The main international road crossings into Tanzania are from Kenya. The most used is the border crossing at Namanga, about halfway between Nairobi and Arusha. The other principle border crossing is south of Mombasa on the coast at Lunga Lunga , from where the nearest large Tanzanian town is Tanga . There are quieter border crossings at Taveta, between Voi and Moshi, and Isebania on the main road between Kisumu and Mwanza .

Border crossings from other neighbouring countries include the Songwe border with Malawi and the Tunduma border with Zambia , both of which are in the southwestern corner of Tanzania and are reached by a good (but long) road from Dar es Salaam . There is a crossing with Uganda at Mutukulu, northwest of Bukoba , but this is a rough road and a remote region to get to. The easiest way to get to Uganda from Tanzania is via Nairobi in Kenya , from where there are daily bus services to Kampala. There is a border crossing with Rwanda at Rusomo, although again this is in the remote northwestern part of Tanzania although there are bus services between Mwanza and Kigali. Tanzania does share a border with Mozambique to the south, but road access between the two countries is very limited. Complete Tanzania Visa Form Online

There are many Tanzania local bus companies that ply the main routes over the borders. Several companies run comfortable shuttle bus services between Nairobi and Arusha and Moshi in Tanzania . These are aimed at tourists who fly into Nairobi and are visiting the game parks in Tanzania’s northern circuit region from Arusha, or are climbing Mt Kilimanjaro from Moshi . The buses take about 5-6 hours in either direction, and drivers assist passengers with border procedures

tanzania tourist visa extension

She will try to extend it. She has already made a try at the immigration office in Dar. The clerk told her it can't be extended now, she has to return only a few days before expiration date. He didn't specify exactly how many days. Also, she needs to show a letter explaining why she needs to stay longer.

She is living in Tanga. Maybe she can have her visa extended at the local office. Could you possible tell what the chances are to succeed? There is no information on the Tanzanian government website (I have tried to find it.) On the internet some says they have managed to get it extended at a local immigration office, for example in Arusha . I know there is a local immigration office in Tanga.

An other alternative is to leave the country and re-enter. I have seen people succeeding to do that. They have travelled to the Namanga Border Crossin north of Arusha. Have you any idea of the chances are to go there and then return to Tanzania and receive a new guest visa? How long does she need to stay in Kenya before returning to Tanzania? Is it important that she returns to Tanzania after her old Visa has expired?

Thank you for any advice

' class=

Hey, I have been in this same situation.

If you leave the country, say to go to Kenya, be sure your exit straddles the expiration date. I tried to come back in 2 days before the original visa expired and they refused to give me a fresh one and due to circumstances at the time, I was unable to kill two further days in Kenya.

Of course, a new visa will cost you the $50 or whatever it is.

I returned to Dodoma region and with the kind help of some local Indian businessmen I was steered towards an Immigration official who had earlier refused to help me, but with the right words in the right ear she simply scrawled on my passport and extended my visa for three months.

' class=

I also know a guy in Arusha who for the right words in the right ear (that means some money in your hand also) he will do something for you. Although I've been in Tanga quite often for long periods of time, I don't know the immigration officer there.

If all else fails, I would suggest that she take the bus to Mombasa from Tanga, a rather short journey, stay a day or two on the beach there and let the visa expire, and then return to Tanga and get a new one at the border.

tanzania tourist visa extension

Exiting and returning after expiry is the right way to do it. However your G/F may just be asked how she supports herself when in TZ for 3 months. They are wise to folks working or volunteering on a Tourist Visa.

Hope she has had the Yellow Fever innoculation already!

Thank you a lot for fast replys!

After some discussion she managed to extend the Visa at the local immigration office in Tanga:) Funny thing: She didn't have to pay for it.

And she has taken the Yellow Fever innoculation.

Good news indeed.

Extend Your Stay

A request for an extension of stay (EOS) is generally filed on a Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker ( Form I-129 ) or Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status ( Form I-539 ), depending upon the nonimmigrant classification the petitioner or applicant seeks to extend. The instructions for  Form I-539  and  Form I-129  provide detailed information regarding who may file each form. Supplemental Information for Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status ( Form I-539A ) or Petition for a CNMI-Only Nonimmigrant Transitional Worker ( Form I-129CW ) may also be filed, where applicable. If you remain in the United States longer than authorized, you may be barred from returning and/or you may be removed (deported) from the United States. Check the date in the lower right-hand corner of your  Form I-94, Arrival-Departure Record , to determine the date your authorized stay expires. We recommend that you apply to extend your stay at least 45 days before your authorized stay expires.

You may apply to extend your stay if:

  • You were lawfully admitted into the United States with a nonimmigrant visa;
  • Your nonimmigrant visa status remains valid;
  • You have not committed any crimes that make you ineligible for a visa;
  • You have not violated the conditions of your admission; and
  • Your passport is valid and will remain valid for the duration of your stay.

You may not apply to extend your stay if you were admitted to the United States in the following categories:

  • Visa Waiver Program;
  • Crew member (D nonimmigrant visa);
  • In transit through the United States (C nonimmigrant visa);
  • In transit through the United States without a visa (TWOV);
  • Fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen or dependent of a fiancé(e) (K nonimmigrant visa); or
