Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity
The overall disruption in the tourism sector brought about by COVID-19, provides an opportunity to redefine and recalibrate the direction and narratives of tourism investments for a more sustainable future for the People, the Planet, and prosperity.
This World Tourism Day 2023 , the UNWTO , under the theme “Tourism and green investment” highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for the Sustainable Development Goals , the UN roadmap for a better world by 2030. Now is the time for new and innovative solutions, not just traditional investments that promote and underpin economic growth and productivity.
Visit the World Tourism Organization’s website
The UN World Tourism Organization has prepared a website and digital materials for social networks. Let’s all contribute to promote tourism investments focused on achieving a better world for the benefit of all.
How tourism should invest to contribute to the SDGs
The possibilities of strategic investment for this triple dimension are immense:
For the People by investing in education and skills
Looking ahead, the global tourism workforce will require millions of hospitality graduates annually between now and 2030 and a further 800,000 jobs a year will require specific vocational training. For these reasons, we need to invest in people, as they are the foundation of tourism so that all those who wish to be part of the sector have the same opportunities to access quality tourism training, anywhere in the world.
For the Planet by investing in sustainable infrastructure and accelerating green transformation
Looking into the future, the need to reduce emissions provides an investment opportunity of $24.7 trillion in the green buildings sector of emerging market cities by 2030, in which hotels, resorts, and restaurants account for $1.5 trillion. In addition, tourism faces a lot more investment opportunities related to new solutions and technologies to decarbonize the sector as well as to ensure climate-resilient infrastructure through adaptation solutions.
For Prosperity by investing in innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship
Digitalization and innovation programs are a strategic priority to support particularly young people and women, which are critical to upskill the tourism sector’s workforce. Moreover, the global need to increase investments in programs that support and incentivize entrepreneurship and generate opportunities for innovations is highly need it in the tourism sector.
In order to succeed, let’s make this World Tourism Day a call to action to the international community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy .
What is the Glasgow Declaration?
The Glasgow Declaration is a compromise to accelerate climate action in tourism and to secure strong commitments to support the global goals to halve emissions over the next decade and reach Net Zero emissions as soon as possible before 2050. Over 450 organizations have become signatories of this declaration.
Did you know?
- Tourism employs one in every ten people on Earth.
- Tourism in rural areas can particularly benefit traditionally disadvantaged groups such as women - who make up 54% of the workforce in the tourism sector compared to 39% for the whole economy - youth and Indigenous people.
- In emerging destinations, 50% of young people are unable to work in tourism due to a lack of opportunity, resources, or access to academic training.

Why do we mark International Days?
International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances .

Celebrated on 27 September with the theme of “Tourism and Rural Development”, this year’s international day of observation comes at a critical moment, as countries around the world look to tourism to drive recovery, including in rural communities where the sector is a leading employer and economic pillar.
The 2020 edition also comes as governments look to the sector to drive recovery from the effects of the pandemic and with the enhanced recognition of tourism at the highest United Nations level. This was most notably illustrated with the recent release of a landmark Policy Brief on tourism from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in which he explained that “for rural communities, indigenous peoples and many other historically marginalized populations, tourism has been a vehicle for integration, empowerment and generating income.”

World Tourism Day 2020: Global community unites to celebrate travel and rural development
The 2020 edition of World Tourism Day will celebrate the unique role that tourism plays in providing opportunities outside of big cities and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world.
Celebrated on 27 September with the theme of ‘Tourism and Rural Development’, this year’s international day of observation comes at a critical moment, as countries around the world look to tourism to drive recovery, including in rural communities where the sector is a leading employer and economic pillar.
The 2020 edition also comes as governments look to the sector to drive recovery from the effects of the pandemic and with the enhanced recognition of tourism at the highest United Nations level. This was most notably illustrated with the recent release of a landmark Policy Brief on tourism from UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres in which he explained that for rural communities, indigenous peoples and many other historically marginalized populations, tourism has been a vehicle for integration, empowerment and generating income.
For the first time in the 40-year history of World Tourism Day, the official celebration will not be hosted by a single member state of the United Nations specialized agency. Instead, nations from the Mercosur bloc (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, with Chile joining with observer status) will serve as joint hosts. This co-hosting agreement exemplifies the spirit of international solidarity that runs through tourism and which UNWTO has recognised as essential for recovery.
UNWTO secretary-general Zurab Pololikashvili said: “All around the world, tourism empowers rural communities, providing jobs and opportunity, most notably for women and youth. Tourism also enables rural communities to hold onto their unique cultural heritage and traditions, and the sector is vital for safeguarding habitat and endangered species. This World Tourism Day is a chance to recognize the role tourism plays outside of major cities and its ability to build a better future for all.”
World Tourism Day 2020 will once again be celebrated by UNWTO’s member states in all global regions as well as by cities and other destinations and by private sector organizations and individual tourists. It comes as communities in rural areas also struggle with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. These communities are usually much less-prepared to deal with the short and longer-term impacts of the crisis. This is due to a number of factors, including their aging populations, lower income levels and the continuing ‘digital divide’. Tourism offers a solution to all of these challenges.

World Tourism Day 2020: History, significance and theme
This year’s international day of observation comes at a critical moment, as countries around the world look to tourism to drive recovery.
World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on the 27th of September. The industry benefits entire families and communities, and women's lives are intrinsically linked to this sector. Data from the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) shows that 100 to 120 million direct tourism jobs are at risk. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) forecasts a loss of 1.5 to 2.8 per cent of global GDP. Check the last Secretary General's policy brief about the impact of the pandemic on tourism and the roadmap towards a more sustainable and inclusive tourism sector.
"Tourism helps rural communities hold onto their unique natural and cultural heritage, supporting conservation projects, including those safeguarding endangered species, lost traditions or flavours," says Zurab Pololikashvili, the UNWTO Secretary-General.
Significance and Theme for 2020 on World Tourism Day: The 2020 edition of World Tourism Day, with the theme of “Tourism and Rural Development”, will celebrate the unique role that tourism plays in providing opportunities outside of big cities and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world.
The United Nations is aware that tourism has been among the hardest hit of all sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic. No country has been unaffected. Restrictions on travel and a sudden drop in consumer demand have led to an unprecedented fall in international tourism numbers, which in turn have led to economic loss and the loss of jobs.
Women, youth, and workers in the informal economy are the most at risk from tourism sector job losses and business closures due to the pandemic. At the same time, the destinations most reliant on tourism for jobs and economic growth are likely to be the hardest hit.
History and significance of World Tourism Day: Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observances on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism .
Tourism sector in India: The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a crippling blow to the Indian travel and tourism industry and the entire value chain linked to the sector is likely to lose around Rs 5 lakh crore or USD 65.57 billion, according to a study by industry chamber CII and hospitality consulting firm Hotelivate.
The organised sector alone is likely to lose USD 25 billion. The figures are quite alarming and the industry needs immediate measures for survival, according to the CII-Hotelivate report.
"This is one of the worst crises ever to hit the Indian tourism industry impacting all its geographical segments - inbound, outbound and domestic, almost all tourism verticals - leisure, adventure, heritage, MICE, cruise, corporate and niche segments," it said.
T rained professionals in the Tourism Sector: Job searches for roles in the hospitality and tourism sector have been on the rise since May, coinciding with the easing of lockdown measures across the country, says a report. Searches by job seekers saw a 30 per cent increase between May and August 2020, according to a report by global job site Indeed.
With 40 million jobs at stake and 15 Lakh Cr losses to the hospitality industry. Govt is setting its bets on reviving the tourism industry. The tourism task force has been set up by the Modi Govt to revive the sector, and a high-level inter-ministerial meeting has been scheduled on this very subject. On top of the agenda, Govt plans to promote pilgrimage sites and Buddhist circuit with better air connectivity under Udan. Govt also plans to promote Ladakh as a key tourism hotspot with direct flights from Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and other parts from North India.

- Celebrating World Tourism Day 2020
Travelling helps us to relax, detoxify our minds and achieve peace from within. Travelling to different destinations – rural ones, in particular – helps us enjoy natural and cultural heritage, meet new people and delight in the company of local communities. So let’s celebrate the ISO standards that make it all possible on World Tourism Day 2020, which is taking place on this September 27.
This year’s World Tourism Day celebrates the unique role that tourism plays in providing opportunities outside of big cities and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world. Under the theme “Tourism and Rural Development”, this year’s international day comes at a critical moment, as countries around the world look to revive their tourism industry, including in rural communities where the sector is a leading employer and economic pillar.
But how can ISO bring clarity and contribute to this development?
ISO has a number of International Standards that serve as important tools to help key players in the tourism industry. These include standards developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 228 , Tourism and related services . With more than 30 standards under its belt, the committee works to improve tourist services in such areas as protected natural environments, sustainable management systems for accommodation facilities as well as adventure and industrial tourism.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization ( UNWTO ), “Tourism and Rural Development” is more relevant than ever as the global tourism sector faces up to the COVID-19 pandemic. These communities are usually much less prepared to deal with the short- and longer-term impacts of the crisis. This is due to a number of factors, including their ageing populations, lower income levels and the continuing “digital divide”. Tourism offers a solution to all of these challenges.
Natalia Ortiz de Zárate, Committee Manager of ISO/TC 228, explains: “World Tourism Day is the day to draw attention to how tourism can improve our world. It also empowers rural communities, with a potential to create jobs and opportunities for all those in need. ISO standards play a key role. Together, we can keep the rural communities alive!”
This co-hosting agreement exemplifies the spirit of international solidarity that runs through tourism and which UNWTO has recognized as essential for recovery.

Restrictions on travel and a drop in consumer demand have led to an unprecedented fall in international tourism numbers, which in turn have led to economic loss and the loss of jobs.
The theme of World Tourism Day 2020:
The theme of the 2020 edition of World Tourism Day is 'Tourism and Rural Development'. It aims to celebrate the role played by tourism in providing opportunities outside of big cities and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world.
"Development through tourism can keep rural communities alive. Tourism is a lifeline, offering young people a chance to earn a living without having to migrate either within their home countries or abroad," UN said.
Speaking on the occasion, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that tourism has suffered enormously during the COVID-19 pandemic and safe restart of tourism is essential.
"Some 120 million jobs are at risk. The impacts could lead to the loss of between 1.5 and 2.8 percent of the global GDP. This will particularly affect the most vulnerable countries, where tourism can represent between 30 and 80 per cent of exports," he said.
In this most challenging year, let us focus on tourism’s importance for people living in rural areas, so we can deliver on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals, Guterres added.

Instead, nations from the Mercosur bloc (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, with Chile joining with observer status) will serve as joint hosts.
"This co-hosting agreement exemplifies the spirit of international solidarity which UNWTO has recognized as essential for recovery. Cross-border cooperation reflects the current need for international solidarity and cooperation. This is especially true for tourism, working together towards a common goal," UN said in a statement.

Everything You Need to Know About Earth Day 2024
By Emily Chan
As the climate crisis becomes ever more serious, each Earth Day that comes along takes on extra significance. Established in 1970 in the US, the annual event brings together millions of people from around the world in support of the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet.
Earth Day 2024 comes as a worrying new report found that global concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—the top three heat-trapping gases—reached a record high again in 2023. Meanwhile, a separate study found that Antarctica saw an astonishing rise of 38.5 degrees Celsius above its average seasonal temperature back in 2022, leading to major concerns about the alarming rate at which global warming is affecting our planet.
That’s why it’s more important than ever that Earth Day is seen as a rallying cry for real action on the climate crisis. Want to ensure that you play your part? Here’s everything you need to know.
What is Earth Day?
Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.
When is Earth Day 2024?
Earth Day takes place on April 22 every year, but the entire month of April (sometimes called Earth Month)—and especially the week running up to Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week)—is a time when environmental issues take center stage.
Why is Earth Day on April 22?
Earth Day was the brainchild of US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson, following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California . He came up with the idea of having college teach-ins to highlight the importance of clean air and water, with April 22 chosen as a convenient date between Spring Break and finals.
Organizers decided to name the date Earth Day , with the first event in 1970 leading to an astonishing 20 million people across the US taking to the streets—around 10 percent of the country’s population at the time. The event undoubtedly had a major impact, with President Richard Nixon creating the Environmental Protection Agency just months later in December 1970, as well as signing the Clean Air Act.
Earth Day later became an international campaign in 1990, when environmental activists asked one of the original organizers, Denis Hayes , to help create another event to spotlight the ecological challenges facing our planet.
What is the Earth Day 2024 theme?
The theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet v Plastics , highlighting the fact that 380 million tonnes of plastic are now produced every year—while only 9 percent of plastic ever produced has been recycled. Campaigners are now calling for a 60 percent reduction in plastic by 2040. “The Planet v Plastics campaign is a call to arms, a demand that we act now to end the scourge of plastics and safeguard the health of every living being upon our planet,” Kathleen Rogers, president of Earthday.org, explains.
How can you celebrate Earth Day?
There are thousands of events taking place around the world this Earth Day. You can find out what’s happening near you via this map , or even create your own event. Organizers have put together a number of ideas for celebrating Earth Day via its handy action tool kit , from avoiding single-use plastic to taking part in The Great Global Cleanup campaign. Other suggestions include signing the Global Plastics Treaty petition and saying no to fast fashion, the majority of which is made from plastic.
What else can you do to help the planet?
Of course, at Vogue we believe that every day should be Earth Day, so it’s vital that we continue to take action throughout the whole year. If you want to find out more about the challenges we’re facing, here are the books to read , the documentaries to watch, and the activists to follow .

Beyond that, here are some other ways you can live more sustainably , including making more eco-friendly fashion choices, switching to renewable energy, flying less, and eating less meat, fish, and dairy. You can also join a local campaign group, write to your politicians, and donate to environmental charities such as Greenpeace , 350.org, and Rainforest Alliance.
