Tata Motors is on a wild update streak with its models. First, the Nexon got an update, then the Harrier and now, the flagship Safari gets a revamp. This isn't a minor nip and tuck job, because Tata has gone to town with the changes, and crucially, has focused on giving the Safari its own identity, rather than it being deemed as just a Harrier with a third row. It gets a completely new look, refreshed interior with modern tech and mechanical changes. Let’s see how well it has worked out.

Tata Safari facelift exterior styling

The Safari carries over Tata’s new design language without any change to the sheet metal. The ‘soft’ parts like the bumpers, grille and lights are all new and this has completely changed the look of the car. The LED Daytime Running Lamp runs across the width of the nose, with the Safari also getting sequential turn indicators. The ‘parametric’ grille is a single-piece unit compared to the Harrier’s split setup and is a point of differentiation between the two models, and, for the Safari, they are body-coloured. Further down, the LED headlamps and LED fog lamps are housed in a black casing, which also gets Safari lettering in chrome. Since there is no split grille, the air intake is blacked out with a faux metal scuff plate for that butch look.

Over to the side, the Safari gets 19-inch wheels on the top-spec variant and 17- and 18-inch options on the lower trims. The wheels do a very good job of adding road presence, and also get aero inserts that help reduce drag. You might also remember the wheel design that was previewed on the Tata Sierra concept shown at the Auto Expo. The alloys are wrapped with 245/55 R19 tyres, and being relatively lower profile, they have an impact on ride quality. More on that in a bit. Other Safari traits continue like a rising shoulder line and the roof with the famous kink.

At the rear, things are simpler, with revisions to the tail-lamps, which make it sharper, and an LED strip joining the two. The bumper too is all new with sharp lines, and there is a faux metal bash plate for that rugged look. That said, one of the most important updates is seen when you wag your leg under the bumper: the boot now gets gesture control for opening, and is finally electric.

Tata Safari facelift interior and features

Like the Harrier, the Safari comes specced with the ‘persona’ that you choose. The top-spec ‘Accomplished’ gets a dual-tone interior with white and brown upholstery. It has an air of premiumness, but the light-coloured seats and panels on the steering and doors will be difficult to maintain. The passenger side also gets an artificial wood panel with pinstriping which looks upmarket but may not be to everyone’s tastes.

tata safari designer name

The Safari gets the same four-spoke steering as the Harrier along with a gloss black panel and the backlit Tata logo that you just can't keep free of smudges and marks. There is also a fully digital instrument cluster that has customisable layouts, and the option of a map view once you’ve connected your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That said, for a full map view, Android users will have to use Google Maps and Apple users will have to use Apple Maps. The cluster also displays drive mode changes, terrain mode changes and ADAS settings as well. The brightness, sharpness and overall viewing angles are good.

Next is the 12.3-inch touchscreen that gets wireless connectivity for Apple and Android and is slick to respond. It also packs in a lot of the settings for HVAC, ADAS, air purifier, audio modes and mood lighting. The audio system is also updated from a 9-speaker system to 10 speakers, along with a sub-woofer and 13 presets in the screen to choose from. The presets are very well calibrated and do enhance the music experience. You can also have individual modes for individual seats making the whole experience even more personal. The other highlight on the Safari is the 360-degree camera, which is high resolution and is a big plus while manoeuvring this SUV.

tata safari designer name

Under the screen are the HVAC controls on a gloss black panel, with the only physical buttons being the temperature toggles for the dual-zone climate control. Everything else, including the fan speed, is on a touch-based panel. Adjusting the fan speed or even functions like the electric tailgate opening is rather difficult as the feedback and response from the panel aren’t good. On the move, this would be an even more frustrating experience, and it’s better to use voice commands, which, despite not being the quickest, at least doesn't let you fumble.

Further down is a wireless charging pad that is difficult to access. You need to angle your phone in an awkward manner trying to dodge the knurled terrain response selector and cram your phone in, which, inevitably, will hit the panels around. Taking it out is the same story as you more often than not end up hitting the HVAC buttons or scraping your phone. For charging, there is a USB-A and a 45W type-C port as well.

tata safari designer name

Next is the terrain response selector that is unnecessarily large, and beside it are the non-backlit drive mode buttons. When you do change the drive modes, however, the ambient lighting too changes colour momentarily. Green for Eco, blue for City and red for Sport. What’s also new on the Safari is the drive selector for the automatic version, which is a shift-by-wire mechanism, and an electric parking brake, which replaces the aircraft-style brake lever on the top-spec version. The centre storage also gets vents to be used as a cool box, and a USB-A and a type-C port as well.

Tata Safari facelift seating

The seats on the new Safari are powered for both driver and passenger with memory functions for the driver and ventilation for both. They are fairly broad and supportive, but cushioning is on the firmer side. However, on the whole, the new Safari is leaps ahead of the previous gen, both in terms of features and design.

tata safari designer name

There has been no change to the Safari’s wheelbase, so space in the middle row remains unchanged, The captain seat version also gets ventilation and there are USB-A and type-C ports here as well. There are AC vents in the B-pillar too, but surprisingly, no blower control for the middle row. The theatre-like seating position allows you to get a good view out, and the addition of sunblinds is a plus to have on hot days. What further elevates the sense of space is the panoramic sunroof, which gets ambient lighting and adds flair to the cabin at night.

Entering the third row past the captain seats isn’t easy since they don’t tumble down. They only recline and don’t slide forward enough for easy access. It’s easier to use the space between the two seats as a passage to access the third row. However, once you’re seated at the back, the amount of room is impressive even for tall adults. Sure, headroom is tight for occupants over six feet, but the adjustable backrest angle and sliding middle row make the third row properly usable, and the most spacious in its class. There are three-point seat belts for two, individual headrests, AC blower controls and USB-A and a type-C ports. The downside is the boot space, which, with all three rows up, is only good for a couple of soft bags.

tata safari designer name

In terms of safety, the Safari gets the usual goody bag of sensors and assists, along with ADAS. The Safari gets six airbags as standard, and the top-spec version gets an additional knee airbag, taking the count to seven.

Tata Safari engine, gearbox and performance

The updated Safari gets the same 2.0-litre diesel engine making 170hp and 350Nm as before, but in BS6.2 guise. Tata claims to have upped the damping and refinement but, to be honest, it is still one of the sore points of the Safari: there is that typical diesel clatter at idle that seeps into the cabin. As you get going and the engine speed rises, the gruff noise increases. That said, the engine feels strong to perform and has a wide torque band. Mid-range is where you will get that punch, and response overall is solid. The Safari is also very happy and comfortable at highway speeds. Changing the drive modes also changes the response, just as before. In Eco and City, the engine is laidback, but switch to Sport, and there is a noticeable gain in response. This is largely to do with the pedal mapping, which, as you change modes, alters the response to the accelerator, giving you a noticeable change in driving manners.

tata safari designer name

Mated to the engine is the same six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Quick shifts and lightning-fast responses are not something it prefers, and the shifts are carried over in a leisurely manner. Sure, sport mode does help, but inherently, it's a relaxed gearbox.

To gain more control, there is also the option of paddle shifters, a new addition in the updated Safari. However, they don’t particularly enhance the driving experience as manually shifting via the paddles isn’t very quick or responsive. Operate the paddle shifters and the powertrain automatically defaults to Sport mode, but the experience isn’t exactly sporty. The shifts are slow and downshifts are frustratingly delayed if the engine is at high revs. This doesn’t allow for enthusiastic manual shifting and it's best to let the gearbox work on its own. What is another irritant is operating the new shift-by-wire shifter, which requires the right technique. During three-point turns, shifting from D to R and back is a fiddly affair, since there isn't a clear response from the lever. It often gets stuck in N or simply doesn’t change the gear. This will take owners some time to get used to, and a lot of patience.

Tata Safari handling and ride comfort

Speaking of three-point turns, arguably the biggest and the most important update on this Safari is the steering system. Gone is the older hydraulic power steering unit, and in its place is a modern electric power steering (EPS) that has transformed the way the Safari handles. To start off, at low and city speeds, you no longer have to muscle the car around, and get your arm workout done. The steering is light and easy in Eco and City mode, making parking very convenient. In Sports, it does weigh up to add some feel while driving. Three-point turns are done with minimal effort and getting it out of tight spots is very easy too. Tata has also increased the track on the new Safari owing to the bigger wheels, but it isn't something that was noticeable through corners.

On the subject of ride, Tata has retuned the suspension with updated dampers, spring rates and new bushings, giving the Safari a softer setup than before. However, shod with big, 19-inch wheels and lower profile tyres, bump absorption is compromised. Over a broken patch of road, you will notice sharp movements and potholes are met with quite a thud. The toughness of that Land Rover platform does shine through with the taut and tight body control the faster you go. On the highway, the ride is composed and flat, and the sense of control and stability you get is the hallmark of the Safari, which makes it a great high speed cruiser.

tata safari designer name

Tata Safari ADAS performance

The other big talking point on the Safari is the ADAS: it gets adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Lane keep assist is also part of the package, but will be introduced later as a software update.

tata safari designer name

In our conditions, the ADAS works well, especially the adaptive cruise control which does the job even at slow bumper-to-bumper speeds. The lane departure warning system is good at detecting lanes correctly too. What could have been better, is the automatic emergency braking. We found that despite driving closer than usual to the car in front (done for testing the ADAS) it did not activate the brakes, despite adjusting the setting of the brake activation to the maximum distance. Tata claims this is done specifically with India’s erratic traffic conditions, but we would have liked the emergency braking to kick in from a safe distance. Rear cross-traffic alerts and blind spot monitoring, on the other hand, work flawlessly.

Another plus point is that the Safari, along with the new Harrier, recently received a 5-star rating in adult and child occupant protection by Global NCAP.

Tata Safari verdict

Prices for the Safari start at Rs 16.19 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom, India) for the base Smart manual variant.  With this update, many of the Safari’s weaknesses have been addressed, with the electric power steering, electric tail gate, more features and a modern design. However, the engine refinement and some ergonomic issues are still present.

tata safari designer name

But what the Safari will be banking on is its fantastic road presence, hugely practical and spacious cabin, and lastly, the wide array of variants on offer. It sure is a lot more car for the money now, and that’s something SUV buyers today are willing to pay for.

What is the logic of such a steep price hike within 4 years? Not just this model, it seems like the luxury makers have collectively driven up pricing of all models in the last 5 years in a super aggressive manner - which is neither linked to change in taxes/ duties or exchange rates. Could this be a collusion of some sorts?

  • Tata Motors has revived the legendary nameplate with the new Safari
  • It started as the Buzzard concept, then it became Gravitas and now Safari
  • Pre-bookings for the new Safari will begin on February 4, 2021

The famed Tata Safari is back!! The car was once the most aspired vehicle for many a middle-class buyer. Its good looks and large proportions won it a legion of fans - since its debut over two decades ago. We last saw a Safari on sale in a Tata Motors showroom back in 2019... And now it has returned with an all-new generation. The car that's ready for launch has had an interesting metamorphosis - especially with its name. The 'three-row Harrier' or H7X, started as the Buzzard at the Geneva Motor show in 2019, became the Gravitas when it debuted in India at the Delhi Auto Expo a year later. And now after almost another year, it's market-ready with another rechristening! Now I have to say, I'm not one of the people who buys the theory that this car was always supposed to be named the Safari! If you ask me, the Harrier should have been the Safari, and I have said that now for some time, so I won't drone on about it. What I will say though, is that visually the side profile is where you do pick up hints of the Safari on this newer car. And that is intentional.

The Tata Safari takes its design cues from the Harrier that are hard to miss but the overall presence is larger and more imposing.

But any similarity to the old Safari is way overshadowed by how much the car will remind you of the Harrier. The new Safari looks like the Harrier, but there are subtle differences. The front grill has Tata's 'tri-arrow' motif that design chief Pratap Bose has spoken of at length. The Harrier has a mesh or honeycomb-like pattern. I actually like the chrome detailing on the grille. There is more chrome around the headlamp housing, while on the harrier the fog lamp housing is surrounded by a similar chrome edging. 18-inch alloy wheels on the top end XZ variant only (all other variants get 16-inchers, and yes on the Harrier it is also 16, and the top-end gets 17-inch wheels). The Tata Safari drives in with an identical wheelbase to the Harrier, so for those of you who may have thought this is a long wheelbase version - think again. But the car is longer overall by 63 mm to the Harrier. And that stretch comes on the rear overhang. The boot space is longer, and the bumper and tailgate have a different design and angle as compared to the Harrier.

87aebpug

Similarities with the older Safari are more evident on the profile

As a result, there is no sleek slimmed down C-pillar merging into the rear - like in the harrier but a distinct separation - with a big window added to give the third row more light and sense of space. There is a stepped roof that is a very Safari-esque and it's been intentionally done. The roof rails are different - and get a chrome detail with the Safari badge, as well as a roof rail side cap - another hark back to the older Safari. The new tailgate and fenders also give you new taillights that are very different to the Harrier's. The chrome door handles are a definite NO for me, but I can see why the top variant would need that given the competition set. Overall though the Safari is good looking, but let us not beat about the point that it definitely looks like a 'Harrier Plus'.

Like the Harrier, the new Tata Safari is also built on the Land Rover D8 platform derived Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture or OMEGARC. It is 4661 mms long and 1786 mm high, which is 80 mm more than the Harrier - largely owing to that stepped roof. The width of 1894 mm, and more importantly the wheelbase of 2741 mm remain exactly the same as the Harrier. There are just 3 colour options on the Tata Safari - Royale Blue, Daytona Grey and Orcus White.

1qd6gors

The cabin is upmarket with the 'Oyster White' theme and spacious too, especially with that massive  panoramic sunroof,

Tech and Interior

The cabin's colour palette is nothing like the Harrier's. The 'oyster white' theme is rather plush looking. The dash in dual tone black and white looks appealing and the 8.8-inch floating island touchscreen system sits right in the centre. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition and voice alerts. Tata's now famous iRA or Intelligent Real Time Assist connected car tech also finds a place in the Safari. It comprises location-based services, remote commands and live vehicle diagnostics among other features like voice commands. The mid variants get a 7" screen. But in an era where even smaller cars like the i20 or Sonet have a 10.25-inch screen - these may seem small.

The feature list is extensive on the new Safari and on par with what you've come to expect with a Rs. 20 lakh worth vehicle like the electronic parking brake or iRA connected car tech

The feature list is pretty long and that you expect in a car that will cost around Rs. 20 lakh. Just like the touchscreen, the 9-speaker JBL system, 7-inch TFT display instrument cluster, electrically adjustable driver side seat, leatherette upholstery, and electronic parking brake only find their way in this top XZ variant of the SUV. The addition of the electronic parking brake, in particular, is a welcome addition, and it certainly gives the Safari an upper hand over its rivals. The option of a big panoramic sunroof which called the Majestic Skydome by Tata is available on the top 2 variants while captain seats on the second row are only available on this top trim. All other trims get a bench seat with a 60:40 split ratio. Using the 'boss mode' the front passenger seat can be pushed forward, a feature that helps create more legroom in row two. You can also slide the second-row seats and recline them.

bvri1694

Access to the third row is cumbersome but all-around space isn't all that bad. Adults will fit in but definitely not where you want to be for long distances

Access to the third row is a bit cumbersome though, as a result of the wheelbase not being increased. In its presentation to us, Tata Motors said the third row is very comfortable, very generous, and very well designed - even for long distances. Every carmaker who makes a car with three rows will tell you the same about their car! But the truth is - the only vehicles which have comfortable third rows are large inter cities buses (they also have great fourth and fifth rows)! Now that said, yes, I have to appreciate the sense of space in the Safari's third row - pretty remarkable given that the length of the vehicle has only increased by 63 mm. You get 889 mm of headroom and 832 mm of legroom back here. Under-thigh support is kind of non-existent. But you do get a sense of reasonable comfort, at least for short distances - even for someone with my height; and that's because the seat back angle is well proportioned and well designed. So, definitely great for kids, and not so bad for adults - but not for very long distances. What's also nice is that you also get your own AC vents here with your own blower control, 2 USB ports, cupholders, and a little bit of space for storing a few things.

25ohaq1s

The cargo space fully expands to a humongous 1658 litres on the new Tata Safari with the second and third-row folded

So how much is then left for you to carry your luggage if the third row is in play? Like most 3-row cars, not too much, because what's left is just 73 litres. You can fold down the third row and the 3-seater second-row bench. Third row down gets you 750 litres, which is more than the Harrier. Second row folded gives you a cavernous 1658 litres.

ol8pps34

The 2021 Tata Safari will be offered with a manual and automatic transmission right from the launch. There is just the 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel for now

Now we know this engine from before. The 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel does duty on the Harrier as well, and nothing changes when it comes to figures. At your disposal is maximum power of 168 bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm which kicks in at 1750 rpm and stays on till 2500 rpm. The good thing is that unlike a few of its recent cars, including the Harrier, Tata is offering an automatic and manual from word go. I began driving the 6-Speed manual first. The car handles well, there is a reasonable sense of cornering, good amount of control, and you don't get a sense of the big bulk of the car - at first. But get to higher speeds and you certainly do. And that's where some body roll creeps in, which is a little bit annoying. Outside of that, I think the stellar achievement of Tata engineering is just how great the ride quality is!

d66kija

The automatic is particularly nice on the new Tata Safari and does the job well. A lot of buyers in this space will particularly appreciate its availability

The suspension is really well-tuned for our roads. And so, on the whole, the Fiat-derived drivetrain does well. But the gearshift can still get a bit smoother, and its throws too could be shorter. That just adds to the feeling of bulk. But what is evident is that there isn't too much lag. Another thing that I noticed is that the turning radius is pretty sharp for a car of this size, so manoeuvring in city traffic and parking should not be a big hassle.

fe4i99a8

There is a notable difference between how the new Tata Safari drives between Eco and Sport mode. There isn't 4x4 though as Tata says the market for the same is too small

The automatic gearbox is something a lot of carandbike readers and viewers have been asking about. The Harrier got it last year and yes, the Safari gets the same one. This Hyundai sourced torque converter gearbox is very easy to use, and from the performance perspective - you won't be disappointed. Is it electric and really quick? Of course not, but then we are also a little spoiled by the DCTs that so many cars have these days. It is smart that tata finally understood that an auto is a must - especially because I do believe in this segment in particular, a lot of people will want an automatic. The automatic Safari certainly feels like a more refined car to drive, and given a choice I would go for it over the manual. And since the Land Rover DNA is at play, Tata says the car is equipped enough to take on challenging terrains, even without all-wheel drive. Plus, the signature tri-arrow patterns is used on the automatic Safari's gear-shifter as well.

aprh0rio

The 2021 Tata Safari comes with three different driving modes - City, Eco and Sport and it gets a terrain response system

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode. And that is where the big question comes in about the Safari brand name. To a lot of people, the Safari name is synonymous with 4 Wheel Drive. Tata insists that it's too small a market in terms of actual percentage of buyers who'd opt for 4X4 version, for the company to actually make one. But the platform supports it, and so adding one in later will not be tough. But not having a 4X4 (from a brand perspective) could hurt the Safari, but from the sales perspective, okay I agree - it probably will not.

4ne1hba4

The top variants get 6 airbags, hill descent control, ISOFIX child seat mounts on the new Safari

The list of safety features is long here. Dual airbags, ABS or antilock brakes with ESP or electronic stability programme, disc brakes on all wheels, hill hold control and traction control - all come as standard. 6 airbags, hill descent control and ISOFIX child seat mounts can be found only on this top trim. You also get a tyre pressure monitoring system, cruise control and a reverse parking camera.

Tata Motors could keep things aggressive and undercut the competition with a sub Rs. 14 lakh pricing

Expected Pricing

Bookings for the Tata Safari will begin on the 4th of February at a cost of Rs. 30,000, though of course we still await a price announcement. The car will likely be offered in 4 trims. Tata would do well to keep the prices close to the Harrier, which starts at Rs. 13.99 lakh and goes up to Rs. 19.05 lakhs (ex-showroom). For reference, the diesel MG Hector Plus is priced between Rs. 14.66 and 19.13 lakh, while the diesel Toyota Innova Crysta ranges from Rs. 16.64 lakh to Rs. 24.33 lakh. Tata would do well to undercut them both, as also keep an eye on the upcoming second-generation Mahindra XUV 500.

All-new Safari SUV’s design explained by Tata Motors’ Chief Designer Pratap Bose

Tata Safari has been an iconic nameplate in India. The homegrown manufacturer has uploaded a video in which Pratap Bose, Vice President Global Design, Tata Motors explains the design of the SUV. The video has been uploaded on YouTube. The Safari is known for its capability, luxury, ruggedness and purposeful nature. Safari was one of the first luxury SUVs that was first launched in 1998. However, it was discontinued last year due to the BS6 emission norms and the new safety norms.

Because Safari has such a big following, it was a big thing when Tata announced earlier this year that they will be launching the Safari which is previously codenamed as Gravitas. We all have already seen the Gravitas at the Auto Expo and before that, we have seen as Buzzard at the Geneva Motor Show. The fans of Safari had a mixed reaction for the upcoming Safari. While some of them are excited and happy that the Safari will be making its return. Some people are not happy that the upcoming Safari will not have a 4×4 drivetrain. The all-wheel-drive system and the capabilities of the older generation Safari were what made it so iconic. Having said that Tata has mentioned that the upcoming Safari’s architecture does support for future 4×4 drivetrain and even electrification. So, we would just have to wait and watch what Tata decides to do and if they launch a 4×4 system with the 2021 Safari.

The new Safari is a stretched-up version of the Harrier. It is 63 mm longer and 80 mm taller than the Harrier. The rear overhang of the Safari is longer than the Harrier to accommodate the third-row seats. It is also taller with a stepped-up roof which will help in the headroom of third-row occupants. The wheelbase and the width of the SUV stay the same at 2,741 mm and 1,894 mm. Tata has already released a teaser for the 2021 Safari that showcases the front and says “Sharpened for Sophistication”.

All-new Safari SUV’s design explained by Tata Motors’ Chief Designer Pratap Bose

The front design of the SUV is also similar to the Harrier. However, it gets a more premium looking chrome grille that gets tri-arrow inserts in them. The grille seamlessly connects to the LED Daytime Running Lamps. It will continue to get split headlamp design where the LED strip is placed above which also doubles as a turn indicator, whereas the headlamp unit will sit below and will house a single projector unit. The side profile of the SUV will be longer and will get a different set of alloy wheels. At the rear, there will be a slim set of LED tail lamps.

All-new Safari SUV’s design explained by Tata Motors’ Chief Designer Pratap Bose

Tata Safari will get the same 2.0-litre Kyrotec diesel engine source from Fiat that is doing duty on the Tata Harrier. The engine will be producing 170 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 350 Nm. It will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. For now, the SUV will be a front-wheel-drive vehicle only. However, we hope that Tata offers a proper all-wheel-drive drivetrain in the future to continue the legacy of the iconic Safari. Once launched the Safari will be the new flagship for Tata Motors and will compete against the likes of Mahindra 2021 XUV500, MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Hyundai Creta 7-seater. Tata Safari 2023: A Flagship with Enhanced Features

Dive into tata safari's transformation with enhanced design, features, and performance.

Lamborghini Urus SE unveiled — Going Clean

Over the past few months, Tata Motors has been on a mission to refresh its entire product portfolio, ensuring that its vehicles stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. While the Harrier and Safari are two models that have retained much of their mechanical prowess of their predecessors, they’ve undergone a transformation in terms of design and tech upgrades. The Safari has always held a special place in the hearts of SUV enthusiasts in India, and now, Tata Motors wants to reignite that with a fresh new appeal.

The Safari’s slogan – ‘Reclaim your life’ – has resonated with enthusiasts and families alike, signifying the promise of adventure and a life well-lived. As we explore the latest iteration of this beloved SUV, the question that looms is whether Tata has updated its flagship offering enough to live up to its iconic past.

We’ve had our hands on the new Tata #Safari , and it’s time to share a sneak peek! For the full story on this updated SUV, visit our website https://t.co/whAJ2icnxF . ? #MotoringWorld #TataSafari #NewSafari @TataMotors_Cars pic.twitter.com/e6MqFFS6Wl — Motoring World (@MyMotoringWorld) October 15, 2023

The Safari’s visual upgrade has significant exterior enhancements, an overhauled interior, and a refreshed array of features. Although it has always boasted a handsome front end, Tata has decided to up the ante with the new model. What’s commendable is that (in contrast with the face-lifted version that shared a close resemblance with the Harrier) this time around, there are distinguishing elements.

Ultraviolette F77 Mach 2 launched, prices start from Rs 2.99 lakh

It now sports vertically oriented LED headlamps, accompanied by a revamped grille featuring distinctive inserts. The front also boasts an attention-grabbing full-width LED light bar, now equipped with a welcoming function. On the sides, Tata has refrained from introducing any alterations to the Safari’s sheet metal. However, it gets an upgrade in the form of larger 19-inch alloys. Speaking of alloy wheels, the ones fitted on the Safari are a design carried over from the Tata Sierra concept, showcased a few years ago. These wheels complement the Safari’s overall look quite well. The eagle-eyed observer will also spot the ‘Safari’ badging adorning the front doors.

Moving to the rear, a re-profiled bumper and updated connected LED tail lamps greet you, complete with a welcome and goodbye function that amplifies the vehicle’s sense of premium elegance.

The new Safari retains a familiar dashboard layout, albeit with crisper lines and contours. It’s hard to miss the upgraded 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a step up from the previous 10.25-inch version. The lower console area introduces a new touch-based AC control panel. In the automatic variants, you’ll find a new rotary dial with an integrated screen.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Motoring World (@motoring_world)

The driver’s seat greets you with a fresh four-spoke steering wheel adorned with an illuminated ‘Tata’ logo and convenient paddle shifters. The wheel tends to attract fingerprints, so it’s advisable to keep a microfibre cloth within easy reach. Also, the driver-side 10.25-inch digital driver’s display offers various views and customisation choices, replacing the previous 7-inch setup.

Tata now offers several new features, including a powered rear tailgate with gesture-based opening and an additional knee airbag, bringing the total to seven. The car boasts an updated 10-speaker JBL sound system, dual-zone climate control, and rear sunshades. Other features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car technology, and keyless entry with push-button start continue to impress. In the Safari six-seater variant, front and rear ventilated seats add to the comfort factor, along with a panoramic sunroof. The cabin’s light interior materials create an airy ambience, and the third row in the Safari stands out as one of the more comfortable third-row options in the market.

In terms of safety, the Safari maintains its robust features, including electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, and the previously available advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Notably, the ADAS now includes adaptive cruise control, which adds convenience to the driving experience. During our test drive in the busy streets of Pune, we had the chance to try out the ADAS features, particularly the close-distance follow feature in heavy traffic. It’s worth noting that the system performed admirably without being overly intrusive.

The Tata Safari retains its dependable 2-litre diesel engine, delivering 168 bhp of power and 35.69 kgm of torque. This engine can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Notably, the automatic variant now features paddle shifters, adding a touch of sophistication to the driving experience. In terms of performance, the engine remains noisy when pushed. We appreciated the automatic transmission, as it smoothly shifted both up and down after engaging the paddle shifter. While we didn’t have sufficient time to carry out a fuel efficiency test, it’s likely to be similar to the previous generation due to the same engine.

When it comes to handling, the new Safari is literally several generations ahead of the earlier model. It is surprisingly manoeuvrable through turns, thanks to its relatively lower weight, sturdier monocoque and more contemporary suspension. Its ride quality has improved, too, but it’s not exceptional.

Meanwhile, the steering is quite responsive. The new Safari is surprisingly nimble for its size, offering relatively quick and precise handling. Although there’s a slight degree of roll after turning, it remains well within acceptable limits.

With its fresh design, improved interiors and features, the Safari is a compelling package. It maintains its status as a comfortable and spacious family SUV. However, the engine noise can be a concern when pushed hard. Competing in a market that includes the MG Hector Plus, Hyundai Alcazar, and the upcoming new generation Mahindra XUV700, it faces hefty competition. On paper, it’s an SUV that’s ready to help you ‘Reclaim your life’, but we will have to see if the sales figures also reflect that.

The all-new Safari will be available in nine variants, starting from XE and going up to the XZA+.

In its new avatar, the Safari takes forward the brand’s rich legacy by combining Tata Motors’ Impact 2.0 design language with the proven capability of OMEGARC, the architecture derived from the renowned D8 platform from Land Rover – the gold standard of SUVs worldwide. The OMEGARC, architecture has already proven its mettle with the success of the Harrier.

SUVs is the fastest growing passenger vehicle segment in the country and the new Safari will accelerate the momentum gained by the company’s consistently growing SUV sales which have resulted in a growth of 20% YTD when compared to the same period last year.

In a challenging year, Tata Motors has exhibited a stellar performance in the passenger vehicles market last year, by clocking in over 23,000 unit sales every month successively from October 2020. Furthermore, in Q3FY21, the Tata Motors PV business posted its highest sales in the last 33 quarters. The rising demand can be attributed to the BS6 range, which was launched last year, under the New Forever philosophy of the company. Demand was visible across all products of the New Forever range, including the premium hatchback Tata Altroz and the BS6 Harrier, which stole the show.

New Tata Safari

The New Tata Safari

Not a chip off the old block but carrying on the legacy

June 2021     |     722 words     |     3-minute read

Tata Motors Ltd discontinued the original Tata Safari after nearly two decades of service and a few makeovers and updates. The brand obviously resonates with customers, so it is no surprise that the automotive giant reintroduced it.

The new Tata Safari is based on the Harrier but in an extended avatar, with some additional styling cues and a third row for passengers. In the new version, the third row seats are front facing — making them more comfortable, practical and safer.

The front design is similar to the Harrier’s with a judicious use of chrome for a more ‘premium feel’. The length and a stepped roof — instead of a sloping one — were necessary to give a raised seating to the passengers in the rear, for a clearer view through the front windscreen. This also meant there is enough headroom for third-row passengers. There are a lot of differences at the rear when compared to the Harrier. One can’t miss the fact that the rear hatch is straighter and the bumpers look leaner. The tail lamps are also larger than the ones on its smaller sibling. The alloy wheels look identical though. Maybe Tata Motors could have changed that.

tata safari designer name

In terms of size, the new Tata Safari is substantially longer than its older version but not as tall. Reason being that there is no need for it. Unlike the older Tata Safari, the third-row bench sits lower and access to it is through the middle doors and not the rear hatch. Two types of seating arrangements are being made available. You get proper captain seats for the middle row in the six-seater and a three-seat bench in the seven-seater version. The second-row folds flat and tumbles over in the seven-seater for accessing the third row, while in the six-seater you can simply walk through the space between the captain seats.

The powertrain is similar to the Harrier’s. So, the FIAT-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine is the only one on offer. Tata Motors isn’t strapping a petrol yet, thanks to a steady demand and practicality for an oil burner in this segment. This is available with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual gearbox. Power figures are also identical — 170ps and 350Nm of torque. This is a proven unit but has noticeable diesel clatter noise, not vibrations; but with enough grunt at the low end to take the SUV (sports utility vehicle) flying past others.

tata safari designer name

The automatic version is quite convenient. It is easy to slot but cannot match the manual version’s response to throttle inputs. I guess a bigger, heavier SUV has taken a bit of the sheen off the box, as it works just right in the Harrier. The steering is also on the heavier side, which offers confidence at speed and you get a big SUV feel. The six-speed manual Tata Safari has a more exhilarating drive. No 4x4 is being offered, since takers for a more expensive four-wheel-drive are far and few. True, but it would have been a good connect to its ancestor and its quintessential off-roading ability. Maybe it will appear in future models. Fingers crossed.

The interiors

The interiors are pretty classy and look the part of a vehicle this segment and price. Tata Motors has added a premium-looking, oyster-white interior with an elegant, wood-finished dashboard. The seats are big, firmly cushioned and well contoured. The panels look rich and seem to be fitted well. The third-row — the main differentiator — is big enough to accommodate two average-sized adults. The rear has air-con fan controls on the right and two USB charging slots on the left.

tata safari designer name

Under-thigh support in the third row isn’t as much as the second row because the floor is high and if the seats were any higher, headroom would have been an issue. There is room for one large suitcase with the third row up. But fold it and there is enough for any cross-country road trip.

Do not try to draw a parallel between the old and new Tata Safari, and it will be an interesting SUV for someone on the lookout for a well-built three-row SUV. A more relaxed drive in the automatic transmission or a peppier manual, the all new Tata Safari just got a wider audience than it ever had.

Tata Safari facelift spied

In the lead-up to the launch of the Safari facelift in October this year , Tata Motors continues testing the updated SUV on our roads. A fresh sighting of a camouflaged test mule gives us the clearest look yet at the design details of the facelifted Safari. The Safari facelift takes design inspiration from the  Harrier EV concept  that was previewed at Auto Expo earlier this year. A majorly overhauled interior along with a new turbo-petrol engine under the hood is also expected to be on the cards.

  • Safari facelift to borrow Harrier EV design cues
  • Prices likely to be announced around October this year
  • New 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine could come later

Tata Safari facelift exterior design

Previous sightings of the Safari facelift test mules have already hinted at a completely redesigned front fascia. It will retain a split LED headlamp set-up, but the upper LED DRL will be a full-width light bar stretching across the bonnet. Meanwhile, the main headlamp cluster in the bumper below is now vertically positioned.

tata safari designer name

The latest spy images reveal a blacked-out treatment around the headlamp housing and there even seems to be an air vent integrated into the cluster. Not only do the new headlamps look a lot sleeker than the bulbous units on the current Safari, but the blacked-out treatment could give a distinctive dual-tone look to the fascia of the SUV. The redesign has resulted in a completely new bumper, and there’s also an all-new grille with slim horizontal slats.

tata safari designer name

There aren’t major changes in profile, but the new spy shots also give us a first look at the blacked-out, twin five-spoke alloy wheels. While the rear continues to be heavily camouflaged, the Safari will likely get new, slimmer and connected LED tail-lamps, and a slightly tweaked rear bumper. These design updates will also make it to the ICE-powered Harrier facelift that’s also due later this year.

Tata Safari facelift interior and features

Although the interior of the Safari facelift has not been spied yet, we expect a major overhaul there too. Tata has already introduced the new 10.25-inch touchscreen on the  Harrier  and Safari with the  Red Dark Edition , but we expect a few more changes to the dashboard design. Perhaps the new two-spoke steering wheel that was recently seen on the  Nexon facelift test mule  could also make it to the Safari facelift.

Tata Safari facelift spied: could be petrol or EV

The Safari facelift will continue with the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 170hp and 350Nm of torque, and comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. Tata's  new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine  which is currently under development could join the line-up at a later stage.

Tata Safari facelift production, launch plan

As we recently reported, Tata Motors will start production of the Safari facelift at its Pimpri plant in September 2023, and a market launch could be expected by October 2023, just before Diwali. Upon launch, it will continue to rival with the likes of the  7-seat Mahindra XUV700 , and the  Hyundai Alcazar .
