You can’t put Carrie Underwood in a box

After a remarkably versatile show in salt lake city thursday night, it would be a disservice to say underwood is solely a country artist.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

After floating over the crowd on a pink floral swing, Carrie Underwood gently landed on a small platform, picked up a guitar and began to sing “ Two Black Cadillacs ,” a dark ballad about two women who exact murderous revenge on a cheating man.

Following that ominous number, Underwood seamlessly transitioned to a vastly different theme — her Savior. The singer gave her congregation of 20,000 a sermon about the importance of being nice to one another and lifting each other up. She then sang one of her earliest hits, the soul-searching “Jesus Take the Wheel,” before performing a soul-stirring chorus of “How Great Thou Art.”

Seven songs later, Underwood was donning a black leather Guns N’ Roses jacket and channeling her inner Axl Rose with a cover of “Welcome to the Jungle.”

She has 25 CMT Awards , 16 Academy of Country Music awards and nine Country Music Association awards — not to mention eight Grammys — but after a remarkably versatile show in Salt Lake City Thursday night, it would be a disservice to say Underwood is solely a country artist.

She’s so much more.

The shocking versatility of Carrie Underwood

Throughout her nearly two-hour set, Underwood’s music had hints of country, gospel, pop, soul, jazz, blues and hard rock. One song would mimic Dolly Parton’s soft, lilting style, and the next would elicit a rasp that would’ve been right at home with Axl and his cronies. One minute the arena felt like a small chapel and the next it was a full on rock show, complete with Underwood pounding out an unexpected drum solo.

It’s a conglomeration of her many influences. Underwood, an Oklahoma native, grew up on gospel and country, but she recently told Rolling Stone she’s always been “mesmerized” by Rose’s vocal style and has spent a lot of time trying to emulate it. Earlier this year, she even convinced Rose to join her at the Stagecoach Festival. A few months later, Guns N’ Roses reciprocated and invited Underwood onstage for a show in London.

It’s a shocking versatility, and Underwood doesn’t hold back. In Salt Lake City, she rose from beneath the stage and hit the ground running. She threw her body and soul into each song — from the first note of her opening number, “Good Girl,” to the middle of her set with the emotional “Cry Pretty,” which earned her a standing ovation before she even hit the last note, to the final chord of her closer, “Before He Cheats.”

With a voice like that, you don’t need much else to entertain a crowd.

But Underwood’s voice is just one part of the equation.

More than a voice

Underwood’s live show is a spectacle — a glittery surface that belies the gritty nature of many of her songs.

In a similar vein to Kiss, the singer channels her hard rock side with pink streamers, fire, sparks and elaborate aerial contraptions to move her across the arena. Her several outfit changes — from a sparkly ensemble to a traditional Western getup to a leather jacket — mirror the fact that she is no one-trick pony.

To make a long story short: You can’t put Carrie Underwood in a box.

She puts on a staggering production, and you can’t help but marvel at how she does this night after night. It’s as physically demanding as it is vocally, and she doesn’t give herself much time to rest — anytime she leaves the stage is for an outfit change.

Carrie Underwood performs on her “Denim and Rhinestones” tour.

But there is a little give and take with this kind of production. Underwood provides a stunning visual component that is impossible to glean from an album. But the intensity of her show means the nuances of her music — like the storytelling quality and dynamics that are so exposed on her recordings — get a little lost. For the most part, Underwood performed at the same volume for two hours. It’s an impressive volume, though, and at times it was still hard to hear her, so she needed to be loud.

The set list appears to be largely the same from show to show. Arena shows are generally well-oiled machines, and considering all of the intricacies of Underwood’s production — including specific projections that go with each song — it would be hard to substantially deviate. But the singer still manages to create unique moments with her fans, like opening an envelope and revealing to a couple in the audience that they would be having a baby girl (she encouraged them to name that girl Carrie).

A proposal for Carrie Underwood

When recently describing her newest album, “Denim and Rhinestones,” the singer said in a statement : “You have these things that are great on their own and then you put them together and they just fit.”

The same can be said for Underwood’s live shows. The way she performs, you may find yourself wondering why “Welcome to the Jungle” and “How Great Thou Art” aren’t paired together more often.

In the last four years, Underwood has released two country-pop albums, Christmas music and a gospel record. When her “Denim and Rhinestones” tour wraps up, Underwood should hurry to the studio to record a rock album.

Based on her reception in Salt Lake City, it might just work.

Whether singing barefoot while straddling an orb-shaped contraption ferrying her high above the crowd, holding notes for lengthy periods without veering off key, delivering witty narratives as she sipped red wine or wielding microphone stands as potential weapons, Underwood showcased incredible versatility and oozed charisma. She also knew how to have fun. From the instant streamers rained from the rafters amid the opening song “Good Girl” to the moment pyrotechnic blasts acted as sharp daggers on the closing “Before He Cheats,” the superstar paused only to change costumes.

Underwood’s breathless energy shouldn’t be news to anyone keeping tabs on her. The Oklahoma native has maintained a whirlwind pace since winning “American Idol” in 2005. Unlike the show many viewers once considered appointment television, the vocalist has remained a constant mainstream presence. During the past five years, she released four albums, including a gospel collection, a Christmas LP and the recent “Denim & Rhinestones.” She also penned a bestselling lifestyle-and-fitness book (“Find Your Path”), launched an exercise app and completed the second part of a Las Vegas residency this past spring.

Those accomplishments add to a resume that includes eight Grammy Awards, 16 ACM Awards, 23 CMT Music Awards and 17 American Music Awards. Underwood reigns as the most-followed female country artist on several social media platforms and continued her decade-long involvement with the opening of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC last month. She’s also prolonging another long-standing practice, philanthropy, by donating money from each ticket sold on her current “Denim & Rhinestones” tour to the nonprofit Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Yet for all the tradition that still informs Underwood’s career, nothing at present seems more impactful than her having invited Guns N’ Roses vocalist Axl Rose to perform two songs with her at the Stagecoach Festival this past April — and calling it “the greatest night of my life.” Rose and his band returned the favor in July at two concerts in London. On Saturday, Underwood seemingly projected those experiences onto a broader canvas.

Performing with joyful swagger and unflappable confidence, Underwood remained in full-on rock star mode throughout the 115-minute set. She and her eight-piece band hinted at the mood before the curtain even dropped by blaring Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” over the PA system as the lead-in to their spectacle. If that message wasn’t clear or loud enough, the Grand Ole Opry member later took a surprise turn behind the drum kit and, hair and arms flailing, pounded out a solo that would’ve made Dave Grohl smile.

Indeed, Underwood could’ve easily been describing herself when she sang, “‘Cause when she walks in / Poor everybody else.” She owned the main stage — as well as a small area at the opposite end of the venue and the air separating the two spaces. A combination of three hydraulic lifts, two aerial devices and a pair of ramps complemented a multi-tier platform that stretched to the middle of the arena. Three video screens ensured everyone enjoyed close-up views of Underwood’s glamorous outfits. Her singing needed no such technological assistance.

Replete with stamina, control, purity and depth, Underwood sang with hurricane-strength force and avoided the exaggeration that plagues many pop divas. Though many of the glittery visuals and glossy arrangements suggested sweetness, her authoritative tones indicated otherwise. Underwood’s songs frequently featured female protagonists taking charge of their lives (“Undo It”), reclaiming their identity (“Ghost Story”) and/or emerging from toxic situations (“Church Bells”). Her vocals — assertive, dramatic, determined, a balance of fierce intensity and graceful power — gave them toughness, pride and courage.

Singing in an understated manner that conveyed relief more than anger, she put a clever twist on the conventional country trope of cheating on “She Don’t Know.” Electric guitar in hand, the vocalist approached the same theme with noir-like secrecy and gritty menace on “Two Black Cadillacs.”

Not everything in Underwood’s universe involved victims or broken hearts. Anchored by a keytar and synth-pop melody, the summery “Denim & Rhinestones” found her dancing and duetting with opener Jimmie Allen. On several faith-themed excursions, Underwood sang with unblemished sincerity. In segueing from “Jesus, Take the Wheel” into a brief interpretation of the spiritual “How Great Thou Art,” she channeled her church roots and hit gospel peaks.

Her range and magnetism extended to her movements. With her band following her every step, Underwood strutted, shuffled, kicked, stomped and sashayed. At a few junctures, she headbanged. The singer’s left arm often spoke a language of its own, and when needed, she crouched into a compact stance to allow herself more lung capacity to project over the din of fiddles, banjos, slide guitars, keyboards and percussion. Underwood’s only glaring misstep? Piping in a pre-recorded video of Jason Aldean for a duet of “If I Didn’t Love You.” It reeked of artifice.

By contrast, Underwood’s embrace of hard rock sounded utterly convincing. Bringing it full circle, she emerged toward the end of the concert in a black Guns N’ Roses jacket and belted out a searing rendition of the group’s “Welcome to the Jungle” complete with hip-and-leg swaying that aped the moves of Rose’s signature glide. Though Underwood’s sass on many tunes implied the sentiment, here, she openly declared it: She is not to be crossed. And how.

Memo to Underwood: Go the distance and get in a studio to make a warts-and-all rock album, be it covers or originals. If you record it, they will come.

Carrie Underwood – ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ review

Emma Jordan

Eight-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood celebrates seventeen years in the music industry this year, and is still having so much fun, going by the release of her ninth studio album, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’.

The 12 tracks, about love and heartbreak and the other woman, are mostly upbeat, fun songs, which was Carrie’s intention, as artists return to the stage. To paraphrase the title song from her double platinum 2012 album, the CMA Fest 2022 audience was blown away during her blisteringly entertaining Saturday headline set.

The album opens with the title track, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’, a pop-infused nostalgic love song, reminiscent of the eighties decade and Underwood’s third album, Play On.  â€˜Velvet Heartbreak’ follows a similar musical vein, in the direction of, well, heartbreak.  Underwood has already performed third track, the enigmatic ballad and lead single ‘Ghost Story’, live a couple of times, this year at the 2022 Grammy Awards and the 2022 CMT Music Awards, ahead of the album release, and it’s one of the strongest songs on Demin & Rhinestones, because of the hook of a chorus and the intriguing love story.

Other standout songs on the album are the is the home-based ballad ‘Burn’, the warning-song of ‘Poor Everybody Else’ and ‘Wanted Woman’, for the western-reference title and the upbeat electronic dance direction. This juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, weaves through the whole concept album – of having a good time and taking care of the business of the heart – and doesn’t quite reach the magnitude of ‘Blown Away’, the RIAA Platinum ‘Storyteller’, or 2018’s ‘Cry Pretty’ albums.

But, you know, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ isn’t taking itself seriously; sometimes we just need to shake off a bad relationship, grab our pals and head out for a good time; ‘Crazy Angels’ and ‘Pink Champagne’ make decent pop-country companions.

Perhaps acknowledging the previous, faith-based albums, that Underwood released in the last couple of years, is the gentle album closer ‘Garden’.

Carrie Underwood is an outstanding performer, an icon of country music and her vocals were made for arenas . On release day, ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ shot to the top of the charts, and legions of fans will have already learned these lyrics, ahead of the 43 date tour when it kicks off in October.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | concert review: carrie underwood embraces her inner axl rose at wild target center show.

Carrie Underwood, wearing shorts with fringe, a tank top and tall boots, sings into a microphone on stage.

If that sounds like a trite observation, well, usually I’d agree with you. While the 39-year-old “American Idol” champ has always leaned heavily into pop and rock for her energetic, big-production shows , Underwood truly embraced her inner rock star Tuesday.

That’s not just because she offered an enthusiastic take on Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” near the end of the show. (In April, she invited Axl Rose to join her onstage at the Stagecoach festival for a pair of GNR classics and called it “the greatest night of my life.”) She injected rock energy at every turn, starting with Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades,” which blasted over the loudspeakers before she began her set.

She opened with a supercharged “Good Girl” followed by a rafters-rattling “Church Bells” and a massive “Undo It,” which ended with an audience singalong. And from there, she kept the pace brisk — yet still worked in multiple outfit changes — and the songs booming, whether they were her many chart toppers or lesser-known tracks from her ninth album “Denim and Rhinestones,” which she released back in June.

Before “She Don’t Know,” she emerged from a trap door in the stage clutching a glass of red wine and telling the crowd “in case you didn’t know, you are at a country music concert … we are so country up here, we’ve got two fiddlers.” During “Blown Away,” her strong, pure vocals cut through a whole lot of stage production. (Prior to her current tour, she played an extended residency in Las Vegas and clearly picked up a few new tips for razzle and dazzle in the process.)

“Cry Pretty” felt like an overblown GNR power ballad that wrapped with pyro. Underwood followed that by riding a trapeze swing that drifted over the heads of the general admission crowd on the floor and landed at a satellite stage on the other side of the arena. She strapped on a guitar and ran through “Two Black Cadillacs,” “Garden” and one of her signature songs, “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”

In order to get back to the main stage, Underwood climbed into a floating gyroscope-style metal globe with pink and blue neon wings and crooned “Crazy Angels.” Then she invited her opening act Jimmie Allen to join her for the title track of her new album, a relatively rare (for her, anyway) midtempo jam.

If all of that wasn’t enough, during “Poor Everybody Else,” she parked herself behind a drum kit and banged away. Never stop rocking, Carrie.

Carrie Underwood Packs in the Hits on Opening Night of Her ‘Denim & Rhinestones’ Tour

Carrie Underwood unleashed her highly-anticipated Denim & Rhinestones Tour on Saturday night (Oct. 15) with a sold-out show in Greenville, S.C., delivering a nearly two-hour set list of her hits, new and old.

Following an opening set from Jimmie Allen , Underwood took the stage for a performance that pushed the envelope both visually and in the live interpretation of her stalwart -- and growing -- catalog of hits. Her 2022 Denim & Rhinestones album was well represented in the set list, including performances of "Garden," "Burn," "Crazy Angels," "She Don't Know," "Poor Everybody Else" and her new single, "Hate My Heart."

With a show that went back and forth from the main stage to the B stage, Underwood's appearance onstage included plenty of costume changes -- including, as fans might expect from her album and tour name, a dazzling amount of denim and rhinestones. Underwood has long been vocal about how she hopes to push each tour to the next level, and on the Denim & Rhinestones trek, that meant pyro -- especially in her performance of "Burn" -- and aerial stunt work, a skill she picked up during her recent Las Vegas residency .

Her set also tipped its hat to her recent Guns N' Roses live team-ups: She covered "Welcome to the Jungle" during her performance, according to fan-captured video. According to SetList.fm , Underwood also brought Allen back to the stage to transfigure the title track of her album and tour, "Denim & Rhinestones," into a collaborative live effort.

But amid everything that's brand new about the Denim & Rhinestones Tour, Underwood didn't forget to included all the songs fans already know and love. Her set included several hits from across her career, including "Something in the Water," "Church Bells," "Cowboy Casanova," "Good Girl," "Blown Away," "Two Black Cadillacs" and the show-closing "Before He Cheats."

The Denim & Rhinestones Tour continues Monday (Oct. 17) with a stop in Indianapolis, Ind. Here's the full set list from opening night of Underwood's Denim & Rhinestones Tour, according to SetList.fm:

"Good Girl" "Church Bells" "Undo It" "Hate My Heart" "Cowboy Casanova" "If I Didn't Love You" "Wasted" "She Don't Know" "Blown Away" "Burn" "Cry Pretty"

"Ghost Story" "Two Black Cadillacs" "Garden" "Jesus, Take the Wheel" "How Great Thou Art" "Crazy Angels"

"Denim & Rhinestones" "Flat on the Floor" "Poor Everybody Else" "Last Name" "Something in the Water" "Welcome to the Jungle" "Before He Cheats"

“My career is going to college,” Carrie Underwood quipped early on in her Sept. 3 concert before 6,852 fans at the Great Allentown Fair.

Underwood was referring to her 17-year career, dating to when she began and won “American Idol” in 2005.

Underwood is nothing if not modest. By any measure of success in the music business, whether it be record sales, chart-topping hits, awards and critical accolades, Underwood’s career has already garnered a PhD.

In her third appearance as headliner at the Fair’s Grandstand, Underwood put on a phenomenal concert that demonstrated that her years of career “classes” as songwriter, recording artist and concert performer have not only prepared her well for “college,” but given her several honorary degrees.

The 8:15 p.m. start of Underwood’s Fair Grandstand concert rang out with “Church Bells,” followed in quick succession by “Southbound” and “Cowboy Casanova” (third studio album, “Play On,” 2009).

“It’s great to be back. This isn’t my first time here,” she said. Underwood headlined Grandstand concerts in 2007 and 2015 at the Allentown Fair.

Underwood puts her whole body into her performances, leaning forward, crouching, knees bent, as she belts out the big notes. Her animated style was emphasized by a flashy outfit of black knee-high heeled boots, black sequined shorts and gray-black sequined top.

The big notes were frequent and impressive. Her voice is a magnificent instrument that is as powerful as it is subtle. She’s able to navigate the crescendos and the quiet moments of her hit songs, many of which she’s co-written.

She’s not afraid or embarrassed to credit to where she feels the credit is due. “The good Lord has done some awesome things,” she said to a sympathetic and enthusiastic audience. Recalling that she saw Alan Jackson and Faith Hill concerts as a young fan, she said, “I didn’t know how I’d get on the stage.”

On the huge Fairgrounds Grandstand stage, Carrie Underwood was not only as a forceful performer, but a comfortable performer.

When she walked up the center stage steps onto a riser to perform “Choctaw County Affair” (fifth studio album, “Storyteller,” 2015) and found that there was no harmonica, she matter of fact said, “I’m about to perform on the harmonica.” But where was the harmonica? “No pressure,” she joked. A harmonica was soon brought forth, and Underwood proceeded to do a harmonica duo and solo bar none during the song.

Speaking of bars, the big screen in the center of the stage that provided a multiplicity of cinematic and art gallery-like images, displayed a saloon exterior for “Drinking Alone” (sixth studio album, “Cry Pretty,” 2018), a slow bluesy number akin to Peggy Lee’s “Fever,” which included a tremendous saxophone solo.

In the guise of the protagonists in her songs, Underwood gives as good as she gets, and then some.

Many of Underwood’s song lyrics display a strong independent streak, almost one of defiance, or at least of vociferous equality, in the face of toxic masculinity, as for example, “Dirty Laundry,” “All-American Girl” (second album, “Carnival Ride,” 2007) and “Undo It,” each of which can be interpreted as a strong statement of female empowerment.

Underwood’s songs can be deceptively simple yet deeply profound. Underwood married National Hockey League player Mike Fisher in 2010. They have two sons, Isaiah, 6, and Jacob, 2. Between the births of their sons, Underwood had three miscarriages. “Cry Pretty “ (2018) addresses such heartache.

And at the heart of the Allentown Fair concert and Underwood’s recordings (notably, the Christmas album. “My Gift,” 2020, and the gospel album, “My Savior,” 2021) are her evangelical Christian beliefs, exemplified in one of her first big hits, “Jesus Take The Wheel” (debut album, “Some Hearts,” 2005). Instead of raised cups of beer, many in the audience raised an arm, palm out and waving as one might during a praise song at a full-gospel church service.

“See You Again” (fourth studio album, “Blown Away,” 2013) puts forth a belief in the afterlife and meeting loved ones (and others, presumably), who have gone before.

“Sing it if you know it,” she said to introduce another faith-based hit song, “Something In The Water” (compilation album, “Greatest Hits: Decade No, 1,” 2014).

“Love Wins” (from the “Cry Pretty” album) was among the 22 songs in the concert that concluded at 9:52 p.m. The song’s opening lyrics, “A stray bullet and a momma cries/Her baby won’t be coming home tonight” resound from the streets of Allentown to war-torn Afghanistan.

The concert by Carrie Underwood was moving and comforting for many, no more so than for Angelo Scanzello of Catasauqua.

“My mother was supposed to be here. She [Joann] passed away. But she’s here in spirit,” Scanzello said. Attending the concert with him were Michelle Schmall of Whitehall and Monica Pavolko of Coplay.

No doubt, the Allentown Fair concert by Carrie Underwood was moving and comforting for many.

Concert Review: Carrie Underwood at Resorts World

carrie underwood tour review 2022

Carrie Underwood's "Reflections" concert at Resorts World in Las Vegas was an unforgettable night that showcased the incredible talent and captivating stage presence of this country music superstar. The venue was buzzing with excitement as fans eagerly awaited the show, and Carrie did not disappoint.

The concert kicked off with a burst of energy as Carrie took the stage with “Cowboy Casanova,” which was followed by a one-two punch of “Good Girl” and “Undo It”. She slowed things down a bit for “Wasted” where she began to get in her zone and hit the high notes she is known for.

As the night unfolded, Carrie seamlessly transitioned through her impressive catalog of hits. "All American Girl" had the audience singing along and celebrating the uplifting lyrics that define this country anthem. The stage production was top-notch, with dynamic lighting and visuals that complemented each song, enhancing the overall experience for the audience.

One of the highlights of the night was the performance of "Blown Away." The stage was transformed into a whirlwind of emotion as Carrie belted out the haunting lyrics of this powerful ballad. The combination of her vocal prowess and the atmospheric production created a mesmerizing moment that left the crowd in awe.

This was followed by one of her biggest hits "Jesus Take the Wheel." The powerful vocals and emotional delivery immediately set the tone for an evening filled with heartfelt performances which ended with a snippet of “How Great Thou Art,” which brought the crowd to their feet.

The energy reached its peak during the rendition of "Before He Cheats." The crowd roared with enthusiasm as Carrie delivered a fierce and spirited performance of this iconic revenge anthem. The stage was ablaze with intensity, and the audience couldn't help but be drawn into the fiery storytelling. The crowd was hooked from the start, and the atmosphere was electric.

As the concert approached its conclusion, Carrie Underwood took a moment to connect with the audience, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout her career. The night ended on a high note with the uplifting and spiritually charged "Something in the Water."

Carrie Underwood's "Reflections" concert at Resorts World was a masterclass in performance and a testament to her enduring talent. From the emotional depths of "Jesus Take the Wheel" to the empowering anthem "Before He Cheats," the evening was a journey through the diverse facets of Carrie's artistry. As the final notes of "Something in the Water" echoed through the venue, it was clear that the night had been a magical reflection of Carrie Underwood's remarkable career and the profound impact she has had on the world of country music.

carrie underwood tour review 2022

StarTribune

Review: carrie underwood rocks target center but insists that she's still country.

"In case you don't know it, we're at a country music concert," Carrie Underwood, the uncrowned queen of modern country, declared a half-hour into her performance Tuesday night at Target Center.

Gosh, darn, could have fooled me. After power rockers and power ballads, it felt like over-shrill. Like the "American Idol"-turned-Nashville sweetheart had transformed into a screaming rock 'n' roll vixen auditioning for a Guns N' Roses tribute band.

Then, finally, for her eighth song, Underwood pointed out that her band was so country that they have two fiddlers. Moreover, she said she brought out some country props (her words), specifically a cowgirl hat, a long coat with long fringe and a glass of red wine. And she explained that she thought of Dolly Parton and "Jolene" when she wrote the next song.

Well, I'll be if "She Don't Know" wasn't a perfect Dollyesque tune, a dark, bluegrassy grumble about the other woman who will end up burned by him just like she was. I guess Underwood is still country. She proved it again later on the acoustic selection "Garden," a pretty ballad about being kind, as in "you reap what you sow, what kind of garden would you grow."

Those two new numbers are from this year's "Denim & Rhinestones" album, which mostly suggests that Underwood now yearns to be Shania Twain, not Axl Rose. Maybe that explains why the album hasn't been her usual bestseller and why Target Center's upper level was half-full on a school night.

About a third of Tuesday's show was devoted to material from the new album. And Underwood's staging reflected the Denim & Rhinestones Tour theme, with diamond shapes on the stage and runway as well as a succession of outfits dripping in rhinestones.

The 110-minute presentation allowed the country superstar to prove that she's more than a volcanic vocalist, sparkly fashionista and spectacle-loving performer. The vocal gymnast is apparently an aspiring gymnast of another sort. She rode on a swing over the crowd to a satellite stage (during "Ghost Story") and returned later (during "Crazy Angels") via a globe-like cage, straddling the frame like an aerial acrobat. Not to worry. Underwood would not be mistaken for the derring-do of Pink, pop's ultimate aerial daredevil who does somersaults over the crowd while singing.

To be sure, the evening wasn't all vocal overkill. Underwood showcased nuanced singing on the gospely medley of "Jesus, Take the Wheel," her 2005 breakthrough hit, and the hymn "How Great Thou Art." And the tune "Denim & Rhinestones," featuring opening act Jimmie Allen singing and dancing with Underwood, was relatively subdued.

But the 39-year-old Oklahoman will rock you. She banged the drums on the rip-roaring new piece "Poor Everybody Else," belted the ebullient strut "Last Name" and shrieked the ultimate penultimate piece, Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle."

Allen, a late starter who is only two years younger than Underwood, showed why he is the reigning CMA best new artist. Apparently thinking this was the lamé-and-rhinestones tour, the colorful Delaware native demonstrated a stand-out stage manner, dancing like Michael Jackson (spins and a sideways moonwalk), autographing his tank top before tossing it into the crowd and sharing details about his two days in Minneapolis (he went to the Timberwolves game and declared that they sadly played like a high school team, and he had his baby's wagon stolen by a homeless man from outside his tour bus but got it back and donated money to the man). Allen manifested an appealing voice but his presence was stronger than his songs.

He has attended more than 8,000 concerts and written four books (on Prince, Led Zeppelin, Neil Diamond and Bob Dylan). Thus far, he has ignored readers’ suggestions that he take a music-appreciation class.

Carrie Underwood announces Denim & Rhinestones Tour

New arena tour treks 43 US cities

On the heels of her triumphant headlining return to the iconic Stagecoach Festival, Carrie Underwood announces her new arena tour, The Denim & Rhinestones Tour with dates in fall 2022 and spring 2023. The new tour, promoted by AEG Presents, will kick off on October 15th in Greenville, SC, making stops in 43 US cities including New York’s Madison Square Garden, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and LA’s Crypto.com Arena before concluding in Seattle, WA on March 17th. Underwood will be joined by special guest Jimmie Allen on all dates. After teasing fans about the impending announcement on social media and on last night’s episode of American Idol, Underwood made the official reveal this morning.

Allen will join the trek as his star continues to rise, following his first GRAMMY Award nomination for Best New Artist in 2022 and CMA and ACM Award wins for New Artist of the Year & New Male Artist of the Year, respectively, in 2021. His third album Tulip Drive will be released June 24th.

Tickets for the concerts go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, May 20th at 10 am local time. A limited number of exclusive VIP Packages will be available which include an amazing selection of tickets, Meet & Greets, custom merchandise, and much more.

“I’m thrilled to be hitting the road again with The Denim & Rhinestones Tour,” says Underwood. “I’m having such an amazing time with my Las Vegas residency and look forward to continuing that next year after the tour. I’m excited to bring the new music of Denim & Rhinestones to life on tour, as well as put new spins on familiar favorites. We’ve been working hard already preparing an amazing show, and I can’t wait to see everyone on the road!”

The all-new production will be directed by Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson), and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.

Since early in her career, Underwood has designated a portion of ticket sales from her tours to support worthwhile charities and organizations. She continues that tradition by arranging for a donation of $1 from each ticket sold for The Denim & Rhinestones Tour to be contributed to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which has been helping America’s heroes since 9/11 by providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building custom-designed smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. The Foundation is also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and aiding the victims of major US disasters.

Underwood will release her highly-anticipated album, Denim & Rhinestones , on June 10th via UMG Nashville. The album is her latest collaboration with David Garcia, with Garcia and Underwood having co-produced her critically-acclaimed 2018 release, Cry Pretty , which marked the first time Underwood produced her own album. Garcia and Underwood also co-produced Underwood’s 2021 GRAMMY Award-winning album of gospel hymns, My Savior . The lead single from the new upcoming album, “ Ghost Story, ” is currently climbing the charts and has garnered over 30 million global streams. The song’s cinematic music video , directed by acclaimed director and photographer Randee St. Nicholas, is available now.

Denim & Rhinestones signed CD box set and vinyl box sets are also available, which include an exclusive t-shirt, rhinestone pack, denim tote bag, and album slip mat in limited quantities. The vinyl edition will be available in July and a cassette version on August 5th.

2022 dates for Underwood’s ongoing Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency at the Resorts World Theatre continue through May 21st. The first artist to grace the largest and tallest stage in Las Vegas, Underwood opened the new 5,000-capacity, world-class theatre with a sold-out engagement in December 2021, followed by sold out runs in March and April 2022. 2023 dates for Reflection will be announced at a later date.

Carrie Underwood Welcomes New Farm Baby With the Funniest Name

Carrie Underwood ‘s farm is growing with the addition of a new donkey named “Chili Dog.”

Obviously, a name like chili dog is funny, but it’s even funnier knowing that the country singer is a vegetarian. Perhaps names like Broccoli Sprout or Lentil Bean just didn’t have the same ring to them.

The country singer turned to social media to share the news with a photo of her new foal looking into the camera. She made sure to shout out Chili Dog’s parents — Jack and Diane. The two are also the mother and father to Little Diddy. The donkeys first arrived at her farm around this time last year.

Carrie Underwood’s Tennessee Farm

Underwood first talked about building her dream home with husband Mike Fisher in 2016. The couple now live on a 400-acre piece of property with their two sons, Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5.

The sprawling farm features a garden, greenhouse, orchard and more. In addition to the donkeys, the “Denim & Rhinestones” singer also raises chicken and tends to her fruits and vegetables. The country hitmaker has developed quite the green thumb and often shares the produce she grows.

Does Carrie Underwood Have New Music Coming Soon?

As of late, Underwood appears to be enjoying a slower pace. The American Idol alum has not released a new album since her 2022 Denim & Rhinestones project arrived. She did a tour to promote the album, but since then has only done a Las Vegas residency and a handful of other shows here and there.

There has been no indication of new music in the works at this time.
