Capri walking itinerary: breathtaking Faraglioni and Natural Arch

A great capri walking itinerary to discover capri’s stunning natural spots: the giardini di augusto, the faraglioni and the natural arch, including a map.

I designed this half day Capri walking itinerary to let you discover the arguably most famous and stunning Capri sights: the Giardini di Augusto, The Faraglioni and the arco naturale. You can complete it with a boat tour of the island, including a visit to famous Grotta Azzurra.

Capri, one of the highlights of any Amalfi Coast tour,  is synonymous with stars, style and impossible glamour. However, away from the central Piazzetta, it’s also a place of stunning natural beauty and calm.

I suggest to walk this path early in the morning, when Giardini di Augusto and Punta Tragara are less crowded. The tour takes no more than three or four hours, but you can extend it to the whole day if you decide to spend some time to sunbath and swim at the Faraglioni, where you can rent a sunbed at “da Luigi”.

Just a warning: the walk to Punta Tragara is flat and easy, but from there to Faraglioni and Arco Naturale you will  have to climb many stairs and deep rises! It’s actually easier to start the path from the Natural Arch, but the tour is less scenic (in my opinion). Said so, I walked up this path with my 10 years son, and he survived, quite happily, indeed!.

Here is what my Capri walking itinerary in half day looks like. Click on the map to access the Google Map:

1) Piazza Umberto 1° – the famous “Piazzetta”

Capri walking itinerary - Capri Piazzetta

This is the starting point of your half day Capri walking Itinerary. To get some strength, you could indulge in a delicious sfogliatella – but mind the prices, this is one of the most expensive spots of the island!

2) Walking to the Giardino di Adriano

Capri walking itinerary - Capri hotel Quisisana

A very nice and peaceful walk, at least if you do it before 9:30 PM or at sunset, without the thousand of day trippers!

3) The Giardini di Augusto and the Via Krupp

4) Via Tragara and the Faraglioni

From giardini di augusto walk up to the Quisisana hotel, and turn right in via Tragara, to get to the Punta Tragara Viewpoint.

From here you start the less crowded part of my Capri walking itinerary.

From Punta Tragara view Point you can go down to the sea level, along a delightful path under the maritime pines.

5) The path to the natural arch

At the end of the tour, look for the restaurant “Lo Sfizio”  : it’s a small place which caters local people. Food is excellent, and prices are much lower than what you may be asked around the Piazzetta. You must try the “Scialatielli ai frutti di mare”, a local hand made pasta with sea food: amazingly good!

Dear Jean-Pierre,

Can you please tell me the cost of this tour?

Kind regards,

Hi Shannon, the cost of this tour is actually… nothing! I did it on myself, and i think that anybody could do the same just with a map, the path is very well indicated. Local guides are available, but I didn’t check the cost. I personally did it during a 2 days tour to Capri with my son, coming from Naples by hydrofoil, and continuing to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast (I rented a car in Sorrento). Feel free to drop me a note should you wish to have more info.

What is the distance? I just completed it today and it was wonderful but I’d like to know how far it actually is

Hi Nellie, I’m so glad you enjoyed this amazing walk. Actually I don’t know the exact distance (and wasn’t able to find it on the web). My personal estimation is no more than 2 KM from the natural arch to the Punta Tragara viewpoint, something around 3 Km if you consider the complete round trip from the Piazzetta.

Walking on Capri for the leisure and serious walker

Practical information for walkers visiting capri, both short leisure strolls and serious treks.

Walking the Coastal Path, Capri

Walking on Capri

The rugged and scenic landscapes of Capri offer something of interest around every corner and offers worthwhile walks both for the leisure visitor who wants a short scenic stroll away from the crowds or the serious hiker.

Capri is only 7km long and 3km across at its widest so nothing is too challenging, only the significant steep climbs and drops of many trails will put off the leisure visitor with a pair of sandals - though we have a recommended walk for those too.

There is a network of trails of which you can find more details from the various tourist offices on Capri and the occasional sign.

Public transport on Capri comes in the form of mini-buses running frequently all over the limited road network and will get you with no hassle to a good starting point of any walk on the island.

Walks for mainstream leisure visitor

Sign for path Capri Town to Marina Grande Capri

Marina Grande - Capri Town

Capri Town is the main town on Capri where most day visitors end up and is situated 150m above the arrival point of all the ferries on Capri at Marina Grande.

There is a funicular railway that connects the two and certainly going up this for most leisure visitors is the transport of choice. But the queues for the railway can be lengthy and the walking option for the fit going up only takes 20 minutes, though it's a relentless climb.

On the way down, walking is recommended - if you have spent all your time in Capri Town sampling the boutiques and sophistication there, the walk will give you a pleasant taster of the "real Capri".

Marina Grande to Capri Town directions

Find the entrance to the funicular railway on the quayside and with your backs to the sea, turn left following the quayside for about another 100m to a small square.

Turn right here up a road for just 50m or so before taking a left turn along Via Truglio. It's now a relentless paved climb up a walkway to Capri Town where you come out in the centre of town by the funicular railway.

Capri Town to Marina Grande directions

This is simplicity itself, just find the steps leading down around the funicular station building and just keep descending until you spill out on the quayside at Marina Grande.

Top of the page

Capri town - arco naturale + optional coastal path.

Path from Anacapri to Marina Grande, Capri

This is the classic mid or late afternoon walk after you have sampled the delights of Capri Town and would like to stretch your legs and sample what Capri has to offer outside the town.

It's very worthwhile and well within the capabilities of most and is along paved paths.

You'll wind your way through narrow alleys/lanes to escape Capri Town, gain glimpses into expensive villas before arriving at Arco Naturale, a natural cliff arch. It's under an hour there and back and there are refreshment opportunities along the way.

You can extend the walk by taking the coastal path alternative (signposted) back to Capri Town which is slightly more challenging, but again easy for most. The long stairway descent along the coastal path precludes pushchairs.

Both options are very popular and you will be joining a steady stream of people doing the same walk as you.

Capri Town to Arco Naturale directions

From the funicular station at Capri Town, with your back to the views out to sea and Marina Grande below go around the tower in front of you into a small square.

On the far left side of the square you will see a small arch offering an exit from the square and onto a narrow lane/pathway called Via Longano. After 100m bend right into Via Sopramonte which you follow for about 400m to a crossroads of paths.

Go straight ahead here and just keep going until you arrive at the Arco Naturale (there are occasional signs from the crossroads onwards).

Arco Naturale to Capri Town directions

If you want to take the coastal path route back to Capri (allow 75min) you will notice steep steps going down to your right just before you arrive at Arco Naturale. This is the start of the coastal path, the route is obvious.

The initial descent is steep and lengthy but on well constructed concrete steps. After the descent the path rollercoasts with no steep ascents or descents along the cliff side until you reach Capri Town.

Walks for the serious walker in Capri

If the main reason to come to Capri is for a walk then you will probably want to invest in a map or a guidebook.

There are official walking routes, paths and maps which should be available at the tourist offices, but perhaps it's another thing if you walk out from the tourist office with any worthwhile reference material.

Giovanni Visetti - hiker & map maker

Giovanni Visetti produces all the walking maps that the official walking maps available over on the Sorrento peninsular are based on.

He also produces a walking map for Capri. You can view/print from his website (link below).

If you are looking for a guide, there are many offering their services, but we would suggest you might want to support all to rare guys like this who put quality walking information like this in the public domain for free.

Giovanni Visetti - official website

Sunflower Books: Sorrento, Amalfi Coast & Capri: Car Tours and Walks

Perhaps the most popular walk book in English for the Sorrento area is by Sunflower books who publish a range of titles covering many of the popular European holiday destinations where walking is a popular diversion.

The Sorrento book also covers the Isle of Capri with a map and walking notes for the most popular hiking routes around the island.

Unlike all the other titles of the Sunflower range that have discreet separate walks, the Sorrento book is different. Because of the interconnecting nature of all the trails on the Sorrento peninsular each segment is a mini-walk in itself.

The intent is that you put together several of these segments for your own bespoke walks.

Another differentiating factor of the Sorrento Sunflower book is that there are different write-ups and timings for each direction of each segment. Timings can be very different on some of the walks with huge altitude changes.

The easiest and cheapest way to get your hands on a copy of the Sunflower book is online through Amazon, link below.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Itinerary for Amalfi Coast and Capri Walking

Arrival in sorrento.

You’ll arrive in Sorrento to the fresh ocean air, which will be most welcome after your travels. Pop into the historic town centre to window shop, find a restaurant to enjoy dinner at, and get excited for the days ahead.

Capri Day Trip

The first adventure in your walking tour of the Amalfi Coast takes you by ferry to Capri Island, the “pearl of the Bay of Naples.” You can choose between two walks around the island. The first walk on Capri is an easy trip to Emperor Tiber’s villa, where the ruler was said to have thrown his rivals off the cliff (lovely!). The gardens are luxurious and the views over the Gulf of Naples are fantastic. The second option for a walk today is perfect for those wanting to admire views of Monte Solaro and Punta Carena, as you’ll walk from Anacapri up Monte Solaro, where you can enjoy a cable car ride past picture-worthy views. Then, you can descend down to Punta Carena, where you can optionally continue to the Blue Grotto on one of the most beautiful trails on the island. Tough choices today!

Walk & Swim at Marina del Cantone

Today, start with a private transfer to Sant’Agata, where you’ll walk to the stunning beach of Marina del Cantone. A little break for a swim and some sun is only natural here, but once you’re done enjoying the bay it’s off to enjoy a walk with views of Capri, the Amalfi Coast, the Gulf of Naples, and Mount Vesuvius.

To complete today’s walk, you can either walk from Termini to Marina del Cantone, walk from Sant'Agata to Marina del Cantone, or forgo the transfers altogether to walk from Sorrento to Marina del Cantone depending on how far you wish to go on foot.

Baia di Ieranto Loop

Begin the next leg of your walking adventure on the Amalfi Coast with a trip to the Bay of Ieranto, which has excellent views. Give the legs a break with a float in the Mediterranean or take a nap on the beach- today is a shorter journey to give you more time to relax.

Sant’Agata to Colli San Pietroand and Amalfi

Today begins with a private transfer to Sant’Agata dui Due Golfi, where you’ll start your walk to Colli San Pietro, perched high above the coastline. The walk is sublime, and you’ll traverse through terraced fields, lemon groves, and olive trees. The air is scented with wildflowers, and you probably won’t want the day to end! A private transfer in the evening takes you to Amalfi for the next few days. Perhaps some local Limoncello before bed?

Path of the Gods

Today you’ll take on one of the most famous trails along the Amalfi Coast, the Sentiero degli Dei trail, better known as “Path of the Gods”. Expansive ocean views and jagged coastline make this walk unforgettable! Spot the colourful buildings of Positano as you approach and take some time to enjoy this pastel city before the bus back to Amalfi comes.

Amalfi loops

The last adventure of your Amalfi Coast walking tour takes place in the Valle delle Ferriere. Here, you can choose between two walks. The first walk leads you to Pontone-Pogerola-Amalfi. It is shorter but more demanging walk via Madonna dei Fuondi Santuary. The trail follows inland paths through Valle delle Ferriere Park, passing by ancient mills and rivers with hidden views of the villages below.  The second option is a longer loop which will satisfy the demanding walker with its spectacular views of the bay of Salerno and the high cliffs of the Amalfi coast.

Departure from Amalfi

Enjoy your last breakfast in Amalfi before it’s time to leave this incredible place. Safe travels!
