Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

7 night alaska hubbard glacier cruise

Vancouver, a bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia, is among Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities. A popular filming location, it’s surrounded by mountains, and also has thriving art, theatre and music scenes. Vancouver Art Gallery is known for its works by regional artists, while the Museum of Anthropology houses preeminent First Nations collections.

7 night alaska hubbard glacier cruise

Humpback whales feed in Icy Strait above North Chichagof Island, an important travel corridor for many marine mammals, including federally threatened Steller's sea lions. The area's coastal marshes and mudflats are important as resting areas for shorebirds and waterfowl, and provide spring feeding areas for brown bears. Marbled murrelets feed in large numbers within the waters of Icy Strait and nest in the island's coastal old growth forest.

Hubbard Glacier

7 night alaska hubbard glacier cruise

Stretching over 90 miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier severs into great ice chunks, known as "calves."

7 night alaska hubbard glacier cruise

Considered the "gem" of Southeast Alaska, the city is nestled against the ocean, tucked tight against the mountains and back-dropped by the lush green of the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass. Visitors will find that Juneau is not only the state's capital, but it's also a melting pot of history, unique topography and jaw-dropping scenery that is found nowhere else on the planet. Whether it's wildlife viewing, glacier trekking, ziplining or just shopping for locally created artwork, visitors to this remote yet extraordinary region will certainly find a bit of "Alaska" to take home.

7 night alaska hubbard glacier cruise

A city of southeast Alaska on an island in the Alexander Archipelago. A supply point for miners during the gold rush of the 1890s, it is now a major port and tourist center on the Inside Passage. Population: 7,450.

Hubbard Glacier, AK

To see discounted cruises that visit or depart from this port, use the Find a Bargain box on the left.

While most of the world's glaciers are receding, North America's largest tidewater glacier is advancing. At 76 miles long and 7 miles wide, Hubbard Glacier presents a majestic sight for passengers cruising across Yakutat Bay on the Alaskan panhandle. One of the behemoth's most impressive stunts is the same reason ships must keep a safe distance from the spot where it occupies Disenchantment Bay: The glacier calves frequently, meaning that large chunks of ice break off from its face and plunge into the water below, creating icebergs. In addition to witnessing this spectacle of nature, keen eyes also can catch glimpses of the area's wildlife, which includes harbor seals, orcas and humpback whales.

6 best Alaska cruises for families

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Adorable sled dog puppies, graceful whales, fascinating totem poles, crazy lumberjacks, majestic glaciers — Alaska has much to offer families of all ages. But if you’re looking for the best Alaska cruise for kids, which ship should you choose?

Families have great choices when sailing up north, including a ship full of Disney characters, one with laser tag and a go-kart race track and many with expansive play spaces for kids, waterslides and family-focused onboard activities. Look for bigger ships with plenty of amusements; smaller and older ships might not have as many kid-friendly attractions.

I’m not mentioning luxury cruise ships here because they are geared for adults, but families looking for a more upscale, smaller-ship cruise to Alaska should know that many high-end lines will put on some kid programming during summer-break cruises to Alaska with a higher-than-usual number of children on board.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

If you’re ready to cross Alaska off your bucket list, here are our recommendations for the best Alaska cruises for families.

7-night Alaska Adventure cruise on Quantum of the Seas

The 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas is not one of Royal Caribbean ’s largest-in-the-world Oasis Class ships that boast zip lines, ice skating rinks and AquaTheaters. But it still offers a great mix of activities, including a skydiving simulator, high-tech theater with robotic “dancing” screens, an escape room, indoor basketball court/bumper car pavilion and dedicated spaces for both kids and adults.

Kids can gobble up hot dogs and pizza at themed eateries, while adults can enjoy date night at Wonderland with its imaginative molecular gastronomy or Jamie’s Italian, created by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Seven-night Alaska cruises sail round-trip from the easily accessible port of Seattle and visit Sitka, Skagway and Juneau, Alaska; as well as Victoria, British Columbia. One day is spent cruising through the scenic Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier. Sailings depart between late April and September.

7-night Alaska cruise on Disney Wonder

Disney Cruise Line ‘s 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder (which can carry 2,713 guests when completely full) is the perfect size ship for a family cruise to Alaska. It’s smaller than many of the megaships catering to families in this part of the world, so guests can view glaciers and enjoy shore excursions without feeling too crowded.

The ship is full of Disney magic — photo ops with Mickey and friends and Disney princesses, restaurants themed to “The Little Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Frog” and a musical stage show of “Frozen.”

Cabins are thoughtfully designed for families, with plentiful bunkbeds and split bathrooms so two people can get ready for bed at once. Waiters assist with cutting up food for little cruisers or bringing pureed baby food, and the imaginative kids clubs keep little ones happily occupied when you’re not exploring in port.

Disney Wonder’s weeklong Alaska cruises sail round-trip from Vancouver, so all Americans, even kids, will need passports to fly in to the departure port. The ship visits Juneau, Ketchikan and either Skagway or Icy Strait Point, with glacier viewing at the Stikine Icecap. Seasonal sailings run May to September.

7-night Alaska cruise on Carnival Spirit

Carnival Cruise Line ’s Alaska cruises aboard the 2,124-guest Carnival Spirit might not be the cheapest sailings the line offers, but you get a lot for your money. Families will appreciate not having to pay extra for kid-friendly eats at the onboard pizzeria, Mexican outlet, Guy Fieri’s burger joint and all-day soft serve ice cream station. Comedy shows (both family-friendly and adults-only), an onboard water park, mini-golf and kid, tween and teen clubs are also included in the fare.

Cabins are no-frills but tend to be roomier than comparable cabins on competitors’ ships. Many rooms sleep four, but connecting cabins will get you more space and an extra bathroom while still keeping the family together.

Carnival Spirit spends summers in Alaska from late April to mid-September. It sails round-trip from Seattle and visits Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, BC, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

7-night Glacier Bay cruise on Norwegian Encore

Norwegian Cruise Line offers one of the longest cruise seasons in Alaska, and Norwegian Encore is based in the region from April through October each year. This might not help the typical family, but if your kids are young, you homeschool or have atypical breaks, a shoulder-season deal might be waiting for you.

The 3,998-passenger ship is NCL’s biggest, and families will be amazed at how much there is to do on board (though be prepared to pull out your credit card for the best activities). The ship features a laser tag arena, go-kart race track, virtual reality pavilion and water park.

Norwegian is also known for its entertainment, and after a day hiking on glaciers or chowing down at salmon bakes, you can take in the spectacular “Choir of Man,” sing along to the Beatles tribute show at The Cavern Club, or laugh yourself silly at The Social Comedy Club.

Like many of the best Alaska cruises for families, Norwegian Encore sails round-trip from Seattle, stopping in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria. The standout day on this itinerary is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , which only a limited number of ships can visit each year. Save more by taking advantage of Free at Sea perks , which often include a free beverage package, Wi-Fi, shore excursion credit, specialty dining and — perfect for families — free third and fourth guests in each cabin.

7-night Voyage of the Glaciers cruise on Royal Princess

Families with a little more vacation time might want to tack a visit to the Alaskan interior before or after their cruise, either independently or with a cruisetour. For this, you’ll need a one-way cruise that begins or ends in an Alaskan port.

A top candidate for this kind of family vacation is a seven-night cruise on Princess Cruises ‘ Royal Princess sailing between Vancouver and Whittier, Alaska. The ship stops in Ketchikan, Juneau and either Skagway or Sitka, with scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and either College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier, depending on the itinerary.

It’s then up to you whether you spend you pre- or post-cruise time in the Kenai Fjord area, in Anchorage or traveling north to Denali National Park, Fairbanks or into the Arctic.

Royal Princess is known for its fan-favorite Alfredo’s pizza, Movies Under the Stars (when the Alaskan weather permits) and snacks and entertainment in the central Piazza. With its special North to Alaska activities, families can cuddle some adorable sled dogs on board the ship and meet Iditarod winners and other notable locals. Kids can become junior rangers with the help of the park rangers who come aboard the ship in Glacier Bay.

7-night Kids in Nature cruise on Wilderness Legacy

Suppose your family isn’t into the big-ship lifestyle and wants a small-ship, off-the-beaten-path experience that’s also geared toward families with kids and teens? In that case, the best family cruise to Alaska for you might be the “Kids in Nature” departures of UnCruise Adventures ’ 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy.

The ship sails round-trip from Juneau on “Glaciers & Wildlife” itineraries. These seven-night cruises include hiking and biking on Chichagof Island, daytime and evening kayak and skift tours in places like Patterson Bay and Robert and Crow Islands, exploring Glacier Bay’s less-visited “Outback” and visits to the LeConte and Baird Glaciers.

On three departure dates in June and July 2024, the Wilderness Legacy will staff up with “Kid Wranglers” who will lead the kid-focused activities. The minimum age to sail is 8 years old, but plenty of tweens and teens join the fun as well.

Bottom line

You no longer have to wait until you’re retired to explore Alaska. Take the kids on a weeklong exploration of the 49th State, and you’ll have plenty of cruise ships and itineraries to choose from. The best Alaska cruises for families combine action-packed itineraries with vessels designed for family fun, but we’re sure your family can find a way to have a great time up north no matter which cruise ship you choose.

Is Glacier Bay a must do?

I am planning an Alaska cruise for next July 2020 and it looks like Princess is the only one that goes to Glacier Bay. Is this a must do? Or are there similar ports that might be similar?

Definitely want to see the glaciers from the ship and not sure if that is the best.

Try typing "cruise lines allowed in glacier bay 2020" into Google.  You will get the following -

" A prospectus soliciting proposals for cruise ship   services was issued in May 2018. A panel of  technical experts reviewed each proposal package,   and new ten-year concession contracts were awarded   to seven businesses:   Princess Cruise Lines Ltd, Holland America Line Inc., NCL (Bahamas) Ltd, Carnival plc (Cunard Line), Seabourn Cruise Line Limited, Viking Cruises Ltd and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.   The NPS anticipated the contracts will be effective October 1, 2019.   "

Also, if you go to Glacier Bay on a cruise line, none of them stop there.  You can't go on shore.

Tapi

Glacier Bay was the absolute highlight of our Alaska cruise. Stunning and majestic. Videos and photos couldn’t remotely do it justice. So glad that we selected a cruise that specifically visited  Glacier Bay.

"Must do" is strictly a personal and very subjective decision. However, you will find MANY here (including ourselves who put it high on the Alaska list. Some reading on the board would find many discussions in this vein.

Princess is definitely not the only cruise line that goes to Glacier Bay. Up until the end of this season, Holland America had as many permits as Princess. Not exactly sure how the new contracts disperse the permits.

Coral

Several lines do Glacier Bay.

I do put it as a "Must" for a first cruise. Hubbard and Tracy Arm are often skipped due to conditions that prevent the ship from getting close. If you only have one glacier day, you can miss it (like I did on my first cruise). Try to book a cruise with 2 glacier days.

You can also do flyovers from other ports. It's not a place that is easily "gone into" save by boat or air.

To clarify, Glacier Bay isn't a port of call where you get off the ship, but is a full day of scenic cruising.

I have cruised Alaska once without Glacier Bay on the itinerary, and on that cruise due to poor weather we had to skip Hubbard Glacier, so wound up with no glaciers viewed from the ship. We did visit Mendenhall Glacier from Juneau, and we also saw glaciers on a small boat trip in the Kenai Fjords from Seward.

The second time we cruised we got amazing weather and had an itinerary that included Glacier Bay, and we reached Hubbard this time too. We also did Glacier Quest small boat trip (26 Glaciers is another option) from Whittier before the cruise.

The thing is you can be very very lucky or unlucky with weather, no matter which itinerary you choose. Poor weather might mean you have to miss the port/scenic viewing altogether, or you are there but can hardly see anything.

I am not sure I am making much sense. Glacier Bay is amazing but if you get unlucky with weather, you might wonder what the fuss was about. So the suggestion that you try to have 2 days of glacier viewing in your itinerary is a good one (ie, Glacier Bay plus Hubbard or College). However, there are other ways to see glaciers in Alaska (see my ideas above). Are there other criteria that you have in deciding which Alaskan cruise to do, other things that are important to you?

Though, Glacier Bay is almost never cancelled and ships do seem to get close even when it is rainy.

You did the same thing I did - after not getting to any glacier on the first cruise, I did several on my next trip! Most don't get a 2nd trip!

My first trip was a RT out of Vancouver so doing a glacier trip in Whittier or Seward was not an option. Many do RT out of Vancouver or Seattle. I now know that the one ways are far superior for glacier viewing.

I do consider Glacier Bay a "must do" but it's not just the glaciers in Glacier Bay NP that are spectacular, the scenery is just as beautiful.  As Tapi mentioned, photos and videos can't do justice to how stunning the scenery really is. Here's a picture of the Coral Princess as she heads toward Margerie Glacier.

We cruised the first week of June on the Holland Westerdam and there was still a lot of snow on the mountains.

The scenery is absolutely breathtaking in Glacier Bay.

We have our 4th Alaskan cruise booked for September of 2020.  It is called "The Great Glaciers Cruise".  Shows 3 full days described as glacier cruising, it's an 11 day cruise.  We can not wait to go back.

One day Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, one day Hubbard Glacier, one day Glacier Bay.

One of the three previous Alaskan cruises did not include Glacier Bay, we really missed that day.  To us, it's like the day you are in the canal on a Panama Canal cruise, so the highlight.  A day to be outside on deck or balcony as much as possible.

We find Glacier Bay to be one of the two most serene places on earth. The other would be Geirangerfjord Norway, so quiet and breathtakingly beautiful.

So to sum up, IMO Glacier Bay is a must do!

Geriangerfjord is so beautiful! So is Glacier Bay! I agree.

Our Alaska cruise (our first) did not include Glacier Bay and I agonized over our decision.  The price, port times and everything else was perfect, so we booked it and I constantly second-guessed myself until the cruise.  We spent an extra day in Seward and did the 6 hour tour with Major Marine - and Aialik Glacier and the entire area were incredible, so I felt a bit better.  Our day at Hubbard Glacier was absolutely amazing - the captain was able to get within 4/10 of a mile and it was massive!! I understand that doesn't always happen, but it was one of the most spectacular sights I've ever seen!

So, we didn't get to Glacier Bay and had amazing glacier viewing without going there.  I'd still love to see it, but please know that you can have a great experience without it.  I beat myself up for months about missing Glacier Bay since everyone seems to say it's a "must-do".  Just a different opinion....

Been to Alaska many times, with well over 20 visits to GB. While I have missed both Hubbard Glacier & Tracy Arm, I have never missed GB due to weather or ice conditions.

In addition to the scenery & glacier viewing, the talks from the Park Rangers compliment an excellent day.

Therefore, personally we consider GB as mandatory for any Alaska cruise.

How would you have felt if you missed Hubbard? We missed it on my first cruise so there was no glacier viewing on that cruise.

Either have Hubbard as your 2nd glacier or save it for a 2nd cruise.

Hubbard is nice if you can get to it. I have had 5 unsuccessful attempts and 1 successful attempt that wasn't that close. Not good odds.

Thanks for the photos! My husband is sold on it : ) If we could see one calving like you showed he would be thrilled.

I'm going to now try to figure out how many days to spend in Anchorage and then Denali so I can book flights and cruise.

I'm in the camp that Glacier Bay is not a must. Our first two cruises to Alaska were round-trip ones from Seattle that went to Tracy Arm. It is a spectacular journey through the fjord even if you can't make it close to the glacier. We were fortunate to get fairly close on our first cruise but not as close on the second. The ship was still close enough to Sawyer Glacier to see some calving--but not the spectacular feeling of being close up to it.

This summer I took back-to-back cruises from Vancouver to Whittier and back. Both cruises went to Glacier Bay. On the northbound cruise, that day was followed by College Fjord. I did a small boat excursion from Whittier (26 glaciers). On the southbound cruise, the ship went to Hubbard Glacier then Glacier Bay. I had five days in a row of viewing glacier--and I never got tired of them. My favorite was the day in Prince William Sound on the small boat. If possible, you should book a small boat excursion.

IMO, Glacier Bay is a must see. In addition to the impressive glaciers, you see quite a bit of wildlife. Beached seals, breaching whales, otters, and maybe even a bear on the shore.

I must be doing something wrong.  Been to Hubbard 3 times and made it 3 times including once on a really small boat where we got really close to the glacier.  In fact, when the glacier calved, we rocked.

french fries at night

I am a geography nerd and I wanted to see ALL the glaciers.  So on my first cruise, this June, I did Coral Princess - a day in Glacier Bay, an evening in College Fjord, and then the 26 Glaciers cruise on debarking day in Whittier.  IMO they were all completely worth it for different reasons and I was not at all bored spending 3 days pretty exclusively glacier- and wildlife watching.

At 6am on Glacier Bay day I stepped on my balcony and saw a sea otter for the first time.  Can't beat that!!!

I completely agree.  Be sure to bring binoculars for your Alaskan cruise.  I have a long zoom lens on my camera and the morning we entered Glacier Bay National Park I got these two pictures from our balcony.

We are doing an Alaska cruise May 2020 with Royal Caribbean on the Radiance of the Seas and our itinerary includes Glacier Bay!

Glacier Bay was nice, but we found College Fjord was great and in my opinion better.

College Fjords shines on a sunny day! It can be spectacular. On a foggy day - it is very disappointing.

7 night alaska hubbard glacier cruise

- If I were a "sunset loving" person, then I'd want my cabin on that side of the ship (north bound that'd be port - southbound starboard)

- If I were a "sunrise &/or land/mtn view" person, then I'd want that side of the ship (north bound that'd be starboard - southbound that'd be port)

Just a few thoughts; but I'd love to hear from experienced cruisers.

I suggest you look at the thread about cruising in Top Questions, top right of the page. Lots of good info there.

Basically the differences are that northbound is a bit cheaper, there may be different lengths of time in ports, and some of the ports/glaciers may vary.

So figure out the things you'd like to see and do (both on land and during the cruise ), and you might find the issue of which section to do first is decided for you.

As it turned out I am sooo pleased we did it this way around. We were so busy during the cruise - doing excursions in port during the day, catching up with our new-found friends at dinner in the evenings when back on the ship and then dancing the night away - by the time we arrived in Seward to start our independent land trip we were exhausted!!! It was nice to have a few days of slow driving around and some time to catch our breath!!

I am sure that many people have done it the other way around and think that is the best way - but for us this was the way that worked.

Whatever you decide to do - you will have an awesome time.

Personally, if you are a first-time visitor to Alaska , take the northbound cruise and end it up touring the interior to see what the rest has to offer. We have done this cruise at least six times, and the last was southbound in 2009. We ended up sittting for several hours at the Vancouver airport waiting for our flight to Portland.

Also, regarding northbound cruises , if your flight left from a U.S. port and arrives in Vancouver the same day as sailing you are taken directly to the ship without having to go through customs. Of course, you have to have a transfer. It was that way a couple of years ago, and assume it is still the same. Otherwise, you go through U.S. customs as you board the ship in Vancouver.

Thanks, all!

Have no idea what K2iks is referring to with Princess (they don't use Skagway??????? For clairfication- they most certainly do have itineraries with a port there.

Northbound, misses most of the daylight scenic sailing of Vancouver Island, where southbound has the advantage. Look at port times.

My trips are perfectly planned where my activity level is NEVER rushed or excessive down town. This can be a significant problem of cruisetours. In my opinion, the land portion needs FAR more homework, compared to the cruise , due to most people being uninformed and not knowing what they are purchasing.

You want to avoid short cruisetours, way too much time in transit and little at the destinations. Princess has way too many cruisetours, with only the worthless Natural History included- be certain to understand FULLY what Denali Park is all about http://www.nps.gov/dena If you want scenery and wildlife, you need to get INTO the park. Neither of the cruisetour "tours", get far enough in in my opinion. My min. distance in is Eielson via shuttle bus.

Another factor that may be of interest, is few cruisetours, include any time in Whittier or Seward . Both areas are gems for activities that may be of interest.

The key is to do your homework. :) The more you know, the better your choice will be for your touring priority.
