Court clears VIP Express Tourism in dispute with CPC, customers

The long dispute between VIP Express Tourism and Consumer Protection Council (CPC) over an alleged misconduct and wrongful dealings by VIP Express towards its customers has been resolved. A Federal High Court judge sitting in Abuja delivered its judgment on April 4, 2018 in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/55/2017, in VIP Express Tourism Limited v. Consumer Protection Council & Anor, held that the tourism firm has not been involved in any wrongdoing or unscrupulous activity in its relationship with customers as alleged, and consequently quashed the decision and recommendations made by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC).

In September 2015, CPC began an investigation into the operations of VIP Express Tourism following complaints alleging gross abuse of consumers’ rights. In December 2016, whilst there was a pending suit in court, the CPC released an order for VIP Express Tourism to refund N25 million to some aggrieved clients, who could no longer meet their contractual obligations towards the tourism firm.

But putting the matter to rest, the Federal High Court ruled that CPC had no power to determine the rights, legality, propriety or otherwise of any contract between VIP Express Tourism Ltd and its clients. The court also held that CPC does not hold the power to alter or invalidate the terms of a validly executed and subsisting contract entered into between two parties. It further ruled that the demands, decisions and recommendations made by the CPC were illegal and ultra vires.

In reacting, VIP Express Tourism Ltd said the ruling was a case of “no victor no vanquished,” as the company holds the CPC in high regard for protecting consumers’ rights, and had, therefore, diligently honoured all invitations and requests made by the commission.

While speaking to the media after the judgment, General Manager of the company, Mr. Samuel Owoseni, said the essence of contesting the decision of CPC was just to strengthen the rule of law and to put its business records right.

He said, “With all respect to the CPC’s attempt to rightfully protect the consumers of Nigeria, VIP Express Tourism Ltd is not guilty of the allegations made by the regulatory agency. VIP Express Tourism Ltd is a Nigerian company and has excellently served in the travel and tourism industry for a decade.

“Our mission has always been to bring families closer and that is why we promote quality family time so enthusiastically. We always have our clients’ best interests at heart. As we reach our 10th year of service excellence in June 2018, we recommit ourselves to the families of Nigeria. We will focus our celebration on thanking past and present members for their support and patronage by hosting a series of competitions and giving away prizes.”

Owoseni and Mr. Isaac Omagbemi, Director of VIP Express Tourism, used the opportunity to also thank all the employees who put time and energy into settling the matter. They also extended their appreciation to Edward and William Law firm for their commitment in resolving the dispute.

Owoseni added, “We hold our consumers in high esteem and reassure them of our commitment towards serving them better.”

Take advantage of the welcome offer

New applicants for the Amex Platinum card can earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. TPG values this bonus at $1,600.

If you use the CardMatch tool , you may be targeted for a welcome bonus of 80,000 or 125,000 points (offers subject to change at any time).

The key to maximizing your card's value is to reach the spending threshold to earn the bonus. By shifting all of your spending (utilities, meals, rent, etc.) onto this card until you complete the spending requirement, you'll add extra value to your card in the first year.

Understand bonus earning opportunities

While the Platinum Card is a great card for travel expenses, unfortunately, it's not your best card for everyday purchases .

You'll earn points on the Platinum card as follows:

• 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or with Amex Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per year, then 1 point per dollar).
• 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked with Amex Travel.
• 1 point per dollar on other purchases.

This makes the Amex Platinum one of the best cards for booking flights or paying taxes and fees on award tickets .

Access exclusive VIP experiences

The Platinum Card grants access to VIP experiences and early access to ticket presales, as well as By Invitation Only events. These can help you get into popular events that are likely to sell out.

The By Invitation Only program is an exclusive benefit for Platinum and Centurion cardmembers, which offers access to year-round, customized, once-in-a-lifetime events plus experiences for dining, wellness, travel, entertainment and retail.

Utilize your travel perks

This card is an excellent travel companion and provides value on the road or in the skies. The key here is to use all the services that are included.

First, take advantage of an up to $100 credit for Global Entry every 4 years or up to $85 credit for TSA PreCheck every 4.5 years and up to $189 to offset your annual Clear Plus membership fee . In addition, you can use up to $200 a year for airline fees with your preferred airline; these credits can cover expenses like inflight meals and beverages, checked-bag fees or inflight Wi-Fi. Cardmembers also can use up to $200 per year in hotel credits and up to $200 per year in Uber Cash (valid on rides and Uber eats orders in the U.S.). Enrollment is required in advance for some benefits.

You also can relax in style before your flight with access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection , including more than 1,500 airport lounges around the globe. These include Amex Centurion lounges , Delta Sky Clubs (you must be on a same-day Delta flight; limited to 10 annual visits from Feb. 1, 2025) and Priority Pass lounges (enrollment is required).

Once you reach your destination, your Platinum card offers additional luxury travel perks. You can enroll for complimentary Hilton Honors Gold Status and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status and take advantage of the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) program . This program offers room upgrades upon arrival (when available), daily breakfast for two, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout and Noon check-in (when available), complimentary Wi-Fi and a $100 or more property, dining or spa credit.

There's also access to The Hotel Collection , which offers room upgrades and hotel credits for dining, spa and resort activities when you stay for two or more nights at select hotels (minimum two night stay required).

Don't assume you receive perks automatically

To obtain the most value from the Platinum Card, you must enroll in the offers you are interested in and want. This is a simple process: log into your Amex account and pick your offers.

You need to manually enroll for elite status with car rental partners and hotel elite status programs and enroll to receive both the $200 annual Uber statement credit and Saks Fifth Avenue $100 retail credit . Don't assume you're automatically enrolled for these benefits when you receive your card.

The same applies to using Amex Offers for extra points or cash back (as a statement credit). These targeted offers can provide valuable rebates or bonuses on your purchases throughout the year, but you must add them to your card before making an eligible purchase.

Pair of giant pandas set to travel from China to San Diego Zoo

Yun Chuan and Xin Bao will be cared for at the California zoo, with a handoff date yet to be set.

A pair of giant pandas will soon make the journey from China to the US, where they will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two nations, officials said on Monday.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California. An exact date for the handoff has not been set yet.

Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who is nearly five years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Xin Bao is a nearly four-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears”.

Dr Megan Owen, the alliance’s vice president of conservation science: “Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special.”

“It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”

It’s back by popular demand — Delta and American Express unveiled the next iteration of the limited-edition Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card on the heels of the overwhelming response from Card Members when first launched in 2022 .  

The new limited-edition cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircraft 1 that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.
