Best Places To Stay In Jalisco

The state of Jalisco has so much variety with a lot to offer. Everything from beach towns, mountains, forests, jungles, big cities, small towns and pueblo mágicos.

Here are the best places to stay in Jalisco – covering the variety of experiences this beautiful state can give you.

📍 GUADALAJARA: The third largest metropolitan area in Mexico, Guadalajara (GDL) is a big city but much slower paced than Mexico City. GDL has a ton of cool bars, clubs, restaurants and malls. I’ll be completely honest, I enjoy Mexico City a lot more than GDL. However, I still think it’s a cool place to visit and there are a ton of cool areas near GDL for day trips or weekend getaways.

image of vibrant street with colorful flags in Tlaquepaque

It’s also a great destination for bachelorette/bachelor parties or just any group trip. They have trendy restaurants that are great for big groups, fancy clubs, beach clubs, a ton of bars, excursions, resorts, Airbnbs and other smaller towns to visit nearby.

I normally don’t like super touristy towns but PV still feels quite local and traditional to me. The Old Town known as “Zona Romantica” is really charming with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture.

➡️ Vallarta Shores Beach Hotel

📍 SAYULITA: As mentioned above, PV is a great hub to get to other smaller towns such as Sayulita. This once sleepy little surf town with mostly local travelers has now become a popular destination for foreigners. I’ll be honest, I miss what it was before. But nonetheless, it’s now a fun place to go with a lot of bars, restaurants and boutique shops.

image of street in the main square in Sayulita

The best way to get to Sayulita is by flying into Puerto Vallarta. The town is about an hour and 15 minutes drive from PV.

image of me on the beach in Sayulita

Pro tip: if you’re looking for a chiller vibe go to San Pancho which is a smaller beach town just 15 minutes away.

➡️ Ximena Hotel Boutique

📍 AJIJIC: You could definitely stay a weekend or a few days in Ajijic but this could also be done as a day trip coming from Guadalajara. This lakeside gem is located an hour away (by driving) from GDL along the shores of the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala. Charming streets, laid-back vibes and beautiful lakeside views make Ajijic a perfect weekend getaway.

image of AJIJIC sign by Lake Chapala

➡️ Casa del Sol Inn

📍 MAZAMITLA: This mountain town Pueblo Mágico is the perfect nature escape. Spend your days in cozy mountain cabins, going on hikes during the day, and just enjoying nature all around you. I stayed at an amazing bubble glamping resort that was such a unique experience. Check out the link below!

I rode 2.5 hours on the back of a motorcycle to Mazamitla from Guadalajara (would not recommend it – too long for me on a motorcycle). If you take a car it shouldn’t take more than 2 hours unless you’re going around traffic hours.

➡️ La Estela Bub ble Glamping

image of bubble glamping in the mountains in Mazamitla

📍 SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE: Nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, San Sebastián del Oeste is a quaint colonial pueblo mágico that makes you feel like you’ve taken a journey back in time.

The best way to get to San Sebastian del Oeste is flying into Puerto Vallarta and the drive from there should be less than 2 hours.

Where is the swing in Tequila, Jalisco?

The extreme swing is located just 10 minutes outside the town of Tequila.

What is the best month to go to Jalisco?

It really depends on where in Jalisco you plan to go and what you want to experience considering that Jalisco has beaches, mountains, big cities, and small towns. Generally speaking, the rainy season is around June to October. However, I’ve definitely been to Jalisco during this time without it raining but the summer months are really hot so for that reason, I would avoid it. It’s safe to say you’d be good to go around November to May.

Is it safe to travel to Jalisco, Mexico right now?

I’ve traveled to Jalisco several times by myself and I’ve generally felt safe. Is there cartel activity there? Yes. But I’ve traveled all of Mexico solo and with friends and I haven’t had any major issues. I feel like if you aren’t around certain situations or cause any trouble you should be fine.

Just like anywhere else in the world, practice safe measures and always be aware of your surroundings. (Don’t walk alone at night if the area is quite desolate, don’t flash your money or expensive things around, carry only what you need for the day, etc.)

My Guide to Tequila, Jalisco 2024

  • by Nellie Huang

Tequila is arguably one of the most fun, vibrant spots in Mexico. Here’s my complete guide to visiting Tequila Jalisco, including where to stay and which distilleries to visit.

Did you know that tequila is actually named after the town where it originated? The town of Tequila is in fact one of the cutest pueblos mágicos or magical towns in Mexico , with pastel-colored colonial buildings and cobblestoned streets surrounded by agave fields. The beautiful agave landscapes and age-old distilleries of Tequila have even earned it  UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

On our recent trip to Guadalajara , we made a detour to Tequila and had a great time exploring the historical town, visiting the agave plantations and distilleries, and tasting all kinds of tequila. The town itself is an absolute delight, while the surrounding landscape is reminiscent of the wild landscapes depicted in movies about Mexico. In this guide, I’ll share with you how to get to Tequila, things to do in Tequila, and best places to stay, eat and drink.

Located just one hour from the bustling metropolis of Guadalajara , Tequila offers a super fun getaway for travelers seeking a taste of Mexican culture and history. Renowned as the birthplace of tequila, the town draws tourists from all over the globe.

Many flock to the town to learn about the production of tequila, indulge in local cuisine, and immerse in traditional music and dance. Whether you’re a tequila enthusiast or simply curious about the iconic beverage, a trip to the town promises a newfound appreciation for this Mexican spirit.

How To Get To Tequila Jalisco

Guadalajara is the nearest big city to Tequila, and it’s just 1 hour away. The most convenient option is to get there is on the Tequila Plus bus. Purchase tickets are priced at 107 MXN (US$5.50) for a one-way trip. Buses depart every hour or so in both directions, and the journey typically takes around 1.5 hours. If you want to be picked up from your hotel, book a car transfer through Bookaway.

Alternatively, rent a car, like we did. It’s an easy and short drive. I always book our car rental through DiscoverCars.com as they’ve consistently given me the best rates and customer support. Search for car rentals in Guadalajara here.

Another great option is to join a day tour from Guadalajara. The tours usually provides transport from your hotel, brings you around the town and includes visits to the Jose Cuervo distillery. This full-day excursion is one of the best tequila tours in Mexico, and has received excellent reviews. Book your tour here.

Getting to Tequila Jalisco From Guadalajara

Getting around Tequila on foot is easy because the town is compact and pedestrian-friendly. You can easily explore the town’s attractions, from local shops brimming with artisanal treasures to inviting restaurants serving up traditional Mexican cuisine.

But if you want to explore the surrounding agave fields and distilleries, then a car will definitely come in handy. We rented a car and it was useful to get from town to our hotel, and the nearby distilleries. It definitely helped us make use of our time in Tequila and see as much as we could.  Search for car rentals.

Tequila Jalisco - Walking around Tequila Jalisco Mexico

The best time to visit Tequila is in February, March, and April. These months mean favorable weather conditions and fewer crowds, making it ideal to explore the charms of this enchanting town. I visited Tequila in February; I can attest to the great weather. From January to March, the weather is at its most inviting, with temperatures hovering around 34°C (93℉) in the day.

It’s best to avoid visiting during Mexican holidays , as it can get really crowded. Summer is not the best time to visit Tequila as it can get really hot and humid in the day. Regardless of the season, Tequila is a great place to visit all year-round.

Tequila Jalisco - Stay In A Tequila Barrel

Many opt for a quick day trip to Tequila as it’s just an hour from Guadalajara and it’s a small place you can see in a day.

But that would be a shame, as the town is worth more of your time. I spent three days in Tequila and I was really glad to have time to explore everything there is to do here.

Tequila Jalisco - day trip to Tequila

The U.S. State Department recently updated its travel advisory for Jalisco. Highway 70, the scenic route from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara, has been removed from the travel restrictions list. This highway passes through three charming pueblo mágicos , each with significant cultural heritage to the state.

Tequila is a touristy place, and visitors who don’t get involved in drugs will be fine. I didn’t feel unsafe in any way during my trip but you should stay informed about current conditions and heed any local advisories.

Things To Do In Tequila Jalisco

Beyond tequila drinking, there are a few different things to do in the town of Tequila that are fun and interesting!

The best way to get to Tequila is onboard the Jose Cuervo Express , an exclusive vintage-style train in Mexico. This unique journey will transport you from Guadalajara to Tequila, through agave fields, with a series of tequila tastings and a visit of the Jose Cuervo distillery in Tequila town.

The interior of the train is adorned with exquisite wood-paneled walls and offers comfortable seating. Some carriages will have a bar conveniently located inside. As part of the experience, you’ll participate in a traditional toast featuring one of the country’s premium tequilas.

It’s not a cheap experience though – tickets for the Jose Cuervo Express start at 2,590 pesos ($127) and vary in price based on the chosen level of luxury for your train car. The train operates exclusively on Saturdays, typically every second week.

Join A Tequila Distillery Tour

The main attraction of Tequila is undoubtedly its iconic tequila distilleries. I strongly recommend the Jose Cuervo Tequila Tour to La Rojena. La Rojena is the home of Jose Cuervo, the world’s most famous tequila.  Book your tour here.

It is the oldest distillery globally and the largest producer, supplying a third of the world’s tequila. The Jose Cuervo Tequila Tour goes for 440 MXN ($22.50). It offers visitors a chance to witness the intricate tequila-making process and sample exclusive tequilas rarely found elsewhere on the planet.

Tequila Jalisco - Jose Cuervo Tequila Tour

As the third oldest distillery globally and the second-largest tequila producer, Casa Suaza offers various tour options starting from 230 MXN ($12). Their most popular tour includes a visit to an agave plantation, a tour of the distillery, complimentary tastings, and a refreshing margarita amidst their picturesque gardens.

You can also explore other distilleries such as Don Julio and Tequila Fortaleza , each offering unique insights into the tequila-making tradition. The tours are usually led by English-speaking guides.

Tequila Jalisco - Casa Suaza Tours

Tequila has a colorful historic center, where the cobblestone streets and colonial buildings effortlessly transport you back in time. The plaza principal, or main square, is a hive of activity especially in the evening when the temperature drops. This is also where you’ll find the “Tequila” sign. Snap a photo here if you like cheesy shots!

Tequila Jalisco - the PLaza Principal

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1649, is a majestic building made of stone blocks in colonial architectural style located opposite the main square of Tequila.

It has a single tower with a double-arched bell tower and on the façade the entrance arch is flanked by Doric columns and has a niche with an image of San Miguel Arcángel. The interior of the church is of a single nave, standing out for its vaults, stained glass windows and for its main altarpiece of neoclassical style.

This museum offers an intriguing walk through the origin of the tequila drink from the pre-Hispanic times until modernity.

In the central courtyard, you can see one of the old mills that were used to crush the huge agave pineapples and obtain the original must. The museum also shows the old farming implements and tools that were used in the cultivation and care of agave plantations.

Tequila Jalisco - National Museum of Tequila

Located in the heart of the historic center is the municipal market, where the locals eat. It is the best spot to try authentic Mexican foods here, specifically antojitos (street foods) like birria (a soupy goat stew).

pobDoña Mary’s food stand is one of the most popular spots here, offering home-cooked foods with a village flavor. Her quesabirria was one of the best I’ve ever tried, and so were the tacos de carne asada.

Tequila Jalisco - Eat at the Mercado Municipal

In the beautiful Los Abuelos Museum, you’ll get to learn the origin and history of the Sauza family, also known as the “aristocracy of tequila”. Don Cenobio Sauza founded La Perseverancia distillery in 1873, and began to produce the first tequilas in Mexico.

Since then, more than 5 generations of Sauzas have continued the family tradition of making the best tequilas. In this museum, you can admire the tools used 150 years ago in the production of tequila, as well as the furniture in use during the time.

Tequila Jalisco - Los Abuelos Museum

Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the town by sipping cantaritos , a tequila-based cocktail, with grapefruit and lime juice, served in a clay cup known that helps keep the drink cold. As you stroll through the charming streets, you’ll meet numerous vendors selling cantaritos of various sizes and styles.

Once you’ve finished your drink, simply take your cantarito to any of the other stands scattered around town for a refill, usually costing around 60 pesos ($3.52).

Tequila Jalisco - Cantarito As A Souvenir

Just 15 minutes outside of Tequila, lies Cantaritos El Guero , a local hotspot bursting with energy. Here, you can share massive cantaritos with friends, alongside mouth-watering cuisine and live music that sets the mood for a memorable evening.

Tequila Jalisco - cantaritos to buy

There are so many things to do in Tequila it’s worth staying the night in Tequila – we stayed at the unique Matices Hotel de Barricas , where rooms are housed in giant tequila barrels, surrounded by agave fields. You get the sensation you’re in the middle of tequila backcountry, even though you’re just minutes from town.  Check rates.

Every hotel guest is welcomed to a free guided tour and tequila tasting at their distillery. There are English and Spanish tours that run twice a day and the guides are fun and engaging. There’s also a gorgeous cave restaurant with giant Cathedral ceilings and a bottleshop selling all kinds of tequila.

You’re also free to wander around the agave field and snap photos with artistic sculptures. I highly recommend a stay here, even if it is just for one night.

How to Plan a Fun Day Trip to Tequila, Jalisco: Tours and tequila tasting!

Mexico is known for beautiful beaches and gorgeous weather. However, it may be most famous for tequila.  But did you know the drink is actually named after a Mexican town?

When visiting Mexico, a popular activity is to take a tequila tasting tour and there is no better place to do this than in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. Tours run to most distilleries, from small family-owned companies to the multi-national brands, from short budget tours to luxury journeys.

We finally made it to Tequila and had a great afternoon wandering town and sampling its namesake drink. Luckily we had the in-laws to be designated drivers!

If tequila, or alcohol in general, isn’t your thing there are still plenty of reasons to visit this quaint town, designated both a Pueblo Mágico and the area a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

People standing behind the colourful 'Tequila' sign in Jalisco, Mexico.

What is a Pueblo Mágico?

Literally translated, pueblo mágico means ‘magical town’.  The government of Mexico has named various towns around the country as pueblos mágicos for their natural beauty, cultural or historical significance.  Towns have to apply and make their case for inclusion then, if accepted, maintain certain standards to keep the title.

Our Tequila guide told us that they are not allowed to have traffic lights in the historic centre, buildings must be painted historic colours only, the streets have to be cobblestone, nothing can be taller than the main church tower and a few other requirements.

Why should you visit Tequila, Jalisco?

Miles before you reach the actual town of Tequila, you will drive past fields and fields of agave plants.  The area boasts a volcano, lava fields and ancient ruins as well if you have the time or vehicle to explore further.

It’s no coincidence that the town has the same name as the alcohol.  While the infamous drink is synonymous with Mexico for most people, it actually has to come from this specific region to be classified ‘tequila’.

The town of Tequila has been making its namesake drink since the 16th century.  The majority of people in town are employed in the tequila industry somehow.  If you are really interested in the history and process beyond just the flavour, you need to come to the town of Tequila.

How to get to Tequila, Jalisco

Tequila is about an hour or so west of Guadalajara.  The easiest way is by car, or organized tour, as it is a fair distance and basically in the middle of nowhere.  However, buses do run from the Vallarta Plus Zapopan Terminal in Guadalajara for around $5 USD each way.  If you’re staying near the Zapopan terminal in Guadalajara this is a great option.

What types of tequila tours are available?

We took the cheaper tour option that is available just by showing up in town and paid around $150 pesos each, negotiating to throw in the visit to the agave fields.  However, we weren’t too interested in the finer details, going to the bigger distilleries and had our own car.

We also visited on a quiet weekday so showing up without a reservation was no problem.  This isn’t the best option for everyone.

The Jose Cuervo Distillery is one of the town’s main attractions and the oldest and largest tequila distillery in the world.  Casa Herradura, Casa Sauza and Los Abuelas are other larger outfits in the area.  There are various tour options at different price points.

If you’re looking for a regular tour (i.e., not the train) but don’t have a car, then consider taking a tour from Guadalajara.  This tour includes round-trip transportation, time in the town, a distillery tour and tequila tastings.  Check out reviews and prices now.

For those people that really want an incredible experience, there is the Tequila Express train that runs from Guadalajara.  This train is ride is all about the journey, not just the destination.  Guests are treated to tequila tastings, snacks and a full mariachi band while travelling through agave fields.

Once in Tequila, there is a tour of Jose Cuervo’s La Rojeña distillery and time to explore the town.  This train runs only on weekends and definitely needs to be booked in advance.  The Jose Cuervo Express can be booked at different luxury levels and for either a sunrise or sunset experience.  Note: the train will be taken in one direction and a bus in the other.

Our experience with a Tequila, Jalisco tour

Every time we visit Terry’s parents in Chapala, Mexico we talk about making a day trip to Tequila.  Many of their friends make regular trips to stock their liquor cabinets but we’ve never made the journey.  This time I vowed it would be different.

We hopped in the car one morning and took the new toll road that bypasses Guadalajara.  It was a beautiful sunny day and the scenery isn’t breathtaking but picturesque just the same.  About an hour later we arrived in town although it took a bit of circling to find parking.  Pueblo Magicos aren’t great for this as they generally have narrow, cobblestone streets in the centre.

The buildings are historical, colourful and filled with small stores and drink stands.  Looking online ahead of time, it appeared that only the expensive tours were available to pre-book.  Instead, we showed up in town to see what kind of deals were on offer.  No sooner had we parked people were offering us tours.  We politely declined them all as we headed to the main square.

Finally, we settled on a tour from someone with an official badge and no hard-sell.  We opted for the tequila tour in Spanish that was leaving within the next 15 minutes rather than wait an hour or so for the English version.  We had recently taken a Spanish tour in Peru and understood every word so our confidence was high!

Tip: Ask plenty of questions to ensure your tour will cover the important things to you. I was mostly interested in the agave fields and not all tours include these.

The Tequila Tour

Our ride showed up, an honest-to-goodness giant tequila barrel, and we climbed in with our pre-purchased favourite Mexican snacks.

Side note: do not leave Mexico before you buy home-made potato chips with lime, salt and Valentina hot sauce and consumed a few tubs of fresh cut fruits (preferably with lime and chili).

The first part of our tour took us around town and then out to the agave fields on the edge of town.  Our guide spoke clearly and, as it was just the two of us, was happy to repeat himself if necessary or answer our questions.

Man with snacks beside a car designed like a tequila barrel on a tequila tour, Jalisco Mexico.

From here, our barrel drove us through town to the old washing station, l os lavaderos .  The next stop was a tequila distillery.  We had chosen a tour that included one of the more historical, smaller companies, Orendaín.  Unfortunately, from here it kind of fell apart for us.

At this point, we were combined with a larger group as everyone has to use the distillery’s own tour guides.  Our guy was a pretty fast talker and unfortunately, they use a rather bad quality sound system.  We picked up the odd word and phrase here and there but it didn’t take us long to switch off.

We did feel better when a group of college friends in our group told us that they weren’t understanding everything either.  They were all native Spanish speakers.  A little bit of redemption, but it didn’t help us learn anything about the tequila process.

Our one big takeaway?  How to drink tequila properly.

  • Take a deep breath in and hold it.
  • Take a drink.
  • Swallow the liquid then breathe all the air out.

This blows the alcohol fumes away from you and takes out the burn.  Try it, you’ll thank us!

During the tour, everyone is invited to test three levels of tequila quality.  This includes one that hasn’t completed the process and is far stronger than anything legally sold (and honestly, why would anyone want to buy it?).

In the end, we arrived in the tasting room/store and were presented with about 7 or 8 options and an unlimited amount of tastes.  Somehow we had become part of the college group and found ourselves joining in on a few too many tequila rounds.

Not long after, our ‘barrel’ drove us back to the main plaza, this time transformed into a party bus, and we re-joined Terry’s parents.

What to do in Tequila, Jalisco (besides tequila tasting tours)

The town of Tequila is actually a lovely place for a wander and the main plaza is a great spot to people watch.  Take a stroll around the cute little streets and enjoy the relaxed pace of life.  There are also a number of decent looking restaurants around the plaza serving traditional food at decent prices.

One of our all-time favourite drinks, when we visit Terry’s parents in Chapala, is an almond tequila that they get from a friend.  It turns out it is not actually tequila but that doesn’t mean it’s any less delicious.

We decided to hunt it down ourselves while we were in town and found it in a small distillery between the plaza and public laundry station.  Most distilleries have a shop that doesn’t require joining a tour.  Seriously, buy the almond liqueur.

Man and woman sharing a drink in Tequila, Mexico.

Before leaving the town of Tequila, we just had to try a cantarito .  This drink is sold all over town and comes in a clay mug that you get to keep as a bonus souvenir.  It’s made of tequila (surprise, surprise), lime and fruit juices.  It is strong and delicious.  Just the thing on a super hot day in Mexico!

Another popular stop is the National Museum of Tequila.  Opened in 2000, it’s an excellent place to learn more about the history, culture and production of tequila.  We’re not really ‘museum people’ so we haven’t actually visited the museum and, therefore, can’t recommend it one way or the other.

We would really appreciate a share if you found this post helpful!

What was the name of the company that did the Barrel Tour?

I honestly couldn’t tell you and probably never knew! They were parked at the main square waiting to start a tour and we just asked him price and negotiated the tour… but like I said in the post, we had a car and weren’t too worried about the details!

The tour in a barrel looks very interesting but I really like the proper way to drink tequila. I’m looking forward in trying this breath in blow out process. Could be a party happening. Lots of interesting place to see.

The breathing really does take the burn out of tequila – game changer!!

The Best Tequila Tours to Take in Tequila, Mexico

Agave

The charming, rustic town that lends its name to Mexico’s national drink has become a major tourist destination in the past decade. Tequila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 and boasts a range of historic distilleries. Most of these are open to visitors, and we would highly recommend taking a guided tour if you visit the picturesque town.

Jose cuervo express.

The most famous tequila tour is without a doubt the Jose Cuervo Express , which leaves every Saturday at 9.00 or 9.30 a.m. from Guadalajara. After a scenic, hour-long trip in a mock-19th-century railcar, guests are welcomed at Jose Cuervo’s La Rojeña Distillery , which is the oldest in Latin America. Visitors are guided from the brick ovens where the agave is cooked right up to the oak barrels of the aging cellars. They are also given plenty of tequila shots along the way.

Jose Cuervo cellar collection

Experience Tequila

Cofradía turistico 360.

The hands-on tours offered by Hacienda La Cofradía are particularly memorable, giving guests the opportunity to explore the distillery, watch and learn from a jimador – or tequila farmer – and even unleash your creative side by decorating your own bottle in the ceramics factory. The hacienda also boasts a unique boutique hotel, Matices de Barricas, which has spacious rooms shaped like the oak barrels used to age tequila.

Matices de Barricas

Tequila Adventure

If downing tequila shots is not enough of a thrill, Tequila Adventure offers more action-packed activities. For under 800 pesos ($44), you can arrange to rappel down a waterfall or ride a horse through an agave field . The company also offers a guided tour of Los Azules Waterfall, a tour of the Rubio Distillery and a workshop where you make your own agave paper. An excellent option for visitors looking for something a little more unique and unusual.

Tour Tequila Orendain

For travelers on a budget, the Casa Orendain tequila company offers a tour of their distillery La Mexicana for only 195 pesos ($10.40). Less well-known than Jose Cuervo, Orendain is a family-owned Tequila group that was founded in 1926. The company now produces 10 different brands of tequila, and has collected various awards at international events. The tour provides a close-up look at Casa Orendain’s production process, as well as an opportunity to sample freshly distilled tequila, cooked agave and a few aged tequila shots.

Are you looking for the best tequila tours from Guadalajara?

Visiting the Tequila Valley in Central Jalisco state is one of the world’s great culinary experiences. Much like visiting the Champagne region in France or Chianti in Italy, the Tequila Valley is home to the origin story of one of the world’s most popular beverages. Additionally, there are beautiful landscapes, ancient culinary traditions, and cool drinking establishments all over the region.

I have lived in this area since 2009 and I want to help you craft a truly fulfilling tequila tour from Guadalajara with elements of history and culture.

These are the best tequila tours for every sort of traveler including transportation, expert knowledge, and artisanal tasting experiences.

Guadalajara is the capital of tequila country without a doubt. Tequila’s governing body, the Consejo Regulador de Tequila is located here. There is a whole industry of traditional cantinas, modern cocktail bars, and world-class restaurants. Most travelers will simply pass through the Guadalajara Airport and explore the city as they arrange transportation to the valley.

There are a lot of things to do in the Tequila area and some people will only spend one day in the Valley while others will spend a week. I want to help you have a good time in Tequila finding a unique experience for your preferred style of travel.

Best Tequila Tours from Guadalajara

There are a lot of different experiences to be found along the Ruta del Tequila. Some people are going to want to visit the best tequila brands using artisanal processes . Other people might be more interested in the scenic background for some Instagram reels.

My personal feeling is that the best option for Tequila is a self-guided tour renting a car and spending a week ‘puebleando’ hopping from one town to another visiting cult-favorite distilleries and staying in historic haciendas . There are some real luxury experiences to be found.

Not everyone has the time or the desire to drive around the backcountry of Jalisco. These day tours leave from Guadalajara and handle all of the transportation. Most of them offer hotel pickup and will return you back where you started.

1. Best of Tequila and Guachimontones Pyramids in One Day!

Tequila and Guachimontones tour from Guadalajara

⭐️  RATING:  4.92/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW

If you only have one day for a tequila tour from Guadalajara then this is the tour to take. It is the best of the Ruta del Tequila in one day and the most cultural tour on the list. It is a full-day tour because that van covers a lot of ground. Depending on traffic the tour lasts anywhere from 8 to 10 hours.

Visiting the pyramids gives historical context to the tequila beverage. The original people treasured the agave plant and used it to create a plethora of tools, crafts, and carbohydrates. Aguamiel was extracted from the live agaves while cooked agave hearts were eaten and fermented.

The tour guides are an encyclopedia about the history of the region and the beverage. They will pick you up from just about anywhere in Guadalajara and show you two different sides of the Tequila Volcano. The tour starts early at Guachimontones when the weather is still cool. It is a little walk up a hill to get to the pyramids.

After the pyramids, the van heads to the public market in Tequila which is a great option for lunch. Each person can choose regional specialties from a number of different restaurants and food stalls. This is not included in the price of the tour but the prices are affordable. Just outside the market is the main plaza of Tequila where small kiosks sell tequila cocktails called cantaritos.

It is just enough time to see some of Tequila’s main landmarks like the national tequila museum before taking off for the tequila distillery tour. The last stop before heading back to Guadalajara is the traditional hacienda-looking factory with beautiful gardens.

At the end of the tour returns to where you were picked up at your Guadalajara hotel or hostel.

Mickey Marentes is a legendary tour guide around the tequila valley. He provides luxury tours for the real tequila connoisseur who wants to explore all the different types of tequila focusing on additive-free and artisanal tequilas.

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

  • Hotel pickup transportation
  • Two tequila distillery tours
  • Visit the agave fields
  • Tour Downtown Tequila
  • Artisanal tequila tasting
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Lunch is included

The small group tour starts and ends in Guadalajara. He also offers a private tour that could arrange pickup anywhere in the Tequila Valley. The luxury tequila tour would stay at the Hacienda El Carmen boutique hotel for a few nights and arrange a private excursion to the most exclusive distilleries in the valley.

Both tours include round-trip transport from the city of Guadalajara to multiple distilleries, the enchanting town of Tequila, and photo stops to appreciate the agave landscape. There are high-end tequila tastings and professional-level explanations of the tequila-making process. There are a number of variations in the fermentation process and distillation, and aging in different types of oak barrels.

3. José Cuervo Express Tequila Train

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

The Jose Cuervo Express is one of the most luxurious ways to experience Tequila. One of only two operating passenger trains in Mexico, the Jose Cuervo Express is a living piece of Mexico’s history.

Every one of the club cars has been immaculately restored and is a testament to old-world Mexico. Jose Cuervo is famous for selling tequila but also for creating the Mundo Cuervo tourist attraction evoking the soul of Mexico. They are masters of marketing and the imagery is something you will remember for a lifetime.

There are several ways to plan your trip on the Jose Cuervo Express. One direction will be on the train and the other direction will be on a bus that stops at the Jose Cuervo agave plantation for a harvesting demonstration. You can choose to take the train to Tequila in the morning and return on the bus or you can start with the bus and return on the train.

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

The tequila-tasting portion of the trip is on the train and some people may prefer to drink earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. They offer a wide range of house-made tequilas.

The day trip also includes a tour of the Jose Cuervo Distillery, La Rojeña, the oldest distillery in the region.

Mundo Cuervo often reminds me of an amusement park for adults. A lot of thought has been given to every detail and there is more here than you can see in just one day. No matter how many times you return to Tequila it is likely that you will find something new on the Mundo Cuervo campus like a beautiful garden, a museum, or even a concert venue.

4. The Agave Experience Premium Tequila Tour from Guadalajara

The best tequila tours from Guadalajara

Experience Agave organizes professional-level tours of agave-producing regions of Mexico. These experiences bridge the gap between beverage and culture, offering unrivaled access to the people and regions that gave rise to tequila and mezcal. The tour guides are some of the most educated agave enthusiasts in Mexico. Many of them have master’s degrees in tequila from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara.

This is one of the highest-rated tequila tours from Guadalajara on the market today. They offer both small group tours and private tours and hadle all the transportation. You will visit two tequila distilleries, the agave fields, El Arenal, Amatitán, and Tequila.

  • Tequila tasting
  • Expert descriptions

In addition to tequila tours, there are also raicilla tours in Puerto Vallarta and mezcal tours in Oaxaca.

These tours are a good option for hospitality industry professionals with a cursory understanding of the spirits industry. They are going to trace the current state of the industry back to the origins of Mexico.

5. Camina GDL Tequila Full Experience

Camina GDL is one of the best tour operators in Guadalajara. They offer an excellent tour through the Tequila Valley visiting two different artisanal, additive-free distilleries.

The first distillery is set in the agave fields so you can see the harvest and learn about what makes the agave plant so special. They prepare and serve a rustic breakfast that is cooked over a bonfire which is followed by a tequila tasting.

The second distillery is in the heart of the Pueblo Mágico Tequila, Jalisco. It is one of the oldest tequila distilleries in Mexico. There is a beautiful tour that includes a three-course lunch and tequila tasting at a boutique hotel.

What the Camina GDL tequila tour includes:

  • Transportation, snacks, Guide
  • Entrance to the distillery
  • Tasting of 8 types of tequilas
  • Harvest and plant your own agave
  • Breakfast and tequila tasting in the agaves landscape
  • Lunch 3 courses and a cocktail

The folks at Camina GDL are a lot of fun. They know Jalisco really well and want to share the absolute best of the region with you. I guarantee you are going to enjoy their tequila tour.

6. Tequila Express Tour Bus

Not to be confused with the Jose Cuervo Express tequila train, the Tequila Express is a tour bus that provides round-trip transportation from the Camara de Comercio in Guadalajara to the Casa Sauza distillery in Tequila town.

There are several different packages depending on the food, beverage, and transportation style that you prefer. All the tours include a full-day tequila tour with a certified guide and a tour of the distillery and agave plantation.

Guests have plenty of free time to explore the magic village of tequila before heading back to Guadalajara.

Independent Tequila Distillery Tours

Distileria La Fortaleza in Tequila, Jalisco

There are a couple of different experiences to be found in Tequila, Jalisco. A lot of people are in town to drink cheap tequila and get wasted. On the other hand, I want to promote the cultural side of Tequila. There is a lot of history and refined culinary experiences if you do a little bit of research.

The best tequila distillery tours do not offer walk-up service. Reservations must be made in advance. Travelers are responsible for their own transportation and hotel accommodations. This is the best way to experience not just the town of Tequila but the whole Tequila Valley.

I recommend visiting at least one artisanal tequila distillery. If you have spent your whole life drinking commercial tequila, the tequila that is made at Fortaleza and Cascahuin will change your life. I still remember when I tasted a true tequila for the first time. It is a big part of why I am writing all these articles. I love good tequila.

7. Fortaleza Tequila Distillery

Tahona stone crushing agave for tequila

Calle Tabasco 153, Centro, Tequila, Jalisco // Website Contact

In my humble opinion, Tequila Fortaleza offers the most important distillery tour in Tequila, Jalisco. They are a boutique tequila producer making an old-fashioned product for aficionados.

The founder of Tequila Fortaleza comes from a long line of tequila makers that helped define the style of tequila and establish the regulatory counsel that protects tequila from cheap imitations. He is also at the forefront of the Renaissance in tequila making.

Fortaleza makes tequila using ancestral methods that are labor-intensive and time-consuming. They are going back to original production methods to make tequila like their grandparents used to drink before accountants and cost-cutting changed the recipes.

Tequila Fortaleza has created a boutique, distillery tour experience reminiscent of wine country. I highly recommend contacting them a week before your visit to see what they have available.

8. Fabrica de Tequila El Cascahuín

Independent tequila distillery tours from Guadalajara

Ferrocarril 140, San Juan de Dios, El Arenal, Jalisco // Facebook

Tequila Cascahuín is a small, independent distillery making some of the finest tequila in Jalisco. They are using old-school, artisanal methods of cooking, fermenting, and distilling. You should pick up a bottle of their high-proof tequila plata to bring back to the United States because you will not find it outside of Jalisco.

Before you visit one of the large, multinational distilleries you need to see how tequila was made in the old days. These guys are preserving the culture and traditions of a time long past.

9. El Tequileño Distillery

El Tequileño Distillery and tour.

Calle Chiapas 51, Tequila, Jalisco // Website Reservations

El Tequileño was founded by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in 1959. Yes, that Cuervo. They have a boutique hotel on the back of their property and a nice tour that can be combined with a tequila tasting and lunch.

10. La Rojeña Distillery: Mundo Cuervo

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

José Cuervo # 73, Centro, Tequila, Jalisco // Website

When I was in high school I had a hand-me-down Jose Cuervo t-shirt that I adored. I think that everyone can agree that their marking department is one of the best in the world and they have the most famous tequila on the planet. The experiences that Jose Cuervo has created are some of the best things to do in Tequila, Jalisco.

As you would probably imagine, José Cuervo has a large footprint in Tequila. The Jose Cuervo La Rojeña distillery is the oldest distillery in Latin America with plenty of options for guided tours. In addition to the Jose Cuervo distillery, there are event spaces, hotels, restaurants, retail boutiques, and much more. The whole area surrounding the distillery is beautiful and very Instagram-friendly. They have done a good job preserving the colonial charm of rural Jalisco. Even if you don’t tour the Jose Cuervo factory you need to check out Mundo Cuervo.

11. Casa Herradura

Casa Herradura tequila tours from Guadalajara

Doña Gabriela Pena Lozada 405, Hacienda San José del Refugio, Amatitán, Jalisco

One of the world’s most recognizable tequila brands also has a stunning hacienda tour. When it comes to big-name tequila brands there are a couple of options for touring distilleries. You can take the train in from Guadalajara or you drive in and just take the walking tour. There are a couple of different price points depending on the tequila tastings that you are interested in. Honestly, the expensive tasting doesn’t seem necessary because I am not that into the añejo and extra añejo tequilas that cost a ton of money.

Jima agave harvest demonstration on tequila tour

Tours are in English and in Spanish but make sure to call ahead to get the schedule. Intermediate-level Spanish speakers will struggle to understand the technical vocabulary of the distillation process.

The Best Tequila Tastings in Guadalajara

Interestingly, it is more common to find classic cantinas that serve all the commercial tequilas and has a very small selection of artisanal tequilas from small distilleries. It is worth the effort to search out tequilas that are made without artificial flavoring and colorings.

Jalisco is the best place in the world to learn about the different types of tequila .

12. El Gallo Altanero

Guadalajara tequila tours

Calle Marsella 126, Colonia Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Instagram

The first option is to make a reservation or head over to the Gallo Altanero tequila bar. They have one of the best agave programs in the world and host plenty of visiting bartenders learning about Jalisco’s historic agave culture.

Not only do they have an exceptional selection of different brands of tequilas but they know how to describe them and prepare them in cocktails. The Gallo Altanero was named one of the 50 best bars in North America in 2022 .

13. Mezonte: Destilados Mexicanos de Agave

Calle Argentina 299, Colonia Americana, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Instagram

Mezcal and tequila tours from Guadalajara

In addition to learning about just tequila, there is a whole world of agave-based spirits out there. Mezonte Destilados de Agave has classes about the cultural significance of the agave to the Mexican people. Pedro Jiménez, the owner, is an expert and has set up an NGO that promotes, supports, and preserves the production and practices of traditional agave spirits. Mezonte is more of a classroom and reservations are recommended. He also owns a bar called Pare de Sufrir where you can taste a WIDE variety of agave spirits.

14. Agüita Agaveria

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

Calle Marsella 167, Colonia Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Facebook

Agüita Agaveria is not focused specifically on tequila but on agave spirits in general. They have a fine selection of hard-to-find tequilas from small producers and a respectable cocktail program. This is an excellent place to go for a tequila tasting.

I have learned a lot about the geography of Jalisco from the tequila-producing pueblos. It is fun to plan tequila tours to the pueblos that make your favorite tequilas.

Tequila Tours FAQ

What is tequila.

Tequila is Mexico’s national drink, but it is also the name of a volcano, a town, and even a region with 11 unique municipalities. Each municipality is a little town with cobblestone streets, a lot of charm, and hospitality. There are plenty of tequila distilleries throughout the region and many of these tours combine a distillery tour with some other cultural activity.

The beautiful blue agave fields are a designated Unesco world heritage site and a top destination in Mexico. The magical town of Tequila is the main attraction but there are a lot of different tours exploring Jalisco’s historic tequila culture.

Blue agave fields near Tequila, Jalisco

How far is Tequila from Guadalajara?

The town of Tequila is located 65 km (40 miles) from downtown Guadalajara. The fastest way to get to Tequila from Guadalajara is the toll road which takes just over an hour. The free road adds about 30 minutes to the drive but is more enjoyable because of the agave landscapes and pueblos along the way.

Stopping for tacos in Arenal or cocktails in Amatitan will be a highlight of the trip to Tequila.

Taking a bus or a train will be significantly slower than driving a car.

When is the best time to visit Tequila?

The best time to visit Tequila is in the fall after the rains have stopped and the agave landscapes are a vivid shade of green. The temperatures are mild and there is a lot going on in the region including festivals and fairs.

Winter is enjoyable too and most Canadians will laugh at what the locals call cold.

Spring is the hottest time of year when it can be uncomfortable to be outside without a had in the middle of the day.

Summer is the rainy season when it rains for a little while most days in the afternoon.

Where to Stay in the Tequila Valley?

Most of these day trips to Tequila do not require an overnight stay. However, the Tequila Valley has some spectacular accommodations.

Best Hotels in Tequila, Jalisco

Best Hotels in the Tequila Valley

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

My personal favorite is the Hacienda El Carmen boutique hotel. It is located on the other side of the Tequila Volcano right down the road from the Guachimontones archeological site. There is a tequila distillery on site and one of the most romantic hotels in Mexico.

📍 Luxury Option – Hacienda El Carmen Hotel & Spa

Is Tequila Safe?

Tequila, Jalisco is a very popular destination for international travelers. It is a pueblo mágico and a part of the UNESCO World Heritage program. There is a competent police force in the area and I can’t recall a major security issue that has made the international news.

The problem with safety in Tequila is alcohol-related. It is really easy to drink too much cheap or adulterated tequila and people can get out of control. Know your limits and know how to identify a bad situation.

Much like Napa Valley, Sundays are full of day trippers that should not be driving. Try to avoid being on the road on Sunday afternoon heading back to Guadalajara.

A Final Note on Tequila Tours from Guadalajara

I hope you found something valuable in this article that helps you make the most out of your time in the Tequila Valley. Remember, Tequila is more than just one pueblos. Tequila is the whole valley. There are amazing experiences to be found in this part of Mexico if you are willing to look.

Tequila, Mexico is a small town oasis nestled in the heart of Mexico’s western state of Jalisco. Near the foot of Tequila Volcano, the town not only possesses unmistakable features — from its sprawling agave fields and a colorful town square — but also offers an incredibly rich and vibrant culture. Tequila has recently become one of the most sought destinations for travelers, being named one of Mexico’s “best-kept secrets, ” and one of the best places to visit in 2022 .

The popularity of Tequila can be largely credited to tequila, the spirit. Just like champagne from the Champagne region of France, true tequila comes from Tequila, Mexico. As one of the only places in Mexico where you can drink in the streets, the party atmosphere can be encapsulating.

But it’s not just about drinking and partying — top-notch tours and day adventures showcase Tequila, Mexico’s history and stunning agave fields while sharing the stories of families who have been steeped in the tequila-making tradition for centuries.

Here are a few options:

For a more direct travel method, the Tequila Plus Bus is a great choice. Offering HD movies and reclining seats, the Tequila Plus Bus allows travelers to sit back and relax on their journey. Leaving from Colón in Guadalajara, this 55-minute bus ride provides direct access to the town of Tequila and flexible scheduling allows travelers to book their trips with ease.

If you’re looking for a more collaborative travel experience — whether you’re a solo traveler looking to make friends or prefer to be shown around by locals — BlaBlaCar service might be the best option for you! This carpooling app allows you to book a seat in someone’s car in advance — similar to Uber, but on a schedule.

Where to Stay

The Hotel Solar de las Ánimas, photo by @hotelsolardelasanimas

Where you stay depends on the kind of holiday you want —  and there are plenty of options. Stay closer to the center of town to be in the heart of the action, cup of cantaritos in hand, swaying to the mariachi. On the outskirts, drinks and souvenirs are a bit cheaper and you will be in closer proximity to the town’s e beautiful agave fields.

While there are no major chain hotels in Tequila (sorry – no travel points here), the town embraces its family-centric culture with many boutique stays as alternatives.

For a luxury experience in the center of town, Hotel Solar de las Ánimas reflects old colonial Spanish architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. With balcony views out of a magazine that overlooks the town and sprawling Tequila Volcano, this hotel is sure to make you consider canceling your flight home. Its open-air hallways, painted tile floors, multiple resort-style pools and rooftop bar provide a stunning ambiance sure to please even the most discerning travelers.

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in Tequila and enjoy a unique stay, Matices Hotel de Barricas is the perfect place. Up to three people can stay in a private, detached building shaped like a wooden barrel, enabling you to “become one with the spirit.” The hotel also offers traditional Spanish architecture rooms for those looking for a unique stay without rustic characteristics. Tequila tasting, guided tours, massages and local horseback riding are also available for guests.

For a comfortable room without the theatrics, look no further than Hotel Villa Tequila .

This four-star hotel provides understated elegance and a calming atmosphere for a more modest stay.

This beautifully remodeled mansion is a former retirement home for Tequila’s residents and embraces the history of retired Jose Cuervo Tequila farmers who used to stay here.

F eaturing large, well-kept gardens, decorative fountains, historic ironwork, and tall windows, Hotel Villa Tequila is the perfect place for those who prefer a quiet stay.

Things to Do

Whether you’re new to Tequila (the town or the spirit) or a seasoned enthusiast, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. As a welcoming community that embraces all walks of life, Tequila residents will treat you as one of their own – no matter your interests.

Tequila Tours and Boutique Distilleries

tour a tequila jalisco mexico

Let’s face it. You’re in Tequila — they make tequila. For most, a tequila tour in Mexico is certainly in the cards.

Those who know exactly what type of tequila they like can book tours at individual distilleries. Due to the overwhelming popularity, it’s recommended that you book in advance before arriving in Tequila.

Distilleries like La Fortaleza offer four tequilas — Blanco, Reposado, Anejo, and Blanco (still strength) spirits. Hand-crafted in small batches, these high-quality tequilas are not for the faint of heart. La Fortaleza is known for its embrace of family heritage and tradition, including making tequila the same way it was made 100 years ago by its ancestors.

Casa Sauza offers tours from Tuesday through Sunday and provides a more hands-on experience for visitors. With three types of tours available, you can choose exactly how adventurous you want to be. Train Tours

If you’re a fan of Harry Potter — or just love locomotives — The Jose Cuervo Express is the option for you.

As the only fully-operational, old-style train left in all of Mexico, The Jose Cuervo Express departs from Guadalajara each Saturday and includes a tour of Jose Cuervo’s La Rojeña distillery, free access to Centro Cultural Juan Beckman Gallardo and a visit to the agave fields for an agave harvesting demonstration.

This 11-hour round-trip experience is the perfect, carefree way to visit Tequila and become immersed in the culture.

Train tours through Tequila, Mexico’s agave fields

If that’s not enough, The Tequila Herradura Express immerses travelers in the full tequila experience. This luxury train ride takes visitors through the massive agave fields before reaching its final destination: the original Herradura distillery built in the 1870s. As the oldest tequila distillery in existence, visitors can witness where tequila originated.

This historic site is much more than tequila, though. Tours include visiting the original getaway tunnels that were constructed during the Cristero War so workers could escape the hacienda. After exploring the land, a guided tequila tasting, lunch, and a traditional mariachi show, it’s back on the train to Guadalajara.

Private Tours

If you’re looking for a more intimate, local experience and have a small group, The Agave Experience tours are very well-regarded. All Agave Experience tour guides are local to Tequila, Mexico. This tour prides itself on taking visitors to local, non-commercial spots, exposing you more to the local lifestyle and culture than other tours do.

Four tour guides make up a small yet mighty team that has deep tequila expertise; they’ve each studied for more than 500 hours to earn their Master of Tequila Processes degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara. Only 70 people in the world hold this degree, so you know you’re in good hands at The Agave Experience.

For those staying in Guadalajara and looking to get a taste of the town of Tequila, a private day trip would be a great addition to any vacation. Guadalajara’s private tours offer individualized itineraries for tours that are customized to your interests. With options for tequila tasting experiences at independent, local distilleries, dine in the Tequila Village Market or explore the Tequila town square.

These private day tours allow you to experience more than just the spirit that put Tequila on the map and are perfect for those who want just a taste of tequila.

Beyond the Spirit

I know, I know. Tequila this — tequila that. Does it ever end?

Even though Tequila is known for its spirit, not everything in town has to involve alcohol. There are many great options for those who don’t drink and/or those who simply want to learn more about the culture.

For the ultimate tequila education, visit the National Tequila Museum in the Tequila Town Hall. Located in one of the most historic buildings in Tequila, designed as a typical manor house of the ruling class of the 19th century, the National Tequila Museum brings you back in time to Tequila’s origin. Five permanent exhibits explain the history of Tequila, including cultivation and farming, industrial processes, and how tequila became a staple in Mexican culture.

The Tequila Volcano is a great adventure for those who enjoy hiking, camping, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Open year-round, trails on the volcano allow visitors to explore nature and discover native species. The Tequila Volcano is also an adventurous way for explorers to escape the Mexico heat, as it’s always cold at the top of the volcano;  wind temperatures can reach close to 0 degrees Celsius.

If you’re looking to cool off but want to stay a little closer to sea level, put on your walking shoes and chase waterfalls at Cascada Los Azules. This waterfall is about 70 meters tall and is active all year round. For those looking for a little more adventure around the falls, make sure to look into the private canyoning and rappelling adventures available.

Patron Tequila Distillery Tour

Distilleries , Mexico , Tequila

Patron is one of the biggest names in tequila, and seems to have been around forever. It’s surprising to discover, then, that in 2019 it will only be celebrating its 30th anniversary – a baby compared to some tequila distilleries.

Exterior of the Patron Tequila Distillery.

The company was founded in 1989 when two business entrepreneurs, John Paul Dejoria and Martin Crowley, fell in love with tequila and decided to make the best tequila possible. They succeeded, and their company, Patron (‘the good boss’), became the first to make an ultra-premium tequila, a category which previously didn’t exist.

Exterior of the Patron Tequila Distillery.

Back then it was rare for any exported tequila to be made from 100% blue agave plants. The good stuff that was produced tended to stay in Mexico, and the rougher stuff was exported. This gave tequila a bad rep in the spirits world at the time, especially in the USA where most of the exports went. Patron changed all that, though it took a long time for drinkers to realise that tequila could be as sophisticated and complex as any other spirit.

The entrance hall at the Patron tequila distillery.

In Patron’s first year they made 12,000 bottles and sold them for a whopping $37 each. That’s the equivalent of $75 in today’s money. But they did sell, and today at its distillery on the edge of the little town of El Nacimiento in Jalisco, Patron employs 1600 people as our guide Mariana Sanchez explains.

Barrels in the entrance hallway of the Patron Tequila Distillery

‘We have 400 people working in the bottling plant,’ Mariana says, ‘where everything is done by hand as it has been since we started. We could mechanise it tomorrow and have the whole thing taken care of by about 10-12 people and computers, but we cannot put 400 people out of work. We are part of the local community, and we look after each other. We would also lose our traditions.’

The Tahona Maceration Process seen on a tour of the Patron Tequila Distillery

Although it’s a relatively new company, Patron likes to use traditional methods. One of these is to crush the cooked agave using the tahona process, which only a handful of distilleries do. The tahona is a large circular piece of volcanic stone which is turned like a millstone and separates the juice from the fibre before fermentation. Patron has ten tahona pits in five separate parts of their huge distillery, and they are working constantly in what is a labour-intensive process.

In each of the five tahona areas they also have eleven copper pot stills. Six are tall and skinny, for the first distillation, and five are shorter and rounder, for the second distillation.

Before maceration the agave are cut into even pieces, for cooking.

Chopping blue agave on a tour of the Patron Tequila Distillery

‘They cook for 79 hours,’ Mariana says. ‘Not 78, not 80, but exactly 79 hours. We find that 79 hours gives us the best results. We don’t own the agave fields, but we work with people who have been growing agave for generations.’

Chopping blue agave on a tour of the Patron Tequila Distillery

What makes Patron unusual, though, is that as well as the tahona process they also use the more modern roller mill process to separate juice and fibre from some of the blue agave plants. Their original Patron Silver is a blend of tequilas from the two processes, although their Roca Patron, introduced in 2014, is a more artisanal tequila which uses only the ancient tahona process.

Oaxaca Sacred Mexcal Experience

At Patron the tasting is definitely an education. We’re given glasses containing two tequilas at 55% ABV, one made using the tahona process, the other by the roller mill process. Two more glasses contain tequilas at 40% ABV, again made using the two maceration processes. We’re invited to taste the difference in the results.

At 55%, the roller mill tequila is predominantly alcohol and agave. Cleansing the palate and trying the same tequila but made using the tahona process, the alcohol is much less evident, making it easier to drink. It’s the exact same alcohol content, but it tastes less strong and is more flavourful.

The 40% tequilas are the same as the 55% tequilas but diluted to a more conventional strength using distilled water. The differences between the roller mill and the tahona tequilas are still evident, with the tahona being more complex and easier still to drink. It’s not that one is better than the other, we’re told. They’re simply different and will appeal to different palates.

The Tahona Maceration Process seen on a tour of the Patron Tequila Distillery

We’re then asked to combine the two 40% tequilas to effectively make our own Patron Silver, which is a blend of both processes. The result is different yet again, and probably the tastiest of all. It is smoother than either of the two tequilas on their own, with a slightly sweet taste and hints of the earthy agave and the tang of citrus fruits.

Later we do another fascinating comparison tasting, this time of tequilas aged in some of the different barrels that Patron uses. The first has been aged for eight months in used American oak whiskey barrels. It’s a bright, golden colour, with both the nose and the palate having touches of wood and vanilla from the barrels, along with the tequila’s own citrus and agave. This one they recommend for margaritas.

Tasting glasses on a tour of the Patron Tequila Distillery

Next up – or down – is tequila aged for 5.5 months in French Allier oak barrels, which is a tight-grain oak. Even though it spends less time in the barrel than the first, it is a deeper colour because of the type of wood. There’s more wood on the nose and in the mouth, too, but with sweeter fruit tastes, like peaches rather than citrus.

Third choice is an American and French oak hybrid, aged for 17 months. It spends twice as long in the barrel as the first sample, but emerges a similar colour because the barrels are older and give less colour to the tequila. There’s more sweet vanilla to the taste, alongside the agave, lime and lemon notes.

Finally is a tequila aged for twelve months in wide-grain French Limousin oak barrels, the kind used for ageing cognac . It has more colour than the previous sample, more wood and less vanilla, and instead of citrus the aroma and taste is of pears and apples.

It’s a fascinating tasting experience, showing off the complexities of making tequila, and the almost infinite variations possible.

Barrels on a tour of the Patron Tequila Distillery

Inbetween the two tastings we were shown an unexpected side of the distillery – its recycling area. I’d discovered the importance of recycling when I’d visited the Altos Distillery earlier in the week. At Patron they have a composting area which is the size of seven soccer fields, and they use a reverse osmosis system to recycle 70% of the waste water. The remaining 30% goes to the compost area. The compost is used in the attractive gardens around the distillery, and to help grow vegetables used in the kitchens at Hacienda Patron, their private guesthouse for special visitors.

Bush outside the Patron Tequila Distillery.

Some of their 1600 employees work at the Hacienda, and as we walk round we see some of the yellow American ex-school buses which bring in the workers for their different shifts, and take them home again. I think back to the bottling plant where some of the 400 people were clearly enjoying themselves, listening to music, gossiping, laughing, as they put the labels on the bottles by hand and did other jobs that could be done by machine. Good for Patron, for keeping the machines out and the people in work, and it’s also nice to know that by buying Patron Silver you’re helping the economy of this small town in Jalisco.

For more information visit the Patron website where you can do an amazing virtual distillery tour. No tastings, unfortunately, so have your own bottle of Patron ready!
