There is also the Pirate Water Taxi that is similar to a hop-on hop-off tour. You buy a ticket and have the entire day to ride the ferry that can take you anywhere you’d want to go along the waterfront.

The best way to get around Tampa, especially for any day trips you might want to take to the beach, is by car.

If you rent a car, there are usually plenty of parking spaces in the area and most hotels offer private and secure parking if not valet.

If you’re looking to take day trips to St. Pete or Clearwater Beach, a car is essential.

The best way to get around is to rent a car and explore on your own! We recommend Rental Cars , which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market.

Where to Stay in Tampa

Like other Florida cities, Tampa offers a range of accommodations that will vary from boutique Florida-themed hotels to both budget and high-end chains.

For the purpose of these 3 days in Tampa itinerary, we’re going to recommend that you stay as close to downtown Tampa as possible, along the Hillsborough Rivier.

Of course, the hotel selections on the River Walk will be amazing, but higher priced.

But staying anywhere between the Tampa International Airport and Ybor City will put you in the mix of things during your stay in Tampa.

Although located closer to the airport than downtown Tampa, Emerald Homes is a great value as a guesthouse option in Tampa.

Guests will have a room with a private bath, TV, air conditioning, coffee maker, and a private patio. There are shared kitchen facilities if you’re looking to save on cooking.

You can also enjoy free and secure parking if you plan to drive in the area.

Located just to the east of downtown Tampa in the Ybor City part of town, the Holiday Inn Express and Suites is your best mid-range bet for hotels in the Tampa area.

Guests receive amenities you would expect of the brand: quality breakfast, WiFi, flatscreen TV, pool, and fitness center.

Additionally, each room has a kitchenette with a microwave, fridge, and coffee maker so you can be ready to run out the door for a full day in your Tampa itinerary.

Located downtown on the Hillsborough River along the Tampa River Walk, Aloft’s location is among the first reasons to book your stay.

With balcony river views, a pool and fitness center, and an on-site restaurant and bar Aloft is your best choice for luxury accommodation in the heart of Tampa.

Best Restaurants in Tampa

Tampa has as much selection to offer in food choices as any city in America. With international flavors galore you can feast on fresh Florida seafood or enjoy the finer dishes from nearly any country in the world.

Here are a few of our recommendations for your 3 days in Tampa.

When you’re running around the River Walk enjoying your time in downtown Tampa Eddie and Sam’s NY Pizza is your best bet for a quick and affordable bite to eat.

Choose your favorite toppings or grab a slice of a specialty pizza, hero or even wings.

The Columbia Restaurant , in Ybor City, is about as good a Cuban meal as you will find outside of Cuba, or perhaps Miami.

Enjoy the signature 1905 Salad on the lighter side or, of course, you can’t go wrong with their Cuban sandwich with a side of black beans.

Looking to start your meal off with some fresh shrimp and oysters or want to give caviar a taste?

Bern’s Steakhouse brings traditional Florida seafood and high-quality steaks together in a luxurious setting that won’t leave you disappointed.

Tampa, once known for theme parks and zoos, is now evolving to a place where old is new. Historical buildings have been brought back to life and now house trendy restaurants, shops, and attractions. With all this urban renewal, the innovators have followed, and the city has one of the best foodie scenes in Florida.

Tampa has some fun things to do, particularly for families. At Busch Gardens, families get the thrill of an amusement park and zoo all in one place. You'll also find several other popular places to visit in the area dedicated to animals and wildlife, including a zoo, aquarium, and a public manatee viewing area. With all this, plus an excellent science museum and children's museum, Tampa is an ideal place for vacationing families.

Downtown Tampa is an area of high-rise office blocks, but the city also has historic old quarters, such as Ybor City and Old Hyde Park. Franklin Street is the pedestrian center of downtown Tampa, where you will find plenty of shopping, restaurants, and things to do.

You can take a safari to see animals grazing on the plains with reproductions of African villages and camps, and the Serengeti Night Safari is one of the most popular options. Several special animal encounters are available, including the opportunity to hand-feed kangaroos and giraffes; watch as park staff members tend to their patients at the Animal Care Center; and get up close to some of the favorite residents, including sloths and flamingos.

You'll find a wide variety of exciting things to do at the park, including kiddie rides and water rides, but Busch Gardens is best known for its roller coasters that are an extreme thrill experience. You'll have the chance to get hands-on with invertebrates like starfish and anemones and even visit some land-dwelling residents like the lemurs.

For an extra charge, you can also enjoy exciting premium experiences like their Wild Dolphin Cruise and their SeaTREK program, an underwater walking tour where you can explore coral caves and get up close with bonnethead sharks, spotted eagle rays, and other aquatic animals.

Also on-site is a large aquarium and three pools that are used to treat local manatees who are injured or ill. Get up close to some of the zoo's residents, including "backstage" opportunities with penguins and tortoises, as well as the chance to feed an Indian rhino.

Popular residents at the zoo include the African elephants, African penguins, Florida panthers, and the Bornean Orangutan. The park has some rides as well, including a safari ride through the African habitat, a mini-train ride, and a family-friendly roller coaster.

The zoo also hosts special programs and events throughout the year, and is as popular with locals as it is with tourists.

Ybor City

The center of Tampa's Latino community, Ybor City is a National Historic Landmark District. It is named for its founder, cigar baron Vicente Martinez Ybor. He came to the region in the mid 1880s, after workers at his Key West plant threatened to unionize.

At one point, the Ybor cigar factory was the largest in the world with over 4,000 people hand-rolling more than 900,000 cigars a month. However, the Great Depression and machine rollers brought an end to the boom, and most factories were closed and demolished.

In more recent years, the area has experienced a revival and is home to many shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafes. Seventh Avenue in Ybor City, known in Spanish as "La Septima," features some of the district's most historical buildings, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ybor City's Columbia Restaurant is the state's oldest and the nation's largest Spanish restaurant. This historic institution was established in 1905 by Cuban immigrant Casimiro Hernández, Sr. The Columbia is famous for its Spanish cuisine, dinner shows, and old-world architectural charm. Live entertainment includes flamenco and jazz in the café.

Riverwalk at night near Armature Works

If you are staying downtown and are looking for a pleasant place to stretch your legs, head over to the Tampa Riverwalk. This 2.4-mile walkway winds its way along the waterfront, providing fantastic views out over the Hillsborough River. The Riverwalk starts at Sparkman Wharf and ends at the Armature Works — or the reverse, it just depends on where you start or finish.

The Riverwalk has a wonderful collection of public art along its length, ranging from murals to sculptures. Key Tampa attractions are also located on the walk, including the Florida Aquarium and the Tampa Museum of Art among others. For the kids, four playgrounds are available, two of which have splash pads.

If you work up an appetite or thirst along the way, a fine collection of restaurants have sunny patios that serve up tasty dishes and even better people watching. This is especially true at the end (or starting) points at Sparkman Wharf, where you'll find a fine mix of "container" restaurants or the Armature Works, where the dining options are primarily indoors in a beautifully restored industrial building.

IMAX Dome at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa

The Museum of Science and Industry invites visitors to explore, learn, imagine, and immerse themselves in every aspect of science and technology. Starting with the basics of physics, math, and other scientific principles, exhibits expand into various subject areas.

Kids will love playing a giant game of "operation" as they learn about how the human body works and how technology helps people live longer, better lives. The Idea Zone has hands-on projects, and the Connectus exhibit gives visitors the chance to use cutting-edge technology before it is revealed to the general public.

Other exhibits include the opportunity to interact with extreme weather and explore a model of NASA's vision for human life off-earth. The museum has many other things to do as well, like an exciting ropes adventure course, a life-size model of the Mercury spacecraft, and an IMAX theater.

Columbia Restaurant

Dining in Tampa is a different experience than dining in other parts of Florida, and it's worth spending the time to find a few interesting places. The city is a cultural melting pot, and this is reflected in the cuisine. Spanish, Cuban, Italian, and other cultural influences, brought to Tampa through the immigrants that shaped the city's history, have created a dining experience that you won't find in other parts of the state.

Head to Ybor City for a taste of Sicilian at Casa Santo Stephano , set in a recently renovated building with a comfortable atmosphere. Dine on the main floor or head upstairs for an indoor and outdoor experience, where you can enjoy the sunset from the patio.

Less than a block away, don't miss a chance to see the Columbia Restaurant , a cultural institution in Tampa since 1905. This restaurant is one city block but still offers a quaint dining atmosphere with intimate and uniquely designed rooms, which combined can seat up to 1,700 people. The historic building's tiled floors and walls, balconies, chandeliers, historic photos, and daily flamenco shows, create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Despite the name, the food here is a mix of Spanish and Cuban.

Also worth checking out in Ybor City is La Segunda Central Bakery , another longstanding establishment in Tampa, which supplies locals and many of the best restaurants with breads and baked goods.

Ulele in the evening

For fun and casual along with a great outdoor relaxed atmosphere, try the container restaurants at Sparkman Wharf for some takeout . You can find mouthwatering dishes, from hearty mains to gelato and ice cream. This area also has dine-in restaurants, and looks out over the water. Another area for great casual dining options is the Armature Works.

Located on the Tampa Riverwalk near Armature Works, Ulele Restaurant is another great find. Set in the old Tampa Water Works building, the open and airy interior has a fantastic vibe and tasty offerings.

For more ideas and a full range of dining experiences and fun, head to Armenia Avenue and Water Street in Tampa.

Restaurants at Sparkman Wharf

Sparkman Wharf is a wonderful waterfront gathering spot near the Tampa Aquarium. You'll find some of Tampa's most up-and-coming restaurants operating out of containers . Stroll by the containers and find what you want to eat, and then take your meal to the central courtyard and enjoy. One of the most innovative (and tasty) places is the Naked Farmer. Be sure to try one of the bowls of fine, locally sourced, fare.

Depending on the day of the week, you may find a yoga class going on, a movie being shown, or live music being performed on the main stage. This is an outdoor space that locals use like a backyard, bringing their pets and enjoying a picnic while soaking up the atmosphere.

Parking is nearby at the Channelside garage, or walk to Sparkman Wharf along the Riverfront Trail. Next to the entrance to Sparkman Wharf is the dock where the Yacht StarShip dinner cruises depart from.

Armature Works at night

The delightful Armature Works area is a must-see when visiting Tampa. Housed in a wonderfully restored tram car warehouse here, you'll find restaurants and a variety of eclectic shops. This is much more than a run-of-the-mill food court; the dining options here are home-grown, varied, and innovative. In fact, the Armature Works bills itself as a "neighborhood food hub."

Step inside and gaze around this former industrial building, and it's hard to believe that it's been transformed into the hip and happening place it is today. Wander past the various offerings, find something you like, and grab a table inside or, if you prefer, set up outside and soak up the wonderful views of the Hillsborough River.

If you'd prefer a more traditional restaurant, book in advance to secure a table at Ulele, one of Tampa's most popular restaurants. It's just a short stroll across the courtyard. The menu is a mix of locally sourced items with a twist. The art pieces located throughout the restaurant are spectacular and hail from the Gonzmart's private collection.

Gasparilla Pirate Fest, Tampa, Florida, in 2019

Tampa Bay, and Florida in general, has long had an association with pirates. In Tampa, they celebrate this history for two months every year. In February and March, the city comes alive with parades, music festivals, a film festival, a marathon, and a festival of the arts.

Two of the major highlights are the Gasparilla Pirate Festival and the Sant'Yago Knight Parade . During the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, a parade of boats make their way through the waterways of Tampa eventually coming ashore with their "Krewe" looking to take over the city. This parade is typically witnessed by over 300,000 people. The Sant'Yago is a night parade through the streets of Ybor city, where parade floats toss out treats and beads.

J.C. Newman Cigar Co. Museum & Factory

The J.C. Newman Cigar Co. Museum & Factory is one of the most fascinating attractions in Ybor City. Housed in a beautifully restored factory dating from 1910, this free attraction showcases the history of cigar production in the Tampa area.

Of the 150 former cigar factories operating in Tampa, this one, El Reloj , is the only one still operating. In its day, it was the largest cigar factory in the world.

For a more in-depth understanding of the process of cigar manufacturing and to see normally closed areas of the building, sign up for the 75-minute tour (additional fee). This behind-the-scenes trip takes you down into the basement of the factory and even showcases a hidden staircase behind the walls that was only recently discovered. You can see workers making cigars using the same methods as they have for decades.

Kids can learn about saving money and commerce at the bank, and slide down a fire pole on their way to save lives in the fire station.

Future veterinarians can check x-rays and plan treatment for patients, and prospective captains can navigate a shipping vessel through a channel. In addition to many more grown-up jobs they can explore, there are exhibits that explore robotics, engineering, oceanography, and world cultures.

Tampa Electric Manatee Viewing Center at Apollo Beach

Although it may seem like an odd place, this manatee sanctuary is located across from a Tampa Electric power plant. The manatees are drawn here by the warm water produced by the power plant and can sometimes be seen in very large numbers. This is a wonderful family educational thing to do in Tampa, and it's free.

You'll have the best chance of seeing the manatees when the surrounding water temperatures are cold, dipping below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. At the facility, you will find a tidal walkway showcasing a variety of Florida plants and birds, butterfly gardens, as well as an observation platform for the manatees. Picnic tables are available if you want to pack a lunch.

The Manatee Viewing Center is also home to an educational building that features the power plant and a ray touch tank. The center is open from November 1st to April 15th .

Tampa Bay History Center

The exhibits at the Tampa Bay History Center trace the rich history of the Tampa Bay area going back 12,000 years. Early inhabitants of the region such as the Seminoles, the multicultural influences of the last five centuries, the railroad and shipping era, and regional geography are highlights of the Tampa Bay History Center.

One of the newest exhibits is the Treasure Seekers Gallery. Inside this multimedia display area, you'll find a re-created pirate ship and historical items from the 1600s, including cannons, navigation instruments, and pottery. One of the most interesting exhibits is a hologram of a pirate engaged in a sword fight.

If you want to experience one of Tampa's favorite restaurants without having to make the journey to Ybor City, swing by the Colombia café. Grab a seat in this small version of the sprawling restaurant, and enjoy some of the most famous dishes.

In addition to the permanent collection, the center features a temporary gallery with changing exhibits. This is a 60,000-square-foot facility with a glass front, located in the Channelside District.

Henry B. Plant Museum

Part of the former Tampa Bay Hotel , once owned by railroad tycoon Henry Plant, was turned into a museum in 1933. It is a luxurious Victorian palace with distinctive Moorish features. The Henry B. Plant Museum traces the history of the hotel and Plant's contribution to the development of Tampa and Florida.

The various rooms, such as the Grand Hall, the Reading and Writing Room, and the Garden room feature fine period furnishings and offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of Henry B. Plant.

An avid gardener, Plant hired a prominent landscape architect to design the grounds, which are known for their lovely tropical gardens. Upon arrival, you may think that the museum is larger than it actually is. The museum portion of the building is only on one floor to the south side of the main entrance. The rest of the building now houses the University of Tampa.

Evening Cruise on Yacht Starship

One of the best things to do in the evening in Tampa is to take a dinner sunset cruise on the Yacht StarShip. This large triple-decked ship sails out from its berth at Sparkman Wharf into Tampa Bay. Catch the sunset and watch the city lights come on as you enjoy a fine dinner.

Later on, after dinner, wander up to the top deck, where you'll find incredible views out over the water with the cityscape lit up in its full glory. A live DJ spins classics along with new music and requests as the dance floor pulses under the starry skies. Stuck with two left feet and not a dancer? Don't worry, grab a seat along the deck rail and enjoy the view of some of Tampa's finest homes.

If you're in the city with the family or a group of friends and wondering how to entertain everyone, you'll find several fun things to do with a group in Tampa.

A great afternoon or evening in Tampa can be had at Topgolf . Don't worry if you've never swung a club, it's more than just a place to hit a golf ball. Lounge around in comfortable chairs looking out over the driving range, and take turns up at the tee. Tap the machine, and out pops a golf ball. Try to hit it into one of the catch basins out in the field, all while your friends watch you either hit the ball cleanly or dribble it off the tee. If you really have trouble, just give up and settle in with a plate of nachos on the very comfortable couches.

If you are looking for something with a bit more of an adrenaline rush, head next door to iFLY Tampa . Here, you can experience the sensation of skydiving in the safety of a vertical wind tunnel. Step into the wind zone, and your personal instructor will make sure you fly straight and safe all while your friends and family can view the action through plate-glass windows.

Florida can be hot most of the year and what better way to cool off as a family than hitting Tampa's most popular water park, Adventure Island. Here, you'll have your choice of nine major waterslides.

How brave are you? You may find out after reviewing the names of the waterslides: Vortex, Aruba Tuba, Caribbean Corkscrew, Colossal Curl, Vanish Point, Water Moccasin, Calypso Curl, and Riptide.

New in 2022 are the Rapids Racer and the Wahoo Remix. The brand-new Rapids Racer is a side-by-side dual raft run, where you can compete against your friends to see who can get to the bottom first. The Wahoo Remix is an audio assault on your senses. As you pass through the tunnels, you'll be treated to a synchronized light and sound show as you slide to the bottom 600 feet away.

Sunshine Skyway

Sunshine Skyway is a toll bridge located on I 275/US 19. This multi-lane "highway on stilts" is 12 miles long and curves gracefully across the entrance to Tampa Bay. Its most impressive feature is a 4.25-mile-long, high-level bridge, the middle section of which is suspended from two gigantic pylons, allowing the passage of large ocean-going vessels beneath.

The previous bridge was rammed by a cargo ship in 1980 and partly collapsed, and parts of the old bridge now serve as piers for anglers.

As you drive over the new bridge, check out the beautiful views over the ocean. The bridge itself is also an impressive sight and often photographed by tourists. If the wind is up, keep an eye out for kiteboarders racing across the water beneath their colorful kites. The beaches to the east and west of the Skyway by the northern rest stop are hot spots for the local kiteboarding community.

Tampa Theatre

Built in 1926, the Tampa Theatre is a luxurious movie palace featuring a unique mix of architectural styles including Italian Renaissance, Byzantine and Greek Revival. It presents foreign and classic films regularly along with specialty concerts and other programs.

While you can see both new and old films here, watching one of the classics in this building is a great way to feel like you've stepped back to another time period. For a deeper understanding of the building and its history, sign up for a guided tour, offered at 11:30am on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Highlights of the 90-minute tour include a demonstration of the Wurlitzer Movie Organ and the story behind the mounted peacock.

There are several good areas to stay in Tampa, depending on your reason for visiting. Staying downtown is a good option for sightseeing and entertainment. You may want to stay closer to Busch Gardens if this is the primary reason for your visit or near the stadium if you are coming to see a football game. Below are some highly rated hotels in these prime areas.

Luxury Hotels :

  • In a prime downtown location, Le Meridien is a top-end hotel in what was formerly a federal courthouse and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • A relative newcomer to the hotel scene in Tampa is The Current Hotel . This hotel boasts waterfront views from the floor-to-ceiling windows in every room. It's located in a quiet area but easily accessible to all the major highways.
  • A little removed from the action of downtown but in a nice neighborhood is the contemporary Epicurean Hotel . If you are coming to Tampa to see a game, the Renaissance , near the Raymond James Stadium, is a great option.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • In the heart of downtown is the Tampa Marriott Water Street, with waterfront views; nice outside patio areas; and large, comfortable rooms.
  • In the same category is the Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk , also with a nice location and scenic views. Both of these have pools and are conveniently located for visiting Ybor City or the Florida Aquarium.
  • In a fabulous location in the Ybor Historic District is the Hilton Garden Inn , with an outdoor pool and hot tub.

Budget Hotels :

  • A short drive from Ybor City is the Quality Inn and Suites , with a great location for this price range.
  • Near the Raymond James Stadium is the reasonably priced Comfort Suites Tampa Airport North .
  • Also good value and near the stadium is the Clarion Inn and Conference Center Tampa-Brandon. Both of these are a little far from the city center but within reasonable distance if you have a vehicle, and perfectly located if you are here to see a game.

Tampa is renowned for its verdant gardens, cigar manufacturing, modern museums, fine dining establishments, and beautiful sidewalks.
