Did you know that Canada and the USA share the longest international border in the world? At 8,893 kilometres, the USA and Canada border is a long stretch. It extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, with a squiggle in the north where the US State of Alaska and Canada’s province of British Columbia and Yukon Territories meet. 

There are over 100 US-Canada border crossings on land. One of the world’s most famous waterfalls, Niagara Falls, straddles both countries but there are plenty more fascinating places to holiday in the USA and Canada on a two-nation vacation.

8 Canadian provinces and territories share a border with 13 USA states, which means there are plenty of great places to visit on a cross-border vacation. 

Although the two countries are by no means, identical twins, Canadians and Americans share many similar characteristics, from breathtaking scenery to similar European exploration and settlement history, wildlife, geology and much, much more.

Canada is an easy country to explore independently and safe to travel alone. Driving across Canada will allow you to stop wherever and whenever you want.

1- Niagara Falls Canada and USA

Niagara Falls is a landmark in Canada and the USA.

The Niagara River is the border between the USA and Canada.

You can visit both sides by driving or walking across the Rainbow Bridge. 

Also known as the Freedom Trail, both the USA and Canada offer special tours highlighting spots along the route.

The Niagara River and Gorge represented the final passage to freedom to Canada from the US for thousands of slaves.

By 1844, approximately 40,000 American slaves fled bondage by taking the “Underground Railroad” north, to Canada.

The perilous journey involved following the North Star, sleeping out in the open or in safe houses, where kindly, anti-slavery families would take them in and see them on their way.

In fact, there are many plaques and displays honouring the history of African-American slaves who used the Underground Railway between 1793 and 1865 along the Niagara Parkway.

2- Alaska and the Yukon

There are two border crossings between Alaska and Yukon.

• Little Gold Creek on the Top of the World Highway (Hwy 9) has seasonal services 
• Beaver Creek on the Alaska Highway (Hwy 1) operates 24 hours a day 

Alaska cruises are rightfully famous, and departures from Vancouver where vessels navigate north up the Inland Passage to that state represent an internationally renowned twinning.

However, while visiting Skagway in Alaska, you can hop on the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad and roll into the Yukon Territories in Canada.

As you wend your way along a sometimes hair-raising track (with stunning photo ops of the train hugging craggy mountainsides), you can imagine how dreams were made and lost here.

That’s because this railbed was constructed by 35,000 workers in 1898 when Gold Fever was infecting the west with high hopes.

WP&YR forms a historic rail link between nations, one which pioneered international, inter-modal ship/rail/truck transport.

The railway extends from Skagway 177 kilometres inland, where you can get your passport stamped at a modest USA and Canada border crossing.

Known as “the railway built of gold” the impossible-seeming track at one point ascends 914 metres in 32 km (20 miles).

Jaw-dropping scenery awaits and at Lake Bennett, you can explore during the 45-minute stop.

It allows you to take a self-guided walking tour to view part of the Chilkoot Trail, where gold-seekers ascended this gruelling trail in their search for fortune.

The Chilkoot Trail is a National Historic Site managed by Parks Canada.

Terminating in Carcross, a station and service town, here you will find shops where you can purchase unique First Nations art, visit an “old-time” General Store and connect with the highway. 

This is the gateway to Kluane National Park and Reserve, Dawson City and lots of cool things to do in Whitehorse (the territory’s capital).  

Also note that Dawson City is part of Parks Canada’s Klondike National Historic Sites. So, the railway forms a pivotal, intriguing link into the interior of North America.

3- Alberta and Montana

Alberta and Montana share a few USA and Canada border crossings. The main ones are:

• Del Bonita on Hwy 62 operates 24 hours a day
• Chief Mountain is open during the day (access off of Hwy 6)  

Alberta and Montana have lots in common, especially when considering these two glorious mountain parks, which together (in 1932) were twinned, forming Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

This UNESCO initiative was created because this region of North America represents a special zone called the “Crown of the Continent Ecosystem”.

It’s home to unique animals and plants, all living in a relatively small ecozone.

In April 2017, the twin parks were designated as a Dark Sky Park, part of a network of international DSPs protecting areas with little ambient (artificial) light.

It’s the first International Dark Sky Park that spans an international border.

This means fabulous celestial observations are possible, with inky-black skies permitting glorious constellation, planet and galaxy views.

Parks Canada has special astronomy events.

Moreover, as a keen horsewoman, Alpine Stables offers fantastic trail rides on horseback or, which is what I did, several-day expeditions (pre-registration is a must for these).

Instead of driving, hardy hikers can access both parks via backcountry trails. 

4- Vermont and Quebec

The Vermont and Quebec border is 145 kilometres (90 miles) long and has 15 border crossings. Popular places to cross the USA and Canada border in these two states are:

• Derby Line/Stanstead operates 24 hours a day
• Highgate Springs/Saint-Armand operates 24 hours a day

The State of Vermont celebrates 23 villages as being particularly distinctive from a historical viewpoint, a list which includes the capital, Montpelier.

However, don’t miss twinning Vermont’s Green Mountains with several days in Canada’s Eastern Townships.

For years, this region has been the  playground of Montrealers  because urbanites find tranquility among this part of the province’s pretty villages which are connected through quiet paved roads.

What’s special in 2017 is “Cantons-de-l’Est” as the region is known in French, is celebrating nine villages with the “Coeur Villageois” (Heart of the Villages) signature logo to mark the route.

Sutton (the Mountain Village) joins Piopolis, Eastman, Danville, Coaticook, Cookshire-Eaton, Mansonville, Lac Brome, and Dunham. 

There’s a historic link between Vermont and Eastern Township villages such as Sutton, one of the Coeur Villageois.

During the American War of Independence (1775-1783), people loyal to the Crown were known as United Empire Loyalists.

By 1802, roughly 9,000 UELs had fled America and settled the Eastern Townships, where 170 had relocated to the Township of Sutton.

Today, Sutton is one of my favourite towns in this picturesque region because forested mountains surround it. In autumn, when the colours of deciduous leaves have turned gold, scarlet, crimson and orange, it’s fantastical.

Nearby, indulge your foodie soul by driving the new Gourmet Tour featuring 5-course tasting menus and three chocolate museums.

Or, drive or cycle the Footsteps of the Pioneers.

For a very different eco-lodging which features cycling aloft on a bicycle contraption suspended along a 1,000-metre circuit in the forest canopy visit Au Diable Vert and go on the VéloVolant.

Here stay in whimsical cabins tucked just inside the forest, where views give you a sweeping vista of the Vermont Green Mountains immediately to the south.

USA and Canada Great Lakes Cities

5- chicago and toronto.

Both Chicago and Toronto border two of North America’s five Great Lakes: Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario, respectively.

So both enjoy refreshing lake breezes and waterfront developments, including walking trails and paddling outings.

Another fantastic link is the architecture, art and cultural attractions.

In particular, go to immerse yourself in the culture of these cities.

Chicago offers architectural tours by kayak — an especially fun way to appreciate the “permanent art” of buildings.

Ontario’s capital city, Toronto, has the beautiful Toronto Islands.

They form a shelter to the city’s harbour, which you can explore by canoe or kayak from the mainland or hop on the ferry to cross to explore the islands themselves.

Tip? Plan to either return or visit the islands at sunset: the skyline is an architectural marvel.

In Toronto, there’s a wide array of cultural venues and activities that are fantastic. Toronto is also the best party city in Canada if you’re looking for nightlife. 

My favourites? The Art Gallery of Ontario for an introduction to Canada’s famous Group of Seven painters. Don’t miss the Bata Shoe Museum, where you can view ancient people’s footwear through to samples of celebrities such as Madonna’s fave footwear.

USA and Canada – French Connection

6- nova scotia and louisiana.

Although not bordering, a unique French connection exists between Nova Scotia and Louisiana, a southern US state.

In the late 1600s, many French emigrants settled what would become Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces .

Calling themselves Acadians, they developed productive farms and bustling hamlets. Life progressed well for this industrious group, until in 1754, the British demanded they sign an oath of allegiance to the Crown.

Some did – but these pacifist settlers refused to pledge to fight First Nations or French.

One year later, the Brits gathered “les Acadiens” together and forcibly evicted them from their homes. Families were split up, and people resettled along the Atlantic Seaboard and down to Louisianna.

The French influence in the Lafayette region of that state is fascinating, where the refugees became known as “Cajuns.”

Another city to visit, New Orleans, is legendary for its jazz musicians — yet another reason to visit and embrace French USA.

Famed American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow penned Evangeline, romanticizing the story of this lady and her beloved Gabriel who were cruelly separated during the expulsion of Acadians.

Her memory is honoured in Nova Scotia, which named a scenic drive in her name.

The Evangeline Trail takes us to Grand Pré National Historic Site, where the landscape once saw a thriving Acadian settlement that became regarded as the homeland of the Acadians.

Hot tip? To understand the history of French settlement in Canada, don’t miss a trip to Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, because of it being the only walled city in North America.

Ontario's Niagara Horseshoe Falls

Niagara Parkway: Buffalo, New York to Toronto, Ontario

Just across the border from Buffalo, New York, lies the city of Niagara Falls , best known for being the home of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. For those looking to extend their trip, travel along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which will take you from Niagara to downtown Toronto in 90 minutes (if traffic is flowing smoothly).

Where to stop:  Follow the Niagara parkway to the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you'll spot preserved 19th-century colonial architecture. The Niagara region is also known for having dozens of wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail , and some are as close as 10 minutes to the border.

Where to eat:  The family-run  Ravine Vineyard Estate  has an on-site restaurant and general store-style gift shop offering a la carte selections, and pantry picnic essentials to stock up on between wine tastings.   

Where to stay:  Charming Niagara-on-the-Lake has several landmark properties like the  Harbour House Hotel and Prince of Wales Hotel . If your road trip takes you to Toronto, continue your trip back in time by staying at One King West Hotel & Residence , inside Toronto’s original Dominion Bank skyscraper, which dates back to 1914. 

Lake Louise, Banff

Icefields Parkway: Montana to Banff National Park, Alberta

The quickest way from the American border to Banff National Park in Alberta is to drive through British Columbia. From northern Montana, head north on the BC-93 highway driving through the small towns along the way. The Icefields Parkway links Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Jasper National Park , and whirls drivers through the Rocky Mountains, beside glacier-like icefields and along the Continental Divide. 

Where to stop:  On your way to Banff National Park you'll pass though several mountain towns brimming with outdoor activities, like skiing and waterfalls to visit; Cranbrook, Fernie, and Kimberly are all just off the BC-93 and worth pulling over for. Stop by the village of Radium Hot Springs , which is open to visitors year-round, for a dip in the Lussier Natural Hot Springs, or one of their thermal pools.  

Where to eat:  During your drive on the Icefields Parkway, dine beside the Columbia Ice Field at the  Glacier View Lodge . From the on-site Altitude Restaurant you’ll have spectacular dinner views of the mountains, or you can visit the more-casual Chalet for lunch fare. 

Where to stay:  Known as the “Castle in the Rockies,” the Fairmont Banff Springs was built as one of the original Canadian Pacific Railway hotels in 1886. Today, Fairmont also operates other historic properties in the region that include the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge .

Fundy Coastal Trail: Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick

Explore New Brunswick's 286-mile drive along the Bay of Fundy coastline to see the world’s highest tides up-close. Depending on the time of day, you can marvel at the tides two ways: by kayaking on the water when it's at its peak, or by walking on the sprawling ocean floor when the waves have recessed. The Bay of Fundy can be seen from Saint John to Moncton, or plan a visit to the otherworldly Hopewell Rocks , which were formed by tidal erosions and stand alone when the tide goes out.

Where to stop:  St. Andrews by the sea is the midway point between Maine and the Bay of Fundy. For a short visit, wander down the town's main strip and along its historic pier; if you have some more time, wander through the 27-acre  Kingsbrae Garden  or play 18 holes at the award-winning  Algonquin Golf Course . 

Where to eat:  Dine at the  Saint John City Market , where you'll find locally caught seafood and other seasonal goods. For a sit-down meal, stop by  Bigtide Brewing Company  for craft beer and pub fare. 

Where to stay:  In downtown Saint John, the  Delta Hotel by Marriott Saint John  is conveniently within walking distance to the city’s best attractions and its famed  reversing falls , which appear to swirl backwards into the Bay of Fundy. British Columbia's Highway 99

Sea to Sky Highway: Washington State to Whistler, British Columbia

You can drive from the edge of Washington state to the mountains in Whistler in just over two hours, cutting through vibrant Vancouver along the way. The Sea-to-Sky Highway, also known as the BC-99, connects North Vancouver to Whistler on a picturesque coastal drive where the mountain and the water meet. Where to stop: To break up your drive, stop in Squamish at the Sea to Sky Gondola to get an aerial view of the region. If time permits, enhance your visit with a free guided tour to learn about the history of the land on the Spirit Trail .  Where to eat: Head to the Nicklaus North Golf Course to try and snag a spot on the patio at Table Nineteen for scenic views of Green Lake, and the descending floatplanes flying in from Vancouver.  Where to stay: Book a few nights in Whistler to explore this bustling mountain town. Budget-travelers flock to the boutique capsule Pangea Pod Hotel , located in the center of the main strip. For a lakeside respite, the Nita Lake Lodge is a stone’s throw away in Creekside Village.

Quebec City's Old Town

Autoroute 73: Maine to Quebec City, Quebec

While several of the New England states border Québec, the capital city of Québec City is in the Eastern part of the province, closest to Maine. This Francophone city feels more like Europe than other areas of Canada, with narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. Continue your road trip along the St. Lawrence River to scenic Baie-Saint Paul in Charlevoix for country walks, cheese shops, and the Galerie d'art Iris .  Where to stop: Mark the Montmorency Falls on your map for a quick stop just outside of Québec City, on your way to Charlevoix. The magnificent falls tower 99 feet higher than Niagara Falls and adventurous travelers can explore them by cable car, a suspended bridge , or zip-line. Where to eat: Stop by the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac for an afternoon tea at the castle, or dine onsite at Champlain Restaurant or Sam Bistro.  Where to stay: Auberge Saint-Antoine in the Old Port of Quebec City is a Relais & Châteaux that has preserved relics from the archeological dig within the property. In Baie-Saint Paul, the Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix blends a peaceful escape in a charming town with sophisticated amenities and an onsite Spa Nordique Le Germain.

The Southwest Nova Scotia Route: Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

When the  CAT ferry  that travels between Bar Harbor, Maine , and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, resumes in spring 2022, you can get from coast to coast on this high-speed catamaran in just over three hours. RVs, pickups, SUVs, cars, tour buses, motorcycles, and bicycles are welcome aboard—making this the best way for road trippers to cross the Atlantic Ocean into Canada. Once in Nova Scotia, drive along the jaw-dropping coastline along the 101 to Halifax, and back down the 103 to the ferry in Yarmouth.

Where to stop:  Plan to make several stops during your road trip, in the small coastal towns of Digby, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay. After Halifax, head to Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse to visit one of the most recognizable sites in Canada.

Where to eat:  A trip to Nova Scotia isn’t complete with indulging in fresh seafood. Swing by one of the stalls at  Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market , or grab a lobster roll along the water’s edge in one of the small towns that you visit along the way. 

Where to stay:  Break up your drive by staying a night or two in downtown Halifax. For a touch of history, book your stay at the  Lord Nelson Hotel and Suites  by the Halifax Public Gardens. For a contemporary option, check out  Muir, Autograph Collection Hotel –slated to open in fall 2021 .

Emerald Lake, South Klondike Highway

Alaska-Canadian Highway: Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon

The 1390-mile route along the Alaska-Canadian Highway takes you through the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to British Columbia, and then into Alaska and the Yukon. For a shorter jaunt, take just the northern leg along the St. Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park and Reserve, traveling north from Alaska through Haines Junction. Where to stop: At the Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Centre , you can pick up hiking maps, register for backcountry camping, and learn more about Kluane National Park and Reserve. During the spring and fall, Dall Sheep can often be seen nearby. This national park is home to Canada’s highest mountain, Mt. Logan, the largest non-polar ice fields on the planet, and is part of one the largest internationally protected areas connected to Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park in Alaska.

Where to eat: There are several dining options in Haines Junction, but due to the secluded nature of this region you’ll want to pack a few snacks in a bear-proof container to bring on your drive. Rely on on-site dining options during your hotel stay, and healthy breakfasts and hearty family-style dinners at the Mount Logan EcoLodge .  Where to stay: The  Mount Logan EcoLodge  is a rustic escape tucked within the mountains, in a prime location for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis during the winter months. 

Yellowhead Highway #16

Yellowhead Highway: North Dakota to Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Yellowhead Highway runs through the Canadian Prairie from Winnipeg, Manitoba, through Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Edmonton, Alberta. From the North Dakota border, drive up to Winnipeg for an overnight stay before continuing west toward  Riding Mountain National Park . 

Where to stop:  Spend a day or two in Winnipeg to explore the city. During your visit, see the Inuit art museum  Qaumajuq , in the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights , and  Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Journey to Churchill exhibit . 

Where to eat:  Under the direction of Chef Mandel Hitzer,  deer + almond 's menu offers a fusion of flavors. Hitzer is also the brains behind the winter pop-up restaurant  RAW:almond , constructed atop Winnipeg’s frozen river. 

Where to stay:  The  Inn at the Forks  is centrally located in the city’s tourist area within walking distance to several restaurants and the  Canadian Museum for Human Rights . 

Red Coat Trail Saskatchewan Badlands: Montana to Saskatchewan

The historic Red Coat Trail along Highway 13 stretches through the Prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Explore the midway section of the route in Saskatchewan, a short drive away from the Montana-Saskatchewan border. For the closest crossing to Grasslands National Park , head north along the 191 in Montana crossing the border in Morgan. Where to stop: Visit the wide-open plains of Grasslands National Park on your way from the U.S.-Canada border toward Highway 13. This national park is one of the largest Dark Sky Preserves in Canada, making it the perfect place to stargaze during your overnight stay.  Where to eat: Stop by  Harvest Eatery  in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, located along the Red Coat Trail. Their extensive globally inspired menu serves farm-fresh salads, family-style mains, and a kid’s menu to accommodate young travelers.  Where to stay: Stay within Grasslands National Park in a Parks Canada oTENTik . Toronto is an amazing place to live, but sometimes it's nice to escape from the familiar, and experience new places. If you want to see more of Ontario, it's easy to plan weekend escapes.

Toronto is also a gateway city, with direct flights from destinations around the globe. Visitors can use the city as a jumping-off point for excursions to nearby towns and natural areas.

You can find some of Ontario's most charming small towns within a couple of hours of the city, and within a five-hour radius of Toronto are world-class cities, peaceful rural areas, cultural hot spots, and amazing outdoor areas.

While most people only think about getaways to other areas of Ontario, Toronto is also within striking distance of Quebec and Upstate New York .

Niagara Falls is perhaps the easiest weekend getaway from Toronto and the most popular. Only 1.5 hours down the QEW Highway, this natural wonder is Ontario's most visited attraction and something everyone should see.

Niagara Falls themselves provide hours of discovery, whether it's just a glimpse over the side and a stroll along the gorge, or a tour down beneath the falls, where you can truly appreciate the splendor and power of the falls as the ground shakes beneath you.

Other activities to incorporate into your weekend getaway include a Hornblower Niagara cruise to the base of the falls, a jet boat ride through the rapids, or a visit to the sights and sounds of Clifton Hill.

At night, the falls are lit up in different colors. A stroll along the gorge with the cascading water reflecting the pink or blue lights makes for a romantic evening.

Accommodation in Niagara Falls is plentiful and easy to find. Falls view rooms are the best option and definitely worth the higher price. Dining options are extensive and varied, making it easy to find something to suit your taste and budget.

Historic Metcalfe Street is packed with shops selling clothing, gifts, and one-of-a-kind items from local artisans. Many of the retail establishments are housed in beautifully restored buildings from the 19 th century complete with creaky, old floors.

Cozy restaurants serve innovative local fare with the freshest ingredients from farms nearby. You can either dine on Metcalfe Street and do a bit of people watching, or if you prefer a more sedate pace, grab a seat on a patio overlooking the river.

Looking for that ideal piece of art to hang on the wall? Elora has some wonderful galleries showcasing well-known local artists, along with up-and-coming artists.

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to be sure to visit the Elora Gorge located a short distance from town. Here, the Grand River flows through a narrow chasm with sheer walls reaching up nearly 80 feet.

Long a favorite four-season weekend getaway destination, Blue Mountain and the nearby town of Collingwood are the ideal places for just about anyone. Families come here to enjoy the extensive list of activities, and couples come here for romantic escapes .

A weekend getaway to Muskoka, with its towering pine trees, clear lakes, beautiful beaches , and rocky shorelines, is almost a rite of passage for Torontonians.

Prince Edward County is a popular weekend getaway for good reason. Just a two-hour drive from Toronto , this bucolic countryside is dotted with small towns and rolling hills.

Check into a cozy bed and breakfast and let your stress melt away. Go shopping at the galleries in Picton then grab some freshly made cheese at Black River Cheese in Milford.

Dining in Prince Edward County ranges from small, exclusive restaurants, run by chefs relocated from Toronto, right through to the local favorites serving homemade fare.

In the summer, nearby Sandbanks Provincial Park is a fun place to visit. Run down the sand dunes flowing right into the clear waters of Lake Ontario or simply lounge on the beach.

If you stay downtown, Buffalo is a very walkable city. If the distances are a bit far for your liking, hop on the free tram that runs down Main Street.

Canada's capital city is chock-full of attractions that every Canadian should see: the Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal , Canadian War Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada just to name a few.

Ottawa is a well-laid-out city and very walkable. Stay downtown if you can and park your car for the weekend. You'll be able to wander past all these iconic sights, eventually making your way over to Byward Market area. Here, you'll find the city's best restaurants, shops, and pedestrian-only areas with street performers.

Ottawa is an easy drive from Toronto, it usually takes just over four hours. Alternatively, you can take the train, the travel time is about the same, and it is much more relaxing.

If you are a sports fan and have always wanted to experience a US college football or basketball game, with its passionate locals cheering the team on, check the schedule for the Syracuse University Orange teams. Tickets are cheap, and you'll almost be guaranteed to have a good time.

Fun times are in store on a summer weekend getaway to Wasaga Beach. This beach town has a lively vibe, and every weekend in the summer something is going on. If the weather is nice count on big crowds and incredible people watching.

Wasaga Beach is the longest freshwater beach in the world , and its sandy shoreline and shallow, warm waters are ideal for families. This is one of the best beaches in Ontario .

Rochester has an array of fine-dining options along with funky and fun places, too. For dinner check out The Club Room in a beautifully restored warehouse space; grab breakfast at the Highland Park Diner on your way out of the city back to Toronto.

Rochester is less than three hours from Toronto on divided highways the entire way.

For a bit of Quebec on your weekend getaway, visit Montreal . This world-class city has everything you need to enjoy yourself - a trendy restaurant scene, historical districts, designer boutiques, galleries, and, of course, world-famous bagels.

Stay in Old Montreal , down by the river, where you'll find boutique hotels housed in renovated warehouses dating from the 19 th century. Old Montreal is a wonderful area with narrow, twisty streets that are a joy to wander both day and night. Duck in for a coffee or espresso if it's cold, or if you are visiting in the summer, grab a seat on an outdoor patio.

From downtown Toronto, you can take the train to Montreal . The trip takes about five hours and is stress-free. You'll arrive right in the heart of the action in downtown Montreal. Driving is also an option and only takes about 30 minutes longer.

Just over an hour farther along the same highway to Rochester is Syracuse. This college town is a lively place, with a youthful vibe, that always has something going on. Catch a game of football or basketball and cheer on the Orange, enjoy some shopping at Destiny USA shopping mall, or explore the city's museums and other attractions .

Syracuse has a revitalized downtown that is easily walkable, with historic buildings dating from the 19 th century. In this same area are funky and fun restaurants, try Pastabilities for dinner, Modern Malt for breakfast, and grab a donut at Glazed and Confused for the road trip home.

Historic Cities of Eastern Canada

This was the first time I’d been on a holiday to North America and also the first time I’d been on an escorted holiday. The group size was around 30 people (mainly couples), in total there were four single travellers on the holiday, most people on the holiday would have been over 50 years old. This holiday isn’t suitable for someone who can’t stand heights or who doesn’t like boat trips as two boat trips are included and lunch up the CN Tower is included, while some of the hotels in Canada are very tall and don’t have that many rooms per floor – I was on the 30th floor of the hotel in Toronto. The first day we got an oldish, not very luxurious coach but the tour director did say the coach and driver would just be for that day and for the rest of the trip we would have a different coach, which was a newish Globus branded coach which had better seating and more leg room than the coach we had on the first day. Apparently the different coach and driver on the first day was down to working hours for the main driver so I imagine it happens every time. In Ottawa the tour director promised us something that wasn’t advertised. It turned out this was the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Museum. I found this disappointing as it wasn’t very interesting and an included tour of the Parliament building or the Royal Mint would have been of far more interest to me. Local guides provided tours in Quebec City and Montreal. I think the one of Quebec City worked well but the one of Montreal was 2 hours, mainly on the coach (after already having spent most of the morning on the coach) alighting only to go inside a Cathedral and at a photo opportunity from a vantage point so I would have preferred a bit more walking around Montreal. For included meals be aware that you won’t have the full restaurant menu to order from but a special menu which doesn’t have as many options, in some cases there was only one available option for starter or dessert. If you book this tour and it’s possible I’d recommend arriving on Thursday and departing on Sunday as both Toronto and Montreal are huge cities and the tour only gives you limited time in both cities. For me it wasn’t possible to stay an extra night in Montreal and I don’t feel there wasn’t enough time to see the city.

I LOVED this tour. This was my first time as a solo traveller. The tour guide and the driver were both excellent. The experiences were incredible. Trying to arrange the amount of cities, and experiences solo, with hotels, travel etc is not possible for anywhere near the amount paid. Value for money is excellent. Hotels overall were good. There were some that were a little out of the cities, however the tour guide and driver did their best to accommodate by driving everyone back into the city if they wanted to go. Most of the experiences were really good. The Montmorency Falls as an extra trip with meal was a little pricey. There was not enough time at the Falls and the best view would be down the bottom. This could have been a free trip, without the meal, I would suggest this is looked at. Also in Montreal the tour guide who took us round, was not very engaging and it was difficult to hear her. Everything else was spot on. Well organised, excellent value for money, lovely people, beautiful country, wide range of experiences. LOVED IT. Will definitely be doing another tour.

Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Is Toronto worth visiting? That answer is a huge YES! As one of the biggest cities in North America (bigger than every US city besides New York and LA), Toronto has plenty to offer visitors checking out Ontario.

Having grown up north of Toronto as well as living and working in Toronto for a while, we like to think we know a thing or two about Canada’s largest city!

Toronto tourism is always booming – especially in the warm summer months but even in the dead of winter!

General Information About Toronto

As the capital of Ontario and Canada’s largest city, Toronto has a lot to live up to! This diverse city of over 2.5 million people is bustling with life everywhere you look.

The city sits right on the shores of Lake Ontario – which is great for boating but creates interesting climate/weather all year round!

Now, keep in mind that in this post we are talking about just the city of Toronto. Toronto is part of a larger area called the GTA – or the Greater Toronto Area – which includes the city core and the surrounding regions of Peel, Durham, Halton, and York.

For your visit, you don’t really need to know about these areas if you are sticking to the city centre of Toronto.

That said, the next biggest cities in the surrounding area are Mississauga, Brampton, and Markham. Some people even include Hamilton in this mix – and then it gets even more complicated!

A Brief History Lesson On Toronto

Toronto actually has a long history behind it. First a settlement by Indigenous Peoples, it was part of a trading route that led to other lakes in the north of the province.

The French settled there, then the British, and it was made the capital of Upper Canada to be called “York”. There was a Fort built – Fort York – but then it was attacked and sacked by Americans in 1812 (but then we burnt down the White House).

The city grew as immigrants settled in from abroad and eventually the city became “Toronto” in 1834 (before Canada was even a country).

Since then, it has grown out over time – essentially eating up smaller neighbourhoods as it went to become Canada’s economic and cultural powerhouse that it is today.

You can revisit some of the most historic elements of Toronto when you check out St. Lawrence Market , Old City Hall, and Queen’s Park .

Safety While Visiting Toronto

As far as large cities go, there is no guarantee for complete safety. Having said that, Toronto is considered a very safe city to live in and visit. The downtown core especially is a safe area.

However, as a visitor to Toronto (as with any place you are unfamiliar with) you should watch your pockets – especially on the TTC (public transit, see below) and at tourist attractions.

Besides that, watch out for bikes and streetcars when you cross the roads – and follow the pedestrian signals or else you might get a fine for jaywalking!

While it’s completely safe to be out at night – do be mindful of your surroundings depending on the areas you are going out in.

If you stick to the Entertainment District, Queen Street, or Ossington, it’s a safe bet there will be plenty of other people around.

Weather and Climate in Toronto

Largely because of the lake, Toronto has four distinct seasons that you can experience. That said, the seasonal temperature fluctuation can basically go from -30 degrees Celsius in the cold of January winter to +35 degrees Celsius in the summer in August.

Another thing to remember is that Toronto summer is nicer in May and June as opposed to July and August. Toronto is notorious for humid heat in the summer so you may sweat even if you are in the shade!

As we said, the best time to visit Toronto would be the early summer or even in the fall. September and October can be cooler but September still has the chance of some residual summer heat.

You also get the beautiful autumn colours on the trees which some people pay big money to see!

Flying Into Toronto Airports

If you are visiting Toronto from far away, there’s a good chance that you will be flying in.

Toronto has two main airports that most passengers use: Toronto Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. We’ll dive into which is which below:

Pearson International Airport

With the airport code YYZ, Pearson is the largest/busiest airport in all of Canada. While the airport handles domestic flights, it is the main hub for international destinations.

If you need to learn more about Pearson, you can check out Pearson’s website here .

Now, keep in mind that Pearson is NOT close to downtown Toronto. The airport is located in Mississauga which is outside the city centre. However, you have a few options to get to downtown/the city centre.

You can take a cab or airport shuttle to your hotel but this option can be expensive. Luckily, if you are heading downtown (to then go to a hotel or take public transit to another place in the city) you have one great option: The UP Express Train.

The UP Express – a Union-Pearson Train – is super easy to take between Terminal 1 and Union Station. You can buy tickets ahead of time online, on your phone, or in person at the machines or kiosks.

You can also get a Presto Card (used for Toronto transit), load it up, and use it for the UP. We will cover the Presto Card below…

The UP only opened a few years ago and we’ve already taken it countless times. Eric grew up in a time when the UP didn’t exist so the fact that there’s a direct train link between downtown Toronto and the airport is awesome (and makes loads of sense).

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

With the airport code YTZ, Toronto also has Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This small island airport flies Porter Airlines and Air Canada to short/medium distance flights to the US (New York, Chicago) and other places in Ontario/Canada.

If you do somehow fly into Billy Bishop, you can take the ferry from the island or walk (in a tunnel) from the airport to the mainland which is downtown Toronto.

You can learn more about Billy Bishop here . Eric has flown through Billy Bishop a handful of times and it’s been really nice each time. It’s a small, well-functioning airport!

Getting To/Around Toronto

To get to Toronto, you have a few options: you can drive, take the bus, or take the train – either the ViaRail or the GO (regional Ontario train).

If you have rented a car and are driving, downtown Toronto is encased by a highway “box” of four major routes:

• the 401 runs east-west at the north end of the city,
• the Highway 404/Don Valley Parkway runs north-south to the east,
• the Gardiner Expressway runs along the waterfront at the south,
• and Highway 427 runs north-south on the west side of the city.

The main transport hub is Union Station which is right downtown on Front Street.

This massive hub (which is basically always somehow under renovation) is the busiest station in Canada and handles passengers heading every which way on buses, regional, and long-distance trains. You can check out more information about Union here .

Public Transportation (the TTC)

Once you are in Toronto, you will have the experience of riding the TTC. The “Toronto Transit Commission” is responsible for public transportation in Toronto.

Lovingly known as the TTC, it will get you from A to B eventually. We say this because the system is prone to delays for a variety of reasons. That said, it’s reliable most of the time.

The TTC is made up of the subway, buses, and streetcars. The subway is good for going north-south across downtown, while the streetcars and buses fill in the gaps on major streets.

Toronto is basically a giant grid system so it’s pretty easy to get around if you have your bearings about you.

When you get on transit (or go through a paid gate to enter the subway), you can now just tap your contactless card (way to get with the times, Toronto).

The other more permanent solution is the Presto Card – the official tap card of the system and a few other transit systems in Ontario.

If you plan on using it more than a few times, you might opt to buy a Presto at a vending machine (for a small fee) and load it with money (minimum $10.00).

To use the Presto, just tap to get “on” the subway, streetcar, or bus and tap again if you transfer between modes of transportation.

Presto card users get to use the “two-hour transfer” rule meaning that from the first tap you have two hours to basically get on and off and go in any direction you want – all for the price of one fare.

Just tap each time you change vehicles or directions. Fares are not based on distance so you don’t have to tap “off” or out of the system again.

You can also still use cash to pay for tickets but only when there is a manned payment box on the bus or in the subway station.

If you do pay with cash or a method that is not Presto, remember to take your paper “transfer”. It’s your Proof of Payment for the ride.

Driving in Toronto

Driving in Toronto isn’t terrible since it’s a big grid – but it can get pretty congested in the morning and afternoon (after work). Parking downtown can also be expensive.

You also have the option to take an Uber, Lyft, or taxi. Toronto is a big city with lots of drivers usually available.

The Neighbourhoods of Toronto

Toronto is known to be a “city of neighbourhoods” in the sense that you can walk from one and into another and feel like you’ve switched countries let alone the street.

We’ll mention below just how diverse Toronto is – but it shows in the areas around the city!

Each neighbourhood or district in Toronto has its own vibe and borders. We explain a handful of the popular ones below so you can see what’s in each one:

• The Danforth (Greektown) – an international hub of food and shops
• Liberty Village – residential area in West End with restaurants

Culture / Language in Toronto

For those who live there, it’s no secret: Toronto is a diverse city. How diverse? Toronto has been named the most diverse city in the world with over 200 nationalities represented, 140 languages, and 51% of residents being born outside of Canada.

It’s no wonder that there are so many little international pockets all over the city: Little Italy, Koreatown, etc.

The language spoken in Toronto is English, but French is also an official language of Canada. That said, you are more likely to hear literally any other language in a Toronto coffee shop before you hear French. Seriously.

That said, one time in a coffee shop in The Beaches Lisa ended up having a brief conversation with a woman in her native language – German!

The woman (who also lived in Toronto) was so surprised to hear German spoken that wasn’t her young kids.

Toronto Restaurants, Cafes, and Bars

This rich culture and diversity are certainly represented in the available food around the city. Toronto has a booming food scene – and you will get to experience it if you head to Toronto.

You can basically find any cuisine from across the world in Toronto – and that is not an exaggeration.

That said, Toronto is known for its brunch culture. There are brunch places everywhere – and the weekend mornings are sacred brunch time.

If you are heading for brunch be sure to be early or expect to wait a bit! There are loads of great brunch places and we will write a whole post on them soon!

Toronto also has a strong coffee culture. Canadians (in general) drink a lot of coffee compared to other countries so cafes are a very common occurrence around the city.

You can try Tim Hortons – the classic Canadian brand – but explore the city for tiny coffee shops… they pop out of everywhere!

Finally, Toronto has a strong bar/pub/club culture – being a massive city. The Entertainment District is a good place to start if you are looking for a place to go out for drinks or dancing.

There are other pockets to go out in (like Ossington) but generally, you’ll find bars all over the city. We really like Bar Hop (shown above) for food pints and food!

Paying and Tipping In Toronto

While you are out in Toronto, it’s a good idea to know how paying and tipping work in Canada/the city.

You can use cash in the city but basically everywhere accepts cards. In fact, it’s arguably the preferred method these days.

In Canada, tipping is expected for service. At a restaurant, the amount is generally 15% of the bill but it’s not unheard of to tip higher for really good service.

Sometimes large groups have tip automatically added to the bill so watch for that. Even poor service gets a tip – but a lower amount. No tip would be very rude.

You can also tip at the bar by tossing a dollar or two to the bartender for drinks – price depending, of course. Tipping well at the bar might mean you get drinks faster all night long… just sayin’.

Sports and Entertainment in Toronto

If you are looking for things to do in Toronto, you will not have a shortage of options. From sports to festivals and bars and theatre, you will find something to suit all interests!

Toronto is a huge sports city – with hockey ( Maple Leafs ) and basketball ( Raptors ) at Scotiabank Arena , baseball ( Blue Jays ) at the Rogers Centre, and soccer ( Toronto FC ) being the most popular sports.

They also have a Canadian football team, Lacrosse team, and smaller sports leagues/levels.

In short, it can be expensive to watch live sports (especially Leafs). Jays tickets are still affordable if you sit up high.

If you just go to the bar to eat, drink, and watch the game among locals you will have a fun time all the same.

As for other things to do – we have a whole post on this. That said, there are many museums in Toronto like the Royal Ontario Museum , the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Art Gallery of Ontario , and more.

There are many theatres and musical venues as well like the Princess of Wales Theatre , Massey Hall, The Danforth Music Hall, and the Opera House – to name just a handful!

Toronto is as cosmopolitan as they come. To newcomers, Toronto may seem like just another big city. Downtown is dotted with skyscrapers and the city's streets bustle with people on the go . Toronto is considered one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, with more than half the population born outside of the city. Toronto houses 200 ethnic groups that speak over 140 languages, making this Ontario destination a world all its own. With Greektown, Little Italy, Koreatown and Chinatown all within city limits, travelers may feel as if they've seen more than a couple of countries after a visit to Toronto.

The city is also home to one of the tallest freestanding towers in the world, the  CN Tower , and the world's largest underground shopping mall, PATH. Best months to visit.

The best times to visit Toronto are late April through May and September through October. Peak tourist season occurs during the summer months: the sidewalks come alive with pedestrian marketplaces, patio restaurants and numerous cultural events. However, as temperatures rise, so do prices. If you're looking to save money on hotels, pack a parka and book your trip during the wintertime. If you want lower prices and temperatures above freezing, spring and fall are your best bet.

What You Need to Know

Winters are long Toronto's winters are both bitter and interminable. Residents don't consider winter officially over until late April; plan accordingly.

Bring a map Aside from the city's cultural diversity, Toronto is geographically diverse. There's downtown, yes, but there are also various beautiful beaches along Lake Ontario, including Toronto's famous  islands , Cherry Beach and Bluffer’s Beach.

Hockey is a religion. This sport is as big as they say in Canada. Top athletes are household names, and when the season arrives, it's huge. You must go to a game if you're around during hockey season.

How to Save Money in Toronto

Forget the car  Unless you're planning a daytrip to  Niagara Falls , having a car will be both expensive and a pain. Instead of worrying about the gas price or finding a parking space, use public transit, a ride-hailing service like Uber, or walk to your destinations.

Summer, in some other place  Warm, sunny weather attracts hordes of tourists and drives hotel prices through the roof. You'll find much lower rates during the winter and shoulder seasons. Or you can stay in other cities near Toronto, such as North York, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Vaughan and Scarborough.

Consider the CityPASS  Admission to some of Toronto's biggest attractions, such as the  CN Tower , the  Toronto Zoo  and the  Royal Ontario Museum , are included. So, if you plan to visit all three, you'll save time and money by opting for the pass.

Culture & Customs

Though English and French are Canada's two official languages, you'll also likely hear Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi and Tagalog, a language of the Philippines, among others. This is all thanks to Toronto's diverse residents and ever-increasing immigrant population.

Perhaps the most significant difference American travellers will encounter is the use of the Canadian dollar and the international metric system. One U.S. dollar equals about CA$1.35, but since the exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check it before your trip. You can avoid confusion by familiarizing yourself with Canadian currency. Coins are in denominations of $2, $1, $0.50, $0.25, $0.10 and $0.05. Canadian dollar coins are called "loonies;" two-dollar coins are called "toonies." Paper bills are in denominations of $100, $50, $20, $10 and $5. You can dodge high exchange fees by withdrawing Canadian money directly from ATMs in Toronto. Along with differences in currency, you'll also encounter some disparities in how temperatures, distance and weights are measured (in metric units); distance is measured in kilometers – pay close attention to this if you've decided to rent a car.

What to Eat

It should go without saying that one of the world's most multicultural cities holds the same distinction for its dining scene. Not only does Toronto have a Little Italy, but there's also Chinatown, a Koreatown, a Greektown, a Little Iran, Russia, and Turkey in North York and Little Portugal about 2 miles west of downtown. Moreover, the Bazaar neighborhood offers top-notch Indian and Middle Eastern fare. Roncesvalles Village (formerly called Little Poland) is known for its Eastern European eateries and independent coffee shops, not to mention its popular annual Little Poland festival in September. There are so many foodie enclaves worth exploring here that you may have to plan another trip or two to sample the city's robust palate. Luckily, no matter which area of town you choose to visit, locals assure you that good food isn't hard to come by in this city.

Hence, for a diverse culinary experience, head to the St. Lawrence Market in Old Town and the Kensington Market . At St. Lawrence Market , indulge in Canadian classics and international dishes like the famous peameal bacon sandwich from Carousel Bakery or Portuguese-style chicken at Churrascos. In Kensington Market, you'll find a mix of Jamaican-Italian fusion at Rasta Pasta, California-style tacos at Seven Lives, vegan options at Urban Herbivore, delightful pies at Wanda's Pie in the Sky, and Berlin-style doner kebabs at Otto's Berlin Döner. Plus, various Asian cuisine is available within a short distance on Spadina Avenue.

Getting Around Toronto

The best way to get around Toronto is by public transportation. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) runs three modes – subway, streetcar and bus – throughout the city and suburbs. You will need a token or a pass to travel on TTC; day and week passes allow unlimited rides on all three forms of public transport. If you decide to take advantage of the city's public transportation system, be prepared for frequent delays and don't be surprised if you see a heavy police presence, especially in the subway stations, where violent incidents have occurred in recent years. If you're not comfortable using the city's public transit system, walking or biking is your next best option.

The subway and taxis connect the city to the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). However, you can expect to pay around CA$50 to CA$70 (about $38 to $54) for a cab or an Uber, while the subway will cost just CA$3.35 (around $2.60) for adults and between CA$2.30-$2.40 for youth (ages 13 to 19) and seniors. 

Entry & Exit Requirements

A valid passport is required for citizens of the United States travelling outside the mainland and for U.S. citizens trying to re-enter the country. If you plan to drive, you can also use a NEXUS card, allowing expedited border crossings for private and commercial travelers through Canadian and U.S. border controls. When we took a trip to the city earlier this year, the region was in the midst of a public art initiative called Winteractive, which featured 16 installations throughout its downtown core. The buzziest work by the Canadian artist Max Streicher featured a pair of giant inflatable clown heads squished between two buildings.

Another popular piece that popped up all over Instagram showed a woman on a swing, suspended from between two buildings just across the street from Boston Common.

But as the weather warms, sightseers can plan an entire vacation out of just strolling the city’s streets, taking in a game or visiting one of the city’s cultural institutions.

Of course, besides being steeped in history, Boston is a New England hub that caters to sports fans. So no matter the time of year, you’ll undoubtedly run into a Celtics, Bruins, Patriots or Red Sox fan cheering on the hometown teams.

The Bruins, who are in the midst of an opening round playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, are celebrating their 100th anniversary until the end of the year.

Throughout the rest of 2024, the club will honour its history as America’s oldest professional hockey team. A statue of Bruins legend Bobby Orr greets fans on their way into the arena.

“The Boston Bruins are an important part of the fabric of the City of Boston and we are excited and proud to be the first U.S. team in the National Hockey League to reach the centennial milestone,” says Charlie Jacobs, Bruins CEO and alternate governor.

Heritage Hall inside TD Garden allows fans to immerse themselves in the Bruins’ tradition by reliving the squad’s most iconic moments on the ice.

In December, the club will commemorate its first-ever game against the Montreal Maroons.

“Honouring over 1,000 Bruins alumni will be a big part of our centennial celebration,” says team president Cam Neely.

If you make it to a game, a stop at Tresca , located in the North End’s Hanover Street, should be on the checklist for hockey fans. The restaurant is co-owned by Ray Bourque, the Bruins’ longest-serving captain who played 21 seasons with the team. When we settled in for a meal, we tried their Swayman Special — goalie Jeremy Swayman’s night-before-the-game favourite, which consisted of chicken parmesan and angel hair pasta in a creamy tomato cream sauce.

And whether you’re a baseball fan or not, if you are visiting during the summer, a stop at Fenway Park should be on your itinerary. But make sure to bring your singing voice. If you’re there when the Red Sox are in town, you’ll have to belt out Sweet Caroline at least once.

If baseball isn’t your thing, the storied venue also plays host to concerts, with the Foo Fighters and Noah Kahan among artists booking shows at the outdoor stadium in 2024. A tour is a nice add on as Fenway Park guides unveil secrets from the ballpark’s 112-year history.

CULTURE VULTURES

The kids might turn their nose up if they see library on the agenda, but wandering the stacks of the Boston Public Library is a wonderful way to spend part of an afternoon. Built in 1848, art and architecture aficionados will marvel at its design and attention to detail, not to mention the floor-to-ceiling murals. And if you stop by during the summer, you can catch an outdoor concert featuring local musicians performing in the picturesque McKim Building Courtyard.

After opening popular locations in San Diego and Chicago, the WNDR Museum’s Boston outpost is another welcome spot for art lovers with its interactive and immersive displays, including an installation by famed artist Yayoi Kusama.

PUT ON YOUR WALKING SHOES

I’ve been visiting Beantown since taking a school trip there in 1991 and it is easily one of the most walkable cities in North America. Lovely green spaces dot its downtown core, but set between the waterfront and the highrises of the financial district the Rose Kennedy Greenway provides a welcome respite from all the action.

Built on top of an underground highway, the walking path runs 2.4 kilometres and connects Boston’s oldest and most vibrant neighbourhoods, including downtown Boston, the Leather District, the Wharf District, the North End and the West End.

During the summer, food trucks will pop up along the Greenway as well as outdoor beer gardens and weekly farmers’ markets.

“The park helped create a more connected Boston,” Greenway executive director Chris Cook says. “The Greenway now connects people, neighbourhoods, and communities through free and innovative programming, diverse and contemporary public art, and world-class organic horticulture.”

No matter the time of year, a stroll through Boston Common is also a must. First built in 1634, it is the oldest public park in America. On its vast grounds, guests can enjoy the many sights as they meander through its manicured gardens and monuments. Cheers fans can grab a drink right across the street at the original location of the bar that inspired the long-running TV sitcom.

A visit to the Seaport District, the original site of the Tea Party in South Boston, shows an area transformed by waterfront walking paths, shopping and museums, including the jaw-dropping Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed Institute of Contemporary Art.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace and nearby Quincy Market are also great spots to grab a bite, people watch and shop.

WEAR STRETCHY PANTS

Foodies have long known that Boston’s exploding restaurant scene has yielded some of the best seafood and Italian eateries in America. So there are plenty of places worth seeking out.

Mario Carbone’s Contessa Ristorante played host to some of Marvel’s Avengers when Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth did brunch at the rooftop pad located in the Newbury Boston hotel.

When we dined there, we tucked into the Panettone French Toast, Squash Carpaccio, Macaroni with Wild Boar Ragu with a scoop of stracciatella gelato to finish things off.

For lowkey but upscale pre-dinner drinks, head over to The Wig Shop , a hidden cocktail lounge that disguises itself as — you guessed it — a wig shop. If you’re up for more imbibing, o enophiles will want to seek out haley.henry . Located in in the heart of Downtown Crossing, the wine bar, which is the brainchild of Haley Fortier, serves only small-batch vintages you won’t find anywhere else. They also specialize in serving up tinned fish — a ll in a cozy 680-square-foot space.

When you wander over to Seaport, Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli’s seafood spot Hook + Line has dishes that will cater to fish lovers. We recommend the clam chowder — it’s a New England staple, but particularly scrumptious here — and the baked sea scallops.

BEST VIEW IN TOWN

One of the newest local attractions invites visitors to take in the city sights from the top of the Prudential Tower. The View Boston observatory deck is located at the top of the city’s second-tallest skyscraper and shows off 360-degree views of key landmarks, including the gold-domed Massachusetts State House, Fenway Park, the Charles River, Harvard University, Boston Common and many more.

WHERE TO STAY

There are many charming neighbourhoods you can use for your homebase. During our many visits we’ve enjoyed stays at the W Hotel and The Liberty (which was once the site of the Charles Street Jail). Most recently we stayed at The Dagny in the city’s financial district. The property is close to the waterfront and walking distance to the nearby North End, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Boston Common. Built in 1928, The Dagny is located in what once was Boston’s tallest “skyscraper” (at 14 storeys). It was given a refresh last year and boasts a restaurant ( Fin Point Oyster Bar ) and on-property cafe ( Tradesmen Coffee ).

So many things, in fact, that planning a trip to this cosmopolitan city can feel pretty overwhelming if you are only coming for a short period of time . Let us help.

If you’re ready to explore, here’s what you shouldn’t miss when you visit Canada ’s largest city. 

1. Take in the views from the CN Tower

Once the tallest structure in the world, the CN Tower is a symbol of the city and one of the most visited places in Toronto. Ride the elevator to the main observation deck to take in views of Toronto’s skyline from 346m (1136ft). If you have a strong stomach you can ascend even higher to the 447m (1465ft) SkyPod – high enough that you can actually feel the tower swaying in the wind.

Detour: Seeing the views from the inside is great, but adventure seekers should consider the EdgeWalk, the world’s highest full-circle, hands-free walk. Secured by a harness, you’ll creep around the edge of the tower, 116 stories above the streets below. There is a wheelchair-accessible option for the EdgeWalk as well. 

2. Eat your way around Chinatown

Toronto’s Chinatown is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and liveliest areas. Busy local markets and colorful neon signs make for plenty of visual stimulation – though you’ll want to explore the pan-Asian food vendors with your taste buds as well. Taste your way through servings of dumplings and dim sum, hot pot and pho, banh mi and buns – be sure to arrive hungry.

3. Catch a game

Toronto is home to multiple professional sports teams, with games taking place year-round. If you know your travel dates well in advance, see if you can score tickets to see the Raptors (basketball), Blue Jays (baseball) or Maple Leafs (hockey) play on home turf – then cheer along with the locals. 

4. Browse through St Lawrence Market

Historic St Lawrence Market looms large in Toronto. Sure, it’s a top tourist attraction – but it’s also where many locals still go to do their shopping. Here, you’ll find specialty food shops and local businesses, with the Saturday farmers' markets and Sunday antique market weekly highlights.

Detour: The second floor of the South Market houses the Market Gallery, a space for rotating exhibitions. Stop by to check out the creative happenings in this favorite landmark. 

5. Grab a drink in the Distillery District

Take a pass on the bars in Toronto’s downtown and head to the Distillery District . Known for arts, entertainment, dining and more, the neighborhood is centered around an old whiskey distillery, today filled by crowds continuing the tradition by seeking out tipples of all varieties. Try SpiritHouse for top-shelf cocktails, Mill Street Brewery for a pint of Canadian craft beer or El Catrin Destileria for a margarita during patio (warm-weather) season.

Planning tip: If you’re in town for the holidays, Toronto’s charming Winter Village Christmas Market takes over the Distillery District every year. 

6. Explore Kensington Market

In a city full of suits and skyscrapers, Kensington Market brings something quirkier. This proudly bohemian, appealing scruffy neighborhood boasts vintage shops, unique boutiques and varied art spaces. Don’t miss the famous “garden car,” with its herbs, flowers, tomato plants and even a lawn growing out of a painted (and permanently parked) sedan.

Planning tip: While most come here to shop, it’s also worth coming to eat at one (or more) of Kensington Market’s many international restaurants. The district is also adjacent to Chinatown, making for a great combination food tour.

7. Salute Canada’s hockey legends

Since hockey holds a place in every Canadian’s heart, the official Hockey Hall of Fame in the Financial District is a top destination for visitors. This family-friendly attraction holds the largest collection of hockey memorabilia in the world – including the Stanley Cup itself. Here, you can learn about the sport’s history, try your hand shooting against the world’s best goalies in an interactive exhibit and watch vintage footage from the video vault. 

8. Admire the cherry blossoms at High Park

Come spring, Toronto bursts into bloom with a display of cherry blossoms worthy of Japan. You’ll find the largest concentration of sakura cherry trees in town at High Park . 

Planning tip: Depending on the weather, cherry-blossom season can take place between the end of April into early May, and only lasts a week. Track the season by calling the Cherry Blossom Hotline (647-946-2547).

9. Celebrate with the city

Torontonians love nothing more than a good party. Annual extravaganzas include Toronto Pride and the world-famous Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), as well as the Toronto Jazz Festival , Toronto Caribbean Carnival , the arty Luminato Festival , Canadian Music Week and Nuit Blanche .

Planning tip: Since festivals always draw major crowds, ensure you plan and book well in advance if you time your trip to one of these events. 

10. Step onto a movie set at Casa Loma

While the scenic palace may never have housed royalty, Casa Loma has played home to a number of well-known movie stars over the years. Once the home of a financier, the building is today a tourist attraction, special event venue and movie set. Some 50 productions have filmed here; you might recognize the interior as the Xavier School from X-Men . 

11. Snap a selfie with street art 

Street art expresses Toronto’s creative spirit – and some of the best examples are in Graffiti Alley . Stretching some 400m (1000ft), this narrow street is covered with bold, bright artwork from some of the city’s top street artists.

12. Ride a roller-coaster at Canada’s Wonderland

One of the best Toronto activities for kids is a day trip to Canada’s Wonderland . About 40 minutes outside of the city, this amusement park offers 17 roller coasters, a 20-acre water park, special live shows and seasonal-themed events like the Halloween Haunt and WinterFest. Don’t miss the park’s famous funnel cake – although perhaps after you’ve taken a few stomach-churning coaster rides. 

13. Have a beach day 

Practically the size of an ocean, Lake Ontario provides for fabulous beach days – and you can see for yourself at one of the many beaches in and around Toronto . Whether you want to swim, sunbathe, have a picnic or pick up a game of volleyball, these public beaches are great places to join locals on a sunny summer day.

Detour: If you want to escape the city’s buzz, head to one of Toronto’s islands , which host four beaches, some with boat-rental concessions.

14. Get your footwear fix at the Bata Museum

One of Toronto’s most original museums features displays of towering high heels, shoes made of human hair and other outrageous footwear. With a collection of some 15,000 artifacts spanning 4500 years, the Bata Shoe Museum has the largest shoe collection in the entire world. 

15. Learn about the local Indigenous community 

Modern Toronto was built on the traditional territory of several Indigenous nations, and is home today to a sizable First Nations population. Visitors can experience Indigenous traditions – key Canadian culture – through art, food and celebrations. An amazing part of traveling is discovering a new place, but there’s something special about returning to a beloved destination—which also speaks volumes about what makes a place stand out as one of the best.

So what are the places travelers want to return to the most?

Travel insurance specialists InsureandGo recent issued a report ranking the places that travelers are most eager to revisit . To come up with this list, the researchers looked at almost 500 countries, cities and global tourist attractions, then analyzed thousands of comments on Reddit and numerous online reviews to uncover the places that hold the greatest allure for repeat visits.

“There’s no end to the experiences you can have while traveling, with so many different countries and cities around the globe just waiting to be explored,” Russell Wallace, travel insurance expert at InsureandGo, said in a release. “In some instances, however, traveling to the same place repeatedly can in fact, provide a richer experience. Bringing with it a deeper understanding of a destination, along with local insights and maybe even discovering some hidden gems.”

Topping the list of countries that travelers yearn to revisit is Japan, which is renowned for its rich culture and diverse offerings. With an impressive 324 mentions on Reddit discussions alone, Japan has clearly enchanted visitors with its captivating blend of tradition and modernity, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Kyoto.

Following closely behind Japan are Italy and Spain, two perennial favorites among globetrotters. With 294 and 209 mentions respectively, these Mediterranean gems captivate visitors with their culinary delights, stunning coastlines and architectural wonders.

When it comes to cities, London—with its iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London—reigns supreme as the ultimate destination for repeat visits. Rounding out the top five on the list: Paris, Barcelona and New York City (a tie), then Rome.

When it comes to tourist attractions, Dollywood was named the place travelers want to return to most. Set in the heart of Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains, this theme park—partly owned by the legendary Dolly Parton—delights visitors with its unique blend of entertainment, nostalgia and Southern hospitality. Disneyland in California came in at number two. A number of locations tied for the fifth spot on the list, including Yosemite National Park, England’s Blenheim Palace and Tokyo Disneyland.

Toronto will soon have a new direct flight to an ancient European city

If you're in the middle of planning your dream European summer, you'll be pleased to hear that a new nonstop flight service will be launching soon between Toronto and Rome. 

Starting Friday, May 10, Italy's national flag carrier, ITA Airways will be launching direct roundtrip flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Rome Fiumicino Airport . 

This marks the airline's first direct entry route into Canada and aligns with its plans for greater expansion throughout North America. Earlier this month, ITA Airways also launched a direct flight service from Chicago to Rome. 

Throughout May, the airline will be offering six flights weekly from Toronto to Rome, and will ramp up its service to daily flights from June to September to keep up with the busy summer travel period.

Throughout October, the national flag carrier will continue to offer five flights weekly from Toronto to Rome. 

The beautiful city of Rome is home to endless historic sites, attractions, and ancient architecture, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and Galleria Borghese. 

Both one-way and roundtrip tickets on the new routes are available for booking now.
