PASSING NEPTUNE, VOYAGER FINISHES A 12-YEAR MISSION

By John Noble Wilford, Special To the New York Times

  • Aug. 25, 1989

PASSING NEPTUNE, VOYAGER FINISHES A 12-YEAR MISSION

Out in the twilight of the solar system, far from the warmth of the Sun and the vitality of Earth, Voyager 2 cruised over the cold blue clouds of Neptune tonight, its cameras snapping pictures and its sensors gathering data on the composition and dynamic forces of the giant planet.

The rendezvous was the culmination of the most far-ranging exploration of the planets in the 32-year history of the space age.

''This is it,'' Dr. Edward C. Stone, the chief project scientist, said at a news conference here at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. ''This is the 24 hours we've been waiting for.'' Fluffy Clouds Cast Shadows

As Voyager 2 approached Neptune at a speed of 38,000 miles an hour, it transmitted new photographs showing sharper details of the swirling clouds in Neptune's Great Dark Spot, a storm system the size of Earth. High-riding fluffy clouds were observed casting distinct shadows on the thicker atmosphere dozens of miles below. Two more small moons were discovered, bringing the planet's number of known satellites to eight.

Voyager's closest approach to Neptune, at a distance of about 3,000 miles, was scheduled to occur at 11:56 P.M. Eastern time. But because Neptune is so far away, it would be 4 hours, 6 minutes of anxious waiting before flight controllers could receive confirming radio messages from the spacecraft. The distance is so great that from Neptune, the Sun is nothing but a very bright point of light.

More than five hours after the Neptune passage, at 5:10 A.M. Friday, Voyager was to fly within 24,000 miles of Triton, Neptune's largest moon, which has strange surface colorings of pink and blue. Triton is slightly smaller than Earth's Moon, but is one of the few natural satellites in the solar system with a distinct atmosphere. #4.4-Billion-Mile Voyage Many of the best pictures from the close encounter of Neptune and Triton will not be transmitted and processed until Friday or in some cases Saturday.

After that, Voyager will be heading out of the solar system, for the empty reaches of interstellar space.

In its 12-year, 4.4-billion-mile voyage, the one-ton spacecraft has survived mechanical and electronic adversity, crossed the asteroid belt beyond Mars and passed close to the kaleidoscopic face of Jupiter, the resplendent rings of Saturn and then pale Uranus and its retinue of moons and dark rings. In recent days it has focused on the stormy atmosphere of Neptune and its accompanying moons and puzzling rings of orbiting debris.

Norman R. Haynes, the project manager, said Voyager's trajectory, off by only 21 miles from original predictions, should take it safely outside Neptune's equatorial plane. That region is littered with hurtling debris that forms at least two rings and is scattered as a diffuse blizzard of dust as well. There is little risk of damage if the spacecraft hits tiny dust particles, engineers said, but anything as large as birdshot could deliver a crippling blow.

''The spacecraft is performing admirably,'' Mr. Haynes said. Beyond Expectations

Just making it to Neptune, and still being able to send home picture postcards of a planet never before seen up close, Voyager 2 has exceeded expectations. The spacecraft, launched in 1977, was designed to fly only to Jupiter and Saturn. After the Saturn encounter in 1981, Voyager had fuel and electric power to spare, so it was directed on a new course to Uranus in 1986 and then to Neptune.

As a result, Voyager 2 was able to accomplish a grand tour of the outer planets that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration had once contemplated but then rejected because of budget constraints. Of the nine known planets, only Pluto remains unexplored by spacecraft. Neptune is usually the eighth planet out from the Sun, but because of Pluto's peculiarly elongated orbit, Neptune will be the outermost planet until 1999.

Flight engineers had to nurse the aging spacecraft through bouts of computer memory loss and paralysis in the gears of its instrument platform. The primary radio receiver failed early in the mission and the backup unit is virtually tone-deaf, unable to pick up variations in radio frequencies.

At Neptune, nonetheless, all 11 scientific instruments, including the two television cameras, are operating. And the pictures and data are being sent to Earth, nearly 2.8 billion miles away, by a transmitter with only 20 watts of power. By the time the signals reach tracking antennas on Earth their strength has diminished to a fraction of a billionth of a watt. Earth Not Visible From There

The light from the Sun at Neptune is barely one-thousandth the brightness at Earth, requiring especially long exposure times for Voyager cameras. Indeed, to someone riding on Voyager 2 now, the Sun would appear to be only a little more luminous than Jupiter looks from Earth. Jupiter ranks behind only the Moon and Venus among the brightest objects in the Earth's night sky. Earth would not be visible from Neptune at all, except through a telescope.

In the hours of suspense before the close encounter, Voyager got near enough to the rings and small inner moons to take the best pictures scientists are likely to get of these features for a long time.

New photographs of the first of six new moons found by Voyager, named 1989 N1, disclosed that it is larger than Nereid, one of the two Neptunian moons known before the mission. Scientists reported today that the diameter of N1 appeared to be 260 miles, compared to Nereid's 210 miles. Astronomers had been able to glimpse Nereid from Earth because it is far enough from Neptune to be out of the planet's glow of reflected sunlight, which had concealed the presence of the moons found by Voyager.

Dr. Bradford A. Smith, an astronomer at the Univeristy of Arizona and leader of the team studying the pictures, said the two most recently discovered moons, designated 1989 N5 and N6, were respectively 60 miles and 30 miles wide. They were orbiting Neptune's equator. Triton, the largest, is about 1,720 miles in diameter. More Evidence of Rings

Dr. Smith also reported that new pictures of Neptune's rings indicated more strongly than ever that both contained dust and other particles that completely encircled the planet. Previously, it was thought that Neptune was surrounded not by complete rings, like those at Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, but by fragmentary rings, or ring arcs. Two days ago, the inner arc was found to be a complete ring.

Analysis of more recent photographs, Dr. Smith said, showed the outer arc to be only 10 degrees shy of a complete circle.

''So I think it's almost certain this is a complete ring, and the rest of the material has to be there,'' Dr. Smith said.

Voyager's remote sensing instruments also made systematic surveys of the planet's temperatures and atmospheric composition. Scientists said the search for auroras at Neptune's poles had turned up nothing so far.

Pictures of the southern polar region showed bright high clouds casting shadows on the thick deck of clouds far below. By analyzing the angles of the incoming sunlight and the shadows, scientists have determined that at least 30 or 40 miles of clear sky separate the higher methane clouds from the lower ones.

''This is the first time Voyager has seen cloud shadows on any planet it has visited,'' Dr. Smith said.

Monday, Late Edition - Final An article on Aug. 25 about Voyager 2 misstated the luminosity of the Sun as it would appear from Neptune. The Sun would appear several million times brighter than Jupiter does, as seen from Earth (although the Sun would look only slightly larger than Jupiter); the apparent difference in brightness would not be slight.
