What Is The Best Time to Visit the Eiffel Tower? (Day vs. Night)

What is the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France? Morning, afternoon, sunset or night?

I recently took my third trip to Paris, France, and this time I was accompanied by several first-time European travelers. At the top of their Paris bucket list was a trip to the world-famous Eiffel Tower, and of course they asked me about the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower. Should we go up first thing in the morning? Or wait until dark? Or something in the middle?

The best time to go up the Eiffel Tower depends on a few things, including the weather,  your tolerance for crowds and what you hope to see from the top.  Below, I’ll explain the difference between visiting the Eiffel Tower at different times of day, and ultimately what I think is the #1 best time to visit the Eiffel Tower.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

Going Up the Eiffel Tower in the Morning

In my opinion, the worst time to go up the Eiffel Tower is in the morning.  In the morning, fog often rises off the Seine River and obscures your view of the city, especially in cooler weather. I would never book Eiffel Tower tickets online for a morning spot, simply because your view will be so dependent on the weather.

However, if you wake up early in Paris and you find it’s a beautiful, clear day, mornings are one of the less-busy times at the Eiffel Tower (particularly from 9:00 am to 11:00 am).  You might be able to book a last-minute ticket online, or arrive early at the ticket office to snag one of the small number of tickets they hold back for walk-up visitors (the number of these tickets varies from day to day, and lines can be long, so go early!).

Going Up the Eiffel Tower in the Afternoon

I would also try to avoid visiting the Eiffel Tower in the afternoon.  The hours from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm are the busiest, and they are most popular with large tour bus groups and groups of schoolchildren.  The morning fog may have lifted, but now your view will be obscured by dozens of selfie sticks.

If you do have to visit during the afternoon, aim for around 12:00 to 1:00, as that is when the large groups are most likely stopping elsewhere for lunch. On my first trip to Paris this was about when we went up, and there was definitely a noticeable decrease in crowds around the prime lunch hour.

(Yes, at publication time in March 2024 selfie sticks are allowed at the Eiffel Tower!)

Going Up the Eiffel Tower at Sunset

Personally, I think the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower is at sunset. You can use a website like this one to see when the sun will set during your stay in Paris.  If you schedule your ascent for about an hour before sunset and stay an hour or two, then you’ll get to see three different views of Paris:

  • Paris by day, with views to Montmartre’s Sacre Coeur and beyond
  • Paris by sunset, as the sky turns gold and the street lights begin to twinkle
  • Paris by night, with monuments like the Arc de Triomphe and the Palais Garnier aglow

A sunset visit to the Eiffel Tower also positions you perfectly to descend the tower (I recommend going down using the stairs!), cross the Seine and head to the Trocadero for the best views of the nighttime light show that illuminates the tower hourly when darkness falls.

Going Up the Eiffel Tower at Night

When most people think of the Eiffel Tower at night, they think of the hourly light show that can be seen from around the city. Few people think about going up the Eiffel Tower after nightfall, making it the ideal time to ascend the tower and escape the crowds. When the whole city pauses to watch the lights, they’ll actually be watching you !

Visiting the Eiffel Tower at night is a great option for return visitors who have already seen the city once, or for anyone planning a romantic night on the town in Paris.  For a truly special experience, consider combining your nighttime visit with dinner at the Michelin-starred Jules Verne restaurant on the tower’s second floor, or at Madame Brasserie, a more-affordable restaurant on the first floor.

On my most recent trip to Paris (March 2024) I went up the Eiffel Tower at night, and it was a lovely experience.  It wasn’t very crowded, and the city sparkled beneath us.  We approached from the Bir-Hakeim metro station and had a gorgeous view of the hourly light show from the Promenade Marie de Roumanie before going across the street to ascend the tower.

So what is the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower?

In order, I would rank the best times to visit the Eiffel Tower as follows:

  • Sunset 🌇 – You’ll get to experience the tower by day and by night.
  • Morning (as long as it’s not foggy) 🌁 – If you get lucky you’ll get gorgeous views and fewer crowds.
  • Night 🌃 – Imagine the Belle Époque as the city glows beneath you.
  • Afternoon 🏙️ – It’s crowded but doable if it’s the only thing that works with your schedule.
  • Morning (if it’s foggy) 🌁 – Not worth the € 20 ticket for views like this . 😂

What if tickets are sold out for the time I want to go up the Eiffel Tower?

If there’s a particular time when you want to visit the Eiffel Tower but no tickets are available on the official site, joining a guided tour may be an alternative. Tour companies buy blocks of Eiffel Tower tickets, meaning that they may have availability even if the official site doesn’t.  Here are a few to check out:

  • Eiffel Tower Summit or Second Floor Tour – Meet across the street from the tower and join your guide on a tour to either the second floor or the summit.
  • Eiffel Tower Entry Ticket with Optional Summit Access – Don’t want to wait around with a tour group?  This Eiffel Tower experience has a host who will take you up to the second floor, point you towards the summit elevator (if selected) and then leave you to visit on your own. Ideal for independent travelers.
  • Eiffel Tower Guided Tour by Elevator (With Optional Seine River Cruise) – Cross two must-do activities off your Paris itinerary with this Eiffel Tower tour followed by a one-hour boat cruise along the Seine that you can do any time after you come down from the tower (the boat quay is near the base of the tower).

The Eiffel Tower is one of the few attractions in Paris that isn’t included in the Paris Museum Pass .  I still recommend getting this official city card that includes admission to other once-in-a-lifetime sights like The Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe.

Here's Why You Should Visit the Eiffel Tower at Exactly 1 A.M. (Video)

visit eiffel tower at night or day

There’s never a bad time to see the Eiffel Tower, but there is one time that is arguably the most spectacular.

According to HuffPost , while the Eiffel Tower is stunning during just about every part of the day, the absolute best time to visit is at 1 a.m.

Most people know that as soon as the sun sets, the Eiffel Tower is lit up with golden lights that make the landmark look like it’s glowing. This brilliant light display of 20,000 twinkling lights occurs every hour on the hour.

But 1 a.m. is the last light show for the Eiffel Tower before they do it all again the next day, HuffPost reported. Naturally, since this is sort of the “finale” of the light display, it’s even more striking than ever.

According to HuffPost, the key factor that makes this light show stand out is that the tower turns off its golden, steady lights, so that only the twinkling, shimmering lights can be seen. The display only lasts five minutes, so it’s best to get a viewing spot early.

This view of the sparkling tower against the pitch-black sky is truly a one-of-a-kind sight to behold. It’s almost as if the tower is made entirely of very precise fireworks.

If you’re not convinced that this is a particularly special part of the night, you can see it for yourself on YouTube.

Of course, a YouTube video is no match for seeing the Eiffel Tower in person. So, the next time you plan a trip to Paris , make sure this 1 a.m. light show is on your to-do list.

The Eiffel Tower at Night: Where and When to See the Lights

Eiffel Tower lit by sunset

Want to see the Eiffel Tower lit up at night or even glowing with the light of fireworks? In this guide, I’ll share when you can see the Eiffel Tower sparkling, including from inside the tower itself.

It’s true — from the Louvre to the Arc de Triomphe to the Notre-Dame Cathedral (even in its partially renovated state), Paris is a city dotted with world-famous monuments. Yet none are as iconic as the Eiffel Tower. Better yet, this stunning Parisian monument puts on a light show of its own every evening.

Depending on what time of year you visit Paris, you can see fireworks spouting from the summit or the entire tower glowing bright pink. But no matter when you visit, you can always witness the magic of the Eiffel Tower at night, you just have to know when and where to look.

When can you see the lights on the Eiffel Tower?

If you’ve spent any significant amount of time in Paris, you’ve surely admired the Eiffel Tower by day, but as many Parisians will tell you, it’s even more majestic at night. Every evening at dusk, the tower is illuminated and casts a beautiful, golden glow over the city, highlighting the stunning Haussmanien architecture and numerous monuments.

The Eiffel Tower remains lit up from dusk until 2 a.m. (1 a.m. during winter), but the real spectacle happens every hour, on the hour. For five minutes, the tower is sparkling with 20,000 lightbulbs, and the summit’s searchlight scans the Parisian skyline making for a truly magical scene.

A new millennium: A brief history of the Eiffel Tower’s lights

Eiffel Tower lit by an orange sunset

The Eiffel Tower didn’t always put on a nightly light show. If we really look at it, it’s impressive how much effort it took to make this monument shine.

Back in 1999, the Eiffel Tower was set to be fitted out in thousands of lights to celebrate the new year. It took 25 mountain climbers just over five months to install 20,000 lightbulbs on the tower, and all to the tune of €4.5 million.

Well, the now-beloved sparkling lights of the Iron Lady were originally only meant to be a temporary exhibition to ring in the new millennium, but thankfully they stayed on and have been a permanent fixture since 2003.

The Eiffel Tower lights by the numbers

  • Number of lights: 20,000
  • Year launched: 1999
  • Cost: €4.5 million

Can you take photos of the Eiffel Tower lights at night?

You might have heard you’re not allowed to photograph the Eiffel Tower lights at night. However, as of 2016, you can take photos of the Eiffel Tower, even when it’s lit up at night, if it’s just for personal use, like holiday travel mementos.

If you want to take a photo of the Eiffel Tower illuminated for commercial purposes, that’s when the rules are different. The Eiffel Tower illumination is copyrighted as an artistic work, so taking photos or video of it for commercial purposes is prohibited (unless you have express permission from the Eiffel Tower). That’s why you’ll notice we don’t have any photos of the Eiffel Tower lit up on this blog, even though this post is all about the Eiffel Tower lights. We’re a tour company that works with the Eiffel Tower, and we don’t want to break France’s copyright law.

Watch the video above for a full explanation. It’s pretty interesting!

See the Eiffel Tower by daylight

Can you climb the eiffel tower at night.

The Eiffel Tower’s open hours during the peak season (June 1–Sept. 1) are usually 9 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., which means you can also climb the Eiffel Tower at night — and this is an experience I would definitely recommend. There’s nothing quite like being hundreds of feet above Paris and seeing the city and the tower light up and come to life as night falls.

Local tip: Try to plan your climb for during or just after sunset. You’ll be able to see a beautiful Parisian sunset and see the lights come on over the city, and of course on the tower itself.

The rest of the year the tower is open from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. So if you’re here during winter months, you can still climb it at night.

When to see the Eiffel Tower fireworks

Bastille day.

Every year on the 14th of July, Paris puts on an exceptional fireworks display at the Eiffel Tower to celebrate the storming of the Bastille, sometimes called Bastille Day, especially in the U.S., but the French call it the “Fête nationale,” or national festival.

The firework show begins just after dark, but there are all kinds of events and festivities going on around Paris during the day: parades, concerts, and open-air parties and picnics.

The grassy knoll in front of the Eiffel Tower generally fills up with hopeful spectators well before mid-afternoon, but there are plenty of great (and less crowded) places in the city to watch the fireworks from. Some of my personal favorites are the Jardin des Tuileries near the Place de la Concorde, the Avenue de Saxe, l’Esplanade des Invalides, or from Montmartre just in front of the Sacré-Coeur Cathedral.

And if you’re lucky enough to ring in the New Year in Paris, you can expect to see an impressive Eiffel Tower light show then, too.

5 amazing places to see the tower by night

While the Eiffel Tower is visible from most neighborhoods in Paris at night, there are some locations that truly stand out. Here are my top 5 recommendations:

Square Rapp

This beautiful residential square is tucked away right in the middle of the 7th arrondissement and often overlooked by passersby. Boasting an excellent and unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower, this is one spot to go if you’re hoping to take some unique photos of the Iron Lady by night.

Location: The entrance to the Square is located at 37 Avenue Rapp, just between the Post Office and the Luxembourg Embassy.

Wine glasses clinking

This upscale restaurant and bar atop the Musée Quai Branly not only serves up delightful and refined French fare, but offers a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower from most every table. The amazing view, good food, and quiet atmosphere make Les Ombres a lovely option for a romantic evening in Paris.

Location: 27 Quai Branly, 75007 Paris

Arc de Triomphe

Viewfinder of the Arc de Triomphe pointed at the Eiffel Tower

Easily one of Paris’ most famous monuments, the Arc de Triomphe stands at the end of the busy Avenue des Champs-Elysées and offers a 360° view over Paris from its viewing platform. This is really the perfect place to see the Eiffel Tower by night and catch the ambiance of bustling Parisian nightlife.

Location: Place Charles de Gaulle, 75008 Paris

Gare de Lyon sign in Paris

This trendy rooftop bar is perched 60 meters above Paris, just a stone’s throw from the Gare de Lyon train station. Here you can enjoy incredible, unobstructed views of the Eiffel Tower (and the entire city to be honest) from a lounge chair or beanbag, craft cocktail in hand.

Location: 5 Rue Van Gogh, 75012 Paris

Pont de Bir-Hakeim

Pont de Bir-Hakeim in Paris

The Bir-Hakeim bridge traverses the Seine to connect Paris’ 15th and 16th arrondissements. This bridge is famous for its artful steel arches and antique lamps, as well as its appearance in the hit film “Inception.”

But without a doubt, the Pont de Bir-Hakeim is one of the best places in Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. Framed by the classic Parisian architecture and the Seine river, it’s what photo dreams are made of.

Lights out at the Eiffel Tower

When the Eiffel Tower declares “lights out” at 2 a.m. and stops sparkling for the evening, the city breaks into two parts: those who will see what an entire night out in Paris has to offer, and those who will make their way home awaiting a day of exploration come tomorrow.

Going to the top of the Eiffel Tower is a quintessential bucket list item for anyone visiting Paris. However, long lines, crowded observation decks and sold-out tickets can make the excursion seem like more of a chore than the romantic experience it’s made out to be.

Don’t let these things deter you. With a little bit of planning and flexibility, you can have a truly magical trip to the Eiffel Tower summit.

This post will guide you through a perfect visit to the Eiffel Tower. We’ll break down how to get tickets (even if online tickets are sold out), explain the layout of the tower and ensure you know exactly what to expect when you arrive. We’ve filled this post with all of our best tips for reducing wait times, too, so you can have the most enjoyable time with the Iron Lady of Paris.

Let’s get started!

How to Avoid Lines at the Eiffel Tower

Plan your visit, tips for visiting the eiffel tower.

The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris. It was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair. A cool 7 million people visit the Eiffel Tower annually, making it the most visited monument with an entrance fee in the world.

You can go inside the Eiffel Tower and visit three floors open to the public.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

The first floor of the Eiffel Tower sits at 187 feet above ground. On this level you will find quick-service dining, gift shops and spacious, open-air seating with views overlooking Champ de Mars.

Also on the first floor is Madame Brasserie, which opened in June 2022. This restaurant is billed as contemporary cuisine with a rotating, seasonal menu. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

The second floor is the largest observation deck at the Eiffel Tower, showcasing 360-degree views of Paris. The second floor is 377 feet high, which is roughly 34 stories. Central Paris doesn’t have many other skyscrapers, so the views from here are uninterrupted and expansive.

On the second floor, there is a quick-service cafe and bar, macaron shop and gift shop. The Michelin-starred restaurant, Jules Verne, is also located on the second floor. Reservations for the restaurant are required and can be made online up to 90 days in advance.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

The Eiffel Tower reaches 1,083 feet at its tallest point, but the highest publicly accessible floor sits just below that at 906 feet. The observation deck at the top of the Eiffel Tour offers a birds-eye view of the City of Lights.

The top of the Eiffel Tower comprises both indoor and outdoor (fenced-in) observation decks. There’s  a small bar at the top of the Eiffel Tower that sells Champagne, caviar and macarons. Also at the top of the Eiffel Tour is a restored replica of Gustave Eiffel’s office.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

Each of the three public levels at the Eiffel Tower can be accessed by stairs and/or elevators (lifts).

Let’s start with stairs. You can take the stairs between the ground, first and second levels of the Eiffel Tower. You cannot take the stairs all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

From the ground to the first floor is 327 steps, and from the first floor to the second floor is 347 steps. That’s a total of 674 steps from the ground to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. That’s roughly the same as taking the stairs to the 35th floor of a building. It takes about 30 – 45 minutes to climb the stairs to the second floor at the Eiffel Tower.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

If stairs don’t appeal to you, there are two primary elevators that run in both directions between the ground floor and the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. There is a separate, single elevator that runs between the second floor and the summit.

Navigating the first floor via elevator is a bit more complicated. You can only get to the first floor on the elevator by coming down from the second floor. There is not standard elevator access from the ground level to level one or from level one up to level two. If you’re taking the elevator, it’s best to visit the first floor last on your way down.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

It’s also worth noting that the second floor and top floor of the Eiffel Tower actually have two floors each. Even if you take the lift to these floors, there is a single flight of stairs required to access the primary observation deck and amenities on that floor.

Lastly, restaurant patrons at either Madame Brasserie or Jules Verne can take a separate elevator directly to the restaurants. These restaurants have special check-in locations on the ground level at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

How much does it cost to visit the Eiffel Tower?

Tickets to the Eiffel Tower vary in price based on how high you go and how you get up there.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

It costs 26.80€ to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower via the elevator. This requires taking one elevator from the ground floor to the 2nd floor, and then switching to a different elevator from the second floor to the summit.

If you want to visit the summit and save a bit of money, you can select the stairs and elevator option. For 20.40€, you can take the stairs from the base of the Eiffel Tower to the second floor (674 steps), and then take the elevator from the second floor to the summit.

You can save even more money by skipping the summit completely. It costs 17.10€ to visit the second floor of the Eiffel Tower via elevator and only 10,70€ if you take the stairs.

Ticket prices for all levels of the Eiffel Tower include access to that level and all lower levels. There are also reduced ticket prices for children and visitors with disabilities. Do note that individuals with reduced mobility, including wheelchairs, are unable to access to the summit.

How to Purchase Eiffel Tower Tickets

There are two main ways to purchase tickets to go inside the Eiffel Tower.

The first option is to buy Eiffel Tower tickets online in advance. These advance tickets are often called eTickets, priority tickets or skip the line tickets.  Advance tickets for the Eiffel Tower are limited and sell out very quickly, especially tickets for the summit.

If you purchase Eiffel Tower tickets in advance, you will need to select a specific date and time for your visit. Guests with advance eTickets will have access to an expedited security queue and will be able to skip the line at the Eiffel Tower ticket office.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

You can also buy tickets for the Eiffel Tower on the day of your visit from the ticket offices located at the base of the tower. Same-day tickets are for immediate entry and will not have a return time. There are two ticket office locations, one near each of the two entrances.

Please note, same-day Eiffel Tour summit tickets are limited and can sell out midday if capacity is reached.

One final way to get a ticket to the top of the Eiffel Tower is to take a paid tour. Several tour companies, such as Tripadvisor or Viator , offer tours of the Eiffel Tower. These tours are more expensive than the standard ticket pricing, and include added commentary.

If you choose to do a paid tour, do your research first. Not all tours include summit access.

How to Get Advance Tickets to the Eiffel Tower

There are a limited number of advance tickets for the Eiffel Tower available for purchase each day. Each advance ticket is for a specific date and time, which you must select when purchasing the ticket and cannot be modified.

Advance tickets for the Eiffel Tower are released 60 days in advance. Summit tickets can sell out within a few days of being released, and time slots can become limited within hours. Second floor only tickets remain available for purchase much longer.

For the best chance of getting summit tickets and the best selection of entrance times, check for tickets 60 days before your visit. Tickets are usually released around 9 AM Paris local time, so that’s the best time to snag your ideal entrance time.

The price of an advance eTicket to the Eiffel Tower is the same as tickets purchased same-day at the ticket office.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

Skip the Line Tickets for the Eiffel Tower

Advance eTickets for the Eiffel Tower are sometimes called “skip the line” tickets, but that’s not exactly accurate. There are no true “skip the line” tickets for the Eiffel Tower, just “skip some of the lines” tickets.

Guests with advance eTickets can go through expedited security and skip the queue at the ticket office. However, all guests regardless of ticket type, will have to wait in the same queue for the elevator to the summit and back.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

Summit elevator queues at 11:20 AM on a June Monday morning

For that reason, we suggest selecting an early morning time for your advance eTicket if possible. While advance tickets will save you time getting to the second floor, you’ll have to wait in lines for all subsequent elevators just like everyone else. These lines will be shortest early in the day.

If you want to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night, try selecting a time after 8 PM for the shortest evening lines.

Pros & Cons of Advance eTickets to the Eiffel Tower

Advance eTickets for the Eiffel Tower are appealing for two reasons: they guarantee entry and eliminate wait times at the ticket office. This is important because day-off tickets to the summit of the Eiffel Tower can sell out midday if they hit capacity.

For guests who want to visit the Eiffel Tower in the evening, advance tickets make this experience substantially more pleasant. There is no stress of summit tickets selling our or multi-hour queues at the ticket office.

The down side to advance tickets, though, is that it illuminates flexibility. Advance eTickets for the Eiffel Tower are for a specific date and time. If there are changes to your travel plans or the weather doesn’t cooperate, you’re out of luck.

All this to say, advance eTickets are overall good to have, but don’t panic if you can’t get them.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

If you want to avoid long queues at the Eiffel Tower, the answer might surprise you. The trick isn’t getting advance eTickets; it’s simply arriving early.

While an advance eTicket will reduce wait times at security and the ticket office, arriving early is the best way to reduce wait times at all elevator queues. How early you need to arrive at the Eiffel Tower will vary based on when you visit.

If you’re visiting the Eiffel Tower on a weekday, we suggest arriving at the scheduled open time (typically 9 AM). If your schedule in Paris requires a weekend visit to the Eiffel Tower, it’s best to arrive 30-60 minutes before it opens.

Eiffel Tower Ticket Office queue at 1 PM on a Monday in June

The Eiffel Tower is the most crowded during the summer months of June, July and August. During these months, expect wait times to get longer, faster. Even if you arrive early and get to the summit quickly, you may still experience waits for descending elevators. The waits will still be shorter earlier in the day than later.

Weather can also impact wait times. If the weather is less than ideal, you can comfortably plan to arrive within the first hour of opening and still experience minimal waits. (NOTE: The tower doesn’t typically close for poor weather, but extreme weather can cause disruptions and occasional closures.)

In our personal experience, we arrived one hour after open on a cloudy Monday in June and barely waited in any lines. However, by the time we were leaving, lines for the elevator to the summit were already quite long.

The official Eiffel Tower website has great crowd information which can help you plan for and avoid busy times. There’s also a handy live crowded tracker on their homepage .

As your Paris travel plans begin to take shape, start thinking about how your visit to the Eiffel Tower will fit into your itinerary.

In this section, we’ll breeze through some planning questions to help you pick the best month, day and time to visit the Eiffel Tower.

When is the Eiffel Tour Open?

The Eiffel Tower is open every day of the year except one — the Eiffel Tower is closed on Bastille Day on July 14. Unlike most museums in Paris that close on Tuesdays, the Eiffel Tower is open every day of the week.

On most days of the year, the Eiffel Tower opens at 9 AM. During parts of May and June it opens at 9:30 AM, so be sure to check the official hours before your visit.

What’s the best time to visit the Eiffel Tour?

The summer months and weekends are the most popular times at the Eiffel Tower. According to their website , the Eiffel Tower is the busiest from late June through early September. It’s more crowded on weekends versus weekdays, and it reaches its peak daily crowds between 11 AM – 5 PM.

If you’re looking to avoid some of the peak crowds, try targeting shoulder season in April/May and September/October. You do face a greater chance of poor weather during the spring and fall months, though. Be sure to set your expectations accordingly.

When considering specific days, we suggest visiting the Eiffel Tower on a Tuesday if possible. Most other museums are closed on Tuesdays, so it’s a great way to fill an otherwise quiet tourism day in the city. It’s also one of the least crowded days at the Eiffel Tower.

I personally believe that nothing beats Paris in the Fall. The weather is crisp, the foliage is delightful, and the fashion is on point. I would suggest visiting the Eiffel Tower on a Tuesday morning in early October for the ideal visit.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

Should you go to the Eiffel Tower during the day or at night?

Day and night at the Eiffel Tower are two completely different experiences. Daytime at the Eiffel Tower will offer the clearest views of the city, but they don’t call Paris the City of Lights for nothing. The evening view from the top of the Eiffel Tower can be spectacular, too.

Personally, we would recommend daytime at the Eiffel Tower. Specifically, we recommend visiting in the early morning. The daylight allows you to find Paris landmarks around the city and appreciate the pops of color from the parks around town.

Of course the Eiffel Tower at night is magical, too. From sundown till 1 AM, the Eiffel Tower lights up with a sparkling light show. The best way to appreciate the glistening Eiffel Tower at night, though, is from the ground, not inside the tower.

If you want to see the Eiffel Tower at night, we suggest finding a spot at Trocadero Gardens at dusk. It has the best view of the tower and is the perfect place to relax after a long day in Paris.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

How long does it take to visit the Eiffel Tower?

Depending on when you visit and how high up you go, a trip to the Eiffel Tower can take anywhere from 2 – 4 hours.

We suggest spending 30-60 minutes at the summit and another 30 minutes each on the second and first floors. If you’re planning on dining, we suggest eating on the first floor for the shortest waits. Lunch can take another 30-60 minutes.

In a perfect world, we’d spend two hours at the Eiffel Tower, but that does not account for wait times. Buffer in an extra 1-2 hours for queues at the ticket office and elevators.

To be safe, we would recommend blocking off 4-5 hours in your day for a leisurely visit to the Eiffel Tower. It might not take that long, but you don’t want to be rushing through it.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

  • Visit the Eiffel Tower from top to bottom . If you have a summit ticket, start by going all the way to the top and working your way down. This will help ensure you have the shortest waits and least crowded experience on each floor. It’s also the easiest way to access all of the floors via elevator.
  • Take the stairs down from the second floor . The lines to take the elevator down can be long, but the waits for the stairs are usually low or non-existent. Even if you have an elevator ticket, you’re still allowed to take the stairs down if you choose. If you’re able to take the stairs, it’s a great way to cut out a few lines.
  • Buy souvenirs and food on the first floor . There are souvenir shops on the first and second levels, and a coin press at the summit. The store on the first floor is the least crowded and has mostly the same items available as the upper floors, even the summit souvenir coin. Cafe lines are also much shorter on the first floor and the options are similar.
  • Take advantage of imperfect weather. Don’t be deterred if it’s a little cloudy on the day you visit the Eiffel Tower. In fact, it will keep crowds down and might actually be better! We visited on a cloudy day and the views were still incredible.
  • Buy your tickets from the ticket office near Entrance 2 . There are two entrances at the Eiffel Tower, each with a ticket office nearby. The ticket office near Entrance 1 (south pillar) is more crowded, because that’s the more popular entrance. Head to the ticket office near the eastern pillar by Entrance 2 for a shorter line.

Closing Thoughts

I’m not going to lie, I was not excited about visiting the Eiffel Tower. Reports of huge crowds and long lines made it sound awful. I also like my views of Paris to include the Eiffel Tower, which I wasn’t going to get from the Eiffel Tower.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by my Eiffel Tower experience. With an early arrival and weekday visit, the crowds were very low. This made the our visit low stress and super easy.

The open air observation deck at the summit feels like you’re at the top of the world. I’ve been to the top of a lot of tall buildings, but nothing quite compares to standing on that tiny observation deck at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

visit eiffel tower at night or day

While I didn’t expect to love a Paris view without the Eiffel Tower in it, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed. The sweeping views highlight the sheer size of the city of Paris and it’s fun to hunt down all the other icons.

The view from the second floor was way better than I expected, too. Some things (like Montmartre) were even more impressive from the second floor than from the top.

It was a real bucket-list moment that I didn’t expect to love, but did. I definitely don’t think I’d have loved it as much if I had to wait in line for 3 hours, though.

At the end of the day, I would say that a visit to the Eiffel Tower is absolutely worth it. It’s definitely something worth doing once in a lifetime in the City of Lights. I’m not sure I’ll do it again, but I’m glad I did it once.

Want even more great views of Paris, including a great view of the Eiffel Tower herself? Consider a visit to the top of Montparnasse Tower , too!

Visiting the Eiffel Tower at night : a magical spectacle

If you have the opportunity, don't miss this surprising experience of going up the Eiffel Tower at night. Whether or not it's your first time, it's always enchanting and you see the City of Lights with fresh eyes. Seeing the lit-up tower from the base is already a show in itself, but nothing compares to the sensation of looking down over the whole city from atop the Iron Lady in her twinkling mantle.

The Eiffel Tower's dramatic night lighting

Lit by more than 300 spotlights arranged along its girders, the tower takes on a gold sheen as soon as night falls. Cones of light highlight the structure and reveal it in a new light, both from the bottom and from the second level, where the tower's curved silhouette serves up an unbeatable view. Visiting the Eiffel Tower at night also allows you to observe the movements of the light beam emitted by the beacon at the top of the tower. Its 50-mile range illuminates the clouds and the city in its hypnotic sweep.

Visitors are treated to a surprise at the top of each hour: 20,000 bulbs twinkle and light up the tower in a spectacular choreography. The installation was designed to commemorate the new year in 2000, but was made permanent at the behest of Parisians who had fallen for this extra touch of magic.

More ephemeral light displays also embellish the Iron Lady form time to time, for celebrations or commemorations such as the Rugby World Cup, Chinese New Year or, more recently, to pay respects to the victims of the November 2015 attacks. On these occasions, the tower is transformed into a powerful symbol of national unity, rallying Parisians behind the colors of its display.

An unbeatable view of the City of Lights

Ascending the monument as night falls also means you can watch the sun set over the city as the lights gradually flicker on. This romantic, magical moment will appeal to lovers, photography lovers and anyone looking to see the capital from a new perspective. Paris's other illuminated monuments can be seen from the top: the Arc de Triomphe, Opéra Garnier, the Louvre, Notre Dame de Paris and many others. In December, the city's Christmas lights enhance the display and light up the Christmas markets and major thoroughfares like the Champs Elysées.

Night visits in summer and winter

You can visit the Eiffel Tower by night any time of year. Imagine the surreal beauty of the roofs of Paris coated with a fine dusting of snow that glistens under the moonlight, or the languorous spectacle of the capital on a cool summer night.

Unless weather conditions or special safety considerations prevent it, you can visit the tower up to midnight from mid-June to early September and up to 11:00 pm the rest of the year. The hours of operation are also extended to midnight during Easter weekend and spring break. With a nighttime visit to the Eiffel Tower, the City of Lights has never been so deserving of its name!

WE prefer it at night but YMMV. Be sure you walk across to Trocadero before or after for the spectacular night views. We did it last year on Oct 5 with tickets ahead and it poured rain and was a bit foggy -- we went anyway because we had the tickets -- it was beautiful. You can see snapshots to get an idea in my photo journal. I think it is just prettier at night. By getting tickets ahead you do run the weather risk -- but we still enjoyed it.

We went about an hour before dusk so had day and night views. It was perfect. In Dec not as crowded so might want to wait for day of tickets? Just a thought.

Enjoy your trip

Thanks everyone for your very helpful input. We have opted for tickets at 1.30pm so we have plenty of time in the morning and also plenty of time to get back before pre-dinner drinks for my celebration birthday meal. We shall definitely look into going up the Montparnesse tower as well.

Best Time to Visit Eiffel Tower

February 13, 2024

Best time to visit Eiffel Tower

The best time to visit Eiffel Tower is early in the morning as soon as it opens at 9.15 am.

However, pinpointing the perfect time to visit this iconic structure requires more than just an early start.

Various factors, including the tower’s attendance patterns, seasonal variations, and crowd dynamics, play a crucial role in planning your visit.

This guide aims to provide you with all the necessary information to choose the best time for your Eiffel Tower adventure, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Best time to visit Eiffel Tower based on Crowd

best time to visit eiffel tower on bases of crowd

The very first thing every visitor should consider when deciding the ideal time to visit this Parisian attraction is the crowd level.

The Eiffel Tower attracts more than 7 million visitors throughout the year, and finding just the right time to avoid such a massive crowd requires some information and planning.

Let’s understand the crown pattern at the Eiffel Tower throughout the year to find an optimal time to plan a trip to the Eiffel Tower.

Attendance/Crowd Throughout the Year

best time of the day to visit eiffel tower

Low Season: January, February, November, and October see the lowest number of visitors. This is an ideal time for those looking to avoid crowds.

Medium Attendance: March, April, May, September, and December experience medium attendance levels, offering a balance between crowd size and weather.

High Season: June begins the high-attendance season, which peaks in July and August, known as the peak season.

To better understand the expected crowd levels at the Eiffel Tower throughout the year, refer to the table below.

Attendance/Crowd Throughout the Day

Best time of the week to visit Eiffel Tower

Morning (9 am – 11 am): Generally low, but increases to high during peak season. Midday to Afternoon (11 am – 5 pm): Always high, reaching maximum levels during peak season. Evening (5 pm – 8 pm): Medium attendance, which can peak during high season. Late Evening (8 pm – 10.30 pm): Typically low, with spikes during peak season.

To better understand the expected crowd levels at the Eiffel Tower throughout the day, refer to the table below.

Attendance/Crowd Throughout the Week:

Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days of the week at the Eiffel Tower.

Conversely, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays usually see the lowest attendance, making them ideal for visits, especially since the Eiffel Tower is open on Tuesdays, unlike many Paris museums.

To better understand the expected crowd levels at the Eiffel Tower throughout the week, refer to the table below.

Peak Season and Holidays

The end of June to the beginning of September marks the peak season.

Additionally, European school vacations can cause a surge in attendance, particularly:

  • July 8 to September 4
  • October 21 to November 6
  • December 23 to January 8

Holidays creating long weekends, such as the Assumption (August 15-19), Thanksgiving (November 18 – 1 December), and the Immaculate Conception (December 8-10), may also see higher attendance.

Best Time to Visit the Eiffel Tower Based on Weather

best weather to visit eiffel tower

When planning a visit to the iconic Eiffel Tower, the weather in Paris is a crucial factor to consider.

The city’s varying climatic conditions throughout the year can significantly influence your experience at this world-renowned monument.

While the allure of the Eiffel Tower remains constant, regardless of the season, the extremes of summer and winter pose distinct challenges for visitors.

  • Summer in Paris can be particularly challenging for those wishing to explore the Eiffel Tower. High temperatures can make waiting in line and climbing stairs a less than comfortable experience. The heat, combined with the high number of visitors, can detract from the enjoyment of your visit.
  • Winter , on the other hand, brings its own set of challenges. Paris can be quite cold during these months, and the chilly winds can make waiting outdoors and enjoying the tower’s open-air platforms less appealing. The cold can be particularly biting at higher elevations like the tower’s summit , making adequate preparation essential for those brave enough to face the winter weather.
  • Spring and Autumn emerge as the most favorable seasons to visit the Eiffel Tower. During these months, Paris enjoys a mild and pleasant climate devoid of the extreme temperatures found in summer and winter. The gentler weather facilitates more comfortable exploration of the tower, from its base to its summit. Waiting in lines is less daunting, and the climb, whether by stairs or elevator, is a more enjoyable experience. Additionally, these seasons often offer the added benefit of fewer tourists, making for a less crowded and more intimate encounter with the tower.

In short, if weather is a major consideration for your trip, planning your visit to the Eiffel Tower during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) provides the best conditions.

These seasons combine the beauty of Paris with climatic comfort, ensuring your visit to the Eiffel Tower is as enjoyable as it is memorable.

Tips for a Smooth Eiffel Tower Visiting Experience

  • Avoid Long Lines: Purchasing Eiffel Tower tickets online in advance saves you time and guarantees access, especially useful for those aiming for the summit, as the tickets to the Summit get sold out quickly.
  • Arrival Time: For ticket holders, arriving 15-20 minutes before your scheduled time is advisable, particularly for summit access, due to potential waits for elevators on the 2nd floor.
  • Early Visits: To avoid and minimize the potential waits at the tower’s elevator lines and entrance, aim to arrive at the tower’s opening hours at 9.15 am .

Determining the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower involves balancing crowd levels, weather conditions, and your personal schedule.

How to Visit the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most iconic monuments in Paris and the world. We tell you everything you need to know to make the most of your visit and get tickets for the date of your trip.

Visiting Tips

Before visiting the Eiffel Tower, it is important to remember some tips to get tickets for your travel dates, avoid queues, save time, and make the most of the experience.

A good idea is to plan your visit in advance, book your tickets , and choose the most convenient time for you. You can also opt for a guided tour to learn more about the history and structure of the tower.

If you are traveling with children, keep in mind that the Eiffel Tower has play areas and activities specially designed for them. It is also important to take safety measures into account, such as not climbing with dangerous objects or not running up stairs or elevators.

Visiting Hours of the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower seen from up close

Visiting hours change depending on the season and day of the week. It is best to check the schedule when you book your tickets.

  • From mid-June to early September: 9 a.m. to midnight.
  • The rest of the year, from 9.30 a.m. to 11 p.m., with extended hours until midnight on weekends.

Ticket Reservation and Pricing

To visit the Eiffel Tower, it is necessary to book your tickets in advance. You can do this through the official website or other authorized booking websites .

You can buy tickets for the second floor or the top of the tower. Also, you can include guided tours, skip-the-line access, and combined activities, such as the Eiffel Tower climb and the Seine River cruise.

Ticket prices vary according to the season and the type of visit you choose. It is advisable to book in advance to ensure availability and avoid unnecessary queues.

Here are my updated recommendations since I visited the Tower last July. To get the tickets, I spent at least 2 months looking at the official website until there was a free slot for the date I needed.

My brother was visiting us, so I had one or two specific days to go up.

I searched on the official website until I almost gave up, but I had Civitatis as a backup, as they are more expensive, but you can find more availability of schedules. The good thing is that on this website, I could cancel if we couldn’t go for any reason. On the official website, they are non-refundable.

Ticket prices vary from the official website to other booking websites, but they also vary depending on how far you want to go up and if you go up by stairs or elevator.

  • The general price per adult to the top by elevator is 28,30€ today; you know that the price can vary every year.
  • If you go up to the second floor by elevator, the price is 18,10€ per adult.
  • If you go up to the second floor by the stairs, the price is 11,30€ per adult.

In either case, you can buy the entrance to the second floor once at the Eiffel Tower; you can buy access to the top only if capacity is available.

In the table below, you can see the different prices and reduced rates. I recommend that if you really want to climb the tower, book in advance, and if the first time there is no availability for the date you are interested in, check again a few days later ; if there are still no tickets available, have a look here .

Eiffel Tower table of prices of the different tickets to climb the tower

I know the price difference can be significant, but unless you live here, how many times will you have the opportunity to climb the Eiffel Tower? This is the question I ask myself in similar situations.

Tours, Guided Tour, or Free Audioguide

You can visit the Eiffel Tower with a guided visit as part of a tour or with the free audio guide on your smartphone.

Free audio guide

Macarons toast on Eiffel Tower

The audio guide can be downloaded with a QR code on the tower itself. And you can make the visit following its indications. Start first with the east and west gardens, then the esplanade, and then the different floors.

You can start at the top and then go down (note that the first elevator takes you to the second floor and then you have to change elevators) or you can start with the first one, then the second one, and finally the top.

In my case, I prefer to start at the top and then work my way down, we always end up eating a macaron on the second floor and enjoying a coffee with a view.

Accessibility For People With Reduced Mobility

The Eiffel Tower is accessible to people with reduced mobility. It is possible to visit the first and second floors in wheelchairs, but not the top, since for security reasons, access is not possible.

There are also adapted restrooms and wheelchairs available for loan in the tower lobby.

If you need special assistance, you can contact the Eiffel Tower staff in advance to help you with anything you may need during your visit.

How to Get to the Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower from Trocadero

You can get to the Eiffel Tower using different public transport, the most comfortable for me is the metro, but here are all the available options.

  • The best metro stop is Trocadero ; you get off here and start your way with the best views of the Eiffel Tower. This is totally subjective, but I think it is the best way to get to the Eiffel Tower for the first time.

It is metro line 9 and the Trocadéro stop.

  • Nearest stop: Bir-Hakeim . This is another recommended stop, the views from the metro are tremendous and you can easily reach the tower, but I still prefer Trocadéro. After your visit, tell me which stop you chose!

It is metro line 6 and the stop is Bir-Hakeim.

  • Other nearby stops: Metro line 8, Ecole Militaire stop.

Bir-Hakeim Bridge

The History Of The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous monuments in the world. If you are planning to visit, it is important to know its history.

Built for the Universal Exposition of 1889, the Eiffel Tower symbolizes the city of Paris and is a marvel of engineering.

Designed by engineers Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and Maurice Koechlin, the Eiffel Tower was built in only two years and remained the tallest structure in the world until the construction of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930.

Although there was controversy at the time over the tower’s construction, today, it is an iconic landmark and a must-see for anyone visiting Paris.

The Creation Of The Tower

The Eiffel Tower was built by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel’s company for the Universal Exposition of 1889, which was held in Paris. The goal was to create an impressive structure that would symbolize the technological advancement of the time.

The tower’s design was the work of Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, two engineers working for Eiffel’s company. The project was approved and presented to the French Society of Civil Engineers.

Construction of the tower began in 1887 and was completed in two years, two months, and five days.

How High is the Eiffel Tower

The tower structure is composed of four iron pillars that meet at the top. In total, the tower is 324 meters high, including the antenna.

How Many Steps Does the Eiffel Tower Have?

Stairs of the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower has about 1665 steps, keep this in mind if you are thinking of climbing the Tower by stairs. My recommendation is to take the elevator up and the stairs down.

How Many Floors Does the Eiffel Tower Have?

The Eiffel Tower has 3 levels that we can visit, the first at 57 meters, the second at 115 meters; these two levels can be climbed by stairs or elevator, and the third level, at 276 meters, you must climb by elevator.

The Tower Controversy

Although the Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris today, not everyone agrees with its construction. Many Parisians considered the tower to be an eyesore and a blight on the cityscape.

In fact, more than 300 artists and writers signed a petition against the tower, which was published in the newspaper Le Temps in 1887. The petition said the tower was “useless and monstrous” and should be destroyed after the exhibition.

Fortunately, the tower was not destroyed, and today it is one of the most visited monuments in the world. Can you imagine going to Paris and the Eiffel Tower not being there?

Hacks Every Tourist Should Know When Visiting the Eiffel Tower

View on Eiffel Tower, Paris, France.

Haters will tell you to skip the Eiffel Tower altogether: the lines are too long, the area’s a tourist trap , it has nothing to do with the real Paris, they’ll tell you. But the seven million people who pay to ascend its 324 meters every year aren’t all travel dunces, carried along by the crowd and clichés. There are ways to organize your visit and make the most of this iconic monument.

Did you know you can now travel with Culture Trip? Book now and join one of our premium small-group tours to discover the world like never before.

Buy tickets online

The Eiffel Tower

If you know that you will visit Paris, you can buy tickets on the Eiffel Tower website up to two months in advance. In doing so, you commit to a specific date and time – so if the weather that day turns out to be miserable, there’s no way of switching up your plans – but you’ll gain access to the much shorter ‘Visitor with Tickets’ line. Be aware that if you’re more than 30 minutes late, you may be denied entry. Taking the elevator ticket costs €11 to the 2nd floor and €17 to the top.

The capital’s tourism office has devised the Paris Passlib’ to help tourists – adults, young people, and children – plan their trip and minimize their expense. The adult packages start at €40 for one day and go up to €155 for five days. The former includes a one-hour cruise on the Seine and a one-day bus tour around the city. For an additional €15, you can add a fast-track ticket to the 2nd floor of the Eiffel Tower to any of the packages.

Go up with a tour guide

Private tour operators are often a good way of streamlining holiday plans and there are certainly a few that offer queue-jumping tickets for the Eiffel Tower. The ‘Skip the Line’ tour by Fat Tire Tours will let you take in all three levels without waiting for hours at the base and the ‘Guided Eiffel Tower Tour’ by City Wonders gets you straight to the front of the line with a local expert. You can also find excellent deals on Viator .

Visit during off-peak times and seasons

Paris, France

As with all of Paris’ attractions , the earlier you can get to the Eiffel Tower, the better. (Obviously, this is easier said than done if the French wine’s been flowing the night before.) The city’s most famous landmark is also highly susceptible to seasonal increases in popularity. The busiest time of year is from mid-July to late-August and the quietest times are weekdays during the winter. Check out the guide of peak and off-peak periods to see when your visit falls.

Make a restaurant reservation

Making a reservation at one of the Eiffel Tower’s two restaurants will also allow you to skip the line as both have a separate entrance. You can either go informal on the 1st floor with 58 Tour Eiffel , where a chic picnic will cost you €42.50; or opt for a fine dining experience on the 2nd level with Le Jules Verne , where you can enjoy a three-course lunch menu for €105 and a five- or six-course dinner menu for €190 or €230.

Take the stairs

Even if you purchase your tickets in advance, waiting in line for a little while for the elevators is inevitable. Opting for the €7 stair ticket , on the other hand, is a surprisingly unused option and you’ll never normally wait more than a few minutes. The 704 steps take you to the 2nd floor, where you can catch the elevator to the top. In any event, consider walking down for the chance to enjoy some peace and quiet and unique views.

Check the weather

A view of the Eiffel Tower from the street

There isn’t actually the best time to visit Paris because it is beautiful all seasons long, but it’s a good idea to check the weather conditions. Low cloud cover and fog can completely obscure the Eiffel Tower and the great views people wait so long to see. If you haven’t bought tickets online, keep an eye on the weather forecast to see which day would be best to make the ascent. If there isn’t much wiggle room in your plans, don’t worry: the sun usually burns up most of the moisture by mid-morning. If it clears, you can buy a ticket to the top on the 2nd floor.

Download the app

The Eiffel Tower app now allows you to be your own tour guide during your visit. It features an hour-long audio tour made up of thirty themed chapters, covering every aspect of the tower’s history with the help of unseen period documents. The Android- and Apple-friendly app will also help you identify 70 famous surrounding buildings, like the Grand Palais, Sacré-Coeur, and Champs-Elysées, using high-definition panoramas.

Expect lines going down

Skipping the line on the way up is a great time saver but, unfortunately, there’s no avoiding the wait for an elevator on the way down. There’s only one line on each floor and the longest wait by far is on the top floor. You can, of course, take the stairs down from the 2nd or 1st floor without any time lost. As you can’t re-enter once you’ve left, just relax and make the most of your time up there.

Pick metro stops for photo ops

The two best stations to arrive at for a pre-ascent photo (or selfie) are Trocadéro and Bir-Hakeim . The former is by far the most popular and arriving any later than 9AM during the summer means large crowds of tourists and salesmen hocking cheap souvenirs. The latter, which is at the bridge made famous by movies like Last Tango in Paris and Inception , offers stunning views over the Seine. If you aren’t interested in photos, the nearest station is Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel .

Pay the tower two visits

If you are first time in Paris, whether you go up the Eiffel Tower during the day or at night, you should make the trip to see it at both times of day. The evening light show sees the tower lit up by 20,000 bulbs. It starts at dusk and lasts for five minutes every hour on the hour until 1am and 2am in the summer.

Buying the Tower tickets from the venue is a bad idea because of the long lines (pic below) at the ticket counter.

Eiffel Tower tickets line

That’s why it is better to buy your night visit tickets online.

Also, online ticket prices tend to be cheaper than tickets at the attraction.

Booking online also helps you get exclusive discounts and offers.

When you buy online, you can avoid the long queues at the ticket counters.

The tickets for the attraction get sold out quickly, so booking early helps avoid last-minute disappointments.

When you book Eiffel Tower tickets , you must select a time slot for your visit.

On the day of your visit, you must arrive at the attraction 30 minutes before the time on your ticket.

There is no separate ticket for night visits – you can choose a suitable evening slot.

Since the Tower is the most visited, ticketed monument globally, it is challenging to get tickets for your preferred times and dates, especially at short notice.

That’s why we have given below links to three popular platforms selling Eiffel Tower tickets.

During your holiday in Paris, there are many ways to experience the Eiffel Tower at night.

You can combine your Eiffel experience with many of the other things to do in Paris as well.

Eiffel Tower & Illuminations Cruise

The Eiffel Tower is the most visited paid tourist attraction in the world, and a direct access ticket saves you a lot of waiting time.

Boats depart from a pier just 5 minutes walk from the Tower and run every hour in winter and every 30 minutes in summer.

Kids aged 3 and below do not require an entry ticket.

Ticket Cost (4+ years):  €115

Eiffel Tower, River Cruise and Bus Tour

This is a perfect tour for romantic couples or proposals.

As the limousine winds through the streets of Paris, you take in the sights and also relax with some champagne.

Towards the end of your ride, the car slows down near the Tower, and a message from you gets displayed on the ultra-bright screen inside the limousine.

The message coincides with the exact moment when the Eiffel Tour is sparkling with its illuminations – making it super special.

Climbing the stairs when the iron structure is lit up from the inside is a unique experience.

If you can’t take the stairs, don’t worry—the Tower elevators are just as much fun.

Small buffet outlets are located on the esplanade, first, and second floors of the Eiffel Tower, where the whole family can enjoy a meal.

If you prefer a fancy dinner at the Tower, check out the one-MICHELIN-starred restaurant Jules Verne.

Perched 125 meters (410 feet) above the ground, the restaurant offers scintillating views of the City of Lights.

A ticket to the Eiffel Tower doesn’t guarantee entry into the Jules Verne restaurant, and you must  book a table  in advance.

Once you have explored the second floor, you can try a flute of champagne at the Champagne Bar on the Summit (the third floor).

Find out everything about Eiffel Tower restaurants before booking your dinner at the Parisian Monument.

Eiffel Tower lights

Eiffel Tower’s night lights and light show have a long history.

Even before electricity, the Iron Lady was lit up by gas.

The illuminations on the Tower solve two purposes –

  • It helps in safely operating the tourist attraction at night (it is open till beyond midnight)
  • The lights and light show end up being yet another reason for tourists to visit at night

The first projectors were installed on the Iron Lady on 31 December 1985, and they were an instant success.

Around 330+ yellow-orange, powerful spotlights are integrated into the iron structure, outlining the Eiffel Tower’s frame.

The Tower lights and sparkles don’t have a specific starting time – they get triggered automatically by nightfall sensors.

Once triggered, the Golden lights stay on till 1 am.

The sparkling lights are superimposed over the golden lights for 5 minutes at the beginning of each hour till 1 am.

Watch this video to see how the sparkling happens on top of the Golden lights –

The last sparkling light show happens at 1 am, without the Golden lights in the background. It lasts for 10 minutes.

Here is a video of the Eiffel Tower’s 1 am sparkling show –

As part of the  1889 Paris Exposition  itself, Gustave Eiffel installed spotlights to illuminate the Parisian monuments.

By 1947, the spotlights had become better many times over and were being used for air navigation.

The current Eiffel Tower beacon was inaugurated in the year 2000 and is mostly symbolic.

The beacon comprises four motorized spotlights that create two beams with a range of 80 km (50 miles).

Most tourists would have heard that there is an Eiffel Tower night law.

Or that photography of the Tower at night is illegal.

The answer is both yes and no.

Let’s share some background before we answer whether taking photos of the Tower at night is illegal or not.

Pierre Bideau installed the Tower lights in 1985, and he still owns the copyright on the lights and the sparkling.

According to European Union law, the copyright stays for 70 years after the death of the creator.

That’s why Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), which manages the Eiffel Tower, still maintains that the various illuminations are protected and hence require prior authorization .

So technically, it is illegal to take pictures of the Tower after the lights come on.

However, no tourist who has taken pictures for personal use or sharing on social media has been convicted till now.

And thousands of tourists continue to break this rule every day.

Best places to see Eiffel Tower at night

  • Radisson Blu Le Metropolitan Hotel
  • Plaza Athenee Hotel
  • Duquesne Eiffel Hotel
  • Hotel La Comtesse Paris

The other exciting places to see the Eiffel Tower with all its lights on at night are:

A dinner cruise on the river Seine is a perfect way to see the Tower after it is all decked up with its shimmering lights.

Dinner Cruises happen on the Restaurant boats, which have a glass-enclosed dining area so that you can enjoy the Parisian views from a protected environment.

In addition to the Eiffel Tower, you will see other Parisian monuments, such as The Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, Les Invalides, and the Orsay Museum.

Eiffel Tower from Trocadero Gardens

Trocadéro Gardens is right opposite the Eiffel Tower, on the other bank of the river Seine, and thus is a perfect spot to see the massive monument all lit up.

Trocadero is free and always open. Couples are known to enjoy this spot.

Pont de Bir-Hakeim connects the 15th and 16th arrondissements.

This famous bridge is a popular spot for photographers trying to snap pictures of the Tower in the backdrop of the River Seine.

Champ-de-Mars is perhaps the best place to appreciate stunning views of the Tower at night.

You can bring in your blankets, pack in some food, and dine in the massive public greenspace.

Montparnasse Tower ’s 56th-floor Observatory offers you a panoramic view of Paris and its monuments, including the Eiffel Tower.

The Parisian Observatory remains open till 10.30 pm on all days of the week.  Book Montparnasse Tower tickets !

If you fancy a dinner, step into le Ciel de Paris, the Observatory’s highly recommended restaurant.

Quai Branly Museum also offers excellent views of the Tower, but since it closes by 7 pm, it is not a good option for night views.

However, the Museum’s rooftop restaurant, Les Ombres , is open until 10.30 pm and offers brilliant views of the monument.

Sacré Coeur Basilica is on top of Montmartre Hill and is open from 6 am to 10.30 pm.

If you visit the Basilica in the evening, you can stay on to see breathtaking views of both the Eiffel Tower and the Parisian capital city.

Be it day or night, the City of Lights looks stunning from above the Eiffel Tower.

The best time to visit the Eiffel Tower is Sunset

Sunsetting on the eiffel tower. Across the river Seine with orange and yellow sky. Statues in the front.

Imagine arriving at the top of the Eiffel tower just as the sun starts to dip below the horizon. The sky lights up Paris with bright pinks and reds. Making the best time to ascend the Eiffel Tower is shortly before twilight. This is the best time because you will get to experience the tower by day, at sunset, and then at night. When the tower lights up the 20,000 light bulbs sparkling at the top while your standing on the top decks makes your visit to the Eiffel Tower a once in a lifetime experience full of memories.

To spike your interest even more, make sure to discover the Eiffel Tower through these great books on Amazon before you go!

Our first experience discovering the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower

My husband and I along with our young daughter had been living in France for about a year. We had been to the Eiffel Tower a number of times. It wasn’t until our sister and brother-in-law came for a visit that we learned just how spectacular the Eiffel tower can be. We talked with lots of locals and all of them agreed, the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower is at sunset.

We booked our tickets in advance for all of us when they would be in Paris. Then we arrive shortly before dusk and I remember my sister-in-law walking across the Trocadero just in awe of the tower. Even though it was still day and the lights on the tower had not turned on, it was still spectacular. We took our tickets and headed to the lift. Make sure to leave time before you head up to take photos. This way you can experience the tower before heading to jump in line.

~Pro-tip: Always book your Eiffel Tower tickets in advance online. You will save so much time!

Sunset over Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. The sky of Red and Orange with the streets of Paris

We took our Eiffel Tower tickets we booked in advance and walked past all those waiting to still get in and were promptly put in line for security and then the next available lift. As we ascended to the top we could see the sun beginning to set. We wondered if we were too late, but as we continued to climb we knew we would make it.

As the elevator doors of the Eiffel Tower open we quickly made our way out on to the top deck and found a place to watch the sun go down. The rooftops of Paris lit up and the sky gave way to stunning reds and orange colors.

The Eiffel Tower at night

The eiffel tower at night in 2010.

Every evening the lights turn on the tower and the twinkling lights sparkle. It appears that you can almost see the Eiffel Tower from almost all parts of Paris. The beacon lights up at the top. Sending out two light beams that reach up to 80 Kilometers covering the Paris metro area. The Eiffel Tower does stand as a beacon and one of the main symbols of Paris.

What time do the lights sparkle on the Eiffel Tower?

The twinkling lights on the Eiffel Tower appear on the hour every hour. They last for 5 minutes. You will not want to miss the twinkling of the lights. They sparkle on the hour every hour starting at nightfall until 1:00 am. (If nightfall is at 6:30 pm, they will start sparkling at 7:00 pm).

Lighting the Eiffel tower has been apart of its existence throughout the years. In 1889 on the opening of the Tower, 10,000 gas lamps accented the tower along with the steeple and the platforms.

Sparkling lights on the Eiffel tower. Dark sky with bright lights. What time do the sparkling lights go off on the eiffel tower

In 1925, decorative and colored lighting was displayed. This lasted for 11 years. In 1978, the tower was lit up like a Christmas tree. Decorated with 30,000 lamps. Then on New Years’ Eve 1999 before 2000 the 20,000 sparkling lights display was added. It was only planned to stay until Bastille Day, July 14th, 2001. When the sparkling lights were removed for a short time, many people complained. So they were brought back by popular demand.

Now the Eiffel Tower has many light displays depending on the time of year and what is happening in France and around the world. Even if you are not there for a rare light display the sparkling lights on the Eiffel Tower are enjoyable and part of the appeal and excitement of standing out looking over Paris and seeing the twinkling light.

Eiffel Tower Tickets – Book Tickets in Advance

If you don’t book tickets in advance and just show up you could waste lots of time standing in line. Additionally, if you want to see the sunset at the top of the tower timing is everything. You will want to book your tickets and reservation time online. You can book up to 60 days before your visit.

~Pro-tip: Due to heightened security in recent years, you can not even stand under the Eiffel Tower without a ticket. So if you’re looking for an awesome Instagram shot under the Eiffel Tower, get your tickets in advance.

Check the sunset for the time of year you will be traveling. You can actually pick the exact time that the sun will be setting on the day you book your Eiffel Tower Tickets. Check here for the exact date and time that the sun will be setting in Paris.

Make sure to book your tickets a little earlier than sunset so you can take photos before and have time to get through security.

You will want to schedule your tickets for at least 30 minutes prior to twilight. This ensures that you have enough time to enjoy the ascent to the top level. There is no time limit at the top so if you want even more time you can book earlier.

When is the best time of year to visit the Eiffel Tower?

As we discussed there is never a bad time of day to see the Eiffel Tower, but when is the best time of year to visit the Eiffel Tower? Let’s just jump to it.

Spring is the best time of year to visit the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel tower covered by spring cherry blossoms. Looking at the tower from the Champs de Marche park.

Many will tell you to visit the Eiffel Tower from June to October. That is just because that is when France and Paris see the most visitors. Really the absolute best time to visit the Eiffel Tower is late March to May. The springtime is the absolute best to visit Paris.

The trees are beginning to blossom and Champs de Mars (The grand park at the base of the tower) is lined with trees. These trees begin to bud and blossom lining a pink path to the Tower.

The weather in Paris is mild this time of year. There is a chance that it could still be cool or cold at this time is late March and early April. The days are typically warm and the nights are cool. Just enough to put on a scarf and coat or jacket.

Avoid the crowds in Paris during the Summer

Paris brings in 30 million tourists a year. Tourists flock to Paris from across Europe and the globe. Many of these tourists will come to Paris between the months of June and September. Making Paris and the Eiffel Tower packed and busy. Everything takes longer during the summer in Paris which means you will see less of the city while wasting time in lines.

Not only that, but Paris can also get hot. To make matters even worse. There just isn’t a lot of air conditioning. No one wants to stand in a long line, in the heat and sun for hours to ascend to the top of the tower. That is not how you want to spend your vacation. Make it enjoyable and book your tickets to the Eiffel Tower in advance and visit Paris during the offseason. If you are not able to make it to Paris right away you can take a virtual vacation to Paris from your own home.

A couple in front of the Eiffel tower with scarves and coats on in the winter. Happy to be standing in front of the Eiffel tower.

What to Pack for the Eiffel Tower

Paris is a walkable city and you will want to go prepared for a lot of walking and picture taking. I would highly suggest packing a small umbrella for all your trips to Paris like these on Amazon and especially for the Eiffel Tower. Oftentimes it is raining when you get to the top of the Eiffel Tower and it’s great to be able to pull out your own umbrella.

It’s always a good idea to pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes and a few snacks for your visit to the Eiffel Tower. This will save your feet and your wallet. If you plan to purchase food at the Eiffel Tower, be prepared to spend more than you would anywhere else in Paris.

It’s usually very windy at the top and if you are visiting anytime expect the summer, you will want to pack a jacket as well. I suggest a windbreaker that folds up nicely in your suitcase and or your purse such as these.

Also, make sure to have a little cash on hand for souvenirs, there are usually vendors hanging around outside the gates and if you plan to purchase anything from them you will want to have Euros with you so that you don’t have to risk pulling out your credit cards.

Of course, make sure you pack your camera! It’s also a good idea to have a selfie stick such as one of these so that you can take epic pictures of yourself and your travel buddies without risking dropping your phone.

Wrap up on the best time to see the Eiffel Tower

So now you are in the know. You know that the best time to visit the Eiffel Tower is just before sunset in the springtime. This will give you the best possible experience at the Eiffel Tower. Paris is the springtime is like no other place in the world. You are going to the Eiffel Tower and Paris.

What a great guide! Hopefully after this pandemic I can visit Eiffel Tower again soon!

Thank you! I hope we can all get back to traveling soon too 🙂

This is a great post!! I would love to go back and visit the Eiffel Tower, its great to know the best time to visit. Thanks for this article 🙂

Thank you, Sydney. I’m so glad you liked it, I hope we an all start traveling again soon too.

' data-srcset=

This was a great post! I love Paris and can’t wait to go visit again. I went during the summer and want to return during the Spring when as you said it’s cooler and less crowded.

Thank you! I agree spring is a great time to visit Paris 🙂

' data-srcset=

This is such a helpful post! I will be planning our visit accordingly to your advice! I must ask though – what type of ticket would you suggest for the top? Lift and stairs? Just lift? How long did it take you to get to the top? Unfortunately, we are planning just a quick visit in the height of peak season but that’s okay! Just hoping we can score tickets and also get them for around sunset! With that being said, should we plan for a little earlier in the event it takes a little while to get up? All of your advice is much appreciated! Thanks. 😊🥰

Thank you! You are going to love the Eiffel Tower this time of day 🙂 I would suggest going about one hour before sunset so that you have time to get to the top before you loose the daylight. Then you can watch the sun set from the top and catch the city as it come to life with lights. I personally enjoy a few stairs so I would suggest getting the stairs and elevator ticket but if you’d rather ride to the top, the elevator is always the way to go. The first floor is a pretty easy climb and this is the largest level, there is a restaurant, gift shops, and more on this floor so plan some time for that on your way up. The next level starts to offer the best views of the city! Then of course the top has unforgettable views!

Since you are going during the peak season, the crowds will be there as well.Make sure to keep your belongings in your front pockets when you’re in crowds and nothing valuable in open pockets of a backpack. I learned this lesson the hard way! You are going to love it.

Why it's illegal to photograph the Eiffel Tower at night - but not during the day

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most photographed monuments in the world.

What many people don’t realise, however, is it’s actually illegal to take pictures of the structure at night.

Even snapping a sneaky selfie with the illuminated tower in the background is technically breaking the law.

This is because the lighting is officially classified as a work of art and due to  European Copyright Law remains under the domain of the late Pierre Bideau, the engineer who designed the current system, which was installed in 1985.

Copyright lasts for 70 years after a person’s death, and as Bideau only died in 2021, there’s a while yet before it expires.

According to  La Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel  (SETE), the building’s operating company, anyone wanting to publish a photo of the tower at night should request permission, pay for rights, and then credit the artist appropriately. Otherwise, there’s risk of fines.

The law, however, is mainly aimed at commercial use, so it’s unlikely you’ll get in trouble for taking photos for personal use.

Speaking to Condé Nast Traveller , leisure and brand photographer Marc Nouss has previously said: ‘We are talking about a monument photographed thousands of times per day.

‘I still shoot it without mentioning anything, as everyone does. But I wouldn’t take the risk by selling one taken at night.’

Taking pictures of the tower during the day is totally fine as the man who designed the structure, Gustave Eiffel, died in 1923, more than 100 years ago, so no copyright remains.

And capturing the impressive view from the top of the tower is also OK, day or night. A message on the SETE website reads: ‘The views from the Eiffel Tower are rights-free.’

Eiffel Tower light show

The Eiffel Tower lighting system has light-sensitive twilight sensors, which causes the tower to light up within less than 10 minutes of dusk.

The timing varies depending on when the sun goes down, though the lights always switch off at 11.45pm. It used to be later, but was brought forward in 2022 as part of Paris’s energy saving efforts.

For the first five minutes of each hour, the tower’s 20,000 bulbs flash, creating a sparkling effect.

The Eiffel Tower replica outside is amazing to look at at and great photo opportunities to take from afar. I ended up purchasing the viewing deck tickets in advance before arriving due to the high reviews. Experience: Very long wait time to get up to the viewing deck as the elevators can only hold a small number amount of people and only a limited number of people can be at the top. The view was not that impressive, especially since it's all caged and only had small holes to view properly. The space was really tight so, it was really narrow to walk on. Overall, I highly do not recommend coming here. The only thing that was good was that most of the customer service team was friendly. I rarely ever write such low reviews and really disappointed how the experience was quite meh.

This was a pretty big disappointment to me. Maybe it's because there's so much construction for the race and we could hear picketers as well. The history was interesting and I had no idea Shaq owned some of the restaurants either. We had a perfect view of the Bellagio show but walked away before the lights started. There was a highly intoxicated couple that were really a distraction unfortunately. I have to say I wouldn't recommend.

This is a pretty fun experience if you're ever in Vegas. It's family friendly and offers a great view of the strip. It's a lot higher than it looks from below. I would recommend going during nicer weather though as it was quite cold and windy when I went. You can pretty much see everything from up there though including the brand new Sphere. It's probably even cooler at night when everything is lit up. Highly recommend especially if you've never been.

After our stay here at the Paris Hotel, we decided to check out the viewing deck as well. I mean why not, we can cross it off our bucket list too. We had to wait until noon for it to open. I will say, in January it is so cold and windy, but it was sunny too. The views from up top is nice and you can see that we're located pretty much in the middle of the strip that is popular. You can go around and see old Vegas and the new sphere.

Very nice view and very kind staff, makes me want to go to Paris and see the real tower! We were even able to catch a water show while we looked around, it did not disappoint!

On my first trip to Vegas, I was intrigued by the Eiffel Tower, a replica half the size of the famous landmark in Paris, France. I purchased a ticket for $31. Took the escalator up to the elevator, then headed up 46 stories above the Las Vegas strip. WOW, what a view! You can see everything from the observation deck, the mountains, the airport, and all the high-rise hotels. I didn't realize I timed it just right and caught the fountain show at the Bellagio across the street. Best view EVER! There's no time limit as you are able to stay as long as you want. And the ticket was good for three days, so you can come back. Next trip, I plan to go after dark.

We attended a conference at Paris Hotel this year. After a day and evening of conference activities, we went up to the Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck. it was a beautiful view of the Las Vegas skyline. Doesn't take long to walk around the deck and enjoy the 360-degree view. So nice to get the views and enjoy the air after being indoors all day and evening.

The next best thing to going to France to see the Eiffel Tower! This replica stands tall at 460ft, approximately half the size of the actual Eiffel Tower. Located at the Paris hotel (obviously), you can buy tickets online, at the kiosk, or at the gift shop. We opted for the kiosk which we ended up regretting since it was out of paper and we had to stand in the long line at the gift shop instead. Nonetheless, we were able to get our tickets (~$30/pp) and we made our way up the escalator to the elevator. It takes about 90sec to get all the way to the top and you pass by the restaurant on the second floor. The observation deck is a bit small, but you can walk around to get a full 360 view and they have holes in the bars to take pictures. Just be careful because the last thing you want to do is drop your phone! I'd recommend going around the same time that the Bellagio water show happens, since it's an amazing view from up top.

I saved a few dollars and I got my ticket on Groupon!!! Employees are friendly and very knowledgeable about the real Eiffel Tower Once you get to the viewing deck basically all you see is the strip ..... There isn't a bar or anything at the top of the viewing deck I'm glad I can say I did it But it's like no frills kinda thing The coolest part was walking over the bridge and seeing the LOCKS of love I came I saw I did it On the the next

The Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck at Paris Las Vegas is a great way to see Las Vegas from above. It's $25+$3 fee to go up 46 stories in an elevator within the Eiffel Tower. I would plan about 30-45 minutes for the experience. You can walk around on the Viewing Deck to get 360 degree views of the city. I went during the day where you can see quite far. Of course this would be a whole different experience at night with all the lights. I went on the High Roller at night which is why I decided to do this experience during the day. I recommend going to one experience with aerial views at night and one during the day. That way you get the best of both worlds. Note there's also a fine dining restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower at a lower elevation than the Viewing Deck.

Eiffel Tower loses sparkle for Parisians ahead of Olympics

Saturday, 11 May 2024

The Eiffel Tower is set for a starring role during the Paris Olympics this year, but the landmark and its park have become symbols of the capital’s struggles with cleanliness and crime.

In the shadow of the 330m-tall monument, workers are already building the temporary stadium that will host the beach volleyball during the Olympics, which start on July 26.

The opening ceremony along the River Seine will also finish in front of the attraction, while judo and wrestling will take place in a semi-permanent exhibition space at the far end of its park.

Although the sport will look spectacular in the TV coverage, behind the scenes the area has become a lightning rod for complaints about the management of public space in the capital and the pressures of mass tourism.

“It’s very dirty and it’s getting worse and worse,” said local resident Frederic Mabilon, 78, as she walked her dog in the Champ-de-Mars park beneath the iron monument known as the “Iron Lady”.

Mabilon remembers visiting the area as a child, enjoying the merry-go-rounds and play areas that have been closed ahead of the Olympics – much to the anger of their operators.

“Look there,” she said, pointing to a man urinating on the fence of one of the homes that line the park. “It happens all the time. There aren’t enough toilets.”

Mikael Dalle, a 53-year-old local out with his son, said he was bothered by the illegal hawkers who shout out to passers-by, offering unlicensed food and drinks, trinkets and berets.

“It’s definitely got worse and we’ve lived around here for the last eight years,” he said.

Street crime

Around seven million people ascend the Eiffel Tower each year and many more pose for photos, eat picnics, or play ball games in the Champ-de-Mars.

With so many visitors, the park’s lawns are often rubbed bare, while at night they are left strewn with rubbish by revellers.

“You should see it at 6am. It’s catastrophic,” complained another local dog walker, Louis, 53, who preferred not to give his surname.

Left-over food and overflowing bins are a delight for the flourishing local rat population.

And while low-level street crime such as pick-pocketing and scams have long been a feature of Paris’s tourist hotspots, two alleged rapes took place on the Champ-de-Mars at night last year, shocking locals.

“I’ve told my eldest daughter not to walk through here in the dark,” Louis explained.

The right-wing opponents of Socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo blame her for the problems, with local senator Agnes Evren claiming the area has turned into “the far-west”.

Even the tower’s workers are unhappy, launching a five-day strike in February to protest against its state of disrepair and demanding the city spend more on painting and anti-rust protection.

Trashed online

Hidalgo, an eco-minded left-winger re-elected for a second term in 2020, is admired by many for her policies to restrict cars and promote cycling.

But she has also been dogged by complaints about cleanliness, with a survey in 2021 suggesting eight out of 10 Parisians found their city “dirty”.

An online campaign in 2021 called #saccageParis (#TrashedParis), in which residents shared pictures of filth or ugliness, struck a chord in a city that prides itself on its elegance.

To tackle the security problems, police announced a major operation for the Eiffel Tower area in June 2023, leading to several dozen police officers on the ground per day.

“We’ve had excellent results in this area as well as other tourist zones in Paris,” said Paris police chief Laurent Nunez recently.

“But we need to continue. The Olympics are coming,” he added.

The number of reported physical assaults fell by 58% to 21 incidents in the first quarter of the year compared with the same period of 2023, while property crimes were down 18%, he said.

Much of the Champ-de-Mars now stands behind steel fencing, its protected lawns growing back, its gardeners busy preparing it for hundreds of thousands of foreign sports fans.

“Paris will shine, Paris will be beautiful, Paris will be ready to welcome the world,” deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire promised. – AFP
