Virtual Reality: Discover Vienna with the Future Bus

Dive into Vienna's history using Virtual Reality technology? Now you can with the Future Bus, which stops at important sights to bring the past to life at original settings using a VR headset.

Witness the assassination of Emperor Franz Joseph I? Look over Maria Theresa's shoulder in her study? Or perhaps go on a coach ride with Empress Sisi? All this becomes possible with the Future Bus, an exciting multi-sensory experience that plays out on multiple levels. The bus ride departs from right in front of the Albertina , behind the Vienna State Opera . But what usually happens on a normal city tour – putting on headphones, listening, and looking out of the window – takes an innovative turn on the Future Bus after the first stop.

Spectacular 360-degree view

The gong sounds, the participants put on a VR headset and dive into the history of famous Viennese places. They then become part of past epochs in a free rendering of the motto "in the thick of things, instead of just being there". Thanks to a virtual 360-degree view, Vienna's history is tangibly close – a direct and impressive encounter with the past. Because the Virtual Reality sequences are beautifully produced and have been created by professional actors, animators, directors and sound engineers. A large number of special effects also contribute to this virtual adventure.

The Ringstrasse as the central stage

The historic virtual city tour lasts one hour. It starts off along the Ringstrasse , but also visits the MuseumsQuartier , the Naschmarkt , and Schwarzenbergplatz. Tours are offered in 11 different languages. Full details on the tour can be found on the Future Bus website .

Visiting Vienna

VR tour, multimedia & immersive experiences

360 degrees VR in text form

Should you wish to sit next to Empress Elisabeth, fly above Vienna, or see what AI can do with Mozart, then I have a few suggestions for you…

  • Book a VR experience * in Vienna
  • Tours of Vienna
  • Hop on hop off buses

Indoor VR experiences

Special exhibitions, virtual reality and more.

Let us begin with some headset-based fun…

Sisi Amazing Journey sign

(Fly in a boat above Vienna)

Three indoor attractions in particular place the emphasis on virtual reality and immersion.

  • Sisi’s Amazing Journey : a two-part attraction with a documentary film about the life of Empress Elisabeth followed by a virtual reality ride on a boat.

The VR part is simply a bundle of fun; you also sit in an actual (small) boat, which moves to add another dimension to the adventure. The monarch herself serves as your fellow passenger and guide.

  • Time Travel tour : a sister attraction to the above and much more extensive. A bubbly mix of VR, 5D cinema, moving sets, animatronics and more with a little bit of history thrown in to give it a veneer of education.

This takes you through notable events or Vienna-related themes, but the focus is on the entertainment part of infotainment.

  • Schloss Schönbrunn VR experience : a 24-minute cinematic and VR experience in one of the rooms of Schönbrunn palace.

The presentation guides you across the last couple of centuries of Habsburg personalities, with Empress Elisabeth playing a big part (yep, she’s popular!)

(All three of these VR attractions are included in a Go City All-Inclusive or Explorer Pass for Vienna at the time of writing.)

The Future Tour bus

(Bus and VR tour in one)

These tours combine a real trip around Vienna sights with VR elements at particular stops.

  • Future Bus : I enjoyed this one. A small tour bus takes you around some of the more prominent central locations.

At selected stops, you don your headset to find yourself whisked up into the air or transported back to historical scenes created through both animation technology and reenactments with real actors.

  • VR Tours Vienna *: a roughly two-hour walking tour I hope to get to soon (I’ve seen them out and about).

You’re escorted through the city centre, stopping at various key locations to put on a headset and view important historical events unfolding around you at the same spot via VR animations. Includes a multilingual audioguide.

Multimedia & immersive

Front of the Technical Museum

(A paradise for button pressers)

Various attractions and temporary exhibitions now involve clever use of multimedia, VR elements, AI, and/or other technologies to create more immersive experiences.

  • Mythos Mozart : a recent addition to the Vienna landscape with five large rooms featuring unique audiovisual environments around Mozart’s life and music.

Art meets music meets technology meets AI in dynamic wall and floor projections, an interactive performance of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik , and more.

  • The House of Music : has various interactive stations. You can create your own Clong sound creature using a VR headset, for example, or conduct an orchestra that responds to your baton movements.

I should add that members of that orchestra make dismissive comments should your efforts as a conductor fail to live up to their expectations. The cheek of it.

  • The Technisches Museum : the Vienna Museum of Science and Technology has an awful lot of buttons to press and levers to pull (to put it in old-fashioned terms).

Again, numerous interactive stations…from wheelchair simulators to cable car rides.

  • The Retro Gaming Museum : a chronology of gaming tech that takes you from the early days of clunky monitors and cables through to today’s consoles.

You can try out some of the equipment and associated games. Controlling the Pong paddle doesn’t quite count as a full immersive experience, but a couple of VR headsets let you enter the modern era of the video game world.

  • Madame Tussauds : the famous wax museum has interactive sections

Take a VR journey inside a 1976 Mercedes 200 with the “Bergdoktor” (from the TV series) as your driver. Or experience a ski jump alongside Austrian ski star, Stefan Kraft.

View of the Immersive Tutankhamen exhibition

(View of part of the Tutankhamen experience; press photo © Philipp Lipiarski)

Vienna has become a stop for some of the immersive and/or interactive exhibitions that now tour the world. For example, the Marx Halle hosts:

  • Tutankhamen *: another multimedia immersive trip, this time through ancient Egypt. English speakers can borrow headphones for audio, and QR codes provide access to English versions of display text (October 19th, 2023 to April 21st, 2024)

P.S. A fair few places offer what we might call a virtual tour of Vienna or of specific locations within the city without the need to leave your home. Here some suggestions .

Unique Interactive tour in Vienna

Explore Vienna ‘ s highlights with virtual reality on a Interactive tour

VIRTUAL REALITY

The interactive bus tour in vienna.

FutureBus Tours combines 3 elements- a classic bus tour, an audio guide and a virtual reality experience.

In our comfortable purple bus you will be able to look through the windows and enjoy many of Vienna’s magnificent buildings, churches and monuments. The places you will see are the most popular tourist attractions of the Austrian capital.  You will see them all in one hour. Instead of walking around in the summer’s heat or winter’s rain, you will enjoy them from our comfortable, air conditioned bus.

Throughout the tour you will be accompanied by an audio guide. Unlike other bus tours, the stories you will hear are connected to one another in a complete journey from start to finish. You won’t hear boring stories about the monuments. Instead, you will learn more about the development of the city through the centuries, about the people who lived, worked and expanded Vienna and the battles they had to fight to defend it from countless enemies. To complete the experience, you will witness the events through our virtual reality glasses in four stations during this Interactive tour.

Bus tour

Route of our Interactive tour

The tour will take you through 3 different districts and many important streets. We will begin at Albertinaplatz, near the very heart of Vienna’s inner city. Afterwards, we will drive along the famous Ring road where many of Vienna’s most iconic buildings are located. The bus tour will be continued by driving near important places such as Museumsquartier, Naschmarkt and Schwarzenbergplatz before returning to the Opera building and to our starting point.

Virtual Reality Experience

We bet you are curious as to what you are going to see in this unique virtual reality experience! Well, we aren’t going to reveal the stories but we can tell you that what you are about to witness is acted by real actors and reenactors.

One thing you should keep in mind- the virtual reality experience is 360 degrees which means you should not only look forward or to your sides but also backwards. Things are going to happen all around you and so look everywhere to make sure you capture and experience it all.

To enjoy the virtual reality experience you will wear our state of the art glasses. At the beginning of the tour you will receive audio instructions as to how to wear them. You will be told to look forward at the very beginning so that the glasses will be calibrated with your surroundings. We made sure to create the experience so that you won’t get dizzy after each virtual reality stop, so in case that was a concern, don’t worry, we thought exactly about you.

Opera in 360 degrees

The heart of Vienna, the city of music, beats in the Vienna State Opera, one of the world's leading opera stages. Now you can feel this heartbeat: the VR experience Vienna State Opera VR - Beyond the Scenes offers unprecedented insights into the opera house. Let's dive into the world of opera, in front of and behind the scenes, including areas that are not normally accessible.

The virtual tour casts the architectural Neo-Renaissance jewel in the right light. And does so from a 360-degree perspective. Let's accompany a dancer high above the rooftops of Vienna, inside in the legendary tea salon, and on a "stage ride" with two colleagues. Let's watch a flute player in the magnificent staircase. Let's listen spellbound to opera star Valentina Naforniță. The soprano sings in the splendid salon, where opera guests normally raise a toast during the intermission. Amazingly, even vacuum cleaners are musically involved in the production.

One's own point of view guides the exciting foray through the opera – depending on the path and perspective we choose.

Let's go on a voyage of discovery!

Here's how it works: simply swipe through the running movie with the mouse on your computer and be amazed. You can view the 360-degree video from different angles. If you have VR glasses, simply put them on. On your smartphone: open the YouTube app for the full 360-degree experience.

Vienna State Opera VR - Beyond the Scenes

Scandal at the opening.

Everything began with doubt and scandal: the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll already came in for criticism by the press and the equally ungracious Viennese during the construction phase of the Court Opera. By subsequently raising the level of the Ringstrasse, the opera seemed to be one meter too deep in the ground, which earned it the name "sunken box".

The two architects were never to experience the opening of "their" opera house on May 25, 1869 with Mozart's Don Giovanni in the presence of the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Elisabeth: the sensitive van der Nüll committed suicide while Sicardsburg succumbed to a stroke. The emperor is said to have taken van der Nüll's death to heart in such a way that from then on he always gave the same polite verdict:

Immersify

Virtual High-Resolution Interactive 3D Tour of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Deep Space 8K

(Linz, 26.8.2020) Virtual reality applications are recently gaining popularity, not least due to the corona virus pandemic. In times of (post-) lockdown, it is becoming increasingly important to create new communication channels and immersive experiences that allow viewing and connecting to a distant world as if it were real—be it museum tours, concert visits or even lectures at universities. Such immersive experiences are created with the combination of ultra-high-quality video and spatial audio, together with the (remote) presentation in a large-screen immersive environment. Since 2009, the Ars Electronica Center has been offering such immersive experiences at the Deep Space 8K. Its most recent production, a virtual interactive 3D tour of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral, will be premiered live at this year’s Ars Electronica Festival.

3d tour wien

21 Billion Laser Points Make the Spectacular Experience Possible

The Translucent St. Stephen’s Cathedral allows visitors to fly through the real-time rendered point cloud and make hold on specified points, where high resolution 360° images of the full set of more than 21 billion laser points fade in to present this beautiful church with its full potential. In this unique level of detail, the laser points, which are based on RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems ’ point cloud scan of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral, correspond to a data volume of almost 400 gigabytes. Scan data acquisition was carried out within RIEGL’s longstanding and proven cooperation with the Dombauhütte St. Stephan . During only four scanning days a total of more than 1000 scan positions were recorded with a RIEGL VZ-400i laser scanner—in the church interior, in the catacombs, in the attic and on St. Stephen’s Square. This innovative approach offers spectators an interactive journey through the translucent sacred building in stereoscopic 8K.

The goal is to give the audience a feeling of seeing real-time and interactive content with such a high quality that actually cannot be rendered in real-time with current or near-future hardware. This was done by combining two types of content: A high-resolution point cloud that has been pre-rendered to 360° images from various perspectives by ScanLab Projects as well as a low-resolution point cloud that is being rendered in real-time. The never-before-seen view of Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral with multiple layers of transparency will be experienceable at Ars Electronica’s Deep Space 8K in stereo. The live premiere will take place during the Ars Electronica Festival 2020 on September 12, 2020 at 4:00 pm CEST ( live stream ). Festival visitors will also be able to see a demonstration of the content in the Deep Space 8K on each festival day (9-13 September 2020).

Research and development by EU project Immersify

The novel insights through the layers of the cathedral were created as part of the R&D project Immersify , which is funded by EU’s Horizon 2020 program and is dedicated to developing the next generation of immersive media. During three years, the project partners PSNC – Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (Poland), Spin Digital Video Technologies GmbH (Germany), Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes (France), Visualization Center C (Sweden) and Ars Electronica Futurelab (Austria) have created content for highly immersive environments using various techniques and developing tools for processing the produced data.

Day 1 – Rathaus, the Hofburg & St. Peter’s Church

vienna 3 day itinerary

Your first day in Vienna begins at  Rathaus , or Vienna City Hall, the seat of the local government dominating Rathausplatz. Its iconic Neo-Gothic architecture offers an impressive sight and overview of the history of the capital, and its courtyards provide an ideal place to relax or take pictures.

You will find that historical details add a unique character to the 19th-century structure, from the  Rathausmann  statue to murals decorating the walls.

The building is open for tourists for a free tour throughout the year and comes alive during holidays such as Christmas when extra decorations and the ice ring create an even more splendid atmosphere. Something to add to your bucket list!

2- Burgtheater

vienna 3 day itinerary

Across the road from Rathaus, you will find the  Burgtheater , the national theatre of Austria. It is the most influential German-language theatre and one of the most important theatres in the world.

You can admire the building and its beautiful architecture from the outside or step inside and join a guided tour, taking you on a journey through both historical entrance halls, the auditorium, the stage and globally-known works of art that survived the bombers of World War II.

During your tour, also take the opportunity to look out of the windows for scenic views across the Rathaus and other parts of the historical centre of Vienna.

3- Hofburg Palace

3d tour wien

Your next stop will be the impressive  Hofburg Palace , the former principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty built in the 13th century.

Located in the heart of Vienna, this iconic attraction has been a part of the city for centuries. Home to many monarchs over the years, it has withstood the test of time, and its architecture reflects its long history.

Today, it is home to numerous museums, galleries and theatres where you can experience all sorts of fascinating exhibits and performances throughout the year. It is open seven days a week, so there is always something new to explore; whether on a short or long stopover, time spent at this grand palace never disappoints.

4- St. Stephen’s Cathedral

vienna 3 day itinerary

You continue your discovery of Vienna with  St. Stephen’s Cathedral , a breathtaking Gothic church in the very heart of the city with Baroque fittings and an iconic multicoloured tiled roof. It is also the most important religious building in the capital.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a symbol of Austrian history and culture, dating back to 1147. It is renowned for its magnificent exterior and interior, filled with stunning statues and artwork from long ago until today. It is worth a visit on your 3 days in Vienna; if nothing else, it is a perfect place to take pictures or wander around (you will find many shops and restaurants).

5- St. Peter’s Church

vienna 3 day itinerary

Not far from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, you will find  St. Peter’s Church  (Peterskirche), a Baroque Roman Catholic parish church in the heart of Vienna.

It is one of the oldest churches in the city, giving it a long and fascinating history. First built before 1230, it underwent a process of Baroque reconstruction from 1701 that significantly transformed its appearance at that time. Today, it houses many remarkable works of art, such as masterpieces from European painters and several exquisitely crafted altarpieces from local Austrian artists.

At Peterskirche, you can marvel at breathtakingly detailed paintings, statue carvings, and frescoes for hours. Plus, the entrance is free, so do not hesitate to step inside or admire its beauty from the outside and relax in its garden.

Your first day in Vienna finished at the  Ferstel Passage , a gorgeous royal arcade built in 1860, filled with a fountain and a courtyard that offers exclusive boutiques, bars and cafés.

Walking through the passage with its unique arches and glass roof will transport you back in time to the Habsburg Empire. It is a lovely place to ramble, do some shopping or enjoy an evening meal with a glass of wine.

Day 2 – National Library, Opera & Karlskirche

1- austrian national library.

3d tour wien

Your second day in Vienna begins with the gorgeous  Austrian National Library , located in the Neue Burg Wing of the Hofburg, the most extensive library in Austria, with one of the most impressive collections of books, manuscripts and documents in Europe.

Founded in 1526, it contains over 12 million items, covering a mixture of topics from music to politics and everything in between, giving researchers and students a wealth of knowledge to investigate. And thanks to its unique atmosphere and architecture, it is a perfect place to add to your 3-day itinerary.

The entrance to the State Hall is not free (10,00€), but worth it! You will be able to immerse yourself in the 300-year-old Baroque splendour and admire an elaborately decorated dome and numerous frescoes.

2- Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper)

You continue your journey to the  Vienna State Opera ,  Wiener Staatsoper , one of the leading opera houses in the world steeped in tradition and history, allowing you to enjoy some of the most inspiring art in Europe through remarkable performances.

With grand, regal concert halls and more than 200 years of experience, Vienna State Opera is a sight to behold. As the premiere location for operatic performances, this stunning venue offers you a chance to experience Viennese culture through its rich theatrical heritage.

Whether enjoying the incredible music, seeing lavish ballet costumes in person, or simply taking in the beautiful architecture and interior of the building through a guided tour, you will be delighted by what you find in this Operahouse.

3- Karlskirche (St Charles Church)

vienna 3 day itinerary

Your next stop will be the  Karlskirche , the largest Baroque church in Vienna and one of its most iconic landmarks. Located on the south side of Karlsplatz, it was built between 1713 and 1737 as a votive offering for a plague that hit the city in 1713.

The façade features two columns inspired by Trajan’s Column in Rome, and inside, you will find many incredible frescoes, including the one depicting the crowd of people saved from death by Saint Charles Borromeo, both remarkable works of art.

From one view outside the building, Karlskirche can be seen framed and reflected perfectly in the water, adding to its splendour as one of the best things to do in Vienna. You can also step inside the building (for a fee of 8,00€) and admire its masterpieces or climb to the top for a panoramic view of the capital.

4- Belvedere Palace

vienna 3 day itinerary

Continue your way southeast to the well-known  Belvedere Palace , a historic building complex consisting of two Baroque palaces, the Orangery and the Palace Stables – an absolute gem in Vienna!

This Baroque palace was designed by influential architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt and is today an impressive tourist attraction. During your visit, you can explore the two palaces – Upper and Lower Belvedere – and the expansive gardens that include sculptures and 250-year-old tree-lined walks.

Both palaces are rich with exquisite art that depict Viennese life during their construction at the beginning of the 18th century. Whether you visit to see its regal ambience or step inside its galleries, a trip to Belvedere Palace is a must-do on any Vienna city trip!

For photo lovers, walk at the end of the park to capture the palace in the beautiful water reflection 🙂

5- Naschmarkt

If you have the time, walk, bike or use public transport to reach the  Naschmarkt , an eclectic market offering over 120 market stands and restaurants for a colourful culinary experience from Viennese to Indian, from Vietnamese to Italian. Whether you are a food lover or not, this place is worth the detour!

You will also find in the area some great restaurants, such as Do-An and Neni. In addition, it is a lovely place to stop for a well-deserved break or some drinks.

However, always check the opening and closing times in advance, as they will change depending on the season.

Day 3 – Schönbrunn Palace & Danube Tower

1- schönbrunn palace .

vienna 3 day itinerary

Your third and final day in Vienna starts at the  Schönbrunn Palace , one of the most beautiful Baroque complexes, located just outside the city centre in Hietzing (you can easily access it in less than 30 minutes by taking the subway U4).

Built as a summer palace for the powerful Habsburg dynasty, Schönbrunn Palace is a marvel to behold in Vienna. This stunning Baroque structure was once the official residence of Empress Maria Theresa and has since been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site takes you around the world back to the 18th century with its magnificent gardens, grounds and majestic reception rooms. To fully experience Schönbrunn Palace, take the time to explore its awe-inspiring interiors, consider its fascinating history and soak up the grandeur of this exceptional site inside out.

2- Schönbrunn Garden

vienna 3 day itinerary

Once in Schönbrunn, take extra time to discover the  gardens , stretching 1.2 km from east to west and approximately 1 km from north to south, placed with the palace on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1996.

The main entrance to the park is free, but you will need to purchase tickets if you want to access the Privy Garden, the Orangery Garden, the Maze, the Zoo, the Palm House and the Desert House.

3- Prater Amusement Park

It is time to head to the opposite side of the city and explore the  Prater amusement park and its famous Giant Ferris Wheel . To reach it, take the subway U4 then U1 – it should take less than 45min.

If you are looking for a unique experience during your vacation in Vienna, look no further than a visit to Prater. This historical site is one of the oldest parks in the world, having been open since the 18th century. Today, it is filled with exciting rides and attractions that will bring out the inner child in everyone!

From classic roller coasters to 3D dark rides and thrilling high-tech experiences, there is something for all ages. And, of course, do not miss the Wiener Riesenrad, or  Riesenrad , a 64-metre tall Ferris wheel located at the entrance and one of the most popular tourist attractions – perfect for a fun family time.

And if you are not into this type of activity, you can stroll through the beautiful gardens spread throughout the park. Whether you are ready for an adrenaline rush or want to take in some culture, this area has it all.

Your 3-day itinerary in Vienna ends with the  Danube Tower , or  Donauturm , one of the highest buildings in Austria, standing at a whopping 252 metres tall. For those looking to get a birds-eye view of the city, then this tower is just the place!

The impressive landmark is located on the banks of the Danube River and offers an incredible panoramic view. On clear days, you can even spot neighbouring Slovakia! And as well as providing a stunning lookout platform and rooftop café, you can join activities like bungee jumping or rappelling off its side.

With such an array of breathtaking experiences, you will not want to miss out on seeing this iconic landmark for yourself – a perfect way to end your magical vacation in Vienna.

How long to spend in Vienna

I recommend spending  at least 3 days  in Vienna.

3 days are the perfect amount of time to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the Austrian capital and discover its main highlights and attractions, such as Vienna Rathaus, Belvedere Palace, Schönbrunn Palace and its many gardens – without rushing!

Vienna is easily accessible on foot or by public transport (check the app for a day pass – trams and subways are great for getting around quickly), making it the ideal place for a long weekend getaway, perfect for first-time visitors, families or couples.

And if you are short on time, you can also use the electric bike and scooter, easily bookable through the Uber app!

On the other hand, spending more time is always a great thing. It will allow you to see more, visit more museums and truly connect with the culture and locals.

My experience – I spent 3 days in Vienna, which was perfect for getting an overview of the city. However, I wish I had spent more time there. We managed to see all the best attractions, but we did not have much time to visit the museums and exhibitions.

vienna 3 day itinerary

Best time to visit Vienna

Vienna is an interesting and exciting city to visit any time of year. However, there are optimal times when the weather is bright and sunny, perfect for exploring historical monuments, elegant gardens and delicious cuisine.

The best time to visit Vienna tends to be during the summer months, from  June to August,  when temperatures usually range from 16-25 degrees Celsius. It allows for plenty of outdoor activities and sightseeing without worrying about weather changes too often. It will also be a lovely time to enjoy the gardens and watch a movie in an outdoor cinema. But because these months are popular with tourists, it may mean that crowds can become quite large.

If you prefer to visit the capital during a quieter time, prioritise  spring (April – May) and autumn (September – October) . If you plan your vacation around these non-peak times, you will be able to appreciate the city without it being too crowded with visitors. Plus, the weather should still be mild and enjoyable!

No matter what time of year you choose, there is sure to be something interesting for everyone 🙂

My experience – I visited Vienna in January and had a great time! It was not busy at all, and the weather was a bit cloudy but OK. It was even sunny on our last day. However, I want to visit again in the summer to discover another side of the city and enjoy the outdoors more.

How to get around Vienna

Walking  is a great way to see the sights of Vienna and get some exercise at the same time. Many of its best attractions are within walking distance of each other, so you can easily explore them on foot, even on a short day trip.

Plus, Walking will allow you to get to know the capital better, get lost in its streets and discover hidden gems!

By public transportation

Public transportation  is an efficient and affordable way to get around Vienna. The city has an extensive network of buses, trams, subways and trains that can take you to most places you need to go. A single ride on public transportation costs 2,40€, and a 24-hour pass costs 5,80€.

To book your trip, use the  WienMobil  app – it does not have great reviews on the App Store, but personally, it was easy to use and reliable. Otherwise, you can buy your tickets on the tram (which will cost more) or at the subway stations.

You can also check out this  website  for more information on prices and timetables.

To travel from the airport to the city centre , I recommend using the  CAT . The train takes you on a 16-minute direct journey but is a bit pricey (12,00€ single ticket at the machine, less expensive  online ). However, it is the easiest and fastest way to reach the city or/and the airport.

By bike & scooter

Finally, Vienna is a perfect city to explore  by bike or scooter , as it has an extensive network of bike lanes. You can rent one from your hotel or the  WienMobil Rad , a public bike rental service that allows everyone to move around on a budget. A 30-minute pass costs 0,60€, and you can return your bike to any station when you have finished. And if you need a boost, rent an electric bike or scooter – especially great when going uphill!

You can also look at the  Uber  app if it is easier for you and already on your phone – it will allow you to find a scooter or bike around you and book them.

Sustainable travel in Vienna

Sustainable travel  means exploring the world whilst being aware of your surroundings and having a positive social, environmental and economic impact on the places you visit.

Being a responsible traveller in Vienna is possible! Here are some eco-friendly tips for reducing your carbon footprint:

  • Book direct flights  (which require less fuel than indirect flights)  and  offset your carbon footprint . But, do not use carbon offsetting as a complete solution. Combine it with other sustainable practices, like avoiding single-use plastic on the plane and mindfully packing your suitcase for your green holiday.
  • Select an eco-friendly accommodation . It is not always easy to determine whether a hotel has eco-conscious practices, but try to look on their website for green credentials and ask questions. You can also use  Bookdifferent  or  Ecobnb  to help you decide.
  • Walk or use public transport  as much as possible. The transportation network of Vienna is easy and reliable, allowing you to move around quickly and access the main highlights and attractions with buses, trains or subways. So buy a day pass and take advantage of these services to reduce your impact! And if you like exercising, do not hesitate to rent a bike. It is a fun way to explore the capital.
  • Eat at local restaurants  that use produce from the area and emphasise organic and sustainability. It will contribute to the local economy and reduce your carbon footprint by supporting restaurants where food does not come from long distances.
  • Always respect the local heritage . Treat people and their surroundings with respect. Sustainable travel is not only about the environment but also about the local communities. So, always be respectful, smile and learn a few German words 🙂

In light of lackluster record, resolved to stop trying so hard

AUGUSTA, Ga. – There are many reasons to posit why Max Homa is in contention to win the 88th Masters Tournament despite barely breaking a pinecone around here in four previous starts.

There’s the clarifying effect of playing with Tiger Woods for two days. There’s Homa’s realization that he does better if he plays the week before a major. There’s the notion that he’s simply too good and success was bound to get in the way sooner or later.

But to paraphrase Crash Davis, the famous catcher from “Bull Durham,” the only thing that matters is what Homa himself believes is the reason for his good play. In this case, it’s because he isn’t busting a vein to TRY and play well.

“I wrote something in my journal yesterday that said however good I am is however good I am,” he said. “I don't need to try to be better than I am, and just see where that takes me. Maybe it's winning this and maybe it's not, and I'm OK with that. I know what I put into this game.

“Trying to get every ounce back doesn't really work,” he added, “and I've tried that part.”

His perspective this week has worked, though. At 6-under 138, Homa is tied for the clubhouse lead with Bryson DeChambeau. Homa followed his first-round 67 with a 71 on Friday.

That sort of teeth-gnashing can be especially ineffective in tough conditions. Homa, Woods and Jason Day had to return to play their last five holes of Round 1 early Friday. They went 23 holes in total, and the wind picked up as the day wore on. Their last hole of Round 2 featured a freak sandstorm. The intensifying wind blew the sand out of the bunkers, sending the players ducking for cover.

“It was kind of even the golf course saying, ‘Get the hell out of here,’” Homa said.

Funny. That’s the same response you’d have gotten had you told a friend you picked Homa to win this week. He came into this Masters with a 74.1 scoring average and two missed cuts in four starts at Augusta National. He had never broken 70, and his best finish was a T43 last year. Do they give out crystal for that?

This is also the same guy who has regularly poked fun at himself for having just one top-10 finish in a major – a T10 at The Open Championship last summer.

Which gets to another reason why Homa is playing well. Performing under pressure is partly a matter of adding layers of self-belief, each layer making the next one ever more likely. In his prime, Woods took this to the extreme, adding layer upon layer in the biggest moments until no one, especially not him, believed he could lose.

After his best-ever result in a major at The Open last July, Homa put in a laudable performance at the Ryder Cup in Rome, going 3-1-1 to provide a rare U.S. highlight. He punctuated his week with an 8-foot par putt to beat Matt Fitzpatrick in singles, knowing that if he missed Europe would clinch the Cup.

"I had such a good week, personally, on the golf course that I knew I would be labeled a 'choker' and it just didn't feel like a fair thing,” Homa later told the No Laying Up podcast. “But I remember I really turned my brain on. 'You wanted this. This is a very cool opportunity.’” Although he went on to admit that his legs were shaking, Homa, in making that putt, did much more than postpone the inevitable U.S. loss. He added a layer.

“Well, he's got all the talent in the world,” Woods said of Homa on Friday. “I got a chance to play with him at the (2022) Open Championship at St. Andrews, and his ball flight, as solid as he hits it, it's just a matter of time before he starts winning in bunches.

“I saw it up front; he doesn't really mis-hit shots,” Woods continued. “That's something you just have to do around this golf course.”

Homa has not had a three-putt in two days. He made just two bogeys in 23 holes Friday and was a human highlight film. At the end of his first round, he nearly holed out from the fairway at the par-4 17th hole, tapping in for birdie. And at the start of his second, he hit a 240-yard 7-wood to 37 feet and drained the birdie putt at the par-3 fourth hole.

He anticipated writing more in his journal.

“Probably pretty similar stuff,” Homa said. “Five or six things I'm grateful for, usually people. Sometimes opportunity. I'll be quite grateful to get to play Saturday at the Masters.

“Yeah, and probably just write down about what I learned from today and what I'm going to take with me,” he added, “and a lot of it is just going to be back to that detachment from the result. Just do the best I can, and that might be great, and it might not be, but I'm just going to be OK with that.”
