List of Led Zeppelin concert tours

33 tours led zeppelin

From September 1968 until the summer of 1980, English rock band Led Zeppelin were one of the world's most popular live music acts, performing hundreds of sold-out concerts around the world.

Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Led Zeppelin made numerous concert tours of the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe in particular. They performed over 600 concerts, initially playing small clubs and ballrooms and then, as their popularity increased, larger venues and arenas as well.

In the early years of their existence, Led Zeppelin made a concerted effort to establish themselves as a compelling live music act. As was recalled by bass player John Paul Jones :

[Led] Zeppelin was a live band and that's how we got our reputation. The press hated us in the early days. Our only way of promotion was to play a lot of live shows, especially in the UK. It used to spread by word-of-mouth.

However, though the band made several early tours of the UK, the majority of Led Zeppelin's live concerts were performed in the United States, which was settled on as the primary foundation for their fame and accomplishment. In 1969, for example, all but 33 of the band's 139 shows were performed in the U.S., and between the years 1968 and 1971 they made no fewer than nine tours of North America. "It felt like a vacuum and we'd arrived to fill it", guitarist Jimmy Page once told journalist Cameron Crowe . "It was like a tornado, and it went rolling across the country." After touring almost incessantly during its early years, Led Zeppelin later limited its tour appearances to alternating years: 1973, 1975, 1977 and 1979.

From the early 1970s, the commercial and popular drawing power of Led Zeppelin was such that the band began to embark on major stadium tours which attracted vast crowds, more than they had previously performed to. During their 1973 tour of the United States , they played to 56,800 fans at Tampa Stadium , Florida , breaking the record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. Similar crowds were drawn on Led Zeppelin's subsequent U.S. tours, and they continued to break attendance records (on April 30, 1977 they played to 76,229 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome , Michigan , a world record attendance for a solo indoor attraction). It is for these reasons that Led Zeppelin, as much as any other band or artist in this era, is credited for helping to establish what has come to be known as stadium rock . Many critics attribute the band's rapid rise as much to their tremendous appeal as a live act as they do to the quality of their studio albums.

Led Zeppelin also performed at several music festivals over the years, including the Atlanta International and the Texas International Pop Festivals in 1969, the Bath Festival of Blues in 1969 and the next one in 1970, the " Days on the Green " in Oakland, California in 1977, and the Knebworth Music Festival in 1979.

Characteristics

Led Zeppelin's reputation as a compelling live act is often attributed to the tight understanding and musical chemistry achieved between all four group members, combined with a shared willingness to try new things on-stage, which resulted in dynamic, unpredictable performances. As is noted by Led Zeppelin archivists Dave Lewis and Simon Pallett:

Led Zeppelin live was an extraordinary animal. From the very beginning no two performances were alike. Such was the creative spark between the four that the basic structures of their songs were repeatedly reworked, extended and improvised on, making their studio counterparts almost unrecognisable.

Led Zeppelin have been described as the kind of group that actually rehearsed on stage, experimenting with the reaction of the audiences to new material and letting the pieces mature through the live experience. Several tracks from their albums were debuted on stage well before their official release on vinyl . Jimmy Page himself has said that most of the band's songs were designed for live performance.

Every show we did was different. You never knew when you went onstage what you might do by the end of it ... Once a song was recorded, and it went into the set, it began to mutate. The whole improvisational aspect, the riffs coming out of the ether ... it was a magical vehicle collectively soaring into the stratosphere. And as more albums came out, the set got longer and longer.

In an interview he gave to Uncut magazine in 2005, Page elaborated:

The beauty of playing in the band was that when we went onstage we never actually knew what was going to go on within the framework of the songs. They were constantly changing. New parts would come out on the night. The spontaneity was on the level of ESP , which meant it was always exciting.

As described by Cameron Crowe, "[Led] Zeppelin live was a direct descendant from Elvis' early shows. Raw, direct, a reminder of when rock was young."

With such shared enthusiasm for playing a diverse range of musical styles coupled with their emphasis on extended improvisation, Led Zeppelin's concerts frequently extended for several hours. Recalled Jones:

Things got extended a lot to keep ourselves from going mad. Every tour we tried to cut it down, especially in the later years. We'd say we're only going to play an-hour-and-a-half. After a week, it would creep back up to two hours. By the end of the tour it's three hours!

After their 1977 tour of the U.S. — their last major tour — the band chose to abandon much of the "mystical" image that surrounded them up to that point. Instead members would wear ordinary street clothes during their concerts and the setlist was toned down by excluding long, elaborate solo numbers like Bonham's "Moby Dick" and Page's trademark bowed guitar solo accompanied by a laser show.

Recordings and live concert footage

Many of the band's shows have been preserved as Led Zeppelin bootleg recordings , which continue to be prized by collectors and fans. In addition, footage of Led Zeppelin concerts has been released officially on the band's 1973 concert film The Song Remains the Same , and on the Led Zeppelin DVD (2003). However, unlike other artists of the era such as The Who and The Rolling Stones , comparatively little official concert footage exists of Led Zeppelin. This is largely because of the successful efforts of manager Peter Grant to limit the exposure of the band to television appearances, in order to encourage fans who wanted to see the band to attend Led Zeppelin concerts. Of the few professionally shot concerts the band did, (excluding their July 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden on The Song Remains the Same ) six are today available to fans through bootlegs. These concerts include the last two nights of their five-concert run at Earls Court Arena in London in May 1975, their show in Seattle's Kingdome in 1977 and their two shows at Knebworth in August 1979. In addition to these, their Royal Albert Hall performance from January 1970 is available.

Concert tour chronology

Reunion concerts.

Since Led Zeppelin disbanded following the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, the three surviving members of the band have reunited publicly on-stage on just a few occasions.

  • On July 13, 1985, at the Live Aid concert at JFK Stadium , Philadelphia . Tony Thompson and Phil Collins both played drums on all three songs. For the last song, "Stairway to Heaven", Paul Martinez played bass, while John Paul Jones moved to keyboards. The band was introduced on stage by Phil Collins as "my three friends" (not as Led Zeppelin). Concert programmes did not mention the name Led Zeppelin.
  • On May 14, 1988, at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, with Bonham's son, Jason Bonham , on drums.
  • On January 12, 1995, at Led Zeppelin's induction into the United States Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Their performance included five songs and variously featured vocalist Steven Tyler and guitarists Joe Perry and Neil Young . Jason Bonham played drums on the first four songs, while Page and Plant drummer Michael Lee played them on the final song, "When The Levee Breaks".
  • On December 10, 2007, at the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert at The O 2 in London, with Jason Bonham again filling in on drums.

One of the greatest twosomes in all of rock history, robert plante and jimmy page have made their band led zeppelin iconic in all ways. The smooth and captivating skills of mr.page and the raw wild charisma that poured from mr.plantes lips have cemented them as musical history makers. From their unique sound to the drama filled lives of these true rockstars, led zeppelin has always made headlines whether for their amazing live performances and chart topping songs, or just for their wild ways. Fast riffs, slow beats, it's always a surprise when it comes to led zeppelins music bio. The slow steady beat and electric vocals like the ones in their song kashmir, show the sheer talent and songwriting ability of a truly excellent band, and the power behind robert plantes voice in stairway to heaven is enough to bring a person to tears. They made the music as real as could be, so why wouldnt you want to see them? You'd be watching a crucial part of rock history unfold before your own eyes. What else could a music lover want? You Get The Sexiest and most Raw performance of a lifetime. “There was an extraordinary amount of tension...” Inside Led Zeppelin’s final US tour

Led Zeppelin's record-breaking final run of shows coincided with trouble and tragedy

Led Zeppelin onstage in the US in 1977

The fact that Led Zeppelin ’s mode of transport for their ’77 US tour was a refitted plane that included a bar, two bedrooms, a 30-foot couch and a Hammond organ tells you where the rock legends were at by this point: this was Led Zep at the height of superstar decadence. It’s no wonder that they had money to burn. In April that year, they’d set a new world record for the largest paid attendance at a single-artist performance when they drew 76,229 people to a concert at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan, a show that grossed a massive $792,361 (also a new record). It had sold out in one day. They felt unstoppable. “I’m sure we all felt a little invincible on this tour,” Gary Carnes, head of the lighting crew, told Classic Rock ’s Steven Rosen. “By being associated with Led Zeppelin , it seemed impossible not to have a sense of power. I’m sure the band felt that way, and I know everyone on the crew had a feeling of invulnerability.”

But underneath all their material pow-wow and ticket sales, the band’s 11th and final jaunt across the States was fraught with problems. First of all, they’d had to postpone some of the dates after Robert Plant caught laryngitis a few shows in. After the second performance, in Chicago, Jimmy Page had fallen ill with what Calmes called the ”rockin’ pneumonia”. Manager Peter Grant, meanwhile, was still the band’s antagonistic rock but he himself was going through a marriage break-up.

“There was an extraordinary amount of tension at the start of that 77 tour,” Calmes recounted. “It just got off to a really negative start. It was definitely much darker than any Zeppelin tour ever before that time. Zeppelin still had their moments of greatness, but some of the shows were grinding and not very inspired.”

Jimmy Page ’s drinking was another issue. The guitarist was hitting it hard, and it was affecting his performances. “Quite often Robert would announce a song,” remembered Carnes, “and Jimmy would go: ‘Robert, how does that song go?’ And Robert would sort of turn around and hum it to him. And Jimmy would go: ‘Oh yeah, oh yeah, I got it, I got it.’ Or Robert would announce a song and Jimmy would go into the wrong song. The times when Jimmy couldn’t remember how a song went were very, very rare, but it did happen.”

The group all headed off in different directions after the arduous tour, but the worst was to come. Robert Plant had just arrived at his hotel in New Orleans when his wife rang to say that their son Karac was ill, soon calling again to say that he’d died. It was a tragedy that loomed over the band’s remaining years, a devastating end to a period that pushed Led Zeppelin to the brink.

News Report: Led Zeppelin – Rock as Extravaganza

The Stones first developed massive light and sound systems for the huge halls rock groups now play and Alice Cooper expanded the idea by turning concerts into spectacles, but nobody so far has reached the level of extravaganza shown by Led Zeppelin in concert last night at the Seattle Center Coliseum.

Smoke, fire, strobes, sparklers and rockets filled the stage at one time or another during the group’s nonstop three hours of music. Not to mention the three-story banks of lights and speakers that surrounded the four performers and the mirrored panels behind them.

And the show was so well coordinated that a tiny beam of light would land on Jimmy Page’s right hand the instant he began a guitar solo and flames leap out of canisters when Robert Plant hit a certain high note.

The sound system was such that at any point in the hall the music was visceral – it could be felt more than heard.

For me, this took some getting used to but once acclimatized it was strangely pleasurable, as if the constant vibrations activated some pleasure center.

The Led Zeppelin are one of the three or four most popular rock groups at the moment. In their current 33-city concert tour, they have already broken the national attendance record (56,000 people in Tampa; previous high was the Beatles Shea Stadium show which drew only 55,000) and have been selling out every show. Only one newspaper ad and two radio spots were necessary to sell out the Coliseum here in a few days.

This is one top group that owes its popularity to talent. Page is one of the finest electric guitarists in the world. He’s done session work for everybody from Donovan to Tony Bennett and like Hendrix, has helped expand the definitions of rock by his innovations.

Robert Plant is the greatest singer in rock, next to Little Richard, and that’s no mean feat. He can control a scream the way Leontyne Price controls an aria and it’s just as exhilarating to experience.

Of course he was helped a bit last night by the sound man who added echo, reverb and other aural tricks to augment his voice.

John Bonham, the drummer, displayed superhuman strength by lasting the full three hours without a rest, even after an energetic drum solo that must have lasted 20 minutes.

John Paul Jones, an arranger and conductor before joining the group, played bass guitar, electric organ and mellotron.

Led Zeppelin made one of their first public appearances in Seattle just before Christmas 1968 as an unknown and unannounced second-on-the-bill to Vanilla Fudge. Their first album had not yet been released and the audience wasn’t prepared for them.

I remember the Arena crowd back then paying little attention to the band’s high energized rock music and they walked off stage to more boos than applause.

What a contrast last night when the audience was almost mesmerized by the goings-on on stage and give out the longest, most deafening ovation I’ve ever heard (about 8 to 10 minutes long and at least 5 on the Richter scale).

It was quite an experience. (by Pat   Macdonald, SeattleTimes July 1973)

Moby has had a 'strange career' and he wouldn't have it any other way

bald man with short beard wears a dark suit and glasses. he holds a hand over his chest.

Moby says, "I had one of the most scary, embarrassing professional moments of my life on that tour," referencing his last Australian visit back in 2012.

The multi-million selling DJ and producer was in the country to play the now-defunct Summadayze festivals, alongside fellow party starters Snoop Dogg, Scissor Sisters, Calvin Harris and more.

"Snoop Dogg went on before me and his show was amazing," Moby recalls, speaking with Double J's Tim Shiel .

"He had maybe 15 people on stage. He played his greatest hits, and he played other people's greatest hits, there was a band and there was choreography. The audience loved him. It was one of the greatest live shows I've ever seen.

"When he was done, I was DJing. So, Snoop, and his 15-member entourage walk off stage and one little, weird DJ walks on. I was so uncomfortable.

"It was like kind of like going to see Led Zeppelin followed by their accountant playing records."

Thankfully it takes more than one awkward show to sour Moby's impression of our country, which remains one of the DJ and producer's biggest markets 35 odd years into his musical career.

"I've been to Australia probably 20 times in my life," he reflects. "The first time was very interesting, because I was playing two shows on New Year's Eve in 1994, going into 1995.

"I played at like four in the morning in Sydney, and then went to the airport, flew to Melbourne and played at, I don't know, 7:30 in the morning in Melbourne, and then flew back to New York.

"I realised I had spent more time in the air than I actually spent in Australia."

This was not especially wild by Moby's standards in the mid-1990s. As he grew to become one of the most in-demand DJs on the planet, he lived the life to match.

His memoirs — 2016's Porcelain and 2019's Then It Fell Apart — are packed with tales of intense debauchery as well as his wild work ethic, which saw him bring his music to parties the world over.

Those days, he says, are over.

"About 15 years ago, I got sober," he says.

"Once I got sober, maybe I shouldn't admit this in public, but I basically have become just like an old person. I go to sleep at 9:30 at night, I wake up at five in the morning, I go hiking, I do yoga.

"The idea of staying up all night to do anything other than watch a 30 Rock marathon seems terrible to me.

"In sobriety, my life is very healthy, but very boring and no good stories have arisen from it."

Moby is well versed in adapting to change. His musical vacillations have helped him create work that marries electronic music with indie rock, punk, and, as evidenced on his multi-platinum 1999 record Play, blues and roots.

"I've had such a strange musical background," he says.

"When I was very, very young I studied music theory and classical music. Then, when I was 14 years old, I started playing in a punk rock band. I became a hip hop DJ. I was a house music DJ… I was just doing all sorts of different things.

"But the entire time, especially when I was young, I never expected to have a career as a musician.

"I never expected to make records, let alone make records that anyone would listen to. And then, lo and behold, somehow I managed to cobble together this strange career."

Perhaps one of the strangest parts of this career came in 2021, when Moby released Reprise, his first orchestral album.

Released by esteemed, 125-year-old classical label Deutsche Gramophone, Reprise featured new arrangements of Moby songs played by the Budapest Art Orchestra, a string quartet, and guest artists like Mark Lanegan, Jim James, Gregory Porter, and Australia's own Alice Skye.

"Keep in mind Deutsche Gramophone is the oldest, most venerated record label in the world and here I am, a former punk rock kid working with an orchestra," Moby says.

"I still have a hard time making sense of the fact that this is what my life has become. I expected to be selling insurance or teaching community college part time. I certainly never expected to make orchestral records with Deutsche Gramophone."

The joyous power of house music

Moby is less surprised by the recent uptick in popularity his beloved house music has experienced in the mainstream in recent years. He was in the right place at the right time when the genre exploded for the first time and has remained in the box seat for every subsequent surge.

"I fell in love with house music in 1986, or 1987 when I first heard it, back in the days of Tracks Records, becoming friends with Frankie Knuckles, and going hanging out at [famed New Jersey haunt] Zanzibar with Tony Humphries," he remembers.

"The fact that it's never really gone away, and in fact it's bigger than ever, is both surprising and wonderful."

War, disease, political unrest, and a world more divided than it has been in decades might make for grim news bulletins, but it's in this challenging landscape that the house music's quest for euphoria thrives.

"As we all know, house music is celebratory," he says.

"It's this spirit of joy, and sensuality and celebration.

"I feel like, especially in very challenging, confusing, quasi apocalyptic times, having music that is celebratory and inclusive is almost a form of service."

Perhaps house music's greatest power is its artists reluctance to take an overt political stance, focusing instead on the broader human experience.

"Dance music in particular has never had an explicit political message, but it's almost a utopian message," Moby says.

"It's a message of inclusion, it's a message of peace. Even if it's not stated explicitly or lyrically, it's creating community, and it's creating that utopian environment.

"I am reminded of something I heard a while ago, which is that self-care is the first form of service. Meaning, you have to look after yourself. You have to take care of your health in order to be of service to anyone else. That old thing of, put your oxygen mask on your face before you try and help anyone else on an aeroplane.

"So, I do think there's a lot to be said for creating those utopian environments or even just simply utopian moments to remind people how good things could be."

Moby's new single You & Me is out now.
