What Kind of All-Inclusive Cruises Can You Find In Alaska -- and Which One Is Right For You?

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Alaska is considered one of the last great wildernesses -- and navigating all your cruise choices to see as much as you can be overwhelming. Alaska is also notoriously expensive, so it's no wonder that many travelers prefer an all-inclusive cruise for their vacation to the 49th state.

There are several ways that you can design an all-inclusive cruise in Alaska . You can go on a luxury cruise ship where everything is included in the price. You can book an upscale or mainstream ship and stay in a suite that has more amenities bundled in the fare. Or you can go with a small expedition ship that might not have a fancy onboard experience, but which offers an up-close and personal adventure in Alaska's wild and remote places.

We'll break down what the pros and cons are of each choice when planning a luxury cruise to Alaska.

The All-Inclusive Alaska Cruise Experience

First, what makes an all-inclusive cruise in Alaska? For most people, it means that once you get onboard, many of the big decisions are taken care of for you. You don't have to worry about spending extra for drinks, alternative restaurants, Wi-Fi or gratuities.

Beyond that, some lines offer even more in their fares. Think a choice of shore excursions, a hotel room before your cruise, airfare to Alaska, free laundry, butler service and transfers to your hotel or ship from the airport (and vice versa). Many lines allow you to extend this all-inclusive way of travel to pre- or post-cruise tours into Denali National Park and Alaska's interior.

There's a certain ease to paying one fare and not having to worry about individual charges. Transportation in Alaska can be expensive, and the distances are vast; the northern ports of Seward and Whittier, where many cruise embark from, are about two hours from Anchorage, for example. So having your transfers included in your fare is a definite perk. Similarly, everyone loves free internet. And on an Alaska cruise, where getting wet and muddy on excursions happens more than you think, having access to free laundry is a huge bonus -- plus it saves on bulky packing.

Some of the other amenities that come with an all-inclusive cruise in Alaska are more of a personal decision. Even people who love a drink packages on Caribbean cruises may find that they aren't partaking as much in Alaska, where you tend to take more strenuous outdoor excursions and get up earlier. There isn't as much "sitting around in a bar" time on an Alaska cruise, compared to other cruises (and we'd argue that if you're going to do that, it's more fun to find a local Alaskan watering hole than staying on the ship).

You could also debate the value of included shore excursions; it depends on how big you're going with your cruise overall and what your interests are. If you're the kind of person who wants to go flightseeing or take a helicopter to the top of a glacier followed by a crab feast, you're going to be paying extra for that excursion anyway. Generally, any tour that requires someone with extra professional certification for an airplane, helicopter or boat is going to be an additional charge, no matter what cruise line you're on. Inclusive tours, if there are any, are likely to be low-impact tours like walking and motorcoach sightseeing.

All-Inclusive Luxury Alaskan Cruise Lines

Luxury cruise lines tend to have the most inclusions in their fares -- and those fares can be steep. It's worth taking a look at exactly what you're getting and doing some comparison shopping to make sure you're spending for the things you really want.

Regent Seven Seas has the most inclusions in their Alaska cruises, with almost every amenity that we mentioned above as part of the fare: gratuities, Wi-Fi, airport transfers, economy airfare, shore excursions, all beverages on the ship and in your suite, and all onboard restaurants. In 2023, the line is placing one of its more luxurious ships, Seven Seas Explorer, in Alaska; passengers who book will be assured that their accommodations at sea far surpass anything that you'd find on land.

On our June 2022 sailing, we found that the included excursions were hit and miss. We loved the Adventure Hike at Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, and a combo tour in Ketchikan that took in both the popular Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show with a stop at the Saxman Native Tlingit Village gave us a nice overview of the local culture. The Gold Creek Salmon Bake in Juneau, however, was a dud -- we would have been better off eating on the ship or in town.

We were also not thrilled with the Hilton, the included hotel that Regent partners with in Anchorage. While there aren't a lot of choices in Anchorage before a cruise, we would have preferred the Captain Cook, which Princess and Holland America Line use for their cruise tours.

The inclusion that proved to be a winner with Regent: Unlimited laundry, done that day and delivered to your room pressed in a box. If you have a family and are spending lots of time outdoors, this could be your most valuable perk.

Other all-inclusive luxury lines that operate in Alaska are Silversea and Seabourn. Both lines have newer ships in Alaska -- Silversea has Silver Muse , in addition to the older Silver Whisper, while Seabourn Odyssey and the new expedition ship Seabourn Venture represents Seabourn. All ships are smaller than the 738-passenger Explorer, with Silver Muse carrying 596 guests and Silver Shadow much smaller at 388 passengers. Seabourn Odyssey has space for 458 guests, while Venture carries 264.

Silversea has made its inclusions in Alaska similar to Regent's. On Silversea, you'll get all transfers (including those from your home to the airport), economy-class flights, a hotel the night before, gratuities, all drinks onboard and a shore excursion in each port. Silversea also boasts butler service for all suites onboard and caviar on demand; a few of its specialty restaurants do carry an extra fee. If you book a higher-level suite, you get premium Wi-Fi in your fare.

Seabourn includes dining in all restaurants, gratuities, Wi-Fi, all drinks onboard and in your suite, butler service for all rooms and caviar on demand in its fares. Transfers are not included if you don't book your airfare through Seabourn. While the line does not include shore excursions in its fare, it does have special Ventures by Seabourn expedition excursions to purchase that are more adventurous, including zodiac, kayaking and catamaran tours, led by the ship's own onboard team of specialists. The ship also has special complimentary Caviar on Ice Party that makes your all-inclusive cruise in Alaska an event, as well as a Seabourn jacket for all cruisers.

All-Inclusive Premium Cruises

Star Legend in Alaska (Photo: Dori Saltzman)

Several cruise lines in Alaska are considered "premium," meaning that they have some amenities included in their fare but not all.

Of these, the closest to all-inclusive is Viking Ocean . The line gives passengers free Wi-Fi; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; specialty coffees and bottled water; and a complimentary shore excursion in every port. There's also self-serve laundry onboard, as well as one of the best thermal spas at sea that's open to all guests. You'll pay for your own gratuities. Transfers from airport-to-pier are also extra, unless you book your air through Viking.

Windstar has an All-Inclusive Pricing option that gives you unlimited alcoholic beverages, unlimited Wi-Fi and all gratuities. This is not the base fare -- you'll have to select this option when you book, which will raise the overall price somewhat.

Oceania Cruises has a pricing option called OLife Choice where you receive 2-for-1 cruise fares, free roundtrip airfare with transfers and a choice of one amenity, ranging from a package of eight shore excursions, a beverage package or up to $800 in onboard credit. This is a particular good all-inclusive option if you're on an itinerary making lots of port stops.

All-Inclusive Options on Mainstream Alaska Cruise Lines

Most of the familiar mainstream cruise lines sail to Alaska and while none of them are all-inclusive when it comes to booking a standard cabin, that often changes if you book a suite.

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises have long been the most established of the cruise lines sailing Alaska, with more than 75 and 50 years in the state respectively.

HAL offers a "Have It All" fare that gives you a Wi-Fi package; a signature drink package and a certain number of complimentary nights in specialty restaurants and shore excursions, depending on how long your trip is.

Princess has introduced Princess Premier, a fare class that gives you unlimited Wi-Fi for up to four devices; a beverage package; two specialty dining meals; and digital downloads of photos taken onboard.

Norwegian, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean all have a range of perks for their top suites that can make booking one of these rooms closer to an all-inclusive experience.

In Norwegian Cruise Line's Haven suite complex , passengers receive butler service; their own special pool, bar and restaurant; an unlimited beverage package; free meals at specialty restaurants and Wi-Fi, as well a shore excursion credit.

Celebrity Cruises doesn't have any of its new Edge-class ships based in Alaska until 2024. Still, if you book a suite on the other ships, you receive Always Included perks such as a premium drink package; streaming Wi-Fi; gratuities, a shore excursion credit and onboard credit that you can spend elsewhere on the ship. Suite class and spa class guests also have their own restaurants onboard -- Luminae and Blu. The latter have included access to the ship's Persian Garden thermal suite.

Not all Royal Caribbean cruises in Alaska have an option to make your sailing all inclusive, but Quantum of the Sea s ship, does. If you book a Star Class suite, you will receive a drink and specialty restaurant packages, as well as Wi-Fi and the butler services of a Royal Genie. The smaller Brilliance of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas do not offer Star Class suites.

Small Expedition Ships in Alaska -- Are They All-Inclusive?

Alaskan Dream Cruises' passengers on a shore excursion

Another option in Alaska: small expedition ships that might not have all the dining and entertainment options of the big ships, yet more than make up for that with wildlife and nature-intensive cruises.

Be warned: small expedition ships can carry price tags just as high as the luxury and premium cruises. But in many ways, you get so much more when you choose one of these all-inclusive options -- a real close-up view of Alaska that's hard to duplicate otherwise.

These cruises often stop in smaller ports such as Wrangell, Petersburg, or the native village of Kake, and moor in remote natural areas such as Misty Fjords or the remote shores of Baranof Island. You also get better and more personal in-depth programming from the onboard naturalists, expedition guides and cultural interpreters.

The Norwegian cruise and expedition company Hurtigruten has its 528-passenger expedition ship MS Roald Amundsen in Alaska. On its expedition cruises, you receive a hotel night in Anchorage before your cruise; transfer to Seward with a stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center; complimentary Wi-Fi; house beer, wine and sodas at two of the onboard restaurants during meals; a reusable water bottle; and loan of boots, trekking poles and equipment (you also receive a wind and water-resistant jacket). If you're in a suite, you can also dine for free at the a la carte restaurant Lindstrom. Passengers on Roald Amundsen can also choose from an interesting range of included shore excursions, some of which are not offered on other cruise lines, such a visit to the Sons of Norway hall in Petersburg.

American Queen Voyages has its first expedition ship, the 186-passenger Ocean Victory , in Alaska. The ship is almost entirely all-inclusive, with unlimited beverages; a hotel night before the cruise; Wi-Fi; ground transfers; use of hiking sticks; and at least one included excursion per port. The ship also has a luxury feel to it, with an onboard infinity pool and small spa.

Lindblad Expeditions has long been a pioneer in Alaska small ship cruising and with its National Geographic credentials, it's a favorite of those who enjoy having access to world-class photographers onboard. All shore excursions and sightseeing entrance prices are included in your fare, as are all the onboard activities and presentations. Non-alcoholic drinks are included but you'll pay for alcoholic drinks. Gratuities, laundry, and Wi-Fi are not included.

UnCruise Adventures is another veteran expedition cruise line that really immerses you into the wilderness; you'll have opportunities to hike, kayak, paddleboard or snorkel (yes, snorkel!) almost every day. The ships are under 100 passengers, but luxury lovers need to know that the vessels are on the rustic side -- comfortable and cozy, not flashy and lavish. Your fare includes transfers and all drinks including alcohol (with plenty of local libations on tap), as well as use of all the outdoor gear. Wi-Fi is included but not always available.

Last but definitely not least, Alaskan Dream Cruises is about as Alaska as you can get, as the cruise line is run by the well-known Allen family who run excursions around the state. The fleet of small expedition ships is diverse; the 12-person Kruzof Explorer is a repurposed crab boat! Fares on Alaskan Dream include all of your excursions, which often cap off with a king crab and salmon feast at privately owned Orca Point Lodge; a glass of house wine and beer at lunch and dinner; use of gear such as rain jackets, rain pants and boots; transfers and Wi-Fi (if available). Gratuities are not included.

Bottom Line on All-Inclusive Alaska Cruises

As you can see, there are a wide range of options for your all-inclusive Alaskan cruise . What you decide to pick should be based on what's most important to you.

Don't splash out for a cruise with unlimited alcoholic beverages if the house wine or beer is just fine. Or if you'd prefer to choose your own excursions, you might want a line that has a lower base fare so you can put your money toward those pricey once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

What to expect on an Alaska cruise

How much are alaskan cruise prices, what affects the cost of an alaskan cruise, how to save money on an alaskan cruise, so, how much does an alaskan cruise cost.

Many travelers dream of taking an Alaskan cruise, but they often fear how much it will cost. But the truth is, Alaskan cruise prices can be more affordable than you think. There are simple ways to reduce Alaska cruise prices to fit almost any travel budget.

In this article, we'll share expected Alaskan cruise prices, additional unexpected costs to factor in and tips for saving money on your trip.

Your experience on an Alaskan cruise will vary based on the time of year you travel. The scenery, wildlife and foliage change by season, so many travelers return at different times of the year to experience it all.

One of the favorite things to do on an Alaskan cruise is to see wildlife. Cruise passengers have opportunities to see animals at sea and on land. Pay close attention throughout your journey because you may see Grizzly and black bears, moose, bald eagles, humpback whales and pods of orcas.

While many travelers assume that Alaska is cold year-round, that isn't necessarily true. The weather can change multiple times in a single day. Travelers may enjoy warm sunshine one minute, then chilly rain the next. Because of this, it is wise to dress in layers and bring clothing that's suitable for different types of weather.

Hours of sunshine also vary widely throughout the year. Alaska cruise season is from April to October, which avoids the coldest and darkest times of the year. Cruises around the summer solstice may enjoy around 20 hours of sunshine since the days are so long.

Alaskan cruise costs vary widely based on travel dates, length of trip, cabin style and other factors. To illustrate what you might expect to pay for an Alaskan cruise, we priced out trips from a few of the most popular cruise companies.

The sample trip departs from Seattle and takes place in May 2024.

When figuring out how much an Alaskan cruise is, travelers need to understand that many factors determine the price, as the total cost of an Alaskan cruise is more than just booking the cruise.

Base cruise fare

The base cruise fare is the price you'll often see advertised when researching Alaska cruises. This is the basic cost of getting on the ship and securing your room.

Port taxes and fees

In addition to the base cruise fare, all cruisers must pay port taxes and fees. Even if you find a "free cruise" through some promotion, you'll still pay these extra charges. The cruise company pays these taxes and fees to the ports and destinations you visit throughout your trip.

Cabin upgrades

Many travelers choose to upgrade their experience by booking a larger room, a better view or a room with better features. Base cruise fares often include an interior room. Depending on the cost, upgrading to an exterior room with a window can be a good idea.

Flight/transportation

Most cruise travelers don't live within driving distance of the departure city. Because of that, you'll need to factor in how you'll get to the departure port. Many travelers fly to the departure city, which can increase the cost of your trip.

You may want to extend your trip to factor in travel time and avoid issues in case of a delayed or canceled flight. Additionally, this provides time to enjoy the city for a few days before or after the cruise travel dates.

» Learn more: Is cruise travel insurance worth it?

Hotel stays

When staying in the departure city, you'll need a place to stay. Booking a hotel room, short-term rental, hostel or other accommodation is key because you won't be able to stay on the cruise ship during this time.

Shore excursions

During your cruise, your ship may stop in several ports along the way. At each stop, you can get off the ship to explore local attractions, tours and cuisine as part of a shore excursion.

These excursions have a wide variety of prices depending on the destination, admission cost and other factors. The excursion price typically includes transportation to and from the attraction.

Some travelers explore the port city on their own. You may be able to save money this way. However, you're responsible for organizing and paying for your transportation, admission and other items along the way.

Onboard entertainment and gambling

Most onboard entertainment is included in the price of your cruise. However, some exclusive events or VIP seating may cost extra. Many cruise ships also offer spa treatments and gambling, which aren't included in the cruise price.

Alcoholic beverages

While most cruises include all-you-can-eat and drink in the cruise price, alcoholic beverages generally cost extra. You can pay for each drink individually. However, some cruises offer a flat price for unlimited beer, wine and other alcohol.

» Learn more: 7 ways a cheap cruise gets pricey fast — and how to deal

Premium meals

Premium meals offer higher-end cuts of meat and gourmet specialties. Depending on the cruise ship company, premium meals may be included or cost extra. Factor this in when comparing Alaska cruise options.

Meals off ship

While most meals are covered on the cruise, once you depart, you're on your own for meals. Even if your shore excursions include food, you may not like what they offer. Alternatively, you may want to try local eateries to enjoy dishes you can't get at home.

Shopping and souvenirs

Part of the experience of traveling is buying goodies to bring home. You may find local food or cultural items that you can't find at home. Or these items can serve as a reminder of fond memories.

Vacation clothing

Many travelers use vacations as an excuse to update their wardrobes. When traveling to different climates, you may also need to buy new clothes to be comfortable in varying conditions. Additionally, you may need formal clothes to dine at the higher-end restaurants on the ship.

Although many cruise ships are all-inclusive, it is common practice to tip the staff for a job well done. Additionally, extra tipping can be useful to secure prime meal times or spots on excursions.

Travelers should budget $14 to $19 per day per person to cover gratuities. However, some cruise lines include gratuities in your package price.

With so many items to factor into the cost of an Alaskan cruise, savvy travelers look for ways to save money. Here are a few ways our readers have saved money on their Alaska cruise vacations.

Travel off-peak . Booking during slower periods can reduce the cost of your cruise or provide additional incentives from the cruise company.

Book last minute . Last-minute reservations can save money because once the cruise ship departs, they cannot sell that cabin. Some travel websites specialize in last-minute travel deals.

Use travel rewards . Cruise travelers often use airline miles to fly to their cruise and hotel points to stay in the departure city. Additionally, flexible points can be a solid option to cover the cost of the cruise.

Consider cruise insurance. If you're concerned about losing money because of a last-minute change or cancellation, consider purchasing a separate cruise travel insurance plan or booking your trip with a credit card that has travel insurance .

Book early . Cruise lines often offer deals and incentives to travelers who book early.

Work with a cruise agent . Travel agents who book cruise vacations often have access to deals and promotions not available anywhere else.

Stay in an interior room . While balcony or exterior rooms provide better views, consider how often you will be in your room.

Book excursions directly . Cruise lines often mark up the cost of excursions when selling them to passengers. Book directly to reduce the cost.

Skip the beverage package . While many people enjoy an alcoholic drink or two, will you drink enough to justify the daily fee? To save money, it can be worth skipping the inflated drink prices.

Many travelers dream of taking an Alaska cruise with friends or family. Alaskan cruise prices vary widely depending on many factors, but you can expect to pay at least $600 before taxes for a 7-night cruise to Alaska. Factors that will increase the cost include the cruise line selected, cabin type, the time of year and how long your trip is.

Extras like excursions, gambling, alcohol and premium meals may also affect the price. You can save money on your Alaska cruise by traveling in the off-season, booking at the last minute or using your travel credit card rewards .

Factors Affecting the Cost of an Alaskan Cruise

When it comes to planning your dream vacation aboard an Alaskan cruise, understanding the various factors that influence the average cost for an Alaskan cruise is crucial. Several elements can significantly impact your overall expenses, from the time of year you choose to sail to the type of cabin you book. Let’s dive into these factors to help you make an informed decision.

Seasonality

The Alaskan cruise cost can vary greatly depending on when you decide to set sail. The Alaska cruise season typically runs from May to the end of September, with peak months being June, July, and August. During these high-demand months, you can expect to pay a premium. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, consider cruising during the shoulder seasons of May and September. Make sure to pack properly for your Alaska cruise .

Type of Cruise Line

The cost of an Alaskan cruise also depends on your chosen cruise line. Mainstream cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line (our pick last time was Norwegian Sun ), Carnival, and Royal Caribbean offer more affordable options, from around $100 to $200 per person daily. On the other hand, luxury lines like Seabourn can cost upwards of $300 to $500 per person daily. Your choice will depend on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

Length of Cruise

The duration of your journey is another factor that affects Alaskan cruise prices. Most Alaskan cruise tours run for 7 to 12 nights; the longer you stay, the more you’ll pay. The most popular are 7-night cruises. We chose a ten-night Alaska cruise to spend more time in Alaska. Here, you can check our Alaska cruise review to see which port of calls we visited. Longer cruises often offer a more comprehensive experience, allowing you to explore more destinations.

Type of Cabin

Your choice of cabin can significantly impact how much you end up paying. Inside cabins are generally the most budget-friendly, costing between $75 and $150 per person daily. If you’re looking for a room with a view, ocean-view cabins can range from $100 to $200 per person per day. For those wanting a more luxurious experience, balcony cabins and suites can cost anywhere from $100 to $300 and $250 or more per person per day, respectively.

Alaska Cruise Itinerary

The Alaska cruise itinerary that suits you best and you choose can significantly impact your Alaskan cruise cost. Different Alaska cruise routes offer varying experiences and come with their own price tags.

  • Inside Passage : The Alaska Inside Passage is one of the most popular routes. It offers a scenic journey through Southeast Alaska’s waterways. Cruises on this route are often more affordable and shorter in duration.
  • Gulf of Alaska: Some cruises stop at Wittier and Seward ports, offering a different perspective of Alaska. These itineraries can be longer and may cost more as you sail north. Adding a land tour to places like Denali National Park or the cities of Fairbanks or Anchorage can significantly increase the length and cost of your trip. These add-ons provide a more comprehensive Alaskan experience but require a larger budget.
  • The cruise budget is also influenced by whether you are taking a round-trip cruise that is starting and ending it in the same port. Or are you interested in a one-way cruise only? Then there will be additional flight costs.

Additional Costs

Don’t forget to factor in additional costs like port taxes, fees, and onboard spending. These can add up and should be included in your budget when considering the prices for an Alaskan cruise. Below, we give you details about additional and hidden costs.

Hidden Costs of Alaska Cruises to Watch Out For

When planning your Alaskan cruise, it’s easy to focus solely on the ticket price. However, the advertised Alaska cruise prices are often just the tip of the iceberg. Several hidden costs can sneak up on you if you’re not prepared. Let’s delve into these often-overlooked expenses that can affect the prices for an Alaskan cruise.

Port Taxes and Fees

One of the first hidden costs you’ll encounter are port taxes and fees. These are mandatory charges that are rarely included in the advertised Alaskan cruise cost. Depending on your Alaska cruise itinerary, these can add up to several hundred dollars per person. These charges are usually paid upfront when you pay for your cruise or added to your onboard account, so it’s crucial to budget for them when considering the Alaskan cruise cost.

Personal Experience : Governed taxes, port expenses, and fees were added to our booking components to our reservation process. Below, you can see the example.

While some cruise lines include gratuities in the overall cost, many do not. You’ll need to budget for tips, ranging from $13 to $20 per person daily. These are usually automatically added to your onboard account but are often overlooked.

Personal Experience: During our 10-night Inside Passage cruise on Norwegian Sun , we were surprised to find that we were charged $20 per person per day for gratuities. We had missed this information when booking the cruise. We always tip. It’s normal. But those gratuities were added to our bill even if we spent the whole day outside the ship and even ate all our meals in the port. It’s worth paying attention to this detail and adding the cost to your budget to avoid any surprises.

Agnes and Chris on the cruise ship drinking wine with the sea view, we had to pay additional gratuities in our Alaska cruise cost.

Internet and Communication

Staying connected at sea is not cheap. Internet packages can cost upwards of $25 per day, and onboard messaging apps may also come with a fee. Make sure to factor these into your budget if staying connected is essential for you.

Personal Experience: Our Alaska cruise price included 150 minutes of free Wi-Fi per person in our package. This was a great solution and was enough for basic usage, like checking emails and social media. We didn’t have to spend a fortune on the Internet.

Onboard Activities and Amenities

While many activities on the ship are included in your ticket price, some come with an additional fee. For example, amenities like spa treatments, specialty fitness classes, and certain onboard activities like laser tag or go-kart racing can add to your Alaskan cruise prices.

Our Tip: Get to know your cruise ship’s offer. Price lists of services are available on the cruise lines’ websites. Then, you can set a specific budget for your pleasures on the ship, such as massages or beauty treatments.

Specialty Dining

Most cruises offer various dining options, but not all of them are included in your ticket price. Specialty restaurants often require an additional fee or a la carte pricing, which can quickly add up if you’re a foodie looking to explore different cuisines.

Personal Experience : On our cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun, we opted for the Meal Specialty Dining Package. This allowed us to choose one dinner in one of the ship’s specialty restaurants. It was a great way to experience gourmet dining without the extra cost, as it was included in our package.

Chris eating dinner- Specialty Dining - free package included in our Alaska cruise price.

Unlimited Beverage Package

Many cruisers opt for an Unlimited Beverage Package to make their onboard experience more enjoyable. However, it’s essential to read the fine print. The package usually covers drinks priced under $15. You’ll have to pay the difference if you order a more expensive drink.

Personal Experience : We found that the Unlimited Beverage Package had its limitations. While it was great for mixed drinks and beers, it posed a challenge for wine and Scotch enthusiasts. Most better wines and premium Scotch were priced just above the $15 limit. After much searching and tasting, we found some wines under $15 that we enjoyed. Cocktails under $15 were excellent.

Alaska Shore Excursions

Shore excursions are one of the most exciting parts of any Alaskan cruise but can also be one of the most expensive. Whether it’s a helicopter tour of a glacier or a kayaking adventure, these activities are generally not included in the cost of an Alaskan cruise and can range from $70 to over $600 per activity.

Our Tip: Check out our guide to the best Alaska Shore Excursions with many tips because we’ve made a lot of tours, from whale watching, bear watching, scenic train rides, helicopter rides, and historical tours. It will help you to choose shore tours that suit your needs and budget.

Travel Insurance

While optional, travel insurance is highly recommended, especially for a significant investment like an Alaskan cruise. The cost can vary, but expect to pay around $100 to $200 per person for basic coverage.

Souvenirs and Onboard Shopping

The opportunities to shop onboard are plentiful, from duty-free shops to art auctions. However, these purchases can add up quickly and are not usually considered when considering the average cost of an Alaskan cruise.

By being aware of these hidden costs, you can budget more accurately and avoid surprises that could damage your dream Alaska vacation. The next section will discuss whether these additional costs make an Alaskan cruise worth it.

Shore Excursions: Are They Worth It?

One of the most exciting aspects of an Alaskan cruise is the opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes and unique cultures of the ports you’ll visit. Shore excursions offer a convenient way to do this, but they come at a price. So, the question arises: Are these excursions worth the additional cost of an Alaskan cruise?

Types of Shore Excursions

Alaskan cruises offer a wide range of shore excursions, from helicopter tours of glaciers to wildlife watching, whale watching, scenic train raids, and kayaking adventures. The activities you can participate in are as diverse as Alaska itself.

Cost of Shore Excursions

Shore excursions can significantly impact your Alaskan cruise prices. Prices can range from as low as $70 for a simple walking tour to over $600 for more extravagant experiences like a helicopter tour. Budgeting for these activities is essential, especially if you plan to participate in multiple excursions. The average price per person per tour is $200.

Value vs. Cost

While these excursions can be pricey, they often offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences that are hard to replicate. For example, how often do you get the chance to kayak near a glacier or take a dog sled ride? These unique experiences can make the additional cost worthwhile.

Do It Yourself Alternatives

If you’re on a tight budget, there are DIY alternatives. Many ports offer local tours and activities at a fraction of the cost of official shore excursions. However, these come with their own set of challenges, such as coordinating transportation and ensuring you return to the ship on time.

Personal Experience : We invested in several shore excursions during our Alaskan cruise and found them worth every penny. We took a shore excursion in each of our ports of call. The experiences were thrilling and well-organized, making for hassle-free adventures. Some we booked via our cruise line, and some we DIY. Pros and cons of each solution read in our article: Alaska Shore Excursions on Your Own.

By weighing the cost against the value of the experiences offered, you can decide whether shore excursions are worth the investment for you. The following section will explore additional expenses when budgeting for your Alaskan cruise.

Additional Costs to Consider

While we’ve covered the major factors that contribute to the cost of an Alaskan cruise, there are some additional expenses that you should be aware of. These costs may not be the first things that come to mind when planning your cruise, but they can add up and should be included in your budget.

Unless you live near the departure port, you’ll likely need to fly to the city where your cruise begins. Airfare can vary widely depending on your location and the time of year. Make sure to factor this into your overall Alaskan cruise cost.

Personal Experience: We found that Seattle is a fantastic port to start and end your cruise. The city offers a wide range of domestic and international flight connections, making it convenient for travelers. Plus, Seattle is not an overwhelmingly large city, and the cruise port is located downtown, adding to the ease of travel. Moreover, Seattle is a great weekend getaway to extend your stay.

Pre-Cruise and Post-Cruise Hotel Stays

Many people choose to arrive a day or two before the cruise departs or stay a few days after it ends to explore the departure or arrival city. Hotel costs can range from $100 to $300 per night, depending on the location and quality of the hotel.

While not mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended for any cruise, especially one as significant as an Alaskan cruise. Basic coverage can cost around $100 to $200 per person and provide peace of mind in unexpected events like medical emergencies or trip cancellations.

Transportation to and from the Port

Getting to and from the port will incur some costs, whether a taxi, Uber, a shuttle, or public transportation. Budget at least $20 to $70 for this, depending on the distance and mode of transportation.

Onboard Spending Money

While onboard, you might want to shop, try your luck at the casino, or enjoy some premium beverages. Setting aside some spending money for these activities is a good idea.

Savoring Local Flavors: Budgeting for Meals in Alaskan Ports

While the cruise ship offers a variety of dining options, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore local cuisine during your time in the ports of call. Eating on land can be a delightful experience, but it’s essential to budget for this as it can affect your overall Alaskan cruise cost.

Types of Food Available

From fresh seafood in Juneau to local delicacies in Skagway, each port offers a unique culinary experience. Whether you’re looking for fine dining or a quick bite, you’ll find various options to suit your taste and budget.

Cost of Meals on Land

The cost of eating out can vary widely depending on the port and the type of restaurant. Casual dining spots may charge around $20 to $40 per meal, while upscale restaurants can cost $30 to $50 per person or more.

Budget-Friendly Options

If you want to save money, consider local food trucks, markets, or small eateries that offer authentic and budget-friendly meals. These can be a great way to experience local flavors without breaking the bank. Or pack some snacks and a bottle of water for your shore excursions.

Personal Experience : We found that setting aside a budget for meals on land allowed us to enjoy local foods without worrying about overspending. It also added a layer of cultural experience to our trip, making it even more memorable. But it was pricey. We paid $120 for two and a glass of wine in Icy Straight Point for lunch in Skagway for $20. For a grilled salmon $20. These are just some examples.

By accounting for these additional costs, you’ll have a more accurate picture of the average cost for an Alaskan cruise and can budget accordingly. In the next section, we’ll share some tips on how to save money without compromising the quality of your experience.

What is the Average Price of a 7-day Cruise to Alaska in 2024?

We looked into the average pricing for a one-week Alaska cruise set for 2024. We focused on the top five cruise lines consistently receiving positive customer reviews. We picked the peak season for our study, specifically mid-July 2024.

All the cruises we considered start and finish in Seattle, Washington, and include a mandatory stop in Victoria, Canada—important to mention due to passport requirements for Alaska cruises . While the itineraries differ slightly, they all feature the stunning Inside Passage.

Most of the cruises last for 7 nights, except for Norwegian, which offers a 9-night cruise during the dates we examined. We gathered our data from Cruise Direct and provided pricing for one adult person, both an inside cabin (no window) and a pricier balcony cabin. The cost for a cabin with a window typically falls somewhere in between. Note that the prices don’t cover tips, drink charges, or any other hidden fees.

Cruise prices change over time; individual lines have different deals, so these are the average prices that we analyzed over several weeks to write this article.

A reasonable budget for a 7-day Alaskan cruise (Inside Passage route), including some shore excursions and extra amenities, could range from $3,000 to $5,000 per person.

Our Personal Experience: How Much We Paid for Our Alaskan Cruise?

So, you’re wondering what the real price tag is for an Alaska cruise, factoring in all the extra expenses we’ve discussed in this article? We’re an open book and happy to share our complete budget, including any additional costs we encountered.

We opted for a 10-night stay aboard the Norwegian Sun, choosing an inside cabin with no window to keep costs down. We skipped any extra paid activities or dining options on the ship.

That said, we didn’t hold back regarding shore excursions at each port we stopped at. For details on the specific excursions we took—like whale and bear watching, scenic train journeys, and more—check out our separate article on the subject.

Here’s the full breakdown of our Alaska cruise expenses, including the cruise itself and extra trips, airfare, hotel stays, etc.

Chart with our Alaska cruise expenses, including the cruise itself and extra trips, airfare, hotel stays, etc.

Could we have cut costs further? Honestly, we couldn’t have trimmed down the expenses on the cruise ship any more than we did. We already skipped all the extra paid activities, so it could have been pricier if we’d indulged in those.

The only areas where we could have saved money were by skipping the shore excursions or forgoing the local delicacies like fresh salmon or crab at the ports. But doing so would have meant missing out on the true essence of Alaska, its unique attractions, and its incredible wildlife. In the end, we don’t regret spending a single penny.

Pro Tip : If you are curious about how much it costs to travel by land in Alaska, you can look at our article How much is a trip to Alaska for two where we analyzed the cost of a 10-day itinerary – a road trip from Anchorage . When planning such a trip, the article about planning a trip to Alaska will also be helpful.

Planning an Alaskan cruise is no small feat, and as our comprehensive guide illustrates, there are numerous factors to consider when budgeting for this experience. From the type of cruise line and cabin to the hidden costs like port taxes and onboard amenities, the actual price of an Alaskan cruise can be significantly higher than the initial ticket price. Yet, as our personal experience shows, the value of the journey often outweighs the cost.

The allure of Alaska’s breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, and rich cultural experiences make it a destination worth every penny. While it’s possible to cut corners here and there, some experiences, like shore excursions and sampling local cuisine, are integral to the Alaskan adventure and shouldn’t be missed.

Traveling to Alaska on a cruise is the best option to experience the natural beauty and wildlife of the state. For many, planning for an Alaska cruise can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to budgeting. Having been on many Alaska cruises now, we are here to help. We have put together this complete breakdown of Alaska cruise prices for 2023. This way, you will know the exact Alaska cruise cost before setting sail.

First, it’s important to understand that the costs of an Alaska cruise can vary widely depending on several factors, like your cabin category . Not to mention, there will be associated costs not tied directly to the cruise fare.

Plus, how far in advance you book the trip and the time of year you cruise can also affect the Alaska cruise price. So, you could easily spend anywhere from $2,000 a person to several times that amount depending on your choices.

Our Exclusive Video on How Much Does an Alaska Cruise Cost

When putting together your budget, be sure to know all of the associated costs of an Alaska Cruise. The most important items to budget for include:

  • Cruise fare (plus taxes and fees): This is largely impacted by the itinerary, cruise line, time of year, and the type of cabin.
  • Airfare/Transportation: Most cruisers will need to fly to the Pacific Northwest to board an Alaska cruise. Even if you are local to a departure port, you will still incur expenses traveling to and from the port, parking, etc.
  • Shore Excursions: While the cruise fare covers most of the onboard charges, you will also need to budget for activities ashore. Keep in mind that Alaska cruise excursions are among the most expensive and can vary greatly in price.
  • Onboard Purchases: These are additional amenities and experiences on your cruise ship not covered in the cruise fare.
  • Hotel Accommodations: Given the travel time to get to Alaska, some cruisers might need to extend the trip. This could mean a night or two at a hotel before or after the cruise.
  • Travel Insurance: For an Alaska cruise, this is especially important. Travelers should make sure this trip is protected for any unforeseen circumstances. These costs tend to be around $150 to $300 a person, depending on the coverage.

How Much Are Cruise Fares on an Alaska Cruise?

When it comes to choosing the right cruise ship for your Alaska cruise , cost will vary by cruise line. Currently, we have seen a trend of cruise prices increasing across the board in 2023, when compared to previous years.

Mainstream cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line , offer Alaska cruises in 2023 starting as low as $890 a person (double occupancy) for a seven night roundtrip cruise out of Seattle. Still, on that same ship, Carnival Luminosa, the voyage jumps up to $3,000 a person for a suite.

Competitor cruise line Royal Caribbean is advertising cruise prices for the 2023 Alaska cruise season starting as low as $770 a person (double occupancy) for a similar itinerary. Yet, a suite on the ship will cost just under $2,000 a person for the same week.

How Much Does Alaska Cruise Cost

Premium cruise line Celebrity Cruises’ least expensive roundtrip Alaska cruise from Seattle starts at $807 a person (double occupancy). A suite in the ship’s exclusive Retreat is going for over $4,000 a person. Although, this fare includes many upgrades, like a drink package, exclusive restaurant access, WiFi, and gratuities.

Although, the family-focused Disney Cruise Line is one of the most expensive Alaska cruises . A roundtrip cruise from Vancouver starts at $1,050 per person for a family of 4 (or $1283 per person at double occupancy). If the same family of 4 wants to sail in a concierge level cabin, the total cost is $5875 per person (or $8950 per person at double occupancy).

So, as you can see, Alaska cruise prices do vary based on the cruise line and even by cabin category on the same ship.

Keep in mind the prices above are just to give you a sense of the relative pricing. Prices are subject to change.

Comparing Alaska Cruise Costs by Cabin Category

Regardless of cruise line, most ships offer similar types of staterooms or cabins. Typical cabin categories include Inside, Outside, Balcony (Verandah), and Mini-Suites/Suites.

So, it might be better to begin your budget around the type of cabin.

Some cruisers do not care about accommodations and want to book the least expensive room. Others will want a balcony cabin to admire the views.

What it is like on the first Princess Cruises cruise

Similarly, some might want the upgrades of a suite. Once you know the ballpark for these room categories, you can begin investigating cruise lines.

Based on our research, Alaska cruise fares for 2023 (inclusive of taxes and fees) have the following ranges.

  • Inside Cabins – $700-$1200 a person
  • Ocean Views – $800-$2000 a person
  • Balconies – $1100-$2800 a person
  • Mini Suites/Suites – $1500-$3500+ a person

These are approximate values on reviewing several cruise lines and ships for 7-night roundtrip cruises from Seattle at double occupancy. Of course, you might find rates cheaper (or more expensive) depending on the factors above.

Many cruise lines do discount the second and third person in the room. This discount is usually around 50% off the cruise fare of the first and second passenger. Note, they will be paying full prices for taxes and fees, which are usually $200 to $400 per person.

Thus, the per person fare will be different when averaged across all of the passengers in a stateroom.

How Much Does an Alaska Cruise Cost

For instance, an inside cabin on a roundtrip cruise on Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess out of Seattle, WA leaving on April 30th starts at about $720 a person at double occupancy. For a family of 4, the cabin is $2484 for a total of $621 a person.

A standard balcony cabin on the same sailing is currently $1,017 a person at double occupancy. So, an increase of 30% from the inside room rate. A family of four in the same balcony cabin would be paying over $3,600 for the cabin, so an average of $900 a person.

Of course, you may stumble upon a deal or promotion, like “kids sail free” or free perks with certain bookings making one cruise line a better option.

Alaska Cruise Costs by Time of Year

By and large, the cheapest times of year to go on an Alaska cruise are the shoulder seasons. This is the beginning and the end of the cruise season. Thus, sailings during late April/May and September/early October usually have the lowest Alaska cruise prices.

The most expensive time to cruise to Alaska is the middle of the season, usually July. This is the peak time of year as there is the warmest weather and coincides with summer vacation.

For instance, if you wanted to go on the same Princess cruise above in July, a balcony cabin for two people is just over $2,000 a person. Likewise, for a family of four, the total for a balcony cabin would be $6,392 (or $1,598 per person).

So, if you have your heart set on sailing during the middle of the summer, make sure to budget accordingly.

Does an Alaska Cruise Cost More for Certain Itineraries?

When going on an Alaska cruise, travelers have the option to sail either one-way or roundtrip itineraries.

One-way cruises start in one port, usually Vancouver, and end in another destination (like Whittier, Alaska). The two most common departure ports for roundtrip cruises are Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC.

Comparing fares, one-way trips generally have lower starting fares than roundtrip itineraries. But, there is a good chance that you will pay more for flights on one-way cruises.

How Much Does an Alaska Cruise Cost

For roundtrip cruises, comparing seven-day itineraries from both Seattle and Vancouver, we do not find a discernible pattern.

Essentially, the prices are very close, and vary from week to week and from cruise line to cruise line. Thus, there is no benefit to picking one departure point over the other when it comes to Alaska cruise prices.

Ultimately, when deciding on an Alaska cruise itinerary, it really comes down to picking the option with the ports you want to visit.

BOOKING BONUS: SCORE ADDITIONAL PERKS WHEN YOU BOOK YOUR NEXT CRUISE !

How Much are Shore Excursions on an Alaska Cruise?

If all of these Alaska cruise costs are making you feel a little stressed out, then the pricing of Alaska shore excursions might just put you over the edge.

On our Alaska cruises, we have done a mix of land-based walking tours, as well as helicopter rides and float plane adventures. Not to mention glacier viewing, bear watching, zip lines, whale watching, and even visiting a bald eagle preserve.

Mendehall Glacier Visitor Center

Sure, there are plenty of reasonably priced tours that give you the authentic Alaskan experience, or you can even explore some of the small Alaskan towns on your own for free.

For instance, you can book a city tour with a stop at Mendenhall Glacier for around $70 a person. But, if you want to upgrade to include a full day of sightseeing, whale watching, and a salmon bake, that will cost over $200 a person.

For the ultimate experience, you can take one of the helicopter tours to see the nearby icefields in Juneau. These start at around $450 a person. If you want to combine a helicopter tour with a dog sledding adventure, that will easily be over $600 a person.

The most popular shore excursion in Alaska is the White Pass Summit railroad in Skagway. Alone, this tour is around $140 per person for the roundtrip ride. There are also several combo tours that cost over $200. Still, you can take a walking tour of Skagway or a bus tour for between $70 and $100 per person.

White Pass Railway in Skagway Alaska

During our trips, we have averaged around $150 to $200 per person, per port for our shore excursion costs. So, with 4 to 5 ports of call, cruisers can easily spend upwards of $500 to over $1,000 on excursions.

Budgeting for Airfare for an Alaska Cruise

This is obvious, but depending on where you live and your departure port, you will need to calculate in the cost of flights.

If you are taking a one-way cruise either leaving or ending in Seward, Alaska, you will need to fly to Anchorage. Let’s just say that it’s not cheap or convenient. Not to mention, the increasing costs to fly in 2023 .

Even if you are cruising round-trip from Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC, flights are not as abundant as popular cruise ports in Florida.

Things to See in Seattle on a Cruise

A good rule of thumb is to budget between $500 to $1000 per person for airfare for an Alaska cruise.

Although, at peak times, you could spend more than that to get to more remote departure points.

Don’t forget to factor in luggage fees and other related costs, like airport parking, and transport to and from the cruise port.

Given the time travel, many cruisers will want to consider spending at least one pre-cruise day at a hotel, and possibly even a post cruise day. For popular departure ports like Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC, even a modest hotel during Alaska cruise season can go for $200 to $300 a night.

Hotels with more amenities, better locations, or premium brands can run upwards of $500 a night.

What are Additional Costs for an Alaska Cruise?

Except for luxury cruise lines, your fare will not include onboard gratuities . These typically run $13-$18 a person, per day, depending on your cabin category.

Also referred to as “service charges”, these additional daily costs go to your room attendant, dining staff, and other crew members who work hard to make your cruise a special vacation.

Many cruise lines now give you the option to pre-pay these charges before cruising so you can budget accordingly. If you do not get that option or chose not to pre-pay, expect $100 or so per person in general gratuities to be added to your bill at the end of the cruise.

Alcoholic Beverages

Unless you are sailing on a luxury cruise line, odds are your cruise fare does not include alcoholic beverages. Of course, you can pay a la carte. Most cruise lines price beer around $7, cocktails between $9 and $15, and a variety of wines around $9 to $15 a glass.

Or, you could opt for a drink package. Often, drink packages run between $75-$125 a day, per person, depending on the drink package and cruise line.

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Each cruise line has slightly different packages and inclusions. Still, if you do like to enjoy a few cocktails while on vacation, investigating these packages could save you money in the long term.

Now, some cruise lines offer package deals that include drink packages for certain room categories. So, upgrading your room could pay for itself if you get one of these free perks.

Specialty Dining

On most ships, there are plenty of complimentary dining venues and food offerings. However, if you do want to try out some of the specialty restaurants, you could easily spend a few hundred dollars more on dining.

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Many cruise lines now also offer dining packages to help reduce the costs of specialty dining. Most lines will let you buy a drink package and/or a dining package during the first few days of your sailing, so you don’t have to make that decision before boarding.

If you want to stay in touch while onboard, you will need to purchase the cruise line’s WiFi. The additional costs for internet tends to run between $15 to $25 per day, per device. Prices vary based on internet speed and number of devices.

Holland America Line Bar Guide

Although, when cruising in Alaska you should check with your mobile provider. If you have coverage when docked at the ports of call, you might not need to purchase internet for the few sea days.

Souvenirs or Onboard Purchases

Like any vacation, you could rack up additional costs for things like souvenirs, meals and snacks ashore, or any other general shopping or gaming while onboard. How much to allocate for these additional purchases varies for all travel parties.

We collect ornaments and t-shirts from the destinations we visit. So, the wife and I always budget around $100-$200 for these purchases.

Alaska Cruise Tours

Sometimes, travelers to Alaska extend the entire trip with a Cruisetour. A cruisetour adds extra days to your cruise, on either the front or the back end, with a portion of your trip occurring on land. These often include scenic rail tours with overnights in nearby lodges and hotels.

These cruisetours can add several hundreds of dollars per person to the cruise fare. The only good thing is that all of your tours and transfers during the land portion will be included and arranged for you.

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

For instance, Princess Cruises offers a 10-day Alaska cruise tour that includes 3 days on land with a 7-day cruise. These depart from Vancouver, with one way travel Northbound to Whittier, then a 3-day land rail to Denali National Park. Or vice versa.

Comparing a few dates for the Alaska Cruisetour, the per person costs for a couple is about $1300, close to double the cost of the cheapest roundtrip cruise.

Complete Breakdown of Alaska Cruise Costs

To recap, Alaska cruise costs vary greatly depending on the cruise line you choose, the cabin type you pick, the time of year you sail, and the onboard purchases and upgrades you opt for during your cruise.

However, below are some general pricing guidelines for the principal costs of an Alaska cruise.

So, we think it is reasonable to budget anywhere between $2,000 to upwards of $5,000 a person for an Alaska cruise. Thus, it is not too crazy to think that an Alaska cruise could cost a family of 4 close to $10,000 on the cheap end, once all costs are considered.

This is especially true if you are traveling from far away to get to the departure point. Or, if you opt for an upgraded shore excursion or two while traveling.

But, cruising to Alaska is well worth the costs! It is truly an unforgettable trip.

Love the break down and appreciate you being “realistic” (when sometimes others are focused on how cheaply you can do something (i.e., not necessarily realistic))…. Anyway ….. we are booked for August on Norwegian + 7 days on land (on our own, not a cruise tour). I cannot find anywhere that I am willing to cut that is going to get this price under $15k – – – AND we used frequent flyer miles to get us to Vancouver. I will report back after our trip on how much the actual cost ended up, but we are planning on around $17k. Help me choose: which Alaska Cruise is right for me?

Alaska's impressive southern coastlines contain hordes of island archipelagos, deep fjords and ancient glaciers. Nearly all of the area is roadless, so seafaring vessels, including cruise ships, are a popular way for visitors to experience these pristine areas.

Large cruise companies sail Alaska's Inside Passage from Seattle , Washington and Vancouver , and on through the Gulf of Alaska to Seward or Whittier. In between, passengers usually stop in Ketchikan , Juneau and Skagway , and then sail up College Fjord to see glaciers stretching their icy fingers into the sea. You'll see plenty of stunning scenery along the way but not up close – for most cruisers, it's more than enough to satisfy.

Smaller cruises max out at around 200 passengers and can nose into Southeast Alaska's nooks and crannies, launching skiffs and kayaks from their lower decks for an immersive shore visit full of exploration. These vessels may not stop in local ports, instead anchoring at night and offering guests the chance to hike a remote shoreline, whale-watch from a kayak or attend a presentation by indigenous artisans. If any ports are visited, they're likely to be smaller communities like Wrangell, Sitka, Petersburg and Yakutat.

Additionally, with the Northwest Passage now open to marine traffic, the northwestern city of Nome is a regular port of call for higher-end, midsize cruise lines to expose passengers to the rural reaches of coastal Alaska. The Aleutian Island city of Unalaska is also on some boutique cruise line itineraries, so check carefully that the region that sparks your interest.

Which part of Alaska should I choose to cruise?

For an overview of Alaska The standard Inside Passage cruise between Vancouver or Seattle and Seward or Whittier is an excellent choice, boasting beautiful scenery and the chance to experience a route taken by steamships of the late 1800s. You’ll get a snapshot of the Tongass National Forest , glaciers and the occasional whale or bear, but not up close unless you’re on a specific shore excursion. Holland America, Cunard and Viking all have cruises that fit this itinerary.

Taking a deep dive into Alaska’s coastal regions   Book a small ship cruise between Sitka, Ketchikan, and Juneau for a week or longer in the nooks and crannies of southeast Alaska. You’ll hike where there are no trails, paddle without another human in sight, and get to know the traditional lands of Alaska’s Coastal Native tribes. We like Alaskan Dream Cruises, UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions for smaller, more sustainable cruises.

To discover Alaska’s rich history You can’t skip Ketchikan, Juneau or Skagway on an itinerary. Juneau is the state capital and a former mining community. Ketchikan once was a major player in the timber industry and has a sordid past steeped in bootlegging and brothels. Skagway was a jumping-off point for the Klondike Gold Rush beyond Chilkoot Pass and has an old railroad to prove it. All three cities are often on large ship itineraries.

Explore Alaska’s most remote coastal areas Consider a luxury midsize (or smaller) cruise to places like Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands or to the northwestern city of Nome. Both combine a look at the rugged, raw coastlines with time spent on shore in towns with few frills. Weather can often be cold, rainy and windy, but if you want a unique adventure in Alaska, check out the itineraries from Hurtigruten.

When should I go?

Depending on the cruise line, sailings begin in late April and continue through to early October. The most dependable weather typically appears in July and August, but that's also the most popular (and expensive) time; pick a trip earlier or later in the season for cheaper passage and shore excursions.

For spring and fall passengers, know that temperatures will be cooler than you might expect and variable types of precipitation, including snow showers, aren't unusual. In the summer, it's still cool on deck and near glaciers, so don't expect a lot of outdoor pool time or sunbathing on board.

If spotting wildlife is a priority, consider cruising during the salmon runs, when bears are most active and can be spotted from the decks of the ship. Humpback whales often follow schools of herring and other small fish during the summer and can be seen anytime between May and September before they migrate to Hawaii or Mexico .

How do I know my cruise line is operating sustainably?

While all travel has environmental and cultural impacts, cruising leaves its mark to varying degrees on Alaska's fragile ecosystems. The average large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than 12,000 cars and produce up to a ton of trash each day. While there can be a positive economic impact on ports of call, a small community visited by 15,000 people per day during sailing season can intrinsically change.

The industry's trade group Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) touts a desire for "conscious cruising." They have guidelines for water conservation and upgrades to heating, air-conditioning and ventilation, with a goal for ships to be net zero by 2050. There is also a focus on respecting the cultural traditions of destinations through cooperative regenerative tourism that preserves a community's unique history, culture and values.

A view from the window on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway

What kinds of activities can we experience?

Onshore activities differ depending on the size and style of the cruise. Traditional excursions are created to fit a specific number of people, all of whom come from the ships and are expected to be in port for a specific time. They provide an overview of Alaska's history, culture, recreation and industry, and don't offer much of a personal touch.

Smaller boutique cruises strive to immerse their guests in the wild Alaska they've researched and desire to experience. Trips to shore rarely involve large port cities except for embarking and disembarking – instead, they drop kayaks in the water from the ship or use a rubber skiff to reach a deserted shoreline for a hike. The communities they visit are usually smaller, like Petersburg, Wrangell or Haines.

  • Glacier & Wildlife Tours: Cruise for a few hours aboard a smaller vessel to witness whales, otters, seals and icy glaciers.
  • Dogsledding: Learn about mushing, huskies and the operations of sled-dog kennels before taking a spin behind a team.
  • ATV Adventuring: Rev up for a wilderness or tundra tour aboard a four-wheeler or side-by-side vehicle.
  • Flightseeing:  Take a unique peek at Alaska's landscapes from above, spotting wildlife, and ogling glaciers and mountain ranges.
  • Alaska Native Traditions:  Learn the ways of Alaska's many tribal groups, with dancing, drumming and art displays as part of the program.
  • Ride a Historic Train:  Skagway's White Pass Yukon Railroad climbs over Chilkoot Pass for a hands-on gold-rush history tour.
  • Paddle Power:  Hop in a raft or kayak and explore Alaska's beautiful coastlines and rivers.

Need-to-know before you go

Plan for wet weather Alaska’s southeastern region is part of a rainforest, where wet conditions are the norm even in summer. Bring waterproof rain gear, sturdy shoes, a hat and gloves to stay warm and dry.

Know your physical limits If mobility or other health issues may affect your ability to enjoy a cruise to the fullest, consider traveling with a larger operator. These companies are well-versed in accessibility and have made accommodations for those with mobility needs. Smaller ships are full of trip hazards and watertight door jambs and require bending and stepping up or down to access activities like kayaking or skiff rides.

Plan your own shoreside activities There is no requirement to book excursions or activities through the cruise line. If a more independent style of exploration is your thing, feel free to do your own research ahead of time or visit each port of call’s visitor bureau upon arrival. Just be sure to adhere strictly to the ship’s boarding time.

Look to shoulder season sailings Not only will you often receive a significant discount, you’ll also be able to witness Alaska’s seasonal transitions and fewer crowds at ports of call.

Know what "all-inclusive" really means:  Drill down into the details of your cruise and ask questions about meals, alcoholic beverages, activities and shore trips. It may be that a smaller cruise line will include everything at one price.

13 best all-inclusive cruise lines

Janice Wald Henderson

Editor's Note

All-inclusive cruising sounds alluring — until you realize that this phrase can mean different things to different cruise lines.

Generally speaking, all-inclusive in the cruise world means that the fare you're quoted includes the cost of your room on a ship (based on double occupancy), port fees and taxes, most meals, gratuities, and alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages.

The most inclusive cruise lines also offer complimentary Wi-Fi, airfare (economy, chartered or business class), all specialty dining (rather than only at select venues) and shore excursions — pretty much everything short of spa and salon treatments, ultrapremium wines and spirits, and purchases such as cigars.

As you might expect, all-inclusive cruises are typically found on luxury or upscale cruise lines and are priced higher because they include so much.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Beyond the truly all-inclusive cruise lines, some more affordable lines offer pricing packages that are more inclusive than the average big-ship cruise. You may be able to opt into an inclusive fare package for a higher cruise fare or get one free as a booking perk.

On some cruise lines, the highest-priced suites come with so many amenities as to make those fares all-inclusive. If you're just looking for all-inclusive alcohol, nearly every cruise line that doesn't already include alcohol in its fares will sell you an all-inclusive drink package that lets you have an open bar experience on board.

Here, we share the 13 best all-inclusive cruise lines where you can enjoy your cruise without ever pulling out your wallet.

All-inclusive cruise lines

Five lines stand out for having the most inclusive cruise fares in the industry. With so many things included in everyone's base fares, you'll mainly pay extra for spa treatments, souvenirs, some shore excursions and ultra-premium drinks.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Regent Seven Seas Cruises surely ranks as the most all-inclusive luxury line. Just be warned: With so much bundled into the fare, its prices are usually loftier than its competitors.

If tasteful opulence is your style, you will love Regent. Generously sized, all-suite accommodations feature spacious verandas. The multimillion-dollar art collection (think Picasso and Chagall) onboard the newest ships Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Grandeur astonishes; you will sail amid multiple museum-quality pieces.

This line's cruise fares include nearly every cruise-related travel expense: business-class airfare on intercontinental flights (economy airfare for domestic flights), transfers between your airport or hotel and the ship, all alternative dining (Chartreuse for Parisian-inspired fare and Pacific Rim for Asian-fusion cuisine are standouts), unlimited beverages, valet laundry service, crew gratuities, Wi-Fi and most shore excursions. Complimentary shore excursions are unlimited, so you can join a couple every day you're in port.

Guests in Concierge Suites and above can count on a one-night fancy hotel stay pre-cruise, with transfers, breakfast and porterage. Select itineraries also offer two- or three-night land programs for free.

What is extra? Spa and salon treatments, hands-on cooking classes in a state-of-the-art culinary workshop, small group or special-interest shore excursions, the fanciest wines and liquors, cigars and sundries.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, an upscale cruise and tour company known for its luxurious riverboats, now operates two 228-passenger "adventure yachts" — Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II.

These stunning ships are as sleek and sexy as any private yachts custom-built for a billionaire. Think of each as a bliss factory, churning out one mind-blowing complimentary experience after the next. The included wines and spirits are particularly noteworthy, especially the more than 100 whiskeys. Belly up to one of nine bars and sip your way through the impressive collection.

Most exploration toys, such as Zodiacs, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, are complimentary. Scenic Eclipse even carries e-bikes, an inflatable trampoline and water skis. Up to 15 onboard expedition experts (20 in polar regions) lead complimentary adventure and enrichment programs on and off the ship.

You will only pay extra for Scenic Neptune, the ship's six-seater submarine, and for a ride on the two helicopters.

Count on divine dining experiences. Sushi@Koko's skilled chefs cut the finest sashimi, flashing knives as if the fish were an art piece. Lumière prepares meticulous modern French cuisine; linger pre- or post-dinner at its sexy Champagne bar.

Seeking casually elegant — think exclusive, country club-like vibe — for an all-inclusive voyage? Meet the seven Seabourn ships, which play up luxury in a sophisticated yet laid-back style. (Seabourn Pursuit, the line's second expedition vessel, debuted in August.)

Seabourn's cruise fares include oceanfront suites with double vanities and living areas (many with private balconies), premium wines and spirits, Wi-Fi, specialty restaurants, 24-hour in-suite dining (served course-by-course), caviar whenever and wherever you like, and gratuities.

The only major add-ons to your tab are airfare and shore excursions, the fanciest wines and spirits, and spa and salon treatments.

Fine dining on Seabourn ships includes an array of complimentary gourmet restaurants, including a dedicated sushi spot and an alfresco restaurant focusing on international cuisine with a twist. The line is soon to replace The Grill by Thomas Keller with Solis, a Mediterranean restaurant focused on fresh and healthy cuisine, all made from scratch on board.

Seabourn has created a Mindful Living Program in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Weil, an esteemed pioneer in integrative medicine. The line offers complimentary classes with Dr. Weil-trained practitioners in guided meditation, as well as free Pure-Form yoga and Pilates group workouts.

Silversea Cruises

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Interested in nibbling complimentary caviar and sipping fine Champagne on all seven continents? You are not alone. Silversea Cruises delivers that fabulous perk and much more in its impressive inclusions.

This luxurious Italian-inspired line offers two types of all-inclusive travel, "Port-to-Port" and "Door-to-Door."

Port-to-Port includes all-suite accommodations, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, tuxedo-clad white-gloved butlers for all passengers, basic Wi-Fi, gratuities, laundry room usage and meals in most dining venues, including 24-hour room service with dinner served course-by-course. It also includes one complimentary shore excursion per port; the rest are available for purchase.

You will pay extra for spa treatments, cigars and other purchases like the most exclusive wines and spirits.

Expedition sailings include extra perks in their Port-to-Port fares, such as all in-country economy air travel and pre- or post-hotel night or day use, necessary equipment and gear, and expedition team-led shore excursions.

For all types of Silversea sailings, Door-to-Door travel includes all of the above plus international economy airfare (or an air credit), business-class upgrades and/or in-country flights for select itineraries, pre- and post-cruise hotel nights (depending on flight timing) and airport transfers by private executive car service. This choice aims to eliminate all travel stress, with Silversea handling every detail between your walking out your front door and returning home.

Some other points to note when contemplating Silversea and its benefits: Suites truly are suites, with separate living and sleeping areas. For instance, on the 596-passenger Silver Moon, a spacious entry-level suite rocks a cool 334 square feet. A veranda brings the total square footage up to 387 square feet.

If you book the biggest onboard suites, you are privy to even more freebies, such as valet laundry, unlimited premium Wi-Fi (for faster speed than the included plan) and dinner for two in the fabulous La Dame restaurant.

The ultimate luxury inclusion? Caviar is served whenever you like, wherever you wish to dine, with all the proper accoutrements.

Luxury cruise line Crystal re-launched in 2023, bringing back an all-inclusive onboard experience on two vessels, the 606-passenger Crystal Symphony and 740-passenger Crystal Serenity .

Fares include all ocean-view rooms with butler service for all, fine dining in multiple venues (including one complimentary reservation at Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa Restaurant and Sushi Bar and Osteria d'Ovidio per cruise of up to 11 days), in-suite dining, all beverages, Wi-Fi, a youth program on select voyages and crew gratuities (for housekeeping, bar and dining staff).

You'll be wowed by the friendly and intuitive service on board. With a crew-to-passenger ratio of 1:1, you'll feel pampered every moment of your vacation.

Crystal's signature activities are always complimentary, whether that's lounging around the gorgeous pool by day, challenging new friends to a game of pickleball, enjoying afternoon tea in the Palm Court, ballroom dancing with gentleman hosts or attending performances in the evening.

If you have to take out your wallet, it'll be for ultra-premium liquors, gourmet wine-paired meals in the Vintage room, cigars in the Connoisseur Club, spa treatments and shore excursions.

Cruise lines with more-inclusive fares

Four cruise lines cover more costs in their cruise fares than the average line, but not as many things as the truly all-inclusive lines. We refer to these lines as more-inclusive, not all-inclusive.

If you love a port-intensive cruise on a smaller, upscale ship, Azamara might be the cruise line for you.

Cabins on its older ships are compact yet cozy, with a modern look, but you won't spend much time in them. That's because the line prioritizes getting you to multiple ports and spending as much time as possible on land, with longer stays and evenings ashore.

In keeping with the line's destination focus, Azamara offers a complimentary AzAmazing Celebration on board or ashore on nearly every cruise. These exclusive, no-cost events highlight local culture and performers, often with exclusive access to cool locations.

Related: The ultimate guide to Azamara

Also included in every Azamara guest's fares are nonalcoholic drinks (such as specialty coffees and teas, soda and bottled water), as well as an assortment of standard liquors, wine and beer. Crew gratuities and self-service laundry are also included in your fare.

However, you will still have to pay for premium drinks, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, spa treatments and tours.

Azamara does offer several extra-fee packages to make its inclusive fares even more inclusive. Its five "Experience More" packages bundle together extra-fee items (shore excursion credit, Wi-Fi, premium beverages, spa credit, laundry and/or Chef's Table dining) for a roughly 30% discount compared with purchasing those amenities a la carte.

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Whether you're sailing Viking 's ocean or river voyages, or the new Viking Expeditions, this cruise line delivers many inclusions for a company that insists it's not a luxury company.

Here's what Viking includes on ocean and expedition sails: one complimentary shore excursion in each port; Wi-Fi; alternative restaurant dining; 24-hour room service; thermal suite spa access; beer, wine and soft drinks with onboard lunches and dinner; specialty coffee, tea and bottled water; and self-service launderettes. If you purchase airfare through Viking, ground transfers are also complimentary.

River cruising also includes the above, except it does not offer alternative restaurant dining, thermal suite spa access, 24-hour room service or self-service launderettes on board.

Cabins are a notch above what you'll find on other premium ships. They come with upscale amenities, such as king-size beds rather than queens, and bathrooms with spacious glass-enclosed showers, heated bathroom floors and anti-fog mirrors.

Perhaps what passengers rave about the most is complimentary access to the Nordic Spa and that awesome thermal suite mentioned above. Breathe deep in the steam bath or sauna, freeze your you-know-what off in the Snow Grotto to wake up every cell (including those you never knew you had) and take a whirlpool, cold-water splash or plunge pool dip. Alternating hot and cold therapies invigorates your mind and body in the best ways.

The complimentary alternative dining inclusions are mighty fine, too. Little feels better than sitting down to an incredible meal in Manfredi's Italian restaurant and not signing a room charge at the end. No corners are cut here for a complimentary meal. Pastas are excellent, but by all means, order the signature bistecca alla Fiorentina , a Florentine-style porcini-and-spice-crusted ribeye steak that makes meat lovers swoon.

The overstuffed house-made bread basket, served with aged Parmesan chunks and high-quality balsamic vinegar and olive oil, is worth the price of admission alone — if there were one in the first place.

Oceania Cruises

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Oceania Cruises sails smaller, upscale ships with a focus on fine dining and restaurant variety. It has recently made its cruise fares more inclusive with the introduction of Simply More pricing.

All cruise fares now include free round-trip airfare plus transfers, a shore excursion credit of $600 to $1,600 per cabin to use on the guests' choice of tours in port and a beverage package that covers a selection of wine, beer and Champagne at lunch and dinner.

Oceania already includes nonalcoholic drinks (soda, specialty coffee and tea, smoothies, juice), specialty dining (including meals by celebrity chef Jacques Pepin), Wi-Fi (two devices per cabin), fitness classes and shuttles into town in port.

Virgin Voyages

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Virgin Voyages ' goal is to reimagine the cruise experience, which means that it doesn't follow the typical rules of cruising. You'll find tattoo parlors, drag shows, balcony hammocks and a novel approach to fare inclusions.

Onboard Wi-Fi and crew tips — typically extra charges on most mainstream cruise lines — are included in everyone's cruise fare on Virgin. All of its ships' 20+ eateries are complimentary, from the vegetarian restaurant to the Korean barbecue joint, though you may have to make reservations in advance. Select nonalcoholic drinks (including soda, non-pressed juices and sparkling water) also do not incur extra fees. The line's creative and energetic fitness classes are also fee-free; other lines charge $15 to $20 for these.

Virgin does not offer an all-inclusive beverage package add-on and instead claims it offers fair prices for drinks. However, if you purchase a Bar Tab (essentially prepaying for drinks) , the line will throw in extra free money you can use on your bar bill.

Cruise lines with all-inclusive fare classes

A relatively new addition to the all-inclusive cruise fare world is the all-inclusive add-on package . Select cruise lines allow guests to opt into higher-priced fares that include more perks or purchase fare add-ons that grant them extra inclusions. The cruise lines claim that the extra fees are a savings on the a la carte price of the included amenities.

Celebrity Cruises

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Celebrity Cruises aims to be the cruise line for Gen Xers, and its newest ships are filled with dining variety, resort-worthy bars and plenty of places to grab a seat and gab with your girls, guys or significant other. Innovative cabins let fresh air in without creating under-used outdoor space. The line has also gotten creative with options for more inclusive fares.

Celebrity lets cruisers choose from two fare types: Cruise-Only or All Included. Cruise-Only fares get you the standard cruise amenities, such as meals in the main dining room and buffet, a short list of nonalcoholic drinks (drip coffee, iced tea, juice from a machine at breakfast) and traditional onboard entertainment.

Upgrade to the All-Included fare, and you'll pay more but get more inclusions. (Prices vary by ship, itinerary and sail date.) These fares cover a Classic Drinks Package and Celebrity's Basic Wi-Fi plan. The fares used to cover crew gratuities, but that perk has been phased out.

Alternatively, if you book upper-category cabins and suites, your base fares will include additional perks. Passengers in AquaClass accommodations receive exclusive access to the Blu restaurant, a complimentary thermal suite pass, free fitness classes and discounted spa packages.

Related: Everything you want to know about Celebrity cabins and suites

Suite guests receive a premium drinks package, premium Wi-Fi, 24-hour in-suite dining and specialty coffees, and exclusive access to the Luminae restaurant and suites-only lounge and sun deck. These fares include concierge and butler service, as well.

Windstar Cruises

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Windstar Cruises ' hallmark is casual luxury, so the line lets guests choose how inclusive they want their fares to be.

The line's base prices get you a nicely appointed stateroom, dining in multiple venues with menus by James Beard Foundation-affiliated chefs, and nonalcoholic beverages (such as soft drinks and specialty coffees). Take your pick from small, luxury cruise ships with spacious suites to motorized sailing yachts with gorgeous sails.

If you want one-and-done pricing, passengers can choose All-Inclusive Fares for an additional $89 per person per day. With this plan, guests receive complimentary Wi-Fi, prepaid hotel and beverage gratuities, and an unlimited beverage package, which includes all beers, 33 different wines by the glass, 40 house and select brands of liquor, cocktails made with the included liquors and minibar items.

Princess Cruises

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

The Love Boat cruise line explores the world on big, but not too big ships, with a particular focus on Alaska sailings . It welcomes everyone from families with kids to retired couples with a variety of onboard offerings and inclusive fare options to suit a variety of budgets and preferences.

Princess Cruises offers its guests two ways to make their cruise experience more inclusive. The Princess Plus Package costs $60 per person per day and includes a Plus Beverage Package (covering drinks priced up to $15 each), Wi-Fi on one device per passenger, two meals at casual extra-fee restaurants, two fitness classes, two premium desserts, unlimited juice bar drinks, free room service delivery and tips for the crew.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship

For a more all-inclusive experience, guests can purchase the Princess Premier Package at $80 per person per day. With this elevated program, passengers receive a Premier Beverage Package (covering drinks priced up to $20 each), Wi-Fi on up to four devices per passenger, tips for the crew, two meals per guest in the line's extra-fee specialty restaurants, unlimited meals in the extra-fee casual restaurants, unlimited premium desserts and juice bar drinks, free room service delivery, a photo package of three prints plus unlimited digital files and reserved theater seating.

Holland America

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Holland America is Princess Cruises' sister line and Alaska rival. It sails midsized ships around the world, catering to a mature cruiser who loves live music, fine dining and a classic cruise experience.

The cruise line also has a similar all-inclusive add-on to its sister. The line's Have It All fares include a shore excursion credit of $100, $200 or $300 per person (based on length of sailing); a Signature Beverage Package covering alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks priced up to $11 per drink; one, two or three comped meals in the line's specialty dining restaurants (based on length of cruise); and a Wi-Fi Surf Package, HAL's basic Wi-Fi package.

The cost to make your cruise all-inclusive is $55 per person per day, added to your cruise fare, and applies only to the first and second guests in each cabin.

Cruise lines with all-inclusive promotions

A few cruise lines take a different approach to all-inclusive cruising and offer inclusions as booking promotions . Depending on the current offer, you are entitled to a slew of included amenities or your choice of only a few.

Norwegian Cruise Line

all inclusive alaska cruise cost

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its anything-goes attitude: Eat where you want, dress how you like, enjoy the ship as you see fit. Its megaships are known for their variety of dining and drinking venues, as well as onboard attractions that include Broadway-caliber entertainment, go-kart tracks , laser tag, VR game rooms and crazy water slides. Many of the attractions come with fees, so it's easy to find yourself pulling out your wallet again and again on board.

To combat that, NCL has been running some version of its Free at Sea promotion for years, which offers complimentary amenities to make your cruise fare a little or a lot more inclusive. Depending on the current offer, you might be eligible for all the amenities or you might get a choice of some number of them depending on the type of cabin you book.

The included perks vary, but are usually an Open Bar beverage package (covering drinks up to $15 each), one to three free meals for two people in specialty restaurants on board (depending on type of cabin and length of cruise), a $50 shore excursion credit for one person in each port, 75-300 minutes of free Wi-Fi each for two people (based on length of cruise), and complimentary or $99 third and fourth guest fares on select sailings. Sometimes free airfare (buy one ticket and the second guest flies free) is part of the promotion, as well.

Note that guests must pay a 20% gratuity on the value of the Open Bar beverage package and the specialty dining package.

Norwegian also offers a paid upgrade to the Free at Sea perks called Free at Sea Plus. This add-on would upgrade your perks to a Premium Plus beverage package (including all top-shelf liquors, beer and wine plus unlimited still or sparkling bottled water, Starbucks coffee and energy drinks), two extra specialty restaurant meals, a $50 excursion credit for two guests in every port (versus one) and an unlimited Wi-Fi package (no streaming).

The additional cost is $49 per person, per day, for adults and $29 for children; solo adult travelers pay $42 per person.
