This was a great and awesome experience! Able to see the underwater world without getting wet. The guide made the experience fun and enjoyable !

We did the ferry arrival, semi submarine, the 2 hour inland tour and the helicopter departure. All worth it. We had a great tour and learned so much. Do not skip the Casino! Watch a movie there! We wish the botanical gardens were not so pricey. We skipped that. Have fun!

We went to Catalina the week of Christmas and new years. Unfortunately this was a really bad time to come. Half the tours are unavailable as they were seasonal activities and half the shops/restaurants are closed up for the season. Many won't be opening back up until February or March and some don't open up until April-May. When booking activities I recommend coming during spring or summer. It seems you'll have more fun during those months. What really made the tours memorable were the guides! We loved the guides and the efforts they put into our experience.

Photo of Sophia C.

This was loads of fun and way more enjoyable than I thought it would be! Bought the fish food torpedoes (16 shots for $20 or you can split with a companion and get 8 shots each). It was literally a live action Nemo submarine ride haha. Saw LOTS of fish and kelp forests. Ride was nicely air conditioned and seats had your own porthole to look out from. Easy walk from the cruise terminal and bathrooms right nearby too. A great way to spend an hour in Catalina!

catalina tours avalon

I bought tickets from Groupon and although it was such a hassle trying to coordinate and get through to someone finally to book them, the actual submarine was fun. You basically pay more money to be able to feed the fish, but it's worth it! The amount of fish that end up coming to your side is crazy. If you have tickets through email, make sure to get actual tickets on the pier to give to the worker on the boat. Or they ask you to go back afterwards to get it for them.

I booked the two hour "Inside Adventure Tour" super quick online without much research. I had searched "jeep tours" on google and this was one of the first to pop up. I hadn't realized when I booked this one it was not a jeep at all. Full honesty I was nervous I was going to super disappointed after seeing the cool Hummer and Jeep tours going on, on the island all weekend. It ended up being perfect! It was really rainy and chilly most of the day so it was nice to be inside the van in a temperature controlled environment lol. Our driver was really nice, knowledgeable, and had a great eye for spotting the wildlife! This tour was half price of even the other tours cheapest offerings. I would definitely recommend.

Great experience! Did this about 10 years ago and it is definitely better than it used to be.If it's a busy day, things can be a bit chaotic. You need to pay cash for feeding the fish (torpedoes) so heads up.

catalina tours avalon

Took the Catalina Inside Tour on Tuesday, July 18th that boarded at 10 AM. We were in a nine passenger air conditioned van. The tour and tour guide were outstanding. The tour guide spoke clearly and conveyed very interesting information about the island from well before Wrigley purchased it. It was interesting how the island is run today for its 4000 residents and many daily tourists. I highly recommend including this tour to l arm more than you might on a Google search.

Photo of Daiwynn O.

My boyfriend and I love this adventure. We've never seen so many fish up close. Highly recommended!

catalina tours avalon

The Nautilus yellow semi-submarine is cool underwater and well ventilated! A good break on a hot day. Pay cash for the food torpedo, get your phone ready, and press the button to launch food to the fish. Then video the feeding frenzy! Our tour guide had a noticeable accent; a good sense of humor but hard to understand. Even though we were a few feet underwater, there was some cell-phone signal. Passengers watch the fish while sitting down; a good moment to recharge your phone using a battery pack.

This town is made for walking...and that’s just what you’ll do.

Avalon is easy to navigate on foot. While strolling along the waterfront is fun, visiting the charming shops and seaside restaurants; the best way to appreciate the heritage of Avalon is to walk its residential streets and observe island residents at a relaxed pace, away from the hustle and bustle of the popular beach front.

The town of Avalon was originally laid out in the late 1880’s by George Shatto. The beautiful crescent beach was used as a tent site by a few mainlanders who came to fish the shores of Catalina Island. Shatto, hoping to create a more permanent resort community, and to make a quick profit in real estate, built the Hotel Metropole  and a wharf to accommodate island visitors. In 1887, Shatto hired surveyors to plot streets for the town on the flat land behind the crescent shaped bay. Most of the home sites were tent sites, just 20 feet wide, making the newly created lots very narrow. Shattos’ sister-in-law, Etta Marilla Whitney, named the town Avalon, after a phrase out of Alfred Tennyson’s Idylls of the King, a King Arthur Saga . Unfortunately, after 4 years, without a strong real estate market, Mr. Shatto went into foreclosure. Catalina Island was then acquired by three Banning brothers, sons of Phineas Banning, a pioneer in stagecoach and steamship transportation, founder of the city of Wilmington, the Wilmington Transportation Co. and the port of Los Angeles.

The Banning brothers formed the Santa Catalina Island Company to market Avalon as a resort destination. Avalon gained an international reputation for big game fishing and visitors enjoyed trips to Avalon to swim the clear waters, sightsee on the glass-bottom boats (which were invented in Avalon in the 1890’s), golf on one of the first courses in southern California (built in 1892), and dance the night away to big band concerts. Avalon incorporated as a city in June of 1913 with just 500 residents. The city suffered a terrible tragedy when a fire, known as the Great Fire of 1915, burned down much of the town's buildings and many of its hotels.

William Wrigley, Jr. purchased controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company and Catalina Island in 1919. For the next ten years, Mr. Wrigley undertook an ambitious economic development program, building the Catalina Country Club , Bird Park, and the legendary Catalina Casino Building . He transported visitors to the island aboard two steamships, the S.S. Avalon and S.S. Catalina. Many of the homes in Avalon were also built during this time period.

William Wrigley’s son, Philip Knight Wrigley, continued developing the Island resort after his father's passing. He ushered in the Big Band era at the Catalina Casino, redesigned the beachfront Crescent Avenue with an early California feel, and built the mountain top Airport-in-the-Sky.

Avalon is a delightful residential community with a rich legacy of charming cottages, beautiful homes and historic buildings. While in Avalon, take one or both of these walks. You’ll gain an understanding of the history of the community, while exploring the quaint residential streets at your own pace.

Walk #1: Discover the “Flats of Avalon”

This leisurely stroll will take you through the residential areas on the “flats” of Avalon. The walk is mostly level with one very short uphill section, and will take approximately 45 minutes.

From Crescent Avenue and the Cabrillo Fountain at Wrigley Plaza, walk up Sumner Avenue. On the right is the storefront for Catalina Crafters, adorned by beautiful and historic Catalina Island tiles. On the left is the four-story Glenmore Plaza Hotel , originally built in 1892 (renovated in 2018) and the oldest hotel in Avalon, having survived the Great Fire of 1915.

Further along to the right is the Los Angeles County complex, which includes the Avalon Public Library , the Justice Court and the Sheriff’s Department. Avalon is part of Los Angeles County and the city contracts for these services. The County complex is built on the former homesite of William Banning, one of the Banning Brothers, and the father of famous WWII leader General George S. Patton Jr., who met his wife on Catalina Island in the early 1900’s.

Across from the Avalon Public Library is the Island Tour Plaza, where tour buses and hummers load visitors to take them into Catalina's interior. Restrooms are located in the Tour Plaza (get the passcode from the Mini Golf kiosk). Between the two restroom entrances you’ll notice a colorful Catalina Tile fountain. This fountain was originally park of Bird Park, the aviary built by Wrigley.

Just past the Island Tour Plaza are the Mini Golf Gardens , a challenging 18-hole miniature golf course which opened in 1973. Continuing up Sumner Avenue, you will find our brand new grocery store,  Vons , which celebrated its grand opening in January 2019.   At the corner of Sumner and Beacon just past Vons, turn left, and then turn right onto Eucalyptus, the first street on your right. This quiet street is closed to vehicular traffic and is lined by small, charming historic cottages, many of which have been remodeled. Walking the length of Eucalyptus, you’ll notice that it is the only street in Avalon that has two trees growing in the middle of it.

At the end of Eucalyptus, cross Tremont Street and head up Avalon Canyon Street to Country Club Drive. This is where the road gets a little steep. Head up the hill for a short ½ block walk and you will arrive at the Catalina Country Club, the former home to William Wrigley Jr’s. Chicago Cubs spring training camp. It’s also the home of the Catalina Golf Course , the oldest operating golf course west of the Mississippi. It was home to the famed Bobby Jones Tournament from 1931-1955.  The Catalina Island Country Club is a striking example of Early California Revival architecture, with cream colored walls, deep green trim and a Spanish tile roof. Its stunning courtyard, dining room, boardroom, bay room and casual pub make a perfect venue for small meetings and weddings.

From the Country Club, double-back down the hill to the traffic circle (known as “5 Corners” to locals) and you’ll see the cream colored building and red roofs of the Avalon City Hall complex to the left, near the corner of Avalon Canyon and Tremont, where approximately 50 city employees work. From here, cross and turn right onto Tremont and go past the cluster of garden cottages on your right. To your left are the streets leading back to the beach. Turn left down Descanso Avenue and you’ll again capture the residential flavor of Avalon in the 1920’s when many of these homes were the first pre-cut tract homes erected by the Santa Catalina Island Company. Some of the homes still retain the one level peaked and capped roof style of the early days.

Continue down Descanso for 2 blocks. You will notice that many of the houses have small driveways, just big enough for a golf cart. If you look at the corner of Descanso and Third, on the right is a two-story white house. This house is constructed from the cabins of the Banning brothers’ old steamer tugs, the SS Warrior and SS Falcon, which were used to bring visitors to Avalon at the turn of the 19th century.

At Third St take a left and head to the next street, Catalina Avenue. Take a right at the corner and you’ll be heading back to the waterfront and Crescent Avenue, where your journey began.

Walk #2: Explore the “Heights of Avalon”

This walk will take you through some of the residential streets and commercial areas and up into the heights of Avalon.  The walk is a bit of an uphill walk at first, then levels out and sets off downhill. This walk will take approximately one hour.

Begin at Crescent and Marilla, at Island Spa Catalina, located at the former site of the El Encanto Plaza, the historic marketplace which originally opened in 1933 as an arts and crafts showplace. The Island Spa Catalina blends 15,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor bliss into the island’s only experiential spa. Amenities include nine treatment rooms, luxurious lounges, private suites, jacuzzi, soaking pool, dry sauna, eucalyptus steam room and expansive relaxation deck with beautiful ocean views.

Head up Marilla Avenue, left of Island Spa Catalina, to the first street on your right, Vieudelou Avenue (French for “view of the water”).  The house on the left corner as you turn onto Vieudelou is the oldest house in Avalon, one of the few structures in town surviving the 1915 fire. Two-thirds of the way up Vieudelou, on the left-hand side, you will see the former Catholic Church, now a private residence. Continue up the hill, known as “Vinegar Hill”, named from the Prohibition times when the locals in the area would indulge in the making of moonshine. Periodic raids by the revenuers would break up the operations and dump the whole mess down the street.  As the moonshine fermented in the streets, it caused the area to smell of vinegar, hence the nickname Vinegar Hill.

As the street curves to the right, at the outside of the bend is a shady garden garden spot with a bench. Take a rest as the street continues to go uphill a bit further. Stage Road will be just the next road to the left and follow that up the hill. You’ll come to a fork in the road where there is a pleasant garden and another bench. Keep to your left and follow the road along the heights of Avalon. You will be looking over the sunny western area of Avalon towards a splendid view of the entire town and the bay and the channel beyond to the mainland. There are splendid views from this area and some new homes are being built to take full advantage of the views, so be mindful of the new construction.

Continue straight until you arrive at upper Whittley Avenue with Spanish style homes across the street and to your right that were built in the 1920’s. Take a left down the hill and you will be walking past a variety of styles of homes from almost every decade.

On the left side of Whittley is the Pacific Bell Telephone company building, decorated in historic Catalina Tile. The last manual switchboard in the Bell system was in operation here until 1978. Just past the telephone building on the left side in the historic Hotel Catalina . The first Hotel Catalina burned down in a fire in 1915, but was quickly rebuilt.

Continue down Whittley toward the water and you will reach Crescent Avenue again, just a short ½ block away from where you started.

A father and son wearing pirate hats

"My husband and I took my brother's family on the safari ride to see the bisons and had 5 sightings. We then took the kids on the nautilus submarine ride to see the fish and the kids had a blast. It was an awesome New Year weekend stay at the Catalina thanks to Catalina Adventure Tours."

two people Parasailing

"It was a wonderful day with safari island adventure tour. The truck took us all the way around the island to the top of the mountains. The road was full of turns but the driver was very professional. If you have fear from hight it is better not try this. Otherwise it is very great exciting experience"

Great Wall of China

"I was worried when I read the negative review and still decided to go on the trip as I thought my grandson would enjoy it. It turned out to be a wonderful trip. I had taken the glass bottom boat trip years ago and it was not great. This is a huge improvement. There are large glass viewing areas with seating all around and lots of things to see clear down to the seabed. Highly recommend."

Crab Cakes

"My husband and I did the Skyline Drive Tour with the Activities and Adventures of Santa Catalina Island Company. The biggest problem, there were 20 tours to choose from. We had a wonderful guide, Cindy Lowe, who was informative, humorous, personable. Will plan for more of these tours with our next visit."

Five New Reasons to Visit Catalina Island

A big thanks to Catalina Island Company for arranging my stay so I could provide this detailed review of my experience.

Flashbacks of Italy came to mind as we spiraled up and around switchback turns from the harbor town of Avalon. The cliff-hugging ocean vista views were certainly worth these fearful moments, expressing “OMG” aloud as we whizzed above the aquamarine crystal-clear waters below, where white boats accented the dazzling blue hues and homes hung off the curved hugging hillsides. Just 26 miles off the California coast, Catalina Island feels worlds away from mainland Los Angeles. RELATED: Things to Do on Catalina Island

We hit the bumpy dirt Stagecoach Road summit in a 1993 fully restored bus named Betsy, driven by an expert, experienced storyteller with many cautionary tales of approaching and talking to the island’s wild bison. As we bounced along, we admired the raw beauty of the land, untouched and rugged with sloped rolling green hills, more verdant than ever due to recent rains. The air felt so fresh that I wondered if breathing deeply here might prolong my life.

We’ve experienced a similar adventure on a biofuel Hummer, in search of the free-roaming American Bison (about 50 descendants left from a movie shoot in the 1920s) and the island’s endemic fox – a once-endangered species that are just as curious as us.  One evening at dusk at Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors, five of the petite cat-like creatures with blackberry noses sniffed us out over sunset wine on the terrace. They’re adorable!

This time, we arrived in Catalina to venture an hour into the interior to experience El Rancho Escondido , the Wrigley family’s hidden ranch, now open to the public for the first time ever. The tour, offered by Catalina Island Company, was oh so much more than we imagined.

Pro Tip:  To get to Catalina Island, book one of the eight modern Catalina Express vessels that depart from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point year-round. Be sure to upgrade the hour-long journey on one of their sleek smooth-riding boats with comfortable seating in the Commodore Lounge. For $20 more per ticket, enjoy priority boarding and check-in privileges, with complimentary beverages and snacks served right to your seat. Bubbly, beer, and wine are among the options. For added privacy and exclusivity, upgrade to the Captain’s Lounge with your six closest friends. Book tickets in advance as these upgrades sell out fairly quickly and are rarely available on the day of departure. RELATED: Destination Guide: Catalina Island

Venture into the island’s interior to a Hidden Ranch

Built in 1932 by Philip and Helen Wrigley, the island’s Arabian horse ranch was once used for a Wild West Cattle Show, as Philip Wrigley (who died in 1977) wanted to develop a place in the interior of the island as a tourist destination.  The couple set out to develop a breeding program for Santa Catalina Island’s wild horses. By the 1950s, their efforts evolved into breeding champion Arabian horses that were exhibited at shows and competitions across the US. El Rancho became a world-class horse ranch that dignitaries came to visit in later years to get away from it all.

The spectacular landmark, nearly a century old, with a Spanish-style courtyard and stables, recently underwent a two-year remodel. The three- to four-hour tour includes a horse exhibition where guests learn about horses’ body functions, behavioral habits, how different types of horses are used, and horse ranch riding techniques. We loved being able to pet the horses and take photos with them. The golden, sleek, honey-colored stallion – similar to a palomino – was beautiful, while the wild speed of the white Arabian mare was impressive to witness. Once Palomino and feral horses could be found on the ranch because they could be let loose, but in the 1930s, they decided a higher class of horse was needed, so they brought an Arabian stallion named Kabba to the island in 1931. Today, many horses on the island are descendants of those bred in the mid-20 th century.

An impressive Saddle & Trophy Room houses one-of-a-kind saddles, trophies won, and many personal Western memorabilia and photos from the Wrigleys. In addition to serving as a home for the family’s horses, the estate features vines of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, planted in 2008 for Rusack Vineyards, who determined the same type of grapes that grow well in Burgundy grow well in Catalina. Their sustainable practices deliver handcrafted award-winning wines with a tasting room and winery on the central coast.

The second stop at The Bishop’s Chapel, with original stained-glass windows, comes with more awe-inspiring views. Learn about Jory’s Bell, the 130-year-old Baptismal Font, and the cross that once sat atop the entry doors to the downtown Los Angeles Cathedral of St. Paul’s, having spent 30 years on Santa Cruz Island before being refurbished and gifted to The Bishop’s Chapel in 2021.

If time permits, the tour may stop at the private “Airport in the Sky” in the center of the island to learn about the island’s exciting aviation history and grab one of their Killer Cookies or Bison Burgers to go.

The Wrigley family has preserved the island’s natural beauty, deeding 42,000 acres to the Catalina Island Conservancy, a non-profit they established in 1972. Their daughter, Alison Rigley Rusack, and her husband, Geoff Rusack, have continued to serve as custodians of the island.

Pro Tips: Wear sturdy shoes. Bring binoculars. Close your eyes if you are scared of heights. Use the bathroom beforehand, although clean bathrooms are available at the ranch. Find the local Rusack wine at the Vons store in town.

Sip a flight of California craft brews from Flx Biergarten

This new colorful open-air Biergarten right in town offers a variety of exceptional SoCal suds with fire pits, outdoor games, and even beer pong. On a summer day, you’ll love the Firestone Cali Squeeze Blood Orange Hefeweizen (an island favorite) or Captain Fatty’s Brewery Beach Beer from Goleta with a lemon cucumber aftertaste. They have cultivated a selection of brews that will appeal to all. Check out the fun beer tap handles like Beachwood Brewing’s golden trophies with delicious West Coast IPAs. Wine, seltzer, kombucha, and nonalcoholic options are also available.

You may notice the Flx bus has the same logo as the new Biergarten, taking its name from the iconic 50s Flxible buses that carried tourists on the streets of Avalon and the island’s interior.

Pro Tip: Order a beer flight to try many unique SoCal craft beers and pair them with snacks like Spicy Teriyaki Jerky and mustard pretzels.

Dive deep into history with a self-guided Catalina “Casino” Tour

Step back in time and appreciate Catalina’s most well-known landmark with a $20 self-guided tour . Explore the historic building, watch films from the silent movie era in the cinema, and marvel at the sweeping views of Avalon Bay from the second-floor veranda. Built in 1929, the “Casino” – originally from Italian as a gathering or entertaining place – is an entertainment destination and not a gambling venue. This is where the red-carpet movie premier was born, where old-school Hollywood starlets flocked, and where the first sound and motion picture theater began.

Today, admire the Art Deco details of the past – like hand-painted murals at the entrance, ornamental light fixtures, the original pipe organ, and the auditorium’s murals depicting the history of the island, California, and the progress of man. On the top level in the Casino, imagine 4,000 people dancing the night away to Big Band music in the world’s largest circular ballroom.

Pro Tip: Photo opportunities abound on the top level with soaring columns and views of the entire harbor.

Explore Ocean Wonders at the Dome Theater and New Exhibits at the Catalina Museum for Art and History

Find Chicago Cubs memorabilia at the Catalina Museum for Art and History along with films about Catalina and the people who’ve inhabited the island. Permanent exhibits include Dale Chihuly’s Aureolin’s yellow spire chandelier and the Roy Rose Sculpture Garden. The Cabinet of Curiosities, in honor of its 70 th anniversary, displays 70 objects showcasing the rich heritage of the island over 70 years.

Catch two new exhibits at the Catalina Museum of Art and History coming this year:

Ann Weber: 26 Miles ( March 23 – August 2, 2024)

The voyage of her totemic sculptures across the San Pedro Channel.

Sarah Kaizer: Rare Air ( June 8 – September 8, 2024)

Original gouache and ink artwork from the book Rare Air, with an interactive component for audiences to recognize and appreciate the diversity of winged creatures that share our world.

Nearby, find the Ocean Wonders at the Dome Theater to experience “IMMERSED: Ocean Wonders” in an immersive bubble that simulates scuba diving through the world's oceans. Perfect for young kids or those who aren’t ready to kayak, snorkel, or scuba offshore just yet, the IMMERSED: Ocean Wonders 30-minute virtual dive may whet your desire to explore the island. The full 360-degree film captures moments from all angles and offers total immersion in Catalina’s lush kelp forests, getting up close and personal with majestic whale sharks, playful sea lions and dolphins, bull sharks, manta rays, and a rare dugong.

Pro Tip:   Ten percent of Ocean Wonders ticket sales are donated to conservation groups affiliated with filming locations. Open from 12 noon to 8:30 PM; arrive 15 minutes before show time.

Stay at the recently renovated Hotel Atwater

Right in the town center, in the heart of Avalon, and steps from all of the restaurants, shops, and land and ocean excursions, a recent hotel renovation stays true to the Wrigley family legacy. Hotel Atwater is decorated in refreshing oceanic style décor and showcases a large, bold, colored painting that anchors the check-in, showing what Catalina may have once looked like long ago. Established in 1920, Hotel Atwater was the first hotel built by the Catalina Island Company under the ownership of William Wrigley, Jr., who named the hotel after Helen Atwater Wrigley, wife of his son Philip Knight Wrigley.

The airy and bright lobby is a nice place to rest, with historic Wrigley artifacts such as talented musician Helen Atwater Wrigley’s prized accordion, built by hand in Stradella, Italy. In the lobby’s bathroom, have a chuckle and look closely at the wallpaper depicting cheeky whimsical animals behaving badly - smoking and drinking champagne.

A stay here means sleeping peacefully in a comfy bed with luxurious linens, in one of 95 modern rooms and suites. Even 2 mini bottles of bubbly await in the room’s fridge. Enjoy added perks like a $20 daily restaurant credit for dining and drinks, 15% off Catalina Island Company activities and tours, use of beach towels, and luggage service to and from the ferry terminal.

Next door to the lobby, guests can find the hotel’s new Bistro at the Atwater Café – serving yummy coffee medleys, scrumptious pastries, warm quiches, and breakfast sandwiches and burritos – perfect to take on the go to the beach or elsewhere. Try the Machaca Breakfast Burrito with shredded beef and Oaxacan cheese stuffed inside the scrambled eggs and cilantro onion mix. Here, a neon sign reminds you “In All the World, No Place Like This.”

Pro Tips: Mosey a block over for lunch or dinner at Avalon Grille for exceptional meats, local fish like fresh seared yellowtail atop truffle mashed potatoes and pork belly bites, and the island’s famous Buffalo Milk cocktail – created in the 1970s – a boozy milkshake made with vodka, coffee liqueur, crème de Banana, Crème de Cacao, vanilla ice cream, banana, and whipped cream doused with nutmeg. Yum! Nearby, Bluewater Grill serves up seafood and clam chowder and Descanso Beach Club is a great beachfront option for lunch on the water.

Catalina is a memorable destination any time of year. While summer is the most popular time to visit, May and October may be the best months, with great weather and fewer crowds. Special events include weekend festivities like marathons, jazz festivals, craft festivals, and the ever-popular Catalina Wine Mixer.

Local Pro Tips:

Visit mid-week when there are fewer crowds and better deals.

Book the Sea Wolf semi-submersible adventure to get face-to-face with marine life as you cruise 5 feet below.

Take the yellow Cyclone power boat ferry to Two Harbors, on the other end of the island, for a day or overnight. It leaves early in the morning and returns to the main harbor of Avalon around 4 PM.

Restaurants are upgrading. Lobster Trap should be open by summer as they are renovating and expanding with a sushi bar. Antonio’s is taking over the old Pier 24 opening with a new menu concept by summer.
