People who love to travel and work in Europe, may wish to secure work in England. The UK Home Office judges most work visas based on a points system of importance, skill and connection. You must be able to prove a good connection to employment in the UK and financial support if you are living with family. Looking for work in England can be difficult, especially if you are not a member of the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA). You should research which visa category you fit into. Once you receive your work visa, you will be able to travel throughout the UK, Europe and other countries. Please note that you may require a Schengen visa if you are a visa national to one of the Schengen countries. The Schengen countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. • You must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid passport.
• You must be a student. You can be either an undergraduate or graduate level student who has completed at least 1 year of study. You cannot take the internship beyond 12 months after your degree completion.
• You must have between $3,000 and $4,000, depending upon if your internship is paid or unpaid, respectively.
• Look on the BUNAC website's internship directory, or try to find 1 on your own. If you find an internship, then you should apply for a BUNAC sponsorship. They take applications on their site all year round. Once you secure a sponsorship, they will help you to get the appropriate visa and insurance.

• To prove that they couldn't fill the job domestically, it must have been advertised for at least 28 days in the UK. The employer must prove that UK workers were given first opportunity to fill the job, but they were unable to find a suitable candidate within the country.
• Alternatively, the job can be listed on the UK shortage occupation list. This list includes, but is not limited to, engineers, social workers, musicians, chief executives, biological scientists, chefs, nurses and physicists. • This type of visa also applies to inter-company transfers and sportspeople.

• If you have this history, you should apply for this type of work visa immediately. You will not be able to switch from a different type of visa application to this.

• Each type of Tier 1 visa requires a different amount of personal funding. Entrepreneurs and investors are required to show proof of a set amount of money in their account.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR UNITED KINGDOM

The United Kingdom is notorious for having one of the strictest borders in the world. Thankfully, Western visitors should have few problems volunteering in the UK. If you’re from the European Union (EU) and want to travel in the UK, you can enter without a visa. You can also do volunteering and paid work in the country without a visa until the country leaves the EU, which at the earliest will be March 2019. But what if you’re outside the UK? Travellers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea can apply for the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme if they’re between the ages of 18 and 30. They also have to meet eligibility requirements. This allows them to take paid and unpaid work in the UK for up to two years. Many foreigners prefer to live and work in the UK long-term if they can secure this visa. It’s relatively easy to get due to reciprocal agreements the UK has with the countries involved. Furthermore, there are large communities of people on these visas in London and Manchester, so you won’t feel alone if you decide to stay here for a while. For travellers from countries like Russia, the US, and South Africa they will have to apply for a Tier 5 (Temporary Worker – Charity Worker) visa. To work and travel in the UK you must have a position with a registered organisation and have full sponsorship from them. Accommodation in London

What type of accommodation can i expect.

• Dormitory-style rooms in Zone 1 (single rooms, twin shares, triple shares and four bed dorms).
• Studio-style rooms in Zone 1.
• Shared housing in Zones 2-3.
• Boutique hotel accommodation.

*Shared housing and Studio-style rooms are in high demand so can be limited in availability.

How do the Zone 1 dormitory-style rooms work?

Our partners have allocated 250 beds in Zone 1 for us, which is the rate between new arrivals and departing travellers. This type of accommodation is centrally located in the heart of London and is an all-inclusive dormitory property. You will be sharing with other Australians and New Zealanders on the Jumpstart, as well as international University Students.

Only one week’s deposit is required to secure your bed pre-departure, and then rent is paid on a weekly basis. Only one week’s notice is required to leave your accommodation.

How does the shared housing work?

We have exclusive access to 20 shared houses and flats in East and West London, all within a 25 to 35-minute commute on the tube to central London.

Features of our shared housing accommodation:

• Rent includes all bills and free wifi.
• Rent paid weekly.
• Only two weeks notice to leave.
• No huge upfront costs - the bond is equal to 2 weeks’ rent.
• No long-term leases or lock-in contracts.
• Not liable to cover rent for other rooms if housemates move out.

Please note: Availability in our shared housing is limited. If this type of accommodation is your preference, you will start in one of the other types of accommodation on arrival (so you’ve got a bed guaranteed for your move-in when you touch down), and then once you are here, you will go on a waiting list. When there is a room available, and it is your turn on the waitlist, the property team will contact you to set up a viewing. You can go check out the room, and if you prefer it to your current accommodation, sign a tenant agreement for the house and make the swap to shared housing.

Why do I need to go on a waiting list for shared housing?

Shared housing is in high demand in London. On average there are about 30 people on a waiting list. You will start the program in our city rooms or the Sir Alfred Hitchcock Hotel, this way, When there is a room available, and it is your turn on the waitlist, the property team will contact you to set up a viewing. You can go check out the room, and if you prefer it to your current accommodation, sign a tenant agreement for the house and make the swap to shared housing.

How does the hotel-style accommodation work?

We partner with a boutique 3-star hotel to provide you with an option for hotel-style accommodation in London. The Sir Alfred Hitchcock Hotel is located in Leytonstone, East London. You can stay in a single ensuite room, or double ensuite room and pay rent on a week-by-week basis. To secure this type of room you must pay your first week of rent pre-departure.

• Kettle in every room with tea/coffee provided.
• Bedding & Towels.
• Cleaner - rooms and communal areas are services regularly.

Are we stuck in long leases?

No, not at all. All of our accommodation options are set up so that you can travel at short notice, with a 1 to 2-week notice period to leave your accommodation.

Will I live close to work?

Absolutely, all of our accommodation options are either in zones 1, 2 or 3 and all within walking distance of London underground stations.

Can I book with a partner or friend?

Yes! Our accommodation is great for not only solo travellers but also friends travelling together. There are twin share and double rooms across all of our accommodation options, in zone 1, the shared houses and the hotel accommodation.

How do our job guarantees work.

TWHC works with our employment partners to guarantee you a job in London. The job guarantees include hospitality (events, festivals, bar work), labouring event crew and construction.

Features of our job guarantees:

• You will get registered with your guaranteed job during your first week in London, meaning you can start earning straight away.
• All our job guarantees are completely flexible work. There is no locked-in commitment period, or minimum work hours. You can pick and choose the shifts you’d like to do and cancel shifts within a 72-hour notice period. It’s totally flexible, great for travel and while you’re settling into London Life. Hospitality & events catering team.

This role involves working at festivals, concerts, 4 - 5 Star hotels, sports games, trendy restaurants & bars, and other VIP events . You can take on roles ranging from; bar staff, waiting staff, food runners, host & hostess & cloakroom.

No experience is needed, but you will be required to attend an induction (an introduction to Hospitality & Banqueting session) before we can send you to work.

Job Type: Flexible

Location: All around Central London (and outside London for festival work)

Training: Provided

Hours: Work as many hours as you want, and be paid hourly. Early shifts, late shifts, or even doubles. You pick and choose what days you want to work.

Outdoor Events, Crewing and Manual Labour Team

*This position is pending a skills and fitness test on induction day to ensure the applicant can meet the physical demands of the position.

The role involves working at festivals, concerts, sporting events, TV sets and other iconic UK venues (The Royal Albert Hall, The O2, Wembley Stadium, Tower of London and more!).

You will be doing the manual labour for the set up of events, which can include early morning set-ups, late night pack downs and other day events general labouring work. The work is varied - From stage setups to dragging waterproof covering on a football pitch to unloading stage equipment or putting up street barriers.

No experience is needed, but you will be required to take a skills and fitness text on induction day to ensure you can meet the physical demands of the position.

General Construction Labouring

General labouring jobs across Central London, assisting trades on construction sites. This is a Monday-to-Friday job, so if you are not keen on evening and weekend work, this one is for you.

*This position requires you to be physically strong and fit.

Location: All around Central London

Hours: Monday to Friday day shifts. Flexible work, accept shifts as you like.

Is the job travel-friendly?

Yes, all our guaranteed job opportunities are completely travel-friendly.

What sort of work will I be doing as part of the hospitality events team?

This is the best part about the job as it is so diverse. One day you could be waiting at a corporate function at one of London's top 5 star hotels, the next day you could be serving wine at a VIP celebrity party. You could be working at a luxury brand product launch as well as huge concerts at London's biggest arenas. And of course, being a part of the team working at all the best British music festivals throughout the summer. You can take on roles ranging from; bar staff, waiting staff, food runners, host/hostess & cloakroom.

Can I apply for other work while on the Jumpstart London program?

Yes you can. TWHC provides plenty of other job opportunities for you to apply for once you are in London, or you are welcome to try your hand at finding your own job in London. Our job guarantee jobs are flexible in nature so that you can select your shifts around interviews that you would like to attend with other employers and use this job as a fall-back option if you want to explore other opportunities while you're on your working holiday.

I have tattoos and piercings that I don’t want to take out, what are my options?

Our Events Hospitality work is suitable for those with tattoos and piercings.

What are the additional employment opportunities?

In addition to our job guarantees, TWHC works with a range of other employers to offer you additional employment options. These are not guaranteed and depend on availability and a successful application and interview.

Some of our additional job opportunities include:

• Restaurant-based work - Bar, food runner, waiter/waitress, host/hostess roles available.

What is a UK Youth Mobility Visa?

• The UK Youth Mobility Visa allows 18 - 35 year olds you to work in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland for a 2-year duration from the date you enter the United Kingdom. After two years, you have an option to extend your visa for another year.
• You are permitted to leave and re-enter the UK any number of times within this period.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Youth Mobility Visa?

To be eligible for the Youth Mobility visa, you must meet the following requirements:

• 18-35 years of age (at the time of application).
• Hold a valid Australian, New Zealand or Canadian passport.
• No criminal convictions in the last twelve months.
• Must have no children in your care.
• Be planning to arrive in the UK in the next 6 months.
• You will require 10 working days in the UK to collect a Biometric Card.
• Proof of funds £2530 available (you need a bank statement that shows that these funds have been in your account for at least 28 days consecutively at the time of application).

What are the processing times for a UK Youth Mobility Visa?

Processing times for the Visa can vary from 4-6 weeks so you will need to leave sufficient time to apply before your intended travel dates.

How far in advance should I apply for my UK Youth Mobility Visa?

• We recommend you apply at least 2 months before you intend to travel.
• There is a fast-track service however the British High Commission charges an additional fee for this.
• Once your Visa is granted, your passport will be returned to you with an entry clearance stamp for a 30-day duration, from the date you have chosen in your application.
• You will then be required to enter the UK within this period and pick up what is called your Biometrics Residency Permit.

What does the UK Youth Mobility Visa cost?

Your Visa Fees are payable to the British High Commission and include:

• Visa Application £298 GBP.
• Immigration Healthcare Surcharge (IHS) £1552 GBP.
• Visa Application Fee £298 GBP.

Potential additional costs:

• Applications from Brisbane, Canberra, or Perth, will incur an additional fee of $105 AUD to book your biometrics appointment.
• If you choose to have your passport couriered then this will cost $24AUD. You can however opt to pick this up from your appointment location centre.

These fees are non-refundable if your application is unsuccessful. In 2017 over 40% of first-time applicants were rejected because of simple omissions and commonly made mistakes. Because the Visa application is entirely computer-processed, applications can be rejected for errors as small as an incorrect date on a bank statement.

What if I have UK heritage in my family?

Is it true that the 2-year Visa is now a 3-year Visa?

The UK Youth Moblity Visa is still a 2 - year visa, but you now have the opportunity to extend it for an extra year when you're over there. Once you have under 6 months left on your current Visa you can apply to extend your Visa for an extra year thus turning it into a 3-year Visa. which you must do whilst you're in the UK.

How much does it cost to extend my 2 year UK Youth Mobility Visa to 3 years?

In order to extend your Tier 5 YMS Visa, you will need to pay:

• the £298 application fee +
• the £776 immigration health surcharge

General Questions

How many spots are available.

Jumpstart London has a fixed intake calendar with a maximum of 15 new arrivals per week from February to November. January and December are traditionally blocked out.

We have 33 intake sessions in year.

What do I need to get started?

You need to provide an estimated arrival week and month so that we can check our availabilities before you sign up. This can be changed as often as you like, however, once you have committed to a deposit payment for a room you will be locked in on those days.

Will I be able to work with my partner or friend?

Yes you can as long as the employment opportunities you're going for is suitable for both of you. For example, our events crewing work and general labour is not suitable for those who are unable to lift heavy equipment.

Do I have to use your accommodation?

No but it is recommended to have a room on arrival to start with so that you can view other accommodation without any pressure.

What are important dates that I need to be aware of? Is there a recommended time to arrive?

You can start with us on the Jumpstart London program anytime between February to November.

Here is a breakdown of the year:

January - blocked out; we do not have any partners offering job guarantees to arrivals for January. However, if you do want to arrive in January, you can move into the accommodation and enjoy your time in London; work commences in early February.

February & March - February and March are a great time to arrive if you want to settle into London life before the weather starts heating up, work starts getting busy and Summer mode goes into full swing. Work is not quiet but it has not hit peak season yet. If you want to do festival work, please know it doesn’t begin until June.

April & May - The days are longer and work through our guaranteed jobs is buzzing (think celebrity events, the biggest sporting games & concerts). HOT TIP - April & May are a great time to go travelling if you want to avoid the peak summer crowds and prices.

June, July, August - These are TWHCs favourite months to be in London and travelling Europe. Jampacked with exciting work opportunities such as concerts (Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Nickelback, Doja Cat) and festivals (Kaleidoscope, All Points East, British Summer Time and more!). This is in addition to weekly shifts at some of London’s most iconic sites: Harrods, Selfridges, Natural History Museum, V&A and the National Gallery.

September, October & November - if you’re planning on spending the Summer travelling before moving to London, these months are perfect to settle into London life after your Euro Summer. There is plenty of work available. HOT TIP - These shoulder seasons are another great time to go travelling if you want to avoid the peak summer crowds and prices.

December - All work available on the Jumpstart London, indoor and outdoor events, and labour work will slow down towards the second last week of December. Very few of our partners would be looking to hire new starters in December; most will pre-hire a few months in advance for staff that is needed over the Christmas break, You are better off arriving at the end of January/Early February.

We recommend something other than December or January for arrival months if you need to start work immediately.

Accommodation availability, on the other hand, heaps of rooms become available over the Christmas break as a lot of people travel or head home for Xmas.

Festival Work

What is the festival work and how can i do it.

The festival work is included in our Hospitality Events work (one of your guaranteed job options). This work is app-based where you pick and choose your shifts based on your own availability.

Throughout the year this work involves working at VIP events, sports stadiums, museums, and galleries. During the Summer months there is a range of festival and concert work available. Including:

When you are working at a festival that is outside of London for several days in a row - you will likely be provided with free camping accommodation. The rates for the work range upwards of £12.50, and there is no commitment period, you could just work one festival if you like.

Live-in jobs are when your employer provides your accommodation (usually on-site) for a discounted price. We have a range of live-in hotel and bar jobs all over the UK.

How can I swap to a Live-In job?

All participants should start our program in London. Your first job guarantee and housing guarantees are offered in London.

However, after you’ve started in London and have set up all your UK life admin with our support team, you’re welcome to switch to a live-in job. You can do this at any point during your visa. Our support team will advise you on the current availabilities and set you up for an interview.

Our live-in hotel jobs and live-in bar jobs are offered based on availability and a successful interview outcome.

Can I apply for a live-in job pre-departure?

If there are spots available that coincide with your arrival date, then yes you can apply for a live-in role pre-departure.

Some jobs have no fixed place of work. These are often jobs where the employee spends a lot of time visiting customers or clients. People who do this work are sometimes known as 'peripatetic workers'.

• teachers who work at different schools over the working day
• travelling salespeople

Travel between home and work is likely to count as working time for peripatetic workers. This is because during this time, the person is classed as doing work for their employer – for example, the employer may change or add tasks.

When travel time counts as working time, the pay an employee gets depends on the terms of the employment contract. 

When calculating pay the employer must follow the law on the National Minimum Wage. It includes different rules on how working time affects minimum wage calculations.

So how do you even get a job abroad ? Well, you’ll want to start by finding the destinations where you can legally work abroad and then start your job search. Or, you can find a job that allows you to work abroad, and they will often sponsor your work visa.

You can also get a job overseas with no experience ! In fact, teaching English abroad is the perfect job in that particular scenario. However, if teaching isn’t your true calling, you can either apply for international positions while still at home, or apply for a work visa abroad and figure things out once you arrive.

Here’s how to get a job abroad:

• Choose a destination. Places like Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland grant Working Holiday Visas to citizens of certain countries and who meet an age requirement. If you want to work abroad for a year or permanently, then you’ll want to secure a job offer prior to applying for work visas abroad.
• Choose your field. Sometimes, it’s easier to figure out what kind of job you want prior to choosing the destination. The demand for certain positions is higher in some countries than others, which will make your job search a lot easier (or more challenging).
• Apply to open job opportunities. Once you know where you want to go and what kind of job you want overseas, then it’s time to start applying to work abroad programs! The length of this process will vary depending on your qualifications and prior experience, and perhaps even your proficiency in the local language. 
• Apply for a work visa. Once you find your job, then you can apply for a work visa. Most likely, you’ll need to show proof of a job offer in order to qualify. There should be someone at your new workplace who is in charge of assisting you with planning your trip abroad.

What are the best types of jobs abroad?

The best types of jobs abroad depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Do you want to only work for room and board? WWOOFING is for you. Are you okay with working odd jobs here and there in order to fund your travels around the world? EU proposes youth mobility agreement with UK to help youngsters travel, work and live in both areas

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Commission proposed Thursday to start negotiations with the United Kingdom to allow young people to move freely, work and study in both regions after Brexit — the U.K.'s departure from the EU four years ago.

According to the EU, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU following a referendum in 2016 has damaged mobility between the two areas.

“This situation has particularly affected the opportunities for young people to experience life on the other side of the Channel and to benefit from youth, cultural, educational, research and training exchanges,” the Commission said.

When the U.K. was still a member of the economic and political bloc, its nationals had the right to live and work freely in the EU, with reciprocity for EU nationals in the U.K. Under the agreement proposed by the EU’s executive arm, EU and UK citizens between 18 and 30 years old would be eligible to stay up to four years in the destination country.

The deal would also allow equal treatment of EU and UK students in the field of university tuition fees. Most EU students must now pay international tuition fees if they want to study in the U.K. The Commission says these vary between 11,400 and 38,000 pounds ($14,200-$47,300) per year and are a strong deterrent for EU students who generally don’t have to pay as much within the bloc.

The Commission’s recommendation will be discussed by EU member countries who must give the green light before the executive arm can start negotiations with the UK.

“We have successful Youth Mobility Schemes with 13 countries, including Australia and New Zealand, and remain open to agreeing them with our international partners, including EU member states,” the British government said in a statement.

The U.K. has its own Youth Mobility Scheme, which it has offered to some EU member states. The Commission believes the British plan is less ambitious than its own proposal.

“Our agreements provide a valuable route for cultural exchanges providing partner countries are also willing to offer the same opportunities for young British people,” the British government added.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Sunak rejects offer of youth mobility scheme between EU and UK

Labour also turns down European Commission’s proposal, which would have allowed young Britons to live, study and work in EU

Rishi Sunak has rejected an EU offer to strike a post-Brexit deal to allow young Britons to live, study or work in the bloc for up to four years.

The prime minister declined the European Commission’s surprise proposal of a youth mobility scheme for people aged between 18 and 30 on Friday, after Labour knocked back the suggestion on Thursday night, while noting that it would “seek to improve the UK’s working relationship with the EU within our red lines”.

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , suggested the scheme, which would also have allowed young people from within the EU to stay in the UK to work or study for the same period of time, would have been an area in which there could be “closer collaboration”.

“The topic of youth mobility is in both our interests, because the more we have youth mobility being on both sides of the Channel, the more we increase the probability we will be on good terms because the next generation knows each other very well,” she said on Thursday.

But the UK government indicated on Friday that Brexit had ended free movement and it had no desire to reopen that conversation, even with strict conditions on length of stay.

“We are not introducing an EU-wide youth mobility scheme – free movement within the EU was ended and there are no plans to introduce it,” a government spokesperson said.

However, they did note that the government would be happy to do deals with individual member states. It is known that the UK is keen to strike an arrangement with France.

One source said the UK wanted to “cherry-pick” which countries it wanted such programmes with.

The youth mobility scheme would not be a return to freedom of movement and would, if agreed, require a YMS visa, evidence of sufficient funds to sustain a living and health insurance.

The Conservatives have been urged to rethink their rejection of the offer because it could help boost the economy.

Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “Expanding our existing youth mobility visas to cover European countries on a reciprocal basis would be a win-win.

“It would be a much needed boost to our economy, especially hospitality and tourism; it would offer great new opportunities to young British people to work abroad; and it would be a crucial step towards fixing our broken relationship with Europe.

“Of course, the details would need to be negotiated, but no UK government should reject this idea out of hand.”

Some Labour MPs believe the scheme could have helped Labour reach its plan to decarbonise UK power by 2030.

A senior Labour MP likened the scheme to a “sugar-rush, fast-fix” solution that would be helpful to an incoming Labour government but would be hard to wean off. They said: “Even though Labour has reduced its green objectives, it still wants to decarbonise the grid. There will be a time lag between training, recruitment and reskilling workers that would require an army of engineers for example to do that, and we’re currently far behind.

“To hit the ground running, this scheme offers us the opportunity to do that, but we would have to continue to fix labour market shortages.”

A Labour spokesperson said: “This is a proposal from the EU Commission to EU member states, not to the UK. It has come about because the UK government is reportedly approaching other European countries to try to establish mobility arrangements.

“Labour has no plans for a youth mobility scheme. We have already suggested some tangible ways that we would look to improve the relationship and deliver for British businesses and consumers, including seeking a veterinary agreement to tackle trade barriers, mutual recognition of professional qualifications and improved touring opportunities for artists.”

Anand Menon, a professor of European politics and foreign affairs at King’s College London and director of UK in a Changing Europe, said: “Clearly there is a debate to be had about the costs and the benefits of a youth mobility scheme, but I find it utterly depressing that both of the major political parties, one of which will form a government after the next election, do not know the difference between free movement and a limited youth mobility scheme which involves visas.”

He said he suspected the surprise emergence of a youth mobility scheme was a move to head off cherry-picking in the EU in the face of a surge of far-right parties, some of which are Eurosceptics.

“They are scared that member states will do bilateral deals, which becomes more of a threat the better the Eurosceptic parties do in the elections,” Menon said.

Travel Department to work with more agents ‘strategically’ across UK

A tour operator which began working with travel agents a year ago says it hopes to build more trade relationships “strategically across the UK” after sales surpassed expectations.

Travel Department, which specialises in guided group holidays, initially started to work with Barrhead Travel Group in Scotland and other regions of the UK a year ago. This was followed by a partnership with Oasis Travel in northern Ireland and selected Aito Agents in England.

UK general manager Stephen Mills said the decision to sell through travel agents saw the escorted tours specialist’s sales rise beyond expectations. He credited agents’ expertise and customer care as well as being available in a new route to market for the increase.

Mills said: “We intentionally partnered with a limited number of select travel agents as we did not want to spread ourselves too thinly and to allow for those new agents to get to know our brand, values and product.

“We didn’t want our partners forced to compete with multiple agents all selling the same proposition.”

The operator offers price parity and said it now hoped to increase its trade partnerships further.

For 2024, the operator has added new partners including Ramsay Travel, Spear Travels and Club World Travel. It plans to take four Barrhead Travel agents to Tuscany next week for the company’s first ever agent fam trip. Travel Department also recently became an associate member of the Scottish Passenger Agents Association (SPAA).

Mills said: “We are working strategically on building our agency partnerships across the UK without compromising on the relationships we already have in place. We appreciate and understand the value and service travel agents offer and have already seen significant levels of growth for 2024.”

Agents who work with Travel Department receive bespoke marketing and promotional materials and regular social media content to send out to clients.

Its guided group holidays include river cruises, solos trips, long-haul holidays, city breaks and a new range of ‘Unique Small Group’ tours to nearly 200 destinations worldwide. Some of its top sellers short-haul include Italy, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and long-haul include India, Canada, South Africa and China.

It claims to offer among the broadest range of guided group holiday destinations out of northern Ireland and Scotland and some of the best value new alternatives from London.

How the €1 European house scheme actually works

In a bid to attract people to the area, a French town is selling a house for just €1 (the British equivalent of just 85p).

Nestled in the depths of the French countryside , the property is found in Saint-Amand-Montrond, close to the city of Bourges, which is famous for its half-timbered houses.

Interested? The property has two bedrooms, as well as a living room, kitchen, toilet, a larger bathroom, a courtyard and a garage.

As ever though, there is a catch. The house isn’t exactly in pristine condition, so if you’re on the lookout for a doer-upper , this’ll be right up your street.

It hasn’t been lived in for 12 years, and as such, the local town hall estimates that the renovations will come at a cost – to the approximate tune of €127,800 (£109,000).

However, all hope is not lost, for the cost of the renovation will be subsidised by the town itself, as confirmed by local urban planning delegate François Blondieau in daily newspaper Ouest-France.

Want to live out your chic French dream? Applications to buy the house opened on April 1, and are set to close on June 15.

You can pay the property a visit from May 15 until the deadline and, if successful, you’ll be expected to sign the deeds in January 2025 with the view to completing work by July 2028 – just in time for your summer holiday.

Why are Italy and France selling houses for €1?

There’s a reason European countries are selling off houses for so little .

In Saint-Amand-Montrond, it’s because the town is trying to attract more permanent residents. At present, just over 9,000 people live here, so it’s relatively quiet.

There have been similar cases in Italy, where places like Taranto, Pettineo, Pratola Pelinga , Sant’Elia a Pianisi and Sambuca di Sicilia have offered up €1 house purchase schemes over the last few years.

The reasons are the same as in France: to encourage people, particularly younger generations, into the local area to stabilise the population.

France and Italy aren’t the first European countries to try this scheme: in January 2024, news broke that the riverside village of Legrad in northern Croatia was attempting to sell a house for just 11p .

Legrad, the pint-sized town in question, has seen a gradual decline in inhabitants over the past 100 years.

The beauty spot in northern Croatia now has a population of just 2,000 – so has launched various home-buying initiatives over the years to whip up interest in the area.

After the success of the first scheme in 2018, the government announced a new wave of houses that were put on the market for less than a packet of crisps.

Who is eligible to buy a €1 house in Italy or France?

With this particular French house, the property is only open to those who intend to make it their main (and only) residence.

So, if you already own a home in another country and want to make this your second, your application likely won’t be successful.

Rules can differ between towns, but as was seen with a recent scheme in Mussomeli in Sicily, Italy , buyers needed to: demonstrate the ability to support expenses for the renovation of the property; prepare a project for the renovation within one year of purchase; start work within two months of the building permit being issued; and put down a deposit of £5,000 that they would lose if the work did not go ahead within the three-year time period.

As the scheme is intended to attract more permanent residents, the idea is that you’ll spend most of your time here integrating with the local community.

This ethos is largely also the case in other areas, as seen in northern Croatia earlier this year, with the schemes also hoping to boost tourism in the area as a new generation of homeowners stimulates the local economy, buying from local shops and investing money in local venues.

Likewise, prospective owners of the Saint-Amand-Montrond property will need to commit to staying for 10 years, on top of shelling out for a decent amount of the renovations. No impulse buying: you’ll need to be in it for the long-haul.

What you can (and can’t) do with the property

As previously stated, you’ll need to show a decent commitment to the area: in Saint-Amand-Montrond, you’ll need to stay for at least 10 years and show willing (both in terms of finances and enthusiasm) to do up your property.

If you have any grand plans, you’ll likely need to communicate these to the municipality. But beyond that, if you want to paint the walls of your kitchen bright pink, then go for it.

How Brexit affects your purchase

Following the UK’s exit from the European Union , UK citizens are no longer permitted unlimited access to live and work in the EU. Beforehand, Brits could work and travel abroad with largely the same rights as in the UK, but now, there are tougher restrictions.

The 90-day rule means that, if you have a British passport but no visa, you can only spend 90 days out of a 180-day period in the EU. That applies to both work and leisure, so you won’t be exempt because you spent 89 days at work and want a few extra days for the beach.

This rule doesn’t reset if you return to the UK with the intention of flying straight back to the EU, either.

A CRUISE ship worker has revealed the same mistakes new passengers always leave the crew fuming.

Birmingham native Lucy Southerton, 28, frequently offers tips on how guests and other crew members can make the most of their time onboard.

In a recent video, she discussed some of the most typical mistakes that novice "cruisers" make and how to avoid them on her YouTube channel, Cruising as Crew, to which she has more than 67,000 subscribers.

Lucy started out by saying that the first error she sees novice cruisers make is that they don't properly budget because they "treat a cruise like an all-inclusive holiday."

She said: "If some people have solely done all-inclusive holidays , they make the mistake of thinking a cruise vacation is very similar to that.

"So a lot of people do not budget for extra expenses while they are on board because they have the misconception that most things will be free.

While some of this is true — the majority of your meals is included in the buffet and dining area — Lucy pointed out that there will be additional-cost activities and restaurants.

The nine-year cruise veteran also warned viewers of the gratuity cost, which some first-time cruisers might not be aware of, MailOnline reports.

It is crucial to budget for this so that you won't be short on cash when your vacation is almost over, she said.

Lucy said: "With a lot of cruises, you get hit with the gratuity bill at the end, which I have also seen a lot of people not budget for."

She admitted: "I think we can all have the attitude of, it's never going to happen to me, I'm never going to be on a cruise ship that gets in an emergency. 

"While I hope to God that is true for you, you just never know.

"As crew members, what we don't want in an emergency is everyone running around panicked because they didn't pay attention in the initial safety briefing so they don't know where their emergency station is."

Lucy added: "If you take nothing else from it, please just know where you have to go in the event of an emergency."
