The National Highway 22 between Chandigarh and Shimla carries a lot of traffic everyday. It is one of the most important entry points to Himachal Pradesh from the plains. But people who travel on this route don’t really know how much it has to offer. There are some very interesting and scenic places to visit on this route. You might have heard about some of them while others might be new to you. You might even have noticed these places as you passed by but never stopped to check them out. Well, after reading this article I hope some of you will take time to stop at these places and explore them.

5. Dagshai – A British Era Cantonment Town  [ 1734 mtr ] 

Dagshai is 11 km from Solan towards Kalka and is one of the oldest towns in the Solan district. It began as a cantonment town in 1847. It is located on a picturesque hillock that will be pleasing to nature lovers.

You can visit the Dagshai Central Jail which is now maintained by the Military Engineering services and has been turned into a museum.

You can also visit the St. Patricks R.C. Church which happens to be one of the oldest churches in North India having been completed in 1852.

4. Kiarighat 

If you want to stay in a place surrounded by natural beauty and avoid Shimla’s population density then Kiarighat would appeal to you.

It is a small hill village about 27 km from Shimla and 19 km from Solan. It is located about 8 km from JP University. It used to be a Dak bunglow during the British Raj and now Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) runs a Tourist Inn here. You can come here for a nice evening tea or even stay overnight before heading into Shimla.

3. Timber Trail

Located near the town of Parwanoo, this holiday destination is just 6 km from the border of Himachal and Haryana.

The resort is based on two opposite hills separated by the Kaushalya River and joined together by a Cable Car system.

You can visit the resort just to ride the cable car or even plan a prolonged stay in the foothills of the Shivalik range.

2. Mohan National Heritage Park

This up and coming location is going to become very popular once the construction is complete. A project of the Mohan Meakin Group , Mohan National Heritage Park is located 8 km from Solan towards Shimla.

A 5 km downhill road goes off of NH 22 from the village of Salogra to the park. There is an impressive temple in the middle of the park which contains some very unique statues of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

The marble work is exquisite and there is a heritage park and Yoga and meditation center as well. Though it is still a work in progress it is already a must see place.

Everyone has heard of Kasauli but most people give it a miss, opting to visit the much bigger Shimla. But if you want to experience Shimla of the 19th century you should visit Kasauli.

This small little colonial town with its European architecture and cobbled paths can act as a time machine. You have to go off the Kalka Shimla highway from Solan for about 28 km to reach Kasauli.

You can visit Monkey Point which fairly obviously is the highest point of Kasauli. You can also visit St. Patrick’s Church or just walk around the Mall road and explore the town on foot. This is a place worth visiting for a couple of days for those who love nature and want to get away from the insane rush of city life.

  • Baba Bhalku Rail Museum, Shimla – At a distance of 1 km from Shimla Railway Station and 190 m from Shimla Old Bus Stand, Baba Bhalku Railway Museum was inaugurated on 7th July 2011 as a tribute to the man who guided the construction of the rail line with his supernatural powers. The museum has some very interesting parts from the pages of history such as the 1930 lost property register. The register has details of lost properties like bags, umbrellas, caps, and coats left in the waiting rooms of the station or the trains. The museum also has on display several items and parts used in the trains dating back to the early 20th century.
  • Mitran da Dhaba, Siswanbadi Road – This dhaba would be on the highway. Stop here for some lip-smacking Punjabi food prepared with generous dollops of ghee and butter. Their Kali Dal and Mango Lassi are quite a hit among regulars. 
  • Raja Dhaba, Chandigarh Road – Quite famous for its plush interiors and heavenly food, Raja Dhaba is a great option for a wholesome lunch or dinner. Their naan chole and unmatched variety of chats are to die for.

The Shimla Airport, also known as Jubbarhatti airport, is around 20km away from the main city and is also one of the very few airports at any of the hill stations. For comfort and convenience, it is best to take a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus from Chandigarh. Apart from HRTC, other government non AC buses are also available all through the day at a gap of 30 to 60 minute. Private operators also offer AC bus services in this route.

HRTC runs multiple buses daily from Chandigarh to Shimla. These are Volvo, AC Deluxe and Non-AC buses. They are available in the morning as well as night.

Timing – Chandigarh to Shimla Buses are quite frequent and available at a gap of every 30 to 60 mins. Timing starts from very early morning (reaching Shimla at 6 to 6.30 AM) and runs throughout the day till evening.

Booking – Advance booking available at – www.hrtchp.com/hrtctickets . If you are planning to visit during the high season, book your tickets well ahead of the journey date as the demand for tickets are high.

Fare – One way fare from Chandigarh to Shimla is approximately between Rs 300 to Rs 1200 depending on the type of bus.

Starting Point – Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) Sector 43, Chandigarh. Few buses in the Delhi-Shimla and other long distance routes are available from ISBT Sector 17.

Halt – The buses halt twice during the journey. Depending on the time of travel, the 1 st stop will be for breakfast/lunch/dinner and the 2 nd stop for tea break. It is better to take some refreshments and keep some water with you before the journey.

Drop and Transfer to Hotel – The HRTC bus will drop you at Shimla ISBT. If you are staying at a nearby hotel, you can pull your own luggage or hire a porter. Otherwise, hire a local cab to drop you to your hotel.

Other – HRTC timetable is very strict and they do not cancel a scheduled journey at the last moment if there are less passengers.

Private Bus Service

Apart from HRTC AC bus service and other government Non-AC buses, there are many private operators who are providing AC Deluxe and Non-AC bus service in this route. Compared to private buses, HRTC services are much more punctual and dependable. You should opt for a private bus only if bookings in HRTC buses are not available.
