It’s a figurative phrase—it doesn’t literally mean to travel an additional mile.

Go the extra mile is often used in situations in which someone completes the task they were expected to do and more, as in One of my students went the extra mile and composed a song to go along with their book report. 

Example: When I send someone a greeting card, I like to go the extra mile and write my own message inside.

Where does go the extra mile come from?

The first records of the phrase go the extra mile come from around 1900. It’s a reference to a line from Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount in the Bible: “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” Many people interpret it to mean that they should always try to do more than is asked of them.

Interestingly, go the extra mile isn’t the only phrase to come from Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. Earlier in the sermon, Jesus says, “But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” The phrase turn the other cheek comes from this line.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATES When it comes to a travel budget, the impact of currency exchange rates is often underestimated. While many countries will accept U.S. dollars, fluctuations in exchange rates can significantly alter the cost of your trip (especially if you’re exchanging a large amount of money).   

Tip :Use reliable currency conversion apps or websites to stay up to date on the latest exchange rates and compare rates from different providers to get the best deal.

UNEXPECTED MEDICAL COSTS Health emergencies can not only be an unfortunate interruption to your trip, but they can also be financially draining. While travel insurance is a well-known and helpful safeguard, many travelers underestimate the potential medical expenses they could incur in the event of illness or injury.

While it’s obviously important to enjoy your trip, it’s equally important to set a realistic spending limit for extras. Create a separate fund for activities so you can indulge without jeopardizing your overall vacation budget.

Tip : Research and prioritize activities in advance and allocate funds accordingly. In some cases, you can get a discount if you purchase tickets or passes in advance. This way you can indulge guilt-free in the experiences that matter most to you.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION Getting around your destination may seem like a minor expense, but local transportation costs can quickly add up. Whether it’s public transportation, taxis, or rideshare services, it’s crucial to understand how much you might be spending. In some cities, public transportation may offer significant savings, while in others, rideshares like Uber may be more cost effective. Research your options and plan accordingly to avoid surprises or unexpected travel expenses.

Tip : Consider purchasing transportation passes or cards that offer discounted rates for multiple rides. This can be particularly helpful in cities with extensive public transportation networks.  

PASSPORT FEES If you’re traveling internationally, you must have a passport. International passport fees can be expensive, and you also have to factor in the cost for passport photos. If you wait to get your passport and need the process expedited, you’ll pay even more.

Tip: Passports can take 8-11 weeks to deliver, so make sure you plan in advance to avoid late fees.

I offer my clients full service travel planning. Every trip should feel as unique as the person taking it. I especially love planning milestone trips such as family vacations, honeymoons, group getaways and will make sure each detail of your trip is planned to exceed your expectations. 

We have a system to make travel planning as easy as possible for our clients. To understand, we explain each step of the planning process below.

Submit a quick trip request here on our website! We will respond within 24-48 business hours. You will be connected with a travel specialist who will best handle your travel request.  

Deposit includes three quotes and two revisions of quotes.

Please note, if you book with Extra Mile Travel, the deposit will be applied to your reservation.

Now it’s my time to get to work matching the feedback you’ve given me to the right experience and destination for you! I use my expertise and work with destination partners to present your customized itinerary to you. Once everything is perfect, we will then take care of all the arrangements by applying your deposit.

Between the time of booking through departure, our agency works diligently to manage and coordinate the trip's details. We will stay in touch with you to help you prepare and know what to expect through your trip.

Again and again, Tiffany from Extra-Mile travel came through again to schedule and organize a wonderful 5 day cruise for my friend and I. It was short and fun. The highlight of our trip was Bouchard Gardens in Victoria, BC. The only downside was the challenging weather, cloudy, rainy and some fog. But, it didn't ruin our trip. I recently came home from a 7 day tour of Ireland with Globus Tour. Tiffany did a great job of booking it and making sure my trip was organized and planned. She also chose Globus Tours for my trip and it was an excellent choice. I loved Ireland and traveling with Globus Tour. Thank you Tiffany for booking a wonderful vacation for me. It was perfect in all ways.

Tiffany booked a trip for my family and I to go to cancun. We had 7 adults and 4 kids under 5 years old going on the trip. I was nervous being the first time traveling with kids so we decided to book a travel agent hoping things will go smoothly. Because I knew traveling with kids wasn't going to be easy. First off Tiffany was very rude on the phone and wasn't very accommodating to the fact that we had 4 kids with us. She only gave us 3 choices to choose from hotels which I do not understand why we only get 3. 1st was kid friendly but way over priced, 2nd was kind of kid friendly hotel but an hour away from airport (after being on the plane for 5hours and going through customs I do not want to be in the car for another hour) 3rd wasn't to kid friendly but only 15-20mins from airport. Of coarse we choose the closes one from airport. Day of the trip we got to airport to figure out that not only did Tiffany booked all our seats separately she put the kids under people that wasn't even their parents!!! We were confused and the people checking us in were very confused were a couple of people had to help us figure things out. We had to sit separately on the plane which made it VERY hard for my husband and I to help care for both of our kids on the plane ride. The kids were not happy, 5 of the longest hours of my life! Biggest headache after getting off the plane. Then we get to the hotel where we requested Tiffany that we stay in connecting rooms because we were a big group but wanted to be close. We checked in and found that we had 3 rooms all separate in different buildings that was even close to each other. There were no kid clubs, no kids pool, 3 of 6 restaurant kids were not allowed to eat at. If you knew we were traveling with 4 kids under 5 years old why would you book separate seats, and a hotel that wasn't so kid friendly to choose from. It's just stupid. If I knew that the trip was planned and booked how Tiffany did it I would have never went with her. I could have done something better myself. Worst experience traveling thanks to Tiffany!!

Dear mi t., I cannot begin to express how upset I was when I read your review. I am truly passionate about travel and my goal for every one of my clients is to have the best travel experience possible. I was also deeply saddened and frustrated that I did not hear about the issues you encountered until well after you were back from your trip. One of the main advantages of working with a travel agent is having an advocate on your side to address any challenges you encounter while on travel. However, I cannot resolve what I do not know about and I cannot make right that which I am not given the opportunity to fix. For any future vacations you plan, again, I cannot stress enough how important early planning is, especially for a large group. The earlier you begin planning, the more options you give yourself and the more likely you are to find the accommodations/flights/etc that meet your constraints (i.e. dates/budget). Booking so close to your departure, especially during busy times of the year, leaves you with limited options and makes planning your vacation more challenging. My husband and I were invited to a wedding in Modesto, so we decided to spend a few days in San Francisco, as we had never been. I wasn't sure how to book the hotel, flights, rental car, etc., so I Yelped Extra Mile Travel. Tiffany helped me book everything so that my vacation would run smoothly, and I wouldn't have to stress about making decisions. The hotel and recommendations in SF were awesome, and she was able to find me an Alcatraz Tour (even though they were sold out when booking directly through Alcatraz Tours). I will definitely use Tiffany again, and can't wait to start planning another trip.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. Tiffany worked hard to find us an all-inclusive trip to Cancun. She was EXTREMELY thorough, gave us all the information we needed for the trip and then some. I lost our confirmation number for the trip back and she took care of it in a matter of minutes. She got us exactly what we were looking for in every detail. She obviously listened very well. We do not plan to book anymore vacations without going through her.

Just got back from a amazing vacation in Cancun. It went just as planned all thanks to TIFFANY! She helped me plan and book my activities as well as hotel and transportation. She does it all! Just got back from a Kauai vacation that Tiffany helped me plan and book. She was helpful in finding a package within my budget and flexible and accommodating when I needed more information. She was very professional and ensured everything was taken care of before the trip. She also made herself available in case anything went wrong but everything went smoothly!

I used extra mile travel for my trip to Jamaica. Even though we didn't book yet, we were provided with exactly what we asked for. I will use EMT when we book in two weeks! No doubt! The turnaround time on our price quotes was awesome!

Just returned from my Spain trip that Tiffany helped me to plan! She was amazing!! Extremely responsive to my needs and she went above and beyond in booking 3 flights with different departure locations AND different return locations- all with the same layovers! The day before our trip (Xmas Eve), we had a little hiccup with check in; Tiffany went out of her way to contact the airline to make sure that we would have a smooth boarding process. Tiffany and Extra Mile were great to work with! I had a trip to Hawaii planned for over a year and of course waited to the last minute to start actively booking my travel. I wasted a full evening searching and looking for fares and car rentals and decided that I needed a professional to help. I do everything on Yelp, so on a whim looked up travel agents.
