The temple is placed just about 78 km south of Pondicherry and 235 Km away from Chennai which is the capital of Tamil Nadu state. The roof of the temple is covered with gold plates. The presiding deity of the temple is symbolized by air, one of the five elements of the universe and is identified as Akasa Lingam. The two most renowned Rishis Vyaghrapada and Patanjali were paid a respect here in olden period. And the faith they had in the superiority of magic that deity could be controlled by magical words or rituals was achieved. On the other side Lord Shiva got delighted and it is said that during the festival of Thai Poosam, Lord makes known himself by performing cosmic dance. Subsequently, a dance hall was erected during 1251-1272 AD by Jatavarman Sundara Pandya.

Thillai Kali Amman Temple: One of the famous Goddess Parvathi Temples, Thillai Kali Amman Temple is a significant place to visit while on Chidambaram tour. The statue of Thillai Kali Amman emerges with four faces here. The goddess is also dubbed by many other names such as Vadapathira Kali, Bhranta Samundeeswari and Thillai Amman. Thillai Nataraja Temple

The name Chidambaram means “Sky of consciousness” for “Chit” means consciousness and “Ambaram” means Sky. As per the Vedas and the scriptures, the true purpose of a living being is to attain this sky of consciousness. Here at the Thillai Nataraja Temple, Lord Shiva as Nataraja [lord of dance] is at that state of supreme bliss or Ananta [immense joy] and is dancing the true cosmic dance of life, the Ananta Natanam.

The Thillai Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram is situated at Chidambaram town, East Central, Chennai. It is one of the Pancha-Bhoota-Stalams in India. Its represents the 5 Shiva temples in India, each dedicated to 5 basic elements of life which includes Air, Sky, Water, Fire and Earth. This temple represents Lords Shiva worshipped in the form of Aakasham or Sky [Aether].

The legend behind this temple proves that Lord Shiva is beyond space and time, as he controls the creation, destruction and recreation by means of his cosmic dance. The story starts with a group of sages who lived in the Thillai Forests of Chidambaram. They believed that magic can overpower God and mantras and rituals can control God. Shiva in order to teach them a lesson wandered along the forests in the form of a beggar seeking alms with Vishnu taking the form of Mohini following Shiva as his wife. The wives of rishis were captivated by the elegance and charm of the handsome mendicant and the young rishis fell for the immense beauty of Mohini. The older rishis who got annoyed by this started a Homam [sacrificial fire] to raise fearsome and powerful creatures from the fire. At first they sent a tiger towards Shiva, he holds it with his hand and nails it and made it lifeless. He wore the tiger skin as his vastra [cloth]. Not moved by this act, the rishis sent a poisonous serpent which Shiva got hold and ornamented his neck with it, and then a demon “Mulayakan” was sent. Shiva placed his feet on Mulayakan’s head and broke his spine which made him motionless under the lord’s feet. Shiva started dancing on the demon when the rishis sent the sacrificial fire itself on Shiva which he placed on his left hand. Having lost the fire, the rishis sent the vedic mantras as their last astra [weapon]. Shiva wore it on his ankles. The rishis then accepted their defeat and Shiva revealed his true identity and started the divine cosmic dance Urdhva Tandava before them and the world vibrated and all the beings were immersed in deep trance emerging from the feet of Shiv. Vishnu who witnessed this dance of life explained it to Adishesha, the serpent on which Lord Vishnu reclines.

After seeking permission from Lord Vishnu Adishesha visited Lord Shiva and presented his desire to witness the divine dance. Lord Shiva asked him to visit Vyagrapuram where he promised to dance one day. Adishesha was then born on Earth as Pathanjali. He approached Vyaghrapadar and told him of his life purpose. Vyaghrapadar who was delighted to hear this as he was so devoted to Shiva and himself desired to watch the cosmic dance accompanied Pathanjali and visited the temple and started seeking the honor of witnessing the performance by praying to the Lord himself. Thus the waiting ended on a special day of the Poosam star during the Tamil month of Thai when all the celestial musicians, devas, sages, all gathered at the temple when Lord Shiva appeared beating drums and showering blessings.

Goddess Kali who was the protector of the Thillai Vanam [Forest] refused Shiva to perform his dance. Shiva challenged Kali to dance along with him and put forward a condition that the loser shall be banished from the place. Kali accepted and both the supreme powers started dancing to the rhythm of life matching each other’s every step until at a certain point Lord Shiva performed the Urdhva Tandava raising his leg over his head. Seeing the breathtaking posture of Lord Nataraja, Kali Devi [Goddess] accepted defeat and moved to the Northern end of the temple and stayed there. A shrine dedicated to Kali Devi is present at the same Northern end of the Thillai Nataraja Temple. Vyaghrapadar and Patanjali requested Shiva to stay at Chidambaram as the Lord Nataraja so that all the earthly beings could have the opportunity to witness the cosmic dance of life that is the basis of the whole world and seek blessing from the Supreme God of Gods.

Now as we move to the architecture of this huge temple, it is a medley of architectural contributions by the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara and the Chera Rulers. The Thillai Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram is the oldest example of Cholan architectural style. It houses many great features that are found in other temples which had been built after this temple. For example: the Thousand Pillared Hall and the Shiva Ganga water tank which are the prime temple features of its kind. The temple has 9 gateways symbolizing the 9 orifices in human body. Of these 9 gateways 4 are has Gopurams or temple towers each facing the 4 cardinal directions North, East, South and West. There is a Lord Govindaraja Perumal Temple close to the Nataraja Shrine, which is named as one of the 108 Divya Desams. Also, there is the Thillai Kali Temple close to the Nataraja shrine.

In the gold roofed sanctum sanctorum of the temple, the lord is worshipped in three forms:

• Nataraja, the form
• Crystal Linga, the semi form
• Empty space, the formless

Major Festivals

There are six Maha Abhishekam celebrated throughout the year, which is dedicated to Lord Nataraja. It starts with Marghazhi Thiruvathirai in December – January, then chaturdashi of the month of Masi (February – March), followed by Chithirai Thiruvonam in April- May, the Uthiram of Aani (June – July)also known as Aani Thirumanjanam, the chaturdashi of Aavani in August – September and the final 6th ceremony, the chaturdashi of the month of Puratasi (October – November). Another famous event is Natyanjali which is celebrated during February month when many Bharata Natyam Performers all over the state visit the temple and perform Bharata Natyam as an offering to the Lord of Natyam [Dance] himself, Lord Nataraja.

The Most Prominent Temples In Chidambaram

The town of Chidambaram houses numerous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva who is worshipped in different forms. Each of these temples is an architectural marvel that holds great historical and religious significance for the devotees. Some of the must-visit temples in Chidambaram are-

 1. Thillai Nataraja temple

Located at a distance of less than 1 km from Chidambaram railway station, this ancient Shiva temple spans across 40 acres. Lord Shiva is worshipped here in the form of Nataraja – The Lord of the Dance or the cosmic dancer. The Thillai Nataraja temple was built in the 10th century and is one of the oldest active temples in south India . The wall carvings and artifacts inside the temple display the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni, the postures that make up the foundation of the Indian classical dance form, Bharatnatyam. The temple celebrates art, dance, and culture in the most beautiful ways. The annual Natyanjali dance festival is organized every year in this temple on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.

 2. Thillai Kali Amman temple

Situated north of the Thillai Nataraja temple, lies the Thillai Kali Amman temple. The temple has Goddess Kali as its presiding deity. The story behind the formation of this temple is that Goddess Parvati became enraged after losing a dance competition with Lord Shiva which was meant to decide who is more superior. She took the form of Kali and moved here. Lord Brahma was the one to cool down her anger by chanting Vedas and praising her. ‘Thillai Kali’ is a deity in anger and hence the idol inside the temple has four faces.

 3. Chathapuram Nathar Temple

Just like most of the temples in Chidambaram, Chathapuram Nathar Temple is also dedicated to Lord Shiva who, worshipped here as Lord Chathapurinathar. Another deity worshipped here is Osai Kodutha Nayaki. Devotees believe that the aura of this temple can work miracles. The temple located in Thirukolakka, only a kilometer away from Chidambaram.

4. Thiruvetkalam temple

A temple of great historical and religious significance, Thiruvetkalam is believed to be located in the same spot where Lord Shiva battled and defeated Arjuna by breaking his bow during the battle. But if other stories are to be believed this is the place where Arjuna received the Pashupatastra from Lord Shiva.In the Thiruvetkalam temple, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Pasupateswara. Along with the presiding deity, there are other smaller shrines dedicated to several other deities. Some of these include Sundareshwar, Siddhi Vinayakar, and Mahalakshmi. The temple is most visited during a festival held in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June). During this time, the story of Pashupatastra is re-enacted at the temple.

5. Tirunelvayil

Also known as Sivapuri Uchinathar Temple, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Uchinathar. There are several other shrines inside the temple apart from the shrine of the Uchinatham and his consort Uchinayagi. The presiding deity here is present in the iconic form of a Lingam which is believed to be self-manifested. The four annual festivals celebrated here have been crowd-pullers for years. The most prominent festival here is Vaikasi Visakam which is celebrated during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June).

6. Achalpuram Temple

At a distance of around 25 kilometers from Chidambaram, in the village of Achalpuram is located another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Achalpuram Temple. The presiding deity here is in the form of a Shiva Linga entwined by a golden snake, the hood of which covers the Linga. In this temple, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Sri Shivalokathyageshwar and as always, is accompanied by his consort Goddess Parvathi as Tiruvenneetrumai Ammai. The splendid architecture of the temple is a sight to behold.

Other Tourist Attractions In Chidambaram

 Pichavaram mangrove forest – The mangrove timberland at Pichavaram is another tourist attraction that you shouldn’t miss when in and around Chidambaram. With around 20 different types of trees and 200 species of birds, crabs, turtles, and prawns, this place is a wonder of nature. Pichavaram mangrove forest, one of the world’s largest mangrove jungles, is located about 30 minutes away from Chidambaram. Spread over an area of 1100 hectares, this beautiful and fascinating place is worth visiting.

Pichavaram backwaters – While at the mangrove forest, make sure you take a trip down the backwaters to witness nature in its full glory. The pristine atmosphere and natural surroundings along with an assortment of different species of birds are an absolute delight to watch.

How To Reach Chidambaram

The temple town of Chidambaram is well-connected to all the major cities and towns in south India. You can easily reach the town via flight, train or road.

• By Air : Chidambaram is easily accessible through airways with Puducherry airport being the nearest airport at a distance of about 66 kilometers. From here, you can easily get a cab to your destination. Another option to reach Chidambaram is through the Tiruchirapalli international airport located 195 kilometers away from the town.
• By Rail : Another feasible option to reach the town is via railways. Chidambaram lies in the middle of the Trichy- Chennai route and is connected to most of the towns and cities of India. Apart from the Chidambaram railway station, other options to reach the town include the Mayiladuthurai Railway Station situated around 48 kilometers away and Villupuram Railway Station at a distance of 80 kilometers.
• By Road: Chidambaram has great connectivity to all the major cities located nearby. If you wish to reach via roadways, the best option is to go for Tamil Nadu state transport or private buses running regularly from Chennai , Tiruchirapalli, Pondicherry, etc. The roadway is an ideal choice for those who want to visit Pondicherry on the way.

Best Time To Visit Chidambaram

Temples of religious significance rule the tourism of Chidambaram. Hence, the best time to visit this sacred place is during the various festivals celebrated here. But always plan your trip to this town after having a look at the current weather.

 Summer – The summers in Chidambaram feature scorching sun rays and humidity. The temperature here ranges from 41°C to 30°C, hence, it’s not advisable to visit the place during the summers. But during June, an unmissable festival known as the Adi Thirumanjanam is celebrated which attracts thousands of devotees from across the world.

Monsoon – The monsoon here commences at the end of June and continues till September. Rains beautify this town and add to its charm. You can visit the place during this period and immerse yourself in spirituality. However, during the monsoon, no major festival is celebrated here.

Winters – Winter season lasts from December till February. The temperature gets down to a minimum of 21°C resulting in pleasant surroundings. Several festivals take place during this period. Some of them are The Dance Festival of Natyanjali and Markazhi Thiruvadhirai amongst others.

At a distance of 2 km from Chidambaram Bus Station, Nataraja Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Chidambaram town in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the ancient temples in South India , and among the must include places in Chidambaram tour packages . Also referred to as the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple or Thillai Nataraja Temple, the Nataraja Temple is dedicated to Nataraja - Shiva as the lord of the dance. It is one of the five Panchbootha Sthalas of Lord Shiva, and it denotes the Skies. The temple has mythical roots and a Shiva shrine existed at the site when the town was known as Thillai. Chidambaram, the name of the city and the temple literally means 'atmosphere of wisdom' or 'clothed in thought', the temple architecture symbolizes the connection between the arts and spirituality, creative activity, and the divine. The temple was constructed during the 10th Century when Chidambaram used to be the capital of the Chola dynasty, making it one of the oldest surviving active temple complexes in South India. The Cholas considered Lord Shiva as Nataraj as their family deity. The Nataraj temple has undergone damage, renovation, and expansion throughout the 2nd millennium. Most of the temple's surviving plan, architecture, and structure are from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with later additions in a similar style. Although Shiva is the main deity of the temple, it also represents major themes from Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and others with all due reverence. Sprawling over 40 acres complex, the Lord Nataraja Temple situated in the heart of the city is one of the most beautiful examples of the genius of Chola architecture. The roof of the sanctum sanctorum is covered with gold plates. The presiding deity of the temple is represented by air, one of the five elements of the universe, and is known as Akasa Lingam. The temple is one of only five places where he is represented as an idol instead of a lingam. The temple wall carvings display all the 108 karanas from the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni, and these postures form a foundation of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance. The temple has five main Halls or Sabhas namely the Kanaka Sabha, the Cit Sabha, Nritta Sabha, Deva Sabha, and Raja Sabha. Shiva himself is presented as the Nataraja performing the Ananda Tandava ('Dance of Delight') in the golden hall of the shrine Pon Ambalam. Chidambaram is also amongst one of the most celebrated shrines of Lord Shiva in the country and among the top Chidambaram places to visit . The place also bears significant importance scientifically as this temple is located at the center point of the world 's Magnetic Equator. The Marghazhi Thiruvaadhirai, Chittirai Thiruvonam, Aani Thirumanjanam are the key festivals with the main deity being brought outside the sanctum sanctorum in a procession that included a temple car procession followed by a long anointing ceremony.
