' src=

Last Updated on March 29, 2024

I had written an ode to Kerala’s backwaters in one of my earlier posts. Here I will share with you a detailed Alleppey itinerary for 2 days with best places to visit, tours and experiences to make the most of your short time.

Often touted as Venice of the East, Alleppey is known for the complex network of lagoons, lakes, and canals formed by the backwaters of Arabian Sea. Since time immemorial these waterways served as the economic backbone of the region, connecting Alleppey to other parts of Kerala and beyond.

In my Kerala itinerary I advised to drive to Alleppey from Kochi and spend one night there, before heading to Munnar . But you could also sail to Alleppey , stay for one night and return the next day.

If you are wondering, how could you possibly explore the best of Alleppey, the most famous destination of Kerala in just one or two days – you’re going to get that answer here.

A Quick Outline

Alappuzha – A Brief Background

Alappuzha, often anglicized as Alleppey, is more than just a coastal town in southern Kerala. Located in its namesake district, it’s a melting pot of cultures, religions, and natural beauty. Nearly half of its population is Hindu, followed by Christians(26%) and Muslims(~24%), making it a glowing example of unity in diversity.

alleppey travel itinerary

What sets Alapuzha apart are its brackish lagoons and lakes that lie almost parallel to the western coast of Kerala. Alleppey and Kumarakom, located on opposite sides of Vembanad Lake , are the two tourist hotspots of Kerala. While you’d love to spend days experiencing the blissful life of Alleppey, a one-night stay is sufficient for highlights.

23 Amazing Things to Do in Alleppey in One Day

Think you can’t fit over 20 things to do in just one day in Alleppey ? Well, you might not be able to do them all, but you can see a lot while sailing in the backwaters of Vembanad Lake. Let’s assume you reach Alleppey by noon and go through the list one by one.

1. Stay in a Houseboat

Backwaters of Alleppey - the best of alleppey in one or two days

Check-in to your hotel, which in this case is also your vehicle for sightseeing. Yes, it is the famous Alleppey Houseboat.

One of the most iconic experiences you can have in Alleppey is staying in a houseboat. These floating hotels offer a unique blend of luxury and tradition, making for an unforgettable stay.

Where to Get Them

You can book a houseboat in several ways. Many tourists opt to go through their resort or hotel, which often have partnerships with reputable houseboat operators.

Alternatively, you can book directly through various online platforms or even walk up to the Alleppey jetty where you’ll find numerous operators ready to show you their boats.

The cost of a houseboat stay can vary widely depending on the level of luxury you’re looking for.

A basic one-bedroom boat can start at around ₹7,000 per night, while a high-end, luxury boat can cost upwards of ₹20,000. Most prices include meals, and some even offer additional activities like fishing or village tours.

Facts You Should Know

  • Booking in Advance : Especially during peak season, houseboats get booked quickly. It’s wise to book at least a month in advance.
  • Inclusions : Make sure to check what’s included in the price. Some operators include all meals and activities, while others might charge extra.
  • Safety : Ensure the boat you’re booking has proper safety measures in place, including life jackets and fire extinguishers.
  • Timings : Most houseboats start their journey in the afternoon and return the next morning, covering various points in between.

Alternatives to Houseboats

Inside our beautiful Lake-side cottage in Alleppey. There is a wooden bed with four poles, typical of Kerala-style, lamps and lovely aesthetics.

Alternatively you could stay in a lake-view cottage or homestay. But why would you do that when you have a floating house full of luxury? I’ll give you two reasons.

Anyway, you are not going to sail in the houseboat for all night. By law, they should be anchored by 5:30 pm. Stay in a lakeview cottage with all the luxurious amenities, infinity pools, gardens right at the banks of the lake or canals. Your one-night’s tariff is slashed by almost 30%.

While a homestay may not give you the pool and jacuzzi, it gives you rich cultural experience and home-cooked food.

The second reason is the ease of exploring the backwaters. Houseboats are large and it is difficult to maneuver through the labyrinth of canals paving their way through picturesque villages. So hire a shikara instead of houseboat for your backwater tour.

2. A 5-Hour Tour of the Backwaters

alleppey travel itinerary

How will you cover so many places in one day? A 5-hour backwater tour is the short answer to it. If you are short on time, you can take a 3-hour boat tour as well and after that go on a short drive.

You have many options for this tour.

First, you can arrange a private tour through the resort where you’re staying . This is an excellent choice for those looking for a more intimate experience. The tariff for a private tour generally starts at ₹3,000 for a couple and can go up depending on the amenities offered.

Your second option is to hop on one of the larger boats that carry 10-15 people. This is a more budget-friendly choice, with prices ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per person. These bigger boats offer a communal experience that’s great for meeting other travelers.

As for the routes, most tours start from the Alleppey jetty and can take you through a variety of scenic spots.

Popular routes include sailing through Kuttanad, known as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala,” and making a stop at Pathiramanal Island, a haven for birdwatchers.

Here’s everything else you can do besides relaxing and experiencing the sheet joy of being in the cradle of nature.

3. Photography at Vembanad Lake

alleppey travel itinerary

Vembanad Lake is the longest brackish water lake in India . The largest one is Chilika Lake in Odisha – the largest lagoon in the planet.

From kingfishers and egrets to cormorants and kites, the avian life here is rich and diverse.

Many houseboats and shikara operators offer binoculars and even have local guides who can help you identify the different species.

4. Fresh Seafood Lunch at a Village on the Backwaters

Karimeen Fry

One of the highlights of any backwaters tour in Alleppey is the lunch stop, usually at a quaint village along the route.

Most tours will dock at a village in Kuttanad .

Imagine feasting on dishes like Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish marinated in spices and grilled in banana leaves) or Alleppey Fish Curry, all while taking in the scenic beauty around you.

Some operators even offer the option to dine at a local’s home, giving you a taste of authentic Keralan hospitality.

5. Explore Paddy Fields Below Sea-Level at Kuttanad

Tractor in the paddy fields of Kuttanad village of Alleppey

Kuttanad, often referred to as the “Rice Bowl of Kerala,” is a must-visit spot on your Alleppey backwaters tour. What makes this region truly unique is its paddy fields, which are situated below sea level.

It’s one of the few places in the world where farming is done up to 2 meters below sea level. The only other place where such farms exist is Netherlands , to the best of my knowledge.

As your boat glides through the backwaters, you’ll notice vast stretches of green paddy fields separated by narrow strips of land or waterways.

The intricate network of canals and waterways in Kuttanad is used for both irrigation and transportation, making it a fascinating example of how humans have adapted to their environment.

During your lunch stop or at designated points on your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to step off the boat and walk through these fields.

6. Triveni Floating Market in Kuttanad

Heard of the floating market of Bangkok? Well, the one in Kerala is no less bustling.

While on the boat, request your sailor to take you to the to Triveni floating market in Kutanad. This state-owned market operates entirely on the boats and is a vital supply chain for the remote areas of the islands.

It’s an experience that adds a layer of authenticity to your Alleppey trip, allowing you to engage with the local culture. You might also get products at cheaper rate here because of they are state-owned.

Most tourist boats don’t have this market on their standard itinerary. However, if you’re hiring a private tour, you can certainly request a stop at the Triveni Floating Market.

Details to Note

The market operates from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, giving you ample time to explore and shop.

7. Visit Pathiramanal Island

Birds sitting on the dried branches of the trees in the Vembanad lake. Bird-watching is one of the top things to do in Alleppey in one day

Next stop that’s included in all popular boat tours is the Pathiramanal Island.

Pathiramanal, which means “sands of the night,” is an uninhabited island that’s a lively sojourn of migratory birds all over the world.

Once you’re on the island, you can take a leisurely walk through the woods, try to identify the bird-species, or simply sit by the lake and enjoy the natural beauty around you.

Don’t forget to bring your camera ; the island is a photographer’s paradise.

The island is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset. It’s advisable to visit during the early morning or late afternoon for the best bird-watching experience.

There’s no entry fee to visit Pathiramanal Island!

8. Visit Chavara Bhavan

Chavara Bhavan is another must-visit spot on your Alappuzha itinerary. This ancestral home of saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara is now a spiritual shrine for the people of Kerala.

Besides being a Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, he was a great social reformer who spearheaded numerous initiatives to make education universally accessible.

Located on the banks of the Pamba River, you can reach this place only by boat. The house is preserved as a museum where you can see ancient artifacts and scriptures.

The highlight is the 250-year-old “Beemapally Chandanakudam” , a lamp that has been burning continuously since its first lighting.

The place is open to visitors from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There’s no entry fee, but donations are accepted. It’s a peaceful and enriching experience that adds a spiritual dimension to your Alleppey tour.

9. Punnamada Lake

alleppey travel itinerary

One of the most scenic spots you’ll encounter on your 5-hour boat trip is Punnamada Lake. This expansive water body is famous for hosting the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, one of the most celebrated events in Kerala.

As you sail through, you’ll be captivated by the panoramic views of lush greenery and traditional Kerala houseboats. It’s also a great spot for photography, so make sure your camera is ready.

Most boat tours start or/and end from this point.

While the lake is open for exploration throughout the day, the best time to experience its beauty is during the early morning or late afternoon. There’s no additional fee for visiting the lake as it’s usually included in your boat tour package.

If you have another day in Alleppey, you can come here for Kayaking.

10. Alleppey Lighthouse Museum

View from the Alleppey Lighthouse

You private boat tour will probably end at your resort where you are staying. If not you can ask them to drop you at the Nehru Trophy finishing point. Most group tours have a drop-point here.

From this point, hire a tuktuk and head straight to the Alleppey Lighthouse which is just 10 minutes away.

The museum isn’t just about the lighthouse; it’s a tribute to the maritime history of the region. You can explore various exhibits that delve into the life and times of sailors, the evolution of lighthouses, and much more.

It offers a spectacular panoramic view from the top, so paying Rs. 20 extra for carrying the camera inside is worth it.

The museum is open every day from 9:00 am to 11:45 pm and then again from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. So, you might be pressed for time here after the afternoon boat tour.

The entry fee is Rs. 10 for Indians and Rs. 25 for foreigners. Camera charges are extra.

11. Vijaya Beach Park & Alleppey Beach

alleppey travel itinerary

After this you can walk to the Vijaya Beach Park and Alleppey Beach. Vijaya beach park is a beautified children’s park near the Alleppey Beach, making it a perfect family-spot.

The park features a wide range of amenities like boating, a toy train, and even a Japanese garden. It’s a great place for families, especially if you’re traveling with kids. The children can enjoy the play area while the adults can take a leisurely boat ride.

Watch the sunset, enjoy the activities and walk along the clean and lively Alleppey beach to end your day.

  • The park is open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
  • The entry fee is 5 INR for adults and 3 INR for children. Additional charges apply for boating and toy train rides.

12. Authentic Kerala Cuisine For Dinner

A table full of Keralite delicacies - rice, fish, curry, dal, vegetables, fruits , dessert

We end this wholesome day of our Alleppey 2-day itinerary with a sumptuous authentic Malayali cuisine for dinner.

As the day draws to a close, retire for a good night’s sleep. We still have the time to soak in the best of Alleppey on the day of our departure.

13. Watch Sunrise at the Vembanad Lake

Sunrise at the Vembanad lake and a solitary boatman out fishing in the backwaters of alleppey. This is the highlight on one day Alleppey itinerary

On my first trip to Alleppey, we were so tired after driving all the way from Bangalore that we slept at 9pm! And I woke up before sunrise to catch the early morning views. It was mesmerizing!

14. Mulakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple

alleppey travel itinerary

Situated just a few kilometers from the main town of Alleppey in Mulakkal, the Mulakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple is a revered sanctuary dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeshwari. The origin of this 500-year-old temple is wrapped in many legends.

The temple is particularly famous for the festival ”  Mullakkal Chirappu ” which happens between November to January. During this time, the temple becomes a hub of cultural activities, including classical dance performances and ritualistic ceremonies.

The month-long festival ends with a grand parade of caparisoned elephants in the last two days. Thousands of devotees and tourists come to witness this spectacle from all over Kerala and beyond.

This is typical of many temple-festivals of Kerala and a sight to witness.

15. Visit Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple

I didn’t know about it until I came across this lofty statue of Shiva on my way to the Marari beach. It’s a narrow road to drive to the beach, so finding a parking spot can be difficult. So park your car and walk to the beach after a trip to this temple.

Mararikulam Mahadeva Temple is a hidden gem located in Alappuzha district, Kerala. Built around 700 years ago by Villimangalam Swami, the temple is a sanctuary for two deities of Shiva—Vadakkanappan and Thekkanappan.

The biggest festival in this temple is “ Thiru Utsavam ” held in February every year. Like in Mulakkal, this 10-day festival is also celebrated with traditional music, dance, carnival and elephant parade.

16. Enjoy a coconut at Marari Beach

Marari beach is one of the best beaches in India for families

One of my favorite beaches in India, Marari Beach is named after Mararikulam, a local fishing village, and it retains much of its original character.

This picturesque beach is also a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles ! You could spend hours in this setting, but it’s time for departure, so sip on some coconut water while enjoying soaking some vitamin sea.

17. St. Andrew’s Basilica – A Pit Stop on Your Way to Kochi

If you’re driving back to Kochi , St. Andrew’s Basilica in Arthunkal is one last place to stop by. This basilica is not just a place of worship but a historical marvel.

Raised by the Portuguese missionaries in early16th century, the church was rebuilt in 1584 under the guidance of Jacomo Fenicio, an Italian Jesuit. It is renowned for its grand annual feast of St. Sebastian in January, attracting pilgrims all over the country.

The architecture of the basilica is a blend of Portuguese style and local elements. It was elevated to the status of a basilica on July 9, 2010, making it the first basilica in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alleppey.

The church faces west, offering a serene view of the long white-sand beach on the shores of the Arabian Sea.

Important Details to Note

  • Visiting Time : Open throughout the day, but it’s best to check the official website for any special timings or events.

Other Places to Visit in Alleppey if You Have One More Night

If you have just one more night at Alleppey, there’s so much more to see. For the day of departure, I’ve included a few spots that are conveniently on the same route at a short distance from each other.

18. St Mary’s Forane Church at Valiyapalli

alleppey travel itinerary

Dating back to the 16th century, St Mary’s Forane Church at Valiyapalli is one of the oldest churches in India. A pristine white monument by the lake, this is one of the most beautiful religious sites in Alleppey.

The church is renowned for its beautiful murals and sculptures, as well as its altar made of a single piece of wood. It’s not just a place of worship but also a work of art.

The church is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

19. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Drive to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the second day. Kumarakom is rapidly gaining popularity as an offbeat alternative to Alleppey on the other side of Vembanad Lake.

Developed initially as a rubber plantation by Englishman George Alfred Baker, the sanctuary was formerly known as Baker’s Estate.

Now managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, the sanctuary spans 14 acres on the southern bank of the Meenachil River.

20. Kayaking In Backwaters

alleppey travel itinerary

Kayaking tours can be booked at multiple locations in Alleppey, including popular resorts and specialized tour operators near the backwaters. Some of the well-known spots are near Punnamada Lake and the starting points of houseboat cruises. You can also find options online or through travel agencies.

No prior kayaking experience is required for most tours. Beginners are usually given a brief training session before heading out on the water. However, if you’re looking for something more challenging, there are advanced routes available for experienced kayakers.

Safety is a priority on these tours. All participants are provided with life jackets, and guides often carry first-aid kits. The kayaks used are generally stable and designed for both beginners and experienced paddlers. Some tours even have a support boat that follows the kayakers to ensure safety.

More in the Kerala Backwaters

Alleppey is a place to relax and go back to simpler times. While you can see a lot in one backwater tour in one day, it’s also one of the best places for slow travel.

If you have a longer time in this region, you can save money by adopting the fascinating local lifestyle. Use the public boats, rent a bike to travel around, go for grocery shopping and cook your own meals. Tempting, isn’t it?

Here are my top picks for things to do in Alleppey on a longer trip.

21. Take a Public Ferry to Kollam

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to explore the backwaters, consider taking a public ferry from Alleppey to Kollam.

The journey takes around 8 hours and offers a different perspective of the backwaters. It’s a local experience, complete with stops at small villages along the way.

The ferry usually departs from the Alleppey Boat Jetty and tickets can be purchased on-site.

22. Village Tour of Champakulam

Champakulam is a quaint village situated on the banks of the Pamba River.

It’s famous for its annual snake boat race and the St. Mary’s Forane Church, one of the oldest Christian churches in India.

The village is accessible by boat and road, and a tour here offers a glimpse into the traditional crafts of boat building and idol making.

23. Trek to Pandavan Rock

For those looking to add a bit of adventure to their trip, a trek to Pandavan Rock is a great option.

Located near Urukunnu, this rock is believed to have been a hiding place for the Pandavas during their exile.

The trek is moderate and takes about an hour to reach the top, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Best time to visit Alleppey

alleppey travel itinerary

I recommend visiting Alleppey in the period between November and February. In fact, Alleppey is one of the best places to visit in India in winter .

The temperature of this typically Hot and Humid (with a capital “H”) area is slightly cooler during the time making it ideal for exploring. Also, this is the peak time for bird-watching in the Vembanad Lake. Migratory birds from around the world throng into coastal India for a little warmth. The lake also features seasonal blossoms that add an extra layer of beauty.

However, if you’re keen on experiencing the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, an annual cultural event that turns the peaceful backwaters into a competitive racetrack, you’ll want to plan your visit for August.

Where To Stay in Alleppey?

I have shared with you the tips for the best type of accommodation in Alleppey. Depending on the budget and experience you want to have you can choose between houseboats, luxurious resorts by the backwaters, cozy homestays hosted by locals and even beachside shacks.

Why Not Houseboat

Bed inside a houseboat in Kerala backwaters

☑️Romantic Stay ☑️Houseboat

One of the best options for houseboat stay that includes excellent food onboard and backwater tour.

Lemon Tree Vembanad Resort

☑️Jacuzzi ☑️ Affordable Luxury

alleppey travel itinerary

It isn;t rated well on Booking.com but it is one of my favorite stays. And the rating is high on all other hotel booking sites and rightly so. I don’t think you can find premium rooms right next to the Vembanad lake, with jacuzzi in room at such cheap rates anywhere else. Food here is average.

🌟 Marari Beach Resort, CGH Earth 🌟

☑️Yoga and Wellness ☑️ Fantastic Location

Located near Marari beach, this travel sustainable property offers yoga lessons, luxurious spa and the best facilities among all properties of Alleppey. This is perfect for a family vacation.

How To Reach Alleppey?

alleppey travel itinerary

Getting to Alleppey is relatively straightforward, with multiple options available. I drove from Bangalore, and the journey was a breeze, taking around 9 hours via the NH 44 and NH 66. This is one of the best routes for scenic road trips from Bangalore.

However, if you’re coming from Kochi, be prepared for some traffic delays, especially during peak hours. Kochi is a bustling cosmopolitan city, and the traffic situation can be challenging.

Kochi is the nearest city to Alleppey and serves as a major gateway for travelers. It’s well-connected by air, with the Cochin International Airport offering flights from various domestic and international locations. The city is also accessible by train, with the Ernakulam Junction being the closest major railway station.

If you’re coming from nearby cities like Trivandrum, Madurai, or Coimbatore, there are daily buses that run to Kochi. From Kochi, Alleppey is just a short drive away, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.

If you only have 24 hours in Alappuzha in Kerala, then don’t fret. There are plenty of places to visit in Alleppey in 1 day!

Although the backwaters of Alleppey are humungous, most tourists choose to explore the main canal areas and it’s also here where you should visit to make the most of your time.

The great thing about Alleppey is how diverse the area is. You’ll have historic temples, beautiful beaches, spectacular viewpoints, endless backwaters, delectable dishes, and swaying palm trees (and even palm wine!) to enjoy.

It’s easiest, in my opinion, to take a houseboat, canoe, or a shikara boat around the area so you can explore more. Although having a car is convenient, you’re in water country now.

So, here are all the beautiful places to visit in Alleppey in 1 day!

Heads up: my trip to Alleppey was sponsored by India Someday . Click here to read a review of their India trip planning service or my full itinerary here . As always, although I was a guest all opinions and photo are my own.

Alleppey Kerala

Top tips for visiting Kerala

  • I flew to Cochin Airport from Delhi via a 3-hour domestic Vistara flight for less than $50!  Skyscanner  is my go-to for checking cheap flight prices.
  • In Kerala the locals speak Malayalam, they even have their own songs and films that have been recorded in the language. As one of the most literate states, they speak excellent Hindi and English
  • Kerala is a politically appointed Communist state, so you’ll see lots of communist flags and artwork around the area.

The Communist club in Kochi

  • Getting around Kerala can be quite a minefield with public transport. But, there are buses and trains. I would personally recommend a hire car for your time here.
  • You’ll need travel insurance, I always choose  World Nomads  for their flexible policies.
  • I stayed connected with my Keepgo  WiFi Hotspot , these kept my mobile roaming charges capped! But, getting a SIM card in Delhi is also a great option that provides you with 1GB per day for 30 days.
  • In Kerala they use the rupee, I always found that State Bank of India (SBI) was the best as they take foreign cards as they don’t charge you extra for withdrawals.
  • Kerala is a little more conservative than its neighbour Goa, but not as conservative as Delhi, so make sure that you dress appropriately. But, it’s not uncommon for tourists to wear strappy tops, dresses that show your legs and shorts either.

Fort Kochi

Where is Alleppey / Alappuzha in Kerala?

Alappuzha is the current name for Alleppey in Kerala, just in case you’re confused. But, most people still call it Alleppey.

Alappuzha is around 60 kilometres on NH66 (2 hour drive) from Fort Kochi and 83 kilometres (3 hour drive) from Cochin International airport.

If you’re winding down towards Alleppey from Munnar, then it will take around 5 hours to drive as you’re covering a whopping 170 kilometres on the journey!

How to reach Alleppey in Kerala

There are plenty of ways to get around Kerala. If you plan on relying on public transport then buses and trains will become your best friends.

Personally, if you have the extra budget, I think it’s a lot easier to rent cars while you’re here in Kerala to head around to the different areas.

That way you don’t have the headache of navigating local buses and you can cover a lot more ground!

It’s good to note there are no direct ferries from Cochin to Alleppey

Backwaters of Alleppey

Buses to Alleppey

Buses will be your cheapest way to get from Fort Cochin to Alleppey if you’re heading from there.

You’ll need to get the Ferry to Ernakulam and from there, head to Ernakulam bus station. From here, you can get a bus straight to Alleppey.

The journey will take around 2-3 hours depending on ferry and bus timings and will cost around 150 rupees max!

Bus to Munnar

Trains to Alleppey

There are direct trains from Ernakulam to Alleppey. So, you will need to get on the ferry from Fort Cochin to Ernakulam and take a train from Ernakulam station. It will take around 1 hour to reach there.

You will need to register on the IRCTC website in order to book trains yourself in India. These will need to be at least a few days in advance of travel to guarantee seats and you may be put on a waiting list.

Alternatively, you can visit the train station for Taktal tickets (ones you can book at the counter) a day in advance of travel.

This will be from 10am – 12pm the day BEFORE you leave on the train. For on-the-day tickets I would recommend Cleartrip (but you do still need an IRCTC account to book).

If this is your first time booking trains in India, make sure you read my guide of helpful tips on how to travel in India by train!

Driving to Alleppey

The easiest way would be to have your own transport or hire a car or taxi to Alleppey. This will take around 2 hours to reach Cochin.

If you’re thinking of getting a private taxi from Cochin/Fort Kochi to Alleppey, I would recommend shopping around for a good deal. You’ll usually pay around 1600 – 1800 rupees ($25) for the journey.

You can always get dropped off in Alleppey to a boat cruise and then start your day off exploring from there! More details on how to get around Alleppey are below.

How to get around Alleppey and the backwaters in Kerala?

Most of the time, tourists visit Alleppey to explore the labyrinth of backwaters and see the way of life down here. So, you won’t need a car for this.

The best way to see and experience Alleppey is cruising down the backwaters on a boat, to see the local villages, temples, toddy shops, and more!

Alleppey House Boat

If there is a group of you, or you’re planning to spend a night here. You may want to consider hiring a houseboat.

These can range from budget to super luxury boats and usually have double rooms with comfy beds, bathrooms with a shower, a kitchen on board to prepare meals, and a deck area to lounge on and enjoy the views of Alappuzha.

The houseboats usually come in a package with a room for the night and include hot drinks, snacks, and meals.

Here are some options for your trip;

  • 7-hour cruise on a houseboat in Alleppey
  • Private tour on a houseboat
  • Fort Kochi and Houseboat tour
  • Private backwaters tour with transfers
  • Backwaters private tour on a houseboat from Cochin

Alleppey Shikara Boat

As I was travelling alone, India Someday booked me a night in a hotel in the backwaters themselves on Emerald Isle Heritage Villa! I mean, it doesn’t make much sense for me being on a boat alone haha!

But, I still wanted to have that amazing experience of cruising down the backwaters.

My homestay owner recommended I take a Shikara Boat as the main canals get super overcrowded with houseboats and a smaller boat meant we could cruise down lesser-known areas of the backwaters.

It ended up being an incredible experience that is a lot less money than a houseboat. We got to see some lesser-known areas here and avoid the congestion of the bigger boats in the main canal routes.

Public Ferries

If you’re on a budget, it is possible to travel like the locals do and catch the local ferries that travel around the backwaters.

These will make various stops on the water, but it will stop off at temples, restaurants, and even toddy shops!

Although you won’t be able to stop at your leisure and enjoy the privacy of the boat charter, the prices are next to nothing to travel this way and you’ll get a more local experience.

16 places to visit in Alleppey in 1 day

1. climb up alappuzha lighthouse.

If you want to get some great views of Alleppey, then your first stop should be the Alappuzha Lighthouse.

In the 18/19th century, Alleppey was one of the biggest trading ports in Kerala. The lighthouse then was built in 1862 as a navigational aid for those sailors bringing their boats into harbour.

Today, the Alappuzha Lighthouse is a major tourist attraction where you can climb up the spiral staircase and get fantastic 360-degree views of the whole area.

But, you have to work for those views by climbing up a lot of steps and then finishing off the journey with a climb up a dodgy step ladder.

Click here to read my complete guide on what to expect visiting the Alappuzha lighthouse!

Alappuzha Lighthouse Museum | Places to visit in Alleppey

I was able to climb up to the top at a quiet time of the day, but getting back down was a real challenge. The heat in October was stifling and people were queueing the whole way down the lighthouse. It was a sweatbox inside.

The ladder had little control over who was going up or down and so it caused a build-up. People were going a bit crazy in the heat and pushing etc.

I soon figured out that there is a discount on the entry price from 3-5 pm! So, if you don’t want to be part of the rush, I would go earlier or later than those times.

The Alappuzha ticket prices are 25 rupees for foreign tourists and 10 rupees for Indians. There is a fee of 25 rupees for a  camera. This includes a small museum about the lighthouse history.

The views from Alappuzha lighthouse

2. Watch the sunset from the shores of Alappuzha Beach

Alappuzha beach is pretty clean by Indian standards, so I would highly recommend visiting while you’re in the area.

Although note that there will still be rubbish on the beach. Plus, cows which is also a cool sight.

Although, usually in the West we bring out towels and suncream to relax around 10 feet apart from another party for a sunbathe. Indian beaches are not like that at all.

Most of the time, you’ll see everyone crowded together standing on the shoreline, taking in the sunset or paddling in the waves that come crashing in.

There are also lifeguards who will constantly blow whistles at people taking any risks!

Alleppey Beach Kerala | Places to visit in Alleppey

So, if you want any chance of seeing the ocean, you’ll have to join the crowd.

Here, you can also see the remains on an old pier that used to be in Alleppey. But, by the looks it was destroyed decades ago.

There are some coconut stalls and drink stands in the area if you’re feeling thirsty.

Alappuzha Beach

3. Sip a coconut and scrape out the jelly!

One of my favourite things to do in South India is drink the fresh coconuts that grow in the area.

These are quite literally hacked from the palm trees and sold that day, so you’ll be getting it completely fresh with all the flavour intact. Such a blessing compared to the UK where we have to import them.

What I love doing after you’ve sucked all the coconut water out is passing the nut back to the seller so they can cut it in half. They also cut a little makeshift spoon out of the nutshell!

Then, you can use the spoon to scrape out all the fresh coconut jelly that’s inside it. It’s honestly the best and if you haven’t tried fresh coconut before, now is your chance.

Look out for coconut sellers in Alleppey on the roadside, in the backwaters, and on the beaches too! It’s the perfect refreshment on a hot day.

Things to do in Fort Kochi

4. Take a day ride on an Alleppey House Boat

Just because you’re travelling to Alleppey in one day, doesn’t mean you can’t hire a houseboat!

Many people decide to rent a private charter for the day so that they can cruise along the backwaters, have lunch on board and have a nap if they want to as well.

It’s really popular and some say a better option than staying overnight in a houseboat too (it’s crowded with geckos and other bugs).

You can spend a whole day cruising and stop off where you like if you want to stop at all. Make sure you let the tour company know where you would like to stop off before you go.

Just note that as the houseboats are big, you’re restricted to the main waterways which can get busy. If you want to go on a more off-the-beaten-track adventure, rent a Shikara boat like me (see below)!

5.  Explore the Kuttanad Backwaters

Did you know that the Alleppey backwaters spread over 300 sq km!! It’s a phenomenon and a way of life for most people.

You’ll see many houses on little islands around here where people need to ride a boat just to enter their house.

If you’re only here for one day, I would recommend concentrating on the Kuttanad Backwaters. This has lots of pretty palm trees either side, churches, temples, Toddy shops, and villages to look at while you explore.

If you’re not getting a private charter, this is also the perfect place to catch the local ferries too as there are more infrastructure and ferry stops.

6. Go temple hopping!

The South of India has a colourful history of colonisation and the legacy is a plethora of cultures and religions. Kerala is no exception to that.

If you’ve already been to Fort Kochi, you may have been temple-hopping already to places like the Santa Cruz Basilica.

Well, Alappuzha doesn’t have churches as grand as all that, but it does have quaint temples of worship tucked away in the backwaters.

You can visit synagogues, mosques, churches, and Hindu temples that go back centuries. On my stay at Emerald Isle Village, we made some stops at St Joseph’s Church near the Sunset Point at Vattakkayal.

We also made a stop at the ancient Hindu Madathil Bhagavathi temple, although I was not allowed to enter being a foreign tourist.

7. Ride in a traditional canoe

Before houseboats, engines, or even cars, the locals used to travel by traditional country canoe boats.

These country roads were used to transport people, rice, coconuts amongst other things and it takes you back to a different age. They are still used by many farmers today!

If you’re up for a wild ride and a bit more of a local adventure, you can row down the backwaters yourself in one of these canoes.

Some of them do have a motorised engine too if you weren’t up for a workout of your arms!

But, as this boat ride is a bit closer to the water it requires a bit of a balancing act. So, no sudden movements lol. I took one of these to be transported to my homestay and it was awesome but not entirely waterproof on the floor.

8. Stay on the backwaters at Emerald Isle Heritage villa

As I was alone, India Someday booked me into a heritage homestay on the backwaters!

At first, I was a little confused as I thought that everyone booked onto houseboats but I found that this particular homestay was indeed very special.

Plus, it didn’t make much sense for me to be alone on a boat in the middle of Alleppey haha.

If you are interested in staying the night, Emerald Isle Heritage Villa is a farmstay that is over 150 years old! I know as I saw the original deed carved into a banana leaf.

Click here to read my full review of Emerald Isle Villas

Emerald Isle Homestay | Where to stay in Alleppey

It’s located over the backwaters and has a few boutique rooms, a spice farm with hammocks, Ayurvedic spa, and a restaurant too.

As part of my stay, we organised some resort activities like taking a tour of the island by rickshaw where we explored the beautiful area, meeting locals in villages, and watching the days fishing catch!

They are also able to book a boat ride for you to explore the backwaters and I took a Shikara boat. This way, we were able to go inside the smaller canals and go a little off the beaten path.

As you’re tucked away, Emerald Isle will prepare meals for you throughout your stay.

The breakfast, lunch, and dinner had a great mix of Western and local options. I always go for local food when I can and the fish curries were out of this world.

I would highly recommend staying here to escape for awhile. Click here for Emerald Isle dates and rates!

9. Take a Shikara boat ride on the backwaters

If you wanted to go deep into the backwaters, I would opt for a smaller Shikara boat to take you around. The bigger houseboats are restricted to the main riverways.

It’s kind of like the canoe boats, but they are much bigger with a rooftop to keep you dry and a motor engine. It even had a sunbed so you could relax onboard too!

Alleppey Backwaters

The reason why I loved it so much is that we could veer off into the little canal routes.

We sailed under photogenic bridges, met the locals fishing, saw women washing their clothes, and actually got to see some of the real-life that goes on in Kerala.

We stopped off in Toddy shops and learned how Palm Wine was made and we could explore so much more this way.

I would highly recommend finding a Shikara boat tour if you want to really explore Alleppey and escape the masses of houseboats and tourists!

10. Enjoy some Ayurveda!

Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, discovered 3000 years ago and it would be crazy not to try out some of the local treatments while you’re here.

They are also a fraction of the price of Western spas and the West learned all they knew from India! So, go get ‘em.

My homestay at Emerald Isle provided some Ayurvedic massages and treatments in their spa and I enjoyed a full hour-long body massage.

My masseuse, as well as providing spa treatments, was a local chiropractor at a clinic in the area!

So, she asked me about any tension I was feeling. As a blogger, I do get pains in my shoulder and so she worked on that for me, easing out the knots! It was incredible and it did feel so much looser after.

As well as treatments in resorts, there are plenty of Ayruvedic centres where people check-in for a while for natural healing.

11. Tuck into a delectable Malayali lunch

The food in South India is some of the tastiest you’ll get in the whole country. That’s why they serve classics like Dosa, Idli, and Vada on the menus all over.

The fish here is the local specialty and you know you’re getting it fresh as it’s caught in the rivers and in the sea! So, unless you’re strictly vegetarian, a fish curry has to be on your list of foods to try!

A lot of the food that was cooked for me in my homestay was fish-based. Fried, grilled, or curried, it was absolutely delicious and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Emerald Isle Homestay Restaurant

But, if you are more inclined to eat vegetarian foods, India is perfect for that. As many Hindus refrain from eating meat, you’ll find that most curries and chutneys are veg and packed with flavour!

Although super touristy, a bucket list thing to do here is to eat curry on a banana leaf! It’s like a Thali and you can try a range of local dishes.

You usually buy the basic Thali which is veg and buy extra meat dishes if you fancy!

Kerala thali

12. Watch the locals toddy tapping

One of the things you have to try here in Alleppey is Toddy. It’s a type of wine that is sourced from Palm trees.

But before you do, you should definitely learn where it comes from and how the locals source it!

Toddy tapping has been a profession here for centuries and now boasts around 50,000 labourers in the trade. It’s also licensed by the government and so it’s completely above board, not like Moonshine.

Toddy tapping in Kerala

A toddy drawer will climb a palm tree and make a whole in the palm flower at the top of the tree. They will then attach a pot, to collect the sap from the palm tree.

The sap will naturally ferment with the yeast in the air and within a few hours, you’ll have sweet alcohol that is around 4-6%. It’s then ready to be sold off to Toddy shops, or used in the home to make bread!

There are many opportunities to see toddy tapping and even have a go yourself! Enquire about your houseboat or hotel for more information.

Toddy tapping Kerala

13. Or, try some palm wine for yourself in a Toddy Shop!

If you’re looking for where to sample some Toddy, then you only need to look on the backwaters. While on your tour, make sure you ask your guide to stop off at a Toddy shop.

You’ll often be floating down the river and see a shack with a sign saying ‘Toddy’ or a photo of a terracotta pot spilling out palm wine. That’s your cue.

Toddy in Kerala | Toddy Shop in Kerala

These aren’t the cleanest places or the fanciest, but they will be packed with local men who are playing cards, watching TV, or chatting after a hard day’s work.

On my visit, it was festival time, so there weren’t many open for business. But, luckily we found one that was open to trying some Toddy!

You must be careful with how much you consume as they often mix with local water. Plus, if you’re not used to drinking it, it can irritate your stomach.

However, it’s a must-try and was one of the highlights of my trip to Alleppey!

14. Go fishing with the locals

Fishing is a big part of the trade-in the area and you will see it everywhere you go. Boats out on the sea, men with their nets or fishing rods, or on a canoe boat. Everyone is trying to catch fish for their dinner!

As part of your tour, you can stop on your boat to see the fishermen reeling in their catch during the day, or the best time is at sunset once they’re on their way home.

On my rickshaw tour, we saw men laying a net in the backwaters in the Lilypads. Although it was mucky work, it paid off as they were able to catch quite a few big fish there.

15. Visit a spice farm

The whole reason why settlers came to Kerala from foreign lands, to begin with was for the wealth of spices that were here to trade.

The Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British, all traded spices back home and with the world. Kerala is famous for it.

Today, a popular thing to do in Kerala is to visit one of the spice farms, gardens, or plantations in the area.

My homestay had its own farm which the owner’s family had owned for more than 150 years! They stored grain, coconuts, rice and also grew their own spices for dishes.

16. Watch the world go by in your hammock!

I really feel that Fort Kochi is for hopping around historical buildings, Munnar is for exploring the hilltops and Alleppey is the spot where you can chill out for a while.

Alappuzha has a completely different mood to the rest of Kerala. One where you escape the stresses of the modern world.

So, as well as all the places you can visit in Alleppey in 1 day, you can also use that 24 hours to chill out and relax.

Many houseboats give you the option to lie down and just sail, watching the world go by. Or, you can find a homestay that provides a place to completely relax and read a book.

Emerald Isle had a whole farm area where you could walk around a lake, see the spices and also relax in a hammock by the backwaters.

It was almost opposite Sunset Point, so you had a spectacular view from there. All I will say though is bring some bug spray, as lying still can make you a good target for mosquitos and other insects too!

Where are you headed next in Kerala?

So, that’s all the places you can visit in Alleppey in 1 day. But, there is so much more to Kerala than the backwaters.

I explored Kerala for a week and loved every minute of it! We explored Fort Kochi, Munnar, and Alleppey on my tour which gave a great mix of history, culture, viewpoints, and relaxation.

Or, you can see some of the ‘real’ Kerala by visiting the locals at Dhobi Khana laundry house or climb aboard the Chinese Fishing nets to help the fishermen to reel in the catch of the day.

It’s also a great place to watch a traditional Kathakali performance too.

Alappuzha (Alleppey)

Alappuzha – most still call it Alleppey – is the hub of Kerala's backwaters, home to a vast network of waterways, over a thousand houseboats and an important coir industry. Wandering around the small but chaotic city centre, with its modest grid of canals, you'd be hard-pressed to agree with the 'Venice of the East' tag, and, sadly, at research time a hulking new highway flyover was marring the beauty of Alleppey's popular beach. But head out towards the backwaters and Alleppey becomes graceful and greenery-fringed, disappearing into a watery world of villages, punted canoes, toddy shops and, of course, houseboats. Floating along and gazing over paddy fields of succulent green, curvaceous rice barges and village life along the banks is one of Kerala’s most mesmerisingly beautiful and relaxing experiences.

That being said, here’s a disclaimer. This is going to be an article that will help you set up an Alleppey travel itinerary without houseboat cruise. From the mid-nineteenth century, Alleppey (“Alappuzha”) was the main port for the backwater region. Spices, coffee, tea, cashews and other produce were shipped out from the inland waterways to the sea via a grid of canals and railway lines. Tourist literature loves to dub the town “the Venice of the East”, but in truth the comparison does few favours to Venice . Apart from a handful of colonial-era warehouses and mansions, and a derelict pier jutting into the sea from a dirty, sun-blasted beach, few monuments survive, while the old canals enclose a ramshackle Keralan market of bazaars and noisy traffic.

Tailor-made trips for   India

That said, Alappuzha makes a congenial place to while away an evening en route to or from the backwaters of Kerala .

Streams of visitors do just that during the winter season, for the town has become Kerala’s pre-eminent rice boat cruising hub, with an estimated four hundred kettu vallam moored on the fringes of nearby Vembanad and Punnamada lakes.

To cash in on the seasonal influx, the local tourist offices lay on excursion boats for day-trips, while in mid-December the sands lining the west end of town host a popular beach festival, during which cultural events and a procession of fifty caparisoned elephants are staged with the dilapidated British-built pier as a backdrop.

Alappuzha’s really big day, however, is the second Saturday of August, in the middle of the monsoon, when it serves as the venue for one of Kerala’s major spectacles – the Nehru Trophy snake boat race.

From day cruises on the famous backwaters to relaxing on the beach here are the best things to do in Alappuzha.

#1 Take a day cruise around Alleppey

The obvious destination for a day-trip from Alappuzha is Vembanad Lake on the town’s north and eastern fringes: Punnamada Lake (also called Punnamada Kayal) is the local section of this vast waterway.

Reaching either from town is most straightforward by water. For short cruises, it’s possible to charter diesel-powered motorboats, but a better option would be to dispense with engines altogether and opt for a guided village tour in a hand-paddled canoe.

Aside from being more “green”, these allow you to penetrate narrow waterways beyond the range of the other tourist boats

#2 Slither into town for the Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race

On the second Satuarday in August, the most spectacular of the town’s boat races attracts huge crowds to Punnamda Lake near Alappuzha.

Following a grand procession, the magnificently decorated longboats – each carrying more than one hundred oarsmen rowing to the rhythmic vanchipattu (“song of the boatman”) – compete in knockout rounds.

#3 Ride an old rice barge through the backwaters

Whoever dreamed up the idea of showing tourists around the backwaters in old kettu vallam (rice barges), could never have imagined that, more than three decades on, nine hundred or more of them would be chugging around Kuttanad waterways.

These houseboats, made of dark, oiled jackwood with canopies of plaited palm thatch and coir, are big business, and almost every accommodation seems to have one. The flashiest are fitted with a/c rooms, Jacuzzis and widescreen plasma TVs on their teak sun decks and have bottles of imported wine in their fridges.

Cruises last a minimum of 22 hours, though don’t expect to spend all of that on the move: running times are carefully calculated to spare gas. From sunset onwards you’ll be moored at a riverbank.

#4 Relax on Alappuzha Beach

Relax on this lick of sandy shoreline while enjoying breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach, witness the mesmerising sunset, and don't forget to try some delicious local snacks from the beachside stalls.

The beach also hosts various cultural events and festivals, adding to its vibrant ambiance.

As well as the houseboats, Alappuzha has a decent amount of value accomodation and homestays too. Here’s where to stay.

Even if you aren't planning on boarding a houseboat, Alleppey has some of Kerala's most charming and best-value accommodation, particularly when it comes to homestays and backpacker hostels. Homestays are also mushrooming along the coast north of Alleppey and around the remote backwaters.

To fully immerse yourself in the backwater experience, consider staying in one of the houseboats or resorts located in the backwater areas of Alappuzha.

Alappuzha Beach

Numerous hotels and resorts line the beachfront at Alappuzha Beach, offering a range of amenities and breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea.

Punnamada Lake

For a tranquil and picturesque setting, Punnamada Lake is an ideal option. You can choose from luxury resorts or homestays that offer stunning views of the lake. The latter are growing exponential along the coast north of Alleppey as well.

Browse the best hotels in Alleppey.

With a handful of good restaurants, Alleppey isn’t exactly a culinary superstar. That said, you can expect lots of great homecooking on the barges and at guesthouses. Here’s where to go.

Alleppey Beach Road is a bustling area near Alleppey Beach with numerous restaurants serving traditional Kerala cuisine and plenty of fresh seafood. Located in the city centre, Mullakkal Street is a treasure trove of local eateries and small cafes.

The shoreline is dotted with some great restaurants where the Indian food is as good as the views from your table.

Tuk-tuks are a popular mode of transport in Alappuzha. They are convenient for short distances and offer a relatively affordable way to get around the city. Taxis are readily available in Alappuzha. Either hail on the street or book one through a taxi service.

The city has a well-connected network of local buses that operate within the city and to nearby towns. Alappuzha is famous for its backwaters, and exploring them by houseboat is a must-do here.

This is a relatively small city, and hiring a scooter is a popular way to get around. Ask at your hotel.

The best time to visit Alleppey is during the winter months of October to February. This period offers the most pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 32°C (68°F to 90°F). The winter season in Alleppey is characterized by mild temperatures, low humidity, and gentle breezes, making it an ideal time to explore the backwaters and engage in outdoor activities.

Another popular time to visit Alappuzha is during the monsoon season, which typically occurs from June to September. The heavy rains during this period transform the backwaters into a picturesque landscape, and the lush greenery adds to the charm of the region. However, it's important to note that boat services and outdoor activities may be limited during the monsoon due to rough weather conditions.

Visiting in December? Make sure to read our article about visiting Kerala in December

It's worth considering that Alappuzha can be crowded with tourists during peak travel seasons. If you prefer a quieter experience with fewer crowds, you may consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of October-November or February-March. These months offer favorable weather conditions while avoiding the peak tourist rush.

Most visitors will spend at least one or two nights in Alleppey, though we recommend at least four days here. During a two-day visit, you can embark on a memorable houseboat cruise through the backwaters -- the reason most travellers come here -- and then leave again.

It's worth staying a little longer to climb to the top of Alleppey Lighthouse for panoramic views and spend a day at the beach, too. If you're in town for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, book as far in advance as you can and spend several days here to take in the atmosphere as well.

The KSRTC bus stand is at the northeast edge of town, 1min from the boat jetty.

The main boat jetty is on Vadai Canal, close to the KSRTC bus stand, from where the daily tourist ferries to and from Kollam run, as well as cheaper local (and less direct) ferries to and from Kottayam.

Regular services also connect Alappuzha with Champakulam, where you pick up less frequent boats to Neerettupuram and Kidangara, and back to Alappuzha. This round route ranks among Kuttanad’s classic trips.

The station, on the main Thiruvananthapuram–Ernakulam line, lies 3km southwest across town, on the far side of Alappuzha’s main waterway, Commercial Canal.

As the backwaters prevent trains from continuing directly south beyond Alappuzha, only a few major daily services and a handful of passenger trains depart from here.

Best things to do in Alleppey backwaters

Alleppey Travel: What are the best Alleppey backwaters activities? Kerala, India

So, how to experience the famous Kerala backwaters in Alleppey?

You have options!

Here are some of the best activities on the Alleppey backwaters :

1. Backwaters canoe village tour

Alleppey Travel: Best Alleppey backwaters activities - Canoe village tour. Kerala, India

Touring the backwaters by canoe can be the perfect way to experience the Kerala backwaters!

A backwaters village canoe tour can actually be more than just a canoe ride. It can encompass a few different aspects that will make you feel like it is totally worth it.

My Alleppey canoe tour came with:

  • Ride to and from the ferry station by scooter (on the way there) and rickshaw (on the way back)
  • Public ferry rides to and from Alleppey town to a village in the backwaters
  • Visit to a village home
  • Canoe ride through the canals
  • Stop for a coconut
  • Stop for Kerala palm wine (aka toddy at a toddy shop)

And perhaps most importantly… 😉

It came with food too. Two meals: breakfast and lunch.

Cost of this backwaters canoe village tour: 1,000 rupees (US$15) – I arranged it through this guesthouse .

2. Backwaters kayaking tour

Alleppey Travel: Best Alleppey backwaters activities - Sunset kayaking tour. Kerala, India

If you’re looking to do more than sit and have someone else do the rowing through the backwaters for you, kayaking the backwaters just might be the perfect activity for you!

A backwaters kayaking tour is typically a half-day activity. You can usually choose the early morning tour or sunset kayak tour.

My Alleppey kayaking tour came with:

  • Ride to and from the starting point of my kayak by scooter (on the way there) and rickshaw (on the way back)
  • Kayak guide to lead the route through the wide open lake and smaller canals
  • Life jacket!
  • Stop for chai twice
  • Stop for coconut

Cost of this backwaters kayaking tour: 1,500 rupees (US$23)

3. Backwaters cycling tour

Alleppey Travel: Best Alleppey backwaters activities - Cycling tour. Kerala, India

If you want to see some of the Kerala backwaters in a way that not many tourists do, then consider a cycling tour along the backwaters!

My cycling tour came with:

  • Ride from bus stop outside of main Alleppey bus station
  • Helmet (although I had my own)
  • Guide to lead the cycling route crossing across some main roads of Alleppey district, rural Alleppey alongside paddy fields, and then of course, the backwaters!
  • Ride to a ferry stop to catch the public ferry back to Alleppey town

I had to catch a bus from the Alleppey bus station to the designated meeting point but this was pretty hassle-free.

Alleppey Travel: Best Alleppey backwaters activities - Cycling tour through rural villages. Kerala, India

Cost of this backwaters cycling tour: 500 rupees (US$8)

Or, if you stay at a guesthouse that provides bicycles for free  – I found bicycle rentals in Alleppey to be hard to come by otherwise – then there are a few places that can be worth cycling around Alleppey on your own that make the perfect one day trips from Alleppey !

4. Backwaters public ferry

Alleppey Travel: Best Alleppey backwaters activities - Public ferry government transportation boat ride. Kerala, India

Taking one of the best public ferry routes around Alleppey is by far the cheapest way to experience the Kerala backwaters.

If you are on a serious budget when traveling in India, then this would be the way to go. It’s a public boat ride cruising the backwaters.

With people living right along the backwaters, locals take the public ferry to get around the waters. And you can hop on a ferry right along with them!

Since ferries stick to the main waterways, you wouldn’t get to experience the smaller canals with a ferry ride, but you can get an introduction to the Kerala backwaters.

Alleppey Travel: Best Alleppey backwaters activities - Tourist ferry government public transportation boat ride. Kerala, India

Cost of these backwaters ferries: Starting at around 10 rupees! (15 cents)

5. Backwaters houseboat

Alleppey Travel: What are the best Alleppey backwaters activities? Is a houseboat worth it? Overnight, 2 day. Kerala, India

Houseboats are basically the quintessential Kerala backwaters thing.

For tourists familiar with Kerala, what often comes to mind when the Kerala backwaters are mentioned is a houseboat cruise on the backwaters.

It can be a perfect way to experience the backwaters for couples and groups. (Not so much for solo travelers.)

You can think of this like an all-inclusive hotel on water. You have your room (several if you want a houseboat with more than one room) and you get authentic Kerala meals too.

Similar to the ferry, since houseboats are larger, they won’t be going down any of the smaller canals. But the longer the duration of your houseboat, the further out you can go. (You can opt for just a day on the backwaters, an overnight houseboat, or several days.)

This means that the more time you have, the more chance you have of going to a quieter part of the backwaters.

Alleppey Travel: What are the best Alleppey backwaters activities? Is a houseboat worth it? Overnight, 2 day. Kerala, India

Cost of houseboat: Lots of different factors contribute to pricing. An overnight houseboat may start at 7,000 rupees. The more people you have, the cheaper it can end up being per person.

Which is the BEST Alleppey backwaters tour?!

Alleppey Travel: What are the best Alleppey backwaters activities? Is the canoe village tour worth it? Kerala, India

Out of the main backwaters activities I did in Kerala (canoe, kayaking, cycling, public ferry, scooter… and walking), if you had to choose just ONE backwaters activity, I would go with the canoe tour.

With the village tour, I think it’s a good way to have the chance to experience a variety of different aspects of the Kerala backwaters!

Best public ferry routes around Alleppey backwaters

Alleppey Travel: Which of the best public ferries in Alleppey are worth it? Kerala, India

Public ferries around Alleppey are a cheap way to get on the Kerala backwaters.

There are a few different ferry routes that make it easy for tourists to choose this option:

  • “See Kuttanad ferry” – Alleppey to Kuttanad

Alleppey to Kottayam ferry

Alleppey Travel: Best public ferries. Alleppey to Kottayam ferry. Kerala, India

To go from Alleppey to Kottayam by ferry , it takes 2.5 to 3 hours.

Parts of the route will feel like you’re taking a boat ride through the more rural parts of the backwaters.

While you won’t be going down any smaller canals, you’re getting a little further out so you’ll be going through parts that have less boats on the water.

Once you reach Kottayam, you can choose to take the ferry back, or you can also get back to Alleppey by bus .

Kottayam is around 50 km by road from Alleppey, and by bus it can take around 1.5 hours to get back to Alleppey.

The Kottayam bus station is located around a 15 minute walk from the ferry station. You’ll likely easily be able to find a rickshaw to take you there too.

It’ll take longer, but instead of taking the bus to Munnar or bus to Thekkady , you can go in part by ferry from the Kerala backwaters to the Kerala hills – to Munnar by ferry and to Thekkady by ferry .

Then, once you reach Kottayam, you can take a bus to Munnar or bus to Thekkady/Kumily the rest of the way.

Cost of this Alleppey to Kottayam ferry: 18 rupees (25 cents)

See Kuttanad ferry: Alleppey to Kuttanad

Alleppey Travel: Best public ferries. Alleppey to Kuttanad ferry, See Kuttanad ferry. Kerala, India

This is also known as the “See Kuttanad” ferry .

This is another good introduction to the Kerala backwaters, and this ferry stays closer to the main part of Alleppey.

Once at the final ferry stop, there was then a 30 minute break at Kuttanad before the same ferry heads back to Alleppey where you came from. There really isn’t anything noteworthy at this ferry stop.

If you decide that you’d rather head straight back to Alleppey the quick way instead of taking the ferry, there are rickshaws nearby that you can take.

The end point of this ferry is no more than 15 km by road from Alleppey, so you stay relatively close which means the ride back is no more than 30 minutes.

The cost of the rickshaw from this Kuttanad ferry stop to Alleppey was 250 rupees (US$4).

Alleppey to Kollam ferry

Alleppey Travel: Best public ferries. Alleppey to Kollam ferry. Kerala, India

The Alleppey to Kollam tourist ferry is a public ferry that’s operated by the Kerala state government, but the price tag is not as cheap compared to a regular public ferry.

This boat ride is catered towards tourists. It’s an alternative to taking the bus or train when traveling south from Alleppey. It’s faster to take a train or bus, but this ferry about the experience!

This ferry doesn’t really make stops for locals, but it does make a couple of stops for food. There’s a lunch break and there’s also a snack break.

The food does cost extra. It’s around 100 – 150 rupees (US$2-3) depending on whether or not you get fish.

This is a traditional Kerala meal, and unless you bring along your own food, it’s really your only chance to eat real food during the 8 hour journey. You can keep requesting more food at no extra cost as long as they haven’t run out.

Alleppey Travel: Best public ferries. Alleppey to Kollam ferry with food. Kerala, India

You take this ferry when you want to leave Alleppey for good. Taking this ferry will take you south towards Munroe Island, Varkala, Kovalam, and the Trivandrum airport.

There is NO Alleppey to Kollam ferry during parts of the off-season. I believe it doesn’t run in May, June, and July. But confirm this with the guesthouse you are staying at in Alleppey. They should be able to tell you for sure!

See the worst things about this ferry to Kollam to decide if it’s worth it for you to take this ferry.

Alleppey to Amma’s Ashram ferry

Alleppey Travel: Best public ferries. Alleppey to Amma's Ashram ferry. Amritapuri, Kerala, India

The other stop that the Alleppey to Kollam ferry can make is at Amma’s ashram in Amritapuri.

This is an internationally known ashram with a sprawling complex. Amma is the spiritual leader of this ashram, and she is known as the “hugging mother.”

She has followers all around the world who come and visit this ashram. There are also many people who live here long term.

The cost of Amma’s ashram was 250 rupees (US$4) a night, with 3 meals included.

Alleppey to Varkala ferry

Varkala is a beach town in Kerala that’s famous for cliff-side restaurants and guesthouses.

It’s also a tourist hotspot for ayurveda, and you can find several ayurveda yoga retreats in Varkala.

If you’re looking to get to Varkala from Alleppey, you can go by bus or train… or in part by ferry!

The ferry is the longer way to get to Varkala, but you can leave Alleppey in true Alleppey style. 😉

You’ll take the ferry to Kollam. Then once you get to the Kollam ferry station, you can choose to go to Varkala by bus or train from Kollam to Varkala.

The Kollam bus station is right across the street from the ferry station, so on the surface, the bus seems to be the most convenient, but it may take an extra bus transfer to get to Varkala.

The most convenient way to take the bus to get from Kollam to Varkala without much planning ahead is to show up at the bus station in Kollam across from the ferry station and head to the “station master” office. Then you can ask the best way to get to Varkala. You may have to take 2 buses to get there.

Use this guide to decide if it’s worth it to go to Varkala by ferry.

Ferry to anywhere!

Alleppey Travel: Which of the best public ferries in Alleppey are worth it? Kerala, India

If you’re feeling up for an adventure, you can head to the Alleppey ferry station in town, and get on the first ferry that comes your way.

Then, as you’re on the ferry, you can have a look around to see what ferry stop looks promising to explore by walking! And get off the ferry at a random stop!

Alleppey Travel: Best public ferries. Alleppey to Kuttanad ferry, See Kuttanad backwaters ferry. Kerala, India

If you decide to explore the Alleppey backwaters this way, there are 2 main ways you can get back:

1. Take the ferry back to Alleppey

Once you get off at the ferry station, ask around to find out the timings of the ferry back to Alleppey. Then go off and explore the backwaters by walking around by foot, and be back in time for the ferry!

2. Catch a bus back to Alleppey

Look at Google maps or ask around about where a main road is located. You may choose to explore the backwaters by foot based on the direction of the main road.

Getting to a main road means that you will almost certainly be able to catch a bus back to Alleppey! Or you may possibly find a rickshaw to take you back too.

Is there a ferry from Cochin to Alleppey?!

There is currently NO public ferry to get from Cochin to Alleppey. Your main options are bus and train. The bus timings from Cochin to Alleppey are very frequent, so the bus may be the more convenient option compared to the train.

Alleppey Beach

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach guide. Kerala, India

The beach in Alleppey isn’t generally known as being among the best beach towns in Kerala. (Those honors go to Varkala and Kovalam.)

But the beach in Alleppey can still be a positive part of your overall stay in Alleppey.

There are plenty of things to do along Alleppey Beach that can leave you with good memories!

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Sunset walk. Kerala, India

In general, I consider there to be 3 main parts of the beach that can collectively be called Alleppey Beach:

  • Main part of Alleppey Beach
  • Beach in front of Cafe Catamaran
  • Beach near Muthala Pozhi (where the river meets the sea)

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Sunset walk with crab. Kerala, India

Main Alleppey Beach

A landmark that can be considered the center of the main part of Alleppey Beach is the sea bridge, which is basically a non-functional pier.

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Popular crowded Alleppey Beach near sea bridge pier. Kerala, India

This is the section of beach in Alleppey that can become the most crowded.

Visit this strip at sunset, and you’ll find that it comes comes alive.

There are street vendors around here. There are also a number of restaurants that you can choose from that are located on the road that runs along the beach.

The further you move away from this stretch of beach, the less crowded it gets.

And to the north is where you’ll find the other 2 main sections of the beach.

Catamaran Beach

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Near beachfront guesthouse. Kerala, India

This is NOT the official name of this section of the beach. (I’ve never heard it called a specific name.) But for ease in locating this area, I’m calling it the Catamaran Beach. 😉

If you look at Google maps, there’s a street called Catamaran Road. But even more helpful, there’s a restaurant called Cafe Catamaran. Around here the sand reaches from water to road which makes this area a good beach access point.

It’s common for foreigners to go for a sunrise swim or sunset swim at this beach. If you choose to go swimming as well, do so at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards here.

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Sunset yoga, walk, swimming. Kerala, India

Once you start walking north along the beach from the main part of Alleppey Beach, you’ll start to see clusters of local fishermen who hang out on the beach.

This area of beach is one such area that you can sometimes find them hanging out. An early morning walk along the beach might have you seeing the fishermen at work!

There are a couple of places to stay located nearby this Catamaran Beach. If you’re looking to stay near the beach, I think this area is a good choice.

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Beachfront hostel Zostel. Kerala, India

This is one of the areas I stayed for accommodation when I was in Alleppey.

Staying at a guesthouse along the beach might mean that you can wake up to amazing ocean views!

Muthala Pozhi Beach

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Near beachfront guesthouse. Kerala, India

Again, this is NOT the name of this section of the beach, but I think it’s an easy way to describe it when you’re looking at a map.

Looking at a map, “muthala pozhi” refers to the place where the river meets the sea in the local Kerala language of Malayalam.

RIVER…

You’ll see locals fishing in this area too.

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Where to stay, guesthouse near local fishing for seafood. Kerala, India

Nearby to the south is a main area of beach that’s used among fishermen.

A morning walk along the beach may mean you get to see them at work too!

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Morning walk local fishermen fishing seafood. Kerala, India

Being further away from the main part of Alleppey Beach, and Alleppey town for that matter, you’ll find less people on the beach.

Alleppey Travel: Best of Alleppey Beach - Where to stay near Alleppey Beach towards Marari Beach. Kerala, India

If you’re looking for a place to stay near the beach in Alleppey, once again, I think this is a good area to stay.

This guesthouse is where I stayed.

Which part of Alleppey Beach is best?!

Of course, it depends on what you’re looking for.

For convenience in finding restaurants and places to eat, the main Alleppey Beach has the most options.

The further away you go, the less options you’ll find. This just means you’ll have to go further to get food. That said, Alleppey Beach isn’t that long!

I like the areas of both Catamaran and Muthala Pozhi.

The further north you go from the main Alleppey Beach, towards Muthala Pozhi, the further away you get from the main tourist areas of Alleppey.

You may like this because you can get the feeling that you’re in more of a residential area and you’ll see kids playing on the street too… like playing cricket!

For easy reference, have a look at the  map of Alleppey Beach below.

These are the basic sections of beach that I referenced to above.

The furthest south is the main part of the beach. And the further north you go, generally there will be less tourists on the beach.

Alleppey Travel: Day trips from Alleppey - to Kumarakom. Kerala, India

Kumarakom is another place in Kerala that’s known for the backwaters, but it’s also known to be more expensive than Alleppey.

Aside from the backwaters, Kumarakom is also home to a bird sanctuary. This can make for a nice day trip from Alleppey.

You can get to the Kumarakom bird sanctuary by taking a bus and ferry.

First you’ll take a bus from Alleppey to Muhamma.

Once you reach the Muhamma bus station, it’s a 5-10 minute walk to reach the Muhamma ferry station. From there, you’ll catch a ferry from Muhamma to Kumarakom. You’ll cross the big Vembanad Lake to reach Kumarakom.

Once you get to the Kumarakom ferry station, you can take a rickshaw to reach the bird sanctuary.

Here’s more about taking a ferry to get to Kumarakom.

Alleppey Travel: Day trips from Alleppey - to Marari Beach. Kerala, India

Around 10-15 km north of Alleppey is Marari Beach. This has become known as one of the best beaches around Alleppey.

To reach Marari Beach from Alleppey, you can go by bus, rent a scooter, take a rickshaw, or by cycling from Alleppey !

Or, if you’re feeling like you want to get a bit of physical activity in, you can also walk right along the beach to get from Alleppey to Marari Beach.

You’ll be able to walk oceanside pretty much the entire way.

If there’s no beach, you can make a slight detour through village roads or to the main road. During monsoon season the water may also essentially wash away the beach. But again, it will be possible to make a detour along the road.

By sticking to the beach, you’ll comes across a few stretches of beach that locals use for fishing so you’ll see a lot of boats.

No matter how you go, it can make a good  day trip from Alleppey .

Alleppey Travel: Day trips from Alleppey - to Kainakary, Kuttanad. Kerala, India

This is another day trip from Alleppey that can be good with a scooter rental.

You can get here by rickshaw too. But unless you make arrangements with your rickshaw driver about pick-up, it may be harder to find a rickshaw back to Alleppey once you get dropped off at the waterway here.

It can be possible to find a bus back. (Which also means you can get a bus TO Kainakary!)

And once again, if you’re able to find a place to rent a bicycle in Alleppey, or you’re staying at a guesthouse that offers free bicycle rentals, then this isn’t such a bad bike ride either!

A trip to Kainakary will take you through some quieter roads of Alleppey district, riding past paddy fields.

Then depending on the route you take, you may end up at dead end where the road ends but continues on the other side of the water.

But that’s where the fun begins! 😉 You can then pay a canoe man 10 rupees (15 cents) to cross the water.

If you’re getting to Kainakary by scooter, you can leave your scooter here.

If you’re getting to Kainakary by bicycle from Alleppey , there’s a good chance you can take the bike with you in the canoe.

Once you make the water crossing, walk about a mile to reach some smaller backwaters canals!

When you’re in Kerala, you may also consider trying the Kerala palm wine, also known as toddy. This is made from the sap of palm trees.

There are toddy shops all over the state, including around Alleppey.

Alleppey Travel: Where to buy alcochol in Alleppey - Kerala palm wine toddy shop. Kerala, India

Does toddy taste good?! Well… I don’t really think so. 😀 But… when in Kerala! So give it a try! 😉

Actually the grape toddy tastes pretty good, but most toddy shops will only have plain toddy. You may also try mixing the toddy with juice to give it some extra flavor.

Here are some reasons why you may NOT want to try the toddy in Alleppey.

Alleppey Travel: Where to buy alcochol in Alleppey - Kerala government liquor shop. Kerala, India

Most of these people are probably buying rum at this government liquor shop in Alleppey. I think it’s safe to say that the people of Kerala like rum. 😉

Sometimes the lines may be long, but if you’re a girl, you can go straight to the front of the line. As a foreigner, even if you’re a guy, you can probably also try going to the front of the line. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a girl or a foreigner (or both) that people were telling me to go to the front.

Rum and coconut

The Kerala state drink is rum. (Okay, it’s not actually the state drink, but it sure seems like it!)

And Kerala literally means “land of coconuts” in the local language of Malayalam. (This is true.)

So it’s only fitting that when in Kerala…

You must have a drink in which you mix rum with fresh coconut water! 🙂

Alleppey Travel: Alcochol in Alleppey - Kerala rum and coconut water. Kerala, India

Rum, coconut, and pineapple (aka pina colada!)

Kerala also isn’t a bad place to make a FRESH pina colada drink!

Alleppey Travel: Alcochol in Alleppey - Kerala rum, coconut water, pineapple. Pina colada drink. Kerala, India

I actually made this with backpackers when I was at a hostel in Varkala, but Alleppey is a perfect place to make it too!

It would help to stay at a guesthouse in Alleppey with a kitchen and smoothie blender!

It would also help to stay somewhere that the staff will help you break open a fresh coconut. 😉

Alleppey Travel: Alcochol in Alleppey - Fresh coconut water at guesthouse near Alleppey Beach. Kerala, India

And even better if you can get a coconut straight from a coconut tree. 😀

Alleppey Travel: Alcochol in Alleppey - Fresh coconut tree at guesthouse near Alleppey Beach. Kerala, India

You can’t get a coconut that’s any more fresh than that, right?! 😀

Best place to stay in Alleppey , obvi. 😉

Public transportation in Kerala

Kerala is well-connected by public bus and train which can make it convenient to travel around Kerala on a budget. Both buses and trains are a cheap way to travel.

And the good news about a state (and country) that’s so populated is that there are always people trying to get somewhere.

And what this means for you as a backpacker traveling around Kerala to populated cities is that the are lots of buses and trains available!

You’ll find several public transportation options when it comes to travel from Alleppey to nearby popular tourist destinations.

You can get to Alleppey by bus, train, and ferry .

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey bus station. India.

What is the bus schedule from the Alleppey bus station?

The aanavandi website is a good resource that can start to give you an idea of buses that are available.

But there are a couple things to note about this bus website:

1. It’s incomplete.

Sometimes I have found that there are more buses available than are listed on the site. I have shown up to a bus station early, only to find a bus that was leaving to my next destination almost immediately.

2. Buses can be delayed.

Well, this is India. 😉

Despite these things, I find it to be useful so you can at least know what options you may have! So use it as a guide, but not an absolute.

The staff at the guesthouse you’re staying in Alleppey may also be a good resource for finding out bus timings for your next destination.

If you’re arriving to Alleppey by bus, and also leaving Alleppey by bus, it could also be a good idea to stop by the office of the “station master” when you arrive so you can ask about bus timings for your next destination.

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey bus schedule timings. India.

All main bus stations in Kerala have this kind of inquiry office, so this would also be a good way to confirm bus timings wherever you are in Kerala.

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey train station railway. India.

What is the train schedule to and from the Alleppey train station?

Pretty much the only resource I used to figure out train timings in India was the trainman app.

It lists both long distance trains and local passenger trains. It can tell you the train schedules, as well as the train fare.

If you’re going a short distance, you can opt to go by train in general class without booking a ticket in advance. Although, sometimes general class can get quite crowded!

But, general class is cheap. So if you’re traveling Kerala on a budget, it’s a good way to go!

And once again, this is India, so it’s always good to manage your expectations when it comes to timeliness of trains. 😉

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey ferry station. India.

What is the ferry schedule from the Alleppey ferry station?

There is really only one ferry that you would take to either get to Alleppey or to leave Alleppey for your next destination.

That would be the Alleppey to Kollam ferry.

As long as you don’t mind a slow and scenic route, this ferry is good for getting from Alleppey to places like Munroe Island and Varkala. Getting to these places from Kollam does require an onward journey by bus, train, or rickshaw.

During season, this ferry is scheduled to leave Alleppey and Kollam at 10:30am.

Best places to visit from Alleppey

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey to Munnar. India.

A trip to Munnar is a trip to the hills of Kerala.

It is most well-known for the Munnar tea plantations , and the biggest reason to visit is for the scenery. You can visit the tea plantation museum, taste some fresh Kerala tea, and go for a walk through tea plantations and spice farms.

From Munnar, you can also hike to the second highest peak in Kerala.

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey to Munnar for Meesapulimala Trek. India.

The Meesapulimala Trek is organized by the Kerala forest department. It includes overnight camping in a tent followed by a day hike to the peak which is at over 8,500 ft. This hike is located in the Western Ghats, which is a mountain range older than the Himalayas, and it also has UNESCO world heritage status .

Bus or train to Munnar from Alleppey

There is no train station in or near Munnar, so your only public transportation option to get to Munnar is bus!

There are a number of direct buses that run daily from Alleppey to Munnar . You’ll get your first glimpse of tea plantations on the bus ride through the hills and it’s beautiful!

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey to Varkala. India.

Varkala is one of the main beach towns in Kerala.

The cliffside restaurants and cafes are among the things that makes Varkala a tourist hotspot. There are countless places to eat where you can enjoy your meal with ocean views.

Kerala is known as the birthplace of ayurvedic medicine, which is prevention and healing through natural remedies. Varkala has a ton of ayuverda centers and ayurvedic yoga retreats , and there are plenty of places along the Varkala cliff that you can get an ayurvedic massage too.

Bus or train to Varkala from Alleppey

The best way to get from Alleppey to Varkala is to take the ferry to Kollam , and then catch a bus or train to Varkala! The ferry is the most Kerala-style way, anyway. 😉

But if you’ve had your fill of the Kerala backwaters, or you’re not fond of taking longer than necessary to get to your next destination, you can also choose to take either the bus or train. This is more or less a matter of preference, but I would probably choose the train over bus for the journey of Alleppey to Varkala. The bus may require a transfer.

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Public transportation around Kerala. Alleppey to Fort Cochin. India.

Fort Cochin is a cute little area in which the colonial influence is still seen through the architecture of buildings. Another thing it’s known for its fishing nets.

It’s the “big city” near Alleppey, so it often makes a backpacker’s itinerary when planning a trip to Kerala.

Bus or train to Cochin from Alleppey

The bus is likely more convenient as there are tons of buses that run from Alleppey to Cochin.

Ask a local, and they may tell you that there’s a bus every 5 minutes.

This may be a slight exaggeration, but the point is that the bus timings both ways from Cochin and Alleppey and Alleppey to Cochin are frequent! No problem in finding a bus by just showing up at the bus station.

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Airports near Alleppey. India.

Alleppey to Cochin Airport (Central Kerala)

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Airports near Alleppey, to Cochin Airport. Kerala, India.

The most convenient airport to Alleppey is the Cochin Airport. This airport is actually located outside of the main part of Cochin. It’s around an hour drive from the main tourist area of Fort Cochin to Cochin Airport.

Bus is always a convenient option for traveling around Kerala since there are frequent timings between major cities. There are direct buses from Alleppey to Cochin Airport, but there are limited timings.

If you can’t manage to catch a direct bus, or it doesn’t work out for your flight time, there are more ways to get to the airport from Alleppey  by bus.

Another option that’s available is to take the train to or from Cochin Airport.

Trains are more limited compared to buses, but you can also look at taking the train as an option to get to the airport from Alleppey.

The closest train station to the Cochin airport is Aluva. You can find train timings through the trainman app.

Similar to taking the bus, for the rest of the journey between Aluva and Alleppey you can take a bus or rickshaw.

You can also get from Alleppey to the airport by taxi .

Alleppey to Trivandrum Airport (South Kerala)

Alleppey Travel: Kerala backpacking itinerary - Airports near Alleppey, to Trivandrum Airport, Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala, India.

Trivandrum is also called Thiruvananthapuram.

The Cochin Airport is definitely the most convenient airport near Alleppey.

But if you’ve booked your flight without thinking of where in Kerala you want to go, it’s not too bad to get to Alleppey from Trivandrum Airport, or the other way around.

Here’s how to get from Alleppey to Trivandrum airport.

India travel guidebooks

Lonely Planet India is considered the ultimate bible for backpacking around India.

While it has pretty much no pictures in it to help you decide where to go based on pretty images, it’s full of practical information in specifics of traveling from one place to another.

It has information like:

  • Best transportation options between cities
  • Cost of some transportation options, including rickshaws so you know you won’t be ripped off
  • Restaurant recommendations so you can minimize your risk of getting sick in India
  • Hotel and guesthouse recommendations

You could travel with the Lonely Planet India books without needing to get online for research during your trip.

So you could rely exclusively on this book if you are arriving to India without doing much prior research about itinerary planning.

If you will only be visiting South India, you can opt for the much thinner book of Lonely Planet South India.

Lonely Planet Discover India and DK Eyewitness India are helpful because they both have pretty pictures, as well as wide-ranging information about top destinations in India. So if you want to pick the places you want to visit based on getting a visual for it, these books can make a good choice!

So take a look at these books:

  • Lonely Planet India
  • Lonely Planet South India + Kerala
  • Lonely Planet Discover India
  • DK Eyewitness India

India travel guidebook pdf

The most travel-efficient option would be to get the PDF version of these Lonely Planet books.

Or if you want to use the book to plan before your trip to India, and then rely on the pdf version on your phone, that could work too!

Finally…

Alleppey or alappuzha.

Alleppey Travel: Alleppey or Alappuzha? Kerala, India

You may see Alleppey being referenced as both Alleppey and Alappuzha .

Prior to India gaining its independence in 1947, India spent some time being ruled by the British.

Alleppey is the British name, and Alappuzha is the local Malayalam name. (Malayalam is the native language of people living in Kerala.)

So which should you call it?

If you’re a foreigner, I say it’s best that you stick with the British version of Alleppey.

This is because I nearly guarantee that if you are a native English speaker, you will not be saying Alappuzha correctly. 😉 (The biggest thing is that the Z in Alappuzha is not actually a Z sound as we know it in English. To me, it sounds like more of a rolling R sound that you say in Spanish.)

I have found that the majority of locals in Kerala will refer to Alleppey as Alappuzha. (I’m told that Alappuzha is easier for native Malayalam speakers to say.)

But pretty much any Indian working in the tourism industry will refer to it as Alleppey to a foreigner… likely because it’s recognized that Alleppey is easier for native English speakers to say! 😉
