The gentle sway of train travel evokes feelings of nostalgia and romance as you glide past miles of majestic scenery, from oceans to vineyards to mountains.

Passengers on U.S. overnight trains will find some new services and routes to add to the appeal of rail travel this year. Also noteworthy: Amtrak is accelerating plans to modernize and replace its entire fleet of overnight trains across the country for the first time in 40 years. The railway says the new overnight trains are still in the works, but plans include improving accessibility and efficiency for the long-distance network.

AARP Membership — $12 for your first year when you sign up for Automatic Renewal

Canadian company VIA Rail is on a similar track. In January, the railway announced plans to renew its existing long-distance fleet. The company is looking for a supplier to design and manufacture new cars, and the project will hopefully start this year.

Currently, Amtrak provides coach seats, private rooms and dining options on its 14 overnight trains. The Rocky Mountaineer (listed below) offers similar services. Of course, accommodations vary by train, and fares vary by season and time of booking.

Here are three overnight train journeys to consider (all prices are one way).

Train: Rocky Mountaineer

Route: Between Denver and Moab, Utah

Overnights: One

The Canadian company’s newest train route in the U.S. travels through the Southwest from April through October. Passengers don’t sleep aboard the train, but in a hotel in the hot-springs town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, before reaching Moab. Daylight travel includes crossing the Continental Divide and riding alongside the Colorado River, snowcapped peaks and red-rock canyons while sipping signature cocktails.

Cost: Prices start at $1,456 for one person including hotel room and some meals. Note: Rocky Mountaineer does not offer senior rates, but check the website for promotions.

Train: City of New Orleans, Amtrak

Route: Between Chicago and New Orleans

This route from the Windy City to the Big Easy makes it convenient to stop along the way, experience something new and hop on a train the next day to break up the 19-hour journey. Stop in Memphis to see Elvis’ Graceland home and the National Civil Rights Museum , then stay in the city overnight. The train offers flexible dining and café services, but Amtrak plans to transition to more traditional dining with servers later this year. Also on track for 2023, passengers will be able to travel from New Orleans via resumed service to Mobile, Alabama, on another train.

Cost: Prices start at $258 for a roomette, including meals. A coach seat, without meals, starts at $110. Note: Amtrak offers a 10 percent discount for passengers 65 and older.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

Train: Empire Builder, Amtrak

Route: Between Chicago and Seattle/Portland, Oregon

Overnights: Two

One of Amtrak’s most popular routes, the 46-hour Empire Builder provides a front seat to some of the most iconic scenery of the West. After the daily westbound train departs Chicago, you’ll cross the Mississippi River and the North Dakota plains and follow parts of the Lewis and Clark trail. The highlight is riding through Montana’s Glacier National Park (you can stop overnight). From Spokane, Washington, you can continue to Seattle or head down the Columbia River Gorge to Portland, with stunning views of Mount Hood. Amtrak plans to launch a second train later this year between Chicago and St. Paul, Minnesota, for more off-train flexibility.

Cost: Prices start at $282 for a single roomette, including meals. A coach seat starts at $150. Note: Amtrak offers a 10 percent discount for passengers 65 and older.

Amtrak Announced a Major Upgrade to Its Fleet, With Sleek New ‘Amtrak Airo’ Trains Rolling Out Across the U.S. in 2026

Train travel in the U.S. is about to get a major upgrade. On Thursday, Amtrak announced Amtrak Airo , a new fleet of trains with more spacious interiors and modernized amenities that will start rolling out in 2026, marking the largest single upgrade to its corridor fleet in the company’s 51-year history.

“We were inspired by Moynihan Train Hall to create modern trains with world-class amenities that will transform the customer experience,” Amtrak President Roger Harris said at a press conference at the New York City station, which opened in 2021. “We created a harmonious design that works throughout the train from the exterior into the interior and to create a consistent, contemporary look and feel. On the interior, the trains will elevate the journey while maintaining some of the popular benefits of train travel.”

Passengers will enjoy more room inside the train cars, as well as panoramic windows to take in the outdoor scenery. The “spacious seats” will also have “ergonomic details, plenty of legroom, and plenty of room for your personal devices,” Harris said. There will be adjustable headrests, larger and sturdier tray tables, and new amenities like cupholders, tablet holders, and more table seating—that is, four seats facing one another sharing a table in the middle. There will also be dedicated individual charging ports (both USB and power outlets), as well as free Wi-Fi. The business class car will offer the choice of double and single seats.

The new Amtrak Airo trains will feature more table seating, as well as bigger windows and ergonomic seats.

Onboard dining will also get a facelift with more “contemporary food service with a thoughtfully-designed cafe car,” Harris said. In addition to more self-service options, attendants will also be on hand to serve them. Wayfinding signage will get a cleaner look, with a more easily-identifiable color-coded system, while the train cars will have enhanced lighting systems with high-tech customer information systems, as well as touchless restroom controls. ADA accessibility will be increased throughout the rail experience.

While the Amtrak Airo fleet will continue to travel up to 125 miles per hour like the current trains, a new seamless transition between electric and diesel operations will reduce travel times on certain routes. The new trains will also be more fuel efficient with 90 percent less particulate emissions while using diesel operations, and will meet Tier 4 emission standards in a battery diesel hybrid configuration.

“This is really exciting since the battery will allow for zero-emission operations while the trains move through the tunnels here in New York City,” Janet Ho of the New York State Department of Transportation said at the press conference. “Outside the city, the battery will be used to capture and score braking energy to provide acceleration boosts when exiting other stations.”

Production on the first train cars—which will be made in the U.S.— has begun, and is being manufactured by Siemens in California.

Amtrak Airo will first roll out on the Cascades services in Washington and Oregon and then be rolled out across the country—in a process that will take about five years—primarily servicing northeastern routes between Maine and North Carolina. Routes will include the Northeast Regional , as well as other routes in and out of New York like the Adirondack , Empire Service , Ethan Allen Express , Keystone Service , Maple Leaf , Pennsylvanian , and Vermonter . Routes elsewhere in the country that will also get Amtrak Airo trains will include Carolinian , Downeaster , New Haven/Springfield Service , Palmetto , and Virginia Services .

“We're really excited that this can help revitalize the passenger experience not only in New York actually but across the nation,” Ho said.

The news of Amtrak's standard short-haul fleet revitalization is an addition to its announcement that its upscale Acela service on the East Coast will debut new trains in late 2023 . Currently in production by French-based Alstom, the train’s seats will have winged headrests for a better barrier between passengers, personal outlets and USB ports, and contactless storage options for luggage. The roomier restrooms will also have automated doors and contactless features.

A Glimpse at Amtrak’s Newest Trains

This week, Amtrak offered a look at its next generation of trains , which will eventually run in the Northeast Corridor and elsewhere.

The trains are still several years away, but here’s what to expect →

This is a rendering of the new train, called the Amtrak Airo, which is being built by Siemens Mobility in Sacramento. It is scheduled to debut in 2026 in the Pacific Northwest and then will be phased in elsewhere.

Amtrak is planning to spend $7.3 billion on the new trains. In the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor, the Airo will replace trains that date to the 1970s ; those will be scrapped or sold off.

Here’s an interior rendering . The new trains will feature panoramic windows and seats with moveable headrests, bigger tray tables, power outlets and USB ports. The cafe car will have self-service options.

Another rendering of the Airo. Amtrak was a big winner in last year’s bipartisan infrastructure bill, which aside $66 billion for the rail sector . Amtrak is set to receive a large share of that money, some of which will go toward the new trains.

Next year, Amtrak will begin phasing in new Acela trains in the Northeast Corridor. While the Airo will have a top speed of 125 miles per hour — the same as today’s Northeast Regional trains — the new Acela trains will be able to go up to 160 miles per hour, slightly faster those currently in service.

Even with the new infrastructure funding, Amtrak remains on rocky financial footing . Its ridership plummeted during the coronavirus pandemic and has yet to fully recover, and the rail service has never turned a profit.

In the past, when people heard “Amtrak,” they often associated us with words like “old” and “antiquated.” Today, we’re changing that narrative as we deliver a new era of passenger rail in America.

In the coming years, Amtrak will invest over $50 billion into modern trains, enhanced stations and facilities, new tunnels and bridges, and other critical infrastructure upgrades.

These generational investments mean we’re no longer only a passenger rail operator. Today, Amtrak is also a major construction company executing one of the largest capital programs in the history of the United States.

But we can’t do this alone. We’re working alongside state and local governments, rail partners and others to implement these projects effectively. This requires close collaboration and planning not only for projects Amtrak is leading, but also those led by our partners.

With so many projects in the pipeline, it can be challenging for those outside the company to keep track. I’d like to reintroduce Amtrak’s infrastructure investment plans now that these transformative projects are becoming reality.

Building on Bipartisan Support

Let’s begin with the critical role that strong support from the U.S. Congress and President Joe Biden has played in making Amtrak’s historic investments possible. In November 2021, President Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) – also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).

This historic bill provides an important commitment and down payment towards reversing decades of underinvestment in American passenger rail. With $66 billion total earmarked for intercity passenger and freight rail over five years, Amtrak and our partners’ portion of IIJA funding will enable us to address our state-of-good-repair backlog, upgrade infrastructure and expand capacity.

Creating a Capital Delivery Team

Here at Amtrak – we’re ready to deliver. We hit the ground running and created a new Capital Delivery department in early 2022. This new group is responsible for delivering Amtrak’s critical infrastructure projects. That covers early planning and design stages all the way through construction and on to operations.

In just one year, the Capital Delivery team has grown over 50%, with 630 current employees and counting. In addition to new management staff, we’re also hiring hundreds of additional union employees in the electric, signal, and track fields who will focus on both IIJA-funded and other capital projects. Upgrading Critical Infrastructure

The Northeast Corridor (NEC) is one of the busiest, most complex and economically vital transportation systems in the world, serving more than 260 million passenger trips each year before the pandemic. The main portion is 457 miles long, connecting major cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston.

As the majority owner of the NEC, Amtrak is responsible for moving intercity travelers and providing access or operational support to eight commuter lines and six freight operators. These partners rely on our tunnels, bridges and tracks, many of which are over 100 years old. While safe to travel on, they require upgrades or replacement to provide more reliable high-speed travel.

Bolstered by IIJA funding, we’re advancing plans for new tunnels and bridges that will improve reliability, expand capacity and increase train speeds along the NEC, as well as other upgrades for the National Network. These include but are not limited to:

Gateway Program

The most urgent infrastructure program in America is a series of projects that will improve the most congested 10-mile section of the NEC, between Newark, New Jersey and New York City. Led by the Gateway Development Commission in partnership with Amtrak and others, these projects will add needed resiliency and create the capacity for doubling passenger trains into Moynihan Train Hall at New York Penn Station (NYP) – America’s busiest train station. Work includes building a new Hudson River Tunnel, rehabbing the existing century-old tunnel, introducing new tracks and platforms at NYP, building two brand new bridges (Portal North and Portal South) over the Hackensack River in New Jersey, constructing loop tracks in Bergen County, replacing the Sawtooth Bridges and more.

B&P Tunnel Replacement Program

We’ve kicked off enabling work for a major program that will modernize and transform a four-mile section of the NEC. This will address the biggest rail bottleneck between Washington, D.C. and New Jersey. A new tunnel named after American abolitionist Frederick Douglass is the centerpiece of this program, featuring two high-capacity tubes. Additional work includes new roadway and railroad bridges, new rail systems and track and a new accessible MARC commuter rail station.

Susquehanna River Bridge Replacement

The longest moveable bridge on the NEC is approaching 120 years since opening and showing its age. We will replace the existing two-track bridge with four new tracks over two new bridges. Additional infrastructure upgrades like redesigned interlockings, new tracks and modernized signals will support higher-speed travel.

Chicago Hub Improvement Program (CHIP)

Chicago is the hub of Amtrak’s National Network. Every day, dozens of Long Distance and State Supported trains start or end their routes at Chicago Union Station. CHIP will advance and accelerate Chicago-area infrastructure projects that increase capacity and reliability, reduce trip times, facilitate future service expansions and improve safety.

Introducing a Modern Fleet

We’re also modernizing a large portion of our fleet. Today, we have several projects in various stages that will introduce state-of-the-art passenger trains and locomotives across the United States, as well as upgrade rail yards to support these new trains:

The new high-speed Acela fleet will replace the original trainsets introduced at the start of the century. These new trains are made in America by Alstom and will further solidify the NEC as a high-speed rail corridor, achieving speeds up to 160 mph. With nearly 25% more seats than existing Acela trains, each new train will enhance comfort, technology, innovation and safety on our most sustainable fleet to date. A total of 28 new trains will be phased in over the coming years.

New Amtrak Airo Trains

Customer experience enhancements are coming to several routes around the country with new trains that will start debuting in 2026. Our new Amtrak Airo trains will elevate the customer journey with a focus on comfort and efficiency. These new trains will be built in America by Siemens and provide even more advantages to traveling by rail, including a modern, spacious interior, a greener impact and faster travel times. A total of 73 trains have been ordered, with contract options for additional trains.

New Long Distance Trains

We’ve kicked off initial work to purchase new long-distance trains that will upgrade and modernize vital services on 14 overnight routes from coast-to-coast. The existing overnight train fleet has been placed into service over past 40 years. These new trains will reiterate Amtrak’s commitment to delivering travelers from city centers to small towns and everywhere in between.

New Locomotives

Cleaner, faster, and more efficient locomotives are now entering service on Amtrak’s National Network, primarily for Long Distance trains. Made in America by Siemens, the new Charger Locomotives (also known as ALC-42s) are considerably more environmentally friendly than their 1990s predecessors, consume less fuel and can reach a greater top speed of 125 mph.

Enhancing Stations Across the Country

It’s not enough to simply add new trains. We must also modernize our stations, where Amtrak customers begin and end their journey with us. A few years ago, Amtrak opened its new home at Moynihan Train Hall in New York City. This new state-of-the-art facility serves as a model for our major stations, many of which were built over a century ago.

We’re proud of this new world-class station and the modern customer experience it provides. Building on this momentum, we’re advancing several other station upgrades, including but not limited to:

NEC Station Upgrades and Expansions

Work has begun to redevelop and revitalize Baltimore Penn Station and the surrounding area. We also have major renovation projects planned for Philadelphia’s Gray 30 th Street Station and Washington Union Station. These major upgrades will expand station capacity, improve passenger flow, add new customer amenities, introduce retail opportunities and benefit surrounding communities. Additionally, the Gateway Program includes major reconstruction and expansion plans for NYP.

Chicago Union Station

Amtrak’s busiest station outside the NEC hosts over 3.3 million customers and nearly 20,000 intercity and commuter trains each year. As part of the CHIP Program, Chicago Union Station will undergo significant customer safety and experience improvements, including capacity and customer flow improvements thanks to platform expansions and new stairs/elevators, architectural renovations and more.

ADA Stations Program

Making our stations accessible to all customers is a major priority. We’re performing station construction, renovation, repair and upgrade projects across the National Network. Upgrades include brand new boarding platforms, fully accessible restrooms and waiting rooms and more.

Find your closest railway station with the handy inbuilt reality function, and enjoy extra benefits such as free and discounted boat and ferry trips, hotel and museum discounts (for Pass holders only). It was created by HaCon, a leading European developer that has already designed apps for Deutsche Bahn and Austrian Railways.

3. Tickety Split – Ticket Splitting

Cost: Free Platform: iOS, Blackberry Developer: MoneySavingExpert.com

Dividing your train journey into two separate tickets can save you hundreds of pounds a year. Known as ticket splitting, you don’t actually leave the train, you just buy two separate tickets.

Rail companies have kept schtum on the technique, for obvious reasons, but it’s perfectly legal. Simply enter the journey you want to make, and the app will tell you if it’s cheaper to split – and at which locations.

For example, on a journey from Swindon to Manchester Piccadilly, you’ll save £130 if you buy a ticket from Swindon to Stoke-on-Trent, then Stoke to Manchester. If you don’t have an iPhone, access the site via splitticket.moneysavingexpert.com

4. rail commute – live uk train times and platforms.

Perfect for UK rail users and commuters, you can locate your next train, its platform and any delays instantly. An award-winning app with more than 22 million downloads worldwide, this is much more than a simple tube map. Want to plan journeys? Check. Find out when the next tube is coming? Check. Plan a new route if there are delays on your line? Check.

Tube Map can even give you the location of your nearest London Tube station if you’re out and about and need to head home in a hurry.

It’s a real-time route planner that can help users navigate around tube disruptions. It uses Transport for London’s (TfL) live data to give station information and train timings.

You can even check your Oyster Card balance – an extremely useful feature.

The map is now cleverly synched with Bus London and myTrains, making cross-capital travel just that much easier.

6. tube exits – london.

Cost: 69p Platform: iOS Developer: Wavana DC

The genius behind Tube Exits, developer Lance Stewart created this, his first app back in 2008, and now has a dedicated start-up team.

Guessing the best carriage to be in for the shortest transfer to another platform is now a thing of the past. Not only does this app tell you which carriage to board, but also provides platform exit information for all Tube, DLR and London Overground (New) stations.

It also shows live line status information, alternative routes and has a handy tube map, which is accessible offline. Tube Exits has had more than 50,000 downloads from the App Store and is now available for the Paris Metro and Berlin U-Bahn.

7. Exit Strategy – NYC

Cost: $3.99 Platform: iOS / Android / Blackberry Developer: JWeg Ventures LLC

Like the UK app (see above) Exit Strategy cuts journey times – in this instance for NYC – by telling you the best railway car to travel in for optimum station entrances and exits for your journey. The ‘ultimate New York City navigation app’ has zoomable, scrollable and fully-interactive MTA subway maps, and bus maps for all five boroughs, as well as neighbourhood maps for all streets in Manhattan. It also includes useful address ranges so you can find those cross streets. Best of all you don’t even need an internet connection. Navigating the Big Apple was never so easy.

8. HopStop – Transit Directions

Cost: Free Platform: iOS Developer: HopStop.com

Incredibly this is still a free app and packed full of value offering travellers detailed information for bus, train, taxi, subway and biking and walking directions, plus local station search and station-to-station schedules in more than 140 locations across Europe, New Zealand and Australia, Canada and the US. One fun feature is HopStop Live!, allowing you to see what other users are saying – in real-time – about the various locations and transportation you use the most. And for wheelchair users there is a special feature that highlights wheelchair and stroller-friendly routes. Share your information and directions easily via email, messaging, Facebook ( View Company Profile ) and Twitter.

9. FareBandit

Cost: Free Platform: Android only (or via PC / Macs) Developer: Petr Pechousek

FareBandit’s creator is a self-admitted member of the 240,000-plus group of fare dodgers, or ‘black riders’, who pass through the Prague public transport system each year without purchasing tickets.

Downloaded by more than 1,000, Pechousek has cleverly integrated Google maps into the app. “I am a software developer by trade, and I wanted to create something for mobile platforms that hadn’t been done before,” he says.

“It struck me that an app that could share the location of inspectors would be extremely useful to some people.” If you’re a dodgy customer too, you’ll be pleased to know that FareBandit is also available for Berlin, Bratislava, Paris and Vienna. (While we applaud ingenuity railway-technology does not condone fare dodging).

10. Mo – Green App – Car Sharing and Bike Sharing

Developer: LUNAR Europe / Green City eV / University of Wuppertal

Created as a joint venture, MO is a hybrid of Zipcar car sharing with bike-sharing and public transport use, encouraging subscribers to use the lowest impact transportation options possible. Connecting to each user’s app, Mo tracks the mileage used and rewards users when they choose a ‘green’ travel option. For example, using public transport can store up miles that can be used later to rent a car or a bike. Users receive extra credit for using their own bikes. Still in its infancy, Mo is only in use around Munich, but the technology could well spread to other parts of Europe, meaning fewer cars on streets and a quieter environment.

Helps you find your way around public transport in more than 400 cities worldwide. Simply download the city you’re visiting and plan your route via bus, tram, tube and train. It also provides weekly updates.

5 Ways to Find the Cheapest Train Travel

When in search of the cheapest train travel, many frugal customers seek out rail passes. These purchases benefit people who plan extensive train travel. Many days riding the rails are necessary before the passes become a budget travel bargain.

Some travelers simply purchase the passes before the details of their itineraries are completed, and thus fail to compare the cost of the pass with the sum of point-to-point ticket prices. There are many trips for which the point-to-point totals come in are lower than the pass prices.

Be careful booking high-speed trains with rail passes in Europe. Many of the most efficient, time-saving trains are not completely covered on the pass, and you'll be expected to pay a premium for the better service. Travelers without this knowledge sometimes face embarrassing scenes with a conductor during the trip -- a scene made even more awkward at times by language barriers.

Another common problem is buying a pass that covers a wider geographic area or a longer time frame than is necessary. If a trip is limited to one or two countries, national passes can be a much better buy.

Rail passes in Europe often prove more extensive and valuable than in other travel destinations. But a budget traveler should expect to find rail passes around the world .

Using rail passes correctly -- or not at all -- can keep your travel budget on track. But there are a few other important considerations for finding the cheapest train travel that you should consider carefully.

Reserving Seats in Second Class

One of the most common train travel mistakes involves booking first-class seats when second-class tickets will do.

There are longer journeys that might merit a first-class ticket. A key question: will you get a significantly more comfortable seat or much better service in first-class? Don't assume the answer to this question is as obvious as it would be on an airplane.

On some European trains, seats in the two sections are identical in design and comfort-level. The only real difference is that second-class cars might be more crowded because it is more affordable. You'll find more peace and quiet with your higher-priced ticket, but it will be tougher to meet interesting people. There are times when neither section is crowded.

It's difficult to know how many seats around you will be occupied at time of booking. But the point is to find out about the differences before you buy first-class tickets.

Sleeping on the Train

Have you considered sleeping on the train instead of booking a room for the night?

True overnight routes are becoming less plentiful these days, but you can still find connections that will enable you to spend several hours on a single train.

Light sleepers might find quality rest to be difficult. The trains continue to make stops throughout the night and early morning. The jolts and squeals that are common when entering or leaving a station can wake up even deep sleepers at times.

The benefits of an overnight aboard the train are worth considering.

Accommodations aboard many trains are similar in price to one night in a budget-priced hotel room. If you can sleep in a seat, even more savings are possible.

Unless you pick up a flight on a budget airline in Europe , this is among your best options for freeing up more daytime hours for exploring the next destination. Step off the train and into your next travel adventure. If an overnight train trip buys you additional quality vacation time, you have achieved the cheapest train travel.

Paying Attention to Age Discounts

Booking train tickets is not an activity for people who are sensitive about revealing their ages. There are train discounts based solely on age that become available on many lines.

Seniors enjoy some great price breaks. Beginning at age 60, you can save money on certain routes or rail passes in Europe at various times of year. You might have to purchase first-class tickets in order to book the discount.

Don't assume seniors get all the price breaks.

Rail Europe offers riders age 25 and younger discounts on various routes, and even their own age-specific pass. It is definitely worth researching as you consider ticket purchases.

Some special offers come without age requirements attached. Click the right-facing arrow and read about special offers for train passengers.

Looking for Special Offers

Many rail systems offer special fares for travel groups. These can become attractive when multiplied by a large number of people. Use a search term such as "group fares" when doing your research.

Other special offers stem from off-peak travel periods when seats are more likely to be empty. In 2016, Rail Europe offered 20 percent savings on France rail passes when booked before May 3. Look for fare offers like that in late fall and late winter or early spring.

Via Rail in Canada offers Discount Tuesdays . The deals appear each Tuesday between 7 a.m. and midnight (ET).

Amtrak offers SmartFares. Riders can save 30 percent on one-way coach fares. There are new routes and deals available each week, but only from Tuesday through Friday.

These fare promotions are likely to come and go in the course of a year or two. The marketing professionals will come up with new names and discount terms. Your goal should be to watch the special offers section of your favorite rail line and take advantage of the deals when your travel schedule is flexible enough to do so.

Don't forget about the possibility of coupons or promotional codes. For example, RetailMeNot offers Rail Europe coupon codes . These discounts are perishable and usually quite restricted, so take note of the fine print.

If you take all of these factors into account, chances are good you'll get one of the cheapest train travel itineraries possible. Just be certain you know the restrictions on each possible discount. Make the effort and you'll be rewarded.

Major subway service changes

trains, brooklyn.

and local trains aren't running between Crown Heights-Utica Av and New Lots Av from 3:30 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday because of track replacement work.

For service between Crown Heights-Utica Av and New Lots Av, take free shuttle buses, which are running between these stations and making all stops.
Late-night trains run between Harlem-148 St and Times Sq-42 St.
trains are running between Woodlawn and Crown Heights-Utica Av all weekend.

trains, Brooklyn

trains aren't stopping at Coney Island-Stillwell Av from 3:45 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday because of track replacement work.

For service to this station, take free shuttle buses, which are running between Bay 50 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.
For direct service between Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn and Coney Island, take trains.
trains are running between Norwood-205 St and Bay 50 St.

trains aren't running between Church Av and Coney Island-Stillwell Av in either direction from 12:15 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday because of signal modernization work .

When exiting the subway at Church Av or Coney Island-Stillwell Av, get a GO Ticket from a station agent to re-enter.
For direct service between Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn and Coney Island, take trains.
For service to W 8 St-NY Aquarium, take the .
trains are running between Jamaica-179 St and Church Av.

Shuttle, Manhattan and Queens

The Shuttle train between 21 St-Queensbridge and Lexington Av/63 St is no longer running after 11:45 p.m. Friday as we complete track replacement work and prepare to restore regular service, which will resume at 5 a.m. Monday.

Take these shuttle buses for service to/from 21 St-Queensbridge and Roosevelt Island.
For service to/from Lexington Av/63 St, take the . Or, use nearby Lexington Av/59 St during the day and evening.
Starting at 5 a.m. Monday, trains will no longer run on the line between Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Center and will resume stopping at 21 St-Queensbridge, Roosevelt Island, Lexington Av/63 St, and 57 St.

Other subway service changes

Manhattan-bound trains aren't stopping at Jackson Av from 4:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday and trains aren't running between E 180 St and Bowling Green in either direction Sunday morning until 10 a.m. This is because of monthly track maintenance.

Woodlawn-bound trains aren't stopping between 149 St-Grand Concourse and Burnside Av from 6:45 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday because of track maintenance.

From 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, downtown and local trains are running on the express track from 59 St-Columbus Circle to Canal St and downtown trains are running on the express track from 42 St/Port Authority Bus Terminal to Canal St. This is because of electrical work.

For service to/from bypassed stations, take an uptown train.

Uptown and local trains are running on the express track from 125 St to 168 St from 11:15 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of track maintenance.

For service to/from bypassed stations, take a downtown train.

trains, the Bronx and Manhattan

Manhattan-bound trains are running on the express track from Fordham Rd to 145 St from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday because of electrical maintenance.

For service to/from bypassed stations, take a Norwood-bound train.

trains, Brooklyn

Bay Ridge-bound and Coney Island/Bay 50 St-bound local trains are running on the express track from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to 36 St from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This is because of track maintenance.

For service to/from bypassed stations, take a local Manhattan-bound train.

trains, Queens

Forest Hills-bound and Jamaica-bound local trains are running on the express track from Queens Plaza to Forest Hills-71 Av 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This is because of track maintenance.

Long Island Rail Road service changes

Montauk branch.

Buses are replacing trains between Babylon and Montauk in both directions from 9 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Sunday because of crossing replacement work.

Consider using the Ronkonkoma Branch if you can, since buses will take up to 75 minutes longer than normal train trips.

Industrial action: Thursday 4th April - Tuesday 9th April

ASLEF trade union members will be taking strike action at train operators on the dates below:

Friday 5th April: Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, and West Midlands Railway
Saturday 6th April: Chiltern Railways, Great Western Railway, Heathrow Express, LNER, Northern, and TransPennine Express
Monday 8th April: c2c, Greater Anglia (including Stansted Express), Gatwick Express, Great Northern, South Western Railway (including Island Line), Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink.
There is also a London Underground strike scheduled for Monday 8th April.

In addition, ASLEF trade union members at all the above train operators will not be working overtime between Thursday 4th April and Saturday 6th April, and on Monday 8th April and Tuesday 9th April.

Strike action is expected to have a major impact on services on affected operators on the day, and may also impact early services the following morning. The overtime ban may also cause some further disruption.

Customers with Advance, Anytime or Off-Peak tickets for travel between Friday 5th April – Monday 8th April can instead use their tickets anytime from Thursday 4th April until Wednesday 10th April, provided you bought your ticket before 20th March. However please note that if your ticket includes travel on London Underground, this will not be valid for travel on any other day.

If you were making a return journey and only one leg of your journey is affected by the strikes, you can request a fee-free refund or change of journey for both legs of your trip online if all tickets remain unused. This also applies if you have two single tickets that together form a return journey.

Advance tickets

If you’ve booked with us and your train is cancelled or rescheduled, you’ll be entitled to a fee-free refund online.
Your ticket would also be valid on the train before or after your booked journey for the same train operator, but please be aware that with reduced services on strike days these trains may be very busy.
Your tickets may become valid on alternative travel dates. Details will be published on this page once confirmed. However please note that if your ticket includes travel on London Underground, this will not be valid for travel on any other day.
If you have two single tickets that together form a return journey and only one leg of your journey is affected by the strikes, you can request a fee-free refund or change of journey for both legs of your trip online if all tickets remain unused.

Flexible tickets

If you've booked with us and your ticket is for a strike day, you'll be entitled to a fee-free refund.

If you are making a return journey and only one leg of your journey is affected, you can request a fee-free refund for both legs of your trip online if all tickets remain unused . This also applies if you have two single tickets that together form a return journey.

Season tickets

If you are a Weekly Season ticket holder and purchased your ticket after the strikes were announced you will only be entitled to compensation if you actually travel and are affected by cancellation or disruption and the delay to your journey meets the Delay Repay threshold. You will need to contact the train operator to claim Delay Repay compensation.

If you have a Season ticket that is monthly or longer and you cannot travel due to timetable disruption on the day that any strike action has cancelled your service then you can claim 100% compensation for these days through Delay Repay. You will need to contact the train operator to claim Delay Repay compensation.

You can apply for a refund of your Season ticket. Refunds are calculated from the date you return your season ticket and will be the difference between the price you paid and the cost of a ticket or tickets for the period for which you have used the ticket up to and including the date you request a refund. Please note an admin fee will apply.

Change your ticket

You can currently request an exchange to your Advance ticket if you book with Trainline.

For eticket bookings you pay the difference between your original ticket and new ticket, plus a change fee. If your new ticket is cheaper than the original, then you only pay the fee but the difference will not be refunded.
For mobile and paper tickets we refund you whichever ticket is the lowest priced between your original or new ticket. From this we deduct a change fee based on the value of the ticket.

Travel by coach

During strike days, some routes may still be possible to travel by coach.

Guide on How to Travel from Helsinki to Lapland

A re you heading to Finland and wondering what the best way to travel from Helsinki to Lapland? Did you know that for most visitors to Finland, these are the two most visited areas? It makes sense as most visitors fly into Helsinki, spend a day or two and then head off into the vast wilderness of Finnish Lapland.

In this guide I will help you in your travel research by providing up to date information on how to travel to/from these regions of Finland, whether its by plane, train or even car.

One of the biggest factors in your decision about how to get from Helsinki to Lapland will be the amount of time you have and your budget. Below I go through the practical details on the three main transport options, providing the positives and negatives for each so you can make the most informed decision. Let get into it!

What are the airports in Lapland?

As I mentioned there are currently 5 airports in Lapland. Below are the airports with the main locations serviced from them.

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN)

Rovaniemi is the third busiest airport in Finland and is the most popular of the ones in Lapland. Located in the south of Lapland, just near the Arctic Circle, this airport is seen as the gateway to Santa Claus Village. Given the towns popularity, there are several flights a day between Helsinki and Rovaniemi. This is one of the few that also is international airport accepting flights from several major European cities.

In general, Rovaniemi can feel a quite commercial and crowded, especially during the peak winter season. This airport also serves as the hub for Pyhä and Salla which are popular for their natural beauty and skiing, both downhill and cross country.

Ivalo Airport (IVL)

Two popular destinations with skiers and snowboarders include Inari and Saariselka , which are both serviced by the Ivalo airport. The airport is within 30 minutes of both destinations and is the northernmost airport in Finland.

Kittilä Airport (KTT)

Kittila is one of the main airports in the northernmost region of Finland, and the only other accepting international flights. This airport services the popular ski area of Levi. Levi is a popular spot for families during the festive season, but is smaller and quieter than Rovaniemi. Additionally, the popular Snow Village can be found here.

Our favorite destination serviced by this airport is Muonio which is a laid back destination offering all the popular touristy activities found in Rovaniemi but without the crowds and is excellent for spotting the Northern Lights.

Kemi Airport (KEM)

Kemi-Tornio Airport is located on the coast of the Bay of Bothnia, serving travelers heading to Southern Lapland. Kemi has slowly become more popular in the tourist circuits for their magnificent Snow Castle that is built there every winter and for the famous Sampo icebreaker cruise.

Kuusamo Airport (KAO)

Lastly, the Kuusamo Airport serves one of Finland’s major holiday destinations Kuusamo, attracting almost a million tourists annually. Many of these arrive for skiing at nearby ski resorts, especially Ruka Ski Resort , one of the largest in Finland.

Flying from Helsinki to Lapland

Domestic flights from the capital Helsinki to Lapland airports are operated by Finnair. While the flights can be reasonably priced if booked well in advance, domestic flights on Finnair do impose an extra fee for checked luggage. Additionally, the new Finnair carry on limits are quite strict with a maximum of 8 kg for all carry on items combined. This means, that for most travelers, it makes most sense to upgrade to the main fare price which includes both carry on and checked baggage. Once you upgrade your flight, a round-trip flight will cost a minimum of €200. Note, if you are looking for cheap flights, sign up for Finnair’s email blast and keep an eye out for flash sales.

That said, this is still the quickest way to travel between Helsinki and Lapland. It can be cost effective if you are a solo traveler and/or traveling with extremely light luggage. However, it can be get expensive if you need to check a bag or are traveling in high season with several people

Traveling by Train from Helsinki to Lapland

Next we will move on to traveling by train from Helsinki to Lapland , which is the second most popular option.

I personally find travelling by train in Finland to be a wonderful experience and the most convenient way to get around the country. The trains are clean and reasonably reliable depending on weather conditions of course. Additionally, it is better for the environment and saves you money on accommodation if you can take an overnight train to travel while you sleep. All long-distance trains in Finland are operated by VR Train.

Day vs. Night Trains

The most popular train that visitors take to Lapland from Helsinki is the Santa Claus Express train which ends in Rovaniemi. It leaves close to midnight and arrives around 11 a.m. the next morning. If you are traveling with children, this train is great as the sleeper cabins are essentially sold as a two person cabin. Prices for an upstairs private compartment sleeper cabin which includes a private toilet run around 300 Euro one way. The train also has a restaurant car for snacks and meals while on the train. Note, Rovaniemi train tickets for the sleeper cars can sell out quickly, so book well in advance to ensure you have a cabin.

Another popular route is to Kolari, which is the northernmost railway station in Finland. Travel here from Helsinki takes approximately 14 hours. Boarding is around 7:45 p.m. in Helsinki with a 10 a.m. arrival. Even though it sounds like a long trip, it goes by quite quickly once you get settled in your sleeper cabin, grab some food from the restaurant car and then hit the sack.

If you are unable to secure a sleeper cabin, you can consider a day train. With free Wifi, power sockets and the ability to walk around, an 8 hour train would actually go quite quickly if you can keep yourself occupied! These tickets run around €75 per ticket during high season.

Take Your Car on the Train

For readers who live in Europe or have a rental car already booked, they can consider putting the vehicle on the train as well! These trains depart from Pasila Station and can be extremely handy if you have brought your car over from mainland Europe, but don’t want to drive all the way to Lapland. This is not cheap, but is a dobale option to ensure you have more access to explore around Lapland.

Train Stations in Lapland

There are many train stations in Lapland that I can’t list them all, but the main ending/starting point for the major lines include Kolari as the furthest north, Rovaniemi and Kemijarvi in the east.

Kolari is in the far north of Finland, northeast of Rovaniemi, and very close to the Swedish border. This station is perfect for those traveling to Levi or Muonio. You can reserve a shared taxi or bus from the station to both locations.

Kemijärvi is located east of Rovaniemi and from here you can easily access Salla and Pyhä.

Overall, I personally feel that if you are traveling with others or even on your own that taking an overnight train to or from Lapland is a great option. Train travel is scenic, cost effective if you have a family or a lot of luggage and you also have the option of taking a vehicle. The negatives are that it does take a long time and there are times that the trains leave late at night making it awkward for families with smaller children.

Driving from Helsinki to Lapland by Car

For many travelers further afield, this would mean renting a car and needing to return it either in Lapland or back to Helsinki which can be quite an expense.

I am not sure I would recommend this option for many, but if you have your car and you are confident on driving on the right hand side of the road, in snow or inclimate weather, you will most likely be fine.

But you must be aware that this journey is at least 800 kilometers and can take around 10 hours. That said, the journey up to Rovaniemi is along one main road and the views will be stunning for much of the way.

In general, I’d only advise driving to Lapland from Helsinki if you’re touring elsewhere in Finland, have your own vehicle and have at least a couple of weeks here to make it worthwhile and cost-effective.

Important Information for Your Finland Trip

When is the best time to visit finland.

In reality, you can visit Finland at any time of the year as there are a multitude of activities to suit any weather condition. That said, in my opinion, the best time to visit Finland is definitely during the winter months between December and February. This is when you will see the most beautiful winter wonderland landscapes and you have a great chance to see the aurora borealis. Note, it is also the coldest time of the year, so you will need to prepare for that!

What is the best way to get to Finland?

Finnair offers direct flights to Helsinki Airport from all over the world, including from here in Los Angeles. The international flights are on newer Airbus A350 planes which have ample legroom, flight cameras and more. Subscribe to their newsletter for deals and special offers if this is a trip you are looking to plan far in advance.

If you are in mainland Europe, you can also make your way overland to Tallinn and take the Viking Express over to Helsinki for a very affordable rate. Note, this is also a great day trip idea from Helsinki.

Where do you recommend to stay in Helsinki?

There are so many amazing options to stay in Helsinki. I think where you stay is dependent on what you want out of your visit. During my stay in the city I was leaving on an early morning ferry and arriving late at night from the airport so I chose the Noli Studio Apartments which were cheap, clean and convenient to everywhere I wanted to go. There are several of them located throughout the city, so pay attention to the neighborhood that you wish to be in!

If you want a little more luxury and don’t mind being a little further out, consider the Clarion Hotel which is a favorite for repeat visitors to the city.

What do I need to pack for Finland?

Layers is the short answer. The longer answer will depend on what time of year you are visiting. Assuming you visit during the high season of winter, you will need to pack a lot of warm breathable layers such as merino wool . Overall, I would say to focus on layers, good boots that have room for several pairs of socks, good gloves or mittens and a warm hat.

It's important to know if there are disruptions or planned works on the tracks and stations that may affect your travel plans. Some railway companies offer dedicated pages with updates and detailed maps. Below you can find the details, per country. A few railway companies only offer this information in their own language. We've also included those links, as you may want to use a translation plugin to read the updates.

We do our best to keep the information on this page accurate and up-to-date. However, we cannot influence train disruptions or strikes, and there are occasions when a trade union cancels a planned strike action at the last minute without our knowledge.

Please take into account the travel restrictions being applied in some countries in Europe. Follow the updates regarding the COVID-19 outbreak and its effects on train travel on this page .

Ongoing strikes & disruptions

Uk: rail strike from 4 to 9 april.

The British National locomotive drivers' union, ASLEF, has announced strike action from 4th to 9th April that may cause train delays and cancellations on your rail journey within the UK.

Since the strike affects different rail operators on different dates, we recommend checking the strike announcement on the National Rail website for more information. In addition to this, the affected rail operators will have an overtime ban in place from 4th to 6th April and from 8th to 9th April.

Please check the National Rail timetable shortly before departing for your planned journey for up-to-date train schedules.

Delay compensation: Interrail travellers with an activated travel day on any of the affected strike dates may request compensation here .

Norway train route suspended

Rail traffic is currently suspended between Oslo and Bergen in Norway until further notice due to a freight train derailment on 22 March. Replacement buses are operational between Bergen and Voss.

To know more about the traffic suspension, please check the VY website and check the VY timetable for up-to-date train schedules shortly before departing for your planned journey.

Long-term strikes & disruptions

The national railway carrier of Norway, VY, has announced that the rail route between Narvik in Norway and Abisko in Sweden is disrupted due to a previous derailment in Vassijaure in Sweden since December 2023.

The Swedish Transport Administration's latest forecast is that the track will not open for passenger traffic between Björnfjell – Björkliden at least until June. For details about replacement buses on the full route between Narvik – Björnfjell – Björkliden – Abisko and further, please read the VY disruption announcement .

We recommend checking our timetable to plan your train journeys accordingly.

Trenitalia, the Italian national rail carrier, has announced that traffic is suspended between Benevento and Ariano Irpino in Italy from 12 March due to a technical problem to the line caused by a landslide. High-speed and Intercity trains may experience route restrictions, cancellations and bus substitutions on the affected routes with significant delays.

The main routes affected are:

Milan – Lecce
Rome – Bari
Naples – Bari

For the details on the routes disrupted and the bus substitutions offered, please read the Trentitalia traffic announcement (only in Italian). The carrier also recommends rescheduling your trip accordingly, if needed. Please check Trenitalia's timetable for up-to-date train times before departing for your planned journey.

The technicians are working on the site to allow the regular resumption of circulation and traffic is forecasted to be restored in 30 days or as soon as safety conditions are guaranteed.

The French national railways has announced that rail traffic between Modane and St-Michel-Valloire will be disrupted for the time being due to a landslide that was reported in the French Alps on 27th August. This would impact train journeys on the route between Paris – Turin – Milan for the next several months. Read more about it on the SNCF website .

From 10th January, TGV trains will operate between Paris to Milan with a replacement bus from St Jean de Maurienne to Oulx after which passengers can continue their journey to Milan by train. The travel schedule including the replacement bus service with a slightly longer travel time will be updated on the Interrail Timetable and can also be found on the SNCF timetable . Your reservations will be valid for the whole route, including the replacement bus service. For more information, see this SNCF document .

If you're planning to travel on the impacted route before 10th January, we recommend using an alternative route via Zurich. Please note that the route from Paris – Zurich – Milan is currently facing a delay due to the closure of the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland (check post below for more information). Please make sure to check the SBB timetable shortly before departure of your planned journeys for up-to-date information.

The Swiss National Railways has announced that a freight train derailment on 10th August in the Gotthard Base Tunnel located on the route between Zurich to Milan has caused severe track damage. SBB expects that the tunnel will only be available for passenger train travel from September 2024.

As a result, the direct international Eurocity train will now take the scenic route across the mountains instead of the tunnel, resulting in 1 hour longer travel times. For this reason, SBB recommends catching a 1-hour earlier train from Zurich or Basel so as to not miss any further connecting trains:

Eurocity Zurich/Basel – Milan

For all other international and domestic connections, there are direct trains every 30 minutes from Zurich to Lugano taking the scenic route instead of the tunnel. In Lugano or Chiasso, one can change trains for destinations such as Como and Milan. In addition, many local Trenord trains run from Lugano and Chiasso into Italy without requiring any seat reservations.

If you happened to miss your connecting train because of this disruption, please get a new seat reservation arranged locally at a train station in Lugano, Chiasso or Italy.

Check the SBB timetable for the most up-to-date traffic information. The Interrail timetable is up to date, but does not have real-time traffic information for last minute updates.

Due to Storm Hans on the 23rd of August, the main railway line between Oslo and Trondheim is still closed. In short, a bridge collapsed between Lillehammer and Dombås; therefore, normal traffic will not resume for the foreseeable future.

Some trains have been rerouted, affecting multiple railway lines, and replacement buses are servicing other routes.

Travel information

High-speed trains and reservations.

International travel between the UK and Europe: Pass holder seats can sell out quickly for the high-speed Eurostar service. Check out the alternative route from London to Europe without the Eurostar .

International travel between the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland: the high-speed trains (ICE and IC Berlin) and the Nightjet Zurich are extremely busy this summer - consider using regional trains instead.

Spain and Portugal: seat reservations are mandatory and can be pre-reserved by phone 3 days in advance or booked locally at a train station.

Tips for high season

Due to the exceptional high season in Europe, trains are more crowded than usual, and seat reservations for high-speed trains are limited.

Here are a few tips to help you travel smoothly this summer:

Choose trains that don't require a reservation - tap on "Options" and "No seat reservations required" in the Rail Planner app or select the 'No seat reservations required' filter when using the timetable .

Bosnia-Herzegovina

Warning - disrupted international connections:

It is possible to travel between Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia with a seasonal train connecting Sarajevo and Ploče. This train runs only during weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) between July 1st and September 11th.

Trains to Zagreb and other parts of Croatia are suspended until further notice.

International trains between Bosnia Herzegovina and Serbia are suspended until further notice. It is possible to travel to/from Bosnia Herzegovina to Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia by international bus . The tickets for such bus journeys are not covered by the Pass.

International connections from Bulgaria to Greece and Serbia are suspended until further notice.

The Sofia - Istanbul connection has resumed circulation on the 25th of April, 2022.

There are different international buses connecting Bulgaria to neighbouring countries. Please notice these buses are not included in the Pass.

It is possible to travel between Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina with a seasonal train connecting Ploče and Sarajevo. This train runs only during weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) between July 1st and September 11th.

Unfortunately, international trains connecting Croatia to Serbia are suspended until further notice. The available international buses serving these routes are not covered by the Pass.

Czech Republic

You can find details about both domestic and international disruptions affecting the Czech rail network on this page . Unfortunately, this information is only available in Czech; we recommend contacting the Czech railways for more details if you're planning to travel on any of the affected routes.

The Danish railway company (DSB) has planned track work which will affect both regular trains and their S-tog system, including a few main routes, such as Copenhagen - Aarhus. You can see the complete list on this page of their website.

You can check live updates on train times and replacement buses of the Estonian railway network (Elron) via  this page .

When travelling between Estonia and Latvia by rail, it is necessary to change trains at the Valga border station. It is advised to check the timetables of both the Estonian and the Latvian Railways.

For information about upgrades, maintenance and construction works on the French railways, you can visit this page on their website , where they share all the recent updates and maps of their rail network.

The extensive German rail network is under constant maintenance and expansion. The German national railway company, Deutsche Bahn (DB), dedicates an entire section of their website to delays, track works and passenger rights. Unfortunately, this information is only available in German - for the maintenance/engineering works, you can check this page , while their online timetables have real-time updates on train delays/cancellations.

Great Britain

The National Rail website contains up to date information shared by the British railway companies. On this page you can see updates about current disruptions and traffic status in general. To check if your trip may be affected by future engineering work, please check this page .

You can follow updates on international train times of the Greek railway network TrainOSE via  this page .

International train connections from Greece to Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Turkey are suspended until further notice.

You can still use a Global pass or a Greek Islands Pass to travel between Greece and Italy. More information can be found here .

Another option is to travel by international buses. The tickets for such bus journeys are not covered by the Pass.

Finally, Pass holders are entitled to a discount when travelling with some of our benefits partners on alternative ferry routes.

Some of the Hungarian rail network, both international and domestic, is or will be affected by minor works on the tracks, which may cause some trains to run on modified schedules.The Hungarian railways share the details on this page (only in Hungarian).

Because of construction works, international connections between Hungary and Serbia are currently suspended until further notice. There are international buses connecting Serbia to these neighbouring countries (unfortunately, not covered or discounted for Pass holders).

While detailed information is only available in Italian, you can still check if your travel plans may be affected by planned works: on this page , you can search for disruptions using either start and end dates and/or the region in which you will be travelling.

International train connections from Latvia to Lithuania are suspended until further notice.

When travelling between Latvia and Estonia by rail, it is necessary to change trains at the Valga border station. It is advised to check the timetables of both the Latvian and Estonian Railways.

Latvia – Sweden: Riga - Stockholm ( Tallink Silja Oy Ferries , 20-50% discount)

Netherlands

North Macedonia

Warning - potential disruptions due to the earthquakes in February

Due to the devastating impact of the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, we advise you to travel with caution if you intend to use your Eurail Pass to travel to central or southern Turkey on TCDD’s rail network for the foreseeable future.

General information

In Turkey, the central-southern part of the country has been the worst hit. It is believed that a total of 1275km of railway lines have been seriously affected by the earthquake in the Kahramanmaraş region of central Turkey, including damage to 446 bridges, 6161 culverts, and 175 tunnels.

The railway track is twisted and damaged, particularly on the Toprakkale - Narlı, Narlı - Malatya, and Narlı - Gaziantep sections of the network, while ten substations providing electric power for rail lines are out of action. In addition, there are reports that part of the 25.5km Gaziray suburban commuter railway has collapsed.

The Istanbul - Sofia connection has resumed circulation on the 25th of April, 2022. During summer season, a daily night train connects Istanbul with Bucharest.

International connections between Turkey and Greece are currently suspended until further notice.

There are international buses connecting Turkey to both Bulgaria and Greece. Unfortunately, these buses are not covered or discounted for Pass holders.

Here are some things you can expect on your train journey in Canada.

1. Train travel brings surprises

Slow travel is gaining in popularity, as people realize the “getting there” can be the best part of a trip. This is especially true on a train.

“On our long distance routes , admiring the scenery in an unhurried way is part of what makes traveling by train so special,” according to VIA Rail Canada.

Even a local Canadian Insider, such as Natalie Nicholls, sales manager with Fresh Tracks Canada, can be amazed by the scenery.

“Traveling by train feels like a behind-the-scenes look at Canada,” says Nicholls. “I’m from the prairies and didn’t find them that gorgeous, but that was because I was always driving on the highway. On a train, you get to relax while you see scenery inaccessible by car — it makes you feel grateful.”

2. Know your train’s route

Most train trips are offered as one-way journeys. While return trips are always possible, many people choose to fly one way to enjoy the novelty of the rail experience.

Take time to understand your options. When traversing the Canadian Rockies , for example, rail will take visitors to or through the area, but not around. Heavy packers beware: if you’re on a sleeper train, most only allow one carry-on-sized bag, with the option to check the rest.

“Pack strategically, but don’t let that scare you,” says Lucy Fenn, operations specialist with Fresh Tracks Canada. “All you need is a small duffel bag, laid-back outfits and comfy shoes or hard-soled slippers. Go for comfort — you don’t have to dress to the nines.”

Bring a sweater and layers for when it gets cold and, as most cars have shared bathroom facilities, pack pyjamas you wouldn’t mind being spotted in while ducking down the hall at night.

5. Load up on entertainment for your train trip

Slow travel means lots of opportunities to relax. Entertainment is essential, as most of the trips will not have wifi. Along the passages where you might not be focusing on the scenery, use the time to reconnect with tactile forms of play, such as games, books and movies.

“It’s amazing how quickly you can go through books when you have so much downtime,” says Nicholls. “Do overpack entertainment, download movies and make sure you have things you enjoy to choose from.”

6. Get into the history or culture of your train route

Enrich your travel experience by theming your reading (or viewing) material to the geographic history of the area.

“There are many good books themed around trains and frontiersmen coming across the country,” says Fenn. “The railway has quite a dark history, from the gold rush to how it was created, and some people love learning about that sense of place.”

To enhance the journey, The Rocky Mountaineer gives onboard commentary, providing insight into the history, culture and geography along its routes.

7. Consider an upgrade on your train trip

While single travelers often select a cabin for one, it can be a tight squeeze, especially at night.

“As a single traveler, it was well worth it when I upgraded to a cabin for two for comfort,” says Nicholls.

Other ways to personalize your trip range from upgrading to luxury in VIA Rail’s Prestige Sleeper Class (available on The Canadian), to making arrangements to celebrate a special occasion — from birthdays to anniversaries — with the help of the crew. Look into customized experiences to make your journey unforgettable.

8. Plan to be social on the train

A treasured part of rail travel is the ability to meet other travelers.

Unlike flight culture, where people stick to their seats, train travel often involves multi-day trips, with travelers mingling throughout common areas and leisurely enjoying meals in the dining cars before relaxing in their private cabins. While the pandemic has changed some aspects of its social nature, rail travel is still a fantastic way to meet others, so come prepared with curiosity and questions.

9. Prepare to tip

Tipping is always in fashion with customized service, though travelers are often unsure what’s appropriate for a multi-day journey. A few guidelines can help.

“Plan to leave a couple bucks on the table for each meal,” says Fenn, about traveling on VIA Rail. “For turn-down service, when staff come to switch your cabin from seating to sleeping, it’s appropriate to leave something like $15.”

Some VIA Rail trips include staff changeovers at a mid-point, so if you’ve had a positive experience with a crew member, thank them early rather than waiting until the end of the trip.

When traveling on the Rocky Mountaineer, gratuities for your onboard hosts are often included in your package price. These hosts serve your meals and drinks, as well as providing information and storytelling along the rail route.

10. Keep up to date with train travel information

It’s no secret travel has shifted, from pandemic to foreign restrictions. As many trips are booked well in advance, it's important to stay up to date with the latest international advisories before you leave home.

“The best approach is to stay aware,” says Fenn. “It’s a good bet to bring several masks, extra sanitizer and creature comforts like essential oils to freshen your mask, or warm socks and fresh shirts to change into for dinner.”

If you’re traveling out of country, consider travelers insurance, currency conversions and any important documents you’ll need prior to boarding. Your travel advisor will also send you a package with details about everything you need to know.

What's in Metra's new train cars, and when they'll debut

Yes to outlets on trains, so no more worries about your phone dying. No to flip seats. And, yes to video screens with PSAs.

Metra directors took a huge step toward upgrading the agency's antique fleet Jan. 13, in approving a contract for 500 multilevel railcars from Alstom Transportation Inc. The plan is to initially purchase 200 railcars for $845 million, with a Metra option to buy the remaining 300.

But riders won't be sitting pretty until 2024, when the first contingent of cars hit the tracks, with the full base order complete 30 months later. Why so long? We asked Metra Communications Director Michael Gillis to answer that question and others.

"There are several factors that contribute to the production time," Gillis said. "First, these are not an off-the-shelf design, and there still is some design work to complete. Second, there are numerous tests that need to be completed and regulatory rules to meet. Sub-vendors also need to ramp up their production, and again, sometimes components are not off-the-shelf technology, either. Integrating all the various systems in the new cars also can be time-consuming."

If all 500 railcars are purchased, the contract will reach $1.8 billion. Why are railcars so expensive?

"As for the price, these are large, complicated assets designed to last 40 years or more. Based on our research about other recent car purchases by other entities, we are paying about what we expected - in other words, we are paying the going rate. And while 500 cars is a large order for Metra, it is a somewhat smaller quantity and that could impact the price," Gillis explained.

Metra has 11 train lines. Which routes will get the new cars first?

"We have not determined that yet but they can be used on any line except the Metra Electric, which has a new fleet of cars already," Gillis answered.

Can I charge my smartphone on the train in the new cars and will there be Wi-Fi?

"There will be outlets at nearly every seat (possibly only a few jump seats won't have them). Wi-Fi is an option but we haven't decided yet whether to choose it," Gillis noted.

One feature of Metra's vintage railcars is the ability to flip the seats. Will the new models provide that flexibility?

"No," Gillis said.

Metra has promised video screens in the new railcars. What will riders see on the screens?

"The main function of the screens will be to provide up-to-date train/travel information. We may choose to use them for other purposes, too," Gillis added.

One more thing

Metra planners had expected to raise $334.3 million from fares from January through November 2020, but that amount was just $100.5 million - short by $233.8 million because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the railroad's latest numbers show.

So how can Metra afford these new cars? Operating money that pays for salaries and diesel fuel, for example, is separate from the capital budget, which will cover the railcars.

The state's $45 billion six-year capital program, plus federal aid, will help fund the purchase.

Officials also expect more comfortable railcars that are less likely to malfunction - and therefore decrease delays - should help build back ridership decimated by the pandemic.

The bank holiday travel chaos continues as drivers face up to 20-mile-long queues on major motorways as well as two-hour delays at the Port of Dover.

Around 2.6 million car journeys were expected to be made on Good Friday as the Easter getaway got underway, with holiday traffic causing “significant” congestion around the M25 and roads in the South West and South East by lunchtime. Queues of 15 to 20 miles were seen on the M4 and M5 interchange near Bristol, which is adding 45 minutes to journey times.

Meanwhile, the Port of Dover warned of two-hour delays on Friday afternoon. Huge queues could be seen building up there after ferry company DFDS reported on Thursday that its services were running with delays “due to strong winds in the Channel”.

And once again there are long waits for French passport control at the Kent port, where frontier formalities are carried out before boarding ferries to France. Since Brexit, officials are required to scrutinise and stamp UK passports.

It comes after plans were dashed as strong winds from the Spanish-named Storm Nelson hit the start of the wet long weekend, forcing the cancellation of trains, with almost 200 flood warnings and alerts remaining in place across the UK on Friday.

Drivers are being warned of chaos on roads over the Easter weekend, with as many as 18.5 million car trips planned at the start of school holidays .

Those setting out on their journeys are likely to encounter delays from Thursday 28 March, when children break up at the end of term, into Good Friday, with one specialist warning that it could be “carmageddon” for those making their getaways.

The overall travel picture should not be as bad as in 2023, when the Easter weekend coincided with strikes that led to the cancellation and delays of dozens of flights and widespread rail engineering work.

Drivers have been warned of huge traffic delays as millions of people are set to hit the road this bank holiday weekend.

The RAC warned journeys on the road could take up to twice as long as usual as 14 million people are expected to set off.

“With Easter falling earlier than usual at the start of the school holidays, it could be carmageddon for holidaymakers,” an RAC breakdown spokesperson said.

Journeys on the M25 between the M23 for Gatwick and the M1 in Hertfordshire are expected to take more than two hours, while the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton is also likely to be congested.

Windy weather in Cornwall as millions head off on getaways

Around 14 million Britons are due to hit the road today as many head off on their Easter getaways.

Many will be heading for staycations in popular UK holiday spots such as Devon and Cornwall. However, pictures from Cornwall this morning show some windy and gloomy conditions.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for wind today in some parts of the south of England and showers are expected throughout the weekend.

Easter travel chaos: how bad will it be?

The great Easter getaway could see travellers caught up in delays by road , ferry, rail and air.

In a normal year there would be a gap between most schools breaking up and the long weekend. But with Easter falling so early the two are combined.

My colleague Simon Calder has explained the Easter travel situation and how bad it might be:

Chaos on Great Western Railway

On one of the busiest days of the year for rail travel, flooding is causing chaos on the Great Western Railway between London Paddington, southwest England, Bristol and South Wales.

The line between Reading and Taunton is partially blocked with disruption expected until the rest of the day. GWR said: “We are sorry for the delay to your journey today. Flooding on the railway between Reading and Taunton has resulted in some signal failures along this route. Network Rail are working to rectify the faults. This means that our high speed services between Reading and Taunton have to run at reduced speeds through the affected areas. The line towards Taunton is now blocked due to further flooding.

“Our high speed services from London Paddington towards Devon and Cornwall will be diverted between Reading and Taunton which will add delay to your journey.”

Unfortunately the main diversion route is also experiencing problems. High-speed trains heading west from Swindon in Wiltshire to Bristol and Cardiff are having to reduce their speed from 125mph to just 5mph as a result of flooding on the line.

“Trains may be delayed by up to 30 minutes, cancelled or diverted as a result,” says National Rail.

Severe delays on the M1

There are reports of severe delays on the M1 northbound between junctions J25 and J27.

According to AA, motorists are facing delays of 44 minutes with an average speed of five mph.

It is expected to clear later this morning.

Further train cancellations and delays

Extreme flooding is wreaking havoc in the South West today as several lines are forced to close on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Great Western Railway said all lines are closed between Westbury and Swindon until at least 2pm.

“Due to flooding across the railway network this morning, we need to reutilise the Melksham line for other purposes,” it said.

“As a result trains between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham are suspended until further notice.”

There have also been delays and cancellations between Swindon and Bristol Parkway, Westbury and Weymouth, Reading and Taunton and Sindon and Chippenham.

Rail passengers warned not to travel as London Euston shuts over bank holiday weekend

Rail passengers have been warned to “travel either side of the Easter weekend” as London Euston is set to shut for the entire weekend.

Major improvements to track mean the busy station will be closing for all but Overground services from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

Network Rail has advised travellers to avoid the West Coast main line during the bank holiday, adding that engineering works between London and Milton Keynes. will also impact southern routes to and from London.

Replacement bus services will be in effect on various routes, and passengers have been urged to check their journeys in advance as they might face longer travel times.

No trains will be running from London Euston as the busy station will be closed for all but Overground services.
