About Bruny Island

Bruny Island, a 362-square-kilometre island located off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, is one of the most beautiful and pristine locations in Australia. Roughly 100 kilometres in length, the Island is tied together by a narrow strip of land called The Neck. Bruny Island is famous for beautifully preserved natural environments with world class beaches, national parks, stunning cliff top views and abundant wildlife matched with the finest local produce. Bruny Island Weather

Bruny Island Weather

For many people, the best time to visit Bruny Island are the driest, warmest months, September–February as your chances of seeing the penguins are higher. But Bruny Island is open all year round. This part of Tasmania you will find that January is the hottest month with an average temperature of 18°C (64°F) and the coldest is July at 8°C (46°F). The wettest month is March with an average of 50mm of rain. The Bruny Island weather can be ever changing so pack accordingly.

The autumn months of March, April and May is a season for wines, fresh Pacific oysters & the famous Fagus tree changing to glorious reds and yellows. If you want to see southern right and humpback whales, the best time to visit Bruny Island is when their migratory path passes the east coast in May, June and July, and back again in September, October and November. The winter months are still wonderful for hiking, with temperatures between June and August an average maximum of 12°C.

A Taste of Tasmania: A Bruny Island Food Tour

If you’re a person who seeks out the best of food culture when you travel, then there’s one must-visit gastronomic destination in Australia to visit – Bruny Island.

Nestled just off the southeastern coast of Tasmania , Bruny Island offers not just a palette of natural beauty, but a platter of epicurean delights, making it a truly exciting destination to go a Bruny Island food tour.

Comprising two isles adjoined by an iconic thin stretch of land called ‘The Neck’, Bruny Island is a short journey away from Tasmania’s capital, Hobart. In under an hour, you’re transported to a day trip escape popular for its pristine natural environments, unhurried lifestyle, and most importantly, its renowned gourmet produce.

Packed with independent producers, locals have leveraged the island’s natural resources to craft some of the country’s tastiest cheeses, chocolate, fruits, wine and much more.

The island’s seclusion has not only resulted in some seriously good food, it’s also provided a haven to many endangered and rare flora and fauna, meaning it’s a fantastic destination for nature enthusiasts too. The unspoilt landscape is great for birdwatching, spotting wildlife for penguins and seals and bush walking in the South Bruny National Park.

Simply put, Bruny island is all about incredible nature and great food. So even a small break from Hobart can offer a big taste of Bruny Island! Here’s my personal experience of taking a Bruny Island food tour as a day trip from Hobart.

How to get to Bruny Island

Sealink Bruny Island Ferry

From Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, it’s a quick and easy 35-minute drive to the Bruny Island Ferry Terminal, located in Kettering. From there, it’s a 15-20 minute ride on the ferry to access Bruny Island. During the summer, SeaLink operates approximately 20 departures a day.

SeaLink is equipped to transport vehicles up to 6 meters in length, and the best part – passengers ride absolutely free! Additionally, there’s no need book specific time slots, offering you a flexible and stress free experience to Bruny Island.

Remember, the last ferry service returning to the mainland is at 7:15pm though, so plan your day accordingly. You can book your open-ended ticket on the SeaLink ferry here .

For those without access to a vehicle, fear not! There are numerous organised gourmet day tours that can guide you on a culinary journey similar to the Bruny Island food experience I have outlined. These tours offer a stress-free way to explore and enjoy the gastronomic delights of Bruny Island.

If you opt for a tour, you’ll get picked up from your accommodation so you don’t need to worry about getting around.

Choosing a Bruny Island Food Tour Company:

There are loads of tour companies that can take you on a day trip to Bruny Island. They all have slightly different itineraries, depending on what you want to see and do, and cater to different budgets.

Budget tour : If you want to see Bruny Island’s highlights on the cheap, this day trip tour includes transportation, entry fees, and key highlights such as the Neck and Cape Bruny Lighthouse. You have a cheese tasting included and you’ll visit most of the local producers. However other tastings at these places (such as oysters, icecream, chocolate etc), and your lunch are at your own expense. From $145AUD pp .

Gourmet tasting tour : If you want to really dive deep into the food scene of Bruny Island, then you’ll want to do this seven course gourmet tasting tour , which includes oysters, award winning cheeses, local honey, mead and chocolates, as well as behind-the-scenes talks and visits to the islands famous landmarks. From $235AUD pp .

How to spend a day trip to Bruny Island:

shorelines on the beach with blue sea, sand and green vegetation

This itinerary for a foodie day out at Bruny Island is what I did with a tour company and covers the most iconic ‘outdoorsy’ things to do on the island first, in order to beat the crowds and work up an appetite for the day.

Trust me – there is a LOT to eat on a Bruny Island food tour so it’s worth being hungry for it! In fact, I skipped breakfast and didn’t regret it!

It’s also worth noting that a lot of the shops and food spots on Bruny Island close at 4pm or 4.30pm. So if you go independently, set that alarm for the crack of dawn – the earlier you can get on the ferry the better!

Admire the island from The Neck viewpoint

bruny island day trip

Once we touched down on solid land, we were whisked off to visit the island’s most iconic view – The Neck lookout.

From the carpark, a brief two minute ascent up 279 wooden steps offered an expansive view of the isthmus – the narrow ribbon of beach dotted with shrubs, which connects the two bodies of land.

Visiting this must-see landmark as our first port of call allowed us to admire the landscape and geography of Bruny Island before the day’s crowds gathered.

To the left, an aquamarine bay meets your gaze, trimmed with a lightly golden sandy beach and thick vegetation. To the right, a deeper and darker-hued sea with a more sparse beachfront, casting an illusion of one body of water being higher than the other.

Not just a visual treat, these verdant dunes also serve as a sanctuary for adorable local penguins. These industrious creatures return home at dusk, after a demanding day of fishing.

Having savoured the scenic panorama and snapped some pictures we walked down and to the left hand side to have a little stroll on the stunning pristine beach.

But don’t spend too long on the beach – there is still so much more to see (and most importantly, eat!) later.

Visit the iconic Cape Bruny Lighthouse

white lighthouse tower against blue sky and low green vegetation

To work up an appetite before tucking into some tasty treats, we headed to another scenic spot, the furthest point of the island, the southwest tip. Here you’ll find the inactive but very attractive heritage-listed Cape Bruny Lighthouse .

Surrounded by dramatic dolerite cliffs which look like individual stone columns compacted together, the wild coves and rock faces are quite literally Jurassic.

dolerite cliffs and green vegetation at cape bruny in Tasmania

When visiting between September – November and if luck is on your side, it’s possible to spot whales from this part of the coast, which is apparently quite a common encounter on Bruny Island! Sadly it wasn’t the right time of year for me to see any.

Regardless, this is simply a stunning spot to enjoy the raw beauty of the exposed coastline and perilously crashing sea.

You can also go inside the lighthouse on a tour if you arrange it in advance. For $20, you’ll be able to climb up to the top of the 114m tower via the cast iron spiral staircase, get some information on the history by a knowledgable guide and visit the lighthouse museum.

Taste Bruny Island grown and produced wine

row of vines in a vineyard in Tasmania

After visiting two of the most iconic landmarks on Bruny Island and having a walk around, it was time to seriously dig into some good food and drink (and not feel guilty about it).

The first thing we consumed on our Bruny Island food tour was a little tipple before lunch – a tasting at Bruny Island Premium Wines. It’s a small vineyard near sleepy Lunawarra and so booking beforehand is recommended .

Australia’s most southerly vineyard is a family run business which primarily grows cool climate loving Pinot and Chardonnay vines. The wine is great – in fact, the vineyard has won over 40 medals in national and international wine shows!

For non-wine drinkers (or maybe if you like all alcohol!) they also ferment (not brew) their own cider with champagne yeast, resulting in a refreshingly crisp cider with a unique twist.

They also have a small farm-to-fork restaurant serving delicious locally sourced produce. On the menu you can find things like Bruny beef burgers, lamb and wallaby burgers, grilled salmon and slow roasted lamb shoulder.

Try Fruits at the Bruny Island Berry farm

bruny island berry farm sign surrounded by flowers and blue bayin background between trees

At lunch make sure you don’t get dessert – instead head to Bruny Island Berry Farm for some ice cream topped with delicious homemade berry coulis.

The contrasting zing from the berries and the smooth cold creaminess of the local ice cream is a match made in heaven. We enjoyed some refreshing ice cream sat on one of the benches in the garden, with a view out towards the bay and hills poking out behind the trees.

Alternatively, for something a little lower in calories, some people opted for a punnet of seasonal berries from the counter. I tried the strawberries and they were pretty tasty.

Stock up on sweet treats

tray with pots of honey samples

Heading back towards the North part of Bruny Island and just before the isthmus, is a stop for anyone with a sweet tooth – Bruny I sland Chocolate Co .

This cute little roadside shack-come-shop produces chocolate and fudge made freshly on site. You can watch the chocolatiers working their magic in their open factory kitchen.

Not only are there a vast selection of chocolate box-style truffles and treats available from the counter to build your own custom box, there are shelves upon shelves of different flavoured chocolate bars and bags.

Of course you need to know what it’s like before you buy, so luckily there are plenty of samples on offer!

If you’re wanting to take a reminder of Bruny Island home with you, or have a gift to get someone, you can’t beat chocolate from the Bruny Island Chocolate Co!

Alternatively, just further down the road from the chocolate shop is the  Honey Pot producing 100% pure Tasmanian honey. The most iconic honey of the area is Tasmanian Leatherwood, known for its strong and distinct flavour.

Relax at Bruny Island Cheese and Beer Co

exterior view of the bruny cheese co building

This cosy and rustic shop with a large outdoor seating area is a welcoming place to sit down with a home brewed pint. Outside there are many picnic benches and crates to sit on and in the summer, plenty of picnic rugs.

If you have any space left after your lunch (and your dessert) then grab a cheese tasting platter to enjoy their home crafted highlights.

wheels of handmade cheese min

Alternatively, you can ogle at the wheels upon wheels of cheese through the large glass window inside and snag any samples on offer, or buy some cheese from their counter/shop to take home with you. Made with traditional techniques and from dairy produced on their farm, you’ll no doubt find something delicious, no matter what your preferences are.

Otto – a fresh cheese wrapped in prosciutto ham which you bake at home until it’s soft and gooey sounded amazing. A fresh crusty baguette and a balsamic dressed salad with this cheese would be a truly indulgent dinner!

The only cheese I was a bit unsure of was ‘Nannies Undies’ – a slightly quirky name for a semi-hard, herb-rubbed cheese!

Private tasting experiences at Bruny Island Cheese Co. are also available for $35 per person, where you’ll also get to learn about cheese making and brewing processes.

Grab seafood to go at ‘ Get Shucked’ Oyster Drive Thru

paper box of Bruny Island Oysters and a wedge of lemon

My favourite and our last stop on the whole gastronomic tour of Bruny Island had to be the super cool (and world first) oyster drive thru!

As we didn’t have time to enjoy the farm’s seafood with a glass of bubbles at their oyster bar (beware they close at 4.30pm!) we grabbed a box of oysters to go instead!

If you like oysters, then you should know that Tassie produces some of the creamiest and most sweet and juicy oysters in the country. They’re not fishy and slimy – rather fresh, salty and very moorish! I think it was the moment that made me really like them.

All I can say is Australia 100% needs more oyster drive-thrus!

Bruny Island looks like a beautiful place! The views look incredible and the lighthouse is adorable! I was sold as soon as I read ‘chocolate’ (vacation calories don’t count, right??) as I have a real sweet tooth! Thanks for the great guide!

This place looks flipping amazing! I’m really hoping that we manage to get across to Australia sooner rather than later! It’s always been on my bucket list to travel to 🙂

Bruny Island looks like SUCH a fab place for a holiday! I would love to visit to see the scenery, go hiking and see the animals, but it is really good to hear how great the food is too. Cheese, beer, chocs and sea food!? It’s like a list of the best reasons to travel. 😉

I’m currently in New Zealand and desperately hoping that I’ll be able to make it to Australia + Tasmania soon – hope they can open the bubble again! I’d never heard of Bruny Island Before – it looks gorgeous! And the beer and cheer making experience – yum! Def added to my list now 🙂

Oooh I’ve not heard of this spot! The berry famr sounds just fab, but the scenery is 100% the best. The viewpoint from the Neck is super cool, especially. It also sounds like this island has pretty much everything a traveler could want!

Ahhh Tasmania always looks amazing but it’s always nice to hear about a different side to it. Love the sound of these vineyards, it would be so fun. (Wouldn’t mind the sweet treats either!)

The flavours of Bruny are served up in some of Australia’s finest restaurants but taste best on the island. Freshly shucked oysters straight from the farmer’s hand, famed Bruny Island cheese and hand-crafted ales are served up alongside sweet honey and fresh roadside produce.

On the island, it’s all about handmade, hand caught and hand-crafted. Those hands work hard and you can often meet the makers, producers and proud growers. There’s even an old-school fridge packed with wood-fired bread from the Bruny Baker, complete with a cash slot, so bring your old meter money.

Dine in Australia’s southern-most vineyard or pick up a dozen oysters and head straight for a sandy beach. Follow a deliciously curated itinerary of foodie stops or hop on a tour and be delivered right to the door of Bruny’s best. It doesn’t matter how you tackle Bruny’s bounty, as long as you arrive hungry.

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, bruny island, tasmania: a full-day of gourmet food tasting.

I was sent on a road trip to explore Tasmania by Cheaptickets.sg  and Tourism Tasmania ( @tasmania ). In this post, you’ll find details on a day trip to Bruny Island, a holiday island 45 minutes south from Hobart .

While  planning the Tasmania trip , I started to look up day trips I can take from Hobart and the name Bruny Island kept popping up. Bruny Island is only a short 30-minute drive and then a 15-minute ferry rides away from Hobart. It is known for its wildlife and gourmet local produce. So when Laura (my friend from CheapTickets.sg) asked if I want to go for a food-tasting tour on the island, I did not hesitate to say yes!

The Bruny Island Traveller tour takes us on a culinary journey through the island – all in all, it was an amazing day of eating and sampling gourmet produce made locally on the island itself. The total cost of the tour might seem steep – but if you take a look at the list of food included, I think it quickly makes up for the cost.

Here’s what’s included in the tour:

  • Hotel / CBD Pick up and drop off
  • Transfer to Bruny Island (including Ferry transfer)
  • Tasting of 4 types of Cheese and 2 types of Beer
  • Half a dozen of freshly shucked Tasmania Oysters
  • Morning tea – Berries Jam, Clotted Cream, and scones with coffee
  • Wine tasting of 3 types of local wine
  • Lunch of our choice (Pork, Fish, Chicken, or vegetables)
  • Chocolate tasting
  • Honey tasting – we got to take home a small jar each!
  • Whiskey or Gin & Tonic drink

And without further ado, here are the details of the day:

The Bruny Island Experience

We woke up bright and early and made our way down to Penicott Wilderness HQ at the dock area in Hobart. Shortly after we arrived, a small shuttle bus (which fits about 20 people) drove over and its friendly driver checked us in. He was relieved to find us there as he wasn’t sure where to pick us up since we didn’t request a hotel pick-up. We got on the bus and it looks like everyone else was already picked up straight from their hotel!

Tip: Definitely have them pick you up from your hotel so you don’t have to walk to the HQ like we did.

Kettering Ferry Terminal

We then drove down to the Kettering Ferry which took about 30 minutes from Hobart. Kettering is the point where all vehicles board the ferry going into Bruny Island. We waited about 15 minutes before our shuttle bus made its way into the ferry, and off we went to Bruny Island! The ferry journey took about 15 minutes, just enough for us to check out the top deck and get some fresh air.

Bruny Island Ferry

Once we were on the island, we wasted no time getting to our first stop (out of 9).

Stop 1: Bruny Island Cheese Company

We kicked off the Cheese Tasting of 4 types of cheese. We tried Tom, Saint, George, and O.D.O (One Day Old). I loved Tom the most! As part of the tour, we received a 20% discount on all the cheese so I ended up buying two Toms – one to take home and one for a friend I was meeting up with in Melbourne, our next stop after Tasmania. Our driver informed us that there is a cooler on the bus we can use to store our cheese so that it doesn’t go bad.

Stop 2: Get Shucked Oyster Bar

The next stop is one of my favorites – we get to try half a dozen of freshly shucked Tasmanian oysters! I’ve always been partial to Tasmanian Oyster so this is the perfect snack for me.

To top it off, we happened to sit next to a couple who did not like oysters, so they offered us their leftovers after trying 1-2 oysters. I was in heaven!! The oysters were the freshest I’ve ever had AND I got to have more than expected.

Stop 3: The Neck

We continued the drive down south across “The Neck” which is a very narrow part of Bruny connecting the north and south islands. Yup, Bruny Island is actually formed by two large land masses, separated only by a narrow stretch of sand. It is so narrow it resembles a neck, hence the name.

If you happen to be in Bruny from September to February, you can also go for Fairy Penguin viewing here at night as they come back to feed the young.

We stopped here for about 15 minutes, just enough time to climb up the stairs to the very top of the hill to Truganini Lookout, where you can see the view of both the North and South parts of Bruny Island.

And yeah I was being cheeky with the choice of photo here 😛

Stop 4: Bruny Island Berry Farm

We had a morning tea at the Bruny Island Berry Farm. We had a choice of Berry Muffin or Scones with fresh berries jam and clotted cream. We also had a choice of drinks of tea or coffee. I chose the scones and flat white coffee.

After tea, we crossed over to the other side to enjoy the white beach of Adventure Bay.

Soft sand at Adventure Bay

Stop 5: Albino Wallaby!

This one is just a brief stop, but Bruny Island is also famous for housing the rare all-white albino wallabies. They are thriving on Bruny Island due to the lack of predators on the island – I’d imagine they don’t do very well in the wild. If you’re lucky, you might spot them around Adventure Bay – and we were lucky to see two that day! The other name for the white wallabies is “Painted Wallabies”

A very blurry picture of the white wallaby

Stop 6: Bruny Island Premium Wines

We stopped by the winery for lunch. We had a series of wine-tasting of wines made from grapes harvested right from the vineyard and made at the venue. We tried a 2013 Gewurztraminer (White wine), a 2016 Pinot Noir (Red wine), and a house cider.

Grilled tasmanian Salmon with Pinot Noir

The tasting was promptly followed by lunch and wine of our choice – I chose the Tasmanian salmon and a Pinot Grigio wine. Yeah, I know white wine is supposed to be a better pairing for fish but I felt like having red that day 😛

Stop 7: Bruny Island Chocolate Company

I’m already full by now, but I had to make space for this next stop – Bruny Chocolate Company for chocolate tasting. I love the adorable toy house look of this chocolate shop!

Bruny Island Chocolate Company

We tried a bunch of chocolates – some with fruit fillings, some with coffee bean fillings. I took home some of the coffee bean chocolates and hot chocolates for our friends back home.

Stop 8: Bruny Island Honey Pot

Next, we visited the honey shack for some locally-made honey. We tried 8 different kinds of honey and 2 types of mustard, and were allowed to take home a small jar per person for free! We took back some Leatherwood and Pure Tasmanian Honey.

Stop 9: Tasmanian House of Whisky

The last stop is the whiskey shop. It would be natural to taste their whiskey, but I chose G&T instead – and boy am I glad I did! The G&T ended up being the star of the trip for me (followed closely by the oysters, because I LOVE oysters). This magical gin right here is called Seclusion. It is Bruny Island’s first gin release, distilled on the Tasman Peninsula.

Seclusion Gin by Bruny Island House of Whisky

So why is it so magical? In the bottle, it is originally a deep bright blue color but once you pour tonic water on it, it turns into this beautiful gradient of pale purple/pink color! It turns out that this change in color is from coloring made from the Butterfly pea flower, which reacts with citrus to change color. I’ve been seeing a lot of butterfly peas in food and drinks lately – I think they are going to be the next big thing! I couldn’t help but take a small bottle home for myself. 😍

How the gin looked like before tonic gets poured in

And this last stop wrapped up our trip to Bruny Island. We left the island the same way we came in – via the Ferry. We were back in Hobart by 5PM, as promised on the itinerary.

Is the Bruny Island Traveller tour worth it?

The Bruny Island Traveller tour  costs AU$ 235/person, and I personally think it’s worth it.

As I mentioned above, the list of food, transport, and activities included with this tour makes up for the cost. If you are driving on your own, the ferry transfer into Bruny by itself would cost you $33 and up per vehicle. You’d also have to factor in the cost of car rental (about $70/day) and the cost of fuel to get there. On top of that, you’d have to pay the costs of food on your own, and in my experience meals in Australia are not very cheap – on average we spent about $15-20 for breakfast (with coffee) and $35-40 for lunch (with a glass of wine).

So if you love eating and want a taste of everything I mentioned above, I highly recommend going on the tour – it saves you both time and money.

However, if you’re just going for the sights and not so much the food, I recommend driving yourself and perhaps taking the Bruny Island cruise instead (AU$135/person). PS: I took the Tasman Cruise with them and loved it!
