Openings: Stylish new restaurant offers Florida flavors at West Palm Beach golf course

An airy new restaurant offering golf course views has opened at The Park , West Palm Beach’s lavishly revamped municipal golf club. The 192-acre, 18-hole golf property, which reopened in April, was rebuilt as part of a public/private partnership with the city, which owns the land.

Those new greens can be seen from the patio and through the windows of The House restaurant, which made its debut Oct. 12 and is open to the public.   

Diners can now lunch on Cobb salad that’s topped with Southern fried buttermilk shrimp, butter-poached lobster club sandwiches and Florida spiny lobster corn dogs. For dinner, they can enjoy refined entrees that include a trio of Florida snapper varieties on one plate, New York strip steak with mashed potatoes and chimichurri, and a pot pie that’s rich with lobster chunks.

The inspired menu and kitchen are in the hands of veteran executive chef Jason Van Bomel, whose culinary career includes nearly 15 years at the Four Seasons resort in Palm Beach and, most recently, six years at Jupiter’s 1000 North, the waterfront restaurant partly owned by NBA superstar Michael Jordan.

When Van Bomel first walked onto the property at The Park on Georgia Avenue, he was surprised, he said.

“It’s this wide, open expanse of green. I thought, ‘How is this hiding back here?’” he said by phone on a recent day.

What was hiding back there was the site of the defunct West Palm Beach Golf Course, designed by the late golf-course architect Dick Wilson in 1947. The city closed the municipal property in 2018.

Van Bomel, 50, is no newcomer to Palm Beach County. Raised in Lantana, he has lived most of his life in the county, except for six years spent abroad working in Australia and England. He had driven past the golf course property off Interstate 95, never seeing what was there. 

But once he visited the place, he felt an instant “Florida” connection that reinforced his culinary style, which focuses on regional and seasonal products. Van Bomel crafted the menu accordingly.

“Primarily, it’s Florida seafood and the produce of Florida, all the ingredients that make Florida unique,” he said. “It’s a menu that creates a sense of place.”

While his lunch and dinner menus offer steak, chicken, burgers and pizzas, including a pie that’s topped with Loxahatchee-grown mushrooms, Van Bomel wanted to emphasize fresh Florida fish and seafood. Not only because he loves to fish but because he believes the city could use more fresh seafood restaurant options.

So his menu offers pickled Key West pink shrimp served with horseradish and lemon, Florida Venus clams in a bacon-leek-tomato broth, a local seafood bowl with boniato and yuca in achiote broth, and, yes, Florida spiny lobster tucked into pot pies and corn dogs.

The top-selling menu items so far have been The House Burger and spiny lobster corn dogs at lunch and the New York strip steak and trio of Florida snapper at dinner, he said. A weekend brunch menu is in the works but not ready to be rolled out, he said.

Lunch prices range from $6 to $24 for starters and salads, $15 to $31 for sandwiches and tacos, and $12 to $16 for pizza. Dinner prices range from $11 to $19 for small plates, $22 to $42 to large plates and up to $8 for sides. 

A gardening aficionado, Van Bomel has another project in the works on the property: an herb garden.

“I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got a site located already,” said the chef, who plans to use the herbs and other garden produce in his dishes. 

He’s hoping they can plant some tropical fruit trees once the garden “gets up and going”. That’s the dream, to grow a lush sense of Florida within a revived oasis in a quickly expanding metropolis.
