Of course the town has a large marina used by commercial fishing boats and pleasure craft. There you can simply go and watch what is going on, hire a boat for the day, take a tourist boat down the coast for a couple of hours or go diving.

And if you’re in the port during the winter you may be lucky enough to see Trini, a tuna that comes to the port looking for scraps of fish. Watch the video below, it’s simply amazing!

L’Escala Costa Brava Things To Do & See

L’escala costa brava spain travel guide.

By  Jackie De Burca  – Follow  Jackie on Twitter

L’Escala is a charming fishing village that sits on one of the “ most beautiful bays in the world ”, according to UNESCO. Lined with beautiful, sandy beaches, somehow the traditional Catalan town has eluded the onslaught of tourism you’ll find in some other spots along the Costa Brava. An hour and a half from Barcelona and less than an hour from Girona ’s International airport, the quiet town offers a secluded Mediterranean retreat that’s also easily accessible.

tourist info l'escala

When the Greeks and Romans came to Catalonia, they first made their settlements at L’Escala, and it’s little wonder why. The bay of Roses forms an ideal natural harbour for the town and provides unusually sandy beaches for the usually rugged Costa Brava coast. Today, visitors can enjoy both natural beauty and relics of the area’s past. Discover the hidden gems of this picturesque Catalan fishing village.

L’Escala is in many ways a simple, traditional fishing village, like you would find all along the coastline a hundred years ago. However, the town is also renowned throughout Spain for one thing: anchovies. For fans of the piquant little fish, you can’t beat a plate of the local delicacy, served up at any one of many beachside terraces. In addition to the anchovy factories, which offer fascinating tours, visitors to L’Escala can see ancient ruins, several unusual museums, and of course the exquisite local beaches. Also there is an Anchovy Gastronomic Festival!

Whatever you do in l’Escala, don’t forget to simply take a quiet stroll along the coastline. Whether during the day, at dusk or after the stars come out, few sights can compare with the calm found along the shore. Things To Do Architectural Interest

Carrer d’en Enric Serra 1, 17130 L’Escala

The three-story, hipped roof house fronts on town streets on three sides, making it easy to take in its impressive stone façade. Today, most of the lower storey is taken up by shops and local businesses. Alfolí de la Sal

Carrer Alfolí 6, 17130 L’Escala

This impressive structure, built between the 16th and 17th century, was formerly the storehouse for the salt that formed the backbone of L’Escala’s local economy. These kinds of warehouses were created by King Philip II in 1564, as part of his monopoly in the salt trade. Torre d’en Montgó

Punta Montgó, 17130 L’Escala

This stout, cylindrical watchtower was built in 1598 by King Philip II as a protective structure for the town of L’Escala. Standing on the promontory just south of Montgó Bay, it remains in magnificent condition and offers spectacular views of the coast. Can Panxo

L-Escala-Sant Marti d-Empuries-1 Sunday Market – Mercat del Diumenge

Plaça Víctor Català, 17130 L’Escala

L’Escala’s traditional Sunday market is the best place to discover local produce and specialties. Pick up an iconic jar of the village’s famed anchovies or try a local variety of cured meat or sausage, available from many local farmers. A smaller number of stalls also offer antiques and curiosities: ideal for unusual souvenirs. Solés Anchovy Factory – Solés Fàbrica

Carretera Closa d’en Llop 40, 17130 L’Escala

While it isn’t exactly a marketplace, the Solés anchovy factory is one of the highlights of a cultural tour of L’Escala, and a great place to do a little marketing. Since 1888, the same family has managed the anchovy factory. Today, visitors can take factory tours.

L’Escala aims to be a destination for everyone. In fact, the municipality has the only fully adapted Catalan yacht club to offer the Accessible Sailing activity, designed to offer people with reduced mobility and other disabilities the opportunity to sail.

For a number of years, it has made a great effort to improve the accessibility of public areas. A walk along the promenade, for much of the seven kilometres of coastline, is a totally accessible activity. On one side, the promenade linking Riells to the old town of L’Escala can be covered in a wheelchair, and on the other side, the promenade linking L’Escala to Sant Martí d’Empúries (GR-92) is also fully adapted, with an avenue 2.5 km long running parallel to the beaches of Empúries

Plus there are also mobility scooters for hire – https://www.easyriderlescala.com/?lang=en

Have a lovely time! 🙂

Thanks, Jackie

During summer, most beaches have a lifeguard during the day hours. They are responsible of helping anybody who gets hurt or drowns in the beach and raising a colored flag depending on the state of the beach. Don't swim if there is a red flag, it means it is not safe. Yellow flag means it might be dangerous to swim and green means it is safe. If there is no flag, apply common sense when swimming.

The U.S. issues new travel guidelines, warning that Iran will avenge the killings of senior commanders.

The State Department has barred its employees from traveling to large parts of Israel. Iran has repeatedly vowed to strike back over the deadly bombing this month of an Iranian Embassy complex in Syria.

Several countries including the United States have issued new travel guidelines for Israel and the surrounding region, as the Israeli military said its forces were “highly alert” for a possible Iranian strike in retaliation for the killings of several commanders.

Iran has repeatedly vowed to strike back at Israel over the bombing of an Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus, Syria, this month that killed three generals and four other military officers. An American official said on Friday that Washington expects an attack by Iran against Israel that would be bigger than recent attacks in the long shadow war between the two countries, but not so big that it would draw the United States into war. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday barred its employees from traveling to large parts of Israel, the first time the U.S. government had restricted the movement of its employees in this way since the war in Gaza began more than six months ago.

On Thursday, Britain told its citizens that they “should consider leaving” Israel and the Palestinian territories “if it is safe to do so.” On Friday, India told its citizens “not to travel to Iran or Israel till further notice,” while France advised people not to travel to Israel, Iran or Lebanon and evacuated the families of French diplomats from Iran.

Asked about the U.S. travel warning , Matthew Miller, the State Department spokesman, said at a news briefing Thursday: “We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days.” He declined to provide details about any specific information that prompted the warning.

The new guidelines bar U.S. government employees and their families from traveling to locations outside the Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba metropolitan areas “out of an abundance of caution” until further notice. The State Department said U.S. personnel could move among those areas for personal travel.

The top American military commander for the Middle East, Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, traveled to Israel to coordinate a response to possible Iranian retaliation, U.S. officials said.

“Our enemies think that they will divide Israel and the United States,” the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said in a statement on Friday after meeting with General Kurilla. “They are connecting us and are strengthening the relationship between us.”

If Iran attacks, he added, “we will know how to respond.”

On Thursday, the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that the armed forces were “highly alert and prepared” for any action Iran might take, even as the timing and scale of any response remained unclear. Analysts say that Tehran, which has long used a network of proxy forces to project power across the Middle East, wants to avoid igniting a full-fledged war that could drag in the United States and threaten the survival of Iran’s regime.

“For years, and even more so during the war, Iran has been financing, directing and arming its proxies — in Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Iraq and Yemen — to attack the state of Israel,” he said. “An attack from Iranian territory would be clear evidence of Iran’s intentions to escalate the Middle East and stop hiding behind the proxies.”

Our Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War

News and Analysis

The disappearance and death of an Israeli teenager, whose body was found in the West Bank , spurred deadly rioting by Israeli settlers in Palestinian villages, ratcheting up tensions  even further in the occupied territory.

For months, Western governments have sent weapons to Israel while fending off accusations of abetting war crimes in Gaza. But as an outcry over the civilian death toll mounts, maintaining that balance is becoming increasingly difficult .

Mobilizing the American Left: As the death toll in Gaza climbed, the pro-Palestinian movement grew into a powerful, if disjointed, political force in the United States . Democrats are feeling the pressure.

Riding Rage Over Israel: Jackson Hinkle’s incendiary commentary  has generated over two million new followers on X since October — a surge that some researchers say is aided by inauthentic accounts by the online celebrity.

Psychedelics and Trauma: Thousands of festival-goers were using mind-altering substances when Hamas-led fighters attacked on Oct 7. Now, scientists are studying the effects of such drugs at a moment of trauma .

Turmoil at J Street: The war in Gaza has raised serious concerns within the Jewish political advocacy group about its ability to hold a middle position  without being pulled apart by forces on the right and the left.
