Size and Dimensions

What size is a visa photo? Your Australia Visa 35x45 mm photo size must be 35x45 mm. This means that your head must be between 35 and 36.75 mm from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head.

The photo must be in color, but the colors must be natural and not altered or edited — any filters or effects that change them are forbidden.

Keep in mind that there should only be one subject in the photo, which is you. This means that no relatives, friends, or children should be in the frame. An acceptable Australia Visa 35x45 mm photo should solely represent the person applying for the visa.

Head Size and Position

Aside from the specific measurements for a visa picture size, there are a couple more things to note. The head must be centered within the frame and take up 50-69% of the image, and the photo should be taken at eye level, i.e., at the same height as the applicant’s eyes.

The photo must be clear and in focus, with no blurriness or distortion. A blurry photo is a sure way to get your application rejected.

Visa photos must have been taken within the last six months. This ensures that the photo accurately represents your current appearance (hairstyle, weight, facial hair, etc.).

Background, Contrast, and Shadows

The background color of the photo should be plain white or off-white, so avoid using any patterned or colored backdrops. Other visa photo rules include sufficient contrast and no shadows on your face or behind your head. Ensure that your face and features stand out clearly in the photo and that the lighting is even.

You can smile, but it must be a natural smile rather than a big, toothy grin. Overall, the face should have a neutral expression, so don’t force a smile if it doesn’t come naturally to you.

Your eyes should be open and visible in the photo, with no hair, clothing, or other objects obstructing them. Remember that your eyes are very important for identification, so no closing, squinting, or hiding in any way. Also, you should be looking directly at the camera lens.

Red-eye will be considered a form of obstruction. To prevent it, avoid using the camera flash if possible because the light can reflect off the back of your retina and create a red reflection in your eyes. If you must use a flash, try looking slightly away from the camera.

If you normally wear glasses, you should wear them in your visa photo, too. Make sure that there is no glare or reflection on the lenses; it’ll be better if your glasses have an anti-reflective coating. The frames shouldn’t cover any part of your eyes, especially your pupils.

In case you have a medical condition that requires you to wear dark glasses or other eyewear, you’ll need a statement from your doctor.

Your entire face, including your forehead and eyebrows, should be visible in the photo. Therefore, most types of headgear, like hats or head scarves, aren’t permitted.

However, if you wear a head covering for religious reasons, it’ll be allowed in the visa photo as long as your face is still fully visible. For hats or head scarves worn for medical reasons, ask your doctor for an official statement.

Resolution and File Size

The ideal resolution for a visa photo is 600 x 600 pixels, and the acceptable size for the file is anything less than 240 kilobytes. For the right Australia Visa 35x45 mm size, make sure to use a high-quality camera or smartphone — you’ll be able to crop it and still maintain the required resolution.

Attire, Clothing, and Dress Code

Wear everyday clothing that you would normally wear in public. This means you should avoid uniforms, costumes, or clothing that looks like a disguise. Also, choose clothing with a plain, solid-colored background over busy patterns or prints.

A beard or other facial hair is acceptable if it doesn’t prevent identification, but you should have roughly the same facial hair at the time you travel internationally.

A natural, everyday look is best for visa photos. Consider sticking to just a light foundation or concealer, little mascara, and a touch of lip color.

Studs or small hoops are a good choice, as they won’t detract from your face or hair.

The last thing worth mentioning about the main Australia Visa 35x45 mm photo requirements is quantity. That’s simple enough — you’ll typically need to provide two identical photos.

Australia Visa 35x45 mm Photo Examples

In this section, let’s analyze some examples of acceptable and unacceptable visa photos.

Sample photos:

Below are examples of correct and incorrect photos

sample_photos

Requirements for Adults

For adults, the photo size must be 35mm x 45mm, with your head measuring between 35mm and 36.75mm from chin to crown. The background must be plain white or light gray, with no patterns, shadows, or unevenness. Your facial expression must be neutral with both eyes open and looking directly at the camera, and you cannot wear glasses or headwear except for medical or religious reasons. Your clothing should be plain and non-reflective, without any logos or slogans.

Photos of Babies and Children

Here are the steps to help you get a successful photo of your child:

  • Find a plain, light-colored backdrop to create a neutral background.
  • Position the child facing the camera. Make sure the child is facing the camera directly, with their head straight and eyes open.
  • Get down to their eye level.
  • Get the right distance. The child should be about 4 feet (more than 1 meter) away from the camera so that you can capture their full face.

Specifics according to the Religious Situation

If you have religious or cultural reasons for wearing headwear, it is allowed as long as it does not cover any part of your face. However, you should ensure that your face is clearly visible, and that the headwear does not cast any shadows on your face.

Can I Take a visa Photo with My Phone?

If you’re taking the photo yourself, here’s what you need to do:

  • Find a plain background with no harsh shadows.
  • Set up a tripod or stand for your phone.
  • Stand or sit straight with your shoulders back and look directly at the camera.
  • Make sure your face, from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head, takes up around 50% of the photo. Having a little extra space will make it easier to adjust the dimensions.
  • Set up a timer ( iPhone or Android ) or use a remote control to take the photo.

Do I Need a New visa If My Appearance Has Changed

It depends. If your appearance has changed significantly enough that you can’t be identified from your current photo, you’ll need to get a new visa with the correct photo. For example, if you dyed your hair a completely different color, a photo with your natural hair color won’t do. But if you got a slightly different haircut, your current photo should still accurately represent your face.

US Passport Photo Size: Closing Thoughts

When it comes to taking visa photos, it’s easy to overlook the specific requirements. But these guidelines exist for a reason, and they will save you a lot of hassle and delay down the line. So, make sure you look directly into the camera with a full face and open eyes, wear normal clothes, and double-check the visa photo size requirements before sending off your application.

Also, avoid taking a selfie, wearing glasses or a uniform, using a colored background, retouching the photo or adding filters, having other people there, or using a damaged photo.

The AI technology will accurately analyze and edit your photo and help you avoid the pitfalls of submitting an incorrect or low-quality image. How to Get Your Australia Visa 35x45 mm Photos Taken

Before you snap that selfie and upload it onto our visa photo maker, there are a few things you need to know. From choosing the right backdrop to perfecting your pose, you should consider everything.

Option 1: Visit a Professional Photographer

When you can make a visa photo online for free, there isn’t much equipment needed for the task. If you have a camera, great, but a smartphone with good photo quality will also do. Just take selfies in a well-lit room or ask someone to take your picture.

Option 2: Take Your Own visa Photos

A light solid scene helps keep your face the focus of the photo. It also makes it easier for facial recognition technology to identify you. Sure, our tool can adjust a few things here and there, but it’s always better to start with a good foundation of a white background right away.

Option 3: Use online-service

Ideally, you should use natural light for a visa photo at home. Take your photo near a window or outside on a sunny day but watch out for the shadows that come from direct sunlight. If natural light isn’t available, create a well-lit environment with artificial light sources like lamps or a ring light. When positioning your sources, experiment with different placements to achieve a flattering diffused effect.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i wear makeup or facial cosmetics in my visa photo.

Yes, you can wear makeup, but it should be moderate and not alter your natural appearance or create glare in the photo.

Is there a restriction on the color of clothing I can wear?

While there is no strict rule on clothing color, it’s advisable to avoid colors that closely match the background, as this may affect the visibility of your outline.

What if I have a temporary facial mark, bruise, or injury?

If you have a temporary mark or bruise, it’s generally acceptable as long as it doesn’t cover or distort your essential features like eyes, nose, and mouth. However, if you can wait for it to heal before taking the photo, it would be ideal.

Can I submit a photo with a beard or mustache?

Yes, facial hair is acceptable as long as it doesn’t obscure your features or cast shadows on your face. If you usually have facial hair, it is okay to keep it for the photo.

Do I need to remove ear piercings or other jewelry for the photo?

Small jewelry like ear studs is generally acceptable. However, large pieces that cast shadows or obscure facial features should be removed.

What is the process for submitting a photo for an e-visa?

The process generally involves uploading a digital version of your photo in the specified format (usually JPEG). You will be given an option to upload your photo during the online application process. Make sure to check the specific guidelines for e-visas, as they may vary.

Can I submit a photo that was used for another country's visa?

As long as the photo meets the Australian visa photo requirements and is recent (usually taken within the last six months), it should be acceptable.

Are there any rules about photo editing software?

Editing to correct color balance or remove red-eye is generally acceptable. However, you should not use editing tools to alter your physical appearance, like changing the shape of your face or removing facial marks.

How long does it take for my photo to be approved or rejected?

This can vary, but if the photo meets all requirements, it should generally be approved along with your visa application. Any delays due to the photo would usually be communicated to you through the application process.

Can I smile with my mouth closed, or do I need to maintain a completely neutral expression?

A completely neutral expression is required. That means no smiling, even with a closed mouth, as it may slightly change the appearance of other facial features.

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
  • Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
  • Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
  • Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

If you haven’t already, read the  Australia Visa Guide  to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. For example, most Indian passport holders get a 3-year valid Australian visa, whereas Phillippine passport holders get a 1-year valid visa. Pakistan nationals get a 6-month validity.

You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

Visa extension

Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to  extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

Facial Expression and Posture

When you take your Australia visa photo, make sure you meet the following requirements for posture and facial expression:

  • Sit or stand straight. You have to face the camera and look straight ahead. Make sure your shoulders are square to the camera and that you’re not tilting your head up, down, or to the side.

  • Make sure your eyes are open and clearly visible. Your pupils and irises (colored portions of the eyes) must be clearly visible in the photo.

Clothing and Accessories

When taking an Australia visa photo, it’s important to ensure that you are dressed appropriately and that your photo meets specific requirements. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Hats or head coverings. Generally, you should not wear a hat or head covering that obscures your hair or hairline in your visa photo. However, if you wear a head covering daily for religious purposes, you may wear it in your photo as long as it doesn’t cast any shadows on your face and your full face is visible.
  • Glasses. In general, eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos, except in rare circumstances where they cannot be removed for medical reasons. If you’ve had ocular surgery recently and need to wear glasses to protect your eyes, you’ll need to provide a medical statement signed by a healthcare professional. If eyeglasses are accepted, they should not cover your eyes, cause glare or shadows, or distort your eyes in any way.
  • Clothing. You should wear clothing that you would typically wear on a daily basis when taking your visa photo. However, uniforms should not be worn unless it’s religious clothing that you wear daily.
  • Hearing devices or similar articles If you typically wear a hearing device or other similar articles, you may wear it in your visa photo.

Requirements for Young Children and Babies

The same requirements in regard to size and quality apply to Australia visa photos for young children and babies as well. Also, keep the following requirements in mind:

  • The child or baby should be facing the camera. If your child cannot sit upright, it is recommended to lay the baby down on their back on a white or off-white sheet.
  • The background must be white or off-white. They can be lying down or sitting up, but the background should always be white of off-white.
  • The child or baby must have their eyes open. Although for very young babies, it can be difficult to keep their eyes open, try to get the baby’s attention by making a noise or using a toy to encourage them to look at the camera.
  • Do not be in the picture with your child. You must not be in the picture holding or propping up your child.
  • Do not use any props. There should be nothing in the picture with your child, such as toys or decorations, as they can distract from the child’s features and may not meet the Australia visa photo requirements.

Should I Print Out the Pictures?

Yes, you should print out the pictures for an Australia visa application. You will be required to provide two printed copies of your photos, depending on the type of visa you are applying for. The photos must meet the specific requirements set by the Australian authorities and must be printed on high-quality photo paper.

Medical Exemption

  • If you cannot remove your glasses for medical reasons, please include a signed note from your doctor with the application.
  • If you wear a hat or head covering for medical purposes, submit a signed doctor’s statement verifying the hat or head covering in your photo is used daily for medical purposes.

Important Notes for Australian Visa Photo

When applying for an Australia visa, it’s important to provide a photo that accurately reflects your current appearance. Keep in mind that even if your photo is not more than 6 months old, the Australian embassy or consulate may ask you to submit a new one if it doesn’t represent your current look. You’ll need to obtain a new photo if:

  • You’ve had significant facial surgery or trauma, made a gender transition, or undergone a significant amount of weight loss or gain.
  • If you’ve added or removed numerous or large facial piercings or tattoos, a new photo will be necessary.

However, minor changes such as growing a beard or coloring your hair usually won’t require a new photo submission as long as you can still be identified from the photo in your visa application.

australian tourist visa photo size

The Essentials of Australian Visa Photo Guidelines

Recent Photograph: It's imperative that the photograph is taken within the last 12 months to accurately represent the applicant's current appearance.

Dimensions and Composition: The photo must measure 45mm x 35mm and should capture the head and shoulders against a plain background. Ensure a clear, full-face view, facing the camera directly.

Background Details : Opt for a plain, light-coloured background – white or light grey – devoid of patterns or distractions. This ensures the focus remains on the applicant's features.

Lighting and Quality: Adequate lighting is crucial. The photograph should be well-lit with no shadows, ensuring clarity, focus, and no blurring or pixelation.

Positioning and Alignment: Center the head within the frame, with the top of the head within the top quarter of the photograph. Maintain eye level and a straight head posture looking directly at the camera.

Avoiding Alterations: The photograph should remain unaltered, unedited, and unretouched. Any manipulation through software, resizing, or cropping is not permissible.

Specific Considerations for Children

For children under 18, certain guidelines apply:

Children must face the camera directly, with a centred head and a neutral facial expression.

Avoiding head coverings is preferable unless worn for religious or cultural reasons, in which case they should not obscure the face.

Ensuring Application Success

Adhering meticulously to these Australian visa photo requirements is crucial. A well-composed, unedited photograph, aligned with these guidelines, significantly enhances the chances of a successful visa application. A deviation from these guidelines could potentially lead to delays or issues during the process.

Australia Visitor Visa Guide

Home to the Great Barrier Reef and other natural wonders, Australia is on the travel bucket list of many people. If you are not a citizen of a country with a visa waiver agreement with Australia and want to travel to Australia as a tourist, you will need a Visitor visa (subclass 600).

In the following sections, we'll navigate through the visa types, eligibility criteria, application procedures, and essential tips for a seamless experience.

A visitor's or tourist visa to Australia is suitable for recreational trips, guest visits, or short-term study visits. You cannot use it for employment. Australian visas are not pasted into the passport; they're obtained electronically before the trip.

There are several streams to apply for this visa:

  • Tourist stream (apply in Australia);
  • Tourist stream (apply outside Australia);
  • Sponsored family stream: for those whose travel is covered by relatives in Australia.
  • Business visitor stream;
  • Approved Destination Status stream: specialised visas for Chinese nationals visiting Australia for personal or work reasons.
  • Frequent traveller stream.

A quiz on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website can help you select the proper type of visa.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs determines the tourist visa duration. It can grant a visa for a 3, 6 or 12-month stay in the country, single or multiple entry. The Department evaluates the wishes of the applicant and the reasons for travel.

Visitor Visa for tourist and business travel is often issued for up to three months. The number of entries is determined on an individual basis.

To apply for a visa on your own, you must contact the Australian embassy or visa center in your country of residence. Beforehand you should study all types of visas, decide on the right option, and collect the required documents.

To apply for an Australian visa online, you must register with the ImmiAccount system on the Commonwealth Department of Immigration website. You must select the correct visa type and fill in the necessary sections of the online application form. The final steps of the process are attaching supporting documentation and paying the consular fee.

If you prefer to bring the papers in person, the embassy has a drop-off box where you can put a sealed envelope. There is no need to make an appointment or wait in line for that.

After you receive a letter from the embassy telling you to submit your biometric data, you need to make an appointment at one of the Australian biometric data collection centers within two weeks. The sooner they are submitted, the sooner the documents get processed. Failure to submit biometrics can result in visa rejection.

The checklist for Australian tourist visa is as follows:

For almost all streams, the cost is AUD150, if applying outside Australia. The Frequent traveller stream is AUD1,120, while Tourist stream applications within Australia cost AUD380. For Sponsored family stream applications, the Immigration service may ask for a security bond from your sponsor.

If you want to speed up the procedure, you can pay an additional A$1000 for the visitor visa fast-track fee.

Foreigners can extend their Australian visas while already in the country. This is done online at ImmiAccount system , in the standard procedure. Note that not all tourist visa holders can renew their Australian visa once they run out. To renew, you must:

  • Be from an eligible country;
  • Prove your good health by passing medical tests;
  • Hold a valid visa;

If you check all those points, you may apply for an extension. Make sure to apply on time, as not having a visa during your stay makes you an unlawful noncitizen, which may end in detention, deportation, or a ban from applying for an Australian visa in the future.

Australian tourist visa rejection reasons

To make a positive decision entry, the visa officer must ensure that your trip's purpose is real and that you have sufficient funds. The applicant will be rejected if there is any doubt on these points.

Among factors affecting the issuance of an Australian visa are:

  • Personal, employment, or financial obligations that encourage the applicant to return to their home country ((such as a full-time job);
  • Purpose, anticipated travel time, vacation dates, and applicant's plans.
  • The character and behaviour of the applicant.

The most common reasons for refusal are:

  • Insufficient amount of money in the account;
  • Incomplete data in the application form;
  • False information.

In case of rejection, the applicant receives a letter stating the reasons and providing information about the revision. After correcting the deficiencies, supplementing the package of papers with missing documents you can reapply.

Australia Passport Photo and Visa Photo Requirements, Rules, Guidelines, and specifications

A snippet of how to take these photos is above. There are quite a few additional guidelines and rules to consider before snapping away. To assure government compliance, be sure you understand the following requirements:

  • Every application needs two photos. This is true no matter how many people are submitting one, including children.
  • Relaxed, natural expressions allow for better facial recognition than one with a smile. Resist the temptation to smile. Mouth needs to be closed completely and not open.
  • Facial piercings are allowed so long as they do not give off a reflection or black the visibility of your face.
  • If you wear prescription glasses every day, they can be worn in the photo as long as there is no glare or obstruction on your eyes. Sunglasses or ‘transition’ lenses with any tint are not allowed.
  • No one else should be in the photo with you.
  • A photo older than six months will not be accepted.
  • Your hair can be down as long as the face can be clearly seen. Head pieces such as hats, beanies or hair accessories are not permitted. Headgear for religious purposes are OK if the face is not blocked.

For pictures taken digitally:

  • No retouching of the picture in any way. This includes red eye removal or smoothing out blemishes or other skin issues.
  • Camera used must be 1.2 meters away at the very least.
  • High quality, glossy photo paper must be used for prints.
  • Use good lighting so the face has the same amount of light on every part.

Rules and requirements for babies, infants, and newborns Passport and Visa photos

Each child receiving a passport or visa will need to have a photo. Group shots are not acceptable. Every child must be photographed separately, this includes infants. Kids are trickier and take a bit more time to take proper photos of. Don’t let that discourage you though. The Australian government understands and allows for looser regulations regarding children:

  • Children under the age of three can have their mouths open but eyes need to be open as well.
  • No one can be in the photo with them.
  • Toys, bottles and other objects are not allowed in the photo.
  • Face and tops of shoulders need to be squared with the camera. The child’s head cannot be tilted.
  • Kids over the age of 3 are expected to be photographed as outlined above.
  • All photos must comply with the technical rules and regulations such as sizing, color, brightness and contrast.

Photo Requirements

The easiest thing to do is to get your passport photo taken by a professional passport photo provider

  • Post offices
  • Professional photographers
  • Large chain stores with printing facilities
  • Many camera stores
  • Some pharmacies and chemists
  • Other established reputable businesses.

We recommend against the use of online passport photo services and mobile apps. You may be in danger of identity fraud.

We’ll attach your photos to the form when you lodge it. Don’t try this yourself, as you might damage them.

Photo size and quality

This is what we require:

  • Two identical, good quality colour prints, less than six months old, produced using dye sublimation, not from an inkjet printer
  • No retouching of any kind (including removal of background, moles, wrinkles or scars)
  • Clear, focused image with no marks or 'red eye'
  • Plain white or light grey background that contrasts with your face
  • Uniform lighting (no shadows or reflections), with appropriate brightness and contrast to show natural skin tone
  • Face centred and looking at the camera straight on; not tilted in any direction
  • Hair off your face, so that the edges of your face are visible
  • Eyes open, mouth closed
  • Neutral expression (not smiling, laughing or frowning)

Photos have to be 35mm to 40mm wide and 45mm to 50mm high. The size of the face from chin to crown can be up to a maximum of 36mm, with a minimum of 32mm.

Head coverings

If you usually cover your head for religious reasons, then you can wear the covering in your passport photo.

Religious head coverings have to be plain, without patterns (even small patterns), and be worn in a way that shows your face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.  The edges of your face on either side also have to be visible.

Jewellery and piercings

Jewellery can’t obscure any part of your face, especially the area around your eyes, mouth and nose. There can’t be any reflection from rings or studs.

Glasses are not allowed in passport photos.

If you cannot remove your glasses for medical reasons, the frames can’t obscure your eyes and there can’t be any reflection from the lenses. Note: vision impairment alone is not an acceptable reason to wear glasses in a passport photo.

Hearing aids

If you usually wear hearing aids, you can wear them in your passport photo - this applies to adults, children, and infants.

Babies and infants

For infants (under three years of age), a photo with an open mouth is acceptable. The photo has to comply with all the other requirements. No other person or object can be visible in the photo.

Medical exemptions

If you can’t meet these photo guidelines because of a medical condition, you’ll need to show us a medical certificate or fill in a declaration form that explains why.
