Miles & Points Interview:   The Luxury Travel Expert

Xavier founded The Luxury Travel Expert  as a source for luxury travel on a budget.

How and when did you start collecting miles and points?

I started collecting miles and points about 8 years ago.  At the moment, I’m an American Airlines Executive Platinum member, a Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum member, and a Miles & More Frequent Flyer . 

Why did you start your blog?  What’s special about it?

With a couple of friends (all of us are doctors), I started the blog 2 months ago, with a focus on luxury travel on a budget.

There is an avalanche of travel websites, information, and reviews out there.  We feel that this enormous amount of information can both inspire and frustrate the demanding traveler ( “Too many choices!,”   “Is it worth it?,” and  “Will it fit my taste?” ). 

So we want to filter all that information into 1 clear website with a single focus on luxury travel.  It’s based on our own 20 years of experience of traveling around the world.  Besides some permanent helpful information on the website, we also send 3 weekly newsletters on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, that feature:

• Inspiration on Monday: top 10 travel lists to inspire .
• Reviews on Wednesday: luxury hotel , flight , and destination reviews.
• Tips on Friday: competitions , interesting airline & hotel offers , tips for luxury travel on a budget , luxury travel news & trends, and (in the very near future) airline miles & hotel points news.

What’s the one single thing people can do to get more miles?

Subscribe to the newsletters of bloggers like Daraius to be instantly updated on promotions for earning extra miles or hotel points.  For example, American Airlines always has a big returning promotion for European customers in autumn that gives you 30,000 extra miles per trans-Atlantic business flight.

What’s your most memorable travel experience?

I would like to mention a couple of travel experiences, which were all memorable in their own category:

• Beach Holiday – nothing beats a Maldives holiday at a luxury hotel like Gili Lankanfushi  or One & Only Reethi Rah .
• Wildlife Holiday – tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi’s National Park , Uganda
• Scenic Holiday – hiking in Torres del Paine National Park , Chilean Patagonia
• Cultural Holiday – visiting temples of Angkor Wat , Cambodia
• Flying Business Class – Qatar Airways Dreamliner Boeing 787

What do your family and friends think of your miles & points hobby?

In the beginning, I think they found it weird.  Meanwhile, I found them crazy not to make more efforts to travel for free.

Nowadays, I’ve convinced most of my friends and family that miles & points can really save a lot of money when you travel often.  They all joined frequent flyer programs and some of them are helping me with the blog.

Is there any tool or trick which you’ve found especially useful in this hobby?

You can travel in style for almost free when you are an airline mile or hotel point freak.  But it does take quite some effort to get some basic knowledge of how to collect miles & points in the most efficient manner .

So I think the best trick is to take some time and get familiar with loyalty programs and choose the 1 that best fits your travel profile.

In addition, when you really like to stay at the top hotels (and who doesn’t), you will have noticed that many of the high end hotels, like Aman or Four Seasons, don’t have loyalty programs (except for St Regis and Park Hyatt).

But I learned that you can still get a lot of free perks at those resorts when you make a booking through a Virtuoso travel agent .  So there are alternatives for loyalty programs at these uber-luxurious hotels, but you have to know them.  I have a list of tips on my website.

What was the least expected way you’ve earned miles or points?

Earning miles by writing trip reports on Tripadvisor (through the Indian Tripadvisor website ) and Holiday Check .

What do you now know about collecting miles and points which you wish you knew when you started out?

You have to choose and stick to a few airline and hotel loyalty programs!  In the beginning, I was collecting miles and points in a non-focused way through different airline and hotel programs.  And in the end I couldn’t do anything with them, because they expired or I did not have enough points in my accounts.

About 3 years ago I shifted my focus and now mainly earn American Airlines miles (even though I am based in Europe) and hotel points through Starwood Preferred Guest.

What would your readers be surprised to know about you?

We are from Belgium, not from the USA.  And our main focus is cancer research for finding a cure and better diagnostic tests.  So we run the website in our sparse free time.

We want to combine our 2 passions of cancer research and traveling.  And how everyone could sponsor cancer research simply by traveling.  But we will inform you about this as soon as our ideas are more concrete.

Overwater bungalows started as a bottom-tier accommodation. Today, they're a status symbol in the luxury travel world.

• Overwater bungalows originated nearly 60 years ago in Tahiti.
• The first rooms cost $240 a night. Today, experts say they're a staple in the luxury travel market.
• The accommodations have since expanded in region, size, and amenities.

The first overwater bungalow had a thatched roof, a window peering into the ocean, and a ladder leading into the water.

Fast-forward 60 years, and overwater villas can now feature multi-story water slides, infinity pools, and personal butlers. They can also cost upwards of $8,000 a night at some of the world's ritziest resorts.

There's no doubt the accommodation style has expanded since its start in Tahiti in 1967, and travel experts agree they aren't going away anytime soon. Instead, the overwater villa has become a status symbol of luxury travel.

The start of the overwater bungalows

In 1959, three Americans left California for Tahiti's lush landscapes and crystal waters.

The men — Jay Carlisle, Hugh Kelley, and Donald McCallum — relocated with plans to start vanilla farming. When they learned the land they purchased wasn't suitable for vanilla, they turned to hospitality, Vaihiria Kelley, the daughter of Hugh Kelley, told Business Insider.

They purchased a four-room, run-down property on the island of Moorea and named it Bali Hai. The trio became known as the Bali Hai Boys.

Their timing was ideal, Kelley said. Shortly after renovating the hotel, a new airport connected international travelers to Tahiti, which had previously only been accessible by boat. In 1962, Life Magazine wrote a seven-page feature on Tahiti and the Bali Hai Boys. Tourism boomed.

After that, the men purchased two more hotels on two other islands.

As the hotels grew in popularity, they needed to grow in size. Two of the properties had the land to expand, but the third hotel on the island of Raiatea didn't, Kelley said. Instead, it was surrounded by roads, neighboring resorts, and the ocean.

"The overwater bungalow didn't start out of, 'Oh, let's think of something really innovative,'" Kelley said. "It really came out of a need."

Without land to expand, the ocean was their only option. Nearby, on the island of Huahine, traditional Tahitian fishing huts lined the coast.

That's where the trio found their inspiration, Kelley said. The basic fishing huts sat on coconut trunk pillars and had thatched roofs. Mimicking the style, they built three overwater bungalows to join the garden and pool bungalows that also filled the Raiatea property in 1967.

Kelley said the men assumed the overwater bungalows were the least desirable at the time and priced them at just $240 a day , including meals.

"They didn't expect that it would be so popular," Kelley said.

Vacationers were enchanted by falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking up to dive straight into the water. After realizing they had a successful concept, Kelley said the Bali Hai Boys began adding overwater bungalows to their two other properties. It wasn't long before other resorts on islands across French Polynesia started copying the design.

Kelley, who grew up in Moorea, remembers watching her dad welcome guests to the hotel. Celebrities and actors traveled across the world to sleep in the overwater bungalows.

"When you see the pictures now, you think, 'Oh my God, it's very '70s," Kelley said. "But for that time, it was very luxurious."

Nearly 60 years later, it remains a luxurious vacation, Ronan McLoughlin, the owner of Dream Overwater Bungalows , a website that compiles resorts around the world, told BI.

Today, there are about 250 resorts that offer accommodations over the water, with many being four or five-star resorts.

The original resort on Raiatea has since closed, but Kelley said she sees a bit of her dad's vision each time she sees an overwater bungalow.

While the concept has existed for decades, experts say it remains a luxury staple

Jason Toms has spent the last four years helping travelers build tailor-made vacations in the Maldives at the luxury travel company Audley Travel .

And if someone is traveling to the Maldives, chances are they're looking to sleep in an overwater villa.

"It's the signature way to stay in the Maldives," Toms told BI. "My clients, who are typically traveling from the US, 95% are asking for overwater villas."

Lucy Rudgard, the senior oceans and islands expert at the luxury tour operator Scott Dunn , agreed, adding that the appeal of overwater stays goes beyond just the Maldives.

"It's always No. 1 on people's list," she said, noting that travelers are also willing to pay a lot for the experience of sleeping above water. In destinations like the Maldives and Bora Bora, overwater villas can cost twice as much as a beachside resort.

For Rudgard's clients, the entry cost for a week in an overwater villa might be around $30,000, but she estimates some clients have spent more than $250,000 for overwater vacations.

McLoughlin said these high costs are also partly why the accommodations have remained a luxury staple.

"There's a status to it as well because they're automatically expensive in most places," McLoughlin said since it can be expensive to build the bungalows.

On top of that, it's no easy feat for many US travelers to get to some of these faraway destinations, which adds another layer of luxury to the accommodation.

"If you were to be seen in an overwater bungalow, it meant that either you're in the Maldives or in Bora Bora or somewhere fancy," McLoughlin said.

Overwater resorts continue to pop up around the world

For decades, overwater bungalows were largely limited to the Maldives and French Polynesia. But within the last eight years, the concept has expanded to the Caribbean , a destination much closer to most Americans.

But building an overwater bungalow in the Caribbean can be a hard task to accomplish, Danny Kalenov, the developer behind Six Senses Belize , an overwater bungalow resort that's set to open in 2026, told BI.

Places like the Maldives and Bora Bora are ideal for overwater bungalows because they are dotted with lagoons, atolls, and calm waters. Plus, hurricanes are few and far between.

As the vacation style became one that everyone dreamed of, builders were determined to offer the experience of sleeping above water in the Caribbean.

In 2016, the Sandals Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, became the first overwater bungalow resort in the area .

"Now, they've started to pop up everywhere in the last seven or six years," McLoughlin said.

Today, Dream Overwater has cataloged nine Caribbean locations home to more than a dozen overwater bungalow resorts.

According to Kalenov, the demand for the experience is still high, with Americans wanting to travel closer to home. That's why the luxury hotel brand Six Senses is building a private island resort with 40 overwater villas off Belize's Ambergris Caye.

The company is using a custom-built barge made specifically for shallow water and specialized equipment. Kalenov compared the process to "filling a swimming pool with a teaspoon."

And while the construction might be more challenging than a traditional resort, he said the end product — and experience he's creating — will be worth it.

It's not just Six Senses that's betting on overwater villas. Royalton Chic Antigua is set to open this spring with 12 overwater suites, and Sandals in St. Vincent and the Grenadines opened at the end of March with 10 two-story villas starting at $1,570-a-person per night.

"We believe that this type of experience is the future of luxury travel and the future of hospitality in general," Kalenov said.

I Went on a $75,000 Luxury Air Cruise for 22 Days. Here's a Peek Inside the Over-the-Top Travel Experience Unlike Any I've Had Before. I wanted to do something epic to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary with my wife.

I first learned about Safrans du Monde , the luxury French tour operator and travel agency, from an article in Travel + Leisure that came out last spring. When I first saw that article, I sent it to my wife, sort of along the lines of This is ridiculous, who could do this. This is epic but so over the top. We laughed about it and thought how cool it sounded, then sort of forgot about it. Then, about six months later, I realized our 30th wedding anniversary was coming up, and maybe we should do something big because 30 years is a long time she's been suffering with me, and that article came back to mind.

I was drawn to it because it's such an interesting and painless way to cross off so many items on your bucket list at once. The trip we went on was the Grands Classiques , so we saw Machu Picchu , Easter Island, the Taj Mahal and so many other iconic places. At one point a few years ago, we looked into getting to Easter Island, and just getting there is no small feat. And that was just one of the stops that you could do on this 22-day excursion. We had been to Sydney twice before because my brother lived in Australia for 15 years, but otherwise all of the destinations were new. Seeing the Taj Mahal was just so impressive and a little surreal to suddenly be there, particularly when we had been in Cambodia the day before, and witnessing that as the sun rose was incredible. It's something I'll never forget. From a destination standpoint, I was also struck by Bora Bora and just how beautiful it was.

Tickets for our trip cost $75,000. There were 52 passengers total on our vacation, and there was a French-speaking group and an English-speaking group. Our sort of subgroup was about 15 English-speaking people, and we had our own guide who stayed with us the entire time. She was on the plane from day one until the end and took care of everything — from visas and collecting passports before we went to certain destinations to letting us know what was happening next. We had a local guide for just our group who met us at each destination and stayed with us from the time we arrived until they dropped us back at the airport. The ability to have all of these experiences with no planning on our part and very little thinking about what we needed to do — hotels, transportation, meals — was remarkable and stress-free.

The plane itself had plenty of room; you have your own seat for the entire 22 days. You have the same flight attendants, the same pilots, the same chef. It was a little inverse of a normal trip where the plane flight could be sort of taxing. Getting to the destination was very relaxing , but you did have to hustle a little bit to see things on the ground. My wife and I joked a little bit that it was like the Amazing Race : One morning, we're looking at the Easter Island statues, and that afternoon, we're landing in Tahiti. But they did have a nice break scheduled in French Polynesia. We were there for four days, and it was much less planned, so we could relax a little bit more. There is a lot packed into that trip in a fairly short period of time, and I was grateful that we did it at a point where we still had the energy and mobility to do things like that.

It's not an inexpensive trip, but when you look at the value provided, it's completely worth it. The logistics of getting to these places are very difficult when you fly on commercial airlines and have to make various connections. So logistically, it was so much easier. It was so much more pleasant not having to think about all of the planning and just be well taken care of the entire time. It made it both more cost-efficient and more enjoyable when you add up all the things you got to see.

Consider it a form of revolt against the crush of steel tool watches that have dominated the market over the past five years. Tony Sylvester , London-based menswear designer of the independent label AWMS, says he wears a Piaget Protocole because he likes the juxtaposition of his bigger frame with a more delicate timepiece. “It’s quite nice to wear battered old jeans or a pair of combat trousers with a really formal watch,” he explains. “Especially when people would expect someone my size to be wearing a kind of tough sports watch, something military.” Meanwhile, in Florence, the sartorial set at Pitti Uomo in January went hard on delicately ornate dress watches—a vintage white-gold Protocole with a lapis-lazuli dial worn by one fashion buyer being a notable standout—and two months later at a Robb Report event in Austin, Texas, a 30-something venture capitalist strolled in wearing a quilted Swedish camo jacket, white Nike ACG sneakers, and a solid-gold ’70s-era Piaget with an asymmetrical dial. 

And it’s not just vintage and retro-inspired new pieces that are getting attention. The ultramodern, ultra-slim Altiplano has also become a coveted collector model. Known for its razor thinness, the model’s latest feat is a flying tourbillon set within a case measuring just 2 mm—proof that the company can deliver both technical and design prowess. 

Piaget’s 150th anniversary this year will not only mark a century and a half of watchmaking expertise but will also highlight its new direction. A team with an entirely fresh perspective has been assembled under CEO Benjamin Comar, who took over the helm at the house in 2021. One of those new hires is Fatti Laleh , international director of communications and image, who was hired in 2022 from Baron & Baron , one of the fashion world’s most influential creative agencies. She’s already bringing an outsider’s take by tapping fashion photographer Brigitte Niedermair for Piaget’s upcoming ad campaign, which will feature real people alongside stories focused on the company’s heritage. 

“The power of the aesthetic goes miles,” Laleh says. “I still have arguments with the team where I refuse to change an image because I know it will be outside of their comfort zone, but I know it will work.” Yet at the same time, she admits that what’s happening in the secondary market is also a driving influence. “The sharing of knowledge from the community of collectors gives the people on the inside [of the brand] the passion and the belief to keep going.”

Wedding season is very nearly upon us — with many people already planning ahead for the spring, summer and even fall months.

With the prices of such luxury experiences as travel, wedding attire and gift-giving still rising, a new debate has hit the internet. 

Do you need to send a gift to the newlyweds if you aren’t attending their wedding? 

Users have gone on the subreddit thread “r/wedding” over the years to seek advice — and to voice their opinions. 

One user took a stance on the matter when declining a wedding invite, telling the Reddit community that a gift should not be a requirement. 

“If you’re not attending, any monetary gift is a bonus and not a requirement,” said user “Serious-Yam6730.”

Another user wrote, “If you’re not attending, then any kind of gift is very generous. We’re in the U.K. and the only gifts sent to us by people not attending were from those who live overseas,” according to user “ki5aca.”

Although many social media posters agreed that sending a gift is the polite thing to do assuming people have the monetary means to do so, many also said it isn’t a necessity for those not attending the wedding.

“I don’t expect anything from people that aren’t coming,” wrote “metsgirl289” — presumably a bride-to-be.

Etiquette expert weighs in

Florida-based etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore told Fox News Digital it’s always a kind gesture to send a gift, even if you’re skipping the event. 

“It’s considered thoughtful to send a gift even if you can’t attend the wedding,” she said this week.

“This gesture shows your love and friendship and honors the couple’s special day,” she said.

Whitmore said if finances are a concern when it comes to giving something, then there is another way to go.

“If you’re not close to the couple, or if sending a gift would be a financial strain, send a heartfelt card with your best wishes instead,” she suggested. 

If you do choose to send a gift regardless of whether you attend the wedding, Whitmore said the amount spent should depend on your relationship with the couple and your personal budget. 

“A common approach is to cover the cost of your plate at the wedding, but this is no longer valid since most people have no idea what their meal (and drinks) might cost,” she noted. 

She suggested a guideline of spending $25-$50 per wedding gift for a distant relative or acquaintance, $50-$150 on a gift for a friend or relative, and $100-$200 or more on a close friend or close relative who is getting married. 

Whitmore also noted it’s courtesy to send the wedding gift to the couple’s home before the wedding day or up to a month after the event. 

“If this is a second (or third) wedding for the couple, they may insist that their guests do not bring a gift,” she also noted.

How to choose the best pet carrier

There are a few major points to consider when choosing a carrier that will serve as your pet's safe space during a flight:

Size: Selecting the right carrier size for your pet is essential not only for your pets' comfort but also for their safety, according to Sara Hogan, hospital manager at Clarendon Animal Care in Virginia. "Please ensure the measurements for your carrier meet a standard that allows for your pet to comfortably turn around AND lay down," she says. But be aware that if the carrier is too large for your furry friend, they could end up injured in transit. The best way to determine the right size is to take measurements of your pet; to be as precise as possible, use the IATA's formula .

Keep in mind that only carriers able to fit under the seat in front of you are allowed in the plane cabin – a space that will vary by airline. Consult the next section on airline policies for more information.

Airflow: Don't underestimate the importance of adequate airflow. "Carriers and crates really need to have proper ventilation for short or long-term travel," Hogan says. "There IS a difference between taking your pet down the street to a friend's house or the vet and taking your pet on a trip with any sort of additional time involved."

Stability: Check the quality of all the zippers and materials − you want this to be an escape-proof carrier, and any malfunction can put your pet at risk. "If something has previously broken or fallen off the carrier or crate look to replace the piece or the entire crate/carrier," Hogan advises.

Soft-sided vs. hard-sided: If your pet is small enough to fly in the cabin, most airlines highly recommend a soft-sided carrier, which gives the most flexibility. Airlines are often slightly more lenient with the dimensions for soft-sided carriers in the cabin as long as they are able to fit underneath the seat without blocking the aisle of the airplane. Another bonus: Soft pet carriers often come with removable fleece bedding for extra comfort.

Be aware, too, that most major airlines based in the U.S. do not offer an option to transport animals in cargo.

How to prepare to fly with a pet

Help your pet acclimate.

When preparing to travel with your furry companion, planning ahead is key, especially if your pet isn't used to being confined in a crate or carrier. "I recommend buying the carrier as far in advance of travel as possible to allow your dog to become comfortable relaxing in the carrier in a familiar home environment before traveling," says Amanda Farah, CPDT-KA, national training and behavior coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society.

Some pets are sensitive to loud noises, so one way to prepare them for the journey is by playing recordings of sounds they might encounter in transit, Farah says. "I'd say a good general rule is that because so much of what they encounter during air travel will be new and potentially stressful, you should familiarize them to many factors as possible in the weeks or even months leading up to travel."

Book your travel far in advance

Keep in mind that airlines limit the number of pets allowed on a flight, so book early and try to secure a direct flight to cut down on travel time.

Familiarize yourself with your departure airport

Before you set off on your journey, familiarize yourself with the airport you're departing from – such as where to find a pet relief area – and how to go through security with a pet in tow. For example, you must never place your pet on the security conveyor belt (only the empty carrier goes through the X-ray tunnel).

Research your destination

This is a crucial step. Some countries will not allow pets in at all, while other destinations (such as Hawaii) may have strict rules about rabies vaccines or require all animals to travel in cargo. Christine Barton, a veterinarian with The Vets , recommends checking the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website to learn about requirements for health certificates, vaccines and more.

Other considerations will depend on what type of vacation you're planning; if it involves hiking or camping with your dog, Barton suggests checking the expected weather, making a small emergency kit for you and your pet, and considering a GPS tracker for remote areas. Wherever you're headed, locate the closest emergency animal hospital just in case and make sure to book pet-friendly accommodations .

Consult your vet

Once you've done your research, your veterinarian can help ensure your pet has everything you both need to travel, such as microchipping, required or recommended vaccines (and proof of them), testing, and health records, Barton says. A vet can also address any health concerns. "Doctors can discuss risks, precautions, and things to monitor while traveling," Barton explains, adding that you should make sure your pet is up to date on needed preventive medications, such as treatment for fleas or heartworm.

If your furry friend struggles with anxiety, your vet can prescribe them a medication to make the journey less stressful for both of you. "Talk to your veterinarian before administering any sort of medication to your pet, but definitely consider it for future travel," Hogan says.

A carrier being "airline-approved" typically means it adheres to the airline's size requirements, is leakproof, provides adequate airflow and keeps your pet securely inside.

You can find a pet carrier on wheels, such as the  Snoozer 4-in-1 Roll Around Pet Carrier  or the  SportPet Rolling Plastic Kennel , but keep in mind that most wheeled pet carriers are too large to fit under the seat on most airlines, even with detachable wheels. Wheeled options can make your furry friend easier for you to transport, but they also tend to make for a bumpy ride for your pet, so consider carefully whether a carrier on wheels is right for your cat or dog, especially if they're easily frightened.

Most major airlines in the U.S. do not allow pets to travel in cargo; some, like American Airlines, only offer this service for active military or diplomatic personnel. Of the major U.S. airlines, only Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines currently accept animals in the cargo hold, so keep that in mind if you have a medium or large dog – or if your intended destination does not welcome in-cabin pets.

Most animals who fly in the cargo hold are fine, but there's still a risk of your pet being killed, injured or lost, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The most common dangers are excessively hot or cold temperatures, poorly ventilated crates, and rough handling. Be sure to follow all IATA guidelines for cargo crates to ensure your pet's safety. Before you book a flight, you may also want to research the airline's history with companion animals in the cargo hold.

The kennel you choose for cargo travel must allow your pet enough room to stand, sit upright, turn around while standing and lie in a natural position, according to the IATA. Carriers must made of rigid materials and include a solid roof, a leakproof base, a door with well-maintained hardware, working handles and ventilation on all four sides. Labels that say "Live Animal" and "This Way Up" are also required by the IATA.

A water dish must be securely affixed to the inside of the carrier, with open access for your pet to drink and for someone to refill it from the outside without opening the crate. A food container can either be inside the carrier if it's sealed or attached to the outside.

A pet carrier usually counts as either a personal item or a carry-on. Depending on the airline policy, you may be able to bring either a personal item or a carry-on bag (not both) in addition to your carrier. Check your airline's carry-on luggage allowance and pet policy to see what you can bring.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old to travel, but airlines may impose their own age restrictions on top of that. On Delta, for example, companion animals must be at least 10 weeks old for domestic flights. United Airlines says your pet should be at least 4 months old for international travel to comply with rabies vaccine requirements.

Your furry friend will incur certain fees for flying, but the cost will vary by airline. American Airlines, as an example, charges a $125 service fee for a carry-on pet, while Allegiant's fee is $50. Cargo fees may depend on trip details: Hawaiian Airlines charges $60 in fees for domestic flights and $225 for flights between Hawaii and North America, while the cargo fee on Alaska Airlines is $100. Service animals typically fly at no charge as long as they meet the airline's requirements.

It depends on your pet, according to Hogan. "If they're quite anxious you may want to offer food with a bit more advanced time prior to the flight to avoid vomiting in the carrier or on themselves, however, not too much time where they'll be hungry throughout the travel day," she advises. "Water is important to offer as often as possible in any setting. Access to using the bathroom more than once prior to travel is also advised so as not to miss an opportunity for output!"

Conveniently, some airports may have pet relief areas your dog can use either before or after you go through security, but that's something you'll have to research beforehand.
