Best virtual tours that you can take without leaving home

Alina Bradford

Need to get out of the house and go on vacation, but finances, health, or other circumstances have you staying at home? Virtual tours are the next best thing. They allow you to travel to exotic locations, including space, without ever leaving home. Here are some of the best ways to take a staycation getaway using virtual tours.

Best virtual tour app for Android

Best virtual tour app for iphone, best virtual tours online, best virtual space tours, best virtual tours of us national parks, best way to take a random tour, best global virtual tour, best zoo virtual tours, best aquarium virtual tours, best fine art virtual tours, best history museum virtual tours, best virtual nature walks.

The Seven Wonders app allows you to travel to the seven wonders of the world from your phone. The app supports the use of Google Cardboard but you don’t have to use it. You can just hold your phone up to your face — as you move the phone, you’ll see a 360-degree view of whatever location you’re visiting.

  • People are returning the Vision Pro. Here are the best alternatives you can buy now
  • Apple’s XR headset could get one of the Mac’s best features
  • ‘Metaversities’ let you attend digital twins of real-world college campuses in VR

With the Sites in VR app, you can take tours around the world using a virtual reality headset or just your phone or iPad. You can choose from cities or countries to visit, or you can go inside famous landmarks, like the pyramids. There are even space panoramas for a little out-of-this-world entertainment.

AirPano is a free site that allows you to wander beautiful locations all over the world. The best features of these virtual tours are choosing to take a helicopter view over the landscape or a walking trail through the area. The site also has articles about the location you are visiting and allows visitors to leave comments. If you really like a tour, you can choose to buy it as a download.

Sometimes you just want to leave this planet behind. That’s where virtual space tours come in handy. The Exoplanet Travel Bureau , powered by NASA, is here for you. You can choose an exoplanet and travel around its alien surface. Of course, the planets are artist renderings, since we haven’t actually traveled there yet, but they’re fascinating just the same. NASA at Home has many more space-themed virtual and augmented reality tours, too.

The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks is a Google project that lets you explore five different U.S. parks, including Florida’s Dry Tortugas, Hawaiian volcanoes, the Kenai Fjords in Alaska, New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns, and Utah’s Bryce Canyon. Each tour starts with a little history lesson about the area, and then you can dive into the 360-degree landscape. There are also audio tour guides that help you along your journey, explaining what you’re looking at and a little of its history.

Sometimes you don’t know where you want to go, and that’s OK. The Random Street View generator (powered by Google Maps ) is the answer. It will take you on a virtual stroll down a random street somewhere in the world. Be careful, though. Exploring random locations is a bit addicting. One minute you may be virtually walking down a highway in Michigan, and then with a click, you could be in an alleyway in Romania. The best part is that you get to see places that other virtual tour sites and apps don’t offer.

With Google Earth , you can go anywhere on our planet, from your hometown to the other side of the earth. You can use the website to take your journey, or use the app together with VR equipment to enhance your experience. Other than the awesome street views and ability to travel just about anywhere, you can also enhance Google Earth with your own videos and photos of places you have been in person.

If you’re an animal lover, there are many great virtual zoo exhibits that you can visit from your home. The San Diego Live Cams , for example, let you watch live footage of a wide range of animals, from baboons to penguins. Some other great animal cams can be found at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute , The Houston Zoo , and EarthCam .

There are plenty of ways to visit our fishy friends, too. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Georgia Aquarium, and The National Aquarium all have fantastic live webcams that allow you to watch sharks, jellyfish, stingrays, and much more.

When it comes to fine art, it’s hard to do better than a virtual tour of the Louvre . The website has a variety of tours you can take throughout the gallery, including The Galerie d’Apollon, Louvre’s Petite Galerie, and the east side of the Sully wing. When you’re finished at the Louvre, check out the virtual tours of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in South Korea , the Musée d’Orsay in Paris , and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil .

There are also virtual tours that can take you back in time, sort of. You can see amazing exhibits of curiosities from the past, like dinosaurs, Egyptian relics, Stone Age tools, and more at The Natural History Museum in London ,  The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History , and The British Museum .

Longing for a walk in the woods or a tour through habitats that rarely see a human? No problem. There are plenty of virtual tours to satisfy you. Conservation International, for example, has a 360-degree tour through the Amazon that is narrated by an indigenous guide. Other virtual hikes you might enjoy include a trip through the redwoods at Muir Woods National Park , a stroll through the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, and a tour of New Zealand’s Great Walks .

As rival Apple is rumored to be eyeing an entrance into the metaverse, Microsoft, an early proponent of mixed and augmented reality applications, is criticized for its blurry vision behind the company's own HoloLens strategy. While HoloLens notched big early wins, including scoring a U.S. Department of Defense contract, subsequent delays, project cancellations, and high-profile executive departures may have resulted in the death of the HoloLens 3. Still, despite a scathing profile by Business Insider, it appears that Microsoft remains, at least publicly, committed to its HoloLens endeavors for now. The company has gone on record to refute the publication's reporting that HoloLens 3 has been killed.

There are a number of factors that may be causing Microsoft to pivot from its early bet on HoloLens, but the Microsoft profile cited internal divisions and the lack of a unified strategy among the top reasons for concern. As a result of the chaos, it appears that the largest collateral damage to Microsoft's infighting is the cancellation of its next-generation HoloLens 3 hardware.

Actronika, a startup company known for its HD haptics technology has a futuristic new product. Expected to be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2022 is Skinetic, a haptic vest that should make virtual reality experiences feel a lot more realistic.

Skinetic works much as you'd expect. The wearable vest makes VR feel more immersive by bringing life-like sensations and touch-like experiences to areas of the body like the chest when paired with a compatible headset. As reported by Business Wire, the technology "works with 20 patented vibrotactile voice-coil motors, capable of generating a wide range of vibrations that cover 100% of human vibrotactile perception."

It seems that virtual reality may be about to become even more real than ever before -- all thanks to a new VR headset. Pimax, a company that manufactures VR equipment, announced the upcoming release of a new 12K QLED VR headset that will feature technologies such as eye tracking, full-body tracking, and refresh rates of up to 200Hz. The headset, dubbed Pimax Reality 12K QLED, is part of the company's venture into the metaverse and a step toward bringing true realism to using VR.

During today's Pimax Frontier event, the company's representatives talked at length about the goals behind the product -- naturalness, self-awareness, and freedom. Pimax wants to bring these qualities into virtual reality and the metaverse, allowing people from all over the world to interact and explore virtual worlds together. While VR technology already allows for some of that to happen, Pimax wants to take it to the next level with its new invention -- the Reality 12K QLED VR headset.

6 Best VR Travel Apps to Explore the World With Your Smartphone

See the world on your smartphone with these amazing virtual reality travel apps for Android and iPhone.

You can enjoy a virtual trip to a dreamy beach or mountain without even needing to leave home. One of the wonders of VR technology is its power to transport you to many destinations around the world through your smartphone.

You do need a few components to make it work, but once you get the hang of it, you could spend a whole day exploring Earth’s most stunning locations. Below are six top VR travel apps for Android and iPhone, and a few tips to get you started.

Tools You Need for VR Travel Apps

Before you even try to embark on a virtual trip around the world, make sure you have all the tools you need. It's also a good idea to read up on how VR technology works. Our review of the Oculus Quest , for example, details a different kind of mobile headset.

Even within the category of phone-based headsets, devices differ from each other, both in terms of the VR device and your smartphone's capabilities. This means that your experiences might not be the same as someone else's.

Whatever the case, here are the basic boxes you need to tick if you want to enjoy phone-based VR to its fullest:

  • A smartphone that supports VR experiences, specifically with a Gyroscope sensor
  • A headset compatible with your phone and its size
  • Sometimes you need software like Google’s Cardboard, available in the Android and iOS app stores
  • VR travel apps or media, like 360 degree images and videos from YouTube or other providers

1. Within VR

One of the best apps for experiencing virtual reality on mobile devices, Within VR has several videos on offer. You can travel to real and animated worlds, all vivid and complete with audio. Among real-life options, you have North Korea, Hong Kong, Rwanda, and the Olympic National Park on offer.

Just tap a video that appeals to you and a profile will appear, containing a description and buttons to share, download, and stream the production. If you select the last option, you can then choose to view it in VR or normal mode.

Whatever interests you, from documentaries to spacewalks or horror stories, you’ll find something to entertain you for four minutes or even two hours. More productions are added over time, so it’s a good VR app to hold onto.

2. Sites in VR

You’ll find a wide range of destinations on this handy app, from waterfalls to ancient tombs. To begin with, Sites in VR offers fascinating and high-quality images in 3D and 360 degrees too.

However, if your interest is specifically virtual reality, just go onto the image you want and tap the VR icon. When you put on the headset with your phone mounted, you’ll get to feel like you’re there in person.

The app’s settings are fully adjustable too. Tailor your experience by changing the VR brightness, screen rotation, tool visibility, and more. Pairing it with extra handy travel planning apps can help you prepare for the perfect trip.

3. Egypt VR 360

Some travel apps focus on specific famous locations. Since Egypt is a favorite, the existence of a dedicated virtual tour is hardly a surprise.

Egypt VR 360 is simple but well-designed, collecting footage of the country’s most impressive landmarks. As soon as you open the software, you’ll get a row of locations and a brief description of each one. For a closer look, you just tap on a destination and then the VR icon.

With over a hundred options, you can visit the Sphinx, Philae Temple, and Sultan Hassan Mosque in one sitting. The app even features modern luxury hotels to explore. It’s not a bad way to pinpoint exactly where you want to go next time you visit Egypt in person.

4. Nepal VR

Here’s another travel app focused on a place people love to visit for their vacation. Nepal VR contains a collection of images, which you can look at in normal mode or virtual reality.

For the latter, just tap the familiar VR icon at the bottom of the app's display. Navigation is a bit awkward, but the scenes are worthwhile.

As well as finding yourself in the middle of temples, museums, and festivals, you can bring up info bubbles offering handy descriptions and facts, whether historical or cultural.

While the app does have room for improvement, it’s an easy way to get to know Nepal. Sit back and explore important locations, while learning about its society. Even as a virtual traveler, you can expand your knowledge of the world.

5. Tour It Virtually App

If you want to learn about India and see its winning locations up close, Tour It Virtually offer a mobile app alongside their website. Both platforms contain helpful details on the history, layout, and tourism advice of each location.

In terms of the VR feature, once again, you just need to navigate through the application to a destination you want to see. Once you reach its very informative profile, tap the image at the top and your smartphone will quickly switch to VR mode.

Despite some minor glitches, looking around is smooth and immersive enough to make the app a worthwhile investment.

6. Relax River VR

Apart from real-life destinations, virtual reality can also take you to worlds that programmers make up from scratch. Relax River VR is a great example, where you can jump into a boat and float through super detailed environments.

This app only features VR technology, so you definitely need a headset and related software to use it. Also, keep in mind that, now and then, ads will interrupt your journey.

On the plus side, it’s the simplest experience to get into. Just launch the app, set up your gear, and the virtual river tour begins.

You’ll pass waterfalls, ruins, and beautiful landscapes, rich in color and realistic lighting. There are clear influences from real destinations, so the experience is just as immersive and relaxing as visiting a digital Cairo or Honolulu.

Enjoy Virtual Reality Travel

Even though all these apps rank highly, some are better or less demanding than others. Some even offer fictional landscapes to dive into, which could appeal to gamers more. Whatever your interests, explore these options carefully to make the most of what your mobile and VR devices can provide.

Considering the apps are free, your main investment besides VR equipment will be your time and attention as you get to know more about the world’s wonders. Just how much you learn is entirely up to you.

And remember, virtual reality isn't just about travel. Once you've got the gear, you can enjoy loads of great VR games on your phone, too.

How to make a virtual tour with Android?

Capturing 360° images with your Android phone is a breeze. Anyone can do it, no special equipment is needed. Just follow this step-by-step guide and you will have your captures ready to upload to RealAdvisor VR in no time!

What app can I use to capture 360° images?

The native Camera app of most Android-based phone models should support the taking of 360° images natively. To check if this applies for you , open your phone app, tap on “Modes” and look for a “Photo Sphere” icon. It is also possible that this option is available directly in the bottom menu on some phones.

Android native camera app

If the “Photo Sphere” option is not available for you, you can choose from many free or premium applications available on Google Play . Our recommended app is Google Street View - it is free, easy to use and produces good results. See below for a detailed guide.

Capturing 360° images with the native camera app

To capture a 360° photo using the native camera app:

  • Open the “Photo Sphere” tool.
  • Point the phone directly in front of you and tap the capture button (the white circle in the bottom centre of the screen). A blue circle should appear on the screen.
  • Line up the white circle around the blue circle and hold your phone in place until it disappears.
  • Move your camera to the next dot and repeat the process.
  • Rotate the phone around you (to the sides, up and down) until all dots have been covered. Try to stand in the same spot during the process.
  • Tap “Done” once all the points have been covered.

Capturing 360° images with Google Street View app

To download the Google Street View app:

  • Open “Google Play” on your phone - you will find it among your applications
  • Tap the search bar on top and search for “Google Street View”
  • It should come up in your suggested results - tap the suggestion
  • Tap the “Install” button
  • Open the app once the installation is finished

Downloading the Google Street View app

To capture a 360° photo using the Google Street View app:

  • Open the application
  • Tap the “Create” icon in the bottom menu bar
  • Tap the “Photo Sphere” option at the top of the screen (you may be asked to allow the Google Street View application to use your device’s camera)
  • Point the phone directly in front of you, aligning with white circle around the first orange circle that appears and hold your phone in place until the image is captured
  • Continue panning around to capture all orange dots that appear and your 360° panorama is complete (try to keep your phone in one place and rotate it there, at the imaginary centre of a sphere)
  • Tap the “tick” icon at the bottom of the screen when done (it will turn green to indicate that the capture is fully done

Capturing a 360 image with Google Street View app

Uploading your images to RealAdvisor VR

Whether you captured your 360° photos using your phone’s native camera app or the Google Street View application, they should be saved in you phone’s Photos app (where you can find all the images captured with your camera), saved in:

  • A folder called “Panoramas” if you used the Google Street View app
  • A folder called “Photo Spheres” if you used the native camera app

To upload them in RealAdvisor VR, all you need to do is to click “Upload photos” when creating your tour and select the correct folder.

But for now, just for now, it’s all we have.

The world will still be there in a few months. Our loved ones may not, if we don’t stay home and wait this thing out. Use virtual travel to satiate your yearning for other climates and, of course, let it help you plan all those trips you’re going to take when this blows over. Where will you go first?

Virtual tour technology is a revolutionary element in the 21st century, for many industries such as real estate, hospitality, hotel & tourism, etc. Virtual reality has been booming since late 2019, then, after the Covid-19 outbreak & lockdowns, more and more people started to embrace advanced technology. In this article, we supply more pieces of information about the virtual tour app for android and PC. Especially, Panoee is certified as the best Tour Software for Windows.

What is Virtual Tour Software?

Virtual Tour software helps real estate agents, college recruiters, sales representatives and all kinds of businesses create a 360-degree view of the spaces and grounds that are being promoted to their potential customers.

virtual tour 360 software for beginners 01

Virtual tour software facilitates the design and presentation of virtual tours of properties and landscapes in a 360 virtual reality experience. Through VR, these software systems render a building plan, layout, and designs into a three-dimensional (3D) client experience using VR headgear and sound systems.

The benefits of the virtual tour platform

More property visits:

It’s difficult for agents and buyers to visit multiple properties or product areas in a single day. However, with virtual tour software, buyers can make multiple virtual visits to properties without having to travel to multiple physical locations, saving time and increasing the number of potential visits for both agents and buyers.

Effective, professional digital presentations:

In the business, effective, professional property presentations are key to making a sale. Virtual tour software helps agents create such presentations using 3D maps, interactive images, audio clips, videos, and panoramas that provide a more interesting experience than printed brochures.

The cost of virtual tour software

Almost of virtual tour platform vendors in the market are priced on a per-month or per-year basis and can be divided into three pricing tiers based on their starting price.

Pricing ranges per month:

$0 – $13

$13 – $45

This list summarizes pricing for the base plans of most virtual tour platforms. An enterprise or premium product that is priced higher often includes additional premium features such as custom branding of tours, storyboards, web editor, heatmap traffic, and advanced reporting.

Typical features of virtual tour software

A virtual tour is a marketing tool that can help bring new customers and clients to your business. It also supplies a virtual reality view of your business relayed in visual images that allow the viewer to be right at your location. It becomes the best way to accurately show what your location really looks like. So what are the typical features of virtual tour software? Let’s check below:

Virtual reality:

Free Virtual Tour app Android

A computer-generated digital tour that incorporates audio and video elements to create an interactive virtual experience.

Floor plans and maps:

Replicate and map actual floor designs and directions to a virtual floor plan using digital tools.

Drag-and-drop:

Ease to use “Drag-and-drop” digital elements while creating presentations and virtual tours.

Social sharing:

Share virtual tours on social media to reach a larger audience and promote listings.

Specific areas within a virtual tour act as a trigger. Hotspots are added to specific rooms or maps and are hyperlinked to perform specific actions when clicked.

Considerations when purchasing virtual tour software

A virtual tour is a vital research tool for users, allowing them to make more informed decisions about your company. A virtual tour allows users to get a feel for the atmosphere of the location quickly or the right size and layout for the event day. That is the reason why consider carefully when choosing and purchasing virtual tour software.

Industry-specific software:

Virtual tour software solutions are not only designed for real estate businesses but also to serve other business verticals. Virtual tour platform allows academic institutions to offer VR educational experiences to students, while sports and recreational-focused systems facilitate the design of indoor virtual training sessions. If your small business doesn’t operate in the real estate sector, explore VR applications within your niche to identify specialized offers before purchasing virtual tour software.

Completed and unfinished property tours:

Virtual tour software supports both completed and unfinished properties but uses different technologies to do so. When working with unfinished properties, designers use computer-generated imagery to show property elements that are still under construction. On another side, with completed properties, designers use photographic VT software, which transforms high-definition images and video of the actual site into a VR experience. Buyers should determine whether they need one or both of these applications, and shortlist virtual tour software accordingly.

Meta's new Quest 3 room scanning update is pure magic

The headset can now automatically map and identify objects in your room.

The updated room scanning feature with auto object identification on the Meta Quest 3

What you need to know

  • A hidden feature in the Meta Quest v64 update upgrades the headset's automatic room scanning feature.
  • Objects in the room will be automatically identified and named, like tables, screens, and couches.
  • The upgrade makes mixed reality experiences better and easier to use than ever before.

Mixed reality experiences on the Meta Quest 3 are about to get a lot better thanks to an upgraded room scanning feature that can automatically identify and name objects in your room. Previously, objects like tables, couches, windows, and other objects in the room would need to be manually measured and mapped.

The update comes hidden inside the V64 firmware update and was initially posted found by X (formerly Twitter) user Squashi and posted by by X user Luna . Meta didn't document the feature but had posted about it in late March , showcasing a research project it finalized that could automatically map objects in a room. No one expected the feature to be implemented so quickly after the initial announcement.

To try it out for yourself, open settings on your Meta Quest 3, tap Physical space, then launch the setup tool found under the spaces tab. Some users have reported that they don't yet have the feature even though they're on Quest v64. Meta tends to roll out some features in waves — like the lying down feature — so keep checking back to see if it's been enabled for you.

Meta announced enhanced passthrough quality as part of the V64 update but hasn't officially documented the new automated room scanning feature. I tried the room scanning feature on my Quest 3 and was blown away by the results.

Not only did it perfectly identify every supported object in my living room, but the names and categories of each object made them uniquely usable in mixed reality. For instance, my dining room table can automatically be used as a desk in Horizon Workrooms . Additionally, sitting on a couch can automatically launch seated mode to make casual gaming or video watching easier.

This is the latest move in Meta's strategy to make playing VR and mixed reality experiences as effortless as possible. The company just launched a new instant replay feature in its social app, Horizon Worlds, which automatically captures great gameplay moments in supported worlds, eliminating the need for manual gameplay recording.
