The blue cruises in turkey for enjoyable sailing holidays, sailing in turkey , by: cameron deggin, by: cameron deggin.

Enter the world of Blue Cruises in Turkey – an extraordinary sailing holiday of Turkish coastal treasures and pristine waters aboard traditional gulets or luxurious yachts. Also called blue voyage, with crystal-clear waters as your playground and charming villages as your backdrop, jumping on board a Blue Cruise in Turkey promises unparalleled journeys. In this article, we embark on an odyssey to discover Blue Cruises and the Turkish coast, an unforgettable and sought-after escape in the heart of the Mediterranean.

Blue Cruise in Turkey

About Blue Cruises in Turkey

What is a blue cruise in turkey.

A Blue Cruise in Turkey, also known as a "Blue Voyage" or "Blue Tour," is an iconic Turkish experience that allows travellers to explore picturesque coastal landscapes and historical sites along the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Typically conducted aboard traditional Turkish wooden boats called gulets or occasionally luxury yachts, Blue Voyage cruises offer immersive experiences of Turkey.

They are a unique form of sailing holidays that accommodates luxury passengers but also caters for budget travellers. Originating in the mid-20th century, Blue Cruises were inspired by the adventures of travellers and artists who sailed along the Turkish coastline, captivated by the turquoise waters and the timeless charm of coastal villages. Overall, the Blue Cruise routes offer chances to disconnect from the stresses of daily life. It is like joining another world.

What to Expect from a Blue Cruise

The heart of the Blue Cruise is the sailing journey itself. Sail on a traditional wooden gulet, a classic Turkish sailing vessel of comfort and charm. Enjoy the gentle sway of the boat while traversing beautiful turquoise waters. As you cruise along the coastline of Turkey, enjoy breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and pristine beaches as you sunbathe. On designated stops, when they drop anchor, jump off the boat and swim in secluded bays, explore underwater marine life, and cool off in the refreshing sea.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, is served onboard. Blue Cruises often stop at charming coastal villages and towns for passengers to explore local markets, interact with friendly residents, and experience the unique cultures of each destination. Many Blue Cruise routes also visit historical sites and ancient ruins. Evenings are about leisurely dinner under the stars, engaging in meaningful conversations, and perhaps experiencing traditional Turkish music and dancing.

How Much Do Blue Voyage Holidays in Turkey Cost?

The Blue Cruise price in Turkey varies widely depending on several factors, including vessel (gulet or yacht), cruise duration, group size, luxury, route and itinerary. Gulets are traditionally more affordable than luxury yachts. They are often chosen for more authentic experiences while in Turkey, while yachts offer more luxury.

The length of the cruise plays a significant role in determining the cost. Shorter cruises (e.g., 3-4 days) are generally less expensive than longer ones. Some gulets offer private cruises to charter the entire vessel for your group, while others offer shared cabins.

Luxury yachts with high-end amenities, spacious cabins, and top-notch services will be more expensive than standard gulets. The cost may cover different inclusions, such as meals, beverages, water sports activities, extra activities, entrance fees to historical sites, and crew gratuities. Be sure to clarify what is included in the price.

Lastly, peak tourist seasons (summer months) in Turkey have higher prices than shoulder or off-peak seasons. As a rough estimate, Turkish gulets start from around $500 to $1,500 per person for a few days. Luxury gulets or private yacht charters range from $1,000 to several thousand dollars per person daily. Also, remember single supplements may apply.

Cabin Charters on Blue Cruises for More Affordable Sailing

Cabin charters on Blue Voyage Cruises offer unique ways for individual travellers or small groups to experience the coastline, islands, and cultural sites in Turkey without having to charter an entire gulet or yacht. Instead of booking the whole vessel, book one or more cabins for flexibility of cruise duration and departure dates. Cruise operators in Turkey offer various cabin charter options, ranging from a few days to a week or more.

Each passenger has a cabin with shared or private facilities, depending on the cruise type and vessel category. Cabin sizes and amenities vary based on the vessel. Cabin charters typically include meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) prepared by an onboard chef. They are excellent for solo travellers, couples, or small groups in Turkey who want to experience Blue Voyage cruises while enjoying shared cruise conveniences and social aspects.

What are the Cabins like on a Blue Cruise Boat?

Cabins on Blue Voyage Cruises, whether traditional gulet or luxury yachts vary in size, layout, and amenities. However, we will add that we never sleep in the cabin on our blue voyage cruises and have always slept on deck.

Gulet Cabins: Gulets in Turkey offer more authentic experiences, and their cabins reflect this ambience. Cabins on standard gulets often have shared bathrooms (typically one or two) with simple furnishings, including bunk beds or twin beds, storage space, and essential lighting. Some gulets may have limited or no air conditioning, particularly in the standard category. Luxury gulets are more likely to offer air-conditioned cabins.

Luxury Gulet or Yacht Cabins: Luxury gulets and yachts in Turkey offer higher levels of private comfort. Cabins on luxury vessels often have en-suite bathrooms for added comfort, privacy and convenience. They are more spacious and well-designed, providing ample room to relax and unwind. Cabins may feature double beds, queen-size beds, or twin beds. Luxury cabins often feature elegant and tasteful décor, high-quality furnishings, and attention to detail. Air conditioning is also more likely to be available in luxury cabins.

The Difference Between a Yacht and a Gulet Cruise

Yachts and gulet boats are both vessels used for cruising and sailing in Turkey , but they have distinct characteristics that set them apart.

Modern Yachts in  Turkey:  Often feature sleek designs with streamlined hulls and advanced engineering for efficient cruising. They may have spacious cabins, en-suite bathrooms, and sophisticated interior designs. Yachts are known for their speed, particularly motor yachts. They reach higher speeds and are designed for efficient but fast navigation through the water. They include onboard facilities, like entertainment systems, water sports equipment, and spa facilities. They are well-suited for those seeking luxury, comfort, and personalised services.

Gulet Boats in Turkey: Gulets are traditional Turkish yachts with distinctive designs characterised by wooden construction, wide beams, and spacious decks. They often have two or three masts and are known for their elegant and classic appearance. Gulets typically offer comfortable cabins that emphasise rustic and traditional ambience. Gulet boats of Turkey are well-suited for relaxed sailing and exploring calm coastal waters rather than high-speed travel. They are more focused on providing an authentic and laid-back sailing experience in Turkey, emphasising enjoying the natural beauty and tranquillity of the surroundings.

What Food is Served on a Turkish Blue Cruise?

The cuisine on board reflects rich flavours and culinary traditions of Turkey. Meals served on board gulets or yachts during a sailing holiday often highlight the experience, providing a delightful blend of fresh ingredients, local dishes, and traditional flavours. The cuisine on board starts with a Turkish breakfast of eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, honey and bread. Lunch is numerous choices, from basic sandwiches to local Turkish dishes like stuffed grape leaves.

Evening meals are often a big spread with the main staples of chicken, beef or lamb. Expect to sample several Turkish mezes, known as appetisers. Seafood and fish will also be staples. On some Blue Cruises, there might be special events or themed meals, such as barbecues, seafood feasts, or traditional Turkish evenings featuring live music and dance. Snacks and Refreshments include fresh fruit, nuts, and local sweets. While all beverages, from tea to beer and soft drinks, are also served, but sometimes at an additional charge.

Meals served during Blue Voyage sailing holidays vary based on the cruise operator, region, and chef's expertise. Crew members often go to great lengths to provide dishes showcasing the best of Turkish cuisine. Vegetarians and anyone with food allergies should chat with the booking agent, who usually arranges separate menus.

Type of Cruises for Ideal Holidays on the Coast

Standard Gulet Cruises: These are traditional Blue Cruises on classic Turkish wooden sailing vessels called gulets. They provide shared cabins and basic amenities. These sailing holidays suit travellers seeking more budget-friendly options.

Luxury Boats in Turkey: For those looking for more comfort and luxury, a yacht rental offer upscale accommodations, spacious cabins with private facilities, gourmet dining, and additional amenities such as Jacuzzis, water sports equipment, and attentive crew service.

Private Boats in Turkey: Charter an entire wooden yacht for your group to customise the itinerary, activities, and experience according to your preferences. Private charters are great for families, groups, or special occasions.

Cruise and Stay: This option mixes sailing with overnight stays in coastal towns or cities of Turkey. Enjoy sailing and exploration on the sea, followed by hotel accommodation in charming villages or resorts to further explore the region's culture and attractions.

Cultural and Historical Cruises: Some Blue Cruises explore historical places, ancient sites, and cultural landmarks along the Turkish coastline. These cruises provide a deeper understanding of Turkey's rich history and heritage through the archaeological sites they visit.

Adventure and Theme Cruises: Adventure-oriented cruises may include hiking, kayaking, snorkelling, and exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations of Turkey. Some Blue Cruises have specific themes, such as wellness and relaxation, photography, gastronomy, or yoga.

Cruise Extensions: Extend your cruise with additional experiences, like hot air balloon rides over Cappadocia or visits to ancient cities like Ephesus. These extensions allow more exploration of Turkey's diverse attractions.

Island-Hopping Cruises: These cruises visit multiple islands, in Turkey and neighbouring Greece, for combined cultures and landscapes. Some well-known islands in the Dodecanese group include Rhodes (the largest and most famous), Kos, Kalymnos, Patmos, Symi, Leros, and Karpathos.

What is a Blue Cruise?

Blue Cruise, also known as Blue Voyage, describes the popular activity of sailing and cruising in a traditional Turkish Gullet along the Turkish Riviera. The gullets are large wooden sailing vessels comprising several cabins and a long open deck and are unique to the area of Bodrum and Marmaris.

The term blue in Blue Cruise is used very appropriately to describe the turquoise waters that you will experience on the journey. The Blue cruise commonly sets sail for 4-7 days, allowing you to explore more remote islands and discover the historical ruins that remain in the area.

It is the ideal way to kick back and enjoy the crystal clear waters, and at the same time experience the beauty that the Turkish Riviera has to offer .

Discover more beautiful parts of Turkey in this complete guide !

A typical Turkish gullet on a Blue Cruise in Turkey

Why is a Blue Cruise Special?

Blue Cruises are one of the best ways to explore the Turkish Riviera. Not only is it affordable, but it allows you to access many of the more remote sites and islands. On the 12 Islands cruise, you will explore many islands that would otherwise be impossible to reach. On the Bodrum to Fethiye cruise, you can also reach many historical ruins like Cleopatra’s Bath.

Your days are spent relaxing on the turquoise waters, going for a dip, eating, and some hiking. On these cruises, you will also get to enjoy some of the freshest food Turkey has to offer. Fish, caught the same day, are grilled and served with an assortment of salads and vegetables. After the meal, you can admire the sunset while sipping on a cup of Turkish coffee or tea.

Time stands still while on the blue cruise, and all worries melt away. For 4-7 days, the only thing you need to think about is what is the best way to relax: Sitting on the deck? Floating on a paddleboard? Hiking on the island?

The Best Time to Blue Cruise

The best time to do the Blue Cruise is during late spring, summer, or early autumn.

During late spring from May to June, the weather is more comfortable and not too hot, however, the water has not had the chance to fully warm up yet. For that reason, it can be a little chilly to swim, but very comfortable on deck.

In the summer from July to August, it is the peak season. The air temperature rises to 32C and the water will also feel quite warm. This is the busiest season and tends to be more expensive as well.

In Autumn, from September to early October, the water has had the entire summer to heat up so the water temperature is at its warmest. The weather is pleasant like in late spring, and the crowds have started to dissipate.

For that reason, September is often considered the ideal month to go Blue Cruising.

The deep blue waters of the Turkish Riviera

Where Are Blue Cruises Found in Turkey?

The main departure ports of Blue Cruises are Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Antalya .

The departure point will determine what type of Blue Cruise journey you will be taking. Some of the Blue cruises will do a point A to point B journey, whereas others will depart and return to Point A. For example, the 12 islands cruise leaves from Fethiye and returns 4 days later to Fethiye.

If you are curious about point A to point B cruises, there are some from Marmaris to Fethiye, or Fethiye to Gocek, or Antalya to Kekova.

When speaking to the local captains, they recommended a point A to point A cruise instead of a point A to point B cruise since in the latter, you will spend a lot of time at sea driving the vessel instead of enjoying the water.

We did the 12-island cruise leaving from Fethiye (point A to point A) and spent 90% of the day enjoying the water and the surrounding activities. Only about 30 minutes per day was spent driving the boat.

For all the top things to do in Fethiye, take a look at this guide .

Enjoying a hike on our Blue Cruise in Turkey

What to Expect Day to Day on The Blue Cruise

This section and the next will describe the 12 islands cruise since that is the one that we have the most experience with. We booked with My Blue Cruise but there many other providers .

When you wake up in the morning, breakfast is prepared for you and you enjoy it on the open deck of the vessel.

Next, you will have free time to enjoy the water. There is usually a paddleboard or kayak available, or you can simply lounge around and read a book on the vessel deck. After a few hours, you will get to enjoy a full lunch.

Normally after lunch, the boat will depart to change islands. The vessel will drive for around 30 minutes before anchoring down in a quiet cove. You will then have a chance for a quick dip before going on land to explore the island. Each island is different but there are usually some ancient ruins for you to discover.

After returning from the hike, you will be happy to go for another swim and maybe snorkel in the area to find fish.

Tired from the afternoon of activity, this is the perfect time to take a nap. Then comes dinner which is usually the biggest meal with fresh fish and meat. Finally, the evening is spent star gazing or getting an early night’s rest.

The subsequent days generally follow a similar schedule, however, each day you will get to enjoy a different cove and explore a new island.

Review of Our Experience on a Blue Cruise

We enjoyed the 4-day / 3-night, 12-island Blue Cruise leaving from Fethiye.

After spending 3 days in Istanbul , and 5 days in Cappadocia , this was the perfect way to relax and unwind. Our experience during those days was incredible. At first, I felt like 4 days of relaxing on a boat might be too long or boring, but in the end, it exceeded all our expectations.

Not only was the natural beauty of the islands and waters unmatched, but our experience onboard was equally amazing. The crew was so welcoming and spent time chatting with us, helping us with anything we needed, and even taught us their local dance.

No matter the time of day, they had the biggest smiles on their faces. All our needs were taken care of by the crew so that we could be completely worry-free.

Each of the meals was so delicious and felt like truly home-cooked meals. With the combination of swimming, hiking, napping, sun tanning, and eating, by the end of the 4 days, I felt like a new person.

If you are looking for a perfect way to unwind and explore the Turkish Riviera without any worries, this is definitely the best choice!

What is The Cost of a Blue Cruise?

The prices tend to range between 400USD-700USD, all-inclusive, depending on the length of the journey and the company.

Our 4-day / 3-night cruise cost around 500€‎ per person, however, this was on one of the more luxurious gullets. The cost will overall depend on the length of the journey, and also the capacity of the gullet.

Small gullets accommodate 6-10 passengers, medium gullets accommodate 10-20 passengers, and large gullets accommodate over 20 people.

Our Gullet fit a maximum of 12 people which we found was perfect and provided everyone with a lot of free space. Most other companies take on 15-20 guests.

7 days blue cruises tend to be closer to 700 USD.

How to Get to The Blue Cruises

How to get to your Blue Cruise will depend on the port of departure. There are many Blue Cruises that leave from Fethiye so the nearest airport would be Dalaman. From there, you can take a taxi for 1 hour to reach the town of Fethiye.

We arrived at Fethiye by driving from Kas, which is a very charming coastal town. Read more about all the things to do in Kas in this article.

Please verify your port of departure and from there you can easily determine the best airport .

Where to go After a Blue Cruise?

After the Blue Cruise, if it ends in Fethiye, you have several options.

You can explore the nearby town of Oludeniz and maybe try out the famed paragliding.

If you go further East, you can arrive at the charming coastal town of Kas or a little further brings you to the birthplace of Santa Claus, Demre .

Alternatively, if you want to explore a new culture, you can always take a ferry across to one of the islands of Greece (Rhodes).

By heading west, you can discover Marmaris, the beautiful town filled with canals, or the archeological site of Ephesus which is one of the best ancient sites in Turkey .

Finally, if you want to head back to the metropolis, then enjoy a couple of days exploring Istanbul or any of the other top Turkish cities .

Final Thoughts About Blue Cruise s

Blue Cruising is one of the best ways to unwind and enjoy the Turkish Riviera. There are no words to describe the feeling of freedom while you cruise along the turquoise waters, watching the sunset on the horizon while enjoying a delicious Turkish meal.

Although you can explore the coast by hopping from town to town along the Turkish Coast, there is truly something magical about spending several days floating on the Aegean Sea. Maybe it’s the gentle rocking of the waves, the blissful silence, or the sky full of stars, but all your worries just melt away.

So if you are contemplating doing a Blue Cruise, I would recommend it 100%.

Alanya is a seaside resort city and district of Antalya Province in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, 74.6 miles (120 km) from the city of Antalya. The municipal district, which includes the city center, has close to 400,000 inhabitants. The population is almost entirely of Anatolian origin, but is home to almost 10,000 European residents, with a growing presence in the city and its economy. Because of its natural strategic position on a small peninsula into the Mediterranean Sea below the Taurus Mountains, Alanya has been a local stronghold for many Mediterranean-based empires, including the Ptolemaic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. Alanyas greatest political importance came in the Middle Ages with the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum under the rule of Alaeddin Keykubad I, from whom the city derives its name. His building campaign resulted in many of the citys landmarks, such as the Kizil Kule (Red Tower), Tersane (Shipyard), and Alanya Castle. The relatively moderate Mediterranean climate, natural attractions, and historic heritage makes Alanya a popular destination for tourism, and responsible for nine percent of Turkeys tourism sector and thirty percent of foreign purchases of real estate in Turkey. Tourism has risen since 1958 to become the dominant industry in the city, resulting in a corresponding increase in city population. Warm-weather sporting events and cultural festivals take place annually in Alanya. Mayor Hasan Sipahioglu of the Motherland Party has led the city since 1999.

Sightseeing:

The city has changed hands many times over the centuries, and its name has reflected this. Alanya was known in Latin as Coracesium or in Greek as Korakesion from the Luwian Korakassa meaning "point/protruding city"

The Citadel of Alanya : the castle has a castle wall of 6.5 km length, 140 towers, about 400 cisterns, doors with inscriptions and as an open air museum reflects Seljuk art at its best, showing the fascination of Seljuk art.

A great promontory juts out into the sea dividing the beaches of Alanya into two neat parts. The Eastern beach and the Cleopatra beach are the precise places to laze around in luxurious sunshine enjoying the sea. The beaches are alive with vacationers holidaying all day long. Alanya also hosts the International Folklore Festival in August and you will find a general ambiance of merriment in those times. Going around Alanya is easy with widely available public buses and taxis.

Apart from the Alanya Museum which house representations from the various cultures of ancient Turkey, the Seljuk ruins are just 5 km away.

About 500m north of Ulus Meydani, it’s worth taking a look at the surprisingly well-preserved remains of the Roman baths (8.30am-12.30pm & 1.30-5.30pm Tue-Sun), dating back to the 3rd century.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The town and nice promenade are very walkable.

The harbor of Alanya is a jovial place with little boats and many restaurants. You can take boat trips to the famous Fosforlu Magarasi (Phosphorescent Cave), Apiklar Madarasi (Lovers' cave) and Korsanlar Madarasi (Pirates' Cave).

In town, a taxi is cheap, and the fares are regulated. They are easy to find. For long journeys, however, drivers can charge more than the meter reads. So negotiate the fare in advance.

Boat trips from Alanya Harbour range in duration from one hour to a full day. Most include visits to the nearby Pirates’ Cave, Lovers’ Cave and Phosphorus Cave .

Shopping and Food

The picturesque bazaar, which is closed to traffic and open until midnight is a paradise of handicraft shops. Potential souvenir purchases include leather and suede goods, hand-woven wool and silk rugs and carpets, gold and silver jewelry, semi-precious stones, meerschaum and onyx artifacts, mother-of-pearl inlaid wooden furniture, brassware, copperware, glassware, pottery, ceramics, embroidery, lace and beads.

Visitors can enjoy the cafes, bars, clubs, tavernas and discos in the harbor district, which makes up a very colorful and vibrant nightlife until dawn.

The restaurants on the waterfront promenade offer delicious traditional local dishes.

Traditional handicrafts such as carpets, copper goods, painted ceramics and jewelry are popular buys, along with a good selection of leather goods, sandals and beachwear which can be found in most of the larger resorts.

In souvenir shops and stalls, it's always worth trying a spot of haggling. For food shopping, local mini markets provide basic essentials, whilst the supermarkets found near the larger resorts are similar to those we are used to at home. Most resorts have a weekly market selling local produce, crafts and textiles and are well worth a visit.

Turkish food is amongst the best in the world. With enough climatic zones to grow most ingredients locally, there is a vast array of produce to excite and entice the palate. Besides its famous kebab dishes, there are many other traditional Turkish foods to choose from. Meze (appetizers) for which Turkey is justly famous, are a range of hundreds of small dishes from simple combinations such as cheese with melon to elaborately stuffed vegetables. These are served in all Turkish restaurants and are traditionally accompanied with Raki, a clear anise- flavored spirit claimed to be Turkey's national alcoholic drink

Turkey's currency is the Turkish Lira. Many shops and restaurants in the coastal resorts and big cities accept payment in euros and US dollars. But if you are planning to travel to other parts of the country, it is advisable to take some Turkish Lira.

Turkish Gulet (Yacht) Day Cruise

Last Updated on November 18, 2022

Every port town along Turkey's  Aegean  and  Mediterranean  coasts has a marina filled with  Turkish  gulet  yachts , some of which take visitors on  day cruises  along the coast or to nearby islands.

The day-long excursion cruise may include a visit to some ancient ruin or coastal village, a swim in a quiet cove, and lunch.

You usually weigh anchor around 09:00 am and return to port around 17:00 or 18:00 (5 or 6 pm). The  cost  is quite reasonable.

It's important to find a boat that will have  congenial passengers who enjoy the same sort of cruise that you do, and who speak your language .

Go to the port the evening before you'd like to cruise, look the boats over, and  talk to the captain  (who will probably be on the boat just for that purpose). Be sure to ask what sort of passengers he usually accepts:

—Young single people wanting to party?

—Retirees interested in archeology?

Also ask what  language  most of the other passengers may speak. If everybody else is speaking some language you don't know, it could get boring for you.

If  lunch  is included, you should ask about it in detail (some boats are happy to furnish menus). A day cruise for  TL 50 with a very basic spaghetti or sandwich lunch may not be as good a bargain as a  TL 60 cruise offering a great multi-course  Turkish feast .

You can easily find day excursion boats in all these ports:

For a longer cruise, with nights spent on the yacht, consider a  full charter  or  cabin charter .

We found a nice spot on the deck and relaxed while watching all these colours in the sky. The dinner was nice. I liked the fresh ingredients and the local flavours. Simple, but delicious!!! The whole experience was unbelievable. We felt the sea breeze and took many pictures. Best way to celebrate our anniversary and finish our holidays, and I recommend this even if you are not a couple.

Feds open preliminary investigation into Ford's hands-free driving tech BlueCruise

The nhtsa's office of defects investigation said it confirmed bluecruise was engaged right before impact during fatal crashes in texas and pennsylvania..

Federal safety regulators announced Monday they are investigating Ford’s hands-free driver assistance system , BlueCruise , on the heels of fatalities involving crashes with stationary vehicles in two states.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said it confirmed BlueCruise was engaged right before impact during two wrecks - one in Texas (February) and one in Pennsylvania (April).

The deaths mark the first fatalities involving the system, according to the NHTSA and both crashes took place during "nighttime lighting conditions."

'Critical safety gap': Gap between Tesla drivers, systems cited as NHTSA launches recall probe

What Ford model and year is being investigated?

The vehicles affected include 2021-2024 Ford Mustang Mach E models.

According to NHTSA, BlueCruise is only available on certain roads (pre-mapped highways) and uses "a camera-based driver monitoring system to determine driver attentiveness to the roadway."

It was introduced in 2021 and is currently available in Ford and Lincoln vehicles.

"The investigation will evaluate the system's performance on the dynamic driving task and driver monitoring," the NHTSA wrote in an action plan.

Announcement comes days after NHTSA closes Tesla autopilot investigation

The investigation comes three days after NHTSA ODI reported it was investigating the adequacy of  Tesla's December 2023 recall  of more than 2 million vehicles to update its autopilot features after nearly two dozen crashes involving Tesla vehicles with updated software.

After the software updates were deployed, "ODI identified concerns due to post-remedy crash events and results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles," the agency said in the filing.

In  documents filed on Friday , the agency said it had also closed a nearly three-year investigation analyzing 956 crashes involving Tesla vehicles through Aug. 30, 2023. Nearly half of the accidents (467) could have been avoidable, ODI said, but happened because "Tesla’s weak driver engagement system was not appropriate for Autopilot’s permissive operating capabilities."

Ford’s ‘BlueCruise’ Hands-Free Driving System Under Investigation After Fatal Crashes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Ford’s BlueCruise driver assistance system after two collisions killed three people, amid separate investigations into the fatal crashes.

An initial investigation confirmed the driver assistance was engaged prior to the collisions, a U.S. ... [+] agency said.

There were two separate cases of Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles colliding with stationary vehicles “during nighttime lighting conditions,” according to an April 25 notice , resulting in three fatality and two injury reports.

An initial investigation confirmed that the BlueCruise driver assistance system was engaged in the vehicles “immediately prior” to the collisions, according to the notice.

The agency will now evaluate more than 130,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles from model years 2021 to 2024 equipped with Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 , a driver assistance technology package equipped in some vehicles—which BlueCruise is a feature of—according to the notice.

Regulators will be evaluating the system’s “dynamic driving task” and driver monitoring capabilities, the NHTSA said.

Ford told Forbes it is “working with NHTSA to support its investigation.”

Key Background

Autopilot systems have been subject to increasing regulatory scrutiny in recent years, in particular Tesla’s. Ford’s BlueCruise system , which was launched in 2021, can only be engaged on certain roadways and monitors driver attentiveness using a “camera-based driver monitoring system,” according to the NHTSA, and Ford has said it is not fully autonomous . The NHTSA opened separate investigations into the Ford Mach-E crashes, which occurred on February 24 and March 3. The fatal February collision was the first known crash involving Ford’s driver assistance technology to receive attention from federal regulators, according to the Wall Street Journal .

The NHTSA announced a probe into Tesla’s handling of an Autopilot system-based recall on Friday. The agency is investigating whether the electric vehicle maker properly handled its December recall of more than 2 million vehicles to fix an error with its Autopilot system.

US opens investigation into Ford crashes involving Blue Cruise partially automated driving system

DETROIT (AP) — Two fatal crashes involving Ford’s Blue Cruise partially automated driving system have drawn the attention of U.S. auto safety regulators.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation of the crashes, both involving Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles on freeways in nighttime lighting conditions, the agency said in documents Monday.

The agency’s initial investigation of the crashes, which killed three people, determined that Blue Cruise was in use just before the collisions.

One of the crashes occurred in February in San Antonio, Texas , killing one person, while the other happened in Philadelphia in March in which two people died.

The agency says the investigation will evaluate how Blue Cruise performs driving tasks as well as its camera based driver monitoring system.

Ford said Monday it is working with NHTSA to support the investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which already is investigating the Feb. 24 San Antonio crash, determined in a preliminary report that it was operating on Blue Cruise.

The NTSB can only make recommendations, but NHTSA has the authority to take action including seeking recalls for safety issues.

This image provided by the Norwalk Police Department shows the scene of a tanker fire on I-95 in Norwalk, Conn., Thursday, May 2, 2024. Both sides of I-95, the East Coast's main north-south highway, were shut down — causing “horrendous” traffic jams — following the early morning crash involving a passenger car, a tractor-trailer and a tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 liters) of gasoline. (Norwalk Police Department via AP)

Ford says on its website that its driving systems do not replace human drivers, who have to be ready to take control at any time.

The Texas crash occurred on Interstate 10 in San Antonio. The NTSB report says the Mach E struck the rear of a 1999 Honda CR-V that was stopped in the middle of three lanes around 9:50 p.m. The 56-year-old driver of the CR-V was killed.

Another driver who was able to avoid the CR-V told investigators that neither its tail nor hazard lights were working at the time.

The NTSB said it intends to issue safety recommendations to prevent similar crashes. It has said it opened the probe due to continued interest in advanced driver assistance systems and how vehicle operators interact with the new technology.

The other crash involving a Mach E killed two people around 3:20 a.m. March 3 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia.

The Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday that a Mach E was in the left lane when it struck a stationary Hyundai Elantra that earlier had collided with a Toyota Prius.

The Mach E hit the Hyundai, pushing it into the rear of the Prius. During the crash, the driver of the Prius, who was outside of his vehicle, also was struck and thrown into the southbound lanes, the release said.

A police spokeswoman said a person from the Hyundai also was on the roadway and was hit. Both victims, males ages 21 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A police news release on the crash says a criminal investigation is underway and a charge of homicide by motor vehicle while driving under the influence is possible against the 23-year-old woman driving the Mach E.

Ford’s Blue Cruise system allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel while it handles steering, braking and acceleration on highways. The company says the system isn’t fully autonomous and it monitors drivers to make sure they pay attention to the road. It operates on 97% of controlled access highways in the U.S. and Canada, Ford says.

There are no fully autonomous vehicles for sale to the public in the U.S.

Both NHTSA and the NTSB have investigated multiple previous crashes involving partially automated driving systems.

Last week NHTSA began investigating whether Tesla’s fix for a December recall involving more than 2 million vehicles equipped with the company’s Autopilot automated system took care of the problem. The recall was done because the driver monitoring system was inadequate and posed a safety risk.

NHTSA said it ultimately found 467 crashes involving Autopilot resulting in 54 injuries and 14 deaths.
