Do your 45 minute architecture tours have heated cabins or is it out in the open? Just trying to determine whether we will need to bundle up extra to enjoy the tour

Yes. All our boats have heated main cabins and full bars.

Can someone please tell me the route for the sunset cruise? Do you do the different branch of the river and some of the lake? I can't find a map online. Thanks!

The Sunset Cruise is primarily a lake cruise. It is not the standard narrated architecture tour. We do not go on the north or south branches of the river.

With so many different river tour companies to choose from, I'm glad I decided to go with Wendella. Their loading dock is conveniently located off Michigan Ave...super easy to find. It cost $44.00 per person for a 90 minute tour. Our tour guide was informative and kept the tour interesting. I really enjoyed hearing the history/facts of buildings, architect, how goose island came to be, etc. We were here for St Patrick's Day weekend and it was cool seeing where the green dye stopped. I've always thought there was some kind of 'stopper' somewhere but our tour guide said by the waves of the currant....the dye doesn't flow in that direction. There's bathrooms located on the first level of the boat. Clean and for a bathroom in a boat....it was relatively spacious. Alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages as well as snacks can be purchase on this floor also. Dress accordingly, especially if you want to be on the upper deck which let's face it...that's where you want to be at to be able to see everything. For the colder months....literally over dress. You're on the river so the temperature is much colder! Plus add in the wind/breeze....you'll be miserable if you don't dress warm. I even thought to myself at what point does frostbite kick in because my toes were numb! This was my first time visiting and I was glad to have chosen Wendella for a crash course in Chicago history.

We did the 1.5 Hour Guided Architecture Tour on the Chicago River and absolutely loved it! Definitely book your excursion through Wendella! We arrived about 30 minutes before our scheduled boarding time and were towards the front of the line to board the boat. Finding the boat was very easy - you can see the sign off of DuSable Bridge! The boat is large and has both indoor and outdoor space. The bottom deck has a nice covered area with chairs to sit on. They also have a bar which sells a variety of hot and cold beverages plus snacks. Our tour guide was very engaging and informative! We learned a lot about the history of the buildings around the river and of the city in general. One recommendation I would have is to increase the volume of the speakers especially on the lower deck. At times it was difficult to hear the tour guide, but overall, not a deal breaker for an otherwise awesome experience!

Came here for the 12noon tour today leaving from Wrigley building at the docks - and it was a fantastic experience! Tickets were $44 per person and we booked tickets online the week before. The tour came highly recommended from friends who are from Chicago and also tourist visitors. Pros: - A pretty good price for what you get! The tour is 90 mins long and you get a LOT of information and entertainment ! - lots of seats available in the upper deck , but if you really want a good one I recommend lining up early - there's a good view from anywhere on the boat, but I recommend a seat that either faces forward or to the right - since the tour guide often points at buildings on the right when he talks about it - super entertaining tour! Talks about multiple buildings and architects, and talks about some Chicago history (including the world fair, the Chicago fire, etc). Corny jokes but they kept me focused ! - really good speaker system on the upper deck and outside on the lower deck - if you get cold, you can go inside to the lower deck area - bar available ! - super easy to use screenshot mobile tickets that they email you (Not legit ) Cons: - can get cold upstairs during windy seasons! Strongly recommend dressing warmly or appropriately if you go in the summer - speakers inside lower deck can't really be heard if there's a lot of talking amongst the clients Overall 10/10, strongly recommend for anyone visiting the city! The crew made us feel safe the entire time.

It's been a hot minute since I was back in Chicago, so having a few days to explore on our own before heading to Indiana with friends, my husband and I opted to see the cities architecture by boat! It proved to be an A+ experience! ++ Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made online - along with payment! Tickets are sent straight to your email or phone making the process seamless in checking in and boarding the boat! ++ Pricing ranges depending on the type of tour taken...and there are plenty to choose from! 45 minute, 90 minute architecture tours, firework cruise, sunset cruise, wine and cheese tour, etc...! We chose the 90-minute tour and paid $44/person which we found to be extremely reasonable! ++ What a unique view of Chicago! Despite the tour you choose, you'll wind your way through the waterways and see skyscrapers of all sizes and learn history along the way! There is literally no better seat in the house to experience Chicago! ++ We opted for a mid-morning tour which proved to be a great idea. It wasn't too crowded despite the rooftop being pretty full. The weather was a perfect sunshiney day - but beware - the rooftop gets HOT, so make way to the lower level for a bit of shade and a cocktail to cool down! Just to note: getting to the boat, on-board and exiting is all handicap friendly, so everyone can partake in the fun! ++ Staff is insanely friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable of their Chicago history! Our guide knew all kinds of information pertaining to the cities' history, architecture, even where celebrities lived and provided us with fun trivia questions along the way! He made the experience that much better! ++ Beverages and food are offered for purchase on-board and decent at that! We happily sipped on refreshing cocktails as we made our way through the city! I could easily go on and on about this tour, as it was one of my favorites to date! I can easily see why this tour and company was rated one of the best in town!

This was a really great cruise, it was so nice out, kinda windy and cold the day we went but overall a really great experience. From lining up to get on the boat to grabbing a drink at the bar. There's seating up top and below as week that's shaded and even an indoor area where the bar is. If you're visiting Chicago or just want to go on a nice guided tour to learn more about the architecture then consider taking this ride.

This summer I was able to go on one of the Wendella tour cruises and it was a great time. You want to arrive at the dock at least 30 minutes early if you plan on boarding on time but they also means you can be standing in the sun for quite some time so be mindful of that. We ordered our tickets from Groupon and overall it costs around $42 per person plus tax for a 90 minute lake and River tour. After boarding we went to get some drinks from the bar and then went back to our seats. One the staff gave us a lot of historic facts as we rode over the river and that was great and informative ,but when we finally went to the lake that is when things really picked up. I was shocked at how blue the water looked. The sights were very nice as well as we were able to see a lot of the skyscrapers in Chicago from a distance. We plan on going again next summer. We took the 90 minute architectural tour this weekend and it was great! I would recommend getting there early if you want to get a good seat up on top of the boat, we barely got a spot and we were 20 min early. The tour guide Zack was amazing, very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. Learned a lot about the history of the building in the city, and Chicago itself - Fort, Fire, Fair & Fair! We were very happy we took this river boat tour.

My experience with Wendella Tours and Cruises was overall solid. It was a bit challenging to hear the guide, and finding the departure point proved to be a bit of a struggle; we had to rely on an employee from a different cruise to assist us. Once on board, the boat felt crowded, but the trade-off was the stunning views of Chicago, which truly rocked. The 45-minute duration of the tour felt just right; anything longer might have been a bit tiresome. In the end, despite the initial hiccups, it provided a great introduction to Chicago for newcomers, showcasing the city's beauty and giving me a ton of fun facts I could drop for the next several weeks!

Highly recommend this tour! For 90 minutes our awesome guide Joe entertained us on Chicago history, architecture, culture, and anecdotes with humor and pride. He even welcomed questions during a tour break. It's great to be around someone who really enjoys his job. The views are spectacular. Advance reservations are highly recommended and for $42, a great deal for daytime and sunset tours. Plus alcohol is sold on the boat, which turns around for extra views. I loved the variety of architecture and learning how Chicago was intentionally developed for all to enjoy and access. Natives and visitors would enjoy the great energy of this beautiful river city. My one complaint is to provide CLEARER INSTRUCTIONS on where to line up to board. We were confused by the website instructions. After someone pointed us in the right direction, tunnel signs would have helped.

Wendella’s Lake and River Architecture Tour   is their original tour offering. It not only takes you on the Chicago River but also Lake Michigan. You’ll get to enjoy and learn about Chicago’s skyline as seen from the Chicago River. Then, you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and float out onto Lake Michigan for the best view of the city.

Prices for the Wendella Chicago Boat Tour

How much a Wendella architectural boat tour costs depends on the tour you take. These are the prices as of publication:

• The  45-minute archi t ecture tour  costs $12 for kids ages 4-12 and $27 for anyone 13 and up. Children under 4 are FREE but still require a ticket.
• Both  90-minute tours  cost $19 for kids ages 4-12 and $42 for anyone over 12. Children ages three and under are FREE, but still, you need to reserve them a ticket.

Amenities on Board a Wendella Boat Tour

Plenty of amenities are   available to you during your architectural river tour on Wendella.

Let’s get the most critical amenity out of the way first. Yes, there are  restrooms on board ! So, if you’re visiting Chicago with kids, you don’t have to worry about them needing to use the bathroom right after the boat leaves the dock.

If you get hungry or thirsty on board, there is a  full-service bar  serving soda, wine, local beer, and cocktails. They also have some  snacks  available for purchase.

Lastly, although we recommend sitting on the top deck for the best views of the city, the below deck is climate-controlled. So, if you’re visiting Chicago on a hot day or during the winter, you’ll be plenty comfortable on board.

Wendella Chicago River Tour Experience

You’ll have fun on a Wendella boat tour! Most people agree that the Wendella architecture tour is a  more relaxed experience  compared to other Chicago boat tours. The guides tell corny jokes (almost on par with the Jungle Cruise at Disney) while sharing exciting history and tidbits about the architecture in Chicago.

The  45-mi nute tour  will take you along the Chicago River, first heading west and south before turning around. You’ll get views of the buildings in the Loop, West Loop, and River North neighborhoods, as well as the Navy Pier.

Wendella’s  90-minute architecture tour  follows a similar route as the 45-minute, except it heads further south on the Chicago River and explores some of the north branch.

If you opt for the  90-minute Lake and River tour , you’ll experience a shorter tour on the Chicago River, but then you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and enjoy the view of the skyline from the massive Lake Michigan.

The boat tour on the Chicago River was very  smooth . No big waves to cause rocking of the boat. Of course, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to take medication or wear a patch prior to boarding. We did not do the Lake and River tour, but it is probably rougher out on Lake Michigan than the river.

Fun Fact: There are almost two dozen bridges that cross the Chicago River in the downtown area, alone. You’ll go under several of them while you’re on your architectural boat tour!

Tips for Your Wendella Boat Ride

• Arrive early:  They ask you to arrive 15-30 minutes before the tour to allow time to board. We arrived precisely 30 minutes before the tour started, and people were already in line. If you want a seat on the top deck, get there early.
• Sit near a speaker or close to the guide:  The guides share so many interesting facts and silly jokes you don’t want to miss them because you can’t hear them. They use a microphone, but with the sounds of the city, the wind, and other passing boats, it can be hard to hear everything.
• Dress warmer:  Unless it’s the middle of summer, you’ll probably be a little colder on the boat than you are walking around the city. Between the water and the breeze from the boat, it makes you feel colder, so bring a jacket in the fall and spring, and don’t forget a hat and scarf in the colder months.
