Where the Bicycle Racks Are

trek college station

If we knew the places we plan to visit have reasonably secure and convenient bike racks, then the decision to pedal there would be an easy one. On the contrary, if there’s no good place to park the bike, we would choose (a) a different equivalent service with a better bike parking, or (b) drive a car if the said service had no substitute. Below is a list of different local maps for Bryan/College Station area, that could tell us this bit of useful information.

  • Laurel’s BCS Bike Map ( https://www.google.com/maps/ )
  • City of College Station ( https://cstx.maps.arcgis.com )
  • City of Bryan ( https://maps.bryantx.gov/bike/ )
  • TAMU Bike Parking Map ( https://transport.tamu.edu/parkingmap/bike/ )

Laurel’s BCS Bike Map

Our friend, Laurel, took it upon herself the immense task of cataloging the bicycle racks across twin cities over the past year. She took such care as to even include the photos, to show what these racks look like in real life, along with the time of last confirmation. Shown below is the resulting interactive map.

  • Different layers can be toggled on/off, such as Bike Lanes, Bike Routes, Multi-Use Paths, and Bike Parking.
  • Clicking on Bike Parking spots shows more detailed info, including photos on many, as well as last confirmed date.
  • If starred, this map will be available to view on your Google Maps, desktop or mobile. Follow this instruction: View your My Maps using Google Maps ( support.google.com )

A static map with infrequent updates would be less helpful than a crowd-sourced one that has many eyes and hands on continuously. Laurel’s map invites users to add missing or update outdated information, by submitting this form. ( https://forms.gle/yeYJQgzHhBkz9Zkd9 )

City of College Station – Bike Map

City of College Station offers a similar Bicycle Map, which includes bike rack locations throughout the city, as well as bike lanes & bike routes.

trek college station

Credit must be given to the city of College Station that dataset exported from their source gave a rich starting point for Laurel to build on. Especially the data for “Proposed, Planned & Funded” gives us a hopeful glimpse of better connected network.

City of Bryan – Bicycle Routes

City of Bryan also offers the map of Bicycle Routes. It serves the titled purpose, and does not yet include locations of bicycle racks.

trek college station

Please leave comment below if Bryan does have more relevant data available. The motivation behind Laurel’s map was to have a consolidated map that would cover both cities and the campus, for a seamless travel across these articifial boundaries.

Texas A&M University – Bike Map

Speaking of the campus, TAMU Bike Parking Map appears inactive at the time of this writing. Perhaps it used to work at some point in the past, and is no longer maintained or offered.

trek college station

Subjectively speaking, cycling on-campus is a comparatively more relaxed experience compared to off-campus. With few exceptions, almost all buildings have up-to-date, conveniently-located, and well-utilized bicycle parking. As the Sustainable Transportation team work diligently to ensure this quality service, I would encourage them should give themselves more credit by making this achievement readily visible.

What do you think about these maps? How can they be made more useful?

Bike Park is coming to Aggieland!

A mapview showing the Southeast Park on Rock Prairie Road

How it began

  • Due to soil deficiencies discovered at the site, constructing large paved surfaces, such as parking lots, is not practically or financially feasible.
  • October 25, 2023 : First presentation to the City Council. Kim spoke for the middle- and high school MTB team, and having safe spaces to allow more kids on bikes. Her impassioned speech, an act impossible to follow , starts at 16:25 of this video recording. ( https://collegestationtx.portal.civicclerk.com/event/3580/media )

Map view of Southeast park and Lick Creek Trail with green scribble lines for possible network of trails

Where things are now

  • October 30, 2023 : Capital Projects held an open house public meeting. Among many great ideas presented, bike park/trails option received a strong support.
  • November 9, 2023 : City Council meeting > Capital Projects Update. Site stabilization effort was deemed as an opportunity to quickly put together a prototype pump track/skills park . (Skip to 1:30:30 : https://collegestationtx.portal.civicclerk.com/event/3601/media )
  • November 20, 2023 : (TBD) a follow-up presentation to the city council is planned, to emphasize that this bike park plan will be for All Ages & Abilities , instead of a niche sport need.
  • December 11, 2023 : Capital Projects will update the council with a much broader plan.

Where we could go

trek college station

  • Skills park for all levels : a bike playground for toddlers on balance bikes, and a pump track for intermediate to advanced level riders
  • Accessible by bike : Connect to Lick Creek Hike & Bike trail, as well as multi-use path being built along Rock Prarie Road
  • Integrate with other uses : a dog park, frisbee golf, running trails, and a greater greenspace. Perhaps even a coffee shop in the woods !

Four-Star Texas A&M Aggies LB Target Noah Mikhail Sets Decision Date

Matt galatzan | 22 hours ago.

Texas A&M LB target Noah Mikhail with Mike Elko

  • Texas A&M Aggies

The Texas A&M Aggies are putting together a solid 2025 class, that could get even better in June.

So far this spring, the Aggies have cleaned up on the recruiting trail, earning commitments from covered 2025 prospects such as quarterback Husan Longstreet, offensive tackle Jonte Newman, and running back Deondrae Riden.

And while they have added a talented group of defensive players as well - including cornerback Deyjhon Pettaway - one area they are particularly in need of adding bodies is at the linebacker position.

Fortunately for Texas A&M and head coach Mike Elko , one of the best prospects in the nation at the position - Bonita (La Verne, CA) four-star Noah Mikhail - has the Aggies high on his list.

Noah Mikhail with Mike Elko

And as he revealed to On3 , Mikhail will make choice between the Aggies, USC Trojans and Oregon Ducks on June 30.

So why is the California product interested in making the trek to Aggieland?

According to Mikhail, the staff the Aggies have in place, as well as the opportunity to play in the SEC makes all the difference.

“Coach Elko, he’s a defensive-minded head coach, which is huge," Mikhail told On3 of the Aggies. "Coach (Jay) Bateman, he’s real smart, real great dude. You’re playing in the SEC. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than that. They’re changing that culture around, for real.”

Mikahail is set to take an official visit to College Station on June 21, giving the Aggies a chance to make the final impression on him before his decision. He will also visit the Trojans on June 7, and the Ducks on June 14.

Hunter College protesters descend on Met Gala, several arrests made. Here's the latest

By Dave Carlin , Jennifer Bisram

Updated on: May 7, 2024 / 6:26 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- Protesters supporting Palestinians departed Hunter College on Monday and made their way toward the  Met Gala  in New York City. Police said 27 people were arrested, mostly for disorderly conduct.

Hunter College is located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, approximately 12 blocks south of the  Metropolitan Museum of Art .

Several hundred people started to gather at Hunter around 4:30 p.m. and then began the trek north to the museum, where many celebrities and fans were in attendance for fashion's biggest night of the year .

According to CBS New York's Jennifer Bisram, the protesters initially stopped at 80th Street and Madison Avenue, where they were chanting "shut it down" and blocking the intersection. The group tried to get closer to the museum through Central Park, but several access points were shut down due to the Met Gala, Chopper 2's Dan Rice reported.

Members of the NYPD were on the scene, and police said earlier they were prepared for any demonstrations outside the gala .

The protesters at times clashed with officers and even pro-Israel supporters on Madison Avenue and in Central Park, just outside of the massive police perimeter.

During the demonstrations, a historical memorial for soldiers in Central Park was vandalized and an American flag was burned, as protestors marched with flares trying to disrupt the Met Gala.

The protest eventually dissipated near Manhattan's Grand Army Plaza about a mile away.

Hunter College goes fully remote

Hunter College made the announcement to go fully remote earlier Monday due to the ongoing protests.

Because the demonstrations were designed to be on the move, the school's administrators said they were not sure how many protesters would gather outside Hunter and for how long.

  • Read more :  Columbia University cancels main 2024 commencement ceremony, will host multiple ceremonies instead

Police officers put barricades in place outside the college's entrance on East 68th Street and Lexington Avenue. When the fully remote approach took effect at 3 p.m., students exited the campus in a large wave because a decision was made to cancel late afternoon and evening classes.

The school said all security measures that are being taken are out of an abundance of caution. Campus law enforcement told CBS New York it's better to be prepared with too much rather than too little.

Some Hunter students confused by switch to fully remote learning

Students said they learned of the change to online learning by email and text. Some said the announcement took them by surprise.

"I didn't even know that the protest was going to be happening today," sophomore Hannah Miller said. "So this is my last class for the day."

"I have a class at 6 p.m. and they basically canceled it and I have an exam next week, so it's preparation for exam," freshman Vilen Kim said. "I spend my time, I spend my money doing everything to get here and pay for the tuition and everything and they just canceled my class for no reason."

Lifelong best friends complete 600-mile journey in motorized toy cars

KEY WEST, Fla. (Gray News) – Two lifelong best friends have just completed a nearly 600-mile journey in motorized toy cars.

Cassie Aran and Lauren Lee, both 29, drove 596 miles from Jacksonville to Key West, Florida – a trek along the entire east coast of the state.

The women began their record-long journey over three months ago and arrived at their final destination in Key West on Saturday.

In a Facebook post , the City of Key West Government posted photos of Aran and Lee celebrating their arrival.

The best friends chronicled their adventure on social media to support their fundraiser aimed at helping animal shelters.

According to a report from WJXT , Aran and Lee were attempting to set a Guinness World Record for “Longest Distance by Toy Cars.”

However, the two will not officially be certified by Guinness World Records because of a financial dilemma.

During their journey, the women received a notification from Guinness that they were “no longer allowed to raise money towards saving animals unless they paid them $16,000,” according to Aran.

Although they said it was heartbreaking to give up their dream of holding a Guinness World Record, the women said it was far more important to them to donate the money they raised to animals in need.

So, they forfeited the Guinness title.

“We are so incredibly sad that we had to make the decision to choose between the record title and saving animals...but I know we made the right move,” Aran said in a post on her YouTube Channel . “I hope so many animals get saved from kill shelters and get the life they deserve because of this very sad decision. I hope you guys will still stay here for our 600-mile journey to the finish line in Key West. I love you guys and I’m going to go cry now..but I still stand by my decision 1000%.”

Aran and Lee have been best friends since kindergarten. They said the toy car journey was a way to honor their childhood memories, as they used to ride them around the neighborhood growing up together.

The women told WJXT that the adventure was so much fun that they plan on taking another long journey in toy cars again soon.

California news | ‘the bear,’ ‘reservation dogs’ among peabody award winners.

trek college station

The Peabody Awards — which honor “the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and streaming media during 2023” — will be presented this year in Los Angeles for the first time. The ceremony will be held June 9 at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, hosted by Kumail Nanjiani.

“Whether courageously documenting wars across the globe or cleverly bringing much needed smiles to our faces, the winners of the 84th Peabody Awards each crafted compelling and imaginative stories,” Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody, said in a statement. “Spanning a wide range of mediums and genres, they delivered enthralling projects that are worthy of our highest recognition.”

HBO/Max earned a leading seven awards, while PBS earned five, Amazon MGM Studios three and The Washington Post and FX each earned two.

Among the winners for HBO/Max was “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” marking the program’s third Peabody Award. The win for “Reservoir Dogs” was the series’ second.

“Star Trek” will receive the Institutional Award, with the Peabody organization recognizing the longevity and impact of a franchise that began in the 1960s with just a three-season run for the original series, but sparking films, spinoffs and reboots that have endured for decades.

“From a groundbreaking television series to an expansive collection of films, novels, comic books and so much more, ‘Star Trek’ has been delivering joy, wonder, and thought-provoking stories since the 1960s,” Jones said. “With powerful anti-war and anti-discrimination messages, it has blazed trails for all science fiction franchises while winning over passionate fans across the globe. We’re proud to honor ‘Star Trek’ with Peabody’s Institutional Award.”

Previous winners of the award include “The Simpsons,” “60 Minutes,” “Sesame Street,” “TODAY” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.”

Peabody officials also announced that WITNESS, the international rights group co-founded by musician Peter Gabriel that helps people worldwide use video and digital technologies to protect and defend human rights, will receive the organization’s Global Impact Award.

“Founded in 1993, WITNESS’ efforts have evolved with changing technologies, and have had a lasting impact on movements to secure freedom and democracy worldwide,” Jones said. “WITNESS’ work has been instrumental in protecting human rights around the world, and we are proud to honor them for their work harnessing video to do so.”

Also set to be feted during the June 9 ceremony will be previously announced honorees Mel Brooks, who will receive the Peabody Career Achievement Award, and “Abbott Elementary” creator/actress Quinta Brunson, who will receive the Peabody Trailblazer Award.

The Peabody Awards were founded in 1940 at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, where they are still housed.

Train from Burlington to Middlebury links familiar places, creates new experiences

trek college station

MIDDLEBURY – When Amtrak began train service from Burlington in 2022, supporters heralded the route for finally connecting the state’s largest city with the nation’s largest city, New York.

That was why I took the train for the first time this April, to go to New York for fun and a bit of work, writing about the Broadway musical “Suffs” created by and starring Vermont native Shaina Taub. (I rode not from Burlington but the next stop south, Vergennes.)

It wasn’t long, I think between Middlebury and Rutland, before I realized the train doesn’t just connect Burlington with New York. It connects Vermont with itself. With one train south and another heading north later in the day, it’s possible to use Amtrak as a commuter train to visit a Vermont community for the day.

I’ve always loved train travel, whether it was a short jaunt down the Hudson Valley or a long ride connecting countries in Europe. That feeling of sitting in comfort and suddenly finding yourself in a new place to explore is thrilling.

I took the train Sunday, April 28, from Burlington not to a metropolis but to Middlebury, a Vermont town I’ve been to dozens of times for work and pleasure. Sure, I could drive there in 40 minutes. But I wanted that freedom of arriving somewhere with nothing to do but roam, even if it’s a place I know well.

I wanted to be a traveler in my own land.

9 a.m., Burlington Bay Market & Café

My wife drives me to Burlington so we can have breakfast as close to the train station as possible. We order breakfast sandwiches, coffee and orange juice at Burlington Bay and sit at a window overlooking Lake Champlain and the tracks I’ll be riding in an hour.

My sandwich is simple but excellent. The Bay Original has bacon, two eggs and cheddar cheese on a Portuguese muffin, a moister, smoother, almost roll-like version of an English muffin. As I take my last few sips of coffee I hear the train engine rumble to a start, my signal that it’s time to go.

9:55 a.m., Union Station

I board early for the 10:10 a.m. departure. The station isn’t super-busy on a Sunday morning, but I do spot familiar faces getting on what’s now our local train.

We leave right on time. I sit at a lakeside window to see my wife waving goodbye from Perkins Pier. It feels like one of those movies where the guy heads to war as his sweetheart sees him off, except I’m just a reporter going to a quiet college town for a day of food and art.

It’s lovely to see the lake, the Adirondacks and hill-ringed farm fields as the train rolls slowly through the city before picking up speed heading south. This is a much more glorious way to view the landscape than if I were driving down U.S. 7 with dominant views of stoplights and taillights.

10:38 a.m., Vergennes train station

A couple of passengers get off here less than half an hour after leaving Burlington. People without cars or who would rather not drive have a new way to get to this sweet little city. Another half-dozen or so passengers get on board, much as I did two weeks earlier for that seven-hour trek to New York.

An announcer says the café car is now open. I’m all set for meal plans for the day, but it’s reassuring to know sustenance can be had. The train pulls out of the station at exactly 10:44 a.m., the same time I left Vergennes on my trip to New York.

11 a.m., Middlebury train station

The train arrives in Middlebury. A couple dozen passengers, many of college age, get on board. I’m one of the few who disembarks.

I’m in Middlebury for the next 10 hours, until the northbound train returns. Even if it’s a mellow Sunday on an ordinary spring day, I get that tingly feeling that this town is mine to explore.

Noon, The Mad Taco

I walk from the train station toward the nearby Marble Works business complex along Otter Creek. My optimism hits an immediate snag: My first planned destination, American Flatbread, isn’t open, even though the restaurant’s website says it’s open for brunch from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sundays. (In fact, the website shouts “BRUNCH!”)

Oh, well, someone in town must be serving lunch. As I cross the footbridge across Otter Creek toward downtown, I hear and feel the churn of the waterfall in its full spring roil. The surprise thunderstorm that hit first thing this morning is long gone. Picnickers take advantage of the gorgeous day by lounging along the creek’s dramatic banks.

Spots I’d visit in the minutes before lunch – Edgewater Gallery, the Sheldon Museum, the Vermont Book Shop – are all closed this Sunday morning. I wander the streets to get my bearings in a town I’ve been to so many times, but never with so many hours on my hands.

My circuit leads me back to Marble Works, and I know that just across the footbridge I’ll find The Mad Taco. The restaurant has a sandwich board outside saying it’s open from noon to 8 p.m. every day. Sunday is a day, so I go inside to become one of the first customers.

Soon I’m sitting at a picnic table on the outdoor patio savoring a juicy pork-belly taco and a tangy achiote chicken taco and sipping a pilsner from von Trapp Brewing. I listen to the roar of the falls and chatter from Middlebury College students and employees and relish the chance to relax in fresh air after a long, blah winter. Temperatures are only in the mid-60s, but it feels warm.

1 p.m. Royal Oak Coffee

I follow my footsteps back over the footbridge past the Marble Works complex to homey Royal Oak Coffee, across Seymour Street from the train station. I order a soothing coffee to-go and rest briefly in an Adirondack chair on the front lawn overlooking the station. I realize I’d better start my longest walk of the day to get to the event that spurred my Sunday visit to Middlebury in the first place.

2 p.m., Mahaney Arts Center, Middlebury College

I arrive early and sit outside to finish my coffee in sight of the Robert Indiana “LOVE” sculpture. I head inside the Mahaney Arts Center for the free matinee performance by the Heath Quartet.

Most concerts, of course, are at night, and with the way the once-a-day train schedule works you’d have to leave an evening performance early to catch the train back north. A matinee was my chance to see a concert in an arts-rich college town and still rely on the train to get me there.

The Heath Quartet opens at a packed Robison Concert Hall with a bit of Bach, a melodic overture of sorts leading to a longer, friskier piece by Haydn. The second half focuses on 20 th -century composers, with a mysterious work by Henriette Bosmans and an intense piece by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

The sound is perfect in this visually pleasing hall with its walls of light, curving wood. The art of architecture helps elevate the art of performance.

4:06 p.m., Middlebury College Museum of Art

The concert ends and I head downstairs to the Middlebury College Museum of Art. I’ve visited before but either forgot or missed works by some big names scattered throughout the collection.

Those names include Rembrandt, Picasso, Warhol, Chihuly, Rodin and my ol’ pal Frederic Edwin Church, whose historic home above the Hudson River I worked at as a college student. His painting of Otter Creek takes me back to the footbridge I’ve crossed so many times today.

I was just as smitten by the paintings, sculpture and crafts by artists unknown to me and cultures in Africa and Asia I have not had the opportunity to experience first-hand. The museum’s collection is small but worthy – especially because, like with the Heath Quartet concert, admission is free.

5 p.m. Trail Around Middlebury

From the Mahaney Arts Center I cut across the sports complex to a segment of the Trail Around Middlebury, aka the TAM, an 18-mile circuit my wife and I have walked pretty much in its entirety in snippets over the years. I pick up the Red Kelly Trail along the college’s Ralph Myhre Golf Course, hearing the ping of tee shots and tweet-tweet of bird calls as I stroll.

I planned to walk a fair distance out and back, but soon I reach a steep decline that would become a steep incline on my return trip.  I’ve already done a lot of walking today, so I’ve earned a rest on a bench near the 11 th -hole tee box. Amtrak texts to say my return train is expected to arrive 15 minutes late in Middlebury. Looks like my stay in town is going into overtime.

6:30 p.m., Fire & Ice Restaurant

My circuitous route back downtown through the college campus takes me past the library, the chapel and the student center. Amtrak updates my train’s status to say it’s now likely to be 40 minutes late, so I have plenty of time for ambling.

Fire & Ice, across from the train station next to Royal Oak Coffee, has been around 50 years. I’ve been in Vermont more than half that time and write about food for my job, yet somehow I’ve never been here.

The décor takes me aback, and takes me back; it’s shockingly retro, with quaint touches including a boat at the entrance, a light-fixture-filled canoe hanging from the ceiling, walls brimming with bric-a-brac and more polished wood than you’d find in a Minwax showroom. Everything that goes around comes around, as they say, so this feels fresh in an era when new restaurants aim for a loud, sterile warehouse vibe. Maybe it’s just that I’m getting old and nostalgic, but I find it comforting.

The menu is also old-school. Those loud, sterile new restaurants may not offer familiar standards like shrimp scampi or fettucine Alfredo that are included on the Fire & Ice menu.

I’m in Middlebury so I should order a drink by one of my favorite Vermont breweries, Drop-In Brewing just off the TAM on the south side of town. The Heart of Lothian Scottish ale goes with the special I ordered, duck ragout, shredded duck and pasta with vegetables and asiago cheese.

The dish is creamy and succulent. Small chunks of carrot and celery take the load off the heaviness of the meat and pasta. As with the cilantro I carefully picked off my lunch at The Mad Taco, a little pungent Asiago cheese goes a long way for me, so I set much of that aside.

I finish my entrée an hour before my train’s scheduled but now-delayed departure, so I might as well stay for dessert and coffee. I dig into a maple crème brulee with the thickest, crunchiest shell of any I’ve had, like eating a sugary, delicious windshield. My Dutch coffee, made with crème de menthe and crème de cacao, is warm and minty, a dessert all its own.

Fire & Ice stops welcoming new customers at 8 p.m., but those of us already here can stay a while. When I washed dishes at a restaurant in college I used to resent customers arriving 10 minutes before closing time, because it meant I’d have a long night. As a customer killing time waiting for a delayed train, this kind of late dining is most welcome.

For two hours I’ve enjoyed delicious food and drink and fine service. The server leaves me an after-dinner mint. How retro once again.

8:30 p.m., Middlebury train platform

There comes a time at a restaurant when you go from customer to trespasser, so I need to make my way to the train platform. The rain I successfully dodged all day is here, albeit super-light, so the raincoat I’ve carried in my backpack all day makes its first appearance.

I walk the short distance to the platform and wait, and wait, for a train Amtrak now says could be 45 minutes late. I left home exactly 12 hours ago. What’s another three-quarters of an hour?

The train arrives just before 9:20 p.m., only half an hour late, which in Amtrak time isn’t bad.

10:05 p.m., Union Station, Burlington

The train makes quick headway from Middlebury to Burlington, so only 10 minutes after it was due we pull up to Union Station where my wife greets me. There’s no place nearby open this late for a nightcap, so we drive the short distance up the hill to find a place downtown.

We arrive at The Archives, the bar/arcade where the Burlington Free Press was once located. We both order one of Vermont’s most-celebrated beers, an Edward American pale ale by Hill Farmstead Brewery, and sit at a front window overlooking a quiet College Street.

It’s been a long day. It’s been a wonderful day, and all for a $22 round-trip train ticket. I tell my wife I’m already dreaming of a similar carefree excursion in a few months from Vergennes to Rutland. Maybe that day my train will come in on time.
