One of the largest aquariums in the world, the Dubai Mall Aquarium – officially called the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo (DAUZ) – is located within The Dubai Mall .

The aquarium houses over 140 species of aquatic life, including over 400 Sharks and Rays. It’s more than just a water tank. It’s an experience spread over different levels, complete with animal encounters and diving experiences.

Starting off at this 10 million litre tank and in front of the world’s largest aquarium viewing panel is where you will find the largest collection of Sand Tiger Sharks and schools of Giant Groupers, a marine ray-finned fish. Time your visit around 2:00 pm, and watch the resident divers dive into this large aquarium to feed the sharks.

Next, access the 48-metre walk-through Aquarium tunnel with a 270-degree panoramic view.  It’s the best vantage point for seeing some of the most incredible aquatic animals swim overhead while feeling submerged, and also for getting some of the best photos to show family and friends.

Another way to experience the sharks and rays at the aquarium is to take the glass-bottom boat rides . It’s a 10-minute ride, where you sit back and relax on a boat while enjoying a bird’s eye view of the largest aquarium in the world. To access this ride, you need to move on to the second level, where the Underwater Zoo is located.

At the Underwater Zoo, you will find three different ecological zones set up – the Rainforest, Rocky Shore and Living Ocean. It’s where you will spot friendly otters, have exotic parrots flying overhead, spot piranhas, see giant-sized spider crabs in water tanks, touch a starfish, be mesmerised by the colourful coral reefs and so much more.

This is also home to the undisputed star, the 5.1m-long Australian saltwater crocodile, weighing almost 750 kgs, named King Croc, along with his female companion.

Local to UAE, also present are the nocturnal desert animals, such as the fruit bats, barn owls and gerbils, that you can spot in the low light caved zone.

Top Tip: If you are able to time your visit right, you may spot regular feeding sessions take place for Rays at 10:30 am, Otters at 2:30 pm, Piranhas at 2:45 pm and King Croc at 3:00 pm. (Timings may be subject to change)

Once inside the aquarium, there’s a great list of animal encounters available to choose from, in addition to your basic entry ticket. Most are an additional AED 100 per person.

Penguin Encounter

Interact with a cute bunch of Antarctic Gentoo Penguins in the Penguin Cove. The cove is a purpose-built temperature-controlled facility, which replicates the Subantarctic environmental conditions, including the air temperature and their annual light cycle.

Step into a penguin- riendly terrain with temperatures up to 2 degrees as you learn about their fascinating natural behaviours, get up-close and personal, and also take lots of pictures with them.

King Croc Encounter

Not an encounter as close as the penguins, but considering the size of these sharp-teethed beasts, you will probably want to maintain a safe distance from them. Home to the impressive King croc and Queen croc, spend your time learning facts about these impressive cold- blooded creatures, such as their habitat, their dietary requirements and how much they weigh. Complete the experience by feeding these mighty crocodiles with complete safety measures in place.

Otter Encounter

Have the opportunity to get close to Asian small-clawed Otters, shake hands with them and learn various facts about their lifestyle. Watch these clever furry friends interact with their trainers and treat you to some cute moves.

Ray Encounter

Meet, touch and hand feed up to 50 sting rays at this exhilarating experience. Step into specially designed feeding platforms in waterproof gear, and enjoy the experience as these inquisitive, yet gentle creatures breach the water surface to grab the fish from your hands.

Shark Trainer Encounter

Stand in shallow tanks with your family, in your waist-high waterproof waders, as you experience interacting with sharks. Have the Bamboo Sharks and Leopard Sharks swim around you, as you learn how DAUZ takes care of them, complete from their feeding to breeding habits.

There are also several diving experiences available for you to choose from :

(some height and age restrictions apply)

Shark Dives

Embark on a memorable diving experience as you swim up close and personal with Tiger Sharks, Reef Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks, Giant Groupers and Stingrays. Don’t worry if you are not a certified scuba diver, as you can still experience the thrill of diving with sharks after completing a short Discover Scuba program with Al Boom Diving.

Cage Snorkelling

Similar to the scuba diving experience, but without the diving equipment and diving experience. Simply put on snorkelling gear, and feel the same thrills of getting close to sharks and rays in a safe cage setting. Participants need to be at least 8 years and older for this activity.

Shark Walker (Cage)

Put on an oxygenated helmet that allows you to breathe underwater and get close to the largest collection of sharks and other marine animals. Similar to the above activity, you will be suspended in a cage and won’t need any scuba diving experience. You can even film your experience using the DAUZ trainer’s GoPro, and have that memory to share with friends and family later.

A visit to DAUZ is wheelchair and stroller friendly, with designated stroller parking areas too.

No, DAUZ is not the only one. You can also visit The Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis , The Palm, Dubai. Different to DAUZ, The Lost Chambers is a unique aquarium allowing guests to delve deeper into the fascinating world of marine life while watching 65,000 marine animals swim in the Ambassador Lagoon and have the opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes tour or dive into the depths with an aquarium experience. There are similarities between the two, but each is unique, with different add-on experiences. The Lost Chambers is best when combined with a visit to Aquaventue at Atlantis Water Park to get the best value for money. DAUZ is more centrally located and easier to access for tourists only on a short stopover in the city – you can find our complete comparison of aquariums and marine experiences in the UAE here (there are some brilliant ones in Abu Dhabi too that you may not want to miss!)

Yes, guests are allowed to take photographs and videos, however keeping in mind the health of some of the animals, flash photography at specific exhibits is not allowed.

For the Basic experience, which includes the Aquarium Tunnel and the Underwater Zoo, it can take up to 2 hours. Extra experiences can take longer, depending on queuing and preparation time. If you are going for the Glass Bottom Boat ride, which lasts for 15-20 minutes, it is advisable to book the boat ride on arrival to avoid a long waiting period. You are free to stay as long as you wish in the different zones in DAUZ. Once you exit, re-entry is not allowed.

The viewing screen of the aquarium is free to all from within the Dubai Mall. You will certainly get a great taste of what’s inside from any floor in the central area of Dubai Mall – one of our favourite free things to do in Dubai . The Aquarium Tunnel, Underwater Zoo and animal encounter experience all come with a cover charge, as we’ve detailed above.

Visiting the Dubai Aquarium soon? Discover what you’ll find here and check out the best Dubai Aquarium tickets to make the most of your money and time!

The Dubai Aquarium is one of Dubai’s most visited attractions, and visiting it is one of the best things to do in Dubai . Since it’s enjoyed by children and grown-ups alike, it’s the perfect go-to place for families, and for everyone hoping to be marveled by the astonishing view of thousands of animals swimming in front of and around you.

Whether you’d like to witness from the other side of the glass or get in there for a memorable diving experience, there’s an activity for everyone at the Dubai Aquarium in Dubai Mall.

I’m personally not a huge fan of aquariums, but since I was living in Dubai I decided to go check out this attraction that is one of the most popular in the city. I loved the tunnel, while I liked less the Underwater Zoo (more info in the section about sustainability). In any case, I was glad I got to visit!

⚠️ Before we move on, notice that Dubai is home to two big aquariums, the Dubai Aquarium we’ll be discussing in this post, and the Lost Chambers Aquarium at the Atlantis . Don’t confuse them!

🕤 The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo opens from Sunday to Wednesday from 10 AM to 10 PM , and from Thursday to Saturday until midnight . The last admission is 45 minutes prior to its closing time.

How to get to the Dubai Aquarium

📍 Dubai Aquarium Location – it’s inside the Dubai Mall, which is a whole other attraction in itself. In fact, I’ve written a whole post about all the fun things you can do at the Dubai Mall .

▶️ One of the most popular ways to get there is by Metro (the Red Line). The nearest metro station is the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station , and from here you have to walk through the Metro Link Bridge, a passage that gets you directly from the station to the mall.

▶️ Alternatively, you can get there by bus . Route 27 and Route 29 leave you on the lower ground floor of the Mall.

▶️ If you’d rather not depend upon public transport, use Careem to call a taxi or Uber.

▶️ You can also get there with the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour . You’ll get off right outside of the Mall, and when your visit to the Dubai Mall Aquarium is done, hop on again to continue exploring the city.

If you plan on getting there by any other means, the Dubai Aquarium address is Doha Street, Sheikh Zayed Road in Downtown Dubai.

What You’ll Find at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo in Dubai

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is home to 33 thousand animals , including otters, penguins, sharks, rays and an immensity of all kinds of fish. Just seeing these many animals swimming around in their 10 million-liter tank is an overwhelming experience, but there are really fun activities at the Aquarium, besides watching.

The visit starts from the Dubai Aquarium Tunnel , which for me is the absolute highlight of the visit. You may be tempted to rush to go the next area, but take your time to soak it in!

visit aquarium dubai mall

The 48-meter tunnel allows you to walk below the tunnel, therefore being completely surrounded by water and its inhabitants , making you feel in the midst of it all without getting wet. For people who don’t scuba dive, it’s probably the closest they’ll ever be to these beautiful animals, especially the sharks and manta rays.

📷 If you’re looking to take a picture with no else like the one above, you can either be the first in line at the ticket office and run here before everyone else arrives (that’s what i did!), or you can be one of the first visitors and wait for the perfect time where all other people have passed to the next section. If you arrive later in the day, forget about it! The Dubai Aquarium is usually pretty crowded, and I don’t see it happening.

visit aquarium dubai mall

The exterior of the tunnel can be seen from the Dubai Mall (although of course you’ll be separated a few meters from the glass). If you just want to take a glimpse to the aquarium, you don’t even have to buy a ticket, although for me being inside the tunnel was totally worth the cost.

You can even get into a glass-bottom boat to slide on the surface of the tank , and see the animals at your feet, but there’s an additional fee for this.

The Underwater Zoo is divided into three zones , each of them adequate to the needs of its inhabitants. The first zone, the Rainforest Area , hosts freshwater animals such as otters, catfish, and piranhas and a few colorful parrots.

visit aquarium dubai mall

The second one, Rocky Shore Area , is home to the Dubai Aquarium penguins and spider crabs.

The third zone, the Living Ocean , has all the marine animals found in the oceans. Here you’ll find all kinds of smaller fishes and jellyfishes.

visit aquarium dubai mall

You can also see King Croc , a crocodile from Australia that weighs 750 kg (1653 pounds) and is over 5 meters (16 feet) long! King Cros has sort of become the mascot of the place, and spends his days hanging out with his female companion, Queen Croc. This crocodile was labeled a problematic crocodile (the guy has quite the temper!), and so he has to stay in a protected environment such as this one.

visit aquarium dubai mall

If you’re looking to actually get in the water, there are some crazy experiences you can do for an extra fee and that will remain in your memory forever.

Try the Dubai Aquarium shark dive for the thrill of a lifetime , getting face to face with the largest collection of Sand Tiger sharks in the world! Alternatively, you can opt for an educational dive to learn about shark conservation and underwater photography, or dive (in the safety of a cage) during the shark’s feeding time.

If you don’t have your diving certificate, you can also snorkel in the aquarium , and get to know the sharks and other creatures from the safety of a cage; all enjoyment and no worries.

For kids unwilling to get into the tank (unwilling parents, rather!) the Ray Encounter allows them to meet, touch and feed 50 rays , and they can also witness the otters from up close, or meet the Dubai Aquarium crocodile King Croc during feeding time. The activities are, besides entertaining, very educational.

There’s also a fantastic Virtual Reality experience that will enable you to swim among whale sharks in the Maldives, trek among elephants in South Africa, or meet the gorillas in the forests of Uganda, all without leaving Dubai Mall.

Tips for your Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo Visit

What’s the best time to visit the dubai aquarium .

The best time to visit the Dubai Aquarium is early in the morning . Arrive and queue up before opening time (10 AM) to avoid the crowds, which is especially important if you want to take pictures at the tunnel without strangers appearing in it, or if you’re going with children.

Visiting in the evening is also a good idea when the crowds are already gone (remember to get there at least 45 minutes before closing time to guarantee your entrance).

How Much Time Do You Need for Your Visit?

A visit to the Dubai Aquarium can last as long as you want, once you make your entrance. If you’re only interested in watching the animals and walking through the tunnel, and you’re not visiting with kids, plan to spend about an hour there. If you’re going with your children, however, or want to experience some of the activities, you may end up spending 2 to 3 hours in the Aquarium.

Unless you have other plans for after your visit, you can then spend some time wandering around the Dubai Mall. There are several restaurants and cafés near the Aquarium if it’s mealtime when you’re done visiting.

What Should You Know Before Visiting the Dubai Aquarium?

The Dubai Aquarium is suitable for all ages and a great plan for enjoying yourself. Here are some extra tips to help you make the most of your visit:

➤ Buy your tickets in advance to save some money and avoid scouting for ticket booths or queuing to get them.

➤ Taking pictures is allowed at the Aquarium, however, the flash could harm or alarm the animals, so using it is not allowed.

➤ Remember to take your ID or Passport, as you may be asked for it at the Dubai Aquarium entrance.

➤ If you’re engaging in an activity, be there at least ten minutes before its scheduled time.

Is the Dubai Aquarium Sustainable?

This is a question widely asked about the Dubai Aquarium, especially by those concerned about the ethics and well-being of animals in general.

We usually don’t visit zoos and aquariums unless we know that management cares about the well-being of the animals and manages the establishment in an ethical and responsible way. Before going to Dubai, I read that both of Dubai’s aquariums are sustainable ones, so I wanted to check them out and report back on my thoughts.

Here are some facts about the Dubai Mall aquarium’s sustainability, as well as my personal opinion on things.

In the Living Ocean area of the Dubai Underwater zoo, the temperature and pH level are controlled every day to match the seawater in the regions. The aquarium uses natural seawater, and a certain amount of the water is removed daily, substituted with fresh water that is pumped into the tank. Checks on the animals’ health, sanity level of the water, maintenance of the tank, and prevention of algae formations are also carried out on a daily basis, before the Aquarium’s opening time.

visit aquarium dubai mall

In the Rocky Shore area, ice beds have been created in this zone, temperatures are regulated at sub-zero and the tank is replenished with freshly shaved ice daily.

Each species of animal has its own food preferences, and they are all met; so is the frequency with which each animal needs to be fed – the otters, for instance, eat twice a day, while the crocodiles, due to their slow metabolism, are fed twice a week.

The sharks change their food preferences relatively often, so their menu is rotated accordingly; vitamins and nutritional supplements are included in their diets.

The Dubai Aquarium chooses its animals ethically and brings in only those that are cleared by international treaties such as CITES ( Convention in International Trade of Endangered Species ). The aquarium promotes and supports several environmental projects and is committed to building awareness of the importance of conservation.

Personally, I thought that the animals at Dubai Aquarium were well taken care of, although please keep in mind I’m no expert and I don’t have scientific knowledge regarding how sea life needs to be taken care of.

I was impressed with the Dubai Aquarium Tunnel, but less impressed with the Underwater Zoo where some of the tanks seemed pretty small for the sealife inside of it. I also did not buy a ticket to check out the penguins area, but in general it’s better to avoid these types of animals’ encounters.

Other Things To Do Near the Dubai Aquarium

Since the Dubai Aquarium is hosted inside the Dubai Mall, you’ve got plenty of other things to do around it:

  • Check out the Dubai Mall Waterfall inside the Dubai Mall.
  • Explore the Dubai Mall – there’s so much to see and do!
  • Go up the Burj Khalifa for incredible views over the city.
  • Take some photos at the Wings of Mexico statue, located close to the Dubai Mall.
  • Enjoy the Dubai Fountain Show, which happens every night right outside the mall.

Dubai Aquarium FAQ

No, it’s not free. You can buy your Dubai Aquarium ticket here . However, you can see part of the immense tank and its wildlife from inside the Dubai Mall, though, so if you only want a glimpse without having to get a Dubai aquarium ticket, you can – it’ll make you want to get a ticket though, trust me!

The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo tickets cost costs around 35 USD at the time of writing. You can check here the current Dubai aquarium ticket price .

A visit to the Dubai Aquarium can take you from 1 hour if you’re only planning to see the animals in the tank, to 2 or 3 hours if you’re visiting with children or planning to participate in some of the activities, from taking the glass-bottom boat to diving with sharks.

Aquariums and Zoos are generally questioned for their ethics and treatment of the animals. While it’s perfectly understandable for some people to avoid these places due to personal beliefs, and animals being in captivity is definitely not ideal, the Dubai Aquarium is not cruel. The animals are well taken care of, fed, and attended to. They live in a 10 million-liter tank that gives them enough space, and the Aquarium supports environmental initiatives and has school programs to educate on conservation, Ocean health, and marine life. However, I personally avoided the penguins’ encounter area for ethical reasons, and I suggest you do the same.

Yes, you can get into the water in the Dubai Mall aquarium. Activities such as diving and snorkeling are available for an extra fee.

Both aquariums offer spectacular sights and dives to experience the aquarium from within. The Lost Chambers has the added charm of its Atlantis recreation and decor and offers tours about the mythological lost city. The Dubai Aquarium, however, holds the title of the biggest suspended aquarium in the world, and that is something pretty impressive to look at. If you’re only interested in watching the animals or are visiting the Aquaventure Waterpark, then head to the Lost Chambers Aquarium. If you’d like to swim with sharks or feel surrounded by marine life while walking the famous tunnel, your choice should be the Dubai Mall aquarium.

Dubai Aquarium is home to over 400 sharks, as well as other 33,000 aquatic animals including rays, otters, penguins, and crocodiles.

In 2010, there was a leak in the Dubai Aquarium’s tank due to a small break in the glass. The leak came from one of the panel joints and it was fixed without there being further consequences.

Is Visiting the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo Worth It?

visit aquarium dubai mall

When looking up things to do in Dubai I am sure you already found out about the Dubai Aquarium, but did you know it is located in a massive shopping mall? There is a huge glass wall in the Dubai Mall that gives you a glimpse into the Dubai Aquarium and it is actually free to view for the public. So why buying a ticket for the Dubai Aquarium? In this blog we will tell you our experiences and why we recommend visiting the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo.

Aquariums and zoos can be found all over the world. They are often interesting because you can see animals that are native to the country you’re visiting. I’ll bet you’ve never visited an aquarium or zoo that was so easily accessible and actually located in a major shopping mall.

Keep reading and join us while we take you to one of the coolest places to visit in Dubai.

Location & opening hours

The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is located in the famous Dubai Mall. I have to admit, it’s strange to see a massive aquarium right next to H&M. It is unique and crazy at the same time, but hey, it’s Dubai, anything is possible!

The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo are open 365 days a year, on weekdays from 10.00AM – 10.00PM and weekends from 10.00AM – 00.00 Midnight.

Want to send all your pictures and videos to your friends while enjoy the Dubai activities? Traveltomtom recommends you to get a prepaid sim card for the UAE at Dubai Airport . Aquarium Tank

dubai aquarium glass wall

The Dubai Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world. It has a volume of more than 10 million Liters, and is sized 32 by 8 meters. The aquarium includes various shark species including the largest collection of sand tiger sharks anywhere, rays, giant bass, and huge schools of the most diverse fish species.

Even though the Dubai Aquarium is part of the Underwater Zoo, you don’t necessarily need to buy a ticket if you just want to see the aquarium. The largest part of the aquarium is located in the public space of the Dubai Mall, and is therefore accessible to everyone, and free to view. It is actually already easy to spot various animal species.

However, the viewing is only allowed from a fair distance and you won't be able to get close to the glass wall. This is only for those who buy a ticket for the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo. But buying a ticket gives you much more than just getting close to the glass wall.

If you want that cool picture with you and the massive glass wall of the Dubai Aquarium you will have to buy a ticket.

Aquarium Tunnel

dubai mall aquarium tunnel

Although it is nice to view the aquarium from a distance for free, it is highly recommended to buy a ticket and thus be able to walk through the aquarium tunnel. It is very special to walk through the 48 meter aquarium tunnel and be surrounded by the underwater world and marine life. It’s actually really fun to walk through and have sharks and stingrays swimming overhead, one of the many amazing things to do in Dubai.

There is much more you can do here, what about a glass-bottom boat tour, have a mermaid makeover for the kids, get wet in a snorkeling cage, or the ultimate adrenaline kick, put on an oxygen tank to go swimming with the sharks. Yes, you can go on a guided scuba dive inside the aquarium and get up close and personal with the marine life.

Underwater Zoo

underwater zoo dubai mall

Right next to the aquarium you’ll find the Underwater Zoo, this is an underwater zoo with a large number of aquariums. These aquariums contain thousands of fish, including a large school of piranhas. You will also find reptiles, otters, crocodiles, parrots, jellyfish and even penguins.

They are all animals that are suitable to keep in this zoo. Don’t expect to encounter elephants or lions here, because you won’t find them.

The Underwater Zoo is built like a rainforest environment, which makes it actually really cool, and bizarre at the same time, realizing you’re actually still inside the Dubai Mall.

It has to be said, if you want to visit the penguins, this is not included in the regular tickets, you have to buy an extra ticket.

Animal Encounters

dubai underwater zoo

There are several animal encounters you can do while visiting the aquarium and zoo. Keep in mind that you have to pay extra if you want to do that. You can go behind the scenes for an exclusive tour of the otters home in the zoo and interact with these cute animals.

Or how about meeting, touching and feeding fifty rays in an exhilarating interaction with these wonderful creatures. And what do you think of the more family friendly experience of the shark trainer encounter, where you will be educated about shark species as well as how they’re taken care of in Dubai. Learning all about sharks while going behind the scenes and assisting the staff.

Based on the three principles of ‘Do, Find and Think’, students can observe, investigate, and discuss ecological concepts with trained educators while interacting with a diverse range of aquatic life. All programs have been approved by the Ministry of Education as a recommended program for school field trips.

Traveltomtom does of course not encourage the caging of wild animals, but we do think that aquariums and underwater zoo's can have a positive effect on conservation works by educating and showing how beautiful but moreover how precious and vulnerable life on our planet is.

When visiting the Dubai Aquarium we realized even more how unique and special the underwater world on earth actually is. Learning about the hidden life below the surface remembers you once again that the ocean is the source of life and that we reached a point of no return when it comes to preserving the planet.

Again every Traveltomtom team member believes that animals should live in the wild. Having that said, we do find the educational aspect of zoos and aquariums rather interesting and good. Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo offers you a fascinating insight into the world’s most mysterious marine life and that is we definitely recommend visiting the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

Traveltomtom’s recommendation

If you visit Downtown Dubai, and the Dubai Mall, and you want to visit both the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo as well as At the Top, the observation deck at Burj Khalifa , we recommend you to book a combo ticket for both attractions. Buying the combo ticket is definitely the way to go if you want to visit both Dubai tourist attractions. Our Dubai travel tip to save you a few dollars!

Encounter With A Feeding Shark

Encounter With A Feeding Shark

Sharks terrify the majority of people. This aquatic predator has long been regarded by all of us as one of the most dreadful creatures on the planet. The eerie music from Steven Spielberg's classic "Jaws," whose antagonist is one of the most merciless antagonists in movie history, comes to mind just by mentioning the creature.

However, the underwater exhibit at the Dubai Aquarium has significantly contributed to shattering this prejudice. The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo now offers a brand-new shark feeding event that up-closes you to these fascinating predators for the first time.

Shark Dives

The best part is that you can take part in this shark dive even if you aren't a trained diver. At the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, anyone from anywhere in the world is welcome to dive in without a diving license.

Cage Snorkelling

Cage Snorkelling

Here is another risk-free option you could choose if you believe shark diving is a tad dangerous. Thousands of aquatic species can be seen up up and personal during a cage snorkeling excursion at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo. You only need to put on snorkeling gear, climb into a cage, and plunge into an aquarium full of various aquatic animals, including sharks and rays, for this safe excitement.

24 Best Things to Do in Dubai

From exploring traditional souks to skiing indoors, here's how to get to this know this dazzling city.

In Dubai , it's possible to chill on the beach, stroll in the desert, and have a cocktail at the top of skyscraper all in the same day. “Dubai’s got a glorious magnetism to it," says Nada Badran, a Dubai resident for more than 30 years and experience curator and tour guide with Wander With Nada . "There’s so much palpable energy in the air, and every day the city offers a new opportunity for creative fulfillment."

Despite the above, Dubai is sometimes shrouded by misconceptions, says Isabella Sullivan, founder and editor of Near+Far , a travel magazine for modern Middle East travelers. “The first misconception is that it’s all glossy, fake, and superficial, which couldn’t be further from the truth," she told Travel + Leisure . Another misconception is that it’s not a safe place to visit. On the contrary, Dean Hayter, travel product manager at Origin , says that “living in Dubai is the safest I have ever felt in any city."

So if any of the above has kept you from booking a trip to this vibrant city, you can set your mind at ease. And once you've arrived, here are the best things to do in Dubai.

Related : The Best Times To Visit Dubai for Beautiful Weather, Lower Prices, and Fewer Crowds

Learn about local coffee culture.

The Arab world is known for its coffee — from traditional Turkish coffee to modern delights like cereal lattes — and Dubai has myriad cafes in which to get your daily fix. “[There are] so many cool, unique, artsy, and design-led coffee shops," says Sullivan. "Some have beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces, while a new slew of them have moody interiors and unique, immersive themes." Sullivan’s favorites are The Grey , Nightjar Coffee and Tom&Serg .

Cruise Dubai Creek.

In the past, Dubai Creek was part of the trade route connecting ports in the Arabian Gulf. Today, it's a beautiful way to see the city , and one of Hayter's top suggestions in Dubai. “Go to Dubai Creek before sunset and hire an abra (traditional wooden boat) for a private cruise," Hayter says. "When you're in the middle of the creek and the sky turns pink and the call to prayer fills the sky, it is magical.”

Go stargazing in the desert.

Fascinated by the night sky? Book a night safari with ecotourism company Platinum Heritage , which includes guidance from an astronomer and use of a telescope. “The sky is so dark that you get to see the most incredible blanket of stars," says Hayter. "If you're with an astronomer who can explain everything you're looking at, it's an amazing experience."

Play a round of golf.

Golf may not come to mind immediately when planning a vacation to the Middle East, but Dubai has several recognizable courses, including The Emirates Golf Club – Majlis Course , which is considered one of the best in the destination. Kelvin Cheung, chef partner at Jun’s and a Dubai resident for two years, suggests checking to see if any of your credit cards include free rounds of golf as a perk. Note that the best time to golf here is between November and March, when the weather is more comfortable.

Relax at a Dubai beach.

“Dubai has some great and uncrowded public beaches, where you can just enjoy the warm Arabian sea and sunshine at no cost,” says Sullivan. Try Kite Beach, since it also offers fantastic showers and bathrooms, plus a handful of food stands and coffee shops. For an extra treat, rent a Careem bike and cruise along Kite Beach’s lengthy boardwalk.

Enjoy the diverse dining scene.

Between the innovative design of its restaurants and the exceptional diversity of its culinary offerings, Dubai is a fantastic place for foodies. When planning your meals, consider chic restaurants like Amazonico , which takes you on a sensory journey through the Amazon; SEVA , a laid back, plant-based cafe within a wellness center; and Jun’s , a fusion restaurant with the Burj Khalifa skyscraper as its backdrop and where the chef aims to introduce himself to each table. “The city offers a wide range of flavors and textures, and truly pushes boundaries," says chef Cheung of Jun's. "Because the Dubai food scene offers top-quality food and service in every corner of the city, my team and I stay motivated to deliver excellence with every experience. There are very few places in the world that cater to such a diverse set of people.”

Indulge in the facilities of a luxe hotel.

Visiting a world-class hotel in Dubai and enjoying its wellness offerings is a must. “Dubai has so many gorgeous hotels, and more often than not, you can purchase day passes to enjoy their facilities, including beaches, pools, and spas; some also have tennis and padel courts,” says Sullivan. "Apps like Privlee and Viya are great for tourists and residents; you pay a fee and have unlimited access to partner hotels, beach clubs, and gym facilities, so you can try somewhere new every day.”

Get lost in the streets of Old Dubai.

“I am probably at my happiest when wandering in Old Dubai’s streets, sikkas (alleys), and souks , which are swarming with activity," says Badran of Wander With Nada. "The labyrinthine souks are where everyone wants to sell you something; ‘Shakira’ and ‘professor’ are heard countless times, as vendors appear to have unanimously agreed it's the best way to capture customers’ attention. People duck into beckoning small shops where stools are commonplace, as is a cup of chai, and every transaction involves a lengthy bargaining debate. Sounds of carts mingle with scents of aromatic spices and musky perfume."

Explore Al Serkal Avenue.

Al Serkal Avenue is an industrial warehouse district that has been transformed into a creative hub. “It’s an oasis of art, community spaces, and all things quirky," says Badran. "To visit is to be transported to another world of art galleries, cozy cafes, boutique shops, and plenty more." The venue's galleries are open to the public at no cost, and it's fun to wander here even if you’re not an art buff.

Go on a desert adventure.

Tour through the desert in a 4x4, or go extreme off-roading in a dune buggy or on a quad bike with Expert Rangers . And if you want the full Arabian desert experience, book the package that includes sandboarding, camel riding, an Arab dinner, and entertainment.

Get the best view of Dubai.

If you're a thrill seeker, consider a dive with Skydive Dubai . Divers fall 13,000 feet through the sky over the Palm Jumeriah — what a memory to take home with you.

Book a traditional spa treatment.

A hammam is a traditional cleansing ritual that involves hot steam, a revitalizing scrub, rhassoul clay, and vitamin-E rich products — you are bound to exit this experience feeling the softest you’ve ever felt. We recommend booking a hammam treatment at the Guerlain Spa at the One&Only The Palm.

Head to Hatta.

Hatta is in the Hajar Mountains, about 60 miles outside of Dubai. This is the perfect place to appreciate nature — go for a hike with spectacular views, kayak in the reservoir, or mountain bike on designated trails. There's also a heritage village that’s home to restored traditional houses and a defense tower.

Scuba dive in a pool.

Deep Dive Dubai isn’t your typical swimming pool — it’s the deepest in the world at about 197 feet deep. Scuba, freediving, and snorkel courses are offered here, and if you're already certified, you're welcome to explore this underwater world designed to look like a sunken city.

Visit the Museum of the Future.

This building is an architectural wonder in shape and design. The exterior is wrapped in Arabic poetry, and the structure's circular shape represents humanity while the abyss in the middle signifies the indefinite future. Inside you will find immersive exhibitions that ask observers to reflect on the world, the future, and themselves. Purchase tickets in advance, as the museum is a popular attraction and day-of tickets aren't always available.

Visit Expo City Dubai.

This venue is a future-forward miniature city that maintains much of what was offered during the World Expo (Expo City was part of the exhibitions, which took place in 2022, delayed due to the pandemic). The sustainable city offers educational experiences and attractions that revolve around global topics, plus multiple playgrounds and parks .

Spend a day at Dubai’s newest resort.

Beyonce performed an exclusive show for the opening ceremony of Atlantis The Royal — what a way to get the world's attention. This ultra-luxurious resort is worth checking out, even if you aren’t staying the night. It’s home to eight restaurants helmed by celebrity chefs (including Nobu by the Beach), a sky-high infinity pool, a club with panoramic views of the skyline, and dozens of other experiences.

Book a tour with Wander with Nada.

Nada of Wander With Nada is a fun and peppy guide, sure, but she's also incredibly knowledgeable about Dubai, and therefore just the guide you want to get to know the destination. Choose from several tour options, including one that highlights Dubai landmarks and another that focuses on Old Dubai.

Party at a beach club.

Beach clubs in Dubai are worth the hype, with Twiggy by La Cantine and Nammos being two of our favorites. Rent a cabana or beach chair and spend the entire day (or just a few hours) soaking in the sun with a drink in hand, listening to vibey beats.

Shop in Dubai Gold Souk.

The streets may as well be paved with gold in Dubai's Gold Souk , a fascinating marketplace with nearly 400 vendors. You will see gold of all karats and styles, from simple to elaborate. Note that if you do plan to purchase something special, don’t be shy about negotiating for a better price, as that is custom here.

Shop in a Dubai mall.

Dubai has no shortage of malls, where you'll find just about every brand you can name. Visit Dubai Mall to see one of the largest malls in the world (it's also home to the Dubai Aquarium); the textile souk for traditional shopping; or the Dubai Design District (D3), which is home to pop-up fashion boutiques and rotating art installations.

Go skiing indoors.

If you can dream it, Dubai can execute it, and Ski Dubai is proof. Want to ski indoors then step outside into warm weather? This is the place. Maintaining freezing temperatures all year long, this ski resort provides guests with ski suits to keep them cozy. Lessons are available, and there's even a chair lift — and penguins — inside.

Order a tailor-made outfit.

If there’s one thing foreigners may not know about the Middle East, it’s that the tailors are amazing, and that most locals have everything from simple, everyday outfits to wedding gowns tailor-made for them. A trip to Dubai is therefore an opportunity to have your dream design brought to life. Visit the textile souk for fabric, get measured by a tailor, and voila, you’ll have a new outfit within days. Getting fit for traditional dishdasha (for men) or abaya (for women) is a nice way to bring a bit of Dubai home, too.

Ride the Dubai Metro.

The Dubai Metro is an extensive and well-maintained public transportation system that connects major locations in Dubai at an affordable price. Residents typically use these trains for their daily commute, so hop on a train to feel like a local.
