Zip Line Canopy Tours in New England

You need a heart for adventure – but not necessarily a body of an athlete – to enjoy the thrill of zooming through the treetops and clambering across aerial suspension bridges at New England’s zip lines. In just a handful of years, these playgrounds in the tree canopy have sprung up across New England, serving people’s desire to unleash that inner Tarzan. Guides convey you safely along zip lines, through elevated obstacle courses, and across chattering rope and suspended bridges. Really fun for all averagely fit people as long as you carry enough weight to propel you (sorry, babies and toddlers). A great thing to do on a family getaway .

The Best Ziplines in New England

zip line tours new england

Kim Knox Beckius

What makes the Bretton Woods Canopy Tour at the Omni Mount Washington Resort the most amazing zipline experience in New England? Its location, location, location—in the breathtaking White Mountains of New Hampshire. Plus, the safety of the course's redundant dual-cable construction, the reassurance and good humor of well-trained Canopy Tour guides, and the impressive fact that this wild sky ride operates winter, spring, summer, and fall: What a way to leaf peep in a state known for impressive fall foliage!

There are longer ziplining courses in New Hampshire, but for pure exhilaration and scenic splendor, the Bretton Woods Canopy Tour is your best bet. See what it's like to soar through the treetops of an old-growth forest in this video of the canopy tour experience.

Candid Canopy Tour Advice

I'll admit:  I was the chicken in my ziplining tour group! To make matters worse, I slipped on a loose rock while hiking between ziplines and bloodied and muddied myself. Still, this middle-aged mom was proud that she conquered her nerves and took on this three-and-a-half-hour course, which features two sky bridges, three rappels, and 10 ziplines.

The Bretton Woods Canopy Tour's signature zipline, known as the K2, runs 900 feet at a height of 165 feet above the valley floor. If you have a serious fear of heights, this is definitely not an adventure for you. To zipline, you must be at least 12 years old and weigh between 90 and 250 pounds. There are a few other restrictions , but essentially, "Anybody can do it," said Bretton Woods Ski Area Director Chris Ellms. Reservations, which are required, may be made by calling 603-278-4ZIP (4947).

A few words of advice:  Wear sturdy hiking shoes (or boots in winter): There's more walking between ziplines than you might anticipate. Leave your cell phone behind, but bring a small camera that can be tethered to your harness and tucked inside your shirt or jacket.

There's an outhouse halfway through the tour, but be sure to use the restrooms at the Bretton Woods Base Lodge before you depart for ground school. When you reach the Williwaw Racing Zip at the end of the course, tilt your head as far away from the line as you can. Trust your guides. Laugh at their jokes. And, as Ellms reminded group members several times, don't forget to "look around and understand the environment that you're in" as you're hurtling toward the next platform. He confirms the Canopy Tour is "stunning in the fall."

Come explore the terrain of this beautiful New England ski resort via one scenic chair lift ride, and two unique ZipTour® zip line spans. The second span of the ZipTour® travels a monstrous distance of over 5,523 ft. and is the reason why we call it… the ‘CATAMONSTER’ zip. It is over a mile long!

Guests then ride the Ridge Quad Lift to the top of the mountain to continue the ZipTour®.

The Ridge Zip is almost 1,000 ft long and traverses from the mountain top to the start of the “Catapult” ski trail, parallel to the “Ridge Run” ski trail. The Ridge Zip is a great warm up before moving onto the Catamonster Zip .

Once customers complete the Ridge Zip , a short hike leads to the top of the Catamonster Zip , now the longest zip line in the USA. The top tower of the Catamonster Zip offers a tri-state view of New York, Massachusetts and Vermont! It is breathtaking! You can also see the 3,489-foot Mount Greylock, which is the highest point in Massachusetts. The Catamonster Zip begins at the top of the mountain, and in one span plummets all the way to the bottom of the resort, over the new snowmaking pond and lands just west of the base area. It can take anywhere from 2-3 minutes to ride the Catamonster Zip, and it is so exciting!

A short shuttle back to the Main Lodge completes the ZipTour® zip line adventure and aerial exploration of the Catamount Mountain Resort. If you are looking for things to do in the Hillsdale NY and Great Barrington MA area, be sure to visit to the Catamount Mountain Resort and try the ZipTour®!

Valley Jump Tour

The most thrilling zip line excursion is called the Valley Jump Tour. The length of the zip lines varies from 1000′ to 2,600′, and they are around 200′ above the ground.

Using six fantastic zip lines connected by spectacular platforms and overlooking incredible vistas, and a roundtrip chairlift ride, you may zip across the top of the Deerfield River Valley.

To guarantee that all group arrangements are handled, arrive 30 minutes ahead of time and chat with customer service. Here, you’ll get to meet your adventure guides, and gear up!

The 2,300-foot X1 zip line, known as the “eXtreme” zip line, is the initial dual-zip competition cable. Riders will go at speeds of 60 MPH and fly 150′ in the air. Then, they will have to climb for 5 to 10 minutes to reach the summit of a nearby mountain after landing across the valley.

If you’re looking for even more of an adrenaline rush, you can hop on the zipline called X2, or “eXtreme” zip 2. The views from this zip line are excellent, especially amid the fall foliage. This zip line, which is 2,600 feet long and 200 feet in the air is truly an experience of a lifetime.

Mountain Top Tour

If you want something a little more relaxing, but still fun, take this tour. First you will go to Zip 1, the beginner zip, which places you on Platform 1 with a view of the Deerfield River Valley, following a picturesque chairlift trip to the summit.

As you traverse the mountain’s summit from there, various platforms and ground landings are ready for you. The tour culminates with a downhill chairlift ride to the valley.

The Mountain Top Tour is famous for larger groups, including ones such as camps for kids, boy scouts and girl scouts, as well as youth groups. This intermediate experience is frequently chosen as the ideal option for individuals who have never been on a zip line.

Base Area Tour

Before attempting the long lines, zip twice through the two-line circuit at the bottom of the ski area to get a thrilling taste of zip lining.

At the base of Berkshire East Ski Resort, on the flats, is where you’ll find the Base Area Tour. This tour, which consists of two sets of twin racing cables that are 380′ and 570′ long, connects three elevated platforms and is conveniently visible from the Main Lodge.

For those unsure about the longer trips, families with children, or those short on time, this course offers an excellent orientation to zipping at a low price.
