Belitung Island Travel Guide & Things To Do (Indonesia)

Bangka Belitung is a pair of tropical islands in Indonesia , and the smaller one (Belitung island) is becoming famous for its incredible scenery and natural attractions.

Belitung island is about the same size as Bali , and just like Bali it has so many amazing things to see and do. It’s even been recognized as a UNESCO Geopark for its unique landscapes.

We spent two weeks here and were blown away by the picture perfect islands and white sand beaches with granite boulders. This is island hopping paradise at its best.

This Belitung travel guide will explain how to get there, where to stay, all the best things to do, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Where Is Belitung Island?

The Bangka Belitung islands are two islands (‘Bangka’ and ‘Belitung’) located just off the southeast coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

Belitung (also known as ‘Belitong’ by the locals) is the smaller island of the two, and it’s surrounded by lots of tiny islands and granite rock formations, making it pretty much heaven for island hopping boat tours!

How To Get To Belitung Island

The Bangka Belitung islands can be reached by air or ferry.

Generally the best way to get to Belitung island is to take a flight into the main city of Tanjung Pandan (TJQ).

Non-stop flights are available from Jakarta (CGK) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL), with one way prices as low as 425k Rupiah (~$30 USD) and a flight time of only 1-2 hours respectively.

You can shop for flights to Tanjung Pandan at Skyscanner.

How To Get Around Belitung Island

The best way to get around Belitung island is to rent a scooter or hire a private car with driver. You can book either of these with your hotel, or with Billitone Capture (+62 853-1555-5288).

The roads on Belitung island are in great shape, and traffic is surprisingly light. We normally don’t travel by scooter, but when we saw how open the roads were on Belitung we couldn’t help ourselves!

If you need a private airport transfer by car, those can be booked with Klook for as low as 75k Rupiah (~$5 USD). In the city, short trips can be done with the Grab or GoJek apps.

What To Do In Belitung Island

• island hopping tour.

There are lots of great things to do in Belitung, but by far the best is the island hopping boat tour in northwest Belitung.

You’ll see perfect white sand beaches, turquoise water, rocky granite islands, underwater coral reefs, and even a Dutch lighthouse from the 1800s.

Do not leave Bangka Belitung without doing a couple of boat tours!

• Leebong Island

Aside from the popular island hopping tours in northwest Belitung, there’s also a nice little island in southwest Belitung that’s owned by the 3-star Leebong Island Resort , which has sea view villas and overwater bungalows.

There are day trips to Pulau Leebong departing from Pegantungan harbor , or you can stay overnight at the resort. Their official website has more info about the day tours. Leebong has a beautiful white sandbar and other things to see.

• Tanjung Tinggi Beach

Possibly the most photogenic beach in Bangka Belitung, with perfect blue-green water and giant boulders. It’s a good sunset spot too.

Tanjung Tinggi can be reached with a 30 minute drive from town.

• Tanjung Pendam Beach

This is the main beach near the town in Belitung, and it sits right on the edge of Tanjung Pandan city.

It’s a great beach for watching the sunset!

• Batu Baginda

This was one of my favorite experiences in Bangka Belitung.

Batu Baginda is a short (but moderate) hike that takes you to the top of an absolutely massive boulder, where you have views of the whole southern half of Belitung island on one side, and the Java Sea on the other.

Better yet, if you have a drone, you can take some aerial selfies to see how tiny you look on top of the boulders!

• Kaolin Lake

This is a bright turquoise mineral lake that’s still being mined today. It’s a unique landscape that makes for some great photos.

The lake is easy to reach since it’s only a short distance from Tanjung Pandan city.

• Balancing Rock

This is a giant balancing granite boulder that’s not too far from Tanjung Tinggi Beach, so it’s easy to combine with other sights on the island.

From the road, it’s just a short 10 minute hike to reach the rock (location here ), and at the top you get nice views of the surrounding countryside too.

This boulder is massive, and great for pictures from pretty much any angle!

Balancing Rock

The balancing rock is one of Belitung’s most peculiar sights

Another angle of the balancing rock. Balinese woman power.

• Peramun Hill

Jungles and hills, with giant boulders, banyan trees, caves, and tarsier sightings.

If that sounds like fun, Bukit Peramun is your thing. This is a dense jungle where you can go trekking and see Indonesian wildlife.

The highlight of this forest is a giant banyan tree called the ‘thousand root tree.’ It’s very photogenic, but it’s hard to find without a local guide.

• Penyabong Beach

This is a secluded beach in southwest Belitung, about 1.5 hours from Tanjung Pandan.

Penyabong Beach has nice white sand and no crowds, but sadly trash has built up here over the years. Please don’t leave any rubbish here. If you can pick some up on your way out, that’s even better.

• Serdang Beach

This is a nice white sand beach with colorful boats, on the east coast of Belitung.

Sadly, there’s a lot of trash at this beach. It’s also a bit isolated and requires about 1.5 hours of driving from Tanjung Pandan city.

Best Belitung Restaurants

The Belitung restaurant scene is still a work in progress, but here are some good options we found:

  • What’s Up Cafe : Great food and good atmosphere. We ate here almost every day. Portions are a little small, but the prices are fair enough. They have indoor and outdoor seating, A/C, good WiFi, and they accept cash or credit cards for payment.
  • Tarsius Coffee : Nice little cafe across the street from Tanjung Pendam Beach. Good place to work, with fast WiFi and lots of power outlets.
  • Warung Bizza : The only hand made Italian wood fired pizza joint in Belitung.
  • La Terase : Local Belitung food with a modern presentation. Super close to Tanjung Pendam Beach.
  • KFC : If you’re itching for familiar food, Belitung does have it. Just throwing that out there. We ordered KFC on the GoJek app one evening when we were too tired to eat out.

Other Belitung Tips

  • Credit Cards: Hit and miss. Some hotels and restaurants in Belitung accept credit cards, but keep cash handy just in case.
  • ATM: There are plenty of ATMs in Tanjung Pandan with good withdrawal limits. Foreign cards work fine in my experience.
  • WiFi: Hotels in Tanjung Pandan generally have decent WiFi. This is quickly improving.
  • Cell Service: Local SIM cards like Telkomsel have good reception in Tanjung Pandan and elsewhere on the island.
  • Apps: Grab and GoJek are both available in Tanjung Pandan. You can use these for short rides or even food delivery to your hotel.
  • Malaria: According to this Lancet study from 2018, malaria has been eliminated in Belitung. That’s great news, but it’s still a good idea to wear mosquito spray to protect from dengue fever.

Belitung Hotels

Is bangka belitung safe.

Yes, Sumatra is safe! We spent weeks here and I’d say it’s a very safe place.

Indonesia is a low crime country in general. Do be sure to wear mosquito spray when out and about, because parts of Sumatra (including Belitung) are known to have dengue fever, just like most of Indonesia.

With that said, we got more than two dozen bites each on our trip and never got sick with anything, so dengue is not exactly rampant here.

Belitung Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Belitung in the comfort and safety of a private car with a driver, my recommendation would be Billitone Capture (+62 853-1555-5288).

Their price is 400k Rupiah ($26 USD) for a day tour of driving and sightseeing in Belitung for 1-5 passengers. That's the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol. For longer distance trips, there may be a surcharge.

If you'd rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 75k Rupiah (~$5) in Tanjung Pandan city.

Best Time To Visit Bangka Belitung

The best time to visit Belitung is generally from April to September.

This is Indonesia’s dry season, so it’s less rainy, with more sun, smoother seas, and better snorkeling visibility.

Months to avoid are November to January, when there’s a lot more rain. If you have to go in the rainy season, give yourself some extra days as a buffer in case of bad weather.

Map Of Things To Do In Belitung

Here’s a map of some of the best things to do in Belitung island. Keep in mind this is far from a complete list, and I’m sure you could find some more interesting sights if you look around.

How Long To Stay

You can see the top highlights of Belitung island in 3 or 4 days, although there are plenty of hidden gems to explore if you have extra time.

We spent two weeks in Belitung and still didn’t see everything.

Hi , that is a fantastic guide of Belitung , really help us to organize our tour for this summer but unfortunately Kloot is not offering the island hopping, nor driver . could you recomemend us another contacts. Thanks

Hi Laura, thanks for pointing that out. I just updated the article with new information. For a driver, you can arrange that with Billitone Capture (+62 853-1555-5288). They can do airport pickups or a private driver for a full day of touring. This company has scooter rentals and island hopping boat tours in Belitung too. Otherwise, your hotel in Belitung should also be able to arrange these things if needed. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions just let me know. Have a great trip to Belitung!

Hi, I’m wondering if it’s expensive to spend 2 weeks in Belitung. Is it easy to find accomodations there?

Hi Kay! Sure, it’s pretty easy to find accommodation in Belitung. The prices are normally a bit higher than Bali, but still not too expensive. You can browse Belitung hotels here . Most of the accommodation is in Tanjung Pandan town.

Thank you very much for introducing this place. Belitung has special significance for me. My father was born here, and when he was in his twenties, he left Indonesia for China for some reasons. Until his death last year, he never returned to the place where he was born. Therefore, I am curious about Belitung where he lived when he was a child. Perhaps one day I will visit here to fulfill his last wish.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, a lot of Chinese Indonesian families live in Belitung. It’s a great island. I hope you can visit someday.

My husband and I have travelled a lot in Indo but I think you’ve beaten us lol We are planning to go back to Sumatra this summer, but this time with our kids. We always said we would go back to Bukit luwang with kids so it’s time to make true on that! Then we are deciding between the Banyak islands or Belitung. Which are obviously not close so we would have to choose… If you had to which one would you go for?! Thanks again for all the amazing tips, Indonesia is our favourite country and we have spent over 2 years travelling it’s amazing islands (across 20 years) so share your love of it!

Hi Kirsty! Would you be flying into Jakarta first? If so, I think I’d choose Belitung since it’s a lot easier to reach than the Banyak islands. The Banyaks have a more private and primitive feel, which is fun, but Belitung also has some very nice beaches and there’s more to see and do, while still not being too touristy. That sounds like a great trip. We loved Bukit Lawang and would love to go back sometime. I’m glad you guys have been able to explore more of Indonesia!

Island with Stunning Beaches

Although not as popular as Bali or Lombok , Belitung is blessed with some of the best beaches of the country. The sand is soft and as white as palm sugar, and some even argue that the sand here is even whiter than that in Bali. Belitung is also surrounded by more than 100 small islands. Almost all of them are decorated with white sand and granite rocks, and only a few are inhabited. One island in particular, the Lengkuas Island is the site of a 19th century antique light house. The Light House was built in Dutch colonial times and offers a beautiful overview of the area. Burung (Birds) Island, Babi (Pig) Island, Pengadaran Island, Lutung Island, Kera (Apes) Island and Jenang Island, are among some of the smaller islands that offer great experiences.

Belitung is small enough that some interesting points on the island can be reached in less than two hours from Tanjung Pandan. However, taxis are non-existant and public transportation on the island is hard to find, so the only practical way to move around is to rent a car or a motorcycle.

From Jakarta , the easiest way to get to Belitung is obviously by airplane. There are several daily Boeing 737 aircraft served by Sriwijaya Air leaving from Jakarta’s Soekarno Hatta airport direct to Hanandjoeddin Airport in Tanjung Pandan, Belitung. All flights from Jakarta to Belitung depart from Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The flight takes 45 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take the Sea route by PELNI passenger ship from the Tanjung Priok harbor, in Jakarta. Keep in mind that the ship only serves travel to Belitung once every 2 weeks. The journey will take about 24 hours.

From the Provincial capital, Pangkalpinang , you can get to Belitung Island by taking the daily Bahari speed boats that will take 4 hours. This is by far the most convenient means of Sea transportation and comes complete with air conditioner. Bahari express leaves daily at 14:00 pm from Pangkalpinang, Bangka, to Belitung, and leaves at 07:00 am from Tanjungpandan Belitung to Pangkalpinang.

Travel to Belitung Itinerary: The Alternative Trip To The Bali of Indonesia

Perfect sand-white beaches exists all over Indonesia, but many are filled with tourists, fancy beachfront hotels and with rapid development. But not Belitung, Indonesia. Roughly the size of Bali and even tagged as “the new Bali”, Belitung was known by outsiders for little more than its tin industry.

I discovered how Belitung could easily be the next Lombok or Bali in the making. Although not as popular as some of the things to do in Bali  or Lombok, Belitung is blessed with some of the best beaches of the country.

The sand is soft and pearl white, and some even argue that the sand here is even whiter than that on some beaches in Bali. Belitung is also surrounded by more than 100 small islands. Almost all of them are decorated with white sand and granite rocks, and only a few are inhabited.

There were plenty of scenic locales that were urbanised to cash-in on the Instagrammable wave. It is clear that many of Belitung’s inhabitants wanted to capitalise on this beauty. But if you go further inland, another problem appears - the mining sector’s continued hold and the challenges of economic diversification are apparent.

I also passed many stretches of palm oil plantations, burned and scarified portions of land that makes it so distressing to see that the natural forests of Belitung are being destroyed. The pangolins in Bangka Belitung are also facing extinction.

The massive land clearing is also facing a change in the weather patterns where an increase in floods seem to be the norm. In 10 years, this place will be ruined and if you can come here to minimise your footprint and see the bigger picture, this will help in creating awareness of places to open our eyes to what’s at risk.

Travelling in Indonesia’s offshore islands in Belitung.

Travelling in Indonesia’s offshore islands in Belitung.

It is a place not perfect with its problems but it is also a place to see beauty through a different lens, experience the slow island life. As someone who always prefers to go hiking and crave the cold chill air of the mountains, I wanted to experience the stillness of the beach life and seek remote spots where it is simply wonderful to talk to locals, eat in their families warung and take the island boat to experience the Indonesian true-blue islands!

You'll barely find nightclubs, party resorts or any palpable signs of Western culture in Belitung.

Among the best things to do while travelling in Belitung to escape for 3 to 4 days are exploring Indonesia’s offshore islands. The beaches are some of the best reasons to visit Indonesia . If you have done a Bali itinerary before jam-packed with activities, here’s an option for a slower-placed Belitung itinerary.

Arriving At Belitung Airport, Taking The Free Bus: Indonesian Generosity At Its Finest

Catching the bus using Belitung’s free shuttle services at the airport to the island

We took an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Belitung and the journey was kept to a minimum - 1 hour 45 minutes. It felt like I was taking a flight back home to one of the underlying islands in Malaysia. But this was far from it! In an eye wink, we touched down this small airport filled with little tourists and a lot of Malaysians keen to explore this not-so-little island.

Everyone was rushing to get their taxi sorted and we didn’t do any of that! No one knows and maybe they’re not very good at announcing their shuttle services, but the airport has a free shuttle service that takes you to Tanjung Pandan, the largest town that has adequate facilities for a small city.

Since there was nobody in the bus and this service was introduced recently in a bid to maintain their tourism hospitality to the laidback Belitung, many people did not know about it! The driver asked us where we’re staying and we told him we’re 30 minutes away from the main town at Tanjung Kelayang Beach and without any hesitance, he offered to drop us off at the doorstep of our hotel and to even stop at Tanjung Pandan to sort our simcard services for us. Tips are encouraged but not mandatory.

Getting Whisked Off To Tanjung Kelayang Beach

this was our beachfront hotel in tanjung kelayang

this was our beachfront hotel in tanjung kelayang

Kelayang-Beach-Hotel-Belitung-Travel-Itinerary.jpg

I was already dreaming of coconut trees, a long stretch of beach, no crowds, a swing to just lounge around and one that was queue-free. The hotel facilities were basic but the view was incredible. So if you want empty beaches, low-key sunbathing and little in the way of development, this is your spot.

It was a sort of a no-frills stay in Tanjung Kelayang and far from the hustle and bustle of Tanjung Pandan. I always wondered why would people want to stay close to the city? Other than benefits of junk food snacking and easy-ish convenience stores, I don’t see how it does anything to your senses.

A Warung, Ayam Penyet and Teh Ais Kind of Lunch

Tanjung-Kelayang-Itinerary-Indonesia.jpg

We wandered around and decided to take a walk along the main streets to see if there were Warungs for us to grab a quick bite. It was a lazy afternoon where your Pak Cik (Uncle) was busy staring into the horizon, lying down on his springy rattan and some of them cooking up feast filled with local chilli spices, smashed chicken (Ayam Penyet) and Teh Ais botol.

The occassional “Hi” and “Bye’s” followed. Many thought we were from India and once we started speaking Bahasa Melayu, it was easy to forge a stronger connection with them.

The Sunset at Kelayang Beach was something

Sunset-Kelayang-Beach-Belitung-Travel-Itinerary.jpg

one of the best places to stay in belitung with a floating restaurant.

We took an evening detour and walked along the entire stretch of Kelayang Beach and came across multiple wrong turns, scenic points, dead-ends filled with large boulders and the still sea. The calm waters and orange light streaked towards the ocean.

We were also in the property of the Eco Beach Tent by Billiton. A floating dinner on the boat surrounding by white sheaths billowing in the wind appeared out of nowhere.

Day 2 Cycling The Empty Stretches in Belitung

Cycling-In-Belitung-Indonesia-Travel-Itinerary.jpg

here’s us just cycling in belitung and stopping to catch waves and Take a breather

It’s awfully hard, though not impossible, to find a long network of decently paved roads in most island and tropical countries. There were bicycle options up for rental at our hotel for 8 hours at about 100,000 IDR. We explored the slower pace of life. We decided it would be nice to stop along the way on a slow ride with wind in our face and explore the quiet beaches and low-key hotels fringing the continuous stretch of Pantai Kelayang.

With our rusty bikes and the endless paved roads ahead of us, it was a breezy day but the scorching hot sunshine was not exactly fun sometimes. It reminded me of my bicycle touring days in Laos , with the exception of the weight and shitty bikes. Sometimes it felt like we were the only tourists on the island, lost, somewhat haphazard but gleefully happy to discover locals who acknowledged our presence.

Bukit Permanun, Interesting But Somewhat Abandoned

Bukit peramun, one of the best view points in belitung

Bukit peramun, one of the best view points in belitung

We decided to ditch our bicycle after few hours and book a scooter for 24 hours to visit Bukit Peramun, a geopark that was teeming with wildlife such as monkeys, birds and cicadas. For 10,000 RP, you get a guide to show you the different trails and the flaura and fauna. The best part of the trek was probably the look out point amongst giant granite boulders - the highest point was approximately 129m above sea level.

While the walk was nice but everything else from the cheesy cars and payment for certain photo spots felt like a tourist trap. I wish the locals gave importance to treasuring the wildlife and making it more educational rather than ruining spots like this with the insta and selfie-craze.

Scootering Up to Mie Belitung Atep

Scooter-Ride-To-Belitung-Travel-Itinerary.jpg

Journeying further in, this time we decided to head to the city towards Tanjung Pandan and try the Mie Belitung Atep and sample the infamous Mee Rebus, known as the original Belitung Atep. Served with crackers, shrimp, fish cake, fried tofu and slices of cucumber - this was a great snack to begin with!

Environmental Mishap, Blue Danau Kaolin (Kaolin Lake)

another environmental disaster, the danau kaolin.

another environmental disaster, the danau kaolin.

It is great that Belitung has gone far ahead to build the Belitung Coastal Community Group (BCCG) which was established in 1998 with the mission to combat the environmental threats caused by mining activities and to implement sustainable coastal ecosystem management.

But Danau Kaolin is still a disaster in its own right. Danau Kaolin is a man-made lake as result of kaolin mining activity and was abandoned without reclamation. It shows the extent of the environmental damaged caused by uncontrolled mining activity! Right now, there’s not much to do here other than take heed of this staggering place!

Tourists are strictly prohibited from entering the lake. Instagram and a few places may have pictures of past bloggers having pre-wedding shoots here which fail to convey the magnitude of the damage caused to these places!

Authentic Belitung Cuisine At Belitung Rumah Makan Belitong Timpo Duluk

Belitung-Food-Rumah-Makan-Belitong-Timpo-Duluk.jpg

We heard raved reviews about trying Belitung’s traditional cuisine at Belitong Timpo Duluk to have the authentic Dulang sets. While it was very similar to Malaysian Kelantanese cuisine, I found the food average at best. It was still a nice and engaging experience to see how Belitung was formed with their nostalgic black and white pictures, a blast from the past highlighting the essence of what makes Belitung.

A Buddhist Temple, Kelenting Sijuk

There are 6 religions in the island including Islam, Buddhism, Christian, Catholic, Hinduism and Confucious and this Buddhist Temple at the end of Sijuk offers an interesting insight into Buddhism in Belitung.

Day 3 Island Hopping in The North Islands

This is one of the main reasons why we were here - to island hop, experience white powdery beaches, snorkel and do absolutely nothing as we spent time in places that were extremely serene and beautiful. We booked a boat from Tanjung Kelayang at 8.00am in the morning for IDR 450,000 for two people. We had the entire boat to ourselves! It was insane how cheap the prices were!

Dedicating an entire day to go island hopping via boat is the best way to experience undivided time in these places. It is highly recommended you pick a weekday when it is much quieter. We experienced some light rain eventhough it was October. The dry season is from April to September and in places like this where the weather is tropical, rain is common.

Tanjung Tinggi

Tanjung-Tinggi-Belitung-Travel-Itinerary-Things-To-Do.jpg

It is the most well-known beach in Belitung. White sand & granite rocks of all sizes alternating, may leave you wondering where all these lumps of boulders came from. You can even climb on them or enter the gaps of the giant rock.

Ultimately this beach became famous in 2008 after the movie  Laskar Pelangi  (Rainbow Troops), which was one of Indonesia's most watched movies, as it portrays the struggling life of some of the island's poor children in a remote school. You may watch the trailer  here which was adapted from the award winning book by  Andrea Hirata , a writer who made his mark on the international circuit with his story based on his childhood in Belitung.

Bird island and Garuda Rock

Bird-Island-Garuda-Rock-Belitung-Travel-Itinerary.jpg

Known for its rock formations that is shape like a bird, this is the main draw for a lot of travellers. The Garuda is an eagle or mythical creature that is also Indonesia’s national symbol used in their coat of arms.

To preserve the island, the boat doesn’t stop over here but allows you to see it from a distance.

Snorkelling in Lengkuas Island

Lengkuas-Island-lighthouse-Belitung-Travel-Itinerary.jpg

Lengkuas Island was another famous island known for its lighthouse that stands 12 storey tall which was built by the Dutch 100 years ago in 1992. It was pretty crowded when we went and saw a large group of Indonesians on a team-building trip.

We decided to explore the back part of Lengkuas Island where the beach was quiet and allowed us plenty of time to be on our own! It was nice to swim among nemo fish, cuttle fish and a large school of fishes which I could hardly pinpoint which school they belonged to!

Kepayang Beach

Kepayang-Beach-Belitung-Island-Itinerary-Travel.jpg

It was a never-ending string of beaches but Kepayang beach was stunningly beautiful where the colour constantly changed from deep cobalt blue to a light pale turquoise colour. It is a great place to dive and be part of the marine conservation activities where baby turtles are bred until they are old enough to plunge into the open seas and where coral gardens are being restored.

There were coves with big boulders almost forming our own private pool where it was easy to hop from one to another. It was also a popular spot for a lunch break as they were famous for their BBQ and seafood dishes including their banana fried fritters (pisang goreng).

Seafood Under The Stars At RM Selera Kite

Seafood-Beachside-Kelayang-Island-Itinerary-Travel-belitung.jpg

We were exhausted and absolutely beaten from the long day. It was time to head back and have our dinner at the famous RM Selera Kite. Situated at the seashore in Kelayang Beach and at the beachfront, this restaurant will serve you their fresh seafood from crab, fish, scallop, shrimp and squid in their signature sauce which is to die for!

I loved the fresh grilled fish and its stir fry kangkung and it was nice to take pictures of the night sky and enjoy the cool sea breeze amongst a blanket of stars.

If You have More Time:

Museum Kata Andrea Hirata : The author of  Laskar Pelangi  sequel, Andrea Hirata, erected Indonesia's literature museum here. The museum shows behind the scenes of Belitung in the year 1978 with his memorabilia, and a corner of tin mining equipments. Andrea himself does visit his hometown giving art and music lessons to the local community.

Hiking to Batu Baginde: Batu Baginde is made up of two giant granite formations that are situated next to each other. It is said that one of the rock formations represents male energy while the other represents female energy.

Gurok Beraye Waterfall : The waterfall was sourced from Belitung's highest point, Mount Tajam (510 above sea level). There are deep gorges along the way which makes it a perfect stop for a swim.

It is also worth exploring Tanjung Pandan, the main city centre due to the various Dutch Colonial buildings and shop houses. Most of the governmental buildings are maintained and kept to its original Dutch building code and the old Dutch tin mining housing compound is still kept up.

Hotel Santika (I really loved this place and thought it was super affordable for a nice beach vacation! Although it is a bit far from the main places - it is still worth a stay for 2 days atleast)

Oyo 399 Kelayang Beach Hotel (I stayed here mainly because it was super accessible, it was right in front of the beach and there plenty of eating options plus it was easier to walk over to the jetty for island hopping! The rooms were spacious as well but the breakfast was not that great!)

Lorin Beach Resort (An in-between alternative that is beachfront and really quiet and beautiful too!)

Eco Beach Tent By Biliton (For activities and a whole range of exciting things such as Kayaking, Paddle Surfing, Outdoor BBQ but also for dining in a floating restaurant)

Biliton Hotel : (Heard great things about this place especially for couples or travellers in pairs!)

Getting Around In Belitung

As public transportation on the island is hard to find and the only practical way of moving around is by taxi, or rent a car or a motorcycle. Expect to be asked for Rp400,000 - Rp600,000 per day (all inclusive) for a good car with driver. I downloaded GoJek and seemed to work well in Tanjung Pandan but once you’re in Kelayang Beach, it is better to rent a scooter to get around.

Belitung Tour

For many visitors who come to Belitung, this is the first question that comes to your mind. The Belitung language has several uniqueness, and is actually similar to Indonesian because it is basically Malay. For simplicity most of the words that have the letter "a" are replaced by "e". For example the word "price" becomes "harge", "flower" becomes "bunge". In addition there is another uniqueness that is the letter "u" is replaced by "o", for example "village" becomes "village", and finally "Belitung" becomes "Belitong". So Belitong is a pronunciation of Belitung in the local language. Belitong in the colonial era was known as Billitone.

The word Belitong was first popularized out of Belitung by Andrea Hirata in the Laskar Pelangi novel. In the novel Andrea uses the word Belitong, even the same mention is also used in the film Laskar Pelangi. But, lately the word Belitong began to be used with a more unique purpose, namely as a unifier. On the island of Belitung, there are two districts namely Belitung Regency (West) and East Belitung Regency . East Belitung is a district resulting from the division of regions which previously had only one district, namely, Belitung Regency. So to keep unifying the identity of the Belitung people, the people there call them Belitong People, meaning people from the island of Belitung, regardless of which district they come from.

Wisata Belitug

Belitung people are people who have strong social ties, where mutual respect and respect are highly valued. Guests who come are very glorified and must be served with good manners. Therefore, if you travel to Belitung, you will easily be greeted warmly with a friendly greeting by the Belitung people. Not only with migrants, family culture in the community is very thick. Working together to help each other is a matter of principle. Hospitality and community events are still held strongly by the Belitung people who are always warm and friendly.

If there is an event in a village, such as a wedding, almost all villagers will help, starting from making decorations, cooking to the ritual of the wedding. Almost all villages are involved, so it must be ensured that all families in the village must be invited. Belitung people do not know the hierarchy, so there are almost no aristocratic groups in Belitung. Some families still hold noble titles in the past, which usually have the title "Kiagus", similar to the peerage of Palembang. It's just that the name Kiagus does not have special treatment and position in the community. In the past there were indeed several sultanates in Belitung, namely the Balok sultanate, the Badau sultanate, the Buding sultanate and the Sijok sultanate. The title kiagus could be derived from this empire. Information about the history of Belitung can be obtained from the Belitung Map website. If you come on holiday to Belitung, you will see the population of Chinese descendants seen more than other regions in Indonesia, although it remains a minority in Belitung. Even the Belitung Chinese people still use their native language. But if you have Mandarin skills, you should not be happy just yet, because the language of the Belitung Chinese community is from the Hakka dialect (Hokian). Unlike the Chinese descendants on the island of Java, Chinese people came to Belitung only at the end of the 19th century. They were imported by the Dutch from Yunan province because of their expertise in mining tin. So the origin of the Chinese community in Belitung is from tin workers.

Scrambling Lawang can be interpreted as fighting over the door. In reality it really is like this. Fighting for lawang is an interesting tradition as part of the traditional wedding ceremony in Belitung. The groom along with the following entourage with a variety of offerings usually come like marches to the wedding venue held at the bride's home. As soon as you enter the yard, the bridegroom will be hampered by stretching a scarf along the door. It is from the front door of the courtyard that this unique drama and tradition will begin.

What is drama? Before proceeding, it needs to be explained that one important component of the wedding event committee is hiring professionals who have unique expertise. They are usually a pair of men. This man will join the groom's entourage in the convoy, much like the head of the group. While another person is waiting and guarding the door, which starts from the front yard door, assisted by several people. The door blocking process is dramatic and will be a spectacle for all those present. What did the two men do then? One thing, namely, reciprocated rhyme. The rhymes presented are usually very unique, funny, entertaining and invite the laughter of the audience. This pair of men are usually indeed professional rhyme practitioners in the Belitung community, so the quality of rhymes is very entertaining. The process of reciprocating pantun is usually quite long, can be up to 10 minutes. The barn that is blocking the new door will be opened if the bridegroom gives money (perfunctory) as a sign of entry, then the bridegroom and entourage can pass through the door. The door closing procession will then be repeated again in the next two stages, namely at the entrance of the house and at the entrance to the bridal chamber. This ritual is usually very entertaining and is awaited at every wedding procession in Belitung.

Paket Wisata Belitung

Is Belitung related to the Minang community which is already known to have a maternalistic tradition? There is no history that proves this, especially the Belitung people know the paternalistic line as generally the order in Malay society. But don't be surprised, if you are a man, then you should be prepared to propose. The intended application is actually not an application asking for permission to get married, but rather the official hospitality event of the bride and groom's family. The actual application process could have happened before, but there was no specific procession.

The distinctive feature of the application process is that it is marked by carrying a gift in the form of a large baulo cake. Belitung people call it "Jajak Gede" (big cake). This cake is a symbol of appreciation from the family of a woman's expected male family. The tradition of the arrival of the female family to the male family aims to inform the family of the male party officially that the boy in question has often visited the woman's house. The female family intends to ask whether the male family is serious about continuing the couple's relationship to the marriage level. The program usually takes place smoothly, followed by an agreement on the preparation of the next marriage ceremony.

The Belitung travel guide for those tired of Bali

Beli-where? I got a lot of confused looks when I said I was headed to Belitung because few people have even heard of this place. Most Singaporeans are only familiar with Bali as a holiday destination in Indonesia , and for the time-strapped ones it’s Batam or Bintan instead. But there are over 8,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago and I’m pretty stoked to put together this Belitung travel guide to help you better explore this relatively untouched island paradise.

Thanks to Garuda Indonesia who invited me to check out this new spot on their inaugural non-stop flight from Singapore to Belitung that they launched in October 2018* [ Update June 2019: route has changed, details below ].

How to get to Belitung

How much time to spend in belitung, tanjung tinggi beach, tanjung kelayang beach, burung island + garuda rock, lengkuas island + snorkelling, kelayang island + swimming cave, kepayang island, where to stay: eco beach tent by billiton, sand bar island + mangroves, where to stay: leebong island , bukit peramun, kaolin lake, where to stay: fairfield by marriott, museum kata andrea hirata, laskar pelangi school, galeri daun simpor.

Belitung is a part of the Bangka-Belitung Islands, located east of Palembang in South Sumatra. It was once solely known for tin-mining but is being touted as the ‘new Bali’ with its beautiful beaches and signature large granite boulders.

[Updated Jun 2019]

Belitung Airport Garuda Plane

I took the inaugural non-stop flight from Singapore to Belitung in October 2018 on a media trip with Garuda Indonesia, and it took just 50 minutes to get from Changi Airport to Tanjung Pandan non-stop.

However I recently checked in with Garuda and they have confirmed that they have since removed this direct non-stop route and now you have to go through Jakarta to get from Singapore to Belitung instead. It’s a bit of a pity because it becomes less of a weekend getaway option when the Thanks to my reader Lawrence who informed me about this.

With a transit through Jakarta, the fastest route that Garuda Indonesia offers now takes about 6 hours : 2-hours to fly to Jakarta, a 3-hour layover, and slightly over an hour from Jakarta to Belitung. GA825 departs Changi Airport at 10am and you’ll finally reach Belitung at only 3.10pm .

The return flight seems to offer shorter options with 1.5-hour layovers, shortening the return journey to about 4-5 hours.

H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport is a tiny airport, one of those where you get to walk across the tarmac without any aerobridges or fancy duty-free shops, so don’t plan to spend too much time hanging out at the airport.

Note Belitung’s time is +7 GMT (1 hour ahead of Singapore)

I’d previously recommended this as a quick weekend getaway destination because of the short flight time by direct flight (slightly less than an hour!), but now with the layover, it will take about the same time that you would take to get to Taiwan or Korea. Still doable for a short trip, but a little more hassle with the transit.

If you are short on time, focus on island hopping in the northwest area, but ideally, I think you should spend at least 4D3N in Belitung to get a taste of a variety of activities beyond the island hopping, especially if you want to check out East Belitung. Belitung is 6x the size of Singapore and it takes 1.5-2 hours to get from Tanjung Pandan across to East Belitung.

I was taken around on an organised media trip, in case anyone is interested in the tour agency that planned this itinerary, it is called Bella Wisata Tours & Travel . Check out their website (it’s www.bellawisatatours.com but Google keeps giving me an unsafe warning so I’m not hyperlinking it directly for now, or email them at bellawisatatur [at] yahoo [dot] com or tour [at] bellawisatatours [dot] com

Tanjung Kelayang + North Islands

The number one thing to do in Belitung is to island-hop and enjoy the beautiful beaches, and one of the best places to check out is Tanjung Kelayang in the northwestern corner of Belitung Island, about half an hour’s drive from the town centre of Tanjung Pandan.

I suggest dedicating at least one day to island hopping via boat, and to pick a weekday when it is much quieter. Dry season is from April to September – I visited in October and we did encounter some rainy days as you’ll see from the pix, but keep in mind you are in the tropics, rain happens anytime it wants to in these parts.

Tanjung Tinggi is the most famous beach in Belitung as it was one of the key filming locations for the 2008 movie Laskar Pelangi or the Rainbow Troops (see the trailer here ), which was adapted from the award winning book by Andrea Hirata , a writer who made his mark on the international circuit with his story based on his childhood in Belitung.

The beach was pretty quiet on a weekday, but from the number of stalls set up around I’m pretty sure it gets quite crowded on weekends. The sand was really nice, fine white grains and beautiful clear blue waters. There are plenty of the large granite boulders that Belitung is known for scattered along the coast – we took a bit of a walk and clambered around them for a great sea view.

Belitung Tanjung Tinggi Beach

Most of the northern island hopping tours start from this beach a short drive away from Tanjung Tinggi. There’s a large plaza and very soft white sand and a bunch of restaurants and eateries located around here. If you rather not take a boat, this beach looks like a nice alternative to hang out at, though I’d walk a bit further down the beach to avoid boat traffic.

Belitung Tanjung Kelayang Boat

One of the photo stops on the boat tour of the north Belitung islands is this unusual rock on Burung Island that is known as the Garuda Rock or Batu Garuda because it looks very bird-like with a beak. The Garuda is an eagle or phoenix-like mythical creature that’s also Indonesia’s national symbol used in their coat of arms.

Typically the boats stop some distance out for the best photo ops because you can’t see the Garuda if you are too close, and also tourists aren’t allowed to land on the island these days to better preserve it.

Belitung Batu Garuda Rock

Lengkuas Island is another Belitung icon because of the distinctive lighthouse that stands 12-storeys tall and was built over 100 years old by the Dutch in 1882. You can climb up to the 3rd level of the lighthouse for a panoramic view, but we encountered some pretty heavy rain while on the island so I spent more time enjoying the fine white sand and climbing around the giant boulders.

Belitung Lengkuas Island Lighthouse

Kelayang Island didn’t seem particularly remarkable at first, until our guides took us on a little walk through the island’s vegetation. A short scramble through sometimes slippery rock pathways and jungle, we ended up in a cute little cover amidst the boulders where you can swim and explore the rocks in the water. I’d already changed into dry clothes at this point so I didn’t get in the water, but worth checking out.

Belitung Kelayang Island Sign

More beautiful beaches (are you tired of me saying that yet) can be found on Kepayang Island, but it’s popular largely because it has a large restaurant area serving up great BBQ seafood, and showers + toilets so you can clean up after all the water and sand activities. We enjoyed chilling out with some beer after a hectic morning of activity.

Belitung Kepayang Island Sign

If you want to stay somewhere quiet with a great view, check out Eco Beach Tent by Billiton , located down the beach from Tanjung Kelayang on the main Belitung island. We spent an evening here having tea and checking out their beach, and it’s really peaceful and serene. If you are lucky, you’ll get to see a lovely orange sky as the sun sets.

There are just a handful of huts at Eco Beach Tent facing the sea, built with sustainability and eco-consciousness in mind. The rooms are individual little huts inspired by and built using local materials, and they even have a turtle conservation programme on Kepayang Island.

Check out Eco Beach Tent by Billiton on booking.com [ affiliate link ] or visit their website for more information.

Belitung EcoBeachTent Billiton Beach Boat

Leebong Island

Leebong Island is located off the west coast of Belitung, and they offer a day tour package that lets you visit the instagrammable sand bar island, do a bit of a mangrove tour and then chill out on Leebong Island for lunch and water sports. You can stay overnight at Leebong Island as well if you want to – they have some interesting places to stay in if you want something a little different.

To get to Sand Bar and Leebong Island, head to Pegantungan Harbour to get a boat that will bring you on a little tour. More info here .

This intriguing island isn’t even really an island, but a sandbar that appears and disappears depending on the tide, but some savvy folk set up some swings and hammocks transforming this random spot in the middle of the water into an Instagram paradise. Check the tides before visiting! Along the way, make sure to check out the mangrove trees as well – we passed through a pretty narrow channel with the branches brushing up against the boat and got an up close look at the mangroves.

Belitung Sandbar Island Mangrove

We stopped over at Leebong Island to have lunch and relax for a bit. This recreation island offers activities like kayaking, SUP, beach volleyball among other things, and also has some really nice beaches and waters worth hanging out in. I was happy enough drinking from a coconut and walking around the place.

If you have the time, I’d also check out their cool stayover options, including a 2-storey bungalow and a really cool treehouse! Check out more on their website .

Belitung Leebong Island Sign

Tanjung Pandan – City Centre

Tanjung Pandan on the west side of the island is the main city centre of Belitung Island (and where the airport is located. If you are short on time, this would probably be the best place to base yourself in.

We reached the Peramun Hills in the late afternoon as our main goal was to go hunt for the rare Tarsier monkey (more on that below), but while we were waiting for night to fall and these nocturnal creatures to emerge, we took a bit of a hike through the tree-covered hills of the Peramun Hills.

The trek is fairly short (about 30 minutes) and well marked – I suggest wearing decent shoes because there are a lot of leaves and potentially slippery rocks, and it gets a bit steep at points but otherwise the trek is quite doable for most. I wish we’d gotten there a little earlier because there were some lovely views of the forest canopy from above that I would have like to see with a little more light, but alas it was a bit cloudy that day.

Belitung Peramun Hills Boulders

As it got dark, our guides brought us back down to the starting point and went on a bit of a hunt to find the elusive tarsiers, these tiny monkeys with huge eyes that can only be found on certain islands in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. They called us over when they found one – we had to shoot quickly as bright lights aren’t great for their sensitive eyes, but it was really cool being able to see them in the wild.

Belitung Peramun Hills Tarsier

One of the photographic highlights of Belitung is this aqua blue lake surrounded by white stone which we stopped by on our way to the airport. The lake was formed from the Kaolin mining on the island, and you can see several of these unusual blue patches when you fly over the island (get a window seat!). It was quite overcast so the blue was kinda milky, but there’s something quite surreal about the white and blue combination.

This one is still a functioning mining area, so you can’t get too close – cranes were working while we were there – there is a carpark and a fence that you should stay behind for safety.

Belitung Kaolin Lake Me

One of the traditional local foods to eat in Belitung is Mie Belitung, and the best place to eat it in is Mie Atep. The shop looks deceivingly small from the entrance but actually has more seats hidden in the back. It’s also popular with celebrities whose photos line the walls near the entrance.

Mie Belitung is a yellow egg noodle dish soaked in a sweetish shrimp gravy topped with bean sprouts, cucumber, shrimp, potato, egg and topped with the slightly sourish keropok. I personally prefer something more savoury, but it was a pretty interesting dish. The portion isn’t very big though, wash your meal down with the citrusy Jeruk Kunci.

Belitung Mie Atep Shopfront

Belitung is known for excellent coffee, and the best place to try the local brew is at the oldest coffee shop on Belitung – Kong Djie. There are several branches in Tanjung Pandan, but this one at Jalan Siburik is the original outlet that is always crowded with locals and tourists alike. Black coffee (Kopi O) or coffee with milk (Kopi susu) are the star items here, but I decided on their iced milk chocolate (coklat susu), which was refreshing but not too sweet.

I liked the local chillax vibe of the place – it’s not a fancy cafe and there are cars/trucks rumbling by this busy junction, and you have to keep the flies from attacking your kueh snacks on the table, but you do get that local coffeeshop vibe.

Drinks cost between 8,000 – 18,000 IDR (S$1-2) depending on what you order. Open daily 6am – 11pm, more at their Facebook page .

Belitung Kong Djie Coffee Entrance

We stayed at the Fairfield by Marriott hotel, one of the newer and fancier hotels that you can find in Belitung today, though it looks like more new players will be entering the market in the coming years. I had a pool view room on the first level, which was nice but I kinda wish that the balcony wasn’t sealed up and I could access the pool directly from my deck. The rooms were definitely comfortable and service was good. I’d consider springing for an ocean-view room as it’s right by the sea – there is a beach nearby but it’s not as pretty as Belitung’s other beaches.

We had a pretty tight schedule and spent most of our days outside, only getting back to the hotel at night, so unfortunately (and also because I’m useless in the mornings) my shots are all pretty dim night shots. There aren’t that many amenities nearby – you need to catch a ride to get to the major downtown area in Tanjung Pandan.

The rooms range from around 650,000-2,100,000 IDR (S$60-$200) – My room cost about 750,000 IDR (S$70) per night. Check out Fairfield by Marriott on booking.com [affiliate link] or on their website for more.

Fairfield by Marriott Belitung Exterior

East Belitung

Belitung is a lot bigger than I thought it would be – it’s about 6x the size of Singapore! But besides Tanjung Pandan and the islands, I’d recommend making the 1.5-2 hour drive across the island to East Belitung if you have the time to spare and check out Gantung and Manggar as well.

We were supposed to check out a few other sights here like the Kwan Im Goddess Temple and the Burung Mandi or Bird Bath beach, but alas we were pretty tight on time and had to skip those spots.

If you’ve been wondering what all the fuss about Laskar Pelangi or the Rainbow Troops is about, you can learn more about the book at this colourful little museum in the author’s hometown of Gantung. Set up in 2010, this open-air museum was set up to inspire other young people of Belitung to dream beyond their village, so the exhibits about Hirata also feature many other famous authors and literature amidst bright cheery walls. Don’t go expecting anything super fancy, and the entrance ticket includes a copy of the famous Laskar Pelangi so you can read it for yourself.

Entrance fee 50,000 IDR (S$5), open 930am – 5pm, More on the website .

Belitung Andrea Hirata Museum Wall

One of the major sets used in the 2008 Laskar Pelangi movie was the SD Muhammadiyah Gantong elementary school building set and you can visit a replica of it here in Gantung. I highly recommend checking out the movie if you can beforehand, because it won’t really make sense if you just visit it without any background knowledge – on its own it’s a rather ramshackle looking building with 2 classrooms that you can enter and pretend to be a student in, but that’s really about it if you don’t have any other context. There are some food and souvenirs shops in a mini ‘village’ at the entrance area of this tourist spot.

Entrance fee 3,000 IDR (that’s like… S$0.30)

Belitung Laskar Pelangi School Sign

If you are looking to pick up souvenirs, pop by the Galeri Daun Simpor in Gantung where you can see batik making demonstrations and pick up some batik pieces with local-inspired prints. We arrived around lunchtime and the ladies were all resting then, but it’s not a bad pit stop after a long ride over from Tanjung Pandan.

Across the road is a traditional Belitung house known as Ahok’s House – Ahok is the Hakka nickname of the former Jakarta governor (2014-2017) Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and this was his childhood house.

Belitung Galeri Simpur Batik

I only spent a few days in Belitung and if I had more time, I’d like to explore the east side of Belitung and perhaps the southern bits of the island a little more, but as a first taste, I really enjoyed my short time there and think it’s definitely worth a quick getaway, especially if you want to avoid the tried and tested tourist hotspots. Read a little more about it over at the Wonderful Indonesia website .

This trip to Belitung was organized and sponsored by Garuda Indonesia .

Awesome post there. Heard about this island but have not been there before. In your opinion, is this suitable for family? Maybe with children in Pri school? By the way, how did you move from place to place? Did you based yourself at marriott and move around or you stayed at different areas of the island?

Hi Chuen Buan, I think it's quite family friendly if your kids like being outdoors. Easiest way to get around is to hire a car/driver. I was based at the Fairfield Marriott and took daytrips to visit all these other places :)

Wow great post and full of awesome tips! I have never heard of Belitung before and now I want to go :)

It's pretty under the radar... for now at least! Hopefully it won't become as overcrowded as Bali...

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The first round of the 88th Masters Tournament is finally in the books, with nine groupings having returned first thing Friday to complete Round 1.

Bryson DeChambeau (65) and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler (66), who has won two of his last three starts on the PGA TOUR, completed their first rounds Thursday, and they had separated from the field, but perhaps not for long.

Max Homa birdied the 16th and 17th holes Friday and bogeyed 18 to sign for a 5-under 67. In four previous Masters starts he had never broken 70 and twice missed the cut.

Here are five things to know about Round 1 at the Masters:

1. Scottie Scheffler is on baby watch

Scheffler is coming off victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and THE PLAYERS Championship, where he became the first to successfully defend his title. He fought to the end at the Texas Children’s Houston Open before finishing second by a shot.

He’s also about to become a dad for the first time.

Scheffler’s wife Meredith is resting at home, and the world No. 1 said that while they do not expect the baby to come this week, he would leave the tournament if she goes into labor .

Scottie Scheffler’s comments after Round 1 of Masters

“I wouldn't say I'm very concerned,” Scheffler said after going bogey-free in strong winds Thursday. “We haven't seen any of the early signs. But pregnancy is weird. It can happen at any time. (We have) open lines of communication and she can get ahold of me if she needs to.

“I'm ready to go at a moment's notice,” he added.

2. Max Homa seriously outperformed his record here

Homa has long been vocal about his underwhelming record in the majors, and nowhere has he struggled more than at Augusta National. In four previous starts he had failed to break 70 even once, missed the cut twice, and boasted a career best of T43 last year.

And yet there was Homa, playing alongside Tiger Woods (73) and Jason Day (75), making birdies on 16 and 17 in the resumption of his first round to reach 6-under par, tied with the world No. 1 Scheffler. A finishing bogey gave Homa a 5 under 67, two off the lead, but he given what he’d accomplished here over his career, he wasn’t complaining.

After getting off to a slow start this season, Homa has turned it around at a good time. He would be the third client of sports psychologist Julie Elion’s Center for Athletic Performance Enhancement (CAPE) to win on the PGA TOUR in the last three weeks (Akshay Bhatia, Stephan Jaeger).

3. Rory McIlroy’s 71 was better than it looked

McIlroy was not overly impressed with his first round, and that’s understandable given that he bogeyed the par-5 second hole, played the par 5s in even par, and was six behind DeChambeau.

“Yeah, it was OK,” McIlroy said. “I held it together well. It was a little scrappy.”

That said, it was McIlroy’s best opening round at the Masters since he shot a 3-under 69 in 2018. Those slow starts have been hard to overcome, although he shot a final-round 64 to finish second in 2022, and rallied with three scores in the 60s to tie for fifth place in 2020.

One theory is that the tournament has come to mean perhaps too much to him , a notion that McIlroy does not deny. It’s the only major he needs to complete the career Grand Slam.

His slow starts here have seen him average 73.8 strokes in Round 1 over the last five Masters, when he has failed to break par. He’s also shot second rounds of 77 (last year, missing the cut), 73 and 74 the last three years, so keep an eye on what he does Friday.

4. A healthy Will Zalatoris is contending again

A lot has happened since 2021, when Zalatoris finished second at the Masters to Hideki Matsuyama, but that’s probably an understatement.

The winner of the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Zalatoris has struggled with back issues ever since , missing out on some of the biggest tournaments in golf. Last year he withdrew from the Masters minutes before his opening-round tee time. Soon he was going in for surgery, a microdiscectomy on his back that shelved him for the rest of the PGA TOUR season.

“It just puts things into perspective,” Zalatoris said. “A year ago I could feel the disc slipping and I was kind of hiding it from everybody, including members of my team.

“It's hard not to be grateful being here,” he added, “but I'm even more grateful now.”

5. Tiger Woods is on pace to set another record

Given that he’s gotten in just one competitive round this season, an opening 72 before he withdrew with the flu at The Genesis Invitational, five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods could have been excused for not having anything close to his best in the difficult first round at the Masters.

Instead, despite strong gusts of roughly 20 mph on Thursday, the 48-year-old Woods fought the course to a draw , going 1-under though 13 holes. He returned Friday and made three pars and two bogeys for an opening-round 73 . He stood tied for 35th place and will try to make the cut for a 24th consecutive time. That would break him out of a tie with Fred Couples and Gary Player for most all-time.

“The wind was all over the place,” he said of the conditions Thursday.

As for how he’s feeling, he said: “It’s there. The body is OK.”

Friday saw him walking with his hands in his pockets and otherwise looking cold, but the weather will warm up for his second round. Woods has said his surgically repaired body feels best in the heat.

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

  • Share full article

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

belitung travel tour

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument on Public Square is hosting its popular Tunnel Tours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 27-28. Online ticket sales begin at 10 a.m., April 11, on the Monument’s website . A limited number of tickets are available in advance; standby tickets will be available on tour days. Tickets are $5.

The Monument is dedicated to the 9,000 people from Cuyahoga County who served the Union in the American Civil War. Designed by Cleveland native Levi T. Scofield, it has been open since 1894. A concentric system of tunnels and walls beneath the Monument serve as its foundation.

Scofield, interestingly, was a captain in the Civil War. He went on to design several public buildings and monuments. In addition to the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, his projects include the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield and the Schofield Building -- now the Kimpton Schoefield Hotel -- in downtown Cleveland.

The 30-minute tours include a guided walk-through of the tunnels with additional guest speakers in the Memorial Room. The Memorial Room is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. year-round.

Ticket sales and donations during the event will support Monument programming.
