A Great Way to Experience Antigua!

TripAdvisor

This was a better than expected tour. A few passenger were very late so I actually had a solo tour. So I think I experienced and seen areas I probably wouldn't have otherwise. So that was an added bonus. My tour guide Julie was very sweet and kind. I love the fact that we toured within the various communities and even checked out a few local spots; Antigua is such a beautiful island. Over-all this was a really good tour.

Our driver, George, was excellent and tailored our tour to fit our interests. He was very knowledgeable and obliging. We can recommend this tour to anyone visiting as we did off a cruise ship.

We have ordered a day trip by mail after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor. We were on the island with a cruise and the staff was super service minded, responded quickly our emails. The driver was Randy, a happy guy, good and informative driver, we were very pleased with both sightseeing and fantastic beach. Highly recommended.

We had such a wonderful tour of Antigua during our cruise ship stop recently. George, our tour operator, tailored a tour to the needs of all 12 in our group - tasting local delicacies, visiting some lovely beaches and enjoying the natural beauty of this island paradise. Lovely island...lovely people.

12 Antigua Adventures For An Unforgettable Caribbean Trip

A big thanks to traverse events, elite island resorts, and the antigua and barbuda tourism authority for hosting my trip. please also note this post contains affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase i earn a commission. thank you for supporting the site.

“I’ll have a mojito, please,” I said to the bartender, who smiled before turning to make the drink.

I’d learned a few nights prior that despite everything being included, the staff at T he Verandah Resort & Spa in Antigua did not skimp on alcohol.

After one too many Rum Sizzlers, I found myself grabbing the microphone from the resort band and channeling my inner Beyonce.

Well, liquid courage made me  think  I looked like Beyonce, though iPhone footage proved otherwise.

It wasn’t a big deal, though. Nothing was when you were at an all-inclusive in the Caribbean.

Everything was just…easy.

At this luxury Caribbean resort , there were multiple beaches, restaurants, and bars, as well as live entertainment and daily activities. Renting kayaks, paddle boards and paddleboats was a breeze, and there was no need to ever pull out your wallet.

While I’ll admit this wasn’t my usual style of travel, I could definitely see the appeal.

The truth is, while I travel a lot I’m rarely on “vacation”.

This, however, was the epitome of an escape from reality, from sipping coffee paired with sea views on my balcony to drinking local beer while dancing to a calypso band.

It was a blast, though of course, it’s also important to leave the resort and explore the island, something I think many travelers to an island like Antigua miss out on.

To help ensure you have an incredible vacation while also experiencing Antigua adventure and culture, I’m sharing an itinerary you won’t want to miss.

Psst, don’t forget to pin this post for later!

Antigua Trip Video

Before we dive into this Antigua travel guide …

Make sure to watch my trip video above!

You’ll really see what makes this Caribbean island so special, and why Antigua should absolutely be on your list.

While I took most of the footage for the video myself, I want to thank a few incredible content creators who let me use some of their clips, including Michael Ball of Traverse Events (drone shots), Damon of Scooter Snorkeling (underwater snorkeling shots), Nina Ragusa of Where in the World is Nina? (cycling shot), Patrick Muntzinger of German Backpacker (a few of the boat party clips), and Daniel James of Dan Flying Solo (mangrove kayaking clip).

Moreover, the Antigua businesses featured in the video include:

  • The Verandah Resort & Spa
  • The Elite Dancers (aka the Sebastian Family)
  • Scooter Snorkeling
  • Wallings Nature Reserve
  • Shirley Heights Sunday BBQ
  • Island View Restaurant (baked chicken and beer with a view)
  • Tropical Time Out Ice Cream Parlor & Deli
  • The Copper and Lumber Restaurant (seafood pasta)
  • Tropical Adventures (sunset cruise)

After watching, continue reading.

Antigua History

Before researching things to do in Antigua, it’s important to understand the history of the destination.

The settlements of the original Amerindian inhabitants date back to 2900 BC, with the British colonizing Antigua in 1632 .

As British settlers moved to the island, they brought their slaves with them to help work the land, particularly the sugar plantations. According to the BBC , within four years half of the island’s population was made up of African slaves.

Slavery was abolished in 1834, though sugar production continued to be an important economic export. The BBC notes that in the 1960s tourism became the key industry, which it still is today.

On November 1, 1981, Antigua and Barbuda gained their independence.

The government is set up as a constitutional monarchy, electing its own local government. That being said, it’s part of the Commonwealth, and Queen Elizabeth II is the reigning monarch and head of state.

shirley heights antigua at sunset

One thing I didn’t realize before visiting:

Antigua is actually one main island that comprises the country of Antigua and Barbuda. These two main islands are surrounded by smaller islands that are part of the country too, like the uninhabited Redonda.

Apparently, the names were given to the islands by Christopher Columbus, who must have thought Antigua looked ancient in some way (because Antigua means “ancient” in Spanish), and possibly saw some bearded locals on Barbuda or the Bearded Fig Trees (as “Barbuda” means “bearded” in Spanish).

Some also note that Columbus may have named Antigua after an old church in Seville.

Today Antigua also has a new name, or at least a new nickname:

“The Land of 365 Beaches”, a nod to the fact the island has a soft white sand beach for every day of the year.

The Verandah Resort & Spa yoga

Antigua Culture

These beaches absolutely help bring in tourism.

But there is one problem:

As stated above, many travelers to Antigua never leave the resort or get up from their seaside sun lounger.

And while this is a great recipe for a relaxing getaway, it can be argued that if you haven’t interacted with the local people, tried the local food and explored the culture you haven’t truly visited a place.

A few ways to infuse some local culture into your Antigua trip:

  • Try the Antiguan Black Pineapple , touted as the world’s sweetest pineapple.
  • Savor a local dish like ducana — kind of like a sweet potato dumpling — and salt fish. I actually saw two locals argue whether ducana should have raisins or not, so apparently, there is some room to add your own spin.
  • See — and dance to — live local music, like soca, calypso, reggae or dancehall, among other styles.
  • Take part in outdoor activities. The below list of adventures in Antigua will help. Antigua is known for its natural beauty and dramatic scenery, so it’s recommended to get to know it up close.
  • Have a local drink. Visit the Antigua Distillery , known for making Cavalier Muscovado Rum, as well as the Antigua Brewery , famous for the Wadadli Gold beer.

This is just a small sampling of ways to experience the local culture in Antigua.

Is Antigua Safe?

The reason for my visit to Antigua this time around was a press trip, so I was in a group; however, as someone who mainly travels solo , I always make it a priority to look up as much as I can about local safety.

Luckily, Antigua is very safe. I actually have visited alone on a previous trip and think it’s possibly the best Caribbean island for solo female travel . I really enjoy Antigua solo travel and recommend trying it for yourself at some point.

One local guide told me that violent crime, especially murder, is extremely rare on the island. If you encounter crime, it will more likely be pickpocketing.

Of course, you always want to be cautious whether you’re home or on the road, so stay aware of your surroundings.

I recommend purchasing travel insurance as well as packing these travel safety gear items , particularly:

  • pickpocket-proof garments
  • a personal safety alarm
  • and these pickpocket-proof scarves .

travel scarf

While I was in a group, I did visit Antigua solo in 2017 and had an incredible experience.

Especially compared to Caribbean destinations like the Bahamas and St. Lucia , both of which are incredible but very couples-centric, Antigua made me feel safe and right at home, even on my own.

Antigua Adventure Experiences

One of the best ways to explore the island:

Through Antigua adventure experiences like hiking, cycling and even something called “scooter snorkeling”.  More on that below!

1. Hike The Pillars Of Hercules

If you’re interested in Antigua adventure, don’t miss this gorgeous trek.

Hiking in Antigua is a great way to get to know the local landscape, especially the stunning views of the Caribbean and Atlantic.

This moderate 5.4-mile trail begins at Galleon Beach , weaving together woodland and history as you pass ancient graves and cistern ruins dating back to the 18th century.

At the halfway point, you’ll come to one of Antigua’s best viewpoints:

Shirley Heights .

shirley heights view antigua

This restored military lookout showcases gorgeous views of the English and Falmouth Harbours from 490 feet — and is also where a lively local barbecue with live music takes place on Sundays .

From Shirley Heights descend down toward the Atlantic to get up close to the dramatic limestone Pillars of Hercules , naturally carved into the cliffside by Mother Nature.

pillars of hercules

The finale:

Walking along a white sand beach touching the crystalline waters of Antigua’s English Harbour .

Your jaw will hurt from hanging open the entire time!

2. Trek Signal Hill For A 360-Degree Antigua View

Another incredible Antigua hike is Signal Hill within Wallings Nature Reserve .

The reserve features 1,680 acres, with a prominent feature being the historic reservoir.

It was originally built between 1890-1900 to hold 13 million gallons of water for local villages; however, after a long drought from 1912 it was reforested.

wallings reservoir

Still, as you do this Antigua rainforest hike you’ll see the reservoir along with ruins of dams, pumping stations, and trenches.

While there are a number of trails to choose from — including a five-hour hike that takes you to Rendezvous Bay Beach — I opt for Signal Hill.

This Antigua hike is a moderate 2.24-mile trek that takes you through the rainforest. Along the way, it offers a 360-degree view of Antigua, with views of reefs, mountains, beaches and more. In fact, on a clear day you can see Barbuda!

signal hill hike antigua adventure

While the ending is noteworthy, the trek itself is lovely, too.

After walking up a large hill, our group ascended a set of root steps known as the “Highway to Heaven”. Near the top, we became enveloped in lemongrass, the scent filling the air along with blowing cotton from the silk cotton tree.

From a mid-way vista, it’s possible to see Cades Reef along with the Caribbean islands of Montserrat , Redonda and even Guadeloupe , where I’d recently traveled .

Having our incredible guide Refica Attwood, who also happens to be Wallings’ Executive Director, also meant gaining a ton of local plant knowledge.

For instance, did you know elephant ear leaves can be used as an umbrella, fan or even as a container for food?

signal hill antigua

Additionally, Attwood shared the story of the “naughty” sandbox tree, where Antiguan parents threaten to take badly behaved children and leave them there. On a happier note, the fruit of the tree is often used for jewelry.

Then there is the strangler fig tree, which, as the name suggests, makes for a bad forest neighbor if you’re a tree.

3. Go “Scooter Snorkeling” In Antigua

This Antigua adventure is definitely quirky.

Actually, I’d never heard of a scooter snorkeling tour before.

Our snorkeling group met Damon, the owner of Scooter Snorkeling, at Galleon Beach, the clear waves of the English Harbour lapping up against the shore.

While I expected the scooter to look somewhat like what delivery people in New York ride, this actually resembled a small vacuum.

scooter snorkeling antigua

After attempting to figure out how to sit on it and then realizing that was impossible, I came to find that maneuvering the scooter was actually really easy.

There are start buttons on both sides, and you simply hold one down at a time to start moving. This is so you can regularly give each finger a break — because they will get tired.

There are three gears, and the scooter can move up to four miles per hour, either forward or even down toward the bottom of the sea floor.

tropica fish antigua

Damon led our group through the water, pointing out sea turtles, lobster, manta rays and schools of tropical fish in the reef. We even saw a shipwreck and the famous Pillars of Hercules mentioned above.

When asked why he started the company, Damon noted that he wanted to create an experience for people who had trouble swimming but who wanted to snorkel.

How beautiful is that?

Watch the trip video here to see what this experience is really like:

4. Hike Up The Middle Ground Trail

I was absolutely not expecting to go on a hike when I stumbled upon up this trail.

In fact, I was heading to The Copper and Lumber Restaurant at Nelson’s Dockyard , a cultural heritage site and marina in Antigua’s English Harbour.

Arriving early, I joined a few of the women on my press trip in going to check out a nearby viewpoint.

While on the trail, we suddenly saw a family of goats…

And began following them up the hill in our open-toed shoes, because, well, how could we not?

goats in antigua

This Antigua adventure took us up the Middle Ground Trail, which I later learned is named after the Middle Ground Military Complex built between 1791 and 1793 that stood there until 1854, when the British army left Antigua and it stopped being used.

Interestingly, the trail itself was once used by soldiers as it connected several military outposts.

It’s a stunning trail, with numerous viewpoints and, of course, adorable goats.

Our only problem was we were all in sundresses and sandals. At one point, we needed to hold a rope to make it up the steep incline.

Luckily, we arrived safely at the top and were able to take in this view:

middle ground trail view of english harbour

From there, the trail extends to Pigeon Point Beach , touted as one of Antigua’s most beautiful beaches.

5. Spend Time Doing Water Sports In Antigua

Antigua is a top wellness destination , especially with all of the active offerings.

Most properties, whether you’re staying at a small boutique accommodation or all-inclusive hotel in Antigua, offer onsite watersports.

At The Verandah Resort & Spa , snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and Hobie Cat sailing are all included at their onsite beach.

kayaking in antigua

If you want to get offsite, there are a number of popular tours, including:

  • Sail & Snorkel In Cades Reef
  • Antigua Reef Riders Self-Drive Boat and Snorkeling Tour

6. Bike, Hike & Kayak Antigua

If you’re looking for a three-in-one adventure in Antigua, you can book a Triflexcursion .

Along with learning about Antigua’s history and culture, you’ll explore the island by biking, kayaking, and hiking.

The two-hour tour begins with biking through St. John’s, before hopping in a kayak to explore Antigua’s mangroves.

To finish, you’ll do a short leisurely hike around Fort James or Fort Barrington , two important Antigua landmarks providing insight into Antigua’s past.

antigua fort

Another highlight is getting to visit a cafe owned and run by a former Miss Antigua.

If you’re nervous about cycling through a city, Sunday mornings tend to be quieter as many locals head to church.

That being said, the tour really is perfect for all experience levels on any day.

The company owners, Mark and Giles, will make sure you have a great time.

7. Other Active Adventure Antigua Tours

I didn’t partake in these tours personally, but they are well-reviewed and on my bucket list for next time:

  • Antigua Zipline Canopy Adventure from St John’s
  • Sail and Snorkel in Cades Reef
  • St. Mary’s Mud Buggy Experience
  • SoCoHo Half Day Jeep Safari- Lagoon Kayak & Reef Snorkelling

Culinary Adventures In Antigua

I’ll admit on this trip I spent quite a bit of time dining at the all-inclusive Verandah Resort & Spa, as well as its sister property, The Pineapple Beach Club .

That being said, I did take some time to eat around the island.

8. Eat Local At Ruth’s

When I asked the local tourism board where a nice local place to eat was, they mentioned Island View Restaurant .

After pointing the location out on Google Maps to my taxi driver, however, he nodded his head and said, “Ah, yes, you mean ‘Ruth’s’.”

Baked chicken in antigua

Apparently, Ruth is the owner of this delicious establishment, which also offers an elevated deck showcasing gorgeous views of surrounding islands.

There is no paper menu. Instead, a man named Bill told me I could order baked chicken or stewed chicken with callaloo rice, shredded carrot, and roasted potatoes.

“Baked, please,” I smiled. “Can I also have a local beer?”

Bill nodded and took me into the attached convenience store, pointing to a fridge in the back.

I grabbed a cold bottle of Wadadli, the condensation cooling my hot skin, and proceeded to savor the best meal of the entire week-long trip.

ruth's antigua

Recommendation:

On the way back to your hotel, stop at  Tropical Time Out Ice Cream   for a cone of rum raisin ice cream or passion fruit sherbert.

The ice cream parlor is walkable from the hotel, and they serve food like burgers, chicken nuggets, and fries, too.

9. Party At The Shirley Heights Barbecue

As stated above, on Sundays you can join enjoy a local barbecue at Shirley Heights .

Along with local food, live steel drum bands and locals selling hot sauces, you’ll take in gorgeous views, particularly stunning at sunset.

SHIRLEY HEIGHTS

This is a great spot to savor local cuisine like Grilled Antiguan Lobster   paired with a rum punch.

10. See A Show & Chow Down At The Outhouse

This Antigua restaurant is part of The Pineapple Beach Club.

The open-air eatery offers gorgeous sea views during the day, while string lights add ambiance at night.

Pineapple Beach Club's "The Outhouse" in antigua

Plus, you’ll love the planks of wood nailed to the deck walls and ceiling, signed by past guests with names, dates, and notes.

When I visited The Outhouse I got to see an open-air performance, which was followed by a delicious all-you-can-eat barbecue.

11. Take A Cooking Class In Antigua — With Rum

This is another Antigua adventure for my next visit.

I heard so many incredible things about Nicole’s Table – Cooking With Rum .

nicole's table antigua

The Caribbean has a rich history of rum that dates back to the 17th century when sugar plantations discovered that fermenting and distilling molasses — a byproduct of sugar refining — produced alcohol.

Today rum is the spirit of choice in the Caribbean, whether you’re in a beach hut hangout or hotel cocktail bar.

This four-hour class plays on that, and each local dish infuses the spirit in a delicious way.

You’ll learn how both light and dark rums can enhance meals in different ways, while also getting to cook with a local in her home.

12. Attend A Seafood Festival

Every Friday, the Copper and Lumber Restaurant at Nelson’s Dockyard hosts a seafood buffet.

You’ll dine outside right on the water, enjoying heaping plates of seafood pasta, whole fried fish, grilled mahi-mahi, stir-fried shrimp and more.

There is also a bar serving, beer, wine, and rum punch if you’d like to imbibe.

The Copper and Lumber Restaurant antigua

Another bonus to this experience, at least when I went, was how friendly the chefs were. You can learn a lot about local life in Antigua just waiting in line for your meal.

It’s worth noting the significance of Nelson’s Dockyard, as well.

Along with being Antigua’s largest national park, it’s also the world’s only continuously working Georgian dockyard, according to National Parks Antigua .

In the 18th century, it was the only dockyard in the East Caribbean that could handle large ship repairs.

Today, a variety of yachts and boats use the dockyard, which retains its historic charm — there are even historic forts — while showcasing modern amenities.

The dockyard is named after British Hero of Trafalgar, Horatio Nelson, who was captain of the H.M.S Boreas from 1784 through 1787. He spent a lot of time in Antigua ensuring British laws were followed in the colonies.

Responsible Tourism In Antigua

I want to end this post by talking about responsible tourism in Antigua.

The island is full of ethical adventures, allowing visitors to meet and support locals and enjoy the stunning landscapes without causing harm. Most bars and restaurants don’t automatically give you straws, which is great.

That being said, I noticed a few attractions where wildlife is made unwild to support tourism.

Please remember that when booking tours in Antigua — or anywhere — that touching wildlife or doing things that cause them to act unnatural, such as attracting them with food, can have serious negative consequences.

Before booking an activity, do your research.

Ask yourself:

“Does this seem like normal behavior for this animal?”

If you love wildlife, watch these animals from afar and make sure you’re acting in a way that won’t have a negative impact.

Are there any Antigua adventures you’d add to this list?

Antigua’s unspoiled natural beauty goes beyond its white-sand beaches and clear waters. The island’s lush landscapes and tropical woods are ideal for eco-tours and trekking, making it a nature lover’s delight.

Hiking trails meander through dense rainforests, across volcanic landscapes, and up to scenic viewpoints. One such viewpoint is Shirley Heights, which offers panoramic vistas of the island. Remember to bring your camera, because the sights you’ll encounter are truly postcard-worthy.

Eco-tours, on the other hand, are guided excursions that provide a comprehensive look at Antigua’s unique flora and wildlife. A professional guide will introduce you to the native plant and animal species as you learn about the island’s unique environment.

Finally, one unique eco-tour experience in Antigua is visiting the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in Barbuda. Accessible only by boat, this sanctuary is home to one of the largest frigate bird colonies in the world. This eco-adventure captures the essence of Antigua’s natural splendor and is a must-see for bird watchers and wildlife aficionados.

Safety Measures and Tips

Safety Measures and Tips

When embarking on any adventure tour, safety should always be your primary concern. Fortunately, Antigua’s tour operators prioritize guest safety and adhere to international safety standards. Regardless of the activity, whether it’s zip-lining, ATV riding, or kayaking, you will be equipped with appropriate safety gear and given a comprehensive safety briefing before you start.

In terms of clothing, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate attire. Quick-drying clothes are ideal for water-based activities and don’t forget your swimwear. For hiking or ATV rides, wear sturdy footwear that offers a good grip. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against the Caribbean sun. Insect repellent might also come in handy for forest-based adventures.

Hydration is essential when you’re out exploring in a tropical climate. It is advised that you bring a reusable water bottle on all of your trips. Most tour operators encourage sustainable practices and will happily refill your water bottle.

Finally, while the goal of adventure tours is to get your adrenaline pumping, it’s crucial not to push beyond your limits. If you feel uncomfortable at any point during the activity, inform your guide immediately. They’re there to make sure you have a fun and safe time.

Best Time to Visit

Best Time to Visit

Antigua is blessed with a tropical maritime climate, meaning it’s warm and welcoming year-round. However, there are certain times of the year that might enhance your adventure tour experience.

The dry season, which lasts from December to April, is regarded as the finest time to visit Antigua. The weather is mostly bright and dry during these months, making them ideal for outdoor activities. Whether you’re zipping through the forests or paddling in the waters, clear skies will enhance your experience.

However, visiting in the wet season, between June and November, has its perks too. The rainforest is especially lush during these months, and rainfall usually occurs in short, heavy showers rather than all-day downpours. Plus, the wet season corresponds with the off-peak tourist season, so you might find fewer crowds on the trails and in the water.

Remember that the Caribbean has a hurricane season that lasts from June to November. While hurricanes are not common in Antigua, it is always a good idea to check the weather forecast and heed any advice from local authorities and tour providers.

Adventure Tours for Different Skill Levels

Adventure Tours for Different Skill Levels

Antigua’s adventure tours cater to a wide range of skill levels. If you’re new to outdoor adventure activities, fear not. Many of the activities, like zip-lining and ATV riding, do not require any prior experience. Comprehensive teaching is provided at the outset, and experts will accompany you every step of the way to assure your comfort and safety.

For intermediate adventurers, kayaking and paddleboarding might be an excellent choice. While beginners can enjoy these activities near the shore, those with more experience can take on the challenge of open water exploration, paddling to nearby uninhabited islands or hidden coves.

Experienced hikers looking for a challenge will enjoy trails like Mount Obama (formerly known as Boggy Peak), the highest point on the island. This trail offers a more strenuous hike, but the panoramic view from the peak is a rewarding payoff.

Remember, the aim of these adventure tours is to enjoy the beautiful Antiguan outdoors. Choose activities that suit your comfort and skill level, and don’t hesitate to ask tour operators for advice. Antigua has an experience for everyone, whether you’re an adrenaline addict or a first-timer seeking for a thrill.

Local Companies Offering Adventure Tours

Local Companies Offering Adventure Tours

When it comes to Antigua adventure tours, several local companies have built stellar reputations for their service, safety standards, and of course, the thrill factor.

One of the most popular companies for zip-lining is the Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour. They offer a variety of tours for different skill levels, and their experienced guides will take you zipping through the forest with ease. If you’re looking for an ATV adventure, look no further than Island Routes. They provide well-maintained cars and will accompany you on some of Antigua’s most stunning off-road tracks.

For water-based adventures, Antigua Paddles is a go-to for kayak and paddleboarding excursions. They provide guided excursions of Antigua’s tranquil mangroves and hidden beaches, as well as snorkeling possibilities. Another great option is Paddles Snorkel and Kayak Eco Adventure, which offers a fantastic mix of kayaking, snorkeling, and even a little bit of hiking.

For hikers and nature lovers, the Eco Tour by Eli’s Adventure Antigua comes highly recommended. Their knowledgeable guides lead you through the island’s diverse landscapes, providing fascinating insights into Antigua’s ecosystem along the way.

Remember, booking with reputable tour companies not only ensures a high-quality experience but also supports the local economy. Plus, their intimate knowledge of the island often means you’ll discover hidden gems that you might not find on your own. Whichever company you choose, rest assured that Antigua’s adventure tour operators are dedicated to helping you create unforgettable memories.

Adventure Antigua

Seclusion - balancing luxury and practicality.

Adventure Antigua has been taking guests to the most beautiful coastal destinations by boat since 1999.

Starting by Eli Fuller, a third-generation Antiguan adventurer, Adventure Antigua is different from many other snorkeling and sightseeing tour companies because each trip has been carefully designed to ensure that guests get the most educational and authentic day out on the water possible.

All of the crew have joined the team because of their love of the ocean and their goal is to make sure that your day out with them is like one spent with long-lost relatives and one which will be the best day of your holiday in Antigua and Barbuda.

The Eco Tour

This tour, famously known as “Eli’s Eco Tour” uses an open 52-foot powercat designed to get into shallow waters and tight spots around the reefs.

Local Antiguan and former Olympian Eli Fuller grew up on the North coast of Antigua, spending most of his spare time boating, windsurfing, snorkeling, and diving in the pristine eco-system of the North Sound area. His knowledge and love of these unspoiled waters, with their mangrove and reef habitats, prompted the design of his famous Eco-Tour which has now been running since 1999.

Eli’s aim has always been to make everyone who comes on the tour feel like they have spent the day with old friends and his crew is proud to claim that the personal attention they lavish on guests would not be surpassed if they really were family members from abroad.

The emphasis of the tour is on the ecology and history of the area. The warm, clear waters, protected by over twenty little islands, countless reefs, flats and mangrove nurseries are always calm and there are perfect opportunities for spotting some of the local residents, including Turtles, Frigate Birds, Herons, Pelicans, Spotted Eagle Rays, Sting Rays, Barracuda, Osprey, Terns, Noddies, Laughing Gulls, and the beautiful Tropic Birds. The crew will talk about local flora and fauna and the interesting scientific turtle project at Jumby Bay, and guests will be entertained by their anecdotes and stories of local history and folklore.

During the tour guests have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities. Before lunch, a snorkeling lesson will be given to those who have not snorkeled before or who want a refresher. All equipment is supplied, and crew members will accompany both guided snorkeling sessions after lunch. However, if you simply want to relax, there is plenty of shade on the boat and of course, easy ladders for those of you who fancy a refreshing dip.

There is also a chance to bathe in the natural jacuzzi at Hell’s Gate island. And throughout the day there will lots of time to take those souvenir photos that will make you the envy of your friends back home! Local fruit juices and other refreshments are available throughout the day and the delicious lunch is served on the boat while it is moored in one of the breathtaking bays of Bird Island. As the tour draws to a close and the boat heads home into the setting sun, Eli’s “secret recipe” rum punch is presented to make a perfect end to a perfect day.

The boat itself is extremely spacious and comfortable and has a freshwater shower and a restroom. Designed in the USA and US Coast Guard certified for 49 passengers, numbers on this tour are deliberately kept lower (max of 31) to enhance the casual and relaxing feeling, Eli wants his guests to experience.

You will leave this tour feeling that you have been welcomed into a very special community of the most privileged visitors to Antigua and Barbuda: those who have had a taste of what is really means to have grown up in the islands and have been let into the “secrets of the North Sound”. Snorkeling gear, food, and drinks are provided.

antigua adventure tours

The Xtreme Circumnavigation

The Xtreme Circumnavigation tour is a full-day powerboat tour that goes right around the coastline of Antigua.

After passing through the North Sound area, the first stop is Stingray City Marine Park.

There you will spend the normal 45min-1hour long session in the water with the rays & other marine life – it’s a natural reef & sandbank so there are lots of things to see. We continue around the island stopping at Antigua’s largest offshore deserted island, Green Island, for lunch.

While the crew is setting up, guests can have a wander around the island, having a swim on the North beach. After lunch, the boat heads south to Nelson’s Dockyard where Captain will point out the historic colonial structures and give a short talk explaining what they were used for. The second snorkeling session is at the Pillars of Hercules where the limestone boulders enter into the water at the mouth of Nelson’s Dockyard – at the base of the Shirley Heights cliff.

The last stop is at the magnificent Rendezvous Bay, a secluded beach on the south side of the island, where you can swim, snorkel, or beach comb & enjoy our homemade delicious rum punch.

Adventure Islands Tour

This is an amazing new tour that is not like anything that has ever been seen in Antigua and Barbuda with themes of ecology, history, and adventure all while maintaining a desire to be off the beaten track.

Guests are collected along the west coast of Antigua by boat and taken into the Northeast Marine Management Area, the Eastern Caribbean’s biggest Marine Park. There are over two dozen little islands and cays nestled between wonderful reefs which all create a barrier to the Atlantic Ocean’s waves and swells.

After zigging and zagging between these beautiful areas over its azure waters, the team navigates guests over to the private Laviscount Island. Laviscount is a gem of natural wonder with a historical significance that has been carefully and expertly prepared to host adventurers. The wooden docking area alone will captivate you as shoals of fish swim by. Laviscount is fringed by the most beautiful red mangrove plants and upon arrival, you know that you’re in for a treat. After the hosts give a short briefing, you will visit the giant Aldabra tortoises. Words just won’t do the experience justice but suffice to say that this will be another vacation highlight. You will have almost 3 hours on this island and unfortunately, you’ll find it won’t be long enough. You will be served lunch up under the wooden Pavillion then the guides and hosts will show you the Lesser Antillean iguana which is a rare and fascinating native species to this part of the Caribbean. The macaw parrots will say hello as you explore.

From here you will take a short hike through the middle of the island where artifacts from an ancient Amerindian settlement can be found. You will learn some interesting history about some of the region’s original inhabitants and how important these offshore Islands were to their survival. After a little walk to the most windward-facing bluff with its astonishing vistas of Seaton’s Harbour, guests will have a choice of snorkeling along the mangroves or returning to spend a little bit more time with the giant tortoises.

Then it’s time to say goodbye to the captivating Laviscount Island and to cruise over to Hell’s Gate. Since 1999 we’ve been taking our guests here to explore the amazing rocky bridge, limestone caves, and natural jacuzzi.

You will have time for some more adventure, with some guided snorkeling through the coral reefs before cruising home and serving up the historically important and equally potent traditional rum punch. What you’ve just done on this day will live with you forever.

10 of the best things to do in Antigua, from jungle adventures to the most beautiful beaches

A ntigua is renowned for its coastline. This Caribbean island – one ‘half’ of the country of Antigua and Barbuda – offers a beach for every day of the year.

And while you may need weeks to explore all of these, you’d want far longer to fully explore Antigua . The island contains a range of activities that belies its modest size, from exploring colonial towns to kayaking around Caribbean islets.

English Harbour, Nelson’s Dockyard and the capital provide daytime entetainment, nightlife and opportunities to learn about this captivating country. A day trip to Barbuda is always an option – as is lying on a picture-perfect beach – but be sure to see inland too, from the island’s thick rainforest to the sweeping views available from Shirley Heights.

A little research will go a long way on this island, so here’s a selection of the best things to do when you visit.

Tour the capital

St John’s has long been a popular destination for Caribbean cruises , but nowadays this colourful capital is more than just a brief stop-off point. Tropical vegetation covers the hills that climb up from the harbour, with a number of charming Caribbean buildings scattered throughout.

The capital is home to many of Antigua’s main heritage sites, including the ruins of 18th-century British forts (Fort Barrington and Fort James), the city’s cathedral and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. Two of the city’s two most popular neighbourhoods, Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, are known for their colourful architecture, local vendors and some of the island’s best shops and restaurants. They remain two of the most characterful places in the city despite occasionally being filled with cruise passengers.

There are a handful of beaches near the capital that offer both relaxation and water sports (more on them below), and those looking for a little more activity can visit the Cedar Valley golf club, home to the island’s only 18-hole championship course.

Catch a sunset at Shirley Heights

Hike up to Shirley Heights for one of the best views in the country. This old military viewpoint stands over Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour, and looks out onto azure waters as far as the neighbouring islands of Guadeloupe and Montserrat. Though it stands just 150 metres above sea level, the hike to the top is reasonably challenging, and there are taxis to take less adventurous visitors to the top. Visit on Sunday to see the area at its most atmospheric, when vendors sell food and rum and bands play as the sun goes down.

Discover the island’s beaches

It pays to do some research when visiting an island that has a different beach for each day of the year. Depending on where you base yourself, there may be nearby town beaches, large bays or secluded coves, but considering the size of the island, you’ll likely be able to visit a few different coastlines during your trip.

Unlike those in other popular destinations, Antigua’s ‘fully equipped’ beaches still provide an abundance of natural beauty alongside their variety of restaurants, bars and water sports. Dickenson Bay, Long Bay, Fort James Beach and Hawksbill have all the amenities dotted along their sands, but those who crave remoteness and real peace should head to Half Moon Bay, Rendezvous Bay or Ffryes Beach to discover some of the most beautiful places on the island.

Take a day trip to Barbuda

Antigua lies just 90 minutes away by boat from the other part of the country. The two islands are separated by around 30 miles of Atlantic Ocean, and tourists can take a quick journey between the two with round trips that cost about £70 (these usually leave early morning, around 7am, and return mid-afternoon).

Barbuda is far smaller than Antigua but still boasts enough to fill a day trip, from the coral sands of Pink Sand Beach to the 170 bird species in the Codrington Lagoon. Notable spots include the only major settlement, Codrington, and the sparkling white sands of Princess Diana Beach, named so because of the late royal’s love of holidaying there.

See Nelson’s Dockyard National Park

This national park is one of the main landmarks in Antigua, and is home to several of its highlights, from the aforementioned Shirley Heights to the annual Antigua Sailing Week. It stretches across the island’s southern coastline, offering 12 miles of hiking trails, Unesco-listed Georgian buildings and the charming, often busy, waterfront of English Harbour.

As well as offering sweeping views across the water (both at sea level and Shirley Heights), the area is popular for tourists keen to learn about local history (whether that of the island at Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, slavery at 8th of March Project or archaeology at the Rum in the Ruins tour), enjoy a meal with a view or simply stroll around the picturesque grounds.

Visit English Harbour for the Friday fish fry

English Harbour sits across the water from Nelson’s Dockyard, and the two are often visited together as some of Antigua’s main attractions. The ‘harbour’ is actually a small town spread around a natural harbour, and on Friday nights both the Harbour and the Dockyard come alive for ‘Seafood Fridays’, with the most notable event held at the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel in English Harbour. Expect fried conch and grilled lobster alongside live music and free-flowing drinks.

Explore Betty’s Hope and the Devil’s Bridge

Two of the island’s highlights lie close to each other in the east, so it makes sense to explore both within the space of a few hours. You’ll likely arrive at Betty’s Hope first; this former sugar plantation, originally constructed in 1650, is the best preserved of Antigua’s 100 sugar mills, and is now an open-air museum where visitors can learn about the lives of those affected by the slave trade, the history of plantations and the process behind sugar production.

Carry on east to arrive at Devil’s Bridge, part of the eponymous national park and one of Antigua’s most striking natural sites. A mile-long road takes you to the ‘bridge’ itself; a natural limestone arch under which roll the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

See some wildlife

Antigua offers visitors several opportunities to see local wildlife, both in animal sanctuaries and in their in natural habitats. If you prefer to observe animals in their own homes, head first to Stingray City, an area of shallow water near the mainland where the local stingray population has become attuned to interacting with humans. Near Galleon Beach lie the Pillars of Hercules, a rock formation that is home to plenty of turtles that can be seen during snorkelling trips.

If you prefer to stay (mostly) on land, make a journey to Laviscount Island, where giant tortoises, iguanas and macaw parrots are all commonly seen. Families will enjoy the Donkey Sanctuary, where 150 donkeys roam a 43-acre site (visitors can feed, groom and even adopt the animals).

Hike through the inland rainforest

Though Antigua is arguably better know for its coastline than its rainforests, this island is home to a markedly different landscape once you travel inland. As you move away from white sands and azure seas, you’ll be met by tall hills covered in dense vegetation and thick jungle; this environment provides great hiking trails such as those in the Wallings Nature Reserve. Visitors here can join guided walking tours where they can see tropical plants and plenty of local wildlife while learning about the reserve and its nature.

Kayak through mangroves and reefs

Along with the usual water sports and sailing offered on beaches and harbours throughout the island, there is plenty of opportunity to explore Antigua by kayak. You can visit Atlantic coastline, tiny islands and exotic mangroves on a guided tour, with the area around North Sound Marine Park the best place to go. Alongside paddling through reefs and mangroves, you can laze on the beach and even swim or snorkel with turtles as part of the half-day tour.
