The Seven Lakes Road

This is one of the most beautiful excursions in argentina: the seven lakes’ road..

Nature slowly comes back to life, flowers show up as a miracle that has remained hidden under the snow, the forest wakes up filled with colors and the sound of singing birds… All that beauty is there, waiting for you, framed by a scenic road that joins Villa La Angostura with San Martin de Los Andes.

You can start the Seven Lakes’ road either from Bariloche  or from  San Martin de Los Andes . It goes through all the places situated between Villa La Angostura and San Martin de Los Andes, thus you can also take other starting points for your trip. The one we are going to describe now begins at Villa La Angostura and gives you the chance to visit two national parks: Nahuel Huapi and Lanin. You shouldn’t miss this trip, some of the most wonderful lakes and forests in the region and the most secluded places are awaiting you.

Ruta de los 7 Lagos - Seven Lakes' Road

There are 184 km from Bariloche to San Martín de Los Andes. You will need at least one entire day to take this excursion, or better yet, two or three days, if possible. You can find lodging either at Villa La Angostura or San Martin de Los Andes and, during the summer season, hostels and campings function inside the National Park .

The journey

From Villa La Angostura you take national route 231 to Portezuelo. Eleven kilometers later you change to route 234. As you approach the village, the Nahuel Huapi Lake becomes visible, and also two other lakes: the Correntoso (Swift) Lake, ideal for salmon-fishing, and the Espejo (Mirror), which was given this name because of its clear waters, and which has a beautiful panoramic viewpoint and also a camping area with benches and tables where bonfire making is allowed.

The road goes on – this is the most solitary part of the journey – skirting part of the Pichi Traful river, until you get to Traful. The slopes surrounding this path are densely populated with coihue and colihue cane forests. At kilometer 130 you get to the forest ranger’s cabin and there is a lateral road that leads to the north arm of Traful Lake. It goes 2 kilometers through a narrow path that ends at the lake’s side at the mouth of Pichi Traful river. This is a splendid site to camp.

Ruta de los 7 Lagos - Seven Lakes' Road

The route goes on, and after crossing the bridge over the river, it goes up a steep slope through the forest. Five kilometers later a small lake, the Escondido (Hidden) Lake, lies to the left of the road. It is worth parking the car here to appreciate the beauty of this area.

Camino de los 7 Lagos - Seven Lakes' Road

At this point the road goes into the valleys of lakes Villarino and Falkner, separated from one another by a narrow isthmus. These are two of the most beautiful lakes along the trip. The road allows us to see the lake from above, then it goes down along the isthmus and crosses the river by the same name. At this place we find Lake Villarino’s Inn, a fishers’ inn, which provides varied services according to the season. From this point on there is one km of good places to camp on the Lake Falkner’s side.

The road goes through a wide valley where you will find, at kilometer 141, to your left, the breathtaking Vullignanco cascade. There’s a parking place here, and it is worth making a stop to admire the place. Shortly afterwards you arrive to National Park Lanin’s entrance. It is a wide log arcade which separates both national parks. As far as km 149 the wide valley of Lake Hermoso (Beautiful) opens up in front of the traveller’s eyes. A gendarmerie control regulates the cordilleran paths between Traful and Hua Hum.

We continue our journey…

You go on for another two km from the gendarmerie post and get to Lake Hermoso’s shore, the most beautiful of this journey’s lakes: it is a small lake, surrounded by forest and with a beach that faces west, very sunny and sheltered from the wind . There’s a camping site, a storehouse, some vacational houses and a pathway which goes along the southern side of the lake. The road goes on up to Lake Machonico, where the landscape is drier. As you go on toward San Martín de Los Andes the road slowly goes up along Culebra (Snake) Creek. It is worth sticking out your head to look left as you cross the bridge over Hermoso River, to admire the narrow steep gorge through which the creek flows.

Camino de los 7 Lagos - Seven Lakes' Road

Later on the road goes down the wide Pil Pil river valley, which has been long inhabited by the  mapuche aborigines. A romantic landscape of hills and forest surrounds you.

Close to San Martin de Los Andes, at km 171, there’s a detour that takes you to Ski Center Chapelco . Further on another detour on the left leads to summer cottage Quina Quina. Finally, as you draw near the end of our journey, you see Catritre Beach on the left and the beginning of Lake Lacar southern shore, along which you go on until you get to San Martin de Los Andes, through Costanera Avenue.

Route of the Seven Lakes: The Ultimate One-Day Patagonia Road Trip

08 feb 2024 07 feb 2024 | dan.

In the far north of Argentine Patagonia, the famous Ruta de los Siete Lagos – or Route of the Seven Lakes – traces a winding path through an epic landscape of sweeping, multi-hued forests, towering peaks and serene lakes.

This landscape is a seventh heaven for the outdoor adventurer, but if – like us – time is short and you’d still like to feel the wind in your hair, then this one-day Patagonia road trip out of Bariloche along Argentina’s classic Ruta 40 will give you a tantalising taste of this wild and pristine place.

Epic lake views like this one await on the Route of the Seven Lakes, one of the best things to do in Bariloche.

Route of the Seven Lakes – Snapshot Start: Bariloche, Argentina Finish: Bariloche, Argentina Distance: 380km (235 miles) How long do I need ? This is a one day road trip itinerary. However, there are a number of options for longer trips that incorporate the Ruta de los 7 Lagos over multiple days which we discuss in this post. Overnight stops: There are no overnight stops on this road trip. However, you can extend the journey for a day or two if you have more time, with overnight stops in Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes.

Planning a Route of the Seven Lakes Road Trip

What’s the ruta de los 7 lagos.

Running the length of Argentina in South America is the famous Ruta 40 (Route 40), one of the longest roads in the world. Ruta 40 starts in the very south of Argentina and cuts a path for more than 5,000-kilometres, passing right through Argentine Patagonia before continuing on north to the border with Bolivia.

While that incredible road trip remains on our bucket list for another time, our focus for this day trip is a 108-kilometre section of Ruta 40 in the west of the country called the Route of the Seven Lakes , one of the absolute best things to do in Bariloche.

Touted as one of the most scenic drives in Argentina , the Route of the Seven Lakes is a winding lake-and-mountain road between the pretty lakeside towns of Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes in Argentina’s Lakes District. For this ultimate one-day Patagonia road trip, we’re also adding a stretch of Ruta 40 to include our start and finish point of Bariloche, the region’s largest town and an excellent base for exploring this corner of Argentine Patagonia.

There are a couple of road trip circuit options around the Argentine Lake District that incorporate the Ruta 7 Lagos, and which can be done over several days. With limited time however, our one-day itinerary is a there-and-back route that sticks to the paved highway . We talk about a two-day loop option further on.

The seven lakes of the 7 Lakes Route include lakes Nahuel Huapi, Espejo, Correntoso, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner and Machónico, and we stop at each of them in this one-day itinerary. There are actually many more lakes to be spotted along the way, but who’s counting when the scenery is this spectacular?

How to get to Bariloche

Bariloche is in Argentina’s west, in the foothills of the Andes. It can be reached by plane, car and bus from Buenos Aires and other parts of Argentina or Chile (we bussed in from the far south and bussed out across the border into Chile) and, less easily, by train and boat. Find out more about transport options here .

Best Time to Visit the Argentina Lake District

The Argentina Lake District is a land of four seasons, so no matter when you go, there will be a distinct seasonal tone and colour palette, and all the associated nature-based experiences.

In Summer, the weather is warm and dry, perfect for outdoor pursuits. Autumn is when the leaves turn and the forest colours are at their most eye-popping. Winter brings snow and a beautiful frosty ambience, while Spring sees wildflower blooms in the mountains.

Those in the know say the best time to drive the Road of the Seven Lakes is in Summer and Spring, when the weather is nicer and more predictable.

We were also told that peak periods, holidays and weekends – especially when the weather is good – can mean the difference between a great run from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes, or an unpleasant traffic jam all the way.

Argentina is in the southern hemisphere, so summer is December to January, and winter is mid-year. January, March and November are said to be the busiest months in the region, and prices and traffic will reflect this.

We road tripped on the cusp of the Easter long weekend in April. It was pleasantly cool, the weather was overcast with occasional sun, the colours of the trees were spectacular, and we lucked out with the road practically to ourselves.

Yellow trees line the road of the seven lakes.

Is One Day Enough for the Route of the Seven Lakes?

The national parks and lakes of this region offer enough outdoor distraction to keep you busy for a week, at any time of the year. Both Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes are charming alpine villages where you could base yourself and easily while away a couple of days exploring the surrounds.

So is one day enough to road trip the Ruta de los 7 Lagos out of Bariloche? As day trips go, this one’s an epic: the total there-and-back journey is around 380 kilometres. But we’ve done it and we can attest to the fact that the scenery is so mesmerising, you’ll be stopping every 500 metres anyway. Our tip? Gather your mates and pool your driving resources  so you can share the load.

With two days, you could slow the pace, break up the journey with a night in San Martín de los Andes (or camp somewhere along the route), and then return to Bariloche via the unpaved Ruta 65 on Day Two.

If a single day is all you have though, then this one-day itinerary will ensure you see all the highlights of the route – including all seven lakes – and still have time for a pint at the pub in San Martín before making the return journey.

A sign showcases the lakes and highlights along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos.

Driving the Route of the Seven Lakes

Hiring a car is straightforward in Bariloche and can usually be organised with assistance from your hotel, or in advance through Rental Cars or Discover Cars . Check rates on both to find the best deal you can. Remember, Argentinians drive on the right side of the road.

There’s conflicting information about whether you need an International Driver’s Licence to hire a car in Argentina, with most car hire outlets saying you do. We both carried one, but on the day, we were only asked for our Australian licences and passports. Research the requirements for your nationality before going, but if in doubt, get an International Drivers Licence just in case.

There are petrol stations along the 7 Lakes Drive in Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes, and also on Ruta 65, but to be on the safe side, leave Bariloche with a full tank.

There have been reports on TripAdvisor of car break-ins in some of the more secluded spots and trail heads on the roads around this region. Don’t leave any valuables in your car, and keep everything out of sight.

What to take

Even when the weather is good, it pays to be ready for anything, especially if you’re planning on getting off the busier Ruta 40. Take water, snacks, rain gear, warm clothes, good walking shoes, as well as swimming gear and towels in the warmer months, if you think you might like a dip in the waters of the lakes.

Route of the Seven Lakes Itinerary

Stage 1: bariloche to villa la angostura.

This stretch is 82-kilometres. Google Maps says it takes an hour and a quarter with a good run; we say give it up to 2 hours to factor in stops along the way.

Set out early from Bariloche, heading east along Ruta 40. The time of year you’re travelling will dictate the hours of daylight you have to play with. In April, we had around 11 hours of light, with sunrise a little after 8am. That gave us time to grab some breakfast and then head out to catch the sunrise before setting off in the car.

Soon enough you’ll leave town behind, driving alongside Lake Nahuel Huapi  (our first ‘official’ lake) with views back across to Bariloche and its jaw-dropping backdrop of peaks and forest.

Over the next hour-and-a-half or so, you’ll find plenty of photo-worthy moments to stop for. The scenery here, all of it within Nahuel Huapi National Park, is breathtaking.

The Ruta 40 scenery out of Bariloche offers up lakes, trees and mountains on the 7 Lakes Drive.

Our first major stop is Villa La Angostura , a small resort town channelling Europe’s alpine villages with wooden buildings, a woodland backdrop and winter ski fields nearby. Enjoy a wander and eyeball the goodies in the chocolate shops that line the main strip, a part of town known as El Cruce.

We stop for about an hour here, with a welcome coffee break. We also pick up some empanadas to-go, to keep us snack-happy on the next leg.

Two-Day Option: Dwell in Villa La Angostura a little longer and head down to the lakeside area called La Villa. In summertime, boats leave from here for lake cruises. There are also short walks in nearby Los Arrayanes National Park.

Stage 2: Villa La Angostura to San Martín de los Andes

This leg is 108 kilometres. Google Maps does it in 1 hour and 40 minutes, but we’ve got lots of stops so don’t rush, give it more like 3 hours.

Strap yourself in: Villa la Angostura is the gateway to the Route of the Seven Lakes itself and while the views have been knock-out up till now, they’re about to get even better.

Back on Ruta 40, head north-west out of Villa La Angostura. You’ll soon pass over the Correntoso River , which links Lake Nahuel Huapi with Lake Correntoso.

We’ll meet Lake Correntoso properly in a little while so keep going until you see the sign for the Mirador Inalco on the left. Swing past and do a u-turn when it’s ok to do so, or stop by here on your way back; the views out over Lake Nahuel Huapi give rise to one the region’s more infamous legends.

The Dark Secrets of The Lakes District Did Hitler escape to Patagonia and live out his days in a bolthole on the banks of Lake Nahuel Huapi? Some conspiracy theorists think so. The Argentine Lake District, with its alpine landscapes and European-flavoured villages reminiscent of Bavaria, is believed to have attracted many fleeing Nazis in the years after World War II, with Bariloche becoming a haven for fugitives like Erich Priebke. He lived a comfortable life in the town for nearly fifty years before being found and extradited to Italy to face charges for war crimes as a captain in the Nazi SS.   That story is real, but there’s another dark legend that’s been doing the rounds here for decades. Just north of Villa La Angostura, on the shores of Nahuel Huapi, a wooden chalet is said to have been the refuge of Hitler and Eva Braun, smuggled there from Germany to live out the rest of their days together in secret. Inalco House isn’t on any tour itinerary, but as you take in the view from the Mirador Inalco, the rumour makes for somber contemplation.

Heading north once more, you’ll reach the turn-off to Osorno in Chile. Fight the urge to turn left for a quick hop across the border, and instead head to the right and continue on Ruta 40.

You’ll soon catch sight of Lake Espejo , the second of our seven lakes. Espejo means ‘mirror’, for good reason if you’re there on a still day. There are several viewpoints along the way; we recommend stopping when you see the turn-off for ‘Beach and Camping Agreste Lago Espejo’, the scenery from the beach is stunning, even on a cloudy day.

Two-Day Option: On the opposite side of the road to the beach, there’s a trail to Lake Correntoso. If you feel like getting out into the surrounding nature, set aside an hour or so to walk the path to the lake and back.

A boat looks small against the mountain backdrop of Lake Espejo on the Seven Lakes Route.

Back on Ruta 40, continue heading north. You’ll soon curve around to the right and travel for a while with Lake Correntoso on your right hand side. There’s a good viewpoint along here for taking in the scenery of our third lake, the waters of which are fed by the snowmelt of the mountains lining the shore.

Peaks rise above the waters of Lake Correntoso on the Road of the Seven Lakes.

Two-Day Option: Not long after curving back north on Ruta 40, you’ll pass the Ruta 65 turn-off on the right; this is the loop road back to Bariloche that you might consider taking on the return trip tomorrow. We’ll touch on this option further on.

The next long stretch of road is a beautiful, serene run through the forested mountainscape of Nahuel Huapi National Park. Take a break when you spy the viewpoint for Lake Escondido , our fourth lake of the seven, and the smallest.

Just over the hill is Lake Villarino , lake number five, a popular spot for trout fishing. Snap a few pics here and then head on up the road, past Lake Falkner (lake six), but don’t stop, we’re going to save that one for our return journey.

A tree-framed view of Lago Villarino, a classic scene on the Ruta 7 Lagos in the Argentina Lake District.

Continue on until you reach the sign for the Cascada Vulliñanco . There are several waterfalls along the Seven Lakes Route, but this one is visible from a viewpoint on the highway. When we visit in Autumn, the waterfall cuts through rocks surrounded by a multihued scene of reds, oranges, greens, yellows and browns. It’s a peaceful picture worth lingering over.

The Vulliñanco Waterfall is visible from the side of the road on the Ruta 40.

You’ll definitely be ready for a break by this stage, so push on past our final body of water, Lake Machónico (don’t worry, we’ll visit this one later today too), to San Martín de los Andes, the pretty, northernmost town on the Seven Lakes Route.

Want Patagonian glaciers?  Read about our  trip to the spectacular Perito Moreno glacier , a day and night’s bus journey south of Bariloche.

Surrounded by mountains, forest and yes, another lake – this one called Lake Lácar – San Martín de los Andes is a hub for outdoor adventure, with Lanín National Park offering warmer weather hiking, as well as kayaking and boating options on the lake, and the ski fields of nearby Cerro Chapelco drawing snow sports enthusiasts in the wintertime.

Stretch your legs exploring the heart of this lovely town, with its mountain backdrop, before finding a spot to either grab something to eat or, as we did, an afternoon beverage at a local pub like the Dublin South (no matter where you are in the world, there’s an Irish pub). Give yourself about an hour in San Martín; we’ve got a big return journey ahead of us.

Two-Day Option: If you’ve decided to take two days to road trip from Bariloche to San Martín de los Andes and back, this is the perfect spot to wrap up your first day of driving; there are plenty of eating and sleeping options here.

Where to Stay in San Martín de los Andes

As a popular tourist destination and the gateway to Lanín National Park and a host of outdoor activities, San Martín de los Andes boasts a great range of accommodation. The following options get consistently good reviews:

  • Good value: Tunqueley Hotel – friendly staff | great breakfast | free private parking | central
  • Mid-range: Patagonia Plaza Hotel – central | comfy modern rooms | indoor pool | private and street parking
  • Indulge: Amonite Apart & Spa – central and near Lake Lácar | pool and jacuzzi | comfy rooms | street parking

Stage 3 (Return): San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura

Time to head back to Bariloche. We’ve got less stops between here and Villa La Angostura this time, so aim for around 2 hours.

Our preference is usually for road trip circuits rather than ‘there-and-back’ journeys. What we loved about this road trip was that, despite backtracking, the constantly changing scenery, along with the fact we were seeing the mountainous landscape from the other direction, and stopping at places we hadn’t stopped on the way up, meant we never felt like we were covering old ground. We were still craning our necks, pulling over for pics, and wow-ing all the way back to Bariloche.

We kick off our return journey with a stop around 20-kilometres south of town at an understated site with a unique claim to fame.

At first glance, the Arroyo Partido is just a trickling creek that splits into two and cuts through the woods. Unlike normal creeks though, these two never meet again, but instead go on to deposit their waters into two different oceans – one via Lake Lácar to the Pacific, and the other via Lake Meliquina to the Atlantic. From small things, big things grow!

The streams of the Arroyo Partido on the Route of the Seven Lakes.

Once you’ve contemplated the unusual nature of the Arroyo Partido, get back on the road until you reach the viewpoint over Lake Machónico . This is our seventh lake, and it gets its name from an Indigenous Mapuche word that refers to the fresh-water crabs inhabiting these waters.

Lake Machonico on the 7 Lakes Route is surrounded by colour in the Fall.

In the car, set the odometer to zero and keep an eye out; around 2.5-3 kilometres south of the Lake Machónico viewpoint, we’ll be taking a detour off Ruta 40 for a quick visit to Lake Hermoso . You’re looking for an unsigned dirt track on the right, so blink and you may miss it, but don’t worry if you do, there’s another turn off around 1.5km further down the road.

Once on the dirt track, you’ll travel for around five minutes until you reach the appropriately named Lago Hermoso, which translates as Lake Beautiful. This isn’t on the official Seven Lakes list, but it’s a worthy side trip. Pull up a pew on the wooden pier and take in the Patagonian beauty of the picture-perfect lake and surrounding Lanín National Park.

Two sit on a pier jutting out into Lake Hermoso on the Ruta de los 7 Lagos.

Back on Ruta 40, cruise on south until you come to Lake Falkner on the left. Lake six of the seven offers a sandy beach with a reeds-and-mountains backdrop. The distinctly English name of the lake is a dedication to an eighteenth century Jesuit missionary who never actually visited this area, but is famous for his studies of the people and environments of Patagonia.

The sandy beach of Lake Falkner on the Ruta 7 Lagos.

From here, it’s a good one hour drive back to Villa La Angostura, so settle in and enjoy the late afternoon light on the trees and mountains.

Two-Day Option: If you’re taking two days to do this trip, this next leg is where you’ll branch off from Ruta 40 on Day Two and complete the loop route back to Bariloche along Ruta 65.  You’ll find the left-hand turn-off around 25-kilometres south of the Lago Villarino viewpoint. Ruta 65 is a 60-kilometre stretch of unpaved road, so the going is much slower (this is the reason we don’t take it on the one-day trip), but by all accounts the scenery is stunning, plus there’s much less traffic than on the Route of the Seven Lakes. When you reach the junction with Route 237, turn right and the road will eventually link up with Ruta 40 back to Bariloche.

Stage 4 (Return): Villa La Angostura to Bariloche

The final leg is 82-kilometres. We’re on the home run now; factor in around 1 to 1.5 hours.

If you feel like another reviver stop in Villa La Angostura, take the opportunity; it’s another hour or so back to Bariloche. Depending on the time of year, you may be making this last leg in the dark so take care on the final stretch.

Otherwise, enjoy the last light of the day on the winding route back to town, and revel in the highs of a Patagonia road trip to remember!

Thanks for this! So helpful. Can’t wait for tomorrow now!

Hey Seb and Georgia, thanks for your message! We’d love to know how the trip went?

Happy travels! Dan & John

Hello, great blog, thank you. A quick question re type of car. Is an SUV required, or are the roads good? I note you said, there is a route back along Ruta 65 which is unpaved. Thank you, Matthew

Hi Matthew, thanks for your message! We did this trip in a small rental sedan with no issues. The Ruta 40 between Bariloche and San Martin de Los Andes is paved and in fair condition. While we can’t personally speak to the conditions on the unpaved Ruta 65 detour, we’ve heard plenty of reports of people driving it in a regular car; it just takes a lot longer than expected as the driving is slower going and more cautious. Sounds like the scenery is worth it though! Just be sure to check your rental car t&c’s. Have an awesome time and happy travels! ~ Dan & John

Headed to Bariloche in December. Was unsure about completing this drive in one day, but your post was so helpful! Thank you!

best places to stay along the drive of lakes district for March this year

Hi Judy, we were based in Bariloche and did the Seven Lakes drive over one day, so we can’t personally attest to accommodation along the drive. Having said that, there are various stays sprinkled along the way, with the majority of accommodation clustered in and around the towns of Villa La Angostura and San Martin de los Andes. Definitely worth doing a top 10 search in those areas and also seeing what people are saying on TripAdvisor. If you’re planning on visiting around the Easter holidays, we would highly recommend booking your accomm well ahead. All the best for your planning and wishing you a wonderful time on your trip!

Thank you very much for the valuable information, we are flying to Bariloche in March. with your information for sure we make sure to make all stops you mentioned. Thank.

Patagonia is a huge, diverse wilderness encompassing 300,000 square miles of southern Argentina and the Seven Lakes Road to one of the country’s most scenic road trips.

It is best enjoyed by private car , giving travelers the freedom to explore the beautiful post-glacial valleys, pristine waters and rugged trekking of national parks, Lanín and Nahuel Huapi, both which are covered on the journey.

The route mapped in this article runs north to south, connecting popular tourist towns of the region, San Martín de los Andes with Villa La Angostura via Route National 40, 234 and 231.

The most direct route is 108km, which does not include the diversion to Villa Traful.

Also known as the ‘ Circuito Grande ‘ or ‘Big Circuit,’ the Seven Lakes Route can also be done south to north, starting in Bariloche .

There are more than seven lakes in the region but the principal Patagonian lakes which run roadside to RN234 for which this trip is names for are:

Lago Machónico

Lago falkner, lago villarino.

  • Lago Espejo
  • Lago Correntoso
  • Lago Nahuel Huapi

San Martín de los Andes

Nestled between the clear lake shore of Lago Lácar and a mountainous backdrop, San Martín de los Andes is a small but bustling alpine town, well equipped for those seeking adventure in the wild surrounds or simply looking for lakeside rest and relaxation.

It is possible to arrange car hire in San Martín de los Andes and two large service stations are also located here for refueling and vehicle maintenance.

San Martín accommodation options are plentiful, from the popular and well-located camp ground on Route National 234 – which runs through town — to four-star hotels.

A short drive from the town center, Rucaleufu Cabins is an excellent mid-range option.

These rustic cabins are found amidst a beautiful forest setting.

A creek runs right through the grounds and the super helpful staff even prepare a delicious asado (barbecue) onsite for visitors each Friday night.

For those starting the drive early, the cozy Pasteleria Pan y Chocolate is well worth a visit.

While most of the town is still sleeping, Pan y Chocolate serves up coffee and all the sustenance required before hitting the road, including piping hot egg and pancetta ( bacon) English muffins, fresh medialunas and scones with cream.

Beginning the Seven Lakes Journey

The drive begins alongside Lago Lácar in San Martín de los Andes, following RN234 and winds up the mountainside.

Stop at Pil Pil mirador, 5km along, to snap some photos taking in the panoramic view of Lago Lácar and San Martín de los Andes.

While on most of this route drivers need to be aware of wildlife on the road, here the person at the wheel will also want to be careful of runners, pounding the roadside close to vehicles while using headphones.

Thirty-one km from San Martín de los Andes you’ll reach Lago Machónico. The wide mirador (lookout point) where is another opportunity to appreciate the deep blue waters of the lake from above.

A wooden dock at Lago Hermoso, Patagonia Argentina

Lago Hermoso

Six km further along RN234 take the detour to the right for Lago Hermoso, another 4km along unpaved road off the RN234.

Largo Hermoso’s pebbly shoreline along crystal waters makes it perfect for kayaking, a popular activity here. For those not equipped with their own, kayak tours of the lake are possible.

Activity arrangements should be made prior to arrival.

After returning from Lago Hermosa to RN234, the next stop is Lago Falkner, 13km south.

Reaching Largo Faulker, you’ve crossed the boundary from Lanin National Park and entered Nahuel Huapi National Park.

For camping enthusiasts, Largo Falkner is a well-equipped place to pitch a tent or park a campervan. Organized campsites have access to bathrooms, hot water, fire pits, tables and benches.

The 20-meter waterfall, Cascada Vullignanco, can be seen from the roadside just before Lago Falkner and visitors can safely pull over to the side of the road here for a closer view and photo opportunity.

A little further along RN234 lies Lago Falkner’s smaller neighbor, Lago Villarino.

The lake is a hot spot for fishing enthusiasts but before casting a line out, ensure permits are in order.

These can be obtained from tourist offices, YPF stations or campsites.

Lago Traful and Villa Traful

Wild horses dash across the road on the Seven Lake Route in Patagonia, Argentina

Continuing south-west on RN234, after about three km the Seven Lake’s Route’s ‘eighth lake,’ the appropriately named Lago Escondido (Hidden Lake) is spotted off to the right.

Onward another 25km, take the left turn off for Lago Traful on RP65.

Follow RP65 along the lakeshore another 22km to arrive at the small and simple town of Villa Traful on Lake Traful.

The town is a peaceful choice for an overnight stay and Villa Traful accommodation options range from hotels to abundant campsites.

Activities here include the Mirador del Viento, providing a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding hills.

A tour of Bosque Sumergido is also popular option, a forest of between 50 and 60 specimens of cypress submerged 30 meters below the surface of Lago Traful.

Lago Espejo Chico

From Lago Traful, head west via RP65 for 22km, take left turn back onto RN234 and travel a further 8km along to reach Lago Espejo Chico.

On this route, out the window to the left, the clear waters of Largo Correntoso run alongside the road.

The beach inlet of Lago Espejo Chico closest to the R234 is the perfect place to stop for a spot of sunbathing.

For those keen to take in the atmosphere a little longer, affordable camping at Lago Espejo Chico includes showers, hot water, fire pits, and picnic tables. A cafe can also be found onsite.

Lago Correntoso and Lago Nahuel Huapi

Leaving Lago Espejo Chico, turn right back onto RN234, traveling for another 28km to cross over the stunning Lago Correntoso.

A sign advertising kayak rental on Lake Nahuel Huapi in Patagonia, Argentina

From this point, you can take the turnoff to the left leading to the beach and volcanic sands of Lake Correntoso.

Camping facilities are available at the lake and for those keen on outdoor adventure, water sports including kayaking and canoeing are possible.

The surprisingly short, surging Rio Correntoso, reaches a maximum of only 300 meters depending on lake height and connects Lago Correntoso to its immense neighbor, Lago Nahuel Huapi.

Built in the early 1900s and once the hub of La Angostura, iconic Correntoso Lake and River Hotel is today still serving Patagonian visitors and sits above the river on the Nahuel Huapi side, offering one of the finest vistas in Northern Patagonia.

Villa La Angostura

The final destination on the Seven Lakes Route is Villa La Angostura, situated on the northwest shore of Nahuel Huapi along RN231.

The town, named ‘ angostura ‘ (meaning ‘narrow pass’) after the type of narrow land upon which it sits.

People in kayaks enjoy Nahuel Huapi Lake in Patagonia, Argentina

Like Bariloche , it was developed in the 1930’s to encourage tourism to the region.

Villa La Angostura is a thriving tourist hub and for outdoor adventurers, the ideal place to call home for a few nights while exploring the area.

Boat, canoe or kayak the seemingly endless shores of Nahuel Huapi, visit the one of a kind Arrayanes Forest, home to 650-year-old Arrayán trees up or trek through Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes.

Villa La Angostura also boasts some of the most upmarket resorts of the lakes region, an outstanding microbrewery, Australis Cervecería Artesanal and numerous gastronomic options.

Restaurants include the popular Cook Pizza Menu for affordable pizza and empanadas .

Mirador Social Club is for those looking to splash some cash in order to enjoy an amazing view.

Arrive just before sunset and watch the sun dip below the lake with a glass of Argentine-made wine in hand — the perfect end to Patagonia’s most unforgettable scenic road trip.

What Is the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina?

The Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina is a famous route located far north of Argentina. Some tourists also know this route as the “Route of the Seven Lakes.” Contrary to its name, the route spans not just 7 lakes but around 40. However, the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina got its name for covering the largest lakes.

The route is a winding path through an epic landscape, including multi-hued forests, serene lakes, and sweeping and towering peaks. The Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina takes travelers to some of the country’s most beautiful sights, highlighting its unique geographical features, such as tranquil lakes, ancient forests, pristine national parks, and snow-capped volcanoes.

To get to Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina, you have to proceed to San Martin de Los Andes or Bariloche . San Martin is a wonderful town that serves as this trip’s starting point until it reaches Bariloche, the endpoint. The distance of this route is over 124 miles (200 kilometers).

Conversely, if you start your journey in Bariloche, the route will end for you in San Martin.

Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Trip

The lakes you will see on the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos, Argentina, include:

1. Correntoso Lake

Bridge At Correntoso Lake In Villa La Angostura, Patagonia, Argentina

We can’t even begin to explain the beauty of Lake Correntoso, as the mountains around it greatly increase the scene’s beauty. Lake Correntoso runs vast and has many beaches and bays to stop and enjoy the view.

2. Escondido Lake

View of Lago Escondido Hidden Lake at Circuito Chico Bariloche Argentina Patagonia

The smallest of the 7 lakes along this renowned route, Lago Escondido, translates to ‘hidden lake.’ Its mesmerizing turquoise color showcases a captivating view that can transform one’s perception of lakes.

3. Espejo Lake

Lake Espejo has become a tourist attraction for having the warmest water out of all the lakes on the route, making it an ideal stop if you take the trip in the summer.

The lake takes its name (mirror) from its calm and clean waters, which beautifully reflect the landscape.

4. Villarino Lake

Lakes Villarino and Falkner lay side by side. However, Lake Villarino is ideal for people who love fishing and want to enjoy the quiet with fewer crowds.

5. Falkner Lake

Falkner Lake Near Nahuel Huapi National Park Argentina Patagonia

Lake Falkner offers a sandy beach with a beautiful scenic view, including the mountains. Its water levels border the road, giving you a beautiful view and a wonderful landscape with Patagonian woods adding more life to the scenery.

6. Machonico Lake

Lake Machonico has glacial origins, and the surrounding mountains and forests combine with this lake to complete an amazing landscape and give it a special charm. It’s at least 18.6 miles (30 kilometers) from San Martin and has one of the most beautiful scenes on the route.

The view from the lake’s beach looks even more beautiful and adds value to the trip.

7. Lake Lacar

Lacar Lake Near San Martin De Los Andes Argentina Patagonia

Lake Lacar has always been a favorite site for guests and San Martin de Los Andes locals. It has fabulous views and is a perfect place to conclude the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina tour for travelers starting from Bariloche.

In the traditional language, the name of this lake means “Crumbled Cliffs.”

How to Travel the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos

Planning how you will travel before taking the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina trip is very important.

There are 3 excellent ways of traveling on this route:

  • By Car

Taking a car is the best way to explore and make the most of your Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina trip.

It is a great way to enjoy scenic views, make pit stops, and set your journey. However, if you can’t bring your car to the trip, you can also consider making car rentals from Bariloche or any nearby towns, depending on where you start your journey. However, the rentals usually get booked from February to December, so it would be best to call beforehand and book a rental.

You can still get a car from Bariloche if you forget to book one. This option is cheaper than in San Martin de Los Andes, and the rental companies will likely allow you to make last-minute bookings.

  • By Bus

You can also take a bus to travel the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina, but it will be less advantageous. The buses won’t make any stops and just will take you directly from 1 city to another. If you get a window seat, you can live in the moment when going through the route and see the lakes while in motion.

Since traveling by bus won’t allow you to stop and take photos whenever you want, think twice about taking a bus for your Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina trip.

  • Take a Tour

If traveling alone is not your cup of tea and you would rather have a guided tour of the entire trip, you should book a tour.

Many services offer a full-day tour of Argentina’s Ruta de Los 7 Lagos. These tours will include a round trip from Bariloche and will stop at all of the 7 main lakes on the route, allowing you to briefly stop at every place and do more sightseeing.

How Long Will the 7 Lakes Route Take?

Going through the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina is a process consisting of 2 steps.

First, you will go from Bariloche to Villa La Angostura; the distance between them is 51 mi (82 km). According to Google Maps, the route should take an hour and a quarter. However, Google hasn’t factored in the beautiful views on the way and the stops you may opt to make. Covering this stage with very minimal stops should take 2 hours at best.

Second, the next journey takes you from Villa La Angostura to San Martín de Los Andes. The distance between these 2 locations is 67 mi (108 km). The route should only take 1 hour and 40 minutes. But again, that isn’t factoring in the views on the route, so with a couple of stops. This route is 3 hours long.

In short, covering the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina may take about 5 hours. Allot a couple of additional hours for the drive back. As stated, that would only cover the travel time and a minimum of stops, sightseeing, and picture-taking.

Considering that the Ruta de Los Lagos offers one of the most scenic views in Patagonia , it’s best to plan your stops and allot a longer time.

Best Time to Make a Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Trip

Taking the Ruta de Los 7 Lagos Argentina at any season will present Patagonian at its best. Regardless of where you go, the area offers a distinct seasonal tone and a matching color palette, making all your nature-based experiences memorable.

If you want to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, or kayaking, the best time to visit would be during the summer months of December to February, when the weather is warmer and drier. However, this is also the busiest time of the year, and accommodations may be more expensive and harder to find.

If you prefer to avoid crowds and tolerate cooler temperatures, then the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) or fall (March to May) could be a good time to visit. During these months, you can still enjoy outdoor activities, and the landscapes are beautiful with autumn colors or spring blossoms. However, it’s important to note that some roads or hiking trails may be closed due to snow or weather conditions.

Winter (June to August) can be a beautiful time to visit if you enjoy winter sports, such as skiing or snowboarding, but it’s important to note that some of the lakes and roads may be frozen or inaccessible during this time.

Overall, the best time to make a Ruta de Los 7 Lagos trip would depend on your interests and what you want to experience during your visit.

The best route to go on a tour of the 7 Lakes by car

Bariloche and the Lake District are part of a destination with a myriad of attractions; its exquisite chocolates, the magnificence of its mountains and the warmth of its people make this place well worth visiting. And that´s not all: combine this with the diverse sceneries offered by each season and one single visit will almost certainly not be enough.

Destinations

Sept 17th, 2021

O ne of the highlights in this area is the well-known “ Seven Lakes Route ”, an absolutely stunning itinerary that covers some 200 km between Bariloche and San Martín de los Andes. One stretch of this tour features a visit to two picturesque villages: Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes. Along with the lakes, these two locations offer travelers much more than an “energy-recharging point”; and even when the tour may be taken on an “intensive” day, we do recommend that you take your time and do it at your own pace. You won’t regret it.

The journey – by car – will start from Bariloche , all by yourself and at your own pace. Remember that in AOTG we will guide you and advise you on the best logistics for this adventure, according to the characteristics and recommendations for each season.

Villa La Angostura

The Seven Lakes

Lake Correntoso, Lake Espejo, Lake Escondido, Lake Villarino, Lake Falkner, Lake Machónico and Lake Lácar are the seven protagonists in this article today. And while there are 7 of these lakes along the route, you may get to see many more on this tour and feel amazed at the sight of other wonders in this charming corner of Patagonia.

Lake Correntoso

With the extraordinary mountain range in this area, the vastness of the lake and the great number of bays and beaches around Lake Correntoso we set off on the tour of the Seven Lakes. Not without warning you that this starting point is based in one of the most enchanting cities in Patagonia: Villa La Angostura.

Lake Escondido

Both its turquoise color and the “effort” you may need to make to be able to see its beauty explain its name. The charm of this place doesn´t go unnoticed, and it will surely remind you how diverse each lake is.

tour 7 lagos bariloche

Lake Espejo

This Lake has the warmest water of all the lakes in the area, which makes it one of the most popular with visitors in summertime. Its name is closely related to the phenomenon in this location. This body of water reflects, in an exceptional way, the surrounding mountains, which naturally explains why this is one of the most appealing and most photographed spots. The sun doesn´t set until late, which enables travelers to appreciate the most fascinating “postcard” sceneries.

tour 7 lagos bariloche

Lake Villarino and Lake Falkner

In this site you will find yourself face to face with two completely different versions. One of the things you will become aware of as you move on in this journey is that each lake has its own “frame”, landscapes and characteristics. Diverse and magnificent per se. On one side of the road lies Lake Villarino, on the other, Lake Falkner. The former is ideal for those who love fishing or would rather spend a more peaceful time.

The latter does not lack peacefulness. Yet, you are bound to find a quite different landscape: the Patagonian woods will simply take your breath away. The qualities of the environment offer travelers protection from the wind, thus making its beaches the most visited in the area.

Lake Villarino was named after the Spanish explorer and sailor Basilio Villarino, while Lake Falkner´s name pays tribute to the Jesuit priest Tomás Falkner.

tour 7 lagos bariloche

Lake Falkner

Lake Machónico

Like most of the lakes in Patagonia Lake Machónico is of glacial origin. The surrounding mountains and woods give the landscape a special charm. Located 30 km away from San Martín de los Andes, this body of water may be taken in from one of the viewpoints and/or on the way to its beach. The name of its tributary- River Hermoso – pretty much says it all.

The name of the lake derives from the Mapuche language and it means “Lake of Shrimps”, or “The Crab´s Place”

tour 7 lagos bariloche

Lake Lácar welcomes both visitors and the locals from San Martín de los Andes. This is one fabulous scene to complete our tour of the Seven Lakes. The contrast between the city and the vastness of the lake- which sits within Lanín National Park- will definitely leave you speechless. It can be accessed throughout the year and it features several bays, beaches and cliffs, along with many resorts such as Quila Quina, Yuco or Catritre.

Its name comes from the traditional Mapudungun language and it might mean “Dead Shaman or Sorcerer” or “Crumbled Cliffs”.

• Keep within reach the map with the different points well marked, especially the viewpoints and places to park your car during your stops. • Carry some snacks to help you renew your energy on the road before you reach your final destination. • Make sure you don´t leave trash or your personal belongings behind whenever you stop for some pictures or for a brief rest. • Find out the road conditions before you choose your vehicle, particularly in winter time. • Put your personal belongings in the trunk when you get out of the car to appreciate the landscape. • Drinking water throughout the journey is vital, and so is the use of sunblock and sunglasses. • Spend reasonable time on each stop. It´s worthwhile. • Carry some cash with you. Many sites do not take credit or debit cards. • Gas! To avoid setbacks, stop and refuel in the two main cities on the road.

Pearl on the Road

This pearl on the road is the icing on the cake, the grand finale of this exceptional adventure. After completing the Seven Lakes Route tour, and on the way back to Bariloche, we suggest you do so along Route 65, so you may enjoy a special visit to Villa Traful, which is hardly ever visited by travelers, most of whom restrict the tour to the lakes recommended on the list in this article. However, this town is a real paradise worth visiting and spending time in. Villa Traful is home not only to one of the most amazing viewpoints in the area, but also to a submerged forest and a lake surrounded by a stunning natural scenery where visitors may engage in a number of nautical activities and tours. Further ahead on routes 65 and 237 you will come across River Limay and its Valle Encantado: Patagonian treasures that are well worth your stopping to appreciate. Indulge in the contemplation of this breathtaking landscape to close an extraordinary nature-laden adventure.

Villa Traful y Valle Encantado

¿Where to eat

Ñancu lahuen restaurant.

If you decide to stop by Villa Traful, this is the place. Its menu features traditional dishes from the region, as well as cakes and other traditional Argentine dishes. The sorrentinos is one big favorite among visitors.

El Esquiador Restaurant

In spite of the wide range of eateries in Villa La Angostura, this is one of the most frequently chosen. Even more surprising is the fact that many of those who have been to this place before still prefer to stop by this restaurant again rather than any other where they might taste new dishes. Trout, chicken, pasta and barbecue are the most prized options on the menu in this establishment, where visitors will be offered an outstanding service along with mouth-watering and hearty dishes.

The best eatery in San Martin de los Andes if you wish to savor seafood or paella. Indeed, the local flavors in combination with these foods make of Ulises one big favorite among locals and tourists.

Ruta de los 7 Lagos: How to Drive, Bike or Tour Argentina’s Lake District in 2024

Photo of author

Looking for a guide to visiting the Ruta de los Siete Lagos in Argentina? Here, I share my tips for the 7 Lakes Route, including how you can drive, tour and even bike this stunning route!

There are many spectacular things to do in Argentina , but the trips that I remember most from my time living in Argentina are the ones that involve road trips.

And in Neuquén province in northern Patagonia, you’ll find one of the best road trips in Argentina : the Ruta de los Siete Lagos.

This stunning 110-kilometre scenic route (in English, it’s the Road of the Seven Lakes ) winds through – you guessed it – seven lakes, each a shade of teal or turquoise that have to be seen to be believed.

If you’re planning to visit Argentina, this is an area you should definitely put on your Argentina itinerary . The great thing is that there are multiple ways to traverse La Ruta de los 7 Lagos and I’m going to show you how to do each one.

A vibrant landscape featuring a deep blue lake, surrounded by dense forests with a smattering of red-orange trees and backed by mountains under a clear blue sky. The Ruta de los 7 Lagos - or Road of the Seven Lakes - in Argentina is a spectacular road trip.

This blog post may contain affiliate links, meaning if you book or buy something through one of these links, I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you).

What's in this article (Click to view)

What is the Ruta de los Siete Lagos?

The Ruta de los Siete Lagos connects the two towns of Villa la Angostura (near Bariloche, a popular town year-round) and San Martin de los Andes . You can either  take the route from north to south (from San Martin de los Andes to Villa la Angostura) or south to north.

We did the route from south to north because we had based ourselves in the larger town of Bariloche.

The Camino de los Siete Lagos is on Argentina’s famous Ruta Nacional 40 , a highway that traverses the length of the country (it’s a dream of mine to drive the whole thing one day!). The 7 Lagos Route is a two-way, paved highway which is in good condition. Some of the lakes can only be reached by dirt roads that shoot off the main highway, but we found these to be in pretty good condition, with compacted roads – just watch the potholes.

A curving road marked with a yellow and black sharp turn sign, bordered by flowering purple lupines and green trees, with mountains in the distance and a cloudy sky. The Ruta de los Siete Lagos is on a paved road so is easy to drive or bike.

The 7 lakes

The name of the route is actually a misnomer. There are more than seven lakes to see along the route.

I did plenty of research to try to figure out which are the “official” seven lakes, but every source listed different lakes! Instead, here are the lakes that you’ll see along the way, listed from north to south:

  • Lago Machónico
  • Lago Meliquina
  • Lago Pudú Pudú
  • Lago Hermoso
  • Lago Villarino
  • Lago Falkner
  • Lago Escondido
  • Lago Traful
  • Lago Correntoso
  • Lago Espejo Chico
  • Lago Espejo Grande
  • Lago Nahuel Huapi

In my opinion, it doesn’t matter which are the official lakes and which aren’t. They’re all gorgeous and you’ll enjoy this trip along the Seven Lakes Road regardless!

When to visit the Ruta de los 7 Lagos

The best time to visit the Ruta de los Siete Lagos is in summer or spring (remember, that’s southern hemisphere summer and spring, so from September to February).

In summer, you’ll find the warmest weather, which means sunny days and the chance of taking a dip in one or two of the most beautiful lakes in Argentina. Camping sites are open, as are the stores along the route that sell food and supplies.

We visited in spring and had mostly good weather, although there was one day where a light shower turned into a full day of fairly heavy downpour. The lake water was also definitely too cold to even dip a toe in! Some campsites may not yet be open. It’s worth it during this season – the colourful flowers are so beautiful!

If you’re set on visiting in winter, you’ll need to be prepared for snow and extremely cold weather.

How to visit the Ruta de los Siete Lagos

There are three ways you can traverse the Ruta de los Siete Lagos:

  • By guided tour

I guess there’s also a fourth way: hitchhiking! I’ve never hitchhiked before, though, so I have no tips or experience to offer here. What I can say is that the Ruta de los Siete Lagos gets a lot of traffic, so I imagine it wouldn’t be too difficult to get a ride. Argentines are also super friendly so I’m sure you’d meet some fun people!

Before we get into more details about the three ways I recommend visiting the 7 Lakes Route, let’s talk about how you actually get there.

A cyclist (the author's husband) on a dirt road with arms raised in joy, facing away from the camera. Lush greenery surrounds the road, with a mountain in the distance under a clear blue sky. Biking is a great way to visit the 7 Lakes Route in Argentina.

How to get to the Ruta de 7 Lagos

Depending where you’re starting or what else you plan to do while you’re in the region, fly into either Bariloche (officially San Carlos de Bariloche) or San Martin de los Andes. You can also fly into one town and out the other.

Bariloche is the larger of the two towns , and there are plenty of things to do there to keep you busy before and after your meander along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos. Aerolíneas Argentinas flies to Bariloche daily. | Search for flights from Buenos Aires to Bariloche on Skyscanner

Buses from Buenos Aires to Bariloche take around 20 hours. You can then take a bus to Villa la Angostura, which takes 1 hour, or rent a car while you’re here.

Aerolíneas Argentinas flies daily to San Martin de los Andes . San Martin is a smaller version of Bariloche and is a wonderful place to wander around. | Search for flights from Buenos Aires to San Martin de los Andes on Skyscanner

It’s a 20+ hour bus ride from Buenos Aires to San Martin de los Andes.

A view of a timber two-story house in an alpine style, with large windows and a gabled roof. The house is set against a backdrop of trees and a blue sky with scattered clouds. San Martin de los Andes in Argentina is a cute town to base yourself in to visit the 7 Lakes Route.

Driving the Ruta de los Siete Lagos

The quickest and easiest way to see the Ruta de los Siete Lagos is by car . Renting your own car means you can be flexible and stop at the lakes that YOU want to stop at.

The lakes are (mostly) well signed so you won’t miss them along the way.

It’s very easy to rent a car (check out my full guide to renting a car in Argentina ), and you can hire a car in Bariloche, San Martin de los Andes and Villa la Angostura. | Book online with Discover Cars

You won’t need a 4WD – a small car is fine, even for the dirt road sections that branch off the main highway. If you’re visiting in the peak summer season, book your car rental well in advance (same goes for hotels).

You can easily do the route in a day , with plenty of time stopping at miradors (viewpoints) and getting off the main highway to see some of the other lakes.

Spend most of the day slowly driving along the route, and factor in about 2 hours for the return drive (3 hours if you’re returning to Bariloche). It’ll take you around 10 hours, so start early in the morning. It’s a big day, so plan to share the driving with someone else.

A better option is to take your time and do the route in two days. On day 1, stop at a few lakes on the way, and then visit the rest of the viewpoints on your return trip on day 2. There are hosterias and camping sites along the way to spend a night or two in.

A straight, empty road extending into the distance, flanked by greenery and purple wildflowers, with snow-capped mountains ahead under a clear blue sky. The views along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos in Argentina are spectacular.

Taking a guided tour of the Ruta de los Siete Lagos

If you don’t want to rent a car, then your next best option to see the Ruta de los 7 Lagos is on a guided tour.

These tours take all the stress out of driving and planning the trip – leave it in someone else’s hands and just enjoy the views.

There are a couple of Ruta de los Siete Lagos tour options:

  • This full-day tour , which includes hotel pick-up and drop-off (lunch not included)
  • This full-day 7 Lakes tour includes a few hours to explore San Martin de los Andes (meals not included)
  • This 10-hour bus tour stops at all the main lakes along the route (meals not included)

All three tours depart from and return to Bariloche.

Biking the Ruta de los Siete Lagos

Got a few more days and an adventurous spirit? Then bike the Camino de 7 Lagos !

Doing the Ruta 7 Lagos en bici is how my husband and I did the trip and it was one of the most spectacular adventures we’ve ever done. The 7 lagos bike tour took us 3 days , biking between 4-6 hours each day .

Want to tackle the Ruta de los Siete Lagos on two wheels like we did? There are several bike rental companies in Bariloche, but after much research we chose Cordillera Bikes and I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Get in touch with Danny and tell him I sent you!

A selfie of a smiling man and woman (the author and her husband) wearing sunglasses and helmets, with a lake and mountains in the background. Try biking the Ruta de los Siete Lagos route over 3 days - it's a great adventure to have in Argentina!

What to expect

Danny, the owner of Cordillera Bikes , was available on Skype in the weeks in the lead up to our trip and organised everything for us . He provided the bikes, panniers, tools and spare parts, and a map for us to follow. He pointed out some secret spots for us to stop at along the way. Danny also called ahead to arrange our accommodation in advance, and it was nice to know that we had somewhere confirmed for the two nights.

Our first night was in a family-run hosteria . They cooked our food, with a delicious and huge milanesa for dinner and a warming submarino (hot chocolate) when we arrived.

For our second night, we stayed in a cute cabin with a small kitchen. We packed food for this night (pasta), and also packed snacks for the journey.

For water , we collected it at the accommodation each night, as well as from streams along the way (take water purification tablets).

The Ruta de los 7 Lagos biking route Danny recommends normally starts in Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes, in Villa la Angostura. You can catch a ferry from Bariloche, but unfortunately for us we couldn’t get tickets for the morning ferry. The afternoon ferry would have gotten in too late, meaning we’d end up riding in the dark, which I wasn’t entirely comfortable doing.

Instead, Danny’s team drove us from Bariloche to Villa la Angostura early in the morning. The team also picked us up from San Martín de los Andes and drove us back to Bariloche.

The start of the road (out of Villa la Angostura) includes a section that is a major trucking route to Chile, but the traffic thins out after a while.

Alternatively, you could bring your own bikes and equipment and do this trip entirely yourself. There are campsites along the way, many with well-stocked general stores and bathroom facilities.

Do you need to be fit to bike the Ruta de 7 Lagos?

This was probably one of the first questions I asked Danny! After biking the route myself, I would say that you definitely need a moderate to high level of fitness . I struggled on some of the steeper hills and even the gradual inclines got to me.

Prepare in advance if you plan to bike the 7 Lakes Route.

I’m also not a very experienced bike rider but managed to get through the three days fairly easily and without any falls off the bike!

An aerial view of a derelict bridge over a clear, calm river surrounded by dense green forest. Mountains loom in the distance under a cloudy sky. There are more than a dozen lakes along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos in Argentina, along with picturesque rivers and streams.

What to pack for biking the Ruta de los Siete Lagos

Don’t pack too much ! Your paniers are pretty small and you need room for the spare parts and tools that Cordillera Bikes provides. Here’s what I recommend you take:

  • Helmet (provided by Cordillera Bikes)
  • Cleats if you know how to use them (I don’t and don’t feel comfortable with them on so I didn’t use them, but my husband did)
  • 1-2 changes of clothes (we wore the same thing each day and washed it each evening)
  • Sweater for night time
  • Rain jacket if the weather looks like it will bring rain (it did for us all day on our second day!)
  • Padded bicycle shorts to protect your tush – a must pack!! | Buy padded bicycle shorts on Amazon
  • Gloves for the cold mornings (we bought some in Villa la Angostura because I’d forgotten them!) | Buy gloves on Amazon
  • Sunscreen , hat and sunglasses
  • Water purification tablets – the water we collected from streams along the way looked clean but better to be safe than sorry!
  • Snacks and food if you’re staying at campsites or self-contained accommodation – and a bottle of wine to celebrate your achievements each night!

Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route)

One of the main tourist destinations in the Argentine Patagonia is the Ruta de los Siete Lagos, the “Seven Lakes Route”, which runs for about 100 km from San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura , through Lanín National Park and Nahuel Huapi National Park.

Table of Contents

How to travel the Ruta de los Siete Lagos?

The Seven Lakes Route runs along RN 40 . It is completely paved , with many curves and it’s in good condition, ideal to travel it by rental car or by excursion. Although there is public transportation from San Martín de los Andes to Villa la Angostura or Bariloche , it’s not recommended to do it using this type of transportation, since there are many viewpoints to the lakes to stop and take pictures.

Check here if you want to rent a car in San Martín de los Andes .

What to see on the Seven Lakes route?

The route precisely crosses the shores of seven lakes, which are Lácar, Machónico, Falkner, Villarino, Escondido, Correntoso and Espejo . In each of the lakes, there is a parking area with viewpoints . Also, there are some places by the lake ideal for a picnic at noon.

📷 Book the Seven Lakes Road excursion from Villa La Angostura .

📷 If you are staying in Bariloche, check here the San Martín de los Andes tour that includes the Seven Lake Route . Included: Transport by bus and English speaking guide. Not included: Lunch.

The lakes have clear water, although they are very cold for bathing even in the summer season, since they are of glacial origin . They are all surrounded by high mountains, which gives it a fantastic natural scenery. Along the way, you can learn about the flora and fauna of the region , as there are many informative panels on the viewpoints.

Aside from the route itself, there are also several detours by gravel roads , such as going to Quila Quina beach on the shore of Lake Lácar, or taking the detour along Route 65 to the town of Villa Traful .

Best time of year to do the Seven Lakes Route

Although the route can be done at all times of the year, the best time it’s during summer, early fall or late spring , when the route is not snowy or suffers frost.

If you do it in winter in your own car or rental, it is advisable to take chains for the tires and pay attention to the weather forecast.

Sleeping on the Seven Lakes Route

There are many campsites to sleep on the shores of the lakes , although they are only open during high season (November to March). Otherwise, it’s ideal to stay at a hotel or lodge in San Martín de los Andes or Villa La Angostura.

Ruta de los 7 Lagos: Epic Road Trip to the 7 Lakes in Patagonia

Reading Time: 8 minutes

Easily one of Argentina’s best road trips rests along Ruta 40, ruta de los 7 lagos in Patagonia. The section between Villa La Angostura and San Martin de los Andes in particular. If you’re in Bariloche, taking this trip is absolutely an activity worth doing. If you’re curious about other activities in Bariloche, I wrote a blog post about just that.

Officially, there are seven lakes along this route, though there are several more stops just off the main road, from extra lakes to waterfalls and hikes.

The official 7 Lakes:

How to see the Ruta de los 7 Lagos

There are two main ways to go about seeing the lakes: booking a tour & car rental. I opted for the car rental route.

I used Rucaco Rental Cars, as it is in the center of Bariloche. However, there are certainly other car rental options around town. Rucaco whatsapp number: +54 9 2944 89 8934

If you want to rent a car, you’ll need to show your passport, driver’s license, and a valid credit card. You can still pay in cash at the counter, but you’ll need to show a credit card for security. The cost was 12,000 pesos per day ($40).

Each ‘day’ is a 24-hour period; you’ll need to drop off the car the following day at the same time. You’ll also need to return the car with a full gas tank. There are several around Bariloche, so this shouldn’t present a problem. Also, gas tends to be more affordable in Patagonia than in the rest of the country.

I picked the car up at 2 pm on the first day, and dropped it off at 2 pm on the last day.

The benefit of renting a car is that you can make as many stops as you want, for as long as possible. A tour will stop only at the official 7 lakes, and Cascada Villugnanco, and for only several minutes at each stop.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, there is also the possibility to rent a bike and ride several kilometers along this route as well.

tour 7 lagos bariloche

How Long Do You Need?

If you drive from Bariloche directly to San Martin de los Andes with no stops, it will take just over 3 hours. Therefore, a round trip will take 6 hours without stopping. Add a few more hours for stops. Add an hour for lunch. Technically, you could do this in one day. But do you really want a 10-hour day of rushing to fit everything in? My answer to that question was a resounding NO. But if you don’t mind the long day, if you’re crunched for time, or you only want to rent a car for half a day, then it is certainly possible.

Needless to say, there are several options for arranging your time around this adventure; I chose to rent a car for 48 hours, over the course of 3 days.

I, along with 2 friends, picked the car up at 2pm in Bariloche. We then made our way up north, making stops at Villa La Angostura, Lago Nahuel Huapi viewpoints, Mirador Inalco, Playa Lago Espejo, and Lago Correntoso. Then we headed directly to San Martin de los Andes to check into our accommodation and go to dinner.

Our second day was dedicated to seeing the area around San Martin de los Andes. We hiked at Cerro Colorado, cooled off at Playa Yuco, and had dinner at a hip indoor food market back in San Martin.

We got up early to head back south; we stopped at all the places we missed on the way up: Lago Machónico, Lago Hermoso, Cascada Villugnanco, Lago Falkner, Lago Villarino, Lago Escondido, Lago Espejo Chico, and a quick stop at Puerto La Angostura. We made it back to Bariloche just in time to drop off the car again by 2pm.

Personally, this amount of time worked for me. I saw what I wanted to see. If you aren’t interested in the area around San Martin de los Andes, you can easily complete the route in two days: one day up, one night in San Martin, and one day down. I stayed just outside of San Martin in a shared cabin.

If you have more time and want to see more, of course, your itinerary can be easily expanded. There are campsites all along the route of the seven lakes. You can also spend time north of San Martin de los Andes visiting other lakes, such as Lago Lolog and the town of Junin de los Andes.

What’s the best time to go?

tour 7 lagos bariloche

The answer to this question depends entirely on what you want to see. It is beautiful all year, but it changes dramatically depending on the season. The high seasons for the area are winter and summer. Regardless of the season, however, I suggest booking your accommodations in advance. Try filtering for the ‘pay when you arrive’ option so that you can pay in cash .

The 4 Seasons Breakdown

In Argentina’s winter (July and August), there will be snow. This area is famous for skiing, and you’ll see several ski resorts along the route, and just outside Bariloche. Lots of people come to the area in these months for winter sports. You should take more precautions and drive slower in this time period. However, snow-covered lakes are also stunning.

In Argentina’s summer (January and February), you’ll find the most tourists. Of course, seeing the surrounding nature will be stunning, though you might run into more cars on the road and more people at all the stops. The weather will also be much warmer, so you can take advantage of the heat and jump into the lakes to cool off.

Shoulder seasons are generally the best time to travel, especially in Argentina. You’ll find fewer people and more affordable prices.

Fall in Argentina (March, April, and May) is a nice time to visit, but the weather will definitely be getting cooler down south. However, you will also be treated to amazing colors as the leaves begin to change.

Spring in Argentina (November and December) is a perfect time to visit the area. It’s warm during the day, but chilly at night. There are fewer people around, and prices have not yet soared for accommodation. The lakes are beautiful as ever. If you like old classic cars, you may consider planning your trip around the 1000 Millas ; This occurs every spring and is a classic car race of 1000 miles around Patagonia. I’m not so into cars, but it was very cool to see all the old cars passing us by along the route.

Where should I stay in San Martin de los Andes?

There are a ton of places to stay in the area. I stayed just outside of town in an A-framed cabin with a shared kitchen. It was very cozy and quiet.

There are also very nice cabins and hotels with a waterfront view such as: Cabañas Lago Soñado de los Andes Puerto Lacar Lodge SMARG Cabaña frente al lago

A very popular hostel (breakfast included) is the Alhue Patagonia Hostel. This is where my friend stayed, and enjoyed it.

Is this trip worth it?

Yes, 100 times yes . Patagonia is incredibly beautiful, but the ruta de los 7 lagos is one step up. Every view will astound you, every lake will take your breath away, and you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of photos you’ll have by the end. I spent two weeks around Bariloche, and driving the route of the seven lakes was easily one of my favorite activities. Whenever you decide to take this trip, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

¿Viajas a Patagonia?

Excursión a Villa Pehuenia |

Excursión a Villa Meliquina y Villa Traful |

📌 SUBIR AL CERRO CAMPANARIO DE BARILOCHE (Circuito Chico)

📌 VISITAR CERRO TRONADOR, VENTISQUERO NEGRO Y GLACIAR CASTAÑO OVERO
