Tbr® inspection report:, trailfinders edinburgh reviews.
I am so glad I visited today. I was full of trepidation and didn't have a clue in how to organise my trip to India. Jenna is a true professional with great insight and information about this vast country. She put my mind at ease and I'm actually looking forward to the adventure that awaits me.
Normally book holidays myself online but since I was planning a big safari, thought it would be best to get help. Trailfinders were fantastic, Michelle was so helpful and excited for us. We got our visas done by them too, cost a bit extra but it was done right. Highly recommend.
I was a bit overwhelmed with the online stuff but worked it out for myself. The travel insurance was prohibitous. Was put under a bit of pressure to buy it but did not and will shop around for a more reasonable cover.

TUI HOLIDAY STORE REVIEWS
Prior to getting assistance from Lisa, I was considering booking a holiday online. I’m so pleased that I got advice from Lisa to book a ski holiday, she was able to give detailed information on the resorts, best place to stay and restaurants and transfers to the resorts. Lisa helped me plan a great holiday and guided me with important issues that I hadn’t even thought about and helped me book a holiday that caters for a group with various interests and skiing ability. Our holiday is going to be far better from getting the inside knowledge of a travel adviser and I also feel much more confident that everyone is going to have a great holiday.
Thank you so much to Ashley and her amazing team for making the booking of my holiday so easy. Their knowledge and professionalism was absolutely first class. I will most certainly be returning when I am ready to book up again. Thanks team, keep up the good work :)
Gillian was very helpful in understanding our needs and put together a package acceptable to.our group.. She called back to allow us to accept the quote and we completed the booking..Well done Gillian and TUI..

I was very impressed with the service I received from the Travel Company Edinburgh. I now book all my business and leisure travel through these guys as they are often much cheaper than their competitors. The service I received was second to none: a small, friendly staff team who are customer focussed and at the end of a phone whenever you need them. Would recommend!
Very professional staff, easy to talk to, no problem to fix any issues you may have and quality locations and pricing.
Angelina and Brooke are top class. Extremely helpful. Thank you both!

Frequently Asked Questions About Scotland
If you're thinking of visiting Scotland, you might have a few questions. For your convenience we’ve collected the most asked ones so check our FAQs below. You can also find more detailed information in our Scotland Travel Guide and for booking and payment information, see our general FAQ page.
1. Is it safe to visit Scotland?
Yes, Scotland is a safe place to visit. The Scottish people are famously welcoming and hospitable to travellers. Of course, you should take standard travel precautions when in the bigger cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Should you find yourself in an emergency during your stay, you can contact your travel consultant on our 24 hour helpline. If it’s the local emergency services that you need, call 999 from any phone to get in touch with ambulances, fire and rescue, coastguard and the police. For more information about safety in Scotland, check out our travel guide .
2. Do I need a visa to visit Scotland?
Whether or not you need a visa to visit Scotland depends on your nationality and the length of your stay. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian or European citizen, you do not require a visa. You will only need a valid passport.
If you’re from another country, you may need a visa to visit Scotland, unless you have dual UK citizenship status. These nationalities include:
You can answer a couple of quick questions on the UK government website to check if you need a visa .
3. How many days do you need to visit Scotland?
The amount of time you will need in Scotland depends on the attractions and areas you want to visit.
If you want a comprehensive tour, travelling across the country and including many of the Scottish islands, we’d recommend you take two weeks. This ensures you’re not rushing through destinations. Longer tours like this also showcase the best of the coasts, lochs, national parks, and places like the famed Orkney archipelago.
If you’re looking for a shorter stay, but still want plenty of sightseeing, we also have shorter, action-packed tours. These take one week or less and show you the most popular Scottish sights, such as the stunning Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Glenfinnan and more.
4. Can I tour Scotland on my own?
Touring Scotland by yourself is a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and solo travel is an option many of our customers choose. If you’re looking for a flexible road trip where you set the pace and pick out all of the attractions that you want to see, then we’d recommend our top-rated self drive packages .
However, if you want a guide to accompany and teach you about each destination then a private tour would mean the convenience of a personal tour guide at a speed that suits you as well as a local knowledge of hidden gems.
Our solo travellers also come back from our guided small group tours with smiles on their faces and plenty of good memories. With a local guide to lead you and a maximum of 15 fellow explorers, you’ll always have company.
5. What is the best way to travel around Scotland?
This really depends on the type of travel experience you want for your trip. On a guided group tour , you’ll get to experience the sights in the company of like-minded travellers. We have carefully vetted and tested our local suppliers and promise that your tour group will always be small (a maximum of 15) so you receive the best and most personal service.
On the other hand, if you would like to see Scotland privately and at your own speed, then a self drive tour is best. With a rented car you’ll have more opportunities to stop for photos and go to viewpoints that aren’t always noted on the map. You also wouldn’t be bound to time limits and would have the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.
A privately guided tour is the best combination of the two and would see you or your chosen travelling party accompanied by an expert local travel guide where you set the pace as you see fit. You get to enjoy the personal one-to-one travel experience of a small group, but also keep the autonomy of self-drive tours.
6. What side of the road do drivers use in Scotland?
Motorists drive on the left side of the road in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Remember to occasionally check your position in traffic, especially in the countryside where roads are often narrow and winding. For travellers used to driving on the right, we advise booking an automatic transmission car, not a manual, for an easier drive.
7. What is the North Coast 500?
The North Coast 500 (also known as NC500 or the Scotland 500) is Scotland’s answer to Route 66, and is the ultimate Scottish road trip. The route is secluded, taking you along the stunning North Coast and through the Northern Highlands, where you’ll experience the wild and natural beauty of Scotland first hand.
Read our North Coast 500 guide for more information.
8. When is the best time to visit Scotland?
Deciding when to visit Scotland depends on the sights you want to see and the seasons you prefer.
If you want a festive experience or want to celebrate the new year (or in Scotland, Hogmanay) then visit in the winter or autumn seasons for crisp chilly days and possible snowfall, perfect for getting a hot chocolate and going exploring.
If you’re keen to have longer days and see lush green landscapes in a milder climate, then a spring or summer visit is for you. Keep in mind, Scottish weather could often be described as “four seasons in a day”. You can’t always depend on a forecast and should bring along waterproofs just in case.
Read our blog article for detailed info on the best time to visit Scotland .
9. What are the must visit places in Scotland?
Scotland has a wealth of history, architecture and natural beauty so there’s always a great day out to be had and a new area to visit – despite this, we have collected the most visited and highly rated destinations by our travel agents and customers.
The must-visit places in Scotland include:
10. Where is the best scenery in Scotland?
We may be biased but we think there is beautiful scenery across Scotland. Even the drive to your next destination will mean you pass by mountains, lochs and rolling hills. However, the most visited sights are found in the Highlands and islands, and along the coasts. Why not check our recommended Scottish attractions to see what Scotland has to offer?
The best scenery in Scotland includes:
11. Can I customise my tour package?
Our local experts have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to you, ensuring every sight or attraction you visit is one that you won’t forget. When creating packages, we plan routes extensively with this in mind so that our guests see the best of Scotland.
Should there be anything in particular you’re keen to see or areas you want to visit, though, get in touch with us. We can also add extra nights to your itinerary, so you can see more of Scotland. Alternatively, you can request a custom tour and your travel consultant will work with you to create your ideal trip across Scotland.
12. When should I organise my flight tickets?
We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.
Why? Once you’ve been introduced to your travel consultant, you’ll have all the information you need to make informed choices on timings. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.
13. What should I pack to visit Scotland?
In Scotland, it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in one day. So, no matter the season, you should have a range of essential items in your luggage:
An umbrella could be handy, and bird watchers may wish to bring binoculars. You may also need a UK travel adapter, which you can buy at the airport or in Edinburgh shops after you arrive. For more information, read our useful electricity information and packing guide .

What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? A ladies' food and shopping trip across Italy, including Rome, Lake Como, Sorrento, Cinque Terre and Portofino. It was such a fun trip to plan from beginning to end and the ladies enjoyed every minute of it and planned to do it again!
Natalie Thomson

What is your approach to planning bespoke luxury travel? Our role can be so important. Whatever we plan will make for lasting memories and can seal or bond families, love and friendly relationships. It is primarily about listening and understanding what a client wants; their needs, moods and family dynamics.
Saloua Rezgui
What is the most memorable vacation you have planned for a client? I booked a group of 14-16 people on a Uniworld River Cruise, who wanted to include a cycling trip. I researched several companies asking if they would follow our river cruise down the Rhine. There were a lot of components, but it turned out perfect!

The Best Walking Tours in Edinburgh
I never get tired of visiting Edinburgh . I love the enchanting cobblestone streets, the world-class whisky bars, the plethora of free museums, and arty vibe of the city (it’s the inspiration for many, many writers).
It has been Scotland’s capital since the 15th century and has a history that stretches back millennia (humans have been in the area since 8500 BCE). There’s an epic medieval castle, an ancient volcano, the historic Old Town, and the New Town (both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites).
One of the best ways to soak it all up is by taking a walking tour. While ghost tours are some of the most popular here (Edinburgh is supposedly one of the most haunted cities in the world), there are many other tours to experience, from bike tours to food tours to pub crawls.
Here’s my list of the best walking tours in Edinburgh to help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most out of your stay!
Best Overall Tour
Mercat Tours
This family-owned company specializes in a variety of tours of the vaults under the city (a labyrinth of tunnels that were first used as storage and workshop space for businesses in the early 17th century), and it’s the only company to offer vault tours during the day . Adult-only tours include the infamous Canongate graveyard and there are even vault tours designed for kids .
Tours start at 20 GBP.
Best Free Tour
City Explorers
City Explorers runs four different free walking tours daily. Start with the classic Edinburgh Free Tour, on which you’ll see and learn about the main sights, including Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and St Giles’ Cathedral. There’s also a free ghost tour, a free Harry Potter tour, and a free New Town tour as well. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!
While those two are my top recommendations for tours in Edinburgh, here are a few more options to help you make the most of your time here:
1. Secret Food Tours
Food is an important part of every culture. Scotland has all manner of interesting culinary delights, and the best way to learn more about them (while sampling a bunch) is by taking a food tour. Secret Food Tours offers the best one in Edinburgh. On their three-hour classic tour of Edinburgh’s Old Town , you’ll try delicacies like haggis, creamy Scottish cheese, neeps, and tatties (and learn what those even are), as well as enjoy traditional Scottish tea.
If you want to try more local spirits, you can take the Secret Whisky, Gin, & Beyond tour , which includes seven tastings of locally brewed and distilled liquors.
Prices start at 69 EUR.
2. A Wee Pedal Bike Tour
To cover more ground and get out of town a bit, take a bike tour. A Wee Pedal has several different offerings, so you can see more of Edinburgh and its surrounding countryside on two wheels. The most popular tour is the 20-mile loop tour , which circumnavigates the entire city. There’s also a 12-mile version that goes out to the rugged coastline for a more off-the-beaten-path adventure.
While rides are taken at a meandering, comfortable pace, you can also rent an e-bike for an extra 15 GBP if you’re not up for the challenge. You can also book special private tours, including one that ends at a brewery (tasting included), and a mountain bike tour.
Prices start at 65 GBP.
3. City of the Dead Tours
If you’re looking to get genuinely creeped out, take a tour with City of the Dead. They offer several tours that go through the underground vaults . City of the Dead is also the only tour company with access to the ominously named Black Mausoleum and Covenanter’s Prison , some of the most haunted places in the world. These spots are favorites of the Mackenzie Poltergeist, considered one of the world’s best-documented supernatural entities, with hundreds of supposed encounters. It’s one of my favorite tours in the city!
Prices start at 19 GBP.
4. Mountebank Tours
One of TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Things to Do in the UK, the Mountebank Comedy Walk, run by Daniel Downie, an award-winning stand-up comedian, is undoubtedly the most hilarious way to see Auld Reekie (an old nickname for the city). On this tour you’ll laugh and learn not only about Edinburgh but all things Scottish, from culture to history to some famous (and infamous) people. And if you’re lucky, Daniel’s adorable dog Bonnie Prince might even join you.
Prices start at 22 GBP.
5. See Your City
One of the biggest walking tour companies in the UK, See Your City offers several fun tours in Edinburgh. Their best (and most popular) is the Harry Potter walking tour , on which you’ll visit the places that inspired JK Rowling as she penned her famous series (and the café where she did so). You’ll even get sorted into your Hogwarts house and get to test your book and movie knowledge in a quiz to earn points. It’s a super fun tour and a must for Harry Potter fans.
Other unique See Your City tours in Edinburgh include a Cheese Crawl and a True Crime walking tour .
Prices start at 16 GBP.
Edinburgh is a fascinating place. It’s bursting with history and there are tons of walking tours on offer, allowing you to deepen your experience and connect with a local guide who can answer all your questions. Pick one (or several) from the list above and you won’t go wrong!

Book Your Trip to Edinburgh: Logistical Tips and Tricks
Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.
Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
- SafetyWing (best for everyone)
- Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
- Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

WHERE WILL YOU GO ON YOUR BESPOKE TOUR OF SCOTLAND?
Private tours.
✅ Scotland is special for everyone in their own way, and for some, this is truly a trip of a lifetime. Whether you’re here to research old clan links, honeymoon in the great outdoors, orchestrate a family hunt for Nessie or re-enact some Hollywood blockbuster moments with your students, making it personal is sure to be at the top of your priority list.
✅ The Hairy Coo is confident that we can cater to all parties, whether it be for 1 or 100 guests. We work on a flexible pricing structure depending on the time of year you are travelling, the size of your group, the length of your tour and where you would like to go.
✅ If you are interested in discussing a private tour with us, please have a quick read of our brief FAQ section below, tailored specifically for this type of excursion. After you have a better idea of the tours we are able to offer, please fill out a quick inquiry form to provide us with more information outlining what you or your group are looking for….
PRIVATE TOURS FAQ
- Chevron down WHERE CAN I GO ON MY PRIVATE TOUR?
We’re already so confident that our tour portfolio covers the best of Scotland, that we use all of our existing itineraries as the basis for our private tours – all of which can be found on our Coach Tours page.
We use this tour template approach in order to make it easier for our guests to understand what is possible within the time they are in the country. However, that’s not to say we are not able to create a bespoke itinerary for you and your party should you have a clear idea of where you would like to go.
After you submit your initial inquiry below, you will be assigned a personal tour co-ordinator who will be happy to discuss some bespoke amendments to your route that are not possible on our public tours. In the past, we have replaced whisky distilleries tours with gin or beer, included visits to ancestors’ resting places and changed our routes to allow for additional activities. If you want to book something extra, we’ll certainly give guidance on whether it would be possible to incorporate it into your tour.
- Chevron down WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?
Our private tour coordinators go above and beyond in terms of the quality and personality they put into every single one of their excursions. Your tour will be conducted on a sparkling clean, air-conditioned Hairy Coo vehicle which will be kept to a brilliant standard throughout the duration of your tour. Your driver-guide will be one of our most experienced tour guides , whom we trust will keep you smiling from start to finish.
- Chevron down WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED?
We are not able to offer an ‘all-inclusive’ private tour experience, meaning the price given to you will be for your tour and driver-guides services only. Food, accommodation and optional activity expenses such as castle entry fees, ferries and distillery tours are not included in your tour price. Should you wish to add any of these to your itinerary, you will need to arrange payment directly with the supplier. We will always be more than happy to offer advice in regard to additions you would like to make to your tour to make planning as easy as possible.
- Chevron down WHAT IS YOUR AVAILABILITY FOR PRIVATE TOURS?
Our private tours are available throughout the year. However, availability in peak Summer months (June-August) is limited and so 2 months notice is advised to avoid disappointment for your desired dates.
The minimum notice required for any private tour is at least 2 weeks – anything within that time limit may not be possible, especially in Summer.
- Chevron down HOW MUCH DOES A PRIVATE TOUR COST?
Whether it be personal, corporate or educational, all of our private tours are individually priced depending on the needs of the group.
We are not able to offer a price for private excursions until we have an understanding of what vehicle(s) are needed, the duration of the tour and when in the year it will take place.
Time permitting, we are always happy to discuss a deposit scheme, along with incremental payments in the lead up to your trip.

A record-breaking year is projected for Travel and Tourism.
Despite the plethora of daunting challenges faced by the hospitality industry over the past few years, the World Travel & Tourism Council is projecting a record-breaking year for Travel & Tourism in 2024, with the sector’s global economic contribution set to reach an all-time high of $11.1 trillion. According to the global tourism body’s 2024 Economic Impact Research, Travel & Tourism will contribute an additional $770 billion over its previous record, thereby solidifying its stature as a global economic engine, generating one in every 10 dollars worldwide. As the global sector surpasses its pre-pandemic prosperity, 142 of 185 countries are expected to outperform previous national records.
An important sign of this economic prosperity has been the opening of new resorts and hotels throughout the world, along with major renovations. To follow are several examples.
The renovation includes refreshed, expansive guestrooms and suites.
Newport Harbor Island Resort , Rhode Island
Newport Harbor Island Resort, the sole accommodations on Goat Island, is set to open at the end of April following a $50 million renovation. The renovation marks a new era for the former-Gurney’s property, comprised of refreshed, expansive guestrooms and suites, contemporary Spa, re-concepted culinary experiences, meeting spaces and 22-slip marina. Much of the art in the rooms and throughout the hotel was commissioned from local artists, while soft goods were hand-crafted by various New England weavers’ guilds. Instead of focusing on the ubiquitous Gilded Era and sailing communities of Newport, the design team chose to focus on the inherent simplicity of coastal life. Guests and locals will be invited to cozy up in the property’s upgraded culinary outlets, including its full-service restaurant 1639, Torpedo Bar and Lounge, the lobby’s The Bakery and the beloved Pineapple Club.
The resort boasts 70 exquisitely designed guest rooms and suites.
TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo , Indonesia
Slated to debut spring 2024, TA’AKTANA is situated in the scenic town of Labuan Bajo among the enchanting landscapes of Flores island, which is home to one of the world’s highest populations of the endangered Komodo dragons. TA’AKTANA joins The Luxury Collection as Marriott Bonvoy’s first property in the region. The resort spans 16 hectares of pristine terrain and boasts 70 exquisitely designed guest rooms and suites, including overwater villas and family-friendly accommodations with 24-hour butler service. The resort’s Sea Villas offer overwater opulence that will immerse guests in the beauty of the resort’s local surroundings. TA’AKTANA is a destination itself, offering exceptional comfort and amenities. Guests can unwind in expansive pools offering breathtaking views of the Flores Sea, indulge in wellness with rejuvenating treatments or embark on a delectable gastronomic journey.
La Vista offers guests a modern, light and airy dining space.
La Vista at Cameron House , Scotland
Cameron House, the five-star resort on Loch Lomond, Scotland, opened La Vista, a brand new restaurant. La Vista will serve authentic Italian cuisine and boasts panoramic views of the loch. Formerly The Boat House, the acclaimed resort has invested $2 million in transforming the lochside restaurant into a modern, light and airy dining space with a 138-cover restaurant, informal Mercato with a dining area for 50 guests and a private dining room for up to 24 people. An al fresco terrace launching in the summer will provide an additional 120 covers. Open seven days a week, from breakfast to dinner, Head Chef, Mark Pawsey’s main menu celebrates authentic Italian cuisine and features dishes rooted in traditional recipes executed with modern flair. The menu is divided into small aperitivo plates and cicchetti, larger signature mains, handmade pastas and wood-fired pizzas cooked in a Valoriani oven.
The expansive interior of The Rockley features colorful touches.

Opened on March 27, The Rockley, located on the South Coast of Barbados, brings a local vibe and a hip new hotel experience to the Rockley Beach area known for its lively bars, signature restaurants and authentic island experiences. Owned and operated by the Ocean Hotels Group, the Rockley is the reincarnation of the old South Beach hotel. The modern 49-room boutique hotel, an urban chic oasis, was brought to life by Michelle Leotaud of Apple & Iron, a Barbados-based design firm. Rooms at The Rockley feature colorful local touches including playful Bajan sayings on throw pillows, the island’s iconic Bus Stop sign and thoughtful locally crafted amenities that celebrate Bajan culture. The hotel’s new outdoor covered bar area offers a trendy beach club vibe that will feature daily and nightly entertainment. The Rockley has also upgraded and repurposed its reception, pool deck and communal spaces.
Each rooms reflects the island’s natural charm and elegance.
Octant Ponta Delgada , Portugal
Following a series of renovations of the common spaces, Octant Ponta Delgada, located in the Azores on São Miguel Island, launched five new room categories. Among the five newly renovated suite categories, the spotlight shines on a Whale Watching Room, a sanctuary where guests can observe the majestic blue whales with an in-room telescope and private balcony. With panoramic ocean views and thoughtful amenities, including exercise and yoga equipment and a minibar with local products, the new room promises an unparalleled connection with the surrounding nature of the islands. From the Sea View Room, offering stunning vistas of the marina, to the spacious Family Two Bedroom suite, perfect for family getaways, every space reflects the island’s natural charm and elegance.
100 Princes Street is set within the historic former Overseas League.
100 Princes Street , Edinburgh, Scotland
Red Carnation Hotel Collection will open 100 Princes Street, its first Scottish hotel, in spring 2024. Inspired by the adventures and tales of Scottish explorers who once called the building their home away from home, 100 Princes Street is set within the historic former Overseas League, nestled in Edinburgh's cultural heart, a stone's throw from Scotland's National Gallery. With uninterrupted views of Edinburgh Castle, the original building and its iconic features will be respectfully renovated, transforming it into an exclusive retreat on Edinburgh’s most famous street.
