ABC7 News tests BART's Trip Planner app on route with transfers - Building a Better Bay Area
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- BART may be the closest thing the Bay Area has to a regional public transit agency, but there are a lot of places it does not go. That means many riders have to transfer, sometimes multiple times and between multiple agencies.
Just over a year ago, BART launched a new Trip Planner app https://www.bart.gov/planner to help you find your way and figure out how much your trip will cost. We put it to the test in a ride with no car involved.
BUILDING A BETTER BAY AREA: BART Week 2020
We started our commute in Dublin, an area with lots of homes and not so many jobs. Many people who live in and around Dublin work in San Jose, so that is where we headed. We used the Dublin Civic Center as our starting point and San Jose State University as the end point.
The Trip Planner App is run by BART, but also includes information for other Bay Area transit agencies. It is designed to give you the best route, using all available public transportation, even if BART is not part of the trip.
The app told us our trip would take an hour and 59 minutes. At the same time, a search of Google Maps showed it would take just 40 minutes to drive to our destination.
You can follow along on our video to see all the twists and turns, but the rough summary is that we started on a bus run by Tri-Valley Wheels. After a quick ride, we made it to the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station.
Next, we took a BART train to Bay Fair in San Leandro, then transferred to another BART train for the rest of the ride to Warm Springs in South Fremont.
BART WEEK 2020: What's the cost of your commute?
From Fremont, we got on a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) bus, rode to San Jose, then transferred to another VTA bus for the final leg.
The trip was smooth and right on time, with no problems. The bus drivers were especially helpful, making sure we got the right connections, but it still took three buses and two BART trains to get to our destination.
The return trip was a little faster - an hour and 45 minutes, instead of two hours. Overall, BART's Trip Planner was a good solution to help us navigate a challenging route. However, the app's fare estimate was wrong because it does not account for the confusing range of discounts when you transfer between agencies.
The actual cost of the round trip $23.70. That is not cheap, but it was still $4 less than the Trip Planner app told us it would be.

Exploring the advantages of utilizing a transit planner in the Bay Area offers commuters and travelers a wealth of benefits. The primary advantage is the ability to save time and avoid delays, as the planner provides up-to-date information and accurate schedules.
This removes the stress of guessing arrival times and decreases the possibility of missing connections.
Moreover, the planner accounts for any service alerts or disturbances, providing alternate routes or adjusting travel plans to minimize any issues.
In addition to time saved, using a transit planner also presents cost savings. Detailed information on fares and ticket options allows users to plan their trips while considering financial constraints. With options to select walking, cycling, or using shared mobility services, the planner allows users to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable transportation system.
This focus on environmental consciousness aligns with the increasing global concern for sustainable practices and positions the transit planner as an invaluable tool for eco-conscious travelers.

New BART app offers exclusive features for hassle-free travel
Posted: 22 November 2018 | Global Railway Review | No comments yet
The BART app will combine comprehensive information and navigation into one unified platform with personalised preferences.
San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has launched a free BART app on iOS App Store and Google Play Store to provide riders with a seamless experience in both stations and trains.
The official app offers riders end-to-end trip planning, real-time departures with up-to-date data from BART, service advisories and the ability to log favourite trips and stations.
An exclusive feature to the app is BART’s new Trip Planner offering end-to-end multi-modal trip itineraries. It allows BART riders, public transport users and those who walk, bike or drive to the station to input their starting point and destination to receive the most transit-friendly and fastest route. The new Trip Planner includes 31 transit operators and provides interactive, personalised itineraries using the many modes of transportation and transit the Bay Area offers.
The BART app provides many features which will help answer and respond to some of the riders’ questions. This includes real-time departures; schedule timetables; station information; information on secure bike and car parking; escalator and elevator advisories; real-time service disruption information; step-by-step navigation with personalised preferences; the ability to set favourites to save time and key strokes; the power to report a Biohazard feature for items that need immediate clean up; and Spanish and Chinese translations.
“The official BART app makes it easy to avoid traffic and take BART wherever you are going, even if the destination isn’t located right next to one of our stations,” said BART Board President, Robert Raburn. “The app unlocks the potential for a seamless connection between all modes of transportation and gives the user everything they need to navigate a trip in one place.”
BART is already working on future features for the app, such as the ability to pay for verified carpool parking spots and tailored push notifications if service disruptions affect the BART line of choice.
The BART app links to the BART Watch app, which riders can use to report suspicious and illegal activity happening in the stations or in trains.
BART plans to expand its breadth of digital services later in 2018 with a new BART to Airport app offering discounted mobile tickets for group travel to and from the airport.
